The Football Card Podcast #68: You Got the Card. Why Do You Want Another?

hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john a k a pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking slabs himself brett how you doing i'm well i'm ready to talk football cards i'm ready to talk football what a time to be alive we're in it the first quarter of the season is complete which is wild to think about it went by quick i'm imagining we'll blink there'll be ten more episodes in the can and we'll be talking about the playoffs so this is what happens life is an nfl fan and a collector things move quite quickly yeah these weeks are slipping time keeps on slipping into the future as someone once said are are you is is this a steve miller band reference or is it a seal reference which one are you going with i was thinking steve on that one castillo covered it right yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah i can't believe i mean you saying it out loud like four gone first quarter over it's it's happening it's all happening very fast and i don't like it where you know do that three more times four more times and we're done we're gone with football and then we have to figure out what to do for another off season because then we're gonna run out of numbers mhmm and we're we're looking by then we'll be into the eighties wide receiver winter but then who knows what's gonna happen in the doldrums of february and march for the football card pod we'll have to figure something out to spice it up i like the thoughts of like potentially commemorating hall of famers or featuring super bowls like there's we've got we've got time like it's it's not over yet there or they're not there's not like green day time of your life good riddance is not like playing in the background and more like fading into the mist like we've got sometimes so i've learned this over the years talking to my therapist it's like be in the moment like talk about where you're at like focus on the present which is something that i very much struggle to do so i'm going to choose to focus on the present and say you know what only a quarter that means we got three quarters left in the playoffs we got plenty of time john i love it i love it and colts are hot how does he wanna tell oh but you know it's funny before last night last night's monday night football game the colts were the that win was the largest win of the week they had won by seventeen points and then last night the falcons sorry saints fans beat the brakes off the saints and they won by twenty one points but i will say this as a lifelong colts fan i've never certainly thrilled with winning i i will take a win all day every day but i don't think i've ever watched my team win by seventeen points and then afterwards still be like you know what we've got a lot of lot of questions on our team like i wonder how this is gonna shake out so i'll take the win all day every day twice on sunday certainly but yeah i can't i can't say that like i am calling for the super bowl right now although i can say if i looked at this schedule at the beginning of the year which i did and looked at the first four games i distinctly said to my colts friends if we're two and two after this going into pittsburgh like i'll be thrilled and so that's where we're at right now love that go beat pittsburgh go beat rogers and mccarthy i'd i i wanna see that dysfunction continue to brew and escalate i think i might have to pick against the colts and pick them because historically historically no matter what bad of we always catch the steelers on a bad stretch and we are always their get back game every time every time there's dysfunction like i attended roethlisberger we were on a three game win streak and i think the steelers were on a two or three game skid and i went to pittsburgh and watched roethlisberger throw six touchdowns last year the they were the first team to beat the colts to end their winning streak it's just they always have our number so yeah i hope i hope we can kinda kinda put some some safeguards in and just keep playing ball but we'll see we never play well there how how are you feeling about the chicago bears right now pretty good i'm so thankful for ben johnson all the years of watching garbage head coaches and garbage teams is worth it to have ben johnson i trust this man with my life just can win with anybody just case keenum getting a dub tyson bagan getting a dub just running the ball i love it just pounding the rock so packers week though and this feels like it could be a changing of the a true changing of the guard moment of if the bears go into green bay and get a w kind of solidify themselves as the new top of that rivalry or like you know they won the last two games last year both in miraculous fashion though so i would love to go see the bears go in and just beat the packers down me thinking that me thinking that's a possibility and wanting that to happen historically means the bears are gonna go in and get blown out and that's gonna like fix green bay's mojo and they're gonna turn their ship and ascend to the top of the north so i'm not expecting it especially without caleb where i mean they'll be playing with a backup quarterback but i don't know just get a win this is always these are always stressful weeks of the season packers games so if the bears can just get that win in green bay go to four and one i'll feel very good about the season so no doubt i didn't realize it was packers bears week always excited even for outsiders to watch that rivalry take shape i i just you know impromptu i feel obligated to just mention this because we never talk about this team and we never really talk about the player outside of like poking fun at the absurd downtown gold vinyl one of one rookie sale of this player but i just wanna like let's let's give some love to bryce young i mean it's this this guy he has been through it all and man as he played good football i saddled up because it's easy to do after you win on sunday night and watched panthers lions and what i saw from bryce young was really good quarterback play i think he is you know he's at the top of a lot of the quarterback stats he's just balling out and it's this debate that i've seen kinda percolate online and i think it's true although i wanna like temper colts fans a lot because a lot of colts fans are like see what happens when you let a player like develop it's like yeah there's it's a little bit of a different scenario even though they're the same draft class between bryce young and anthony richardson but yeah man i think bryce young has been nothing but amazing publicly going through adversity and so it is it is fun to see a player prevail and he's playing really really good football and also yeah i don't know if it justifies whatever the crazy figure is for that bryce young gold vinyl downtown one of one with a massive panther on it saying keep pounding but i just wanted to show some love from bryce young upfront because typically we're kinda dumping on these young quarterbacks because they're not playing well because their cards are priced to the moon but bryce young he's going the other direction yeah that week one bears panthers fifty nine thirty four and everyone was making fun of the bears defense of like oh well that's the problem they gave up thirty four i watched that game thinking bryce young is a baller like he just looked really good and i was like yeah i think the bears d is suspect but he also the panthers offense they've got dudes kinda everywhere and that's i mean every week since then they've you know put together some impressive performances offensively so yeah i think panthers are legit that's fun they're a fun team to when they're good it's just that nfc south it's always fun to see that revolving door it is and my question is because i'm just thinking about this with two prime time games is the monster wide receiver back like ted mcmillan and then drake london these guys are monsters out there and they're just balling out i'm like do we have the genetic freaks back at the w r position because if we do sign me up i'm all for it okay that gonna call back to this we have a question later where i had we were asked for some nicknames and this is kind of connecting a couple dots in my brain so well that's a little teaser for the questions for later but we need the big receivers back we need those big the big guys back running around so it's good to see that's happening indeed i had a topic if you if you'd be open to it to kinda kick off this episode because it's been something that's on my mind my personal use case also watching people conversate online but there is this feeling we have as collectors and it is a feeling that is not exclusive to you i promise you we're all going through it and it's you're just always chasing something and even when you land a card you've wanted a long time it is almost hard to celebrate that because we as collectors always want to move on to the next like i have just had this happen it's like why can't i just stay put and just celebrate so i wanted to open this up because i'd imagine a lot of our audience goes through this regularly and just ask the question like how can collectors do a better job of celebrating what we just acquired before moving on to the next card this is a this is a good one i mean i i've been searching for this answer myself i feel like there's always the feeling of once i get this card the dust will settle and i can finally sit back and admire what i've built admire this collection it's just like once this deal goes through and i sell things and to buy and fund this one single card it'll all click into place and it'll be like thanos sitting back where i can just like finally and that that never comes that feeling never comes and i don't know if it ever will and i think that stretches beyond cards like literally how stop and smell the roses is advice that people say all the time live in the moment how how do we do that in our day to day life how do we do that in our collecting life it's so easy to just get caught up in the alright i did that got that what's next so i think everyone wants that answer in cards and life how do you kinda slow down and appreciate what's going on versus always thinking about the next thing but so yeah any if if anyone does have that answer i'm all ears i'd love to know in listening to you talk about this because i didn't really have a response to my own question but i have a question back that i think is interesting to explore and that question is there is a first maybe just some thoughts there is just this idea that we as collectors build these collections and we love these cards and that is what we do we just acquire these cards and we build these collections but i think like one thing that maybe doesn't get enough consideration is a lot of us like we we really like the movement like we like the fight like cards popping up and their their the those cards being priced cheaper than what we would pay for them so we buy them and so like i think deep down like a lot of us just really enjoy the gamification of sports cards in a way where it's like the if we just stayed stagnant it would be fun and we'd probably get more utility value and enjoy our cards maybe more but part of collecting cards is the process of acquisition and within the process of acquisition there's different strategies and philosophies and mindsets and i just think like as as an operator like we should take note of that and i think it's okay i think i think it is okay to really enjoy the thrill of the chase it's really okay to like look at your collection and be like you know what these cards aren't doing it for me anymore i'm gonna sell them or if a card unexpectedly pops up you like having to make those decisions because it involves like critical reasoning and self reflection and just do it and i just don't think like when we talk about people selling cards and oh i can't believe they did this like a lot of times like i think just the in the dna of the collector it's just like the the fact that we enjoy the process of like movement is something that is notable to me yes i've been thinking about that a lot where i'm i enjoy the active part of it more and more like the the buying the selling the seeing things pop up that i've been like doing the research discovering something setting the safe search seeing the safe search pop up seeing it pop up for a price you think is undervalued based on your research or it's or a best offer and then you get to go into the negotiation and then oh the person has an instagram i can go into a negotiation there and oh they have other cards and like the whole the community part of this feeds into the active part of it like the fact that we all have these instagram accounts and that we're all interacting on there leads to us seeing more cards leads to transactions and yeah i'm just having more fun doing that part of it than ever before and i don't think there's anything wrong with that i think that and we've touched on this i think being active on that level though does lead to lots of the like conflicts that people call out of the like oh he said this and then he sold that or like this and that and so it's again always like how you you know navigate that but i think the the act activeness of it all is very fun to me and i don't think there's anything wrong with that but yeah i feel like the the answer to the how to stay stay put and sit back and admire your collection i feel like i'm finding new ways to do that and especially just like okay how do i what am i trying to say with each of these projects do these cards do that what cards do i need to do that just continuing to you know take the collection out and think about it and refine it is always helpful too so yeah i don't know there's no answer to how to stop and smell the roses you just gotta do it no you know how you have like this wasteland of time sometimes it's like you get done with a call at work or you get done with a project and then you gotta go like pick up your kids and you you look at it and you you have to leave in like twenty minutes to pick up your kids and you're like man there's there's just not enough time to do anything else and so like you get on your phone it's like that is the time that i'm going upstairs and it's been a lot of fun and i've done this more over the last like couple weeks than i've done it i probably over the last couple months but i just i just take the collection and put it on my bed and i lay on my bed open up the box and i'm just like pulling up the cards and like pair them together i'm like man i haven't like really i've seen the scan on card letter shout out card letter but i have not like really seen these cards in a while and it's just it's making me happy man because in that moment you know like you're like this card is not going anywhere because it means this much to me so i don't know like anyone out there struggling to find time for your collection like we all have these wasteland moments in our days like go use the wasteland moment spend time with your cards it'll be a lot of fun even if it's only for like ten fifteen minutes taking them to bed i haven't taken them to bed intimacy there there we go the visual of you laying there i was just thinking of like the the thriller album cover i was like yes instead of with a little baby tiger you've got the you got a andrew luck finite curled up it's got protection it's all good yeah and one other point or just thinking about this like back to the topic of like what do you do with the cards like to someone who doesn't collect or it's like you just get the cards what do you do like and the the reason that we like collecting and like i love the process of the research of the hunt of the like sharing about it and like sharing it with a community of people who also appreciate these same little factors that no one else really understands it's like all of that is so much as much fun as like getting the actual card so it's like that that's why i participate in this hobby just it's it's not just so i can have a card in a box in a closet it's like so that i can engage in all these other things that kinda you know set me off like the research part i just love seeing some sort of card and then just going down the rabbit hole it's like alright we're going to trading card database now and we're gonna spend a little bit of time on here we're oh we're gonna go here now like i can do that all night i probably do that too much honestly of just wasting too much time because that's another good call out those i need a good name for that like what is that twenty minute dead time like between calls between you know segments of life and and how we use that because i'm on my phone too much probably during those times where it's like twenty minutes that's not enough time to do anything i just i'm either gonna go on ebay and check save searches or maybe i'll just go on card ladder and look at recent sales or just look at my collection i don't know so yeah how to better need a good name for that that that dead zone but it will come up with the name we'll brand it we'll sell some t shirts yep it doesn't need to be your bed you can do it on the floor but there's there's something magical about taking out the cards and putting them on a surface and just like a like just arranging them and it's like man it it can be your there was a there was a jobber wrestler back in the nineties his name was barry horowitz and he he lost every match but when he'd get in the dropkick in the match he'd pat himself on the back and i'm just like this this is the moment where you just pat yourself on the back you're like look at all this money i spent on this and i still love it so it's like we all need to give ourselves those moments where we pat ourselves on the back and put our cards on the floor or the bed if you really love them yeah there's something about laying them out in volume two because that's true like the the bed is a good sized surface to really expand everything versus my desk in the office it's like i can't really fully laid out all my cards in the the way i'd want and i love the exercise of like when i set up one of these days when i set up at the national or some show not to sell just to present like how am i arranging it i get two like this lights up the whole probably autistic part of my brain where i love like alright how do i order these so that there's like a connection to each one where it's like okay this player goes next to this player because they're both the same parallel and then like this parallel can go next to this one because it's the same year or like whatever and figuring out how to like i have ten cards how do i line them up in a way that each of them somehow has a connection point that satisfies my brain yeah because i'm like struggling with that now i have like five current one of ones three of them are caleb williams current bears players one of ones like three caleb williams a deandre swift and a colston loveland it's like do i order them where the three calebs are together but the swift and the caleb are the same parallel and the loveland and the caleb are the same parallel so if i do that then it it gets all messed up and i i can spend so much time just sitting there just messing with how how do i organize these we in my alone time with my cards dude i was battling this too it's just just a it was a mental gymnastics i was like i was looking at my colts black finites and i just i i ended up just leaving everything put but it was do i order these all by the year of release mhmm do i put the locks together do i put the t y scale and it's just like i couldn't land on anything and i was like if i do this by the years then this twenty fourteen luck is so far away from this twenty eighteen luck and is that really what i want am i representing the product in the year that they're released or am i representing the player i wanna do both but i can't do both when i'm trying to file them away so it's yes dude this is the nerdy stuff i'm glad we could get to here on the football card podcast it's this is what we do it for we do it for this everybody thanks for thanks for being here we appreciate you shout out football card pod listeners shout out us sixty eight weeks straight great opening topic any other final thoughts on no i think that's good that that had a lot more meat on the bone than i was expecting so yeah we're good opening topic good job episode sixty eight sixty eight weeks straight sixty eight weeks straight just an incredible feat of podcasting in my opinion and we keep it going let's talk about pick'em though real quick shout out to loyal listeners the football card pod and the loyal participants of the football card podcast pick'em league if you go to weekly you will see that the week four champion was me yet again tied for first though with melt banana shout out melt banana great name we both went thirteen and three in week four so i think it's official i know ball i think have proven that i know ball by taking home first in week three and week four but still in the full standings that has moved me up to sixth place but in first place sole possession of first place is nick's basketball pc can you believe that we let a basketball collector come in here and take over the top spot of the football card pod pick them that's just it's insane so shout out knicks enjoy your moment at the top i'm coming for you other football card collectors are coming for you mhmm the guy black hat cards i'm looking has dropped down to also tied for sixth so but it's it's tied up there so nick is in first with thirty four wins thirty four points and i mean like people are right there's tons of teams right there at thirty three thirty two thirty one thirty so it's tight up top you know one good week can can change everything so shout out everyone participating in in the football card pod pick them get your picks in and yeah we'll keep it going k the black hat mention always triggers the minnesota vikings of it all can can brian florida flores win mvp yeah that's insane how like you've just figured something out like alright i'm just gonna do these crazy blitzes and no one's ever gonna figure it out it's like why aren't other teams doing this like how how does he have the the sauce but he does he's just a yeah genius a wizard yeah he's he's he's priming himself for a return at the head coaching position that's that's for damn sure yeah get him out of the division i don't want nothing to do with that guy get him out in that nfc north and then oh shout out football card pod in the wild feel like just gonna build this into a a new segment we had j a c h t x h t x at the texans game then he was at the superdome right then he was at the superdome last night yeah we're recording this on tuesday little schedule change for the football card pod but he posted that and i thought i was i thought it was like the same post again and then i realized wait this is a different game and i was like is this ai you're how are you at every game and he's just like sees it texan season tickets but he's a lifelong saints fan so he gets over to new orleans a couple times a year for games so dude die hard this is this is how you spread the football card podcast gospel right here already in the consideration of the football card podcast hall of fame because of this multiple games in a couple days like yeah you're jack htx you are you are a saint we appreciate you yeah making our superdome debut i think that you know the the dome coming is what they call this when the football card pod gets played can you imagine if there was some sort of wi fi bluetooth crossover where instead of the game audio they picked up his i iwatch his apple watch and started streaming football card pod audio to the monday night football audience that would have been something we don't require any royalties feel free whoever the operators at those stadiums if in like pregame if you just wanna wire in what we're talking about here and pump it throughout the stadium like we're we won't charge you anything yeah little audio malfunction oops i accidentally that's the next level like that's cool that you listen to the football car pod in the wild you know in headphones how do you start broadcasting it out like you know go into the the phone at the walmart and like hacking in and announcing over the loudspeaker that there's a new episode of the football card pod or just being the guy on the subway blaring music out of a speaker it's just us football card pod and then the cardboard cave on their way to set up at a show so that's another great time to listen to the football card pod and any hobby content you know maybe other hobby content on the stack and slides network but on the way to the show get your mind right for card show action which is also what bolt card crew did on their way to the midwest monster which was over the weekend i was out of town i'm bummed i wanted to go there i always love i mean it's just the biggest local show for me it's always nice to do a few laps and see some cool cards so yeah shout out to everyone listening to the football card pod in the wild ten thousand points for each of you and let's see you know where we can see the football card pop up next week episode sixty eight sixty eight big ugly autumn marches on we we got a few big uglies this week we've got kevin mawai will shields russ grimm and then i gotta get this name right because i'm gonna talk about him i think i butchered it a couple weeks ago which maybe he had multiple numbers but joe de la malleur is how i think is how i'm saying i'm reading the phonetic you know pronunciation of it and it's de la malleur so shout out joe d and let's talk about him real quick because he was a guard for the bills for a maybe all time nickname for a group of players the electric company mhmm the bills offensive line paving the way for oj simpson to rush for two thousand three yards in nineteen seventy three first player in nfl history to pass the two thousand yard mark and it was in fourteen games so joe was paving the way as a three time first team all pro four time second team all pro six time pro bowler hall of famer it just got me thinking like the electric company and the the bills like the oj bills are kind of a like blind spot for me in a way you know i just haven't done the research i'm not a bills fan so scrolling through and looking at some numbers and impressive and shout shout out to oj bills we're gonna separate the the art from the artist here on the football card pod and i'm just purely giving props to oj for his rushing abilities not necessarily his knife skills or anger skills just shout out oj the runner yeah i mean dude i mean i've watched all the documentaries i never heard a guilty verdict in all of that yeah i don't think you did it oh man transitioning from oj there's always so much i wanna say but i'll just leave it at that i had to pick kevin mawai he was a man amongst boys just destroying everybody so he was a seahawk from ninety four to ninety seven i think most of us remember him as a jet from ninety eight to o five titans o six to o nine twenty nineteen hall of fame class three time first team all pro four time second team all pro nfl all decades team the stat that i love the most about kevin mawai is this kevin mawai had in a thousand yard rusher in thirteen of his sixteen pro seasons he had and i love the finding the names here chris warren just such a nostalgic name i had not thought about chris warren in forever so two hundred thousand yard season with chris warren curtis martin seven partnership with curtis martin great football name on here travis henry once and then chris johnson twice but that just seemed like so compelling to me it's like if this guy's on your offensive line chances are you're gonna rush for a thousand yards so kevin why obviously offensive lineman not too many cool cards but i did find this one which was his obviously a we have his post playing day card but it's in his jets jersey twenty twenty one this card in june tenth of twenty twenty two sold for two hundred dollars i'm just like man people who are buying this stuff like this in twenty two are probably sitting pretty so just a just a monster of among men kevin moy that's a great list of running backs shout out travis henry yep travis travis henry was balling there for a few years and i mean it's great to see the common denominator was kevin just paving the way because yeah travis henry pro bowler in two thousand two yeah that's awesome i also i also wanna shout out you mentioned him up top but will shields like he was mhmm absolutely dominant at his position for a very very long time so i was like torn at like who do i feature moai or shields but we went with moai but shields was incredible yes as a priest holmes advocate fan lover will shields was paving the way there in kansas city for several of those record setting years in two thousand two and two thousand three shields was a first team all pro and part of his twelve straight pro bowls from ninety five to o six that is damn started two hundred and twenty three out of a possible two hundred and twenty four games just this is a perfect almost perfect booking pro football reference where he played fourteen seasons sixteen games each year and only in his rookie year he started fifteen of the sixteen but otherwise he's sixteen out of sixteen every single year pro bowls twelve out of his fourteen first team all pro two out of them second team all pro four so what a career for will shields so the big uglies that have sustainability are an interesting group because it's like when you think a big ugly on the offensive line you're just like oh they'll put whatever in their body they'll just do this they're just monsters it's like in order to have that sort of longevity and dominance like you and be that big for that long and to maintain that size like you have to have some sort of special regimen going on you know like these are the biggest humans on earth like biggest strongest they're so fast too liman's like don't look fast ever compared to skill position players but they're still running like four nine four ten forties like these are freak specimens and then you're just getting into car wreck after car wreck every snap just smashing into another equally large freakish human so to to do that for fourteen years straight is pretty insane and pretty incredible yeah just the just go look up like kevin mawai pulling or will shields pulling like on youtube and just like get your popcorn out like these guys are just insane athletes yeah and for fourteen years straight to never get hurt at a lineman position where i feel like saying every time there's a run i'm like oh three people's knees just got blown up and then everyone gets up i'm like how are you know getting rolled over getting hit from behind and that there is a skill i feel like for like awareness on knowing not where to like put your feet so you don't mess up an ankle or a knee like that's like a underrated like skill and attribute i feel like that to just avoid injuries in like for over fourteen years to avoid hurting your knee in all these pile ups that are happening thirty times a game that you're on the field for forty times a game like that is a skill in itself so shout out the big uglies that yeah have durability and are able to do that alright should we get into some questions questions okay first up from dan's card account and this is the one i alluded to earlier dan wants to know if players other than william perry had kitchen appliance based nicknames who and what the first great creative question the first one that came to my mind was dwight the blender freeny yeah because you know he he he put quarterbacks in a blender and just that thinking about how to spin move and all that like that's and then i also thought like just because i respect him a lot i thought like the garbage disposal for derrick henry because he's like grinding out each like last yard every play so those those were the two that came to my mind i love that mine was so i like this thought exercise of just sitting on my couch looking into my kitchen like alright what's in there what's a good name and so like the microwave it's like alright small fast electric maybe a darren sproles chargers darren sproles specifically the microwave could i think have some staying power there with the lightning bolt you know he's little i think there's something there then the oven as a stadium nickname i need to see a team that really embraces the heat the way that the packers have the lambeau field the frozen tundra like give me arizona i know the dome is nice but what if they had the oven where imagine visiting teams going to play outdoors for a hundred and twenty degrees just can you withstand you know some time in the oven that that's just a home field that i guess maybe jacksonville and tampa bay have that a little bit miami miami yeah but yeah but the oven as a nickname for field and then one i was thinking about i was thinking about like the stovetop and you know you have like the back burners the big burner like i love the big burner and that's where i'm like who who's a receiver that could be the big burner like who's like i need six four six five but like thick like who's the the tight end on the steelers right now that washington something washington oh he he's huge is it is it paul washington darnell washington darnell washington yeah darnell washington might be the big burner because he's let me pull he's six seven two sixty four good luck stopping him boy he's i don't think he's fast enough to be the big burner though and so that's where big burner to me was someone maybe like david boston or terrell owens could be the big burner so yeah those were those were some of the nicknames that came to mind alright next up from clemson collector does mixing bowman university into twenty twenty six bowman help college collecting by exposing collectors to mainstream college cards or hurt by tacking them into a much more expensive box than premium bowman u products this is i've i have been very high on a lot of decisions that have been made to from tops and what they've done especially like i've talked a lot in my content about just like marketing growth that sort of thing and even like new products that have come out this is mostly from the lens of like we've talked about chrome football and how we both like the look of it i've liked the wwe products this is one decision that i think is sucks like i don't like this decision at all for context because i i have no idea what so bowman university was a standalone product yes they folded that and like bowman university type cards are now in just a regular bowman product right bowman features nfl players and college players and like i've watched like packs being opened in theirs like i don't know what configuration it what it is like megabox i don't know what it was but there's like these big packs with just like a bunch of base cards and they're just a bunch of like random nfl players and then college cards are buried in there and i just to me like college collecting is there's such an identity associated with it and there's a little bit there's a level of purity too where a lot of college collectors are just like that is their team they they might watch nfl but like they care a lot more about their college football program and there's a unique group of collectors and i just i'm not a fan of this i just don't think batching them together and of course there's business reasons for this obviously that's why it's being done but i think it takes away from the college collector as as opposed to and i'm not even talking about price like the boxes i'm sure are expensive i don't know what the msrp is on them but if you are giving them cards that they don't want which are nfl cards and you're increasing the price like that there there's there this can't be good for a college fan so i'm a i'm negative on it i think it's shitty i i loved the bowman u standalone like i would buy it i would buy into brakes and i was way more interested in it than i am in its current setup yeah that makes sense in the like yes i agree i i would not like that if i were a college football collector and i had this specific stand alone product i enjoyed and now it's even priced even higher and then i'm not fully getting just that i would not like it i wonder though like what this does like back to the question where he says will it help college collecting by exposing more collectors to college cards that i don't know and i'd be curious to see like what like i don't even know how you would track this just like who the hottest college player is right now and it's like are there is there a base bowman university whatever higher than like years comp comparable players years prior i don't know the answer to that i don't yeah it's hard to say like i interact with a lot of college collectors and and i haven't heard one person i've interacted with that is like pleased about this decision so that's that's where i'm coming from but i also like i don't buy into the this is this is going to be good because it exposes more people and they'll start collecting college cards like this hobby is short term and transactional and new product is typically being ripped to find the big grail card that they can go resell so i just i don't see that that with i don't see that i mean sure it might happen case by case but i don't think that's gonna happen in in volume yeah that's just me though next up from drake's pc and a follow-up to my question last week do you think there's value in sharing how we decided on which cards or cards to sell or trade and not necessarily why we are selling so what i think drake's getting at here is i think this touches on our topic of when we explain why we're selling a card or not so i think there's like that the public facing version of that or the explanation of why we are selling and maybe that explanation could be to fund another card or to fund a house project or something like that but then i think he's trying to get at is there value in sharing now how we decided which cards we're selling to fund this other project so like how i guess how you go about your judgment day when you're looking at twenty cards how do you do and you have to sell enough to cover five thousand dollars it's like how do you decide which ones to do is i guess maybe i think what he's getting at here but how'd you how'd you take this i think that's probably right i i i don't think i need that level of granularity when it comes to someone else's decisions on the regular now there certainly can be exceptions but if you've sold something i'm like if if if something were to be sold and there was a collector that keep giving explanations on the sale and the reasons why and stuff i i would almost my i would perceive that as like hey man you need to move on like go move on go move on to your next thing going is it like ripped and maybe it's because i am very much like rearview mirror like keep going like it's in the rearview but yeah i don't i don't know i just i'm not sure i need like a ton of explanation on why you've sold cards unless like the card and the subject that i'm interested in and i dm you and you're willing to talk about it then that's different but yeah i don't know that's just kinda how i see it yeah i don't know if it's need sharing necessarily but i do think there's something about like how you deal with it personally that's worth noting and tracking i think it's i might get this wrong so forgive me if you're a listener but like i think it's contrarian cards who's talked about his like he has like a top fifty list and maybe like using like okay i can if i sell cards thirty two and eighteen to get a card that i would rank as number twelve like some sort of you know visualizing your collection that way i do think that's very interesting and helpful i'm kind of dealing with that right now where i'm looking at like the individual i call them projects within my collection and it's like okay like i'm trying to sell some stuff to get a new card and it's like alright within one project i can sell the bottom two like i have six cards in there i could sell the bottom two from that and another project that i have six cards i actually think i wanna sell the top one because of the value it's gonna bring and i don't like it has qualities that the market values more than i do like oh it's a psa ten and i don't necessarily i'd rather get the value from that than have that in my collection and so like i'm doing that right now where i'm like okay wait a minute if i sell the bottom two from this project the top from this project and like a middle card from this project i'm able to get a card that would be the top top of another project so i like i think there's you know and that's all my own like internal reasoning and my own internal ranking system like there's no one way to rank all these and to say what the best card is or what the top card is it's just more of when i like visualize it that way that helps and another thing that i'm dealing with with like a little consolidation right now when i lay cards out or when i just bring it back to viewing it as a trade things just click into place and it becomes much easier when i'm like oh i don't wanna sell each of these cards like these all mean a lot but then i lay it out and i'm like wait i could if i could just trade these four cards for that one card straight up no strings attached would i do it and i was like yes at like no question and then it becomes easier for me to sell some of these cards so there's something there about the core of this hobby is built on kids' trading cards where it's like i value this more than you do or like i really want that player because i like this team and i have four of these and you like this player so can i just make this trade happen so yeah i don't know i i seems drake is dealing with some selling selling some things got questions about what and why he's selling i just think trust your gut what you've done pretty well i think building an awesome collection drake don't don't second guess yourself keep going next up from t k d tickets not really a question but some more discussion about the fernando mendoza debut patch ticket collectors have dealt with this scenario joe montana's debut game was not as a quarterback but on special teams he started the season as the holder on extra points and field goals it was discovered by someone reviewing game video and seeing him on the field i realize that this won't happen with mendoza but it does show that this potential debut game question is real i like that a lot i like this little fold into the whole debut patch and the the mendoza debut patch watch that's currently going on bolt card crew damned me about this and he said i am tracking the mendoza is still wearing the debut patch every game until he plays i love that and that got me thinking is it the same jersey every game like because you know he's not wearing it and so is there just the debut patch out there or are they moving the debut patch to jersey so that they can harvest more logos for shield cards because right now if he's not seeing the field he's got one debut patch and one shield out there otherwise he might have four shields already that he's accumulated to start putting into cards and i don't imagine this happening because fernando's a pretty bright guy but can you imagine if the scenario was it's just the same jersey every time and he got caught up in like a big win and like one of his buddies like came over and like yo fernando jersey swap time and he that would be great if he who owns the rights to the debut patch at this point is it fernando is it the team is it fanatics that also got me thinking this whole thing is as like game jerseys and shields and all the the markets for those continue to increase there's gonna be a day where there's a bust like of a player gets caught wearing just like a makeshift sheet of like a hundred shields sewn on like a piece of fabric like under their jersey because then afterwards they're selling that to a manufacturer for a thousand bucks a pop of like hey here's a hundred game use shields i wore them in a game wear all these shields in a game that's gonna happen and yeah the whole shield market is gonna get rocked by this conspiracy when we find out that players are wearing twelve shields a game on their gloves and pants and there's so many shields when you look at sometimes a picture a lot of shields out there there is a lot it just takes one bad actor yeah alright and last question this was a late ad from zipz cards cosmic topscrone cosmic will age like fine wine thirteen total different parallels they are rare your thoughts i i like this just because i i think cosmic is sick i think it looks sick i keep seeing it in my like saved searches i set some saved searches the timing isn't right for me to collect it necessarily but it has tons of traits that i love in a set so i will just say go for it if it looks cool and it has i didn't know about that there's only thirteen parallels i think that's a pretty cool kinda limit to to have on a set that always makes it fun where the arena feels a little more manageable than some of these other sets so yeah and it just looks cool it's funky i think it's pretty cool i am certainly not here to pour cold bath water on any excitement that's that would be that that would be poor form i will say this personally i don't like anything about cosmic i think it looks silly and this is i just have always i'd like why do we need like meteors like what what is the what is the foundation and personally i i just keep going back to like tops like trying to build off of their primary platform which is tops chrome i mean i was listening to shout out hoops collector listening to max's podcast and he was actually like digging into like on the basketball side all of the sets that came out from tops this year and he was talking about tops chrome and it's like you got you got tops chrome you got tops chrome black you got tops chrome sapphire you got tops chrome cosmic you got tops chrome update there's like more and it's like there reaches this point even though there's only thirteen parallels there's like ten tops chrome brands that are dropping in a year and it's like to me that just like it it it loses its luster because of that so i think all of those brands are always just competing with the primary brand topps chrome and it's like if you like the cards and you see things and you like you love them then go for it like that's what this is all about that is awesome but i personally from a long term growth perspective i would have a hard time probably because i don't like it but just because it is a third or fourth topps chrome brand in topps chrome everything like i just have a hard time feeling like it's going to get a long term long term traction down the road but that's just me that's just my opinion on it i think what i like about it is that it is so visually different from like the main flagship stuff where like maybe you're just tired of like clean border lot of parallel like the look of like that's why i like some of the early finest football sets it's like oh these are kinda weird like o two finest is kinda weird compared to like two thousand two topps chrome which is like mhmm flagship premium looks good and when i look at cosmic to me i see like alright this is a very unique looking set like it doesn't look like a discount tops chrome set it looks like something completely its own which i like versus i think when you get into the like prism optic select like optic and select feel like just kind of they want to be prism whereas cosmic feels like it's doing its own thing completely where it's like i'm not even trying to look like tops like main tops chrome i'm out here doing something funky which i enjoy and then the fact that it might be then an easier entry point for collectors like i'm looking through some sales and a luca doncic basketball card pod topps cosmic superfractor his superfractor one zero one psa ten sold for eighteen thousand dollars which is a lot of money but for a luca superfractor it's relatively affordable i'd say i bet if you look at like the topps chrome lucas superfractor it's probably as easily a six figure card and maybe higher than you know just high up there so like just saying like if you're a collector and it's like wow i would love to one day have a lucas superfractor i kinda like that there are these brands that allow you maybe the possibility to one day do that for your guy where like caleb williams another thing like i could probably find his cosmic super fracture and it's like okay i could actually maybe get that where his top scrum super fracture is like way out of my range so at that point then i have to convince myself that cosmic is an awesome set if i go and buy his super fracture so i don't know i i totally hear that maybe even at having topps chrome in the name hurts it a little bit too where like maybe would have that been better as just like cosmic if it was just called cosmic on its own and it didn't feel like the fifth tops chrome but felt like the number one cosmic or something like that i don't i don't know you said something there and this is noncosmic related but i wanna get a gut check on you because this is interesting you do you do you think you think that optic and select are have always are trying to be prism that is that what you said yeah i think so i think like optical i always i view their identities to be a lot more separated than i do anything folded under the like topps chrome umbrella even though it looks like you know you've got mars and pluto and you're in space like even though it looks different i just i view it kind i view all the topps chrome stuff kind of one in the same but that's i always yeah i was just interested in kind of your position on that because i don't think that way but that's i guess just thinking of it as like the parallel structure almost and even kind of the look like optic comes out and twenty sixteen optic looks different than any of the other optics but then optic kind of falls into this just clean border look which to me is kind of what prism did where it's like prism differentiates itself every year by how its border looks essentially outside of twenty fourteen which is whatever and it's that kind of is a border in itself but just clean border the golds are out of ten and then there's a one of one chase card in these sets and they're top like chromium brands and then select kinda does its own thing with all the different levels but cosmic having just maybe it's just even having these different names of like the i'm doing they sound silly when i'm gonna read these out loud the blue moon refractor the black eclipse refractor dude i thought it was a kid's product the aqua equinox refractor the nucleus refractor orange galactic i mean they're all it's all doing the same thing it's like here's a version of the card with a different serial number i don't know i just like how i like how different it looks it's it's funky but whatever good question got a lot thanks zipscars for that one appreciate it alright nfl check-in oh we got a question for the nfl check-in from mostly soccer cards if kenneth walker continues on his current trajectory and wins nfl mvp does he enter the goat running back conversation as having a super bowl mvp and mvp already by age of twenty six no kenneth walker is an awesome player i really enjoy watching him play i think you go back to the first half of his career obviously he won a super bowl mvp which is amazing but he never carried like the load like he's carrying now he always split time split carries and so i think you would have to have multiple years of top one or two running back production in kansas city to be in even entertain that conversation also it's gonna be impossible to win the mvp when patrick mahomes is your quarterback i just i can't see it because you take patrick mahomes off the team kenneth walker is probably not averaging he's probably averaging you know half the yards a carry than he is now with patrick mahomes as a quarterback so again i feel like i'm just like shutting everything down now but i just kenneth walker i think that in order for that to happen it's gonna take a lot of time and he's gonna need to be absolutely insane for like the next four or five years yeah if he wins mvp this year first off that would be like i'm looking up mvp odds currently and josh allen's still front runner plus two seventy then you got purdy mahomes trevor lawrence lamar dak joe burrow stafford jahmeer gibbs is the first nine quarterback on the list at thirty to one so kevin kenneth walker is not even on this list and yeah even if he does like put up otherworldly mvp season he's that's now on top of like four seasons where he didn't have that like you said he wasn't the lead guy doesn't have that many like longevity stats to put on there like it would be hard to say like kenneth walker had this awesome playoffs run and a mvp season so that puts him in talks with these other running backs who have had like twelve unreal seasons twelve to fifteen unreal seasons what whoever you wanna talk about ten seasons but i mean yeah good player and he's definitely exciting to watch but i think skill players is just so hard like i feel like you have to be so good for so long to finally like get that due and like looking at his career stats like that doesn't doesn't jump off the page currently but few more years like you said if they have success and he just keeps running like this for a few years i don't know he can quickly get a little higher on the list perfect fit like that was a perfect move by the chiefs to bring him in and he's been awesome one as we're talking running backs i just i'd be remiss not to mention this because i thought it was cool is the fact that after this week jonathan taylor is the all time leader in international touchdowns which is a that's funny it's a which i'm like he needs a nickname because of that yeah he's just every time he goes international he just scores a lot of touchdowns so that was fun to which if anyone out there has watched the colts or is a colts fan the like the team is being carried by jonathan taylor offensively and deforest buckner defensively like i've never seen like watching a team two players like with the whole team on their back so i've long been an advocate for jonathan taylor so it's it's fun to see him like not slow down at all he's he's such a fun player to watch yeah that's awesome most international touchdowns i mean i feel like the jaguars are always playing over there you'd think it there'd be someone from a team that plays there more like i don't think of at tulsa i think etienne i think etienne's has the most yards but he has played like double the games as taylor because the jags are always there but but but taylor like took over the touchdowns after the gets to at ease yeah any other nfl no takeaways team talk nope alright let's get into some sales alright shout out card ladder there are some fun sales to talk about here's a good bin smash or is it a make this this is a crazy card twenty eighteen flawless shields signature patrick mahomes in a bgs nine five this card is just beautiful like it's a great looking football card this card sold on ebay and it sold the best offer on october fifth for two hundred thousand dollars how about that i no auction just like i'm gonna throw you an offer on this how about two hundred thousand offer accepted yeah great design like good looking card kind of i've talked about before how early shields i feel like they're trying to do too much with the design this does a good job of like here's a shield here's an autograph it's a one zero one this is the player how you doing how you doing yeah the by the way i just think life is better in the football world when i can tune in to the raiders and chiefs and be like this game is actually going to be competitive and that game was a lot of fun so yeah shout out raiders i know you lost but you're competing so that's always good we have a twenty eighteen rookie stained glass black finite of saquon barkley in a bgs ten this sold for twenty three thousand eight hundred i've not seen too many sales twenty seventeen twenty eighteen they did these stained glass this is obviously like a rookie for saquon but you know all these there's a pocket of collectors mostly comes from the brady influence that they have really like grabbed a hold of these cards on the brady from the brady perspective and like shared like these are the most beautiful looking cards and i haven't seen a sale in a while of one i saw this saquon go off the board and it's it's a very pretty football card yeah these are awesome the stained glass the gold mojos from these years are awesome cards too the black yeah you rarely see these i feel like a josh allen sold kind of recently in the last year or two maybe it was a gold i can't remember but awesome looking card okay we move over to this card i thought just absolutely was a stunner the two thousand nine topps chrome chicle superfractor of calvin johnson superfractor one zero one and a bgs nine five sold for twelve thousand six hundred dollars this is like i feel like if you're walking into the basement of a calvin johnson super collector and you look at the walls like this is like a painting that is like on on the wall like that's how cool it is it like looks like a piece of art yeah you're not gonna find many in my opinion better looking portraits of a player than this one and obviously taking influence from the chicle sets of old yeah awesome photo with the lions seventy fifth anniversary patch too i always like when the player has some sort of patch like that that can easily identify like oh what season this was time and place type thing very cool this one i was didn't see this listed in in my scanning saw the sold this is the twenty fourteen totally certified football green platinum mirror of drew brees this is the one of one the good one of one there are two one of ones one is the non glowy shiny and the other is the and this is the good one which is the green mhmm five thousand three hundred and eleven dollars just chilling raw there's a big kinda cult following around this set because the cards are so unique they have etching they glow they're they're fun cards but this is a this is breeze's best card in the in the product and it just went off the board not even in a holder just raw yeah that's a sweet card those are i would love i need a color of these one day awesome looking cards i feel like i wonder because in this listing there's no like platinum mirror there isn't and in and in the scan itself you cannot see any etching so unless you know i'm sure those who knew were just like i hope no one else sees this yeah i wonder if this flew a little under the radar versus presentation matters pictures matter all that stuff is is real so yeah this i feel like one for a deal it did final card is i had to pull this up because we were talking about bowman chrome and there was a big one that is very nostalgic to me the twenty thirteen bowman chrome super fracture rookie otto one of one of manti teo one of the greatest notre dame football players of my lifetime we don't need to talk about what happened on the other side we we this is not this is not conspiracy gossip theory this is a football card podcast but this is interesting because this is his rookie card in a notre dame jersey in bowman chrome but they're not separated this is like how it used to be so we're like now we're like combining them again but i don't know like this is another card i didn't see but like if i would've seen this card i'm i probably wouldn't have offered thirty two fifty but this is a card i would certainly want so sick card love the autograph just it's a banger this is a card you couldn't see i feel like that's that's up for some other people jokes there are we won't get into all that but when that happened that was just like an all time where were you moment like when that dead spin article dropped yeah and the whole like twitter was in its infancy like the it was a good twitter of yeah this was like one of that was one of those moments that went like viral in like the early days of what viral really meant via social media and the internet and blogs and all that so that was just absolute insanity when that was unfolding with like where notre dame was and how he was playing at the time just a crazy story which yeah i it it i think what frustrated me the most about the story is because i have cheered and watched notre dame football my entire life and at the time which maybe the last year with jeremiah love would be in the conversation probably not it would probably still be the teo season like defensively to have a player be in the heisman conversation is very challenging but he was like like everyone like has these like superlatives like heart and soul of the team like this player does something and it changes everything like dude it was like week after week after week it's like what's theo gonna do this week and he was literally the heartbeat of that team and it was so fun and i just remember like you know they they they got the beat the the break speed off of them that year in the national championship but they made it there but yeah i just remember like the thing that you know these these stories happen and it's this is the day that the internet the dawn of the internet and people are gonna do what they do but i just remember like i'm like so frustrated that like that is kind of the legacy when he's had like literally the best season i've ever watched as an notre dame player and there's there's like a documentary on netflix around this and they interview him and it's if you ever wanna get back into it it's it's worth watching it because you can maybe understand at some level how this happened i know we see these things as like this had never happened to me but like at least it gives a firsthand account from theo about this but anyways i saw this card and i was like man that card is sick what the thirteen bowman chrome design it's just it this is nasty card so yeah this is awesome and yeah there's nothing better than when a player like that it like when someone's on heisman watch or just mvp watch where some players has everyone captive of like what are they gonna do next and then you watch the game and he's getting fourteen tackles and a sack and like a pit it's like oh my god like they're just in the zone unstoppable right now so yeah that it's kinda how manziel was although manziel was the quarterback but like everyone was watching manziel every week because he just kept wanting upping himself and it was this similar way but defensive side of the ball with manti te'a a hundred percent that's a great comp it was like i all of a sudden i know i know when texas a and m is playing yeah like as i totally i never cared about texas a and m a day in my life but during that era it was like appointment viewing had to watch it there hasn't been jeremiah smith is kinda becoming that he's pretty damn good he's pretty awesome man just like i've like i was checking in on that like this season so far i've just been like wait what's he doing this week oh two hundred yards four he has i know there's a lot of quarterback very strong group of quarterbacks in the draft if jeremiah smith doesn't go number one i'm just gonna be like what are you doing like look at this guy look at him so yeah and as much as it pains me to say as ohio state players you can't deny greatness and he is certainly a great football player yeah he's definitely he's the top like i'm i check-in on college football but it's by no means like my you know i'm not a college football fan the way some of the other collectors are and like arch manning was that for a second i was like alright i gotta see what arch is doing but i feel like he's little manufactured in my opinion he's fallen off and so yeah there's no one else really in college football right now that has the juice i think that jeremiah smith does he's got the juice alright good stuff good sales collecting updates what are the current collecting projects you're focusing your resources on having to say no to a lot of cool cards that are popping up i'm just like nope i not this isn't it right now so i'm holding out man i'm i'm i'm in my i'm forming kinda how i wanna tackle this and i go a lot of different ways like i'll be like maybe i this is the year i buy a josh allen card i'm like they're so expensive right now and you know what if josh allen tears his knee tomorrow then i'll be upset about that so i'm just kinda i'm kind of i'm trying to figure out i mean i had the jack doyle purchase i'm just trying to be methodical yeah i was in the same same camp where i was just like selling some stuff you know building reserves trying to think about what the next move is then i had a card pop up the other day that i had to i had to pivot from so i'll i'll talk about that at a later date but nothing nothing to share right now when when this does take place when you're willing to share share i know we talked a little about it but i think we we should dedicate some time upfront because i feel like there'll be a lot of lessons decisions to go to get inside your head of what you went through as you're navigating all of this so i think think we should reserve that whenever the time comes mhmm it's always it's always a fun process i feel like i was asking for this too when you were going through your consolidation where i was like oh yeah i need a shake up and i feel like that kind of already started me selling stuff and then it's like oh here you go here's a card that you is at the top of all your list so we'll see how that goes alright card call out got an idea what do you got do you have an idea don't have an idea why don't we just do the freaks man we'll just like if you have a physical freaks at their position we talked about you know we had the nicknames going on just like let's see some freaks like what whether they're linemen running backs receivers quarterback whatever they are yep they're just they just jump off the page at you we wanna see their football cards physical freaks bonus points if you include a testament to their freakiness whether it's like a oh they ran a they're this big and ran this forty or this game where they had this many yards like take some time to to throw in some stats if you want to you know justify the freak pick we wanna see that we always wanna see that we always
