The Football Card Podcast #70: Building a Collection That Grows With You
hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you are listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking slabs himself brett how you doing you know it's trying to there's a lot going on here at stacking slabs hq we were just talking about it family when you have multiple kids kids change in schools daycare all those things and i know like i know the audience here at stacking slabs and the football card podcast and we've got a lot of parents that listen to the show i would probably argue that most people listening to this show have a child have responsibilities have a job are very busy people and it's just you know sometimes you gotta manage those two worlds of being a professional being a parent and just figure out what is best for your household and we're having some big conversations over here we're just trying to figure stuff out you know we are all when you become a parent you're trying to figure it out for the first time so that's what's happening right now with me is like big life decisions regarding my family and then which is the most important thing in in in my life and then you know luckily i get the opportunity to have a little escape here where i can talk about football cards and i can talk about football and dude what a week as a football fan yeah i mean i don't know like i feel like i need a remark and comment a little bit i know there's a a question somewhere buried in this about it but i don't know do you think it's is now a good time to air it out or should we should we should we yeah save it get into it i mean the the leaves are the winds of change are blowing in indy there's yeah how are we feeling big change up top so i won't go back to like being a dad and this you'll appreciate this my wife got the opportunity to first of all like opening statement very bad football weekend for everyone here at stacking slabs hq my wife is a indiana alum hoosiers lost to ohio state she went down and was with friends so she had a night away i'm a notre dame football fan not a great night for notre dame football fans and then we can parlay this into the main topic but i'll set the stage so my wife's away i have the responsibility of all three of my daughters five and under for the first time ever all three just me so saturday i'm like how do we manage through this you know like gotta get them out of the house gotta do the thing like i got really brave and took them to tuttle's farm in greenfield by myself which was as we roll up into this farm apple orchard you know big slides all the fall activities realizing you know it's like forty five degrees outside in indy or in greenfield i should say and like stereotypical fall day of course this place is gonna be packed you would have thought you know you would have thought like the the beatles were like we had you know john come back george come back from the dead and the beatles were playing like that's how many cars there were and i was like oh shit pike this is gonna be something so it actually turned out well it was great we i managed through all of it we had a fun time and then like got the kids down and then had to watch the debacle in the notre dame game and all the controversy and all that so that sucked and my wife was getting back in the morning and it was like once she got back i was literally exiting so it was like she it was like ships passing at night because i was going to the game so i just dude i didn't i know it was the titans and i know they're not very good and i know cam ward has not been very good but dude i and i i should have picked the titans in our pick them dude i should have but i couldn't bring myself to it but i i texted my buddy before the game i was just like we're gonna lose this man like we're we're this is it i just like i just had this feeling and it it was the catalyst who's like dude tyler warren's out and i was like well this is it we're definitely gonna lose this and you know you get to the game by the way fun part of the game really good we've got a loyal listener of the football card podcast a longtime friend in the hobby i got the opportunity to meet paul colts eight zero eight stable coming in from hawaii to spend some time in indianapolis he he texted me like hey dude i'm here i'm like you're here and he's like yeah and he like sent me a list of all the places he ate and dude he hit he hit them all and he hit fat dan's because we have talked about fat dan's because we have talked about fat dan's with the pod and so shout out paul but he told me where he was sitting which is you know he was a he was a hundred level i'm a hundred level so i got in early and i like ran over to his concourse and i went in and i looked and i was like there he is and i was just like paul he's like brett he like got up and did it was great like before the game we were standing there just it's so great to like meet people that you interact with for so long so that was awesome that was the best part of the day it's like meeting him and talking cards talking colts all that stuff so shout out paul hopefully safe travels home but yeah dude the the gateway what's what's paul's instagram so all the follower all the colts eight zero eight stable colts eight zero eight stable that's right incredible colt's collection and colt's collects and chef right isn't paul a chef he is a chef at the four c he's a four seasons guy damn that's awesome i should i should what i should've gotten strategic and then invited paul over for dinner so we could be on vacation and cook us all dinner yeah a dinner for you and three kids and then invite me over too yeah yeah maybe we could do a live next time next time paul so yeah dude the game like you know you're up thirteen o at halftime and it was just like it like the whole time i'm sitting there i'm like we should be up twenty eight nothing but it was classic case of just being a pathetic team that just can't get over the hump and then of course we lose and you wanna talk about apathy dude you know in a previous era i would have just gotten so upset and frustrated with a loss like that but dude i was like i was numb to it and it just you've reached this point where you've just become so numb for so long and that's how i felt walking out i just felt like this is what i'm used to and you know hopefully something happens get into work on monday look open up my text message i was recording something and had everyone firing off like the text about balor being fired and i looked at it and i just like didn't even react i was like okay and i just moved on and went on with my day and then it started to sink in and then i just started getting really mad man i just started getting like really frustrated with the situation and then obviously when any time a gm gets fired there's all the speculations there there's a speculation about peyton and all this stuff and try not to like get too high or get too low but i'll tell you this this is the punchline of where i wanted to get to in this and then if you have any questions or wanna dig in further we can but i will say that from a collecting perspective i have been going through a pretty big shift in the way i approach my collection and with that shift primarily we've talked about this is just kind kind of this move from like a team collection perspective to more player focused and more player driven and man that move couldn't come at a a better time because the the representation of this era in my collection like really just started to piss me off like even from a perspective of like having like the best of the best cards i was like this is not making me happy this pisses me off i've i've wasted so much money on like being a fan and getting nothing in return and i'm just ready for a change so it's a new day here at stacking slabs hq we're we're moving forward but i've learned a lot just about my own collecting going through something like this it's like you know we get commentary from all these fans when stuff goes happen in collectors and this and that and it's just like i i find myself to be in this like i don't wanna put myself above anyone from a fandom perspective but like there's a difference when you're a season ticket holder like when you're spending thousands of dollars every year to go to these games and then thousands of dollars on a collection to represent your team it just reaches a boiling point and so like i've reached that boiling point and it's like apathy is where i'm at right now but and like the thing that excites me the most is just like this reimagination of like what i want my collection to look like in light of it i will always be a colts fan like win lose or draw but we're in a a point right now where it's just not very fun and i hope the change everything kind of ends up working itself out but basically the the worst case scenario of what could have gone wrong has gone wrong and it feels like we just started the nfl season so i've gotta sit here and just watch a team that sucks that where everyone's gonna feel like they're getting traded and on top of it the swanton song of chris ballard is to get fired and then also make sure that we're left next year without a first round draft pick so that's that's how i'm doing right now condole my condolences that is a tough situation as a fan to be in i've gone through many of those cycles as a bears fan i have seen the see my season's over by week three i'm alright i guess this is what we're doing but normally having the the draft pick to look forward to is one saving grace so even you guys not having that is brutal the bears same thing happened with khalil mack though after the bears trade for khalil mack had a great spark on twenty eighteen with him but then didn't have first round picks i think the next two years or at least twenty nineteen but yeah i was most curious yeah how it affects your collecting if it's hard when the product on the field is letting you down to look at those same jersey colors and representations in your collection and get excited about it even if it's from a different era i just know how those two things can correlate when when the bears are good in real life or are currently good it makes all of my other bears cards a little more little extra fun to look at but when they stink it's it's even tougher so are you do you find yourself shifting into like i know you had mentioned like andrew luck is still a pillar and a foundation is it focusing there or are you just even looking beyond outside of football outside of the colts just other things like where where are you kind of as you are refocusing any any thoughts any direction it's not fully baked out but it's two number one like luck is is he is the pillar he is the foundation and i was thinking about this it's like man collecting him has been so much fun because we've talked about this a lot like especially now in this era where everything's expensive it's like in that moment when i was able to acquire my favorite cards of his it was like i felt like i was stealing them from everyone else but nobody wanted them because he was an afterthought so like not only was i getting the best cards of one of my favorite players of all time but there was value in that too like so that was fun and for that like usually with cards it's like you wanna take money off the table because you're so up on them with his like my cards of him in my collection it's like i just love him so much it's like i just want him to stay so like luck will always be there and then i think it's now like the other side it's like this is what i can tell you like it was fun to be so invested in a brand and i still like like my favorite cards in my collection are my luck finites like without question but it's it's really hard to be invested in a brand in parallel when the representation and the players are mostly they give you like bad feelings and bad thoughts based on kind of the era that you're in so like that like that was something i experienced and it was fun and i had a good time but like there's def like it's not a place where i wanna continue to be so i think it's like i have not made any decisions yet but i i i would imagine like from a collecting perspective outside of luck it's like what is the era that made you the most happy well there was an era where peyton manning was my quarterback and we won a super bowl okay yeah you know i've collected those cards i've investigated those cards but like what is that like what does that look like in this year where i've matured as a collector i've maybe haven't like checked everything out or maybe i can do things maybe a little bit differently than i did in the past so it's like i've made no decisions but like my mindset especially after this is i go back go back to the golden years a little bit and try to try to have some fun is peyton coming to the franchise is he gonna be the savior new gm that's what the rumor suggests i think at the at the minimum you got to which sounds like they are carly's gotta give him the call had peep had friends who worked for the organization in pre a previous era and was pretty dialed into like the peyton conversation in indy especially post retirement and the point of contention with jim and him was always peyton wanted ownership mhmm and it sounds like i i like i i value dan patrick as a someone in media i feel like he is it gets has good sources he's fair he's honest and for him to like remark on the fact like just bringing up like ownership it would be like sounds like would be a part of the conversation that i think that changes everything because i think that's what peyton wants and it's like if you're the ursa girls it's like like if you were gonna give ownership to anybody you know like got gotta be a guy like peyton who's the face of your franchise and is the guy like dude i can't like i've exhausted this and it's like i i don't know if he's the gm but i think he's the president the president i think they need a roster the matt ryan exactly the matt ryan role you need and that's in the glory days of the colts like bill polian was the team president because you need the buffer between the gm the individual and the ownership group so that's the role i think i think it's team president and it's giving him some ownership and you know letting him call the shots i you tell me that's gonna happen i'm i'm i'm very i'm very bullish and excited and i'm willing to wait a long time for his vision to take shape because he's earned that like he's earned that amongst the fan base so i have no idea if that's gonna take place i'm sure a call will be made but regardless whatever decisions and whatever happens right now it's gotta be better than the ten years of just absolute garbage that i've had to sit through and fake it through and act like things were normal like things were not normal and i was just being a fan and being intoxicated by being a fan but so it goes uh-huh it was an abusive relationship yes it's like why do i keep coming back to this the same junk i watch matt eberfloo he's coached my team for three years he's the worst head coach i've ever seen in my entire life but i've convinced myself this is normal this is okay like if i if maybe if i'm better they'll treat me better maybe it's my fault maybe the bears should have realized that they should not hire anyone from the colts organization but all roads led to ben johnson so i'm happy with whatever happened happens so yeah lead us to this point but no it's it's a bummer because i have i'm in indy i have a ton of colts fan friends and i hate seeing them down and dejected but at this point it feels i feel the numbness i feel people are fed up they're like okay whatever i've been there whereas like i can just check i'm i'm opting out like i'm gonna watch every game and it's nice if they win but at the same time yeah it's it's hard to invest your time and effort and money into something that just makes you sad especially when you've got a family especially when you've got a full time job it's like i there's only so much energy and that at least i've freed up some energy we'll see but yeah man it's the thing about it is is for me it's like i got i get to get up here and we get to talk about football cards and i don't need to commiserate and be all upset it's like i can't control any of this it's just like i'm a i'm a fan like this is this is what i what i do so it i was thinking about this because i knew we were gonna talk about it as we got up here and i was just like the one the one thing that i think is important to talk about is like you know we as collectors sometimes feel obligated to continue to collect a certain way and i think like this is a lesson that i have learned through this and it wasn't just like coming to a it came to a head like this week but it was it was happening and i was realizing it i think like we feel like we owe it to ourselves to stay the course on something because we've been doing it for so long and been buying and collecting a certain way and we're trying to see it out it's like ultimately if it is not making you happy because this should be making us happy then you should make a change and so like that is what i have committed myself to it's like make a change like when i evaluate and set it and look at my cards like you know what a place that really makes me happy it's like looking at my andrew luck cards it's like this makes me really happy the other stuff it's like yeah whatever like i was buying this stuff because i was trying to do something because i was a colts fan it's like that was fun in a certain tone point but it ran its course so that my message through my misery to the audience would be like if you are if you feel like a ball and a chain to something that you're doing just break free like you you gotta you gotta change it up like we shouldn't be scared to change with the environment and our own interests and passions around us yeah that's the worst when it's just unpleasant i guess when you're collecting something or you have some sort of lane or project you're working on and then when cards pop up you feel obligated to buy it because it fits even though if it's especially with set collecting or i've run into that with yeah prism gold collecting where some random bear's guy's prism gold will pop up and it's like i think i like i i'm telling you i have to buy this because this is the thing that i collect even though this player i don't care about and it's a hundred percent higher than probably its market value but at the same time this hasn't popped up in years so i'm gonna buy it and then i buy it and then it just goes in the row with fifty others of the same kinda like mediocre players from the past and sometimes it's fun though like i don't know i go back and forth where i just sold off you know like fifteen of those like bears prism golds and i'm like damn some of those were cool i'd like i i miss the cutler i don't know do you know and and then sometimes it's like no this is all fat that can get trimmed off currently because i don't know i had it the chase was done that's a whole other part of it too i feel like once you've we're not that it's we have like short attention spans but there is something about you do the hunt you get the card you have the card and then you're just the whole what do i do with it thing where it's sitting in your collection and then after a while it's more of a symbol of something you accomplished you were able to get it but now now what now i wanna accomplish something else and this previous accomplishment will help me reach the new accomplishment so it's a cycle but i wish you i wish you the best wish the team the best are we at least feeling now like do we want richardson to start what's like the colts are you just like i'm done with the colts for this year no i'll i'm i mean i will i mean i i will watch it all i have not determined i'm trying to determine like like you know going to a game is like such an investment because it's like i'm away from my family and you know there's time to get their time it's just a big thing so it's like i probably won't go to every game for the rest of the season i'll pick and choose we'll see how that shakes out in terms of the the team dude it's like i could care less like play the rookies like play the people like richardson's if richardson had another year i'd be like oh you gotta start richardson right now but he's like he's gone next year so it's like like in the last thing i want dude is that last thing i want is for him to like win some games and then like there actually be some consideration on having this resign him so it's it's a it's the ultimate mess of a situation the really sad part about this is for me is you're gonna have guys like quentin nelson deforest buckner and jonathan taylor like likely gonna get traded and those are the guys that you know have literally if anyone deserved to like be in a winning situation is those guys who've stuck around and busted their ass so like high chance of those guys being somewhere else and that's that that i think is the most disappointing part of all of it it's like these dudes who have committed everything to like continuing to be here and wanting to be here and then likely will be victims of the circumstance because like at this point like from a team perspective it's like the best thing you can do is like get free up salary cap and get draft mixed it's like this is you are rebuilding and so yeah that's the sad part for me honestly yeah bear i've seen some bears rumor mills give us buckner people want buckner bears want any defensive line help so he's good he's really good so in the the crap that we have if you end up getting him you'll be very happy because he's he's been one of the blight bright spots on a a stinky year but it's also it's very week to week league we've always talked about that just come out and please beat the vikings this sunday maybe pull off pull off that upset for me and we'll be a very happy pod do we have we yeah we we have no receivers we've got we've gotten we've got nothing they're just stacking the box on taylor you think brian flores isn't gonna stack the box on taylor and make daniel jones turn the ball over two or three times like there's there's there's the movie before you've seen it everybody brutal let's move on yeah better times are ahead it's you got you know gotta get low so you can get high that's right football card pod episode seventy the big seven o seventy wow we made it shout out us shout out the listeners of the football card pod we have an opening topic on top of the opening topic you wanna start us off based on i do i i wanna see course around our last topic and clip i love getting information from you the loyal listeners and a great way to do that is when we post a reel just looking at the commentary and the reel that we posted last week was around the twenty eleven national treasures larry fitzgerald shield patch auto one of one bgs ten sale for twenty one thousand six hundred dollars it is the fourth highest selling larry fitzgerald card of all all time and at the time of the recording i assume that the card was game worn we used the clip to promote it and when right when i posted it i instantly found out it wasn't game worn because all the commentary on it and so shout out all you game worn degenerates out there who just like it's like you just smelled it and you're like meh and then let's trash this card because who would pay that much so what i what what i i investigated afterwards and i'll pull it up here on the screen for all you patreon i found this on the sold listings on fanatics but if you let's see if i can make this bigger zoom in let's see here so you can see if you turn your head here the enclosed event worn jersey and autograph are guaranteed by panini america so the back of the card says event worn and everyone in the comments were saying player war and so mhmm this this this topic like really spun me up and i was like this would be fun to talk about so we've had all these manufacturers who have had put relic materials in cards and the descriptions over the years have varied across the board game worn game used player worn event used nonassociated the commenters who were passionately calling out this as not a game use patch and getting it wrong is like that's that's what spawned this for me so it's like my question i guess with all of this in light is why does it have to be this hard like why does it have to be this hard to understand the materials the description the words we use because i feel like if there was it was more systematic if there were more was more structure on this we all know these cards sell well i think there would be even more confidence and these cards would sell even better but the the fact that like in some cases like i don't know like did the whoever bought this card do they know do they care does it matter like what what is a vent warren pro bowl is that is that like he had this on when they took the team picture like who knows so i get like the topic that i just wanna bring is like patches the words we use like why is it gotta be so hard what are your thoughts i hear you i also understand though why it's become a thing because as collectors as soon as we dive deep into something all those little nuances start to gain value and like the way you can distinguish different cards like you know there's event war and player war and all that but then think of like first year color match jersey numbered like even like parallel stuff it is kind of the same thing in a way so you know there's a die hard base out there that wants to collect game or collect relic cards there then are have to be like these tiers that come with it and i think all of that language becomes you know the qualifier there that helps that and like i personally prefer game use or it it's not the arena i really collect in but if i were to i would to me i would want game use but then i also like understand that aesthetics can be the driver so i'm thinking alright maybe some people that matters less to them and if it's you know a game if it's just like the shield in an auto they just like how that looks and are less concerned about where the shield comes from which again not necessarily for me but i can see how how that could be something people collect but it also made me wonder all of this thinking about patches and jersey cards because when i was a kid or back in my day when jersey cards first were coming to market those were so awesome like that was like the pinnacle of cards to me at the time of like oh my god i can get a card that has a piece of the jersey that the player wore that is insane i remember pulling a richard seymour jersey card from like two thousand one sp game use and like years later i knew i still had the card and richard seymour is going into the hall of fame and i was like i have a richard seymour jersey card i am good and then i go and look it up and it's four dollars but the there was this like you know mystique around jersey cards because it had a piece of the game new jersey so i'm wondering how are jersey cards pulling today with the youth like does a ten year old kid who opens a pack of whatever and get one of those cards where it's like not from anything it's just a piece of fabric do do they like that like it does that feel like a a hit to them and something they collect or is it to them are they also like this is garbage not game use so yeah i'm curious what the youth thinks about jersey cards and do jersey cards still have aura like they did when i was a kid or are they fully not there because if a ton of people are just collecting them because they think it adds to the card like and they're totally fine with it not being game used but instead of it just being a plain card it has this three colored piece of fabric in there if that to them adds value like have at it but to me it it my personal bias was founded in like the mystique of a jersey card and that a player wore that and and that's all i really would want in collecting that space is like the more knowledge the better so any knowledge of the item that makes it unique is interesting to me so this larry fitzgerald one if it on the back said you know larry wore this in the pro bowl punt pass and kick contest i'd be like oh hell yeah that's awesome just saying event worn is a little i just picture them in a room putting on a jersey taking off a jersey putting on a jersey take you know doing that twenty five times to make a ton of these cards so the the more specific the better i think we talked about this mhmm last week week yeah we're just like again that that's the information that i seek so yeah i don't know i under i understand why it exists as you know a a way to break out and tear kind of that type of collecting and one other note i also like that i like that we're making an edit and a correction to our previous episode maybe we need to do this every week just a quick you know stuff like that mistakes bro backtracking last episode of like the correction section in the new york times because it's an open forum here on the football card pod call us out and we'll keep conversations going yes i will also say which this is probably not the audience because if you're listening to this you're listening to the pod but there are so many times and i restrain myself when we're like sharing clips to promote the episode on instagram like somebody will go down like take a little piece of information from what we said and go down this deep rabbit hole of how wrong we are about something i'm just like listen to the whole episode like this is a clip like we're in a clip society here so but yeah man i when i will be vulnerable here when i posted it and got all the comments everyone's talking about it not being game worn when i said i just assumed it was game worn and maybe i i should have done the homework but then that like other shoe dropped when i looked at it and it said like they everyone was saying player worn and it said event worn and i was like what well i was like okay no one knows like just look at the back of the card so i thought like it might make for a interesting topic but i'll say this for my own collecting you've said this like this is not your lane it is not my lane either i am becoming more interested in this side but it's a very clear cut for me on these items where where it is it's very much how i disqualify anything with a sticker autograph if if i'm getting an autograph there can be a sticker autograph so if it has a sticker i'm not interested in the card on with this stuff it it's like it is the snobby it has to be game worn it's like there's a massive difference there to me between all of those and like when i i i will never quite understand how passionate the game worn collectors are because i'll never reach that level but i i can i i understand the mindset that that you have and how particular you are and like the demands you have of the manufacturer to source materials that have a little grass stain on them i i i get that and and i i appreciate that i think it's we should have an appreciation for the best of the best and in order to be the best of the best in this category of cards you need to be worn on the field because that brings a whole lot more to the table than any of the other descriptions would i'm curious for the relic community is there in the in the hierarchy game used versus game worn are those equal is game used better than worn like worn to me indicates maybe they didn't even play in that game maybe they just you know had it on there sitting on the bench game used feels like they saw they saw the field they saw action so curious give us answers if there's a difference there and then i think you're discrediting yourself when you're like i don't understand like to me what we did where we called this we identified this wrong is probably like if we're watching a clip and someone's calling a black finite a black pulsar we're like what are you doing like it's obvious that's that's not the a fire guy that's the pulsar so you know if we're we people who collect relics probably listen to us talking about shiny cards like i don't get it i'll like what are we doing chasing golds and black silly black patterns like just give me a jersey card that my player wore and an autograph so there's there's something for everybody out there in this little hobby of ours there is so yeah man that's like that's a pretty good way to kick off the app we're we're holding ourself accountable by going back and having conversations based on your comments so you all have a voice out there make it known yes yes shout out us for being holding ourselves accountable alright real quick before we jump into episode seventy couple housekeeping things first the pick'em leaderboard let's take a look at the full season standings in first place still knicks basketball pc a basketball collector sits atop alone at the top of the football card podcast pick'em tv with the vcr gets wheeled in and is like oh we're watching bill nye we get to watch you know october sky this is gonna be awesome and it's he puts on the football card pod they're just like dhs version yeah what is this i have to watch these two guys talk about football cards we're in social studies what are we doing here so shout out everyone listening to football card pod in the wild that's the highlight of my week i just imagine like a student coming up to krs cards and being like what are you watching and he's like this is a football card podcast and i'm like what and i'm like he's like do you know i have the best champ bailey collection in the world you wanna see it just hoping students ask about it just like having a champ bailey finite like sliding out a little bit from under a stack of graded essays oh what's this you say well i'm glad you asked but my favorite bit of all time is the the the the the mindset that we have of like you're always preparing yourself for that moment that somebody walks into your house then that you can then go run through your collection with it's like we are all preparing ourself for this imaginary moment that never that never happens so it'd be like oh are those are those cards like is that a case of cards yes actually would you like for me to show them to you one day one day it'll all happen that's when maybe we have to start it like a a card show that's not like for for selling i mean i guess selling would happen naturally but it's more of here's your platform to just share your cards yes talk about them yeah we'll get there yeah usually those shows it's like they're going and they're buying and picking up the they're making a deal it's like there's there's no deal in this it's just just the guy you know or the gal just opening up their case talking about their cards it's like that's all it is and then i wanna hear the logic behind the placement of each card why does this one go into this one just give me the lowdown on the ordering alright episode seventy here we go big ugly autumn marches on and i'm i'm excited about the one i dug up today but do you want do you wanna kick it off i think yeah i like what you've got here yeah so i have we have a very indianapolis themed episode today and i will say i love my city i love indianapolis by the way i got sent this but i didn't see the clip jim nantz was interviewed i think it was mcafee he said he almost moved here he loves it so much i was like that's credibility right there if you're looking for somebody and then i was like why didn't you move here like what what held you back but i was like shout out jim nantz for loving indianapolis but i'm i'm picking a indianapolis born and bred human being which he it's it's an interesting case because he played for the rival of my high school at bishop chatard but then he went on to play for notre dame so it he made it alright and that is zach martin cowboys from twenty fourteen to twenty twenty four first round selection sixteenth pick overall and for all you cowboys fans you probably remember this but that pick saved you from drafting johnny manziel which ended up being a good pick for you seven time first team all pro two time second team all pro a hundred and sixty two games played a hundred and sixty two games started favorite thing about zack martin is the seven to seven stat which is the immaculate discipline as they call it he was called for as many holding penalties as he had first team all pro selections with exactly seven that's insane seven he's gonna be a hall of famer one of the best alignment of this era also you had to throw a notre dame nugget out there he was the mvp of the twenty thirteen pinstripe bowl notre dame against rutgers so how about a lineman winning the mvp award and so zach martin decided to figure out what have you had any cool cards sal how about this baby his rookie finite out of prism sold in september of twenty twenty four for one thousand seven hundred and seventy five dollars which great buy whoever landed that card one of the greatest linemen of this era like i mentioned he's gonna be in the hall of fame but just a hell of a football player what an awesome card and that even being i mean i guess that's his real jersey but just doesn't have pads on whatever if you wanna call that practice jersey or not doesn't bother me on this specific card i just like it it fits the situation like he's at at the field jersey on helmet off versus when it's like the practice jersey red shorts like that just doesn't feel right but this great looking card despite the the uniform situation what a legend seven holding calls seven first team all pros there's nothing better than just those stonewall alignment that hey we draft you and you are just gonna be you're gonna play a hundred and sixty two games out of a hundred and sixty two like what a what a luxury to have there and i he was during that so yeah drafted in fourteen that like when ezekiel elliott was a rookie in twenty sixteen like i feel like that was like prime lot like the cowboys line during that stretch was just so dominant yeah ezekiel elliott probably owes zach martin some steak dinners that's for sure but as i'm looking at this and i don't know because he's alignment if this was variation to five like four different variations as twenty fourteen does i would need to look that up i would bet that the answer is no but he was a high draft pick but i'll investigate that afterwards but i'm looking at this photo of him without his helmet on and i know in later years with the variations of the rookies they did like the studio shot which i'm not the huge biggest fan of but like i'm thinking about prism football cards it's like dude i can't remember any cards of guys without their helmets off the top of my head can you not really no this is what makes this unique to me it's like he doesn't have his helmet on yeah this is awesome alright seventy i gotta talk about art donovan if you know anything about art donovan i feel like i knew the name but i didn't quite know and now he's one of these guys that needs a movie about him in my head so art donovan born in nineteen twenty four died in twenty thirteen was an american professional football player who was a defensive tackle for three nfl teams primarily the baltimore colts he played college football for the boston college eagles hall of famer in nineteen sixty eight so he's born in the twenties the son of a boxing referee and grandson of professor mike donovan who was a world middleweight boxing champion in the eighteen seventies so like bare knuckle boxing world champion which just growing up in the nineteen twenties with boxing bare knuckle boxing in your blood just a different different childhood than a lot of us have probably had and he receives a scholarship then when he's heading to college to notre dame in nineteen forty two but something else was going on in nineteen forty two a little thing called world war two and he gets drafted he heads out to the pacific is in some of the like biggest battles in world war two he was at the battle of luzon and then the battle of iwo jima he's literally at iwo jima which is one of the craziest battles in world war two and he was like an ammo loader for a machine gun on an aircraft carrier like he's just doing all these things serving in combat then you know as one does after probably seeing and experiencing the most horrific and traumatic things of all time just heads off to college to play college football at boston college and after that there was weird stuff going on in the nfl and the afl like pro football at that time so he's kinda like bouncing around but eventually lands on the baltimore colts and in the fifties and immediately becomes a perennial first team all pro and pro bowler he played in what is regarded as the greatest game of all time the nineteen fifty eight nfl championship game between the baltimore colts and the new york giants which the colts won with johnny unitas leading the team on a adr scoring drive to win the game donovan made an important tackle in overtime to kind of kick off that drive another thing that i didn't realize i mean i've heard of this game as you know being regarded as such a legendary game it had forty million viewers because it was broadcast nationally and at the time you know there's there's three channels to watch and so forty million people watching that game that's nearly super bowl i mean the super bowl now is probably i think over a hundred million but at the for the time insane ratings poll so shout out baltimore colts winning back to back nfl championships fifty eight fifty nine so you know maybe you know i i know it's baltimore but the brand of the colts exist so maybe you start being a little vintage football guy and maybe dabble in some early fifty or late fifties championship cards of your boy r donovan but he goes on has his hall of fame career and then afterwards i didn't realize was such a like people think he's hilarious and he was a regular he appeared ten times on late night with david letterman he made several appearances on the tonight show starring johnny carson he made a he guest starred in an episode of pete and pete on nickelodeon if you remember the show pete and pete do i remember pete old and yeah it was just kinda like in and out of yeah and oh he also appeared as a guest commentator at the wwf king of the ring tournament in ninety four alongside randy savage and gorilla monsoon so he just kind of was all over the place in hollywood in the eighties and into the early nineties so just shout out art donovan just kind of going from being raised by bare knuckle boxers to hollywood with a pro football hall of fame career in between is kind of an awesome awesome career wow that's incredible what's the saddest part about all of this is that when you said nineteen ninety four king of the ring the first thing that came to my mind was they were selling during the commercials or during the like promo of that they were selling blow up it was like inflatable king of the ring like blue chair with the king of the ring logo on it and i don't know why when you said ninety four king of the ring now i'm gonna have to go look at ebay and see if i can get one of those for the office just plop it down and i'll just dream about our donovan juan while i'm sitting in it get one gotta get you one some other hall of famers were sam huff ernie stoutner rayfield wright so shout out seventy big ugly autumn marches on let's get into some topics yes let okay so i'm sorry i'm just so distracted this see it oh this is it dude i have to just throw this up sorry this is not related but dude they got this baby for seven hundred bucks buy it now that's what it's gonna cost me this is ninety seven sorry i got my years mixed up ninety seven that is awesome though imagine having that in your house oh goodness i bet you could talk them down no make an offer that's that's pretty pretty extreme okay first up from cars and cardio if you could write a letter to yourself when you got back into the hobby what would it say love this question i actually did write myself a letter so thanks cards and cardio and i wouldn't do this for everyone but one of my favorite people and accounts always have great interactions and here's my letter it's welcome brett welcome back brett i know you love collecting things you've always been a collector hell you've even collected sports cards previously i just want you to know that the new environment is more advanced than ever they have something for people who want to collect make money invest or even create a business in the space there's a lot of money going in there is a lot of money going out it's easy to get distracted have fun always make sure you're focused on buying items that you love also collect items that are unique it won't be easy to find those items it will be a process that you remember and fall in love with wow i like that that is a letter that's a true letter right there okay i have a lot of similar i feel like sentiments so i tried to i was like alright i'm just gonna give three three lessons or three bars and i guess number one was find the rarest cards of your favorite players which i think helps stick to the point of like collect you know what you love and like what you're hitting on but but also finding items that are unique like not just collect your favorite players but find the rarest cards because early on when i was even collecting priest holmes i was just picking up cool cards and his two thousand six finest super fracture was just sitting on ebay but i was like oh that's too much money it was a thousand dollars obo and just was sitting there forever but i was thought it was too much money and i wish i would've maybe had done the research or realized what that was of like oh this is a really rare card of this player i should make more of an effort to get it versus it being something that i just kinda neglected so find the rarest cards of your favorite players and number two would be don't try to be a day trader because i came into the hobby i feel like at a time where i don't know it was like that post covid era where i was big into just day trading and you know doing all that trying to chase like the gamestops of the world the amc like that whole era and i remember being making purchases with that in mind of oh i'm going to buy x player this is gonna happen and i'm gonna sell the card and make a bunch of money which doing that from the comfort of your own home and trying to do it all online just is not gonna work i think that is a strategy that people could be successful at if you are at shows weekly and you are able to move inventory in that way versus doing everything online like and just like i don't know i just took so many haircuts trying to do that that did not work out i mean i'm thinking about sadiq bey cards that i bought and matthew stafford i bought him when he first went to the rams and then they won the super bowl and i lost money on that because everyone started selling their matthew stafford cards and yeah just anything i was making where i was trying to trade it like a like a stock or like an asset was did not work for me so don't try to be a day trader and there's always money in the goats saying that like there's always money in the banana stand where mhmm i think a lot of times i like wanted to feel like i was zagging away from that where even i could find a set from the early two thousands and i'd be like oh well everyone's gonna try and get the lydinien tomlinson or the calvin johnson i'm gonna get the like other players or and i don't know for whatever reason i didn't always want to like michael jordan was too obvious even lebron like i always kinda collected lebron but i never like fully dove in and peyton like that's someone that i'm like i wish i woulda just maybe put a little instead of doing like the day trading part of it and like trying to game the current active player market whatever i wish i would have spent a little more effort on the stuff that like has a broader appeal kinda like the the hollywood adage of like you gotta do one for you and one for them like you do the do the big blockbuster and then you can go do the indie film like you can buy your priest homes but then also buy yes buy a peyton manning card or buy a brady card one hundred percent because having the balance love that even what we're talking about with like i love letting passion lead my collecting i do that a lot but if i'm only doing that i find myself in a corner where all i've bought are cars i really really am passionate about probably overpaid for over their market value and now when something else pops up i'm limited on resources to go and get that thing like i either have to sell these things that i've become very passionate about probably even lose a little money on them but if i had been had a more balanced approach and i had this like well of like oh i can sell you know this go card or this brady card just like i like when i have some arsenal in my collection that i'm okay selling like things that i'm buying because and again i i to me i guess it's a little different than the like speculative day trading stuff i'm talking about i just think there's a way to i don't know just be adding things to your pc that can become ammunition for you to add like those grail personal pieces when they pop up but not only getting stuck collecting those personal pieces that you never wanna sell because everyone's resources are limited and it's nice when you can kinda have some flexibility within your own collection to make some moves so everything is good everything is good in moderation there are many different ways to to to do this hobby and that has been an epiphany for me is this concept of not only just buying cards that you love that you're gonna appreciate knowing that you're probably buying those cards and if they never go up in value you're you're okay with that and actually if you have to sell them you're gonna you lose money you're okay with that but like when you've got like a job and you've got kids and you've gotta pay bills like that and you wanna collect cards too like that back like it's really hard for that to be like your only approach because inevitably there are other cards that are gonna pop up in your instead of taking money out of your banking out it's a lot easier to just sell cards so like having an eye on like the knowledge expertise in your own interest and buying cards that like you feel like there's value there whether it's the player the era the parallel the sport whatever like that like that's a fun zone to be into buying cards that like you wanna you know might not stick around forever but you're cool with taking ownership of for a long period of time and if things work out then you know you might have doubled up on your money like it's good to have a balance across your your collecting i really enjoy that approach as well and it wasn't something for me that i've been doing this whole time but as i've evolved as a collector it's like you know you gotta have a mindset where you're not just spending money on cards that you're gonna keep in your case forever and that money could be better used elsewhere so i i love that call out yeah it's a it's a delicate balance i feel like we kinda talked about this i think offline but like when i was buying the pre solms super fracture where like there's just part of you that sometimes it's like like that is a card i have no i don't really wanna sell for a long long time and i'm putting money in like if you ask me where's the best place to put this much money in sports cards right now i would not say a preschools card like just logistically it doesn't make sense if i'm thinking about things strictly from that standpoint like i think there's so much opportunity in sports cards and collectibles that that isn't necessarily where i would put that money i'd not to say i think it's a bad buy or a bad investment or anything like i believe in the set i believe in the parallel all those things but it it's just when those things pop up where you need to where the big passionate purchase does pop up it's nice to not have to sell other passionate things it's nice to have some other stuff but but then yeah it's always the internal struggle of well this other stuff that i'm selling right now i think has a better chance in a year to be worth more than this priest homes but mhmm here here i am this is this is what i'm doing it for so the struggle of a of a collector the plight of a collector mhmm okay next up from ra god zero two would you rather have a great player from a lower tier set or an average player from a great set great player from a lower tier set the more and more that i collect the more i'm reminded that the subject matters a whole lot if we're focused on value like if the underlying element of this question is value then i think like i don't know the subject matters like i've sold enough sports cards to realize that the player on the card probably matters more than anything else so i think that's what i'd go with like you know i'd rather have a i'm just trying to think of a hypothetical like i'd rather have some like probably lower tier manning rare manning one of one than i would like some colts player of this era's black finite like that's probably where i'm at right now yeah i would my mind kinda went the same direction i said great player there are sets that sometimes lead collections for me but then when it comes to consolidation it's like the lower players from those sets are always like vulnerable the like the when it comes to it like the top players always stay the player drives it and the hypothetical i thought of was okay like something like twenty twelve prism would you rather have twenty twelve prism silver tom brady or like a twenty twelve prism finite benjamin watson like if you want the you know like you want the rarest card the best card of this i'm gonna i'm gonna sell the watson probably like within two seconds of owning it yeah and the brady so brady silver is actually probably worth more than a benjamin austin one hundred percent it's it's worth more maybe not even the best comp but something like that where yeah i'd rather have the player then because the set the sets matter for sure but yeah player player at the top this and you have to be dedicated and committed to the set and you have to be willing to spend more money than anyone else and know that like i've run the course of doing this for so long and it's like mike it's like a car it's like you keep going and you make stops and you you keep going and then you eventually like if there's no gas station like if you got nothing left in your tank you just stop and you're like what am i what am i i'm i'm i've got no more enter i've got nothing left to do to go on this and so it is shout out all you project builder set collectors that that's all you do like you're a different breed and i appreciate it it's it's it's a lot of work and costs a lot of money to do that well that's what i ran into with like two thousand two finest where originally i'm like i wanna get an x factor of every player or goal of every player okay that dude you get an x factor even though like there's twenty but like that just seems like insane at this point yeah there and at the at the time i was buying x factors for twenty bucks a pop like of random normal dudes and it just got to the point where i'm like i can't i will then be sinking all my resources into this mhmm like yep i'll be waiting for yep a chris chambers card to pop up and then i have to like go above and beyond to buy it and i'm like do i even really want mhmm having this much money on chris chambers right now like you you can't collect other stuff you can't afford to that and the same with team collecting we talked about that like you have to be willing to spend over market value on players that you don't like or don't care about which can become hard but then i understand the like that's where i pivoted to the refractors because i'm like okay these are affordable i don't hate myself for buying spending this much money on charlie garner or whoever so i but i understand it because like the i do love the hunt for completion like i love my spreadsheet there where i'm checking the boxes and it's like i'm a couple away so i i get it but it's it's harder when when values have gone up and if you're going after like a high end parallel or something like that where i don't know just we've yeah when you have all those all of that capital locked up into something that then i i'm not as passionate about it's easier to let that go during a consolidation alright next up from bolt card crew in seventy years what is the nineteen fifty two top set for football i i like thought really long and hard about this and i have an answer but it's probably not great but i i think like nineteen fifty two tops it's like place within the tops catalog the the story of being dropped in the hudson river the mantle it's got a specific lineage to it and i think anything that would have existed previously in that similar adjacent era football would have already been exposed so i like was getting my head thinking about like the older stuff and i just don't think like anything's there i i i do think that fifty two topps baseball is like it's really hard to compare the only thing which is probably the most obvious answer is the twenty twelve prism of it all because it was so overlooked for so long much like you know the stuff getting dropped in the hudson river that's kind of what came to my mind but it was i thought this was a really like i struggled answering this question what what did you think yeah i don't think i had came up with an answer for his question i i came up with another question that was because i'm not i wasn't at first i was thinking oh yeah we're exactly seventy years away from nineteen fifty two that's why he's asking this but we're not it's we're more than seventy years so i'm like okay it doesn't have to be a recent set this led me to just thinking like what is the most important set of the past thirty years so since nineteen ninety six to today because i like ninety six forward because you get those late ninety sets that i think i ended up i think my top candidate would be ninety seven metal because of i just feel like that design is so recognizable like even getting back into the hobby when i saw metal cards like the design i i remember that from my childhood it just stood out like it was just instantly i recognized that set even as a brand new reentered participant into the hobby which i feel like fifty two tops has that like set recognition like you can instantly kinda recognize it and then just what the what they did with pmgs and parallels and serial numbered cards and a serial numbered card to ten like a specific i'm thinking basketball football to fifteen but the greens the fact that there could be a card that that is that limited of a chase card is something that i'm still chasing today cards out of ten i love a prism gold or gold extractor just anything out of ten is still appealing to me so i do feel like that set kicked off a lot and then i'd say twenty twelve prism is also up there and on on a basketball front exquisite i think exquisite is a pretty important set but this is a football card pod so that's what i i wanted to play a little devil's advocate on your ninety seven metal universe which is certainly influential but if i were comparing and contrasting the two i'm not sure nineteen ninety seven metal universe football is anything without nineteen ninety metal universe basketball and jordan so like because of the context of football i i i i i think i i would i personally in answering your version of this questions i think i will always i would side with twenty twelve prism because when i think when i think of metal universe ninety seven i think of basketball first when i think of twenty twelve prism i think of football first because you've got the one of one parallels in football basketball does not have that and also basketball is like the weird you had like the double rookie of it all which is kinda weird so i don't know that's why like for me and i know like i'm biased because i collect and love this stuff but like i yeah i was i struggle like putting any like in this sort of question putting anything up but it just it was a take the set aside like it was such a pivotal moment like that product and it didn't like the reaction response wasn't immediate but like it was responsible for helping usher in where we're at right now and i think like the influence that the prism brand has had on all of us whether you collect this stuff or not it has changed the environment and i hope and i think it will like years from now when your people are talking about this stuff i think i hope those are like the types of stories that are brought up because i think like that's like when i think of my affinity to prism it it is because when i got back into cards like the first brand that i was introduced to was prism and it was like what is this and so like the investigation and looking and seeing its popularity i think is remarkable and obviously there's a first year of it also i had to i had to put my like prism pom poms on for a minute and just share some perspective that no i i do think twenty twelve from football twenty twelve prism it's hard to argue just because it also sets off then a lineage of a product that lasts a long time like metal didn't have that much of a run after afterwards the one on ones like you mentioned and the checklist in twenty twelve prism football when we talk about the heyday of qbs when you when the dust settles you're looking at the top ten quarterbacks of all time statistically i bet they're all twenty twelve prison like brady manning rodgers brees blissberger eli brees philip rivers is in there rivers like just everyone was i don't know if was favre in there on the vikings even but no i bet he retired by i think he retired twenty eleven yeah just like that crop of quarterbacks all being and running you got adrian peterson you got you know this this checklist is pretty killer so in in in the rook the rookie class like obviously you have luck r g three russ wilson you know they might not all pan out to be hall of fame luke kuechly like you they might not pan out to all be hall of famers but like there there is something about that rookie class that is very very memorable to a lot of collectors whenever i show my luck cards to like collectors people are always like man in twenty twelve in the hobby like people were chasing this and like it's like people remember that and i think it's because it's it was it ushered in a new era it's like new cards like what are these cards so and you could collect the top stuff with it so i i think it was just a really great year to usher in kind of a new era of football cards and collecting yeah that that would be another piece of advice in the letter to your previous self i would something that's like collect prism get over it or something like that yeah i feel like when i got in i was like panini what is panini give me upper deck give me flare give me tops like give me the brands that i know and i was just very anti panini prism but it just wasn't it took me a long time to come around and then by the time i came around i was like oh i i could've picked up some awesome cards probably over the past year and a half if i had just jumped right into this but i you didn't know no one you get that's another thing it's just like only a lot of these like decision whatever it comes from experience like you have to yep you have to buy the box the retail box i remember buying like mega boxes on ebay for like a hundred and fifty dollars oh yeah rip them and get nothing we're hoping to get orange ice parallels or something yeah hoping to get red ice red ice anthony edwards that then we're selling for like a lot of money people are buying like these base cards for twenty bucks but i was like why would i sell this it's like i'm gonna create it and get a psa ten it's worth twelve cents now final final note on this for me is just like it is remarkable to me that this license change in transition and this is the best thing i think for the prism brand from a mainstream perspective it is an afterthought there's no conversations no dialogue and i think that is the best thing for collecting this stuff long term people don't like collectors don't i was having a conversation with someone about this this week like collectors don't like to be told what to do they don't like to be pushed towards certain things like and i think like the dust settling and things marinating in like a topps chrome brand new super fracture being four times the cost of a black finite like those are really good things i think for the longevity of just the prism brand so no one can predict the future but i'm excited to see like i don't know my mindset is like this this will net like there will never be any more like licensed prizm football ever again like that's that's how i think about it and having that twenty twelve to twenty twenty five like run like the other thing is i've gotten a sicko and i collecting this stuff over the years and buying and selling like i do think there's a big difference between the later stuff outside of like players individually like the later stuff versus the the earlier stuff like to me like the the earlier the better like when i'm looking and i'm making evaluations on what i wanna keep and what i wanna sell like i find myself like gravitating towards like some of the the earlier stuff which is yeah we could probably spend the next like hour talking about prism and we're not gonna do that but yeah i've i've a lot of thoughts i just find it interesting how a product that was so front and center is now not even thought about yeah it's crazy yeah that's a whole piece of content i mean i'm sure you're going through it and i recently did this with like my top collection where i'm like what are my top eight cards mhmm that i would consider my top eight and just i'm almost doing like a march madness bracket where it's like would i rather have this or this this or this this or the and like through that unpacking what what makes it to the top is a fun exercise so i'd mhmm i'd i would pay money to watch you do that with prism your own like inter battle be between everything because yeah i bet the old stuff been a lot of bad i should have put turn on the camera because there's been a lot of dude and it's like i'm going into year three of working full time on stacking slabs wow you gotta make decisions like you you gotta decide like do i want these eight one of ones or do i want to invest in a new way of thinking about the content or a resource or so and it just it changes the game for me and it it's like yeah it's i should've it should be a reality show to be honest with you and i'm not the only one everyone goes through this sorts of sort of thing but yeah it's it's been interesting but it you grow like stuff changes so quickly like we're gonna have this conversation this time next year and our collections are gonna look different we'll have picked up and we'll have sold cards and it's that movement in the motion and the cards that stay though like there will always be the cards that stay and like i always like they give you that feeling in your stomach and like i'm i'm constantly chasing those cards that are just gonna stay for the long run yep okay couple more from drake's pc true or not many modern inserts seemingly were inspired by earlier releases two examples that come to mind are the two thousand tops gallery of heroes that may have later inspired the panini stained glass insert as well as the two thousand nine upper deck first edition bombs away card that may have inspired the kaboom cards what are some other examples where in your opinion a later release was inspired or designed after a prior release for those do you prefer the og or the copycat i don't know if this was inspired by but the closest thing that i came to which i will answer i will prefer the og the two thousand skybox skylines insert set they remind me of downtown every time i see them and there's a peyton that i own the ruby's version for a while but it shows like the city skyline of indianapolis which i think is really cool and then i would imagine like maybe i don't know it's hard for me to say like oh they gained inspiration from two thousand skybox skylines to create downtown but it's a similar vibe and it's a similar feel yeah and for me the it doesn't bother me to see copycats like if it's well done i will like it and it's i compared it here to to music sampling you know like you have to take bits and pieces from past influences and if someone can take a past song and chop it up and make it a sick beat i'm i will not be mad at that i will love listening to that song it's it's happened a billion times and it got me thinking about then dunkin' go nuts because i was trying to think like i'm sure there have been some other food related insert sets i i know there was there's like a serial one i can see in my mind for i think in basketball but i was thinking about dunkin' donuts and how oh that's fun to theme and insert around a non sport ip almost like a collab like what if they came back and dunkin' donuts or dunkin' donuts like did an official like insert collab and it was in the new tops chrome and then i realized like oh this is the exact thinking that made those minion cards yes exist where they how can we how can we partner with another ip that is trying to promote something and all of a sudden you've got six figure minion super factors did i wanna read the creative brief on that like so bad i i like get me in the meeting i won't say anything i just wanna hear the the minions people talking to the tops people and like who's pitching who like that's like like let me let me inside that that could be a tv show i would watch it's the it's like the madman meme of jon hamm at the whiteboard or something minions players but instead of being the player they're a minion and people are gonna buy them for hundreds of thousands of dollars next up from chargers pc sports cards shout out our chargers listeners they're going through it and this question touches on that so chargers pc wants to know i'm kind of i'm kind of running into an internal family fandom issue and i need some support we are near mutiny in our household and the season isn't halfway through yet can't get my kids to wear chargers gear this season and they are requesting to jump ship to another team a few questions they have started to ask me this season when's the last time the chargers have won the super bowl when will they win a game this year why do you like a team that never wins and always loses can we root for another team if your kids grow up to be fans of another team which teams would be okay and which teams would be off limits question of the week man this this this this resonated in a deep way can definitely feel your pain the first thing i thought of when i read this question is i'm glad my daughters aren't old enough to understand the pain and suffering that i felt as a colts fan post andrew luck retirement for as devastated as i've been as a colts fan i would be even more devastated seeing my girls rock or even consider rocking another team's gear they know how much i love slash hate my team i think it would be like spitting in my face like coming in my house with another team's jersey on i want them to be able to think for themselves and make their own decisions but there's a line though and supporting another team for me would be crossing it so that i don't have a an alternative like this team would be good or this team wouldn't be i would just be so insulted as a dad i would consider myself failed i'm like i'm i failed like nothing i have no influence on this house like i have failed so i i i wish you the best man that that's a tough one that is very tough especially like yeah if they want to be fans you know they're eager to be to have some fandom and the product is that mhmm bad that that is hard mhmm i'd like to think that will never happen that the bears are headed into a glory stretch that my daughters will remember forever but at the same time i was thinking about it and like you know how teenagers are i feel like one day she may choose to rebel against the sacred household of bears fans and be like no i've you've been pushing this on me my whole life and she goes on a date with a packers fan just to spite me like i it's like politics yeah political socialization i've had enough dad yeah being a being a troll's in her blood so like she will definitely pull something like that one day but it's also got me thinking about something that i've been mulling on with just fandom where like what if in your lifetime or like in your fan lifetime you get like a your team is gonna be awesome for ten years you're gonna have a ten year run so you had that with manning but it's like if you only get one ten year run-in your fandom lifetime what what's the best age to have that is that when you're like you know ten like early like preteen teenager where that's gonna be like this core memory that lasts forever your teens into early adulthood where maybe you can be out at bars watching it and you know enjoying the city and for what it has and then maybe maybe it's good when you're in your fifties and you've been a long suffering fan and then you finally get to watch this decade of prosperity so what's what is the best era in life to watch your team be successful i'm forty one years old and i i think it's forty to fifty i do and and and i do and i think about like when the colts won the super bowl i was a junior in college and it was so much fun and i partied so hard but i was like so dumb and so stupid and like of course i appreciate it many years later but like my life is insane kids work got very little time it's like to to like be able to walk into like a sunday and experience what i previously experienced in the manning era now dude like i think i think like you know that that's it like i just feel like having that escape where the team is just like has a chance to win the super bowl at the age i am right now would be would just be the ultimate so ask me again in ten years and i'll probably say from fifty to sixty but i i i really feel like this this era right now would be not more knowledge than ever you can you can consider like the decisions made everything like i have a pretty good understanding with of team building like at least watching teams be built like what works what doesn't drafting and all this stuff and i've just seen absolute dog shit for the last ten years and it's like man i would really appreciate bill pullen a younger him his younger self stepping in and just being let me take care of this right now i'm not gonna like sign me up for that so what about you what do you think yeah i want it right now right yeah please be entering i like to think the bears are there or are headed in the right direction i believe in this head coach which is great i believe in this quarterback the it still makes me nervous to fully go all in and expect to win every sunday anytime i kind of start to tip over that way the bears end up blowing it and doing something so just taking it a game at a time but i don't know i've i've been through some brutal brutal years and at this point i just wanna see them because you think like when the bears lost the super bowl to the colts in my mind if they were still set up like if you told me the bears aren't gonna go back to the super bowl for at least twenty years i'd be pretty upset you were at the time thinking this is the new norm and oh my leg goes to the super bowl and okay next year they'll win the super bowl and then of course that doesn't happen so yeah just i just hope i hope to experience it one day i hope to experience sustained success from my team okay great questions everybody thank you for submitting those as always every week nfl check-in so you kind of yeah i got nothing more to say hate that that's all i got to say about that you have a quote written down though oh i do i do where is this oh wait yeah great lyric yeah and so ajm you have it in here somewhere yeah he said can you give stacking slabs some space to talk about the colts they caught some strays on bill simmons' podcast from ajm cards it's it's funny bill simmons could care less about what he has to say about football and the colts but i do appreciate the builder that is bill simmons and the model that he has made with the ringer definitely inspiration but yeah i wrote down when when i saw this question i wrote down but i'm not crazy i'm just a little unwell i know right now you can't tell but stay a while maybe then you'll see a different side of me so quoting rob thomas matchbox twenty for whatever reason when i read his question it was like the cold sucking bill simmons talking shit it was just like all i could hear is rob thomas in my head and so i just wrote wrote those lyrics yeah that is a i'd laughed out loud when i just saw that line written down matchbox twenty yourself or someone like you first cd i ever owned as a kid not a bad one not i'd no pretty pretty good taste if i say so myself then i was looking that album is i think fifteen times platinum twelve x platinum yeah diamond album bunch of hits on there and then unwell was on the next album mad seed yes from two thousand but you know what's weird about thanks we're getting into a little universe of rob thomas in matchbox twenty which i never thought we'd be at but what's interesting is i would imagine his highest selling matchbox or rob thomas' most money he's ever made might have been on you know the carlos santana album with smooth smooth that that's probably his biggest hit of all time absolutely it's a hot one it's seven inches from the midday sun what a rob thomas was on a run is there a i need a rob thomas rookie card yeah so do i i i actually for my birthday went went to vegas when i who was this a couple years ago and went to a wrestling show but also went to see santana and i was like we gotta see santana he's here let's go see him front row i'm like watching carlos santana just rip it i'm like dude this guy is just legend look at this guy go and i'm like i wonder if they're gonna do smoothie because there's no way rob thomas is here and sure shit like of course he did smooth and they had some fill in and i was like man like this is just as good and then they did maria maria and all this stuff and i was like man santana rocks so shout out santana i remember exactly where i was when smooth came out i i i can see the music video i can smell the air but that song is iconic oh yeah and even the rob thomas wikipedia so it says he is the lead vocalist for the florida based rock band matchbox twenty which formed in ninety five released five studio albums as a solo ex act he is best known for his guest appearance on santana smooth so they're not even saying he's best known for matchbox twenty they're saying he's best known for smooth which won three grammy awards yeah shout out shout out smooth dude the guitar lick in smooth is iconic oh yeah like that is that is such a icon and i love it how it crosses eras because you've got this iconic artist in carlos santana you know woodstock that era and then he came back in the late nineties and put out this album and did collaborations and just that album is freaking brilliant like that whole thing just rocks go listen to it oh yeah i'm looking at the track list of yourself or someone like you back to good real world real world man hits yeah three am and push three am the two biggest bangers yes i'm putting this i know what i've listened into this afternoon second this pot ends sorry before we move off of this here's a fun one saul must have been in high school here's the concert happened at bankers life which is now game bridge where the pacers play opening act lifehouse oh then you follow that by with everclear and then headlined then headlined yes then then headlined by matchbox twenty that's okay i i i might beat it on my first concert ever was deer creek okay opener fastball oh my god and this this is gotta be ninety six ninety seven fastball goo goo dolls and then wow sugar ray dude that is a that is a that is a show i love the fastball call out that that debut released out of my head like oh yeah the way the the way dude we could i mean i could i could i could we're probably isolating the audience now but i i we i could literally talk nineties one offs for the end of time the fact that fastball was brought up in this podcast really has made my day so thank you for that that was the the one hit wonder era too not that they were one hit wonders they had at least two but i don't know the like baha men and lou bega and that whole era of music that one song would make an album go diamond because you had to go buy the cd to get the song you know baha men spent a little time living in indianapolis say what baha men spent a little time living in indianapolis did they yeah you know the house off of kessler there the big monster one that's always under construction they live there for a bit what we could take it offline okay what i i was just about to say the baja men are still spending who let the dogs out money and the power doing it to buy houses right down the street i gotta go check this out alright yeah team talk for me by the time this goes live the bears will have either beaten the patriots and i will be fully onto this team can win a super bowl mindset or if they lose it's not gonna be doom and gloom over here because the patriots i think are a really good team but the a win on a win thursday would be great so just just win just win baby i'm gonna lift vicariously through you this year okay you can do it welcome we are there's plenty of room on the the caleb and the bears bandwagon because everyone the haters are out people don't like you know caleb has a thirty for thirty six game leads the league in completion percentage now all of a sudden his average throw distance isn't enough so the the haters and doubters of which there are many are always gonna move the goalposts but whatever thirty for thirty six three hundred yards sick he leads the league in completion percentage that's crazy to go from dead last to first smaller sample size but as of now okay market watch market watch we're gonna get in get out shout out card ladder for making this data very easy we got the twenty two panini select xrc black bryce young rookie card one of one in case still incredible that this card hasn't been popped out and graded it sold on golden for fourteen thousand nine hundred and forty five dollars bryce young cards people want them yeah i love these black xrcs especially with the black jersey this looks this is a really cool card of bryce and yeah shout out panthers i'm a great panthers over here i like the panthers i like the color match the black on black jerseys that's in the parallel sick we had the first ever randy moss superfractor go off the board two thousand and five top strap picks and prospects black superfractor randy moss one of one in a psaa sold them fanatics weekly for thirteen thousand two hundred dollars wow and so is this though i was thinking about this as i've been doing my like super factor research black super factor is there also a gold super factor in this release the gold the gold super this is they're just ref they're called black super factors but this yeah this is the gold super factor for whatever super factor i learned about it a long time ago and i can't recall there's a there's like a i don't know there's a blowout thread on this set got it well then i know like how psa labels a card on the flip is a hundred percent from what the manufacturer listed as on the checklist like the whole o four finest refractor extractor thing even though the card says gold extractor like psa says because like the top's finest on the official checklist calls them refractor x factors so like even though the card says gold x factor they go off of what the the checklist says so i bet that's a situation here where they just call this the black super factor or my priest holmes o five finest is called super factor die cut one of one like it's not just superfractor it's superfractor die cut is what the name is officially but yeah this is an awesome card shout out raiders moss yeah shout out i was gonna say shout out raiders randy moss should should we it would be hilarious if our bit was this is the this is the best version of randy moss oh yeah you know with that people would love that yeah best raiders receiver in history get the raider nation mad we were pro raider nation and then they got all mad they're in our backs on us like this is what this is why you're always pedestrian because when someone comes to support you just kick them down start mendoza start mendoza ninety eight tops gold label football class two barry sanders one of one in a psa eight you got the gold lab label you got the class two eleven thousand six hundred and sixty eight dollars which i would imagine if this card just had one class this card would be probably more valuable but i i i am not i've never been crazy about the dub we talked about this but the double shot like the two images on one card i just not not for me but i know a lot of people who listen to this show love gold label but yeah not a set i love but big slug nonetheless i like the dual shot if the shots are different or it's like helmet off and then action shot is like a combo that i like but this is kinda like the same buried making a move image twice which yeah then feels a little unnecessary mhmm okay we move over to oh cam scataboo we've got his twenty five prism black finite psa ten the reason why i selected this card is because in march this card sold for seventeen thousand six hundred and five dollars on alt then it sells on fanatics on the eighteenth of october for seven thousand eight hundred dollars wow that's what happens when you try and prospect on skill position players coming off an injury i remember this sale the seventeen k sale just seemed yeah wild at the time so yeah still still a cool card but probably i bet that if that sells again it still has a ways to go even down even a little further if i had to guess it in another year unless cam comes and has like a all world season doubtful this year but yeah final card o six top's finest antonio gates superfractor one of one raw six thousand two hundred on the ebay machine that's a big sale that's higher than i thought which this makes me feel better about my pre storms purchase i know i thought i thought of you once i saw it i was like okay so my valuations aren't far off so very cool card i mean i love the supers from o five and o six but yeah that's the highest selling ever antonio gates card now sixty two hundred a player that feels like he's got a there's a ton of room in his cards if that's the highest selling card yeah most touchdowns in yep by tight end in nfl history that's something he was awesome for a long time yeah alright collecting updates what are the current collecting projects you're focusing your resources on any any pickups no pickups for me what about you nothing sold cards cards ended at auction how'd you do good right where i i thought i would be nice it's crazy how auctions always work out where something ends lower than i thought but then something ends higher than i thought and it all kinda worked out but then of course i look at it i'm like oh those ones that ended lower i should've just sold direct like if i just listed that as a buy it now price i bet someone would've bought forward keep moving forward keep moving forward okay card call out i think i've got one yeah let's hear that nothing last week was trench warfare this week just inserts we talked about inserts earlier and i feel like just opening it up let's see a cool insert card that you like or and you can talk about why you like the insert set that it's in i mean bonus points if you have an entire set of an
