importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking slabs himself brett how you doing i am excited to be here i will say i was listening to some music yesterday and it really put me into a mood where i started to overanalyze my fandom with my team and i've been like in this mode right now where i am going back to the early twenty tens and exploring a bunch of bands that i saw that i listen to regularly that people probably aren't even thinking about or might not even know today but just put me back to a specific time and place and one of those bands that i was listening to is a band called the pains at being pure the pains of being pure heart and i was thinking about that and i was like man this band's great and then i was like you know what i this band name really epitomizes how i've always been as a colts fan and i was like over analyzing their band name and it comes from like a children's story but i was thinking about how we're pure at heart at fans as fans and how that like really makes us vulnerable and we just take it all the time and i was like you know what like i'm kinda tired of this i'm kinda tired of just like letting my team kick me in the teeth for nine consecutive weeks it's been a long time since i've seen a w and then so i took that and i was like well what is the band that i feel like right now in this moment and immediately the first band that came to my mind was rage against the machine and so i feel like right now i'm i'm raging against the machine i'm fighting the system i'm tired of the conformity and so it's only week two and i already wanna jump into a mosh pit and defy the system so that's how i'm doing right now in this moment yeah i relate to a lot of that now it's the it's a week to week league and i was thinking about it like i feel like all last year with the bears i was waiting waiting for the bad thing to happen because that's what happens it's like it can't always be good if something bad happens like anytime i get my like raise my expectations to like okay this is a good team like i can i can confidently go into a sunday expecting to win i've never expected to win before especially last year even when they were doing good it was still like i'm not gonna invest into this because i know the second i do something bad is gonna happen and so was still holding back even going into this year i had my hopes up and all that and but i was still level headed then they dropped fifty nine points week one and i finally think i let myself be like alright this team is legit this is sick i think they're gonna win every sunday and it's like the second my brain turned and thought that it's like the football gods were up there they're like got them we got them three points injure caleb have him cry go go go go and so it all just came crumbling down in on one sunday but still optimism still still hope for the rest of the season it's not all over there was a moment i thought the season was over and i was like alright lose this game get a better pick it's a generational draft like i don't wanna win this game but then like because i know how to do that i know how to jump into the the cope cabinet and start looking towards next year and do it like i've i've done it a million times i just didn't think i'd have to do it in week two of this season but turns out at least last report we're recording this on wednesday caleb's week to week so that's good news but the the backlash the discourse all the all the haters and doubters of which there are many have come rushing out to voice their takes on what happened so it's been an annoying week on the internet i'll say that yeah i just i've quit i've quit the internet yeah i i just can't even do it the for me when before we hit record you said something about like you know your team took the chiefs to the overtime and you know that's kind of a victory in and of itself and you know in a previous life i would have been like you know what you're right like i should feel good about this but dude i just can't get over the fact that after laquan treadwell makes the play then fumbles so i go from oh my god to oh my god this game's over to booth review he's down i i just can't get over the decision making when the box is stacked to run taylor two times in a row and then of course they know what's happening on third and then it's fourth down and the the decision from the coach is you know what we haven't stopped patrick mahomes all day so let let's kick a field goal and just watch patrick mahomes drive down the field and kick a field goal and and and win the game i mean it was i was so pissed off and it's like to the point when you when you go on this like losing streak it's like you're and you're the coach you're like if we would've gone for it and daniel jones would've dropped back and just gotten destroyed and we there was turnover on downs like i would've been like okay at least we went for it but to to not even try to win the game it's just an abomination so the defense is an abomination lou anna romo is an abomination it's crazy because it's like i look at the team i'm like there's just so much talent here but they we we we need we need someone who can we need a we need a leader of men we we need one of those guys one of those ceo types to to set the culture but yeah man it sucks like i i've got a lot lot of fun things planned this week tonight as we record this i'm going to aew dynamite i'm like really fired up to go see some wrestling and then i'm going to see notre dame in purdue on saturday and then i'm going to colts texans on sunday and the battle the owen to battle for like the end your season is over that i'm going to witness that that on that list of things i just described is certainly the thing i'm looking forward to the least which is it sucks so that's where i'm at i'm raging against the machine man yeah yeah i wasn't saying that that loss was a victory no loss is a victory but i think going toe to toe with a team like the chiefs there's something there versus getting the brakes beat off you i will admit i didn't even watch the game i was just so did you i've i've been there with football i turned yeah i've been there the bears game ended i didn't it was over for me so i didn't realize how it played out i saw that there was some chatter of like why they kick it but i didn't even i've been numb i didn't even wanna look into it so hearing that explanation of the play by play is yeah that's that's brutal he gotta go for that but we're not here to commiserate we're here to talk about the the the brighter side of the sport that we love and that has a lot to do with the cards so we just had to get it out of our system we're not gonna drag it through this episode nope nope it's you gotta it's in the past look ahead the bear the bear started o and two last year and i remember coming on the show and saying i am choosing to be optimistic i am not gonna let this team ruin my sundays let's have some fun so it it'll all turn around you know colts could go on fifteen and two is still on the table are you ready to have some fun i'm ready to have some fun today let's do it football card pod episode sixty six sixty six weeks in a row shout out us shout out the listeners of the football card pod couple of things to check-in on at the jump first pick them weekly pick them we are two weeks in and have a couple housekeeping notes there number one a lot of people didn't get their picks in before week two which resulted in them going over sixteen because you have to get your picks in before the thursday game starts which is a little aggressive i asked commissioner lane can we do something about this he said yes so moving forward you have until sunday at one pm to get all your picks in i don't know if that's like you have to have the monday night pick in by sunday one pm or if that hangs until monday not exactly sure but at least one pm sunday gives people ample amount of time to get the majority of your picks in and a second thing for all the people who went over last week in week two we are going to at the end of the year everyone's gonna drop their lowest weekly score that way if you missed out on week two that'll get wiped at the end of the season everyone will have their bottom score wiped at the end of the season so it gives you a chance to continue to hopefully participate and make it to the top of the pick'em leaderboard so those are the new rules going into effect this week but from here on out you're on your own get your picks in that's our one we're throwing you one bone here but shout out the pick'em league shout out we have an undisputed number one right now last week there was a three way tie at first but this week black hat cards has taken sole possession of first place sitting at twenty four and seven pretty fantastic record second place there's two teams at twenty three and eight tkie nast and two two sports cards so a little just a one game lead that black hat cards is clinging to after two weeks but pretty impressive start twenty four and seven so far so black hat chad is is certainly becoming a legend around these parts i mean he hit a deer while listening to the football card podcast yeah for any of that and doc documented the fact that he was listening to the pod while he struck a deer he is the top of the leaderboard he is feeling very good about his football team the minnesota vikings which sorry to pour salt in the wounds there john but he's is is anyone living a better life surviving a deer crash while listening to the football card pod leading the league his team hasn't lost he's got a sick collection i mean we're talking about getting the busts ready for the football card podcast hall of fame here at the end of the year and black hat's black hat is making a case for for being inducted so shout out chad yeah life is good for black hat cards just sitting in his super villain tower with his evil collection laughing at us all lording over all of us yeah what a week that that deer crash great football card pod moment not maybe for insurance and all that but i mean it's good content is what i'll say and i gotta also shout out tutu sports cards who is wow that's tutu sports cards is in second place in the pick'em league they shared a picture of them listening to the football card pod at the niners game last week which earned them forty nine thousand points the the largest amount of points ever given out so shout out to two sports cards that's interesting that two you know people who have posted photos of them listening to the football card pod are run into in the pickle league that's and and both their teams haven't lost yet and both their teams haven't lost so there's something something going on if you you know the karma the football gods are watching that if you are engaging you know actively on socials with the football card pod your team's winning i don't know why our teams as host of the football card pod aren't blessed with that but you know it is what it is it is what it is we appreciate everyone obviously sharing where you're listening telling a damn friend doing all those things and if you're trying to get some good mojo before sunday the best way to do that it sounds because there's evidence is take a picture where you're listening to this and post it and there's a high likelihood that your football team will win yep alright got an opening topic for us i see what are you thinking so i love to observe what people are posting on instagram new pickups cards you talk a lot about about about you know when i get on instagram i just i just wanna see cards and i do too like i love seeing everybody's cards and pickups and one individual who's a avid listener and supporter of the football card podcast who has an awesome collection posted a couple cards and i wanna talk about them because they had me thinking of a topic so shout out our good friend andy at buybuybaby cards over the last week he posted two one of ones that he acquired the first one very very significant football card which was the nineteen ninety eight metal universe trell davis gym master one of one time and place man this is when trell davis was just becoming a hall of famer significant set significant card amazing you instantly know when you see it that it's important he also posted another broncos card which is funny because andy is a forty niners fan but he's got this amazing broncos collection that is brewing but it was a nineteen ninety nine upper deck quarterback class john elway quantum gold one of one i saw these two pictures i was like these cards are amazing and it made me think that i think that it seems that there are a lot of collectors moving towards this hunt for one of ones for from specifically nineties cards that might have been overlooked we have talked a lot about the lack of attention and conversation we've had around upper deck football cards for instance what i wanted to bring to the table based on some of these observations is like what do you make of this activity that it's not just andy i'm seeing it you know with a lot of collectors where you are seeing collectors go in and find these amazing football cards one of ones from overlook sets mostly in the nineties and this is during a period that where there wasn't a proliferation of one of ones like it is today where you can look you know a couple years ago at like the select football product and there's like eight base set one of ones so i just think like i wanted to this is something i'm observing i'm seeing a lot of cool cards i didn't even know about a lot of collectors are kind of moving towards hunting for these cards so i wanted to bring that up and just kinda have a chat about it like what do you think about this like what do you think about these cards that are less discovered ending up in collections like andy's and then getting posted on platforms like instagram yeah i think it's it's interesting in the sense that like this is a shift i'm seeing or like and it's a personal shift and it's also probably influenced by the content i consume and like what i see in the feeds but the switch from i remember and i think we've talked about this years ago it felt like if you had to explain a card it wasn't worth buying it was like the old adage and we've talked about that before it seems and we've talked about how that's though more for people who are looking to sell the cards not necessarily collect them but i just feel like there's become more of a shift into wanting to find those cards that require research and knowledge and tracking down this one of one from a set that no one's ever heard of before and like unearthing it bringing it to light via social media as a as a chase as a hunt and i i totally understand like that is fun that is exciting it's very exciting to do the research discover that a one of one exists from a a set that you didn't know about set the safe search set your traps wait for the hunt and then eventually it pops up and you're able to get it and there's all this excitement and like that as a activity in this hobby is i don't i don't even know if it's growing necessarily or you know it's always been there that's what people have always done but it just it definitely just seems to be yeah there's just interest in in one of ones one of ones have become a huge a bigger chase card than before maybe even again i don't know if that's accurate it just seems like it and it also could be because of the echo chamber we live in but i'm seeing that i'm seeing a lot of the like long posts like shout out chris ho she's the master of this of like tracking down a one on one i haven't heard of and then sharing all this information i'm like that's incredible it makes me wanna go find one of those of my guys so yeah that that's where my mind goes is it seems that like if you have to explain a card it's not worth it has kind of been flip flopped into like the more i can explain about this card the better as you were going through that it triggered a thought that i had not had but is very relevant to maybe what i mentioned at the top of the conversation where as a avid fan of music one of my favorite parts about being a music listener is not being passive and just letting the algorithm feed me a bunch of bullshit and then me saying this is the music i'm listening to i as a music fan would rather be on the hunt and i want to hunt for the undiscovered mhmm the band that nobody is talking about the band that is in a garage drinking modelos smoking cigarettes playing awesome music and playing local shows and starts to get picked up on music outlets not rolling stone i'm talking about a music outlet that gets maybe four hundred people a day to visit i wanna find that band i wanna fall in love with that band and once i have found that band fallen in love and supported that band through a purchase of an album i want to then go tell my friends about it because i found this band and i know you're going to love it so check it out and that is kind of the same motion i see with these one of ones it's like okay like you can go have live nation rake you over the coals and spend all of this money on these fees and go see some big stadium or arena show and it might be a good time but you you might be left being like was it really worth like fifteen hundred dollars to see this act what is more fun and maybe what football card collectors are doing is to go find the thing that no one else is talking about and pay the price which i would imagine there's a ton of value in that and you're experiencing it by doing the research understanding the set understanding why the card matters to you and then buying it and posting it so yeah i'm drawing those parallels there but i love it i think the best part of engaging on instagram is not only seeing the cards but learning what other people have they've already done the work and sharing that research so i'm a big fan of this and it could not it doesn't have to be one of ones it could be anything it's just like bringing new cards to the surface that you think are cool and why it matters to me is because a lot of the times like it's collectors i respect and know and trust and so gathering their opinions on posts of pickups and getting to learn a little something while seeing a cool card definitely seems like a win win for everybody yeah it kinda touches on the question last week about do we like curation or value when like looking at a collection like if valuable cards are like a curated instagram page and yeah valuable cards are awesome i do love seeing big valuable cards it is great but i also love seeing a card that i knew nothing about and oh and there's a lengthy caption that dives deep into the an explanation i love this so it's great whenever new cards are unearthed and there's just something fun about like like you're to you're saying like crate digging like finding the band the song the album that that no one's talked about even though it's been out for thirty years there's something about like woah there's a set from ninety nine that i didn't even know about and i've been collecting hardcore for years and years in that era and i had no clue this even existed and there's a one on one in there and or there's other rare parallels in there it's just always awesome to me when that like there's just when you feel like you have a firm grasp on like our like alright i know early two thousands football pretty well it's like i see a post that like is a door that opens up a whole another like apartment building where it's like oh wait there's this whole other area i didn't even know about in two thousand one and two thousand ninety nine whatever so it's it's awesome keep doing it everyone keep keep digging deep one one more comment on this and i think this is the change and this is the shift previously the exposure of these sets and cards and parallels have really come and have been driven by the player super collector i'm thinking about marino collector he collects everything dan marino he's trying to get everything or maybe not everything maybe he is i don't know but i look at his page and just see all of these marino cards and all of these sets and i just have no idea about so i'm learning through that and that's great and that's always going to continue but it's fun to also see like the the researchers the the people who enjoy the work who might not be narrow collecting one player but collect several different players and collect based on several different things and i think that is the element that's maybe rising a little bit is individuals' appreciation for their specific era and their curiosities leading them down rabbit holes and then they find these cards and they're like man this seems like nothing compared to what i would have paid for the you know gym masters or something else so i think that's fun and have really appreciated seeing that come to life yeah shout good opening topic should we get into numbers episode sixty six yeah big ugly autumn marches on episode sixty six has one two three four five six hall of famers we've got alan faneca gene hickerson larry little ray nitschke billy shaw and clyde bulldog turner i gotta talk about clyde bulldog turner real quick because if if you have bulldog as your middle or your moniker i i need to just shut up and listen yeah just already bought a card of him last night as i was doing research it happened i had no choice clyde bulldog turner played for the chicago bears from nineteen forty to nineteen fifty two so thirteen seasons he was the center and a linebacker so he went both ways he was in first team all pro eight times at both positions from nineteen forty to nineteen forty four and forty six to forty eight he won four nfl championships with the bears in forty forty one forty three and forty six so already i was like wait a minute like i knew the name i knew he was a bears legend i did not realize he played center and linebacker for four championship teams so right there i'm like alright i need to get a clyde bulldog turner card in the pc he didn't doesn't have any of the like at least again off one scroll of wikipedia not a lot of the crazy stories like our guy from last week who was making splinters through the spleen but as a rookie turner appeared in eleven games for the bears they won the nineteen forty nfl championship they beat their redskins seventy three zero in the nfl championship game he had a pick six in that game intercepted sammy baugh he had in his first five seasons with the bears he appeared in fifty eight consecutive games played all sixty minutes in eight of those games which is pretty crazy not just offense defense but specialty like did not come off the field won three nfl championships in that in those first five seasons just was an all around stud and there were some great quotes about him according to george halas turner was perhaps the smartest player he ever had he knew every assignment for every player on every on both teams and teammate george musso once said who knows what kind of player he would be if he ever got to rest during a game because he just never came off the field this guy just did it all so shout out bulldog turner i bought a card last night i'm pumped what's what what was the card nineteen fifty one bowman oh it was so it's at the it's end of his career but it because he's in some earlier sets but i like the the way that nineteen fifty one looked just off of just off of vibes alone and there's like a good vintage bears logo on there yeah i just wanted it it was a good clean copy psa five so excited to get that in hand and then i might be like wait why did i buy this i need to sell this but who knows i for now i'm very high on clyde bulldog turner arrows are pointing up on bulldog turner and you know what i think in listening to you describe his career one of the most important elements that maybe should be added to his biography is the fact that this is the first player who has been able to bridge football card podcast eras linebacker summer he would have fit there oh big ugly autumn he's a perfect fit here he is the bridge between eras so shout out clyde bulldog turner damn that makes me that makes me love him even more i think i gotta expand the bulldog pc yeah yeah like he was a first team all pro center in nineteen forty two and he also led the league in interceptions in nineteen forty two with eight how could that'd be like if jason kelsey was getting eight picks in a season what that's insane shout out bulldog okay so i went with alan fanika i feel like if maybe i need to like take all the transcripts and pump them into ai and try to figure out based on the teams all of the guys we pick are associated with i feel like i'm always picking steelers guys so i'm like i've got like five steelers guys covered in the sixty six episodes we've done but alan fanika steelers from nineteen ninety eight to two thousand and seven jets two thousand eight to two thousand nine and ended his career in twenty ten with the cardinals hall of famer super bowl champ six time first team all pro two time second team all pro we have talked about willie parker's seventy five yard touchdown in the super bowl and that doesn't happen without alan fanika pulling and laying down the wood fanika wanna in upon my research in college he was coached up pretty well and that led him to obsess over technical perfection famously noted that his coaches taught him a six inch step is better than an eight inch step and a three inch step isn't good enough when you look at faneca you look at the guard position in players like zach martin and quinton nelson they they really wouldn't be able to have gotten the space to cook like they have cooking cooked without an alan fanico or like a steve hutchinson so he is really someone who transformed the position and i think these are the best guys i think during this era where he played even though he was a lineman and i followed football you didn't know all the linemen or mostly any of the linemen but alan fanico was a name that every time you watch the steelers play his name got brought up on broadcast and the commentators would gush over him so shout out alan fanika i was looking at the highest selling cards and this isn't the highest sale one sold for a hundred and fifty dollars more but it doesn't have an image but he's got this two speaking of upper deck two thousand and two upper deck xl super bowl card holofoil there's sixty five copies this is a psa nine this copy sold in twenty twenty four for eleven hundred dollars so in the highest sale is twelve fifty and a psa nine but i mean this is like twenty twenty four this a card sixty five copies is selling for eleven hundred dollars and i think for me what this tells me is that when steelers fans think about winning that super bowl obviously you think about the willie parker run but they associate fanica with that moment and they won a card of fanica that represents that super bowl so i think that is pretty damn cool collecting moment so shout out alan fanika yeah that's yeah he's one of those players that if you're a collector of that team and respecting the players that won the super bowl he's someone you would a hundred percent want to collect win the win the crowd win your freedom win win over the fan base and you'll win over pcs shout out alan fanika alright big ugly autumn marching on and it's it's really autumn out there now at least today it's starting to get the cold mornings little little too rainy for my liking but we're here we are in big ugly autumn that's i guess that is part of big ugly autumn though no it's not gonna always be sunny out there in the trenches the muck and the mire gotta be it in the muck and the mire yes exactly alright episode sixty six topics first up from bye bye baby cards andy says this is a this is a nice little thought provoking question to get us going has the hobby become too much about buying simply to keep buying where the constant chase leaves little room for patience research or independent thought are we still collecting or have we become or have we become consumers inside a collecting hobby i sometimes wonder whether collectors genuinely discover what they love or whether availability social media comps and repetition slowly teach us which cards we're supposed to want if that's true how much of the market is being fueled by conviction in the cards themselves versus the belief that someone else will always want them next more importantly perhaps collecting should also force us to look inward why do we collect what we collect and what does that choice say about what we value remember or are searching for in our own lives if prices comps instagram and everyone else's opinions disappear tomorrow what would you still choose to collect and why so this i imagine before ev each and every week before i get into my process of creating the flagship episode of stacking slabs that goes out wednesday i'm i'm i'm imagining now andy giving like sitting up on a box giving like a newt rockne type speech and just sharing all of this to motivate me as i'm getting ready to create this episode when i read this question i was just like man this is i i a hundred retweet agree with all of these questions slash points that he's bringing up and i feel like it is foundational to the content that i'm producing regularly so very thought provoking a lot of meat on this bone there's so many different directions we can go and i'm sure we'll volley back and forth but the first thing that i kept coming back to is the difference between collecting and consuming consumption needs another purchase collecting requires you to know why the card belongs with you that is why i am talking about buying less i am talking about building a thesis and developing your own taste those have been like macro topics that i've been talking about a lot and because i think the more clearly you understand what matters to you the less the distractions take over your all your decision making yes people buy cars all the time because they're available they don't even question if they should they might think it's a deal or they might think someone else or see someone else buying something similar there is so much activity that's being driven because people are posting all the time on instagram or cards become available i think the more we can stop and smell the roses research do the work ask ourself these questions the more enjoyable the hobby is it's really hard because everything's moving fast there's fomo there's all of these things that are pushing and pulling us away from making the decisions for our self but the best collectors in this space the most impressive collections in this space are all created because the individual building it has independent thoughts and is driving their collection through independent thinking final note for me on this before i kick it over to you i just think about going to a card show we've all been to card shows you walk around and you look at the cases and they just you see the cases and it's like the same stuff over again it's like this is inventory to these people it's like this is there's no strategy it's just a bunch of popular players and this and that and then you get to that one case and i'll use his him as an example because he was a recent guest and i just saw he had a reel made a deal with king of the cards and that reel went nuts but grant waldorf stories dude you go to hit you you you stop at a card show and even if you don't know grant and you look at his cards in his case you're just like what how what how much time do i have left let me just even if i'm not buying anything let me just look at these cards because there's independent thought there's independent thinking there's a strategy design with how he approaches it and yeah i just wish there were more people that realize this and i think this is a great question or set of questions from andy and really good topic to dig into here yeah absolutely yeah shout out grant his case is always a must hit at any show just even if it's just window shopping just awesome to see cool cards and it's always a good crop i think what andy's getting at i mean i think it's a great thought exercise to do with yourself right like if social media didn't exist what would my collection look like it's a very good thing to do to try out just to you know test if why you're buying things what you're doing all that but it also got me thinking like social media doesn't have to exist for you like we are all choosing to engage in the hobby at this level like the way you hear about it all the time there are those collectors who like i mean there's more of them than there are of us collectors who don't have instagram or social media at all that are just plugging away adding cards to their collection they're not engaging in this like digitized hobby for lack of a better word but like by choosing to make a card instagram that's a active signal for engaging in the hobby at a different level like beyond collecting like you're looking for something like we all are like when we post a card like when we choose to make a card instagram account take a picture of a card and post it on the internet like that is like signaling something whether it's like we want validation or attention or or money if we're trying to sell something just like we're all seeking something when we post cards and it's totally fine to like enjoy that side of it and want to do that and like like to to do it in the sense of like trying to buy and sell stuff more than just like collecting things because i think part of too what andy's getting at is like the if you strip away social media like what are you collecting that's like true to your like that you just want in your collection forever because i i think there's just two sides to the hobby with and it's a sliding scale and everyone's in between it but like are you buying something to try and sell it or are you just like buying something to like stash it away in the box because like everyone is doing both to some degree and when there's crossover that's where you sometimes see the conflict like with the whole pc for life thing where it's like someone's saying that it's going on on this part of the slider on the far right is part of the slider but they're really you know using tactics from the far left there there's just dynamics there so like you can do whatever you want to whatever degree you want just don't be a dickhead you know like that's part of this whole thing is if you're saying something's for your collection but it whatever moral of the story don't be a dickhead in any walk of life but back to andy's point i guess is that yeah like when he asks if everyone's opinion disappeared what would you still choose to collect you could make everyone's opinion disappear by just deleting social media is i guess maybe what i'm getting at and how i i'm that was a rant that i don't know if i you know really got to the answer it's more of just like it is just a fascinating thing to think about of how social media and the internet and technology intertwine with this like very personal analog hobby like there's just so much there to consider and think about yes i wanna shout out everybody who listens to the football card podcast because there are many of you who don't have instagram or social media i hear from you still and i appreciate you and i think there is a really neat way to think about your collecting and the decisions you make without social media the viewpoint of social media for me as a collector is i've always thought of it as a way to enhance the experience and if it becomes a distraction then i just do less of it so yeah it's it's interesting the i i tend to start to see people start to buy things you know when you and this is like this is not like there's no judgment at all but you'll you'll see someone buy something and it'll feel like it's completely out of left field and you're like oh that's interesting and then my curiosity is always like trying to dig into the intentions of those people like why this subject in this card now when this has never been anything you've been interested in which i promote it it's okay to change it's okay to evolve but it's interesting when it is tied to like a macro trend with what's happening in the market again no judgment like we can all do what we want but the fun part of collecting for me is trying to discover for myself and do the work this like topic i don't know why it it triggers in my head the response that i get from group chats of friends when the major things happen in football like let's take sorry to bring this up but it's it's on my mind take like the caleb injury and you've alluded to like social media but it was like seconds after like that play happened i started to hear commentary in my group chats and i could tell that the commentary and the reactions and thoughts were being completely driven from what the individuals were seeing on their for you page and i'm like this is messed up like the algorithms are controlling the minds of the people that i'm interacting with or that is my perception and i think that is similar to what happens a lot with cards so i say this and i say it like i'm kind of i'm like half serious but like my talking point that i've been saying a lot is when people bring stuff to me or bring up information and they they've they're sourcing it from the internet my i always just say i don't believe it like i my default is i don't believe anything like if you come from the level of not believing it and then the individual has to prove it's true to me that's a a better operating system so a lot of thoughts in my head regarding the internet and how we all interact specifically in sports and in the hobby so my my mind is going in a million different directions right now no it's the algorithm has a choke hold on us all and like the our own we all have our own bubbles and echo chambers that we live in i mean like we don't need to get political but like looking at like twenty sixteen election like how all that went down where like i remember living in new york and it was like there's no way this guy wins like like anyone you asked it was just not even there wasn't even a chance and then it it's just like that snl sketch with dave chappelle where it's like there's no way and then it happens it's like wait what how like everything i read said that you already had a ninety eight percent chance and it's like well yeah because we're just in our own little bubble and it was amazing how when like the caleb thing happened all the people that don't like him for painting his fingernails also don't like this injury thing like it's like the same thing like the if you reacted this way to this event the second that he went down i i'm like i know this person's gonna react the exact same way that they did like people don't like caleb the people that don't like caleb williams weren't gonna see this the injury thing and be like oh wow maybe this is just a twenty four year old kid who thought his season ended and that's why he reacted that way and then it turned out it wasn't and like he was just as surprised as everyone else but like you know may like no one could ever see that as a human moment if like you already hated this kid yeah people saw it as like yep this is just another another piece of evidence for why like i don't like this kid so the the haters are gonna hate and but a lot of it yes is just dictated by your own algorithm your own echo chamber like it's like the same memes that that i'm seeing people post it's like really like that's the that's the joke that you wanna make out of all this like that's what your takeaway is from this incident like and i get it like people were throwing out there like if it had happened to jordan love or a packers player like you would have reacted the same way and i don't know if they're wrong like i brought like i probably would have had fun with it so like i totally understand the internet is gonna internet but there's also some reactions where i'm like wow people really hate this kid like they really don't like that he paints his fingernails like that really bothers people which is just interesting to see that that what a kid did when he was nineteen years old has such a choke hold on grown men but what what do i what have i i've been preaching of this for in the card space a lot it's like to me weakness the ultimate sign of weakness and weak human beings are when you spend all of your time talking about and commentating about somebody else and what you don't like what this collector's buying and how dare they do that and oh they're just gonna sell it right away or look at caleb williams he paints his fingernails how dare him like to me that's that's crazy like i'm not a bears fan i'm not a caleb williams fan but i was by the way here's here's some evolution for me like i i think red zone is kinda lame i'm kinda done with red zone oh i don't ever i never watch red zone you can't you can't watch football like red zone is built for fantasy football people but like i made a decision and i it was like the first time one o'clock this year where i was like i can watch red zone or i can watch bears and vikings and i was like i'd much rather watch bears and vikings the whole game into its entirety which i know the result didn't go your way but it was an awesome football game like it was great defense great scheming like it was i i really really enjoyed it and then that moment happened where caleb got hurt and i'm not like caleb went to usc i'm a notre dame fan like i'm not a caleb williams guy but like i was and i'm not saying this to say oh look at me and i'm i have emotions and i care but i'm saying like i was like that sucks because last year i gotta watch caleb williams bring all these moments to me as a football fan and it was exciting and like anytime anybody gets hurt in the nfl like my perception is like that sucks because that takes away from the game so that annoyed me and i'm not even a bears or caleb fan like i like got on x or twitter or whatever the hell you call it for like two seconds saw all the memes i was like this is so lame like this is this is so lame that this is what we're doing and people actually think it's funny so yeah that's a lot andy's opened up a pandora's box with this one i guess absolutely yeah i mean it it is what it is the the like i get it it's low hanging fruit too it's just like people material simple to and like i get it because i was riding high and it like i said i had i had tipped over and drank the kool aid of like i'm gonna let myself enjoy that this team is good and people did not like that you know anytime there's like something that is going towards the top or like succeeding people wanna see it fail and like ben johnson talking about one in the highest scoring offense and then they score fifty nine points and then people are having to be like wait is this legit and like even caleb haters had to start to be in like wait he played a great week one things look good and then the second like there's a chink in the armor and like something happens it's like okay here we go like finally i can unleash and get to watch the thing crumble like it's any happens in all sports anytime something like starts having success people wanna wanna see it fail and especially caleb is just the lightning rod i get it he's like the he's not tom brady in the sense of he's not the like stand in the pocket tough like and caleb's tough his rookie year he took seventy sacks the dude got destroyed and it's like it's not that he's not tough like the whole crying thing in my interpretation isn't it was purely from pain i think it was he didn't know what was going on he couldn't walk he thought it was a serious injury and he had to get taken out of the game that the bears were really they were on the five yard line about to score like that is what the tears are from not necessarily like oh this hamstring hurts so yeah and i saw a great tweet that bears fans and the nfl roasted jay cutler in the twenty ten nfc championship when he like sprained his acl and mcl and got taken out of the game because he didn't show any emotion and was just standing on the sideline and then caleb shows too much emotion and everyone kills him for that like you can't you can't win with the haters and doubters of which there are many they're just always gonna be there lurking in the shadows waiting to unleash when your team does something bad mhmm yeah shout out andy getting getting us in the andy episode of the football card pod and also this whole thing made me gutted even more for your pacers and halliburton and like how devastating that must have been i have a i i was always empathetic and sad for that situation i wanted to see the hear from all of you we see your collections don't take the bait that's all i have to say and what i can say about football cards when i'm not buying football cards there's three reasons it's in somebody else's collection it's too expensive or have never popped up in a pop report and i'm like does this card exist those are like the areas that i'm like constantly trying to navigate to land said football card so mhmm yeah don't don't take the bait and i believe gunther is saying this like tongue in cheek towards like people are collecting football cards which is why it's impossible to find them because they're not just flipping through the the auction house cycle and they actually are in collections so we've talked about that before that's that's where the real collectors lie are in football cards the reason you see so many high end basketball sales is because no one collects basketball cards over and over and over alright next from bolt card crew thoughts on football card collectors being team collectors first before player collectors so my cycle went from i collected peyton manning player collector became a team collector and now i'm shifting back to focus on team or players excuse me i think team collecting teaches you probably more than anything else like you understand the sets the products the parallels the eras the years it's a good avenue to learn not the best avenue to see a return on your investment if you care about it so i think if you love a team and you're just getting going it is really fun to think about the different ways to build out projects collecting collect sets that sort of thing and i'm pro team collector but it it reached a point for me was just like this this like the way i'm operating right now and the responsibilities i have as a father and a business owner do not align with this this team collection that i'm building there's a there's a a big disconnect here so yeah now i'm moving back to players maybe this time next year i'll move back to team i don't know but that's kinda where i'm at it's it's all flowing the i said it just starts with what passion drove you to collect like mine started with team collecting i was like alright at least on the football side i was like bears let me just start buying bears cards from my favorite players and started kind of piling them up that way and through that also had my players i was like alright priest holmes that's a player i wanna collect that player so there's there's i don't think that football card collectors are always team collectors first i would disagree with that i think it's i'd say it's pretty even across the board if not i bet player collector actually drives football card i think player collecting drives most collecting absolutely and team collecting to your point like you brought up good points feel like we've all experienced that of when it comes to the storage of value team collecting is not the most efficient or like dude for us and which is fine though like and it it all comes in waves where sometimes i'm like i want this team set because i want i love this set or this parallel and i like having all these players in there but then sometimes you look at it after two years or three years or two months whatever it is and you're like oh that but that player didn't really do anything you know like you start to dig a little deeper and you're like alright the set and the parallel isn't sparking as much joy as it used to and the player themselves doesn't spark the joy so like why why do i have this or or i have fifteen representations of this player in my pc who had like one good season with the bears do i need all of those should i just the best one or like my favorite it doesn't even have to be the best most valuable it's just my favorite like priest homes i'm experiencing that where i'm like i have my two favorite priest homes cards and i'm like that's that like do i need i literally have a binder full of priest stuff that like i love having but it's like do i need all this because sometimes then i could look at it and be like wait there's like thousand bucks here i could i like instead of this being just a binder on the shelf i could buy a different card like but who knows it's all it all comes and goes there's no right answer the yeah there's no right answer i will say this about the transition out of the team collecting mode is that it's in like it is incredible to me that i spent all this time building up this collection and it's like a a puzzle that's all put together and then like a decision is made like let me like i'll just move that one card and then dude it's like an avalanche it's like i don't need any of these anymore it's just crazy how connected all of those like in the team collecting mode how connected things get and when you disconnect a piece of it it's like i look at it i'm like if i got rid of that one piece then i don't need any of these anymore so that's an interesting observation that i've gone through but i also love like change and trying to figure things out so yeah good good timing on this question from my end you can learn a lot team collecting you might not make any money if you have to sell the stuff you might lose money but it's a good good way to learn for sure yeah and like i'm just i'm having more fun right now in football card collecting and just car cards in general of like like identifying stores of value and like participating in the hobby in a more active way and maybe that's yep because i work in the industry now so like everyone i'm talking to is like buying and selling and like just moving around in the hobby in a different way than maybe i was three years ago where i was more buy a card put it in the box buy a card put it in the box now i'm just have enough experience and knowledge and enough saved searches where if i see a card that i'm like oh yeah that's not a card necessarily for my collection but that i think is undervalued or i think is a good price and like maybe i buy that and grade it and sell it or like just like if i just buy some of these pieces that like i don't even know what the end goal is but they're cards that i just think are good buys that one day i will then have the ammunition needed to turn them into like the the card that i do wanna put into the box and stash away when that comes available because i feel like over the last year i maxed out what i was willing to sell within my own collection to buy other stuff like i had gotten we i've we talked about this it was like we got so focused and narrowed down i'm like i don't wanna sell any of these like i can't sell a bears card like that's against my code like what but what do i do because i wanna buy other cards i still wanna keep this you know constant buying and selling thing going and eventually you just alright but to your point as soon as you sell as soon as you remove one piece one jenga block it all it all goes down because all of a sudden it's like yeah it's just not held together the same anymore you know what doesn't go down is the bottom level and what started the build and it's crazy this cycle started with this andrew luck pursuit and then you build all on top of it and then you break it down to the studs and what remains is the andrew luck stuff so that tells me something it's like all i really cared about during all of this it was fun to go through this and build it and connect and do this but like i'm not i'm i'm zero interest in selling it to this andrew luck stuff so that's i'm i'm back to square one but i'm not trying to build up again i'm just like very i'm very content and it's actually made me love those cards even much more it's like you've survived this cycle and you're the reason that that cycle existed before this like that says something to me as a collector a hundred percent and this like to go back to the andy question of i just wondered did did people go through these cycles and consolidate pre social media i'm sure they did but i doubt it was at the clip that no worries i experienced and like or you experienced but that that is just always made one of the best statements of all time taking ownership of the of what he did and it was a great statement so tony romo i'm forever a fan of him because it's not often people hold themselves cards you're always just like i don't yeah too much going on like yeah there's a lot but it's troy polamaro like the selection is small so i yeah and i like that it's canton absolutes is also a very bold set like like a surefire hall of famer is what you're saying about the players that they chose to include in this set and so when when they get it right that's awesome i'd love to look back at this checklist and see who else was dubbed or deemed a can't an absolute and if they made it or not cool card though cool card that is it for marketwatch alright collecting updates anything on your
