The Football Card Podcast #67: Football Cards Go Beyond Quarterback Prospecting

hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pack nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking slabs himself brett how are you doing i'm well i enjoy the fact that this is a off location recording for you these hotel recordings have become a fixture in football card podcast folklore it it really professionalizes the podcast i think because i'm envisioning like you're out on the road like hitting the beat trying to understand the true stories behind football cards and most importantly football cards so i hope you got your coffee nice and hot i'm excited for this episode it's a lot on my mind my team won this week that's a victory it might not have been the prettiest win but a win is a win in the national football league and a fun fact that my friend who i go to the games with sent me last night he just sent me a clip of with no context just sent me a clip of the spencer schroeder game winning field goal which was awesome shout out spencer schroeder i'm gonna start printing the spencer schroeder for mvp t shirts and maybe i'll get three people to buy them but after he sinks the field goal on the telecast they pan into the crowd and they shoot section one ten and you will find yours truly and me and my friends celebrating after that so fun to be a part of the moment shout out cbs for allowing me into many homes all over the country who enjoyed the kick as much as me so yeah it was like a two two seconds maybe just boom there there there i am celebrating in a great moment so that was was awesome that's awesome send me that clip what do you think got you into more homes being on national tv or the football card podcast football card podcast yeah one hundred percent we we are the fastest growing and the ratings providers i'm supposed to get a report today we're topping you know the caleb hammer financial audit we're we're we're getting up there with joe rogan and some of the biggest podcasters in this whole universe so we're here for you but you know it's nice to get some recognition so the the national appearance was was fine but yeah nothing beats what we do here each and every week absolutely and yeah on the road for episode sixty seven so shout out shout out me for being up early west coast time to record this coffee machine working in this hotel room i'm happy to report it is a keurig but it's dip they're all different it's something i'm realizing every single keurig in a hotel room is different which i'm picturing that factory just cranking out one of a kind keurigs over and over it just slipped alright we gotta change change how you put the water in on this one change this so if you're a if you're a one zero one collector which we've discussed you know many times start collecting hotel keurigs that's a new lane of one of a kind items for you to pick up is do you have the one with the the the i'll tell you the worst ones is the like you rip open the the pack and it's like this plastic like shelf with the coffee that you like shove into it and it takes like fifteen minutes to get warm and then it spews out shitty coffee is it that one or is it like actually branded keurig it's a branded keurig but your description isn't isn't wrong for how the okay how it works and how it's created i'm i'm looking now too because it you know you get the individually wrapped cups i kinda wanna do like a pack opening parody video of like ripping open like a cup figuring it out but yeah i'm i'm just happy it works i feel like the last couple had not worked and there was one where the coffee place wasn't even open by the time we were recording so happy that i've got coffee in my hand you know what i'm surprised about i'm surprised that they didn't see your name in check-in maybe you needed to display maybe pack nicholson as an alternate name and that they don't have a barista up in your room right now making you whatever you want knowing that you are podcasting right from their location it just seems like they should be taking care of you yeah that's kinda disrespectful i will i'll leave some notes some complaints for them how are you feeling after monday night football what a game what a win i'm feeling great it's a week to week league the roller coaster of how down i was after week two to watching just an ass kicking on monday night football a ben johnson master class dennis allen master class i mean just defense looked good defense was flying around very happy excite like optimistic now went from at one point during after caleb went down thinking alright let's lose out so we can get a top draft pick to now i'm back on like let's go win a super bowl this year so yeah i'm happy shout out case keenum what a game what a story and yeah just now focus on next week get ready for the jets get ready for the jets you know what i'm curious about i'm curious since both of our teams won this week when the last time we have recorded and this has taken place the last time the colts won prior to this was when they beat the falcons in berlin so if the bears won that week then it would have been that week i feel like they did that that was let's see let's see colts falcons twenty twenty five was november ninth november ninth twenty twenty five bears game bears beat the giants there we go alright so not since november ninth almost a full calendar year where we're having to make you know balance one of us being happy and one of us being dejected that was a great colts win jonathan taylor went ham i remember that game yes that was a good time if i knew it was gonna be the last time i probably would have enjoyed it that much more but i will say this for all of you fans out there who have haven't won in a while or are sad no matter what happened previously when you are watching your team win on a sunday especially when you're there and you get a walk out on top man it's just you just have to celebrate and be happy in the moment and i didn't see anything necessarily from that game where i was like you know what like the colts are gonna blaze this path but i didn't need that i just needed to go to a game hang out with some friends and watch the colts win and that's what happened so spirits are gonna be high delivering episode six seven we had to do it once but i'm excited man and now colts in london next week speaking of which i have parlayed this into a very strategic weekend so my buddy who i go to the colts games with his family has a lake house and so he has invited me and my wife his wife were gonna go saturday have a no kids hang out saturday wake up and watch the game at a lake house uninterrupted and then afterwards hopefully after a victory go pick up the kids so very excited about the planning that the best thing if you don't have a lake house having a good friend with a lake house is top option so good job there they can beat the commanders and then all of a sudden just get that w then we're sitting at two and two it's crazy how just one like we keep saying it's a week to week league but truly just one win makes all the difference look at the the falcons going from worst team in the nfl they have a big game against the packers and it's like oh did they figure it out is this how it could they have all these pieces did they figure it out i hope they figured it out so and the same thing with pack packers packers look like they're falling apart but they'll just could rattle off a win and then things just turn right back around so big momentum big momentum swings all around you mentioned the commanders and obviously i'd be remiss to not recognize them for being the defending super bowl champs i would love to see if anyone maybe in our pick them league actually had the commanders with that victory but what i'm really looking at is i'm looking at the box prices of twenty fifteen prism and how if they're to the moon now that marcus mariota has resurrected himself who's who's out there hunting for those mariota color rookie cards in prism i bet you there's a lot of people out there that's a that's a good call i have a couple boxes of fifteen prism that i've been itching to rip maybe this is a reason to do a football card pod mariota hunt potentially let's see i'm looking for at week three picks because shout out to pick'em league you gotta you gotta put yourself over out of the gates tell everyone what you did well if you go to week three so here so first off the standings if you go to full season it still shows two weeks total because currently we just are dropping your lowest score and currently black hat cards is still in sole possession of first place at twenty four and seven followed by a two way tie at twenty three and eight and then a few people down there at twenty two and ten but shout out black hack black hat cards for sole possession of first place but if you go to weekly and look at week three you will see that pat nicholson finished first in week three going eleven and five so we had a good week three to kind of crawl out of the basement in the overall standings tied for second mister stacking slabs at ten and six along with a few other people we'll shout out steve's pc raider nation nick's basketball pc i'm not sure why you're in the football card pod pick them nick but to each his own lucas call me pills middie's cards and dak mac fan all there at ten and six last week i'm also then going to picks by week where i can go to week three and see everyone's picks and i'm looking to see if anyone picked the commanders over the seahawks and it's a clean sweep seahawks you're kidding me the whole week holy wow seattle the other big like falcons packers there's one two i think three people picked the falcons so that's had given had given no reasons to pick them up until that point absolutely not so that was those were the two a lot of red on those two games but shout out to pick'em league shout out to everyone participating get your picks in reminder you can you have now until before the games to get your picks in and yeah if you look at the standings and are wondering why there's only two weeks of total points it's because we're dropping that lowest scoring week currently so but from here on out no free gifts you just gotta get your picks in and keep it going alright episode sixty seven sixty seven weeks straight it's pretty incredible shout out us shout out everyone for listening we got some opening topics wait or you have an opening topic what should we what should we talk about yeah i wanna talk about a topic that spans both football and spans football cards and it is as i'm sitting here i'm looking and i was like i might as well bring this up got the latest psa mag and number ten of the new england patriots drake may is on the cover and i am not sure i was wracking my brain over this usually you see the players continue to take a step forward that are like on this trajectory of superstardom especially making it all the way to the super bowl and it feels like we're seeing a unique case study with drake may taking several steps backwards so just for the audience you know he was in the mvp conversation last year four thousand three hundred and ninety four yards thirty one touchdowns eight interceptions seventy two percent completion percentage john your favorite thing to track for quarterbacks and a one thirteen point five passer rating this year obviously we played three games but five hundred and eighty five yards dipped down to sixty three point eight percent one touchdown six interceptions fifty eight point seven passer rating drake may has not been very good you had the blood slip allegedly when he was trying to make a pass that was kind of odd it just it's not he does not look like himself he looks like a whole different player obviously it's not over this could be a small bump in the road but it's not a small bump in the road when people are spending a whole hell of a lot of money on his cards so he has had three six figure sales i was looking at five figure sales dude it just i it kept i kept it kept scrolling his latest card that sold of six figures happened september nineteenth a hundred and thirty four thousand two hundred dollars and it was his patch at fl shield one of one no autograph so somebody put up six figures for this card probably i'm guessing an unused patch but yeah man drake may not looking good for the pats for him or for investors what do you say yeah i can't remember seeing a player turn into a pumpkin like this fast like it he looks like a completely different quarterback out there he was so good last year during the regular season i mean he set or i don't know if he set records but yeah he was just that was the whole thing seventy two percent completion like wow he's so good he's so good and all the touchdowns and they were winning but the playoffs were kinda rocky for him and then i think it's in the last seven games or something like that or starting from the playoffs last year he has like several fumbles several interceptions just can't seem to figure it out some of those interceptions are just mind boggling like based based on the player we're watching last year or how confident he was and decisive and like he could read a field to now he's throwing just some really bad interceptions or he's just dropping the football completely so i don't know it's like weird how shades of mac jones it is where mac jones had that great year it was a pro bowl he had donriss base cards selling for thousands of dollars i don't know if drake may is gonna be i think drake may will be fine i'm he's a good quarterback he's proven that i guess over last year but yeah right now it's looking rough and right now it is just that reminder of these quarterback prospecting is a gigantic gamble like those cards buying some of these cards even for like again caleb williams i'm guilty i bought caleb williams cards and i'm like yeah this will go down probably like i i'm probably buying this at a at a peak but i don't know i i mean it's it's a good just like warning to heed investing in these young guys so the quarterback prospecting of of it all has really like when you look season over season it has really become one of those things that it's like playing with dynamite i mean it hit i mean it has been there hasn't been a ton of like big hits over the years i mean i think about a guy and maybe we'll we'll play a little bit to someone who collects him and forty niners fans since we always celebrate the the niners here but like i think about a guy like brock purdy and it's like he's he's never really had obviously mister irrelevant but he's never really had i mean he's been hurt but he hasn't had these like down down moments but no one really cares about brock purdy and brock purdy cards he but he's just been steadily consistent i think he's leading the league in qbr right now but it's interesting it's like these players we've mentioned you know sam darnold on here before it's like there's these players that the hobby just decides we don't want anything to do with but they're like pretty good players they might not reach like all time territory with all time grades but instead like the hobby decides to get distracted and place bets on a bunch of these guys and are willing to pay an absurd amount of money and most times these guys don't end up panning out so i don't know man i the last dallas show the narrative everyone was talking about because it was spun up by influencer nation was just like yeah i'm at the dallas show right before football season and no one's buying football cards i'm just like why is everyone got a shit on football cards and what a terrible like statement to make like you're there but like no one is like selling this like i don't i don't know i i i wasn't there so i can't really combat that but it just seems like because rookie prospecting has sucked we all of a sudden wanna take this angle of saying nobody's buying or dealing in football cards which i think is the biggest bunch of baloney there is so yeah drake may doesn't help our case i guess football card collectors but here here we are so yeah i mean i'm it's a storyline that's developing in the nfl and i will tell you when the patriots are on i will be watching to see if he is going to turn the corner or if it continues to look like a train wreck i'll tell you this also vrabel didn't do him or his team any favors by being a individual that isn't necessarily holding himself accountable and willing to go out at lengths to conceal extramarital affairs so and bringing puppies into press conferences to gain sympathy so if you are investing in drake may blame mike vrabel wait what's this puppy thing oh you dude what he did what he had is like first press conference like in front of the media at the beginning of the year he brought his puppy into the room to like as like a distraction mechanism yeah was this after the yes yes diana stuff okay wow very bold to get out of here i mean puppies are internet gold and you can't just bring that in as a prop for your philandering yeah i'm so glad that the bears got ben johnson not mike vrabel i remember at the at the time if you had asked me who i would have wanted i wanted mike vrabel leader of men to come in and just shape up the bears locker room and not the unproven offensive wiz kid but now i there's no coach i would trade ben johnson for so i'm happy that they made that call good job ryan puls are you when are you gonna get your ben johnson tattoo i don't know but i need a ben johnson black finite they had they made coaching cards in prism twenty twenty four or twenty five because i've seen the matt le flore finite out there and the andy reid finite out there but give me a ben johnson card i will buy it this is what i'm i'm i've proposed this i think on the history of the football card podcast but i am a buyer of a a a deep coach set you got coordinators in it and also the front office like i'm a buyer of that like carly ursay gordon on the sideline with the headset dressed to the nines like like sign me up that is a card i want i want that a lot more than most anything else so maybe topps fanatics more creative ideas we've got a podcast here that is the number one podcast not only in football cards and football cards but in the world like if you want people to buy your product we're giving you free ideas and we'll support it so give us the coaching give us the gm front office set give us all the rare and scarce parallels give me the super factors like give me it all that's what i want yes and like including all the lame duck coaches like every it is a complete history i'm just picturing a breaker opening up a pack and it's oh we got we got a bears it's a head coach bears head coach sweating it out oh it's eberflus oh just hoping for the ben johnson getting an eberflus would be devastating who who is speaking of which we can move on but who is the lamest duck head coach right now in the nfl oh todd bowles man todd bowles is not doing himself any favors right there the urge to say matt lafleur i he's up there packers have packers fans have completely turned heel on matt lafleur i think so ben johnson broke them let's see i don't even know off the top of my head who's i i wanna say dan quinn but they had that big win sol yeah sola's not looking good i mean the titan got there though yeah titan situation's looking tough it's gotta be todd bowles dude todd bowles yeah which i like i like the bucks i wish the bucks were good the bucks are fun i like baker i like baker but he's hurt so it's just not looking good in tampa no not at all sirianni too there's he's i feel like he's falling out of favor everyone will turn their back on sirianni and then like he'll lose the next game and then he'll win like ten and they'll be they'll be like trying to get the nfc championship game that's how they roll hundred percent alright sixty seven a couple other shout outs football card pod in the wild you all delivered this week with pictures of you listening to the football card pod in public settings we love to see it shout out five zero four person sent a picture of himself listening to the football card podcast at the florida state football game so college football card podcast but football card podcast nonetheless ajm cards shared him listening to football card podcast during a race i think he was running five k or something like that forgive me if i'm wrong on the distance correct me i'll just say it's a marathon actually running a marathon listening to the football card pod we love i love the thought of being the soundtrack of people running a marathon and it's this in your ear that just seems like terrible audio to motivate you to run faster but whatever if if that's the distraction you need hell yeah keep listening to the football card pod niners and badgers had the fcp on during a forty niners game and the the low and behold the forty niners are three and o so that magic continues to work if you if you listen to the football card pod at a football game your team will win sports card struggles was listening to football card pod while they were at a gymnastics meet i assume it was for one of their kids maybe or they were just at gymnastics meet not sure the context but nonetheless listening to the football card pod there and jason's sports cards had the football card pod on during a high school soccer game which we'd love to see it that those are my favorite posts ten thousand twenty thousand points for everybody who sending pics of them listening to the football car pod in different places shout out sports card struggles like that is the one i relate to the most yeah i've just as a dad you know going to like dance dances and those events there's all this stuff that i'm not like my kid's not in and you have to wait for the kid and so it's like put on let me listen to some guys talk about sports cards and then when my kid gets up and performs then i'll pause it but i just i absolutely love that one so shout out dad shout out kate skeneham dad such a dad that that that those moments baseball card podcast but verlander and his daughter i mean maybe it's because you know girl dads unite it's like when you see stuff like that it's like it tugs at your heartstrings a little bit absolutely now i'm just thinking of the when your kid's like doing gymnastics and there's the little like bullpen off to the side where all the parents sit how do we sponsor that bullpen like this is the official the football card pod bullpen football card pod is the official sponsor of the parent bullpen at gymnastics facilities everywhere we get some signage around there i tell you how we do it is we bring in a barista to get the coffees going for them and get the pod going and they'll be set so mhmm look out gyms everywhere the football card podcast is here to support all of you sitting there we got the soundtrack we're bringing the coffee let's go alright episode sixty seven there's only one player who's ever worn sixty seven to make it to the hall of fame and that is les richter so let me tell you a little about les richter he was a linebacker for the los angeles rams from nineteen fifty four to sixty two four time first team all pro three time second team all pro eight time pro bowler just kind of during his nine years with the rams he did not miss a game playing through various injuries he kinda did it all he scored a touchdown he kicked extra points he kicked field goals on defense he intercepted sixteen passes and the one note that jumped out to me about les richter is a trade that he was part of so when he was drafted let's see he was a first round draft choice of nfl's new york yanks the second overall pick in the nineteen fifty two draft the yanks folded before the fifty two season and the dallas texans assumed the rights to richter they then traded him to the los angeles rams for eleven players the second largest deal ever made for a single player which when i first read that i thought it was the largest the fact that it's the second largest i i don't really care i wanna know what the largest trade is but an eleven player trade is pretty sick that you're worth that much but also maybe a reason the dallas texas folded if they're making these kinds of trades for getting eleven random nudes for a hall of famer but les richter hall of famer shout out him shout out les richter i went with a guy that dude i love landing on guys that when i was opening up packs of cards as a kid i remember pulling and certainly this was one of them russell maryland of the dallas cowboys three time super bowl champion a ultimate jimmy johnson guy playing for jimmy johnson at the u and then dallas selecting him first overall jimmy johnson knew what he liked he knew he needed that piece on the defensive line to anchor it nickname because of his quick feet the dancing bear so what a what a great nickname and his son yeah yeah i've nicknamed yeah his son rj maryland plays tight end for the packers so it runs in the family you know defensive lineman in the nineties not a lot of cool cards but i mean come on well ninety four finest refractor russell maryland it's such a great action shot oh yeah he is literally like trying to do a swim move or a rip move to get to that quarterback so shout out russell maryland hell yeah and something i was thinking we shout out the hall of famers you always have a good favorite i needed to get back into the pro football reference av ranking because i'm like who's who's number one for sixty seven because also yes hall of famers are great but also the football card pod we need to we like giving you know paying the dues to the or giving flowers to the like non hall of famers like who needs to get in the hall who can we use our platform to campaign and champion to get into the hall of fame and number one in av for sixty seven is a player by the name of bob kukenberg kuekenberg kuekenberg which his av is a hundred and sixteen so he is the highest he's way up there and i was looking at bob's wikipedia page and there's a couple of things that say now first off he was on the dolphins for fourteen seasons between seventy and eighty three so he's part of that undefeated super bowl team he's a he was a nash so he's a two time super bowl champion two time first team all pro a second team all pro six time pro bowler national champion at notre dame you're fighting irish on the nineteen sixty six national championship team winner he goes to the dolphins where he plays offensive tackle and defensive tackle so he's going both ways we love when a big ugly is going both ways he grew up he was born in gary indiana and then grew up in hobart indiana so the brickies the home of the brickies the home home of the brickies and i just like this quote where he said kuchenberg called his father the toughest man he ever knew and said his father had occupations such as an ironworker boxer rodeo clown and human cannonball which i'm like is is his father homer simpson because these are all simpson's plot points so he goes on he has tons of injuries his he described his head as a weapon which i'm gonna play spoiler led to some c cte down the road and he's no longer with us but yeah he just kind of was a a bruiser down there he had a good quote about he said talking on sacrifice and strategy for success against opposing defensive tackles and his quote is i just fight him as long as he's beating on my head and not the quarterback it's alright with me so what a guy what a card yeah we have his nineteen seventy three tops psa ten pulled up just yeah dolphins legend i'm sure some people have cards of bob kukenberg out there sorry if i'm getting that name wrong but send send us your cards we'll share them dude he he this photo man he looks just like hulk hogan in the face he does he looks like a young terry malleo like wow well seventy three tops too as i said i'm just not very familiar with but the simplicity and the something about the dude these shots he's just like there's like he just like took off his helmet like grabbing some water after practice like hey bob we gotta gotta take your top seventy three photo can can you can you smile and he just stares down the barrel of the camera he's got he's got some sunburn on his arms so what a great photo yeah wants nothing to do with anything besides beating someone else's head just taking him away from what he loves so shout out sixty sevens out there as always send a card of any player wearing sixty seven we will share it should we get into some questions let's get into some questions alright first up from drake's pc 'as collectors we love to share why we add cards to our collection however when it comes time to sell we rarely share why we are selling a card or cards while we don't necessarily owe anyone an explanation when we do sell do you think there's value for other collectors in sharing why we're selling or why a particular card or cards were selected over others for what it's worth brett typically does a great job doing this in his content but what he does is the exception rather than the norm it's funny that i was reading this question and the first thing as i was reading drake's question that came into my mind was like i hate talking about cards that i'm selling but then drake recognizes me for talking about it i think i only talk about it when i do it to illustrate the point of a new purchase in my content i sell cards all the time that i don't like to talk about because typically like that is a chapter i'm closing they're cards that i love or like and just don't really wanna dig into it so i don't know the benefit really to the community if i spend time explaining why i'm selling cards like to me it's it's almost it feels like almost too too much tmi but because i don't know it's just they're like i'm a rearview mirror guy like once it's gone i just kinda put in the rearview mirror unless there's a big car that i have that i need to explain myself a little bit so i do think like i'm very very big on this i don't think you owe an explanation to anyone about anything you're selling and if people are pressing you or asking you like you don't need to respond to them like i you don't owe you don't owe anybody anything but yeah it's an interesting topic it is not something i personally necessarily like to talk about too much but what what's your point of view yeah i'm always yeah promoting cards you're selling is like a not a fine line but there's just like things to consider i guess mhmm i don't always share every card i'm selling so i'm like i've got i've sold cards recently that i'm i i feel like after talking to you about this where i asked like do you do you share when you're selling cards all the time and you're like i just put them in the box and and let it go because i i was asking like how many times you could post about it on instagram like what is what is the number and i think i like to just be like i'm selling cards to buy cards because that's normally the case and like i'll post links out to the cards because of course we want our auctions to do well when we're selling cards we want them to do well i know the audience i have that they're interested in football cards that's a self serving purpose like people can disguise that as like i'm hoping to get this in the hands of the right collector it's like no you're posting the card because you want it to sell for more money so you have to buy more cards like that's just full stop why we're doing it but i think then there's the if you're selling a card and you do the lengthy like explanation of why this card is so great that never lands for me backfires why are you selling it then like if if you have to spend even if it's for a better card i don't know that just never seems disingenuous yes yeah and it's like trying too hard to sell the card is where it sometimes doesn't land it's like are you giving information that this card is available and then i can do my own research or are you like trying to influence me into like buying a card by pushing all that down my throat so mhmm i i think it's always a balance and then i think there are situations where if you're a public figure or just vocal person in the hobby and you have a card that you love and you like bought it and you posted all about it and then you sell it a month later that's where like that'll rub people the wrong way you know so i i think it's a case by case situation but it definitely selling cards in this hobby is always for whatever reason can be touchy because people have their they they have strong opinions about like you should just be buying cards just to collect them and never sell cards and so yeah i don't know i i i i mean i i'm very very public and transparent it's the nature of the work i do and i have to do that in order to authentically tell stories of what i'm thinking about and what's on my mind and it's a nature of the beast but because of that there's oftentimes where individuals that i don't know like press me for reasons why i'm doing certain things and that's where i just like put up a brick wall yeah it's like this is none of your business i don't know you like i'm not here to talk or debate about what i am doing because like the reality is for all of us we all have very interesting and unique situations with our professional lives with our personal lives with our hobby lives money is a part of all of that and the reasons why we're doing certain things a lot of times are deeply personal and we don't need to explain to anyone else the personal matters that we're dealing with in order to maybe get some cash to pay for something or to fund something or to save it for something like we don't need to do that like the it is it is our business like hobby instagram is great the community and the conversation is great but there is some things that are just left need to be left to be private i believe that i also i trust in my own self that i've got a process in terms of platforms card selling of i know what's out there i know what's available i know what's interesting to me and if i miss something i've got some great friends and they'll share those cards with me the last thing i need is someone over positioning a card and telling me how great it is because i know they're gonna benefit from selling it it's like the chances are i saw it up for auction already and i don't think it's that cool or that cool for me and by you posting about it and talking about it it makes me not like the card even more so i'm not saying it does more harm than good but i i there's never been one type in the history of my collecting that i've seen someone post a card that they're selling up for auction that they're talking about it that i've said oh my god that card's available and let me read paragraph three there's it's a pop three in that grade you know what time to put it in a chubby bid never happened that's me but it's never happened yeah that's so true that like the more you see something the less it the less impact it can have for certain cards and yeah like i i'll find it if it's a card i'm interested in i'm trust that i'm going to find it and i it's not because of getting posted on an instagram story but i also understand i've been there where you have cards auctioning and it's like the day before they end and they're sitting lower than you want and you're like they're always sitting lower than we do always and you're like not enough people know about these i didn't promote them like i gotta do something like you know i understand that anxiety that can come with auctioning a card so totally understand if people share cards that are for sale like that that's normal i think it's just all about yeah don't i i don't need the long explanations of why it's the most amazing card ever because then it's like why are you selling it that's that's the first question that comes in my mind final note for me on this and i'll tell you one thing that can be detrimental to the sales and the proceeds from your sports cards i see this all the time and i'm just gonna say this is something that needs to stop what needs to stop is someone who's got a batch of cards and they list these cards for an extraordinary price here's the list price make me an offer and they run them over and over and over and so we see these cards with these prices and it just like don't i i'm done i don't need to see these cards again and then you know a month later those cards are available at auction it's just like you have you have i feel in my opinion you have just destroyed all the potential value in that because in it with cards like we don't wanna see we don't wanna see them over and over again the best part about cards and great cards is not seeing them until they are listed on the auction block and then you get people excited and it's very it's it's psychological and maybe it's just a me thing but if i'm seeing the same card over and over again at a price that i don't agree with and then it's up for auction i'm just like man that card's probably not doing as good as that individual thinks it is in this auction because i'm tired of it right because it also means that all these people saw the card and didn't wanna buy it so now that like that means everyone had the opportunity to buy this card and didn't and so now that it's up for auction it doesn't feel as special it's like a large amount of people already passed on this card at a certain price so there's already a ceiling kind of built in for this card and yeah it's like you people like the cards that you have to hunt to get and make the deal offline and not mhmm not public so when there's a card that's just been you know it's not even the flippers vortex it's more of like when it's in like ig story sale purgatory yes that's a good yes sitting up there over and over it it loses a little luster so it's like don't post it on your story for a while let people forget about it then send it to auction maybe it's the it's the move yeah if you are going to run the card at auction keep it away from the internet for as long as possible the moment of all moments in sports cards is the individual going to the auction sites checking the listings and digging into the weeklies and then seeing the card and be like oh my god like that moment really matters because we favored it then we'd go check back in on it and it it just makes us want it more like so if you're gonna sell cards at auction which i am pro auction one thing i never do is i never list the cards for sale beforehand because it's it'll always end in a walk of shame if you do it yep next up from hey baker what are your thoughts on using a budget grading company to get cards slabbed strictly for pc with no intention to sell is it ever worth it the grade is nice but i personally don't really care i just want certain cards preserved not a move i would make but that that doesn't mean it's a move that you can't make i tend to i'm i'm i'm a simpleton man i i just most of my cards are in bgs or psa holders all of them are essentially and i really only grade my cards with psa because that is what i'm used to they command the most value and so i don't even look at what else is happening i think for me the fact that psa has the history not only do they have the they have the the premium like a psa ten premium there's an excitement in hoping your card gets that but like it's the history of the pop report that i think really matters so instead of like if i didn't wanna grade a card or i or if my options were grade a card with a lower tier provider or just put it in a one touch i'm just i'm just getting like a sick one touch and putting the card in a one touch i i really like the way cards present in one touches and there's like cards that just isn't isn't worth grading to me that i have that are in one touches so that's my move yeah same i mean based on the question let's see he says if it's strictly for pc with no intention to sell and the grade is nice but i personally don't care then do not spend the money to get it graded by any company like what yeah if if that's true if you don't wanna sell it and you don't care about a grade don't grade it like that the the point of spending money to grade a card is to increase its value is to protect it increase its value and just you know have it just have a more i guess solidified like what this card is like this is a psa ten or bgs nine five whatever it may be but if you just want it to protect it there are great options out there there's i love a one touch i have tons of cards in one touches and then with a nice little plastic cover around the one touch where it's like okay i have tons of cards like that it feels elevated it feels different than just having it you know in a top loader in a box and but there are also cards that maybe i don't wanna spend the money to grade at that moment and so yeah there's there's alternatives out there there's options out there there's an opportunity here for me to promote a a partner of mine and if you're gonna buy onetouch buy it from bcw supplies they don't they they they're not a sponsor of the football card podcast but they are sponsor on the stacking slabs podcast great company great people go buy from bcw supplies yep alright next up from bolt card crew thoughts on if fernando mendoza doesn't play does his debut patch get put in a second year card i like this i like this little wrinkle that we're seeing where the number one overall pick the debut patch is this huge thing and he's not seeing the field because uncle kirk is balling out what what happens with this debut patch and yeah let's hear your thoughts and i have a hypothetical for you yeah so i first of all my first reaction is there's still a a lot of season left captain kirk he's thirty eight years old he's a man he's almost forty if kirk cousins got hurt and was unable to finish the season and they bring in fernando mendoza i don't think or i don't think they would ever go to the like grab second year card type of thing that scenario that they painted i'm assuming in this i don't know the details around this but i'm assuming fernando mendoza wore that patch in his first game even though he didn't play and that patch will be the card because it's already been predetermined that this was his first game that is the patch that will be in the the the card like it's it's already signed sealed and delivered that's i don't i don't i can't confirm that but that's those are my assumptions yeah same but it got me thinking okay if the debut patch to be activated has to like see the field has to see a snap or some minutes would you rather have a let me see how i wanna word this because we're gonna wanna maybe i wanna clip this but would you rather have a debut patch from mendoza's true debut but it's he only hits the field for like one final garbage time drive maybe takes two kneel downs or a shield from his second game where he balls out has three hundred yards three touchdowns qualifying question here on the back of the card with the shield does it commemorate the game do we have a date it does we have a win we have the stats it has everything you want what what does what product is the shield coming out in i guess what are the what are the debut patches in tops are they in tops chrome they're in they're in tops chrome yeah it's in tops chrome same thing same product but one's one's a debut patch from a non consequential game bad stats one's his second game where it's like a legendary game like he goes on monday night football and throws four touchdowns and they have this epic win i'm final qualifying question am i am i getting this for my personal collection or if i am i reselling like am i opening this pack is the scenario like i'm ripping packs or buying into a break and i yeah which would you rather pull and then you can do whatever you want with it and i can do whatever i want with it if i was a mendoza collector i'd take the shield but if i'm i'm not i'm reselling it if i hit it so i'm taking the debut yeah i think that i think the debut will hold more value but i think yeah personally having that specific game is awesome one hundred percent alright next up from chargers pc after watching the case keenum resurrection it had me thinking about how cool it would be if case and i were best friends now to the question if you could pick an nfl best friend current players only who would it be and why i saw your response first and i struggled with coming up with an alternative but i'll let you you cook and then i'll follow yeah that just came to mind first was george kittle or luther burton i love luther burton he's a second year wide out for the chicago bears seems just like a hilarious great guy and then george kittle just seems like a bro just seems like a guy who would be very easy to hang out with he probably listens to the football card pod who knows but yeah kittle i feel like there's josh allen josh allen seems like he'd be fun i don't know but that's all just off of like gut instinct like who do i wanna have a beer with is kind of where my head went i i struggled to pick someone outside of george kittle because he we have the football and the wrestling connection like i just sit in the basement with george kittle and watch like hours of pro wrestling and that's like what i do with my friends so george kittle is definitely at the top of my list other considerations i would make he's been he's becoming a mascot of the show but like kirk cousins like i could i could have a conversation with kirk cousins about everything i like the fact that he's a family man like connecting with family guys is important the other like under the radar one i throw on the list is grover stewart on the colts just because like all these like off season videos are with he's with the team like he's the cook like he's like from the south like he's making wings and brisket and barbecue so like if i'm not hanging out with big grove like you know i'm gonna be fed well so that's very important in terms of friendship as well yep that's a great one alright next up from buy buy baby cards what is it that makes the victory cigar so striking and in his questions andy included a bunch of photos of players like michael jordan joe burrow jalen hurts barry bonds stephen curry smoking cigars after winning championships the smoke the exhale the stillness after the battle why do we want sports cards to capture the act of greatness more than the moment an athlete finally realizes what he's accomplished in a hobby obsessed with achievement and accumulation are we overlooking the images that show what winning actually felt like and maybe revealing something collectors themselves crave the rare moment when there's nothing left to chase and should we start a new collector tradition finally land a card you've been chasing for years spark a victory cigar post the photo and tag the pod every great chase deserves an exhale what a what a crafty paragraph from our friend andy he's always cooking up good questions good thought provoking questions what do you think of your friend if if if that becomes a thing if people start lighting cigars in like selfie i guess you can't really do this yeah you can if the cigar's in your mouth you can hold your card and you can take a selfie if and you tag us if that becomes a thing man this that that'd be a mountaintop moment at the footballcard podcast so please at least one person do that that would be fun i think there'd have to be a limit on it though like one a year you get one cigar card a year absolutely you can't be sparking up all year and just then it would dilute you know what the cigar victory cigar means but yeah maybe it's like a end of the year thing like at the end of the year everyone yeah should sit back admire your collection spark up a cigar you've accomplished a lot you've done a lot of sitting around and clicking buttons looking at cards online and you've you've built something you've achieved something you've made it to the mountain top celebrate that and if you if you if you if it needs to be something that is not tobacco and something else like hey you do you yeah whatever whatever your vice is doesn't even or it doesn't have to be something bad it could be a a juice mix up a nice healthy you know little v eight juice or a a shake something like that a smoothie whatever your victory indulgent choice is you can spark it up drink it up and take a picture send it to us tag us we'll post but the victory cigar absolutely should be a part victory cigar should be an insert set some you know i bet big tobacco would love that but i bet the fda is not a fan of cigar related cards but i mean some of these photos are awesome there are iconic photos of players smoking cigars after a championship a hundred percent that would be an awesome set and then got me thinking about getting that part of a cigar in a car in in a card little rca rookie cigar auto with a with a slice of a cigar in there that could you know maybe there's a market there i like that idea when i read this question the the first comment i made to myself was cigars more of a cigarette guy so i was thinking about lynn dawson ripping a year at halftime at super bowl one in full gear just in full gear just in the locker it's like one of my favorite football photos of all time just intimately staring down the his at his sig just like just ripping it getting ready to play some football that is just such an era like that is such a time and just if his teammates around him willing to just smell like smoke being like you know what like we're out there we're a team like if you wanna smoke some cigs at half you do you lynn yeah i love that that's such a good photo that should be on a card that makes me want a a lynn dawson card yeah back when smoking sections at a restaurant when there's just a little divider yeah between spoken and non spoken it's not doing anything you're just sitting there and cigarette smoke all the time that's that's the world we grew up in yeah we grew up in that world it's nostalgic to us there's there's not a more lethal but nostalgic combination than the fast food restaurant with the smoking section that you're getting the people that were sitting there crushing their their their double double cheeseburgers from wendy's while drinking a coca cola classic and with a large fry and in their other hand while they're eating is there marlboro red like those people probably didn't live long but they i guarantee their life was more enjoyable than mine right now that's for you what i would do to be able to rip a cig in the wendy's sunroom it's the best we need to you're too young you're too young to appreciate it alright thank you for the questions everybody as always send them whenever i will always say though the best time is tuesday because tuesday is football card pod prep day so because sometimes people send me a question like on friday or saturday and be like for next week's pod but that it can get buried then in the instagram dms because i'm doing the story reshares and all that so tuesdays are a great day to send a question mondays too monday tuesday alright nfl check-in we'll fly through this any anything else you wanted to cover on the current nfl season not really yeah no i'm i'm in i'm definitely enjoying football much more this week that my team won so it goes but yeah i have been yeah i've been enjoying watching the story lines that unfold mhmm we had one question from charm city tim about football specifically with roger goodell confirming there will be nfl teams based outside the us at some point do do you think the nfl would have a super bowl played outside the us and how would you feel if they did i feel like it's only a matter of time mhmm i don't think i have a problem with the location being international based the issue i run into is the time i am a professional wrestling fan the promotions that i watch run shows all all over the world and it is very difficult when there is a big show that is on a saturday or sunday and it's not in the us because the time is always weird i'm with my kids so i i can't really watch it live so i have to like put down the internet and then watch it later that night on replay which is fine but i'm just envisioning like an event as big as the super bowl and it's starting at a weird time i think that would be my only hang up yeah agreed they'd have to play it somewhere where it's still prime time in the us which would mean they might be playing a game at like eight am that local international time which would be weird for players so yeah there are some logistics that they'd have to figure out figure out i feel like to start it would be in north america like they would do a mexico city or yeah i don't know but and then teams outside the us that's gonna happen the same thing there'll be some there'll be a canadian team there'll be a mexican team a team in mexico a team in canada european team too will i i just don't know how they'll make it work travel logistics schedule wise like that would suck for players it already sucks like i feel for the jaguars how they always have to like they play half their games don't feel bad for the jaguars i i i will like that's just gotta be brutal the travel so can i ask you a question yeah so my team is playing in london this week and then they turn around and play a road game in pittsburgh the next week how is how is that work yeah that they shouldn't well is it on sunday the game the london games on sunday yes yeah that's brutal no because normally i feel like for a second there anytime they a team played the europe game they'd have a buy the next week like they or at least play at home or at home yeah going on the road after a euro trip that's no fun no but hey if you go get go get wins that's all that matters i'm just trying to be five hundred right now dude yeah one win away what what i was being what i was thinking on the walkout is the difference from an a fan perspective of one and two versus o and three how big of a gap between those two results there is yeah and like looking before the season started like not knowing anything about the teams looking at the colts schedule ravens chiefs texans you would take one and two oh sign me up brother so i i know that texans are now o and three but that's still a good team their defense is insane man defense is insane is insane going you know went toe to toe with the chiefs a mini w there and like i'd maybe that gave confidence too for this texans game like if they had gotten blown out by the chiefs maybe they you know they're like alright season's over but good job colts it's fun win i i i like the colts i like when the colts win dude i i'm i would when i was watching monday night i was like i wasn't expecting a win and then the bears dominated and i was like you know what this will make for a a more enlightening and exciting football card podcast so i am i am maybe adjacently yeah i'm an of my life i'm really like wanting the bears to be successful so we can be happy when we're doing this we're officially announcing the colts bears alliance we're allies here for this season we'll root for one another and of course we root for the raiders as well and there is three and o three and o raiders wow speaking of that clip made it to raider nation on the football card pod instagram raider fans are a little sensitive more sensitive than i thought they hate randy moss there were yeah they hated the fact everyone was like calling out tim brown tim brown i'm like listen to the podcast yeah listen to the pod we we know tim brown's there i just it was tongue in cheek that the two when i said the two greatest receivers of all time are raiders jerry rice and randy moss notable non raiders and but everyone how dare you put randy moss here over tim brown tim brown's not a raider it's like okay raiders fans i thought you were tougher than this but whatever i we still love raider nation over here no disrespect to raider nation not trying to get them on my ass we do but don't make us turn heel on you yeah true true three and o raiders love that alright let's run through some sales and get out of here yes we are running into sales in card ladder shout out card ladder the official data provider of the football card podcast we've got a card i held in my hand at national twenty twenty one maybe the two thousand and six finest tom brady super fracture psa ten selling for three hundred and thirty six thousand dollars one of the most unique super factors you'll see massive sale helpful to be in a psa ten very popular set amongst football card collectors what do you think about this one yeah awesome card how much were three hundred and thirty six thousand yep that's a big sale i feel like it could've gone higher based on what other brady super fractors have done and i feel like finest yeah people love this set i love this set the one knock i have is all the red like i just wish it was all gold super fracture i think that would be a even more striking card but with the patriots colors the red red's not bad so awesome card cool sale and you you get the traditional gold swirlies you still get the gold in there football gold post form uh-huh yeah awesome card alright we move over to mister drake his former card the twenty fourteen prism black finite peyton manning one of one in a bgs ten peyton is going six figures with this sale a hundred and two thousand dollars this is my favorite parallel favorite set of the entire panini era these things are gorgeous in hand massive sale for the twenty fourteen manning finite yeah this card rules it went lower than i thought i thought it was gonna go higher than one zero two which is crazy to say that's a six figures that's a lot of money for a football card but fine nights manning doesn't have many playing days fine nights he won a super bowl with the broncos he set all the records with the broncos so there is you know it's not like a joe montana chiefs card he's he has accomplished things with the broncos so awesome card right we move over to a card that has a story and this is the twenty seventeen national treasures jerry rice colossal shield one of one autograph selling for a hundred and forty four thousand dollars now this card has sold three times i'm gonna read these sales so november twenty two twenty twenty four or excuse me the first sale was february seventeenth twenty twenty three this card sold for thirty four thousand eight hundred dollars then in november of twenty twenty four this card sells for thirty thousand dollars now in september of twenty six this card sells for a hundred and forty four thousand dollars wow so a quick five x in two years thirty thousand to a hundred and forty four thousand yeah what a sale what a card awesome card i mean people love logoman autos they love shield autos when you're seeing what some of these logoman auto sales are doing this this again feels it's hard calling all these like hundred thousand dollar sales i know undervalued or you know whatever but this feels like it based on what i'm seeing in in basketball like i know it's totally different with like it being a debut patch and a rookie but like that cooper flag eight million dollar sale for his debut patch just is is so crazy to me that like i would rather have the jerry rice shield auto plus seven point eight million dollars than the cooper flag card i love that bit that is keep keep going on that because when you say it like that you're right i same with me because like look at foot like drake bay like just how fast it can all change like i would do not wish injuries on anyone but cooper flagg's been in the league a year like one year no one's been no one's more solidified there's few more solidified than jerry rice you know right like it it's just yeah and basketball's different this was funny i had a conversation with a coworker yesterday where he's more of a basketball collector and was asking about football and like we're getting into he's like football just seems so volatile where with like quarterbacks like you know there's and he has a point where more so than basketball in the sense i feel like basketball players just have a longer runway mhmm like it could take a player three or four years to pop off and they're still collectible whereas a quarterback like you only have sixteen games and if you don't do well or seventeen games if you don't do well you could be benched and your career's done whereas a basketball player or rookie you get eighty two games and even if you didn't you know play amazing and your team was bad you still played good like you're still you know gonna be a fixture of that team for a few more years whereas a quarterback even if you play decent but your team knows o and seventeen you're probably getting benched and then you're done so like basketball players have do have like a longer get more grace i guess from a playing time standpoint and a collecting standpoint but quarterbacks just when you break it down to yeah you have seventeen games and if you aren't good in those seventeen games you're pretty much done it's crazy and how over the past six seven years all these quarterback draft classes you know some of these guys are already out of the league and there there hasn't really been a rookie quarterback who's maintained you know since that like twenty seventeen twenty eighteen class like there's no one from i guess like joe burrow in twenty twenty is up there but even that i i don't know just interesting to think about a prospect in basketball versus prospect in football and what the timeline or shelf life is with those players in collecting yeah i one comment for me is like and this is true this is the perception is non football card collectors when they think about football cards they think about volatility and they think about the rookie quarterback prospecting of it all but like this is the this is not the audience of the football card podcast yeah like but but to the outside world and categories because that world is so because that seems so crazy and because it's been so volatile like everyone who doesn't collect football cards just associates that this is what we all do and it's right couldn't be further from the truth a hundred percent yeah alright we got the twenty five topps chrome superfractor josh allen at a bgs eight five selling for seventy eight thousand dollars i'll tell you what this is a damn good looking football card yeah that is sick what so seventy eight thousand what did mahomes sell for was in the twos right wasn't it like two forty or something like that i tell you awesome card we love josh allen over here yeah we do we love josh allen mvp those are three and o no notes on this card this card's sick alright final card shout out big ben twenty twelve finest super fracture ben roethlisberger in a psa ten nine thousand nine hundred dollars a big old sale for a roethlisberger super great looking card as well yes this is awesome i mean say what you want about roethlisberger he's a two time super bowl champion this seems like a great deal almost ten grand for a psa ten super fracture that is superfracting to the very much great scan to the top yeah that looks awesome shout out big ben and shout out the steelers alright collecting updates current collecting projects you're focusing your resources on anything that you've gotten lately brett uh-oh this this came last night and i got busy and was hadn't even opened it so maybe a a quick reveal we've talked about this rivet yes i i've got this is what i use to open my cards i use just i think my dad had this i like somehow acquired it from him but it's just like probably from nineteen like eighty four this like box cutter but we're ripping we're ripping this a little ebay authentication oh is this a full circle moment let let's see here rip it out i by the way this is a move i always make i the whatever it comes in i toss this just i don't like other people's plastics no yeah same there it is there it is jack doyle twenty eighteen finite one of one psa ten what a card a card you called your shot on here on the footballcard pod i did so there we go full circle moment excited to have this one in the finite collection that's awesome out there that is awesome congrats i'm not home i had a couple that i wanted to show but i'll
