The Football Card Podcast #65: What Week 1 Does to Your Football Card Decisions

hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking slabs himself brett how you doing i'm well i'm excited to be here the one of my favorite parts of this entire week is going through the morning rush getting kids where they need to be running back to my desk and getting to hit record on the football card podcast there is a lot to talk about we've got a season that is underway already so there's there's no more off season it is big ugly autumn still but we also have a real live nfl season happening and there's a lot of stuff happening with football cards and i think that this is why we created this show to give this space so we can dig into all of the finer topics around football cards and most importantly football cards so fired up to be here how are you i'm good and that's a good call out where so we're this is episode sixty five sixty five weeks straight of the football card pod shout out us shout out all the listeners the fact that we've only covered one nfl season in those sixty five like we did a full summer leading into a season and then we did a whole winter summer spring summer after that so out of sixty five episodes we only have probably twenty episodes of live football coverage in there twenty one or twenty two with playoffs so i'm glad we're back i'm glad we have football to talk about on the football card pod because when when you cards and football cards those two pillars are always activated on the football card podcast but when you activate that that third light the football part of it you we're firing on all cylinders baby let's go firing on all cylinders and we made a bold proclamation maybe i did i can't remember if you supported or not but last footballcard podcast you know we we tend to be anti mainstream anti hype and there's there was nothing more anti mainstream and anti hype or hyped up going into the season than the greatest team of all time the los angeles rams so it was it was fun to see that team humbled and humbled by a very very very good forty niners team we got an opportunity to grab a lunch in real life last week and that game had happened and i think my big takeaway especially from the first drive of that game is like why didn't the mike evans to san francisco get more airtime or coverage when that happened i was like man that seems like just what brock purdy needs a reliable soon to be hall of fame vet and there was there there's been no steps lost i think mike evans fits in perfectly with the kyle shanahan offense and what they're trying to do in san francisco and if i'm a if i'm a niners fan that that team is dangerous it's loaded with guys everyone's healthy right now and that team has never been healthy so look out san francisco forty niners yeah just for them to they've had some instability at wide receiver over the past few seasons to so just to be able to bring in mike evans who i compared him when we were talking i was like i feel like he's getting the larry fitzgerald treatment in the sense of and i'm saying that more from like a fantasy perspective where i feel like i always stayed away from larry fitzgerald because i was like he can't keep doing this like what what were his stats last year okay he had thirteen hundred yards ten touchdowns like okay that's like some good season but i'm like alright that's clearly a decline and then he has another thirteen hundred yards and ten touchdown like doing having a guy who's capable of getting that every single season that like that is a very good player because if you have that piece it opens up so many other pieces so yeah the mike evans thing is he was banged up last year so i feel like he kind of you know wasn't talked about that much and yes he is thirty three now and it's not like he his stat line isn't insane from that first game the six catches forty nine yards and a touchdown but his impact was very clear of yes this is a hall of fame receiver who knows how to get open who is a great piece for someone like shanahan to have security blanket for purdy just is like a great piece for that offense so yeah definitely something that flew under the radar but now in hindsight it's like oh yeah that makes a ton of sense and was a great move this is completely off the cuff but i might have a take and i'll i'll form this but it feels like the consummate professional is a dying breed in the nfl and when i think about consummate professionals at the wide receiver position the first name that comes to the top of my brain is mike evans like sometimes you just don't need the youngest or the fastest or the most electric you just need the individual who views playing a game of football as his job studies the playbook understands the opposition and just goes out there and does his job so we need more consummate professionals in this league mike evans certainly is one of them yep and you can tell he's just at the level of veteran and consummate pro where he's he's trying to get a good look for purdy he's trying to do the best thing for the offense he's not trying to like break open and get the big touchdown himself or like do you know chasing the stats the way that maybe a younger player might which such a valuable piece to have so shout out to niners niners look good we were both right in the we talked about it beforehand we said we're leaning niners we backed it up by both picking the niners in the football card podcast pick'em league how are you doing right now what was your result i have i think i know mine i haven't looked yet but i think i know where i landed where where did you land yeah i tanked after my two and o start of course i finished eight and eight so tough sledding after that let me search where stack eat slabs is i think i i looked before monday but eleven and five yeah i i was an idiot and i picked against your bears and i picked against the i picked against the chiefs those are the two ones that when they i saw the results of both of those those were both that i was like on the fence with both of those and was really pissed off at myself yeah of it i had i picked the broncos i picked the cowboys i picked the i picked the colts i thought the colts were gonna do it i feel like the colts are always winning early season big games where it's like yeah colts look good so your colts let me down a little bit yeah they let me down too pal i picked the packers i think i'll pick the packers every year strictly a spy pick where if they lose it's like alright i'll i'll sacrifice a pick in the pick'em league for a packers at all and then what was i gonna say oh i had picked the falcons over the sealers which was just brutal i i like when i rushed through and clicked everything i wasn't privy to the quarterback situation and then yeah but because then the picks get locked in they do lock all the picks in before thursday and then they're locked and so then all the news was coming out on like saturday of like oh cooper rush might not even play and i was like wait a minute cooper rush what what happened so yeah picking my picking the falcons did not go my way but shout out yeah who's at the top of the leaderboard right now shout out the ball knowers there are three teams tied for first at thirteen and three wow we we've got two two sports cards at thirteen and three black hat cards at thirteen and three and then bob meth i don't know who bob meth is but shout out bob meth getting those getting those pics right at thirteen and three so that's very impressive and then i was scrolling down yeah i saw you tied seventeen at eleven and five and have to shout out my wife my wife is in the league and she went eleven and five so knows more ball than me apparently should i should she replace you for a couple episodes until you have do because i don't know what the hell i'm talking about apparently so it's we're just getting started though week one i love looking at the leaderboard though this is gonna be fun as it develops you know already five games back not where we wanna be but at least your team is one and know so you can hang your head on that yeah i i don't care about anything else like nothing else can affect me like pick up and at least you don't have to go into kansas city and try to redeem yourself damn oh yeah and that's is that sunday night or monday night sunday night yeah talk about the the schedule makers it's like yeah we're gonna throw lamar jackson at him and then you know then we'll make them go in prime time to play patrick mahomes and the chiefs it's like are the chiefs just at home all year are they just like taylor swift residency like the chiefs have every home game it feels like they're it's always an arrowhead i don't know if i've ever seen the chiefs play a road game every game on prime time is arrowhead stadium's rocking they cut to the box donna kelsey and taylor swift are there like tom cruise was there tom cruise is in the box what why is i guess he's promoting a movie but yeah tough tough game for the colts yep good game for the bears yep i'm excited i'm happy nfl season's here but one week at a time that's all i keep telling myself last like thinking back to last year when the bears lost to jj mccarthy week one holtz looked like a juggernaut like it can all change on a dime we know this so mhmm just trying to stay stay humble stay focused i i wanna shout out i think we mentioned this and i remembered it at the eleventh hour before we were getting ready to get on here but wanna give some love credit and credibility it's nice when we request something and people do it and i feel like we need to recognize the people who go above and beyond so i wanna shout out my man ed at dev collector i was on a run with ed during the national big time runner big time fan of the pod but he decided to take a photo on his run-in london in front of what appeared to be a castle and he just snapped the snapped the picture of his watch and it just had the football card podcast artwork so we are global it is a global game there are these international games but we also have listeners going global and sharing the football card podcast with a whole another country so shout out ed everyone go follow him at dev collector yeah that was awesome quadruple points for ed we also had another great from philadelphia posted listening to the football card podcast at the eagles game so screenshot he has photos of him listening to the football card pod at the eagles game that's the one of the sickest things i've ever seen having having to get a third party involved to take a picture of you listening to the football card pod there's there's levels to this so shout out anyone running and listening shout out shout out to anyone mowing the lawn and listening we're about to be out of that season but i have the over the summer had lots of dms of people talking about listening while mowing and i'm a bit i'm always listening to a podcast when i mow so knowing that we're in in the ears while people are getting those lines looking right is always nice to hear and yeah running doing anything listening to football card pod is awesome i'm visualizing philadelphia sitting in the stands and listening to the pod pregame and then just hitting pause when he sees a commanders fan and just talking smack maybe throwing a beer can at him true philadelphia fashion and then hitting play again and listening to us ramble on about football cards and most importantly football cards so shout out to philadelphia yeah almost a could have been a steve bartman incident of this guy with headphones in the game and he messes with the ball somehow affects affect wouldn't ever affect a football game but yeah bartman bartman might have been listening to the football card pod actually he never he might have been yes time traveler alright episode sixty five big ugly autumn this is the heart of big ugly autumn moving on but we've got some topics we got an opening topic that's yeah worth discussing a a sale that we were kinda tracking while it was live but never talked about the final so kick us off yeah so it's it's funny these cards come they're up at auction and then they go and we move on but i wanna pause here and want to bring up the fact that the twenty thirteen tom brady finite sold for one point two three eight million dollars on all which obviously is a monumental sale anytime a football card hits the million dollar mark it's probably going to be something we wanna discuss but as i was looking at the sale which it'll be interesting to see has it fallen out of the flipper four deck vortex has it landed with the collector only time will tell but when i saw this sale the first question i had that i wanted to bring to the football card podcast is does this sale change anything materially for the football card market yeah crazy sale in the sense that it is now the highest selling prism finite of all time the highest selling prism black of all time is the wembe true black out of basketball but the highest selling prism finite is now the brady at one point two three eight million it surpassed the justin herbert one point one million dollar sale and then there's the another one that's up there would be the giannis prism black mosaic so it's not labeled as a finite from twenty thirteen prism basketball but that was one point one four so brady still clears the giannis but the brady twenty thirteen giannis twenty thirteen and then the justin herbert twenty twenty are the top three highest selling finites of all time so just thought that was interesting that a football card now owns that top spot i'd be interested to see if a twenty thirteen like if the curry sold or you know or or kobe or lebron like what one of those would do after something like this but i also think i have to shout out us again because football card football cards are selling for over a million dollars now they there was a stretch when they couldn't break a million and now this is at least the third in the last few months with the allen shields and feel like there was something else in there but as far as what this does for the rest of the football card market to me i don't think it changes much it's like brady is still just in like such this different stratosphere brady universe yeah it's just doesn't make sense because i have a twenty thirteen prism finite alshon jeffery who beat tom brady in a super bowl won an over he's breaking the super bowl what does that make mine worth worth now time to retire yeah i did not like that brady sale doesn't make me look at that card any different of like this is worth more because that brady is like i just view brady as kind of its own thing happening but it that i but who knows there was that manning twenty fourteen up for sale right now believe it's drake's copy he i saw him post about it on instagram so i'll be yeah interested to see what that does and not saying the the brady will influence that but then again when we were talking about that josh allen shield sale it was nice that it had that like stepping stone shield sale before it that we talked about how like it hit that the second one hit that high high because the first one had already broken a million like the non rookie broke a million and then the rookie cleared that so maybe that twenty thirteen brady sale like people looking at that gives them confidence to bid higher on a twenty fourteen manning finite because they see that you know people really are willing to spend a million dollars on a finite but i don't know i didn't for me personally i didn't look at that and think it changed anything from my collection the thing that i wanna hit on is maybe that comparison between those two cards because i wasn't even thinking about the manning but it feels like it's since that card is is running it's a good time to talk about that in comparison with the brady when i when if i knew nothing about the value of these cards if i knew nothing about prism and i was just a non collector who was introduced to cards and those were like the first two cards that i saw i think my mind would explode because i would my perception of cards would be from my childhood and what i remember of these paper based cards right and then to be presented with these cards that not only look cool have great photography but just like have an aesthetic about them that is mesmerizing is pretty special so not talking about the price but just like from an appearance perspective like the twenty thirteen brady finite is a wonderful looking card the twenty fourteen manning is a wonderful looking card and i think just at the end of the day like the appearance of these cards like really matters when people are spending big big money on them i do think that it it's impossible to like tell like will this twenty thirteen brady material materially impact the price of manning the twenty fourteen manning but i think he like it only can help i think so much of this hobby is about validation and collectors who are spending big money want to be validated and i think if you are a bidder on the manning or you wanna be a bidder on the manning like looking over and seeing what tom brady's biggest rival and i think is the greatest sports rivalry of all time sorry larry bird and magic johnson but like it's it's the timing on that couldn't be better from a listing it perspective after the brady so i hadn't thought about that up until us talking about it right now but the brady sale definitely has me interested in what is going to happen with the manning maybe more now than ever before yeah both awesome cards that brady sold a couple times in the last it did year so that curious to see where that ends up or if it just hopefully i don't see it again for a while exactly that would be cool but yeah one point two for the twenty thirteen what's that twenty twelve because for a while there it was like i wonder if the twenty twelve is a million dollar card or not i think we have our answer the twenty twelve finite will easily clear a million dollars so but again even if that happens i don't think that changes everything for twenty twelve so i think brady is kind of in a league of his own he is in a league of his own but yeah we've got big cards to talk about so we're gonna talk about them on the football card podcast what else should should we just move forward get into the number of it all let's do it episode sixty five big ugly autumn marches on there are three hall of famers to wear sixty five alvin bethea tom mack and gary zimmerman of the three hall of famers i'm gonna talk about gary zimmerman really quick he was a offensive tackle for the minnesota vikings from eighty six to ninety two and the denver broncos from ninety three to ninety seven drafted in the second round thirty six overall by the los angeles express in the usfl draft he played some games there he was teammates with steve young there eventually usfl folds he joins the vikings and then ultimately joins the broncos and he was part of their super bowl championship team the first super bowl that they won of those like back to backs with elway but what's interesting to me about gary zimmerman is during his time in minnesota he was famous for his refusal to interact with the media well during his entire career he's famous for this but it started in minnesota it came about to an early incident in his nfl career where comments made by him where he stated like the offense both the offense and defense didn't play well enough were misconstrued to be comments that the defense didn't play well enough so basically you know the media did what the media does and got a headline out of him and it made some of his teammates mad which then made zimmerman mad at the media and he just boycotted sports media for the rest of his career which hell yeah i think that's just kinda awesome taking that stand like shame on you shame on me like you you wronged me i'm never talking to you again when he went to the broncos he continued to not talk to the media and the rest of the linemen participated in that and so no denver offensive lineman ever spoke to the media during this era and it became a long running tradition that would continue until a full decade after his retirement he retired in ninety seven in two thousand seven the nfl created the broncos o line rule in response requiring all players to talk to the media so i feel like we hear about that where it's like oh so and so refused or like you know but they have to and just interesting to know that gary zimmerman was kind of at the forefront of all of that so shout out gary zimmerman three time first team all pro two time second team all pro seven time pro bowler super bowl champ hall of famer gary zimmerman number sixty five sometimes you just don't wanna talk to the media and i can respect that i think about how brutal losing can be and especially after poor performances like i think about the the bo nix moment this week and being asked about what happened like with the interception and you could just tell bo nix obviously not in a good mood and his response was kind of displayed that so yeah if you're a quarterback there's a lot of accountability there you're the star of the show like answer the questions but like why do you need to interview a lineman like why do linemen have to talk i just it's against the aura it is big ugly autumn it's like they're not they're they shouldn't be required to give quotes so i respect gary zimmerman's position mhmm not there to be on camera not there to talk there to be in the trenches pushing people around that's what the big uglies are there for a guy that pushed a lot of people around is my sixty five and that's lane johnson mhmm i think he is one of the more surefire soon to be hall of famers in waiting everybody has great things to say about the career of lane johnson and lane johnson as a person two time super bowl champ two time first team all pro three time second team all pro he has played a hundred and sixty eight games he has started a hundred and sixty eight games one of the more compelling stories that i pulled in learning about lane johnson is first of all he is playing in his final year this year and i respect the reason why i mean i feel like lane johnson is a guy who could play forever but he is parents are getting older and he's got a family and he just wants to spend more time with his family which is very respectable but in twenty twenty one johnson missed games due to severe anxiety and physical withdrawal symptoms after tapering off medication prompting him to openly share his mental health battles it said that his vulnerability transformed team culture inspiring teammates like jordan ma ma'alata to seek support in establishing johnson as a vital mental health resource across the league so these guys play these guys kill people they are monsters on the field but i like to hear these types of stories where an individual is going through something and instead of doing it in isolation decides to speak up and speak by speaking up that has a positive impact not only on the locker room but individuals who are going through similar struggles i think mental health in football doesn't get talked about enough i think i'm i'm i'm i'm proud to be a colts fan because of the colts in that organization's ability to have a whole campaign around kicking the stigma and trying to make it more normal to talk about mental health mental health is something that is certainly something that i try to advocate for so you do these episodes you do the research you put the shows together and i've always thought highly of lane johnson just as a player but after kind of reading that story it it has certainly made me a fan of lane johnson so a great number sixty five yeah shout out lane johnson i think you have a cool lane johnson card i do yeah lane johnson we've got his twenty twenty five topps chrome superfractor one of one so it is an offensive lineman that they put in the set which going through the checklist and you commented about your team set and guys like it is it is nice that topps is dedicating some space to the the big ugly so this card sold for one thousand eight hundred and ninety five dollars april nineteenth but i also thought it was interesting i was like i wonder if i was like i look at the start of his career it was twenty thirteen and i was like well there's topps chrome super fractures in twenty thirteen has it ever sold and yes it has sold so his rookie card which is a classic combine shot of him doing a forty yard dash sold for five hundred dollars october twenty fourth twenty twenty two and that card his super factor rookie is in a psa ten that is sick what a cool pair that would be the bookends of rookie year super factor tops chrome twenty thirteen to have them the or i guess he'll be in twenty twenty six twenty six will be the last year but that twenty twenty five super fracture is awesome like just great foot like tops crushed twenty twenty five continue every time i see cards that i haven't seen before like this is a great shot of lane johnson the colors everything that's just an awesome card some people would rather have his gold vinyl twenty seventeen out of five instead of that card though shame did you did you learn anything this week from the fallout i feel like that conversation continued yeah do we have a we i think we might have a question around it i think there's a question around it there was one other fallout to the the whole pc for life thing i saw we got tagged in a story i forgot i should screenshot this and read it out loud but it was like basically saying they they don't agree with our take on it because we are like encouraging lying basically that like we were on the side of saying it's okay to say that this is pc for life even though if your intention is to sell it right away which we were never trying to say that and i don't think the buyer in that situation none of that happens none of us know what happens i was saying that i think it's totally normal if after two years with a card you think okay maybe i wanna sell this now even though two years ago it felt like a card you're gonna keep forever that i think is totally normal and fine we we do not condone lying to get cards on the football card pod just making that clear interesting interpretation yeah alright good stuff big uglies should we get into some topics let's get into them alright this is kind of a twofer i added a second part to it late last night i don't know if you saw this but it's kind of a extension of question one from a different person but steelers card fella says and this question was before week one they submitted it i was gonna say before week one and then question the second part alright steelers card fella said with both the colts and bears seeming to be on the competitive upswing do prior or current collecting lanes start to feel boring and mundane as if you're reveling in years past does your collecting style or goals evolve a bit based on the current state of the team you follow while they go through their current season journey for instance although everyone has high hopes before the current season starts if your team starts out hot and looks like they may go deep in the playoffs do you think you might find yourself buying cool sp or insert cards of current players while you revel in that euphoria you wanna start there or do you want me to read this second no let's start there so the interesting part of this question for me is that i i have always found solace even when my team sucks with buying cards because it just some reason it just makes me feel better so that is like been my operating system like it has been like okay i just leave the stadium it's a bad game i'm more interested in going through my safe searches and finding a piece from that i need from kind of the current day i don't know why that's just how i've always been also on the other side of it when my team is doing really well i have always been interested in buying cards too so because why not your team's doing well you wanna join in the fun join in the excitement i before the season started i've been making some massive changes with my pc and i realized like that's like that either way buying cards because of what's happening on the field or because of my fandom isn't necessarily what i wanna be doing from a long term perspective i have reached the point where it's like i wanna be more thoughtful be more methodical around how i'm spending my money and i think that approach is kinda like the new era of collecting for me it is just trying to trying to be more thoughtful and try to be less reactionary i understand the excitement buys they're fun but the excitement buys sometimes when the the streak ends or when the season ends you look at that and you're like why did i buy this card so that's kinda my take from my personal perspective on how i am going about my collecting into this season yeah that makes total sense i think what i wrote down was like we're constantly navigating what excites us in collecting and it's very emotional so it's again back to the thing of a card you own that you think is a forever card in two years could change that's just because outside factors team performance player performance set releases like there's so many variables that can change over time that can excite you as a collector and like i'm very like adhd in my collecting sometimes of like or just pat like all of a sudden some new idea just gets me so hype and i'm like all i wanna do is focus everything on that idea and you look at your collection and then you're looking at it kind of as you just look at it at a different lens of like these are potential resources for me to fuel this new idea that i have and it's hard to always know if that current idea is going to be the start of something that continues for years and years in your collection or is a flash in the pan that six months later you're like yeah maybe that idea wasn't great and i just sacrifice better ideas to get to this new thing that didn't even last so like there's no right answer there like all of that is in constant motion and like specifically with the bears or my team collecting where he's asking performance like when the bears are bad i focus on past teams now that they're good i just wanna collect this team is my personal take on it right now like this this is already the most exciting offensive team i've ever watched in my lifetime which is kinda sad that it only took a a year in a game for me to be able to say that when i've been watching the bears for thirty years so but that but that's something to me like i was i when the bears stumped three years ago i was down to collect the twenty eighteen mitch trubisky team because i'm like well that's the best team i've watched in the last decade so i guess that like i'd rather collect that than this current team but now that this current team is good i'm looking at like a cool mitch trubisky gold prism that i have that i'm like this is a cool card but you know it'd be cooler if it was a caleb williams card and if that's right or wrong i don't know but like in ten years am i gonna wish i had bought more caleb williams cards or if i had hung on to that mitch card i don't know it's hard to say but you look like you wanna say something no i i was just gonna i i don't wanna interrupt your flow but i have a comment on team collecting if you wanna keep cooking there no that that was that's pretty much it yeah i i think as a team collector i have come to a very very important realization and that the realization is this when you collect your team the chances of your collection holding value aren't very good so that is just something that i've been thinking a lot about and maybe i'll do an entire episode on it but because of the emotion when the cards get listed you're likely going to pay more than everyone else and if you evolve out of your team project or team collecting the odds of you getting a return on what you paid i'm not saying it's impossible but the chances are a lot lower than collecting an individual player and that is something through my observations i didn't go through when i've gone through my evolution and sold my cold school prisms and gold vinyl i didn't like do matching dollar for dollar on like what i spend i just don't have the time to do that but i just i like came to this decision of like oh this card i definitely paid more for this than what i'm seeing itself for for now and i i i think team collectors might realize that but i just think that's in very very important to note and some people might not care and if you don't care that's great like you're here for the cards but that's just something that is on my mind based on kinda my last three or four months yes a hundred percent because like these runs and projects are it's like there's a limited pool of buyers who want to do the same thing and it's awesome when you meet them and they're passionate and you guys can help each other acquire cards but when it comes time to sell it's not i'm not convinced that i'm gonna get my money back from this mitsubishi vehicle for some psa ten i'll probably take a little haircut on it and then you know what that's fine but and also with collecting there's just the cycle of as the way i've seen it is of expanding contracting like acquiring consolidating like eventually i look at my box and it's like full of cards that i've had for a few years and there's some that i'm like okay over the last three years i've kind of honed in a little more or like gotten a little more focused in a certain lane and now there's stuff that like i'm not saying these aren't good cards or like i'm not a fan like you selling off colts gold prism stuff it doesn't make you less of a colts fan or less of a prism fan it's just like alright it it was fun to have all of these at once and to have that massive volume of it but i don't know now i kind of accomplished that and maybe i want to just shrink that down into a couple big cards and then two years from now you'll probably have accumulated a bunch of other stuff and you'll maybe do that again and through that over and over you keep like adding certain cards to like this top shelf which is like mhmm what we're all doing in collecting so to the original question of does your collecting style or goals evolve based on the current state of the team i'd say right now i'm experiencing that mainly i think through team performance and also just through timing of like alright some of these cards i've had for a few years i'm okay selling or or like okay i have some finites of this player maybe i can sell the golds or like i have and not even always prism like i just i have a card that represents rex grossman do i need fifty cards of rex grossman i don't know maybe but then there's some stuff that i don't wanna sell because i know it's gonna sell for less like i'd rather have the card that's also the big play in all of this it's like would you rather have the card or the money and sometimes i look at like a card where it's like oh i'd get a hundred bucks for this but i'd rather have the card and sometimes i look at a card and i was like i can get a hundred bucks for this like i paid ten dollars for this like sure whatever i'll sell it like it's it's case by case you know there's no right answer wrong answer there no glaring example stood out to me more than so thinking about my team thinking about a player i'm really excited about after the stink fest i had to sit through there was a few bright spots one of those bright spots sauce gardner kinda he only got thrown to twice gave up one catch someone i'm really excited about and he's got his finest super fracture that's listed on ebay right now and then michael rountree shout out michael he reached out to me he sent me a picture at a showcase in dallas and his topps chrome superfractor was sitting there raw and he's like basically he was like let me know if you're interested and i looked at it i was like that is that's an amazing card but then i was like i didn't like react like let's make an offer it was just like if i it my mind went to if i do this then i and that's a whole that's a whole rabbit hole to fall down and i'm like i'm just getting out of this rabbit hole like don't do it but like my old self would have been like alright here's twenty five hundred or three thousand dollars let's make this happen so i don't know like i'm not saying like denying this is a good thing but i'm just saying like i've i've evolved as a collector right and follow the passion like you have to follow the like if sauce in week one had two pick sixes you might be might be different it just you know like it might feel real different and so then charger pc sports cards had this question which i think just pairs nicely with steelers card fellas question question for the week is it time to panic if my team laid an egg week one from a card perspective does that mean a buy a buy opportunity or okay one a buy opportunity or two sell while you can get out on the flip side your team just crushed it and you've been eyeing your favorite players cards should you one start loading up in fomo buy two wait until the player and team have a bad game to get a better deal down the road so i think we kinda hit on this a little bit in part one but this is just a little more specific strategy after this is from chargers pc sports cards i think he's maybe grappling with the chargers had a tough loss week one mhmm you know is this a buy opportunity for justin herbert is this a sell opportunity to get out for justin herbert load up i don't know any any thoughts here brett it it's yeah i think it's just about like obviously by the name chargers pc sports cards it's just about kind of what you're trying to build and what you what you wanna do i would imagine based on the handle you have a substantial chargers collection and that's your focus and i think probably now would be a really good time this week after the stink fest that you dealt with and i i can't believe justin herbert doesn't have anyone who can block any anybody like i can't believe that that's that's one comment but i would i would try it like if there's cards on your watch list like and they've got make an offer turned on and they're you know five hundred to a thousand bucks out of your price zone like i this would be a good time if you really want those cards so i just think it it like what are your goals what is your position like if you're gonna be collecting the chargers forever like now is probably a good time to to pounce on the flip side like back to what we were talking about like cards are going to be higher than ever before when your team is performing and it is emotional because the the sellers are trying to attract people like you team collectors who wanna spend money because they're fired up about their team so i don't know it's just understanding your surroundings is kind of my feedback but yeah make make the offers get the cards that's kind of my feedback you seem like you're a charter's collector so don't let one bad game get in the way of kind of your collection yeah and i i also know it's always hard to buy a card after a bet like you wanna buy something when you're excited about it but so do a lot of other people though so do a lot of other people that's very very true i do think as a team collector you can have a little bit of a edge or an advantage of you can be faster than the overall market i'm speaking like from my caleb williams experience i didn't touch any of his cards his rookie year because it was just like rookie year quarterback prospect prices but he didn't they didn't have a good rookie year they had a he had a dysfunctional rookie year even though he had pretty good numbers but into his second year they started bad his prices were he was like going cheaper than jj mccarthy like that he was like the lowest of that draft class cale williams was but then they kinda had a couple good games in a row that i as a bears fan was like that was pretty sick like his rookie year wasn't that bad i think like there's something here and was able to just like buy some cards before the overall market so i feel like right now everyone's like justin herbert he stinks even if he has like a couple good games in the coming weeks i don't think the market's gonna right away switch around and be like oh herbert herbert's a buy but i think you might feel that chargers pc sports cards if you've been you know you're watching the games you see it and are and are feeling it if you're like i think you can be a little ahead so there's no right way to time this whole thing and i hate getting into like market talk and like when to buy when to sell because it i don't know anything like literally don't know anything it could all change instantly but i think you know if there are specific cards that you've been thinking about now might be a time to make a move for it but i wouldn't just be like oh he had a bad game time to buy any justin herbert cards or any whatever charger omar and hampton cards that i can like if there's specific ones that you think will last for a lot you know are are the right move for you go for it yeah what one side question on justin herbert and we'll move on but i'm curious on your feedback we saw it with sam darnold last year right he has this first two seasons ago he has a great season in minnesota and they decide you know what we're sticking with jj let him walk and we'll let daniel jones walk so then sam darnold goes and he goes to seattle and what does he do he wins the super bowl sam darnold's like market and price and like there's there's no one like that i'm seeing that are like there's not a group of people with sam darnold cards that are like yeah sam darnold he's just he's a he's a very very solid quarterback people would say well he wouldn't be able to do this without his defense and whenever you get into this mode of with these this group of quarterbacks that have been around for a while and they're like really good players but like like jared goff is another one it's reason why i can't like get myself to buy spend the prices on these great daniel jones cards where they're just like viewed from a market perspective as middle of the road and like they can't put the team on the back they need a supporting cast so like their cards never really take off like my question is is like when does justin herbert fall into that that group because like maybe is it is it after like another season where the if they don't have see success in the playoffs because it feels like you know it's like cliffhanger like justin herbert's cards are like hanging on the cliff with one hand and they're just like we're we're we're we're we still got a few people behind us like paying these prices like when does it when when does it finally end or when does it flip like what's your perspective because he seems like a he's one of the more interesting guys like pandemic boom hobby heartthrob is what i call them and now it's just like what is there excitement for justin herbert yeah it's it's so hard to say because like i think there will i think there is just because of the name when he was drafted the cards like there's probably a lot of people who have spent a lot of money on justin herbert who will if justin herbert has like a playoff success we'll make it known and like you know you will see his cards and big sales and all of that and i mean just to i still think he's got a little bit of time because even looking at his stats like we talk about josh allen having like a peyton manning comp herbert's similar in the sense of herbert's what twenty eight years old o and three in the playoffs manning started o and three in the playoffs didn't get his first playoff win until his age twenty seven season in two thousand three so success changes everything if the chargers turn around and have a big season and herbert goes on a deep playoff run i think the narrative totally changes like it will happen fast like two i think two years ago was when the bears were on thanksgiving and ran the clock out without a time calling a time out and like eberfluss is standing on the sideline looking like an idiot like it was just like the most dysfunctional organization i've ever seen in my entire life everyone was like sell the team this is embarrassing what's going on and now two years later i'm like wait i feel good about this this is fun so it can all change on a dime even a year ago again they lost to jj mccarthy week one it was like oh same old shit like here we go again and so things can change fast if herbert balls out three weeks in a row there's gonna be like an uptick and you're gonna be like damn i should've bought that justin herbert card when he's what what what is it what did what is it against sam darnold like why isn't why doesn't no one care about sam darnold and he just won the super bowl like what is the what is the that's what i can't understand about this space i think maybe it's because herbert in my p brain thinking about it it's like alright herbert had that five thousand yard season with crazy numbers like herbert can is is like a level has like a skill level above sam darnold like again back to the like highlights versus like just consistent career numbers like herbert's made some sick throws that only a handful of guys have made i don't know if i can say that for darnold necessarily i've seen darnold make good throws and like do the right thing and put up numbers but there's not the electricity factor to a sam darnold or a jared goff even that like jared goff his numbers are like he's like the best quarterback in the league over the last five years statistically like his touchdowns yards all that i think it's like him and mahomes are like right at the and josh allen like goff is right up there but he still just doesn't seem to have i don't know what it is like is it just the like why isn't the hobby so hype on jared goff the way that they are josh allen if you had a justin herbert gold prism rookie and a sam darnold gold prism rookie and you had to own one and you had to hold you could not sell it for for ten years which card would you keep that's a great question because like i'm thinking herbert because like in my mind there's still that like what if you know he he just goes off but like darnold's the smart move because it seems like the darnold floor is probably more established but i don't know if i still think herbert has a higher ceiling both as a quarterback and in the hobby and again i'm just a guy who knows nothing i don't i don't wanna ruffle any feathers with that but that's just where my gut goes it's like herbert has more upside and i'd be if i'm having to do this hypothetical i'll be a gambling man and pick the one with more upside because i think it's to your point darnold already won a super bowl and he didn't take off or anything like that and and me personally i don't like different jerseys or i want the version of the person who won like if but then if i again if i picked herbert and he won a super bowl with another team i wouldn't like that herbert card as much so i don't know what would you pick i'm gonna pick i'm gonna pick sam darnold i know call me crazy but i'm picking sam darnold i i like i like the fact that he's already won a super bowl and i think the seahawks could go back to back they could win it again i don't think i just can't see the after i know it's don't overreact to week one but the history of what he's done in the playoffs paired with what i saw on sunday there's i have zero conviction that that team i could be eden crow but could win a super bowl this year and i'm not betting on justin herbert to win a super bowl like i would bet on josh allen to win a super bowl so i'm going i'm going just sam darnold that's what i'm doing yeah i yeah i think that is the right choice that's a that's a very very long yeah first question good job thank you steelers bart fella and chargers pc sports cards getting the wheels turning over here at football car pod next up from charm city tim i took panini for granted i have plenty of complaints about them but looking back on their fourteen year run-in licensed football there is a lot to appreciate some of the same complaints i had with panini i have with pre panini tops flair etcetera going back now and discovering hidden gems i missed before has been fun i'm looking forward to finding new lanes to collect from twenty twelve to twenty twenty five and can honestly say i'll miss them even more so if fanatics and tops drop the ball rip for now panini shout out panini they shout out panini i've spent a lot of money on panini cards yeah and like they did a great job like looking back and i agree and then you know everything looks better through rose colored lenses and twenty twenty hindsight all that but all things considered they did a great job they made a ton of great cards i think one takeaway for me in like terms thinking here and just in general it's just a reminder of how long it takes for that like cycle to happen of like nostalgia or just like being fond of something that maybe wasn't well received right away or just like for something to endear itself with collectors like it's been fourteen years since twenty twelve panini twenty twelve even though they had years prior to that but i'll just say like twenty twelve prism for example or twenty thirteen when like kabooms first came out because i keep seeing discourse online of like this is the next kaboom like there was some big anime card super factor up for sale and it's like this is gonna be the next kaboom and it's like a i'm feel like i hear that about all these new inserts that come out and b it's been thirteen years like kaboom's have been around for thirteen years like that's so long to think about really like how long thirteen years is for like kaboom to be what it is now if you think that anime super factor is eventually gonna be a kaboom but you have to wait thirteen years for it to reach that level like that's just so long and people are so impatient and so many things are gonna come out over the next thirteen years so many sets so many players and changes and all that that like i don't know i just like when people say like this will be the next thing but it's gonna require a decade it's like that's just not necessarily a way to to think about it so back to just panini i yes i agree early panini is awesome but i guess i just got a little sidetracked by this rant about things being the next kaboom the i mean it's you before the next kaboom you heard the next pmg and it just keeps on going i think only note for me on this and why i have a lot of confidence in spending a lot of money with on panini products is because so many of us returned back into the hobby at around the same time and the number one card that we were shown out of the gates was a prism something and so that nostalgia for prism will live strong in so many of us and i just there will always be an affinity and affection for panini i think the quest or for prism i think the question outside of your flawless your immaculates those like premium products i think it'll be interesting to see the storyline that i'm following like in football cards is like what are what else is there that holds up over time that collectors gravitate to like what are those like small batch releases that have one of ones that look very cool that no one's talking about now i mean you've got such a run of years and so many checklists and so many products if i had all the time in the world i would just literally research and investigate and buy get some mail days see what i like and i'd be going through that motion now but yeah a lot of years a lot of cards shout out panini for giving us a lot of good stuff along the way yes shout out panini alright next up from j a c h t x listening to the mahomes rookie versus superfractor chat i picked rookie because of the sum of everything where the rookie is still quote pretty rare however the topps chrome does have a lot going for it but i think what i got out of the comments is that people resent topps mhmm they don't like the monopoly they maybe don't like the direction they are taking the hobby they don't like the new collectors fanatics is attracting and bidding up the tops products and the frustration and that frustration spills out into your comments i thought that was a good insight i agree i feel like some of the anger within those comments is like the is at tops or at that this is a tops product and like a first year tops product means nothing this isn't a first year tops tops has been around for a long time but yeah there i can see what they're say getting at here where there is some like veiled displeasure of tops within a lot of those comments who are picking the rookie which is funny because remember when people hated panini like five years yes everyone hated panini very astute observation the only thing i'll add is that i am convinced more now than ever before of mob mentality on the comments when someone sees someone it's just like the hobby oh they're trashing the top stuff then i'm gonna trash top stuff go rookie cards but dude every dm i received i didn't receive one like pro gold vinyl dm everyone was like one of ones duh like that that was like the sentiment everywhere so it was like these two universes like the public comment section and then like privately dms it's like everyone just i i don't know what to chalk that up to because both cards are wonderful like i almost feel bad like us pitting them up against each other but there are a lot of collectors that and this has happened over the last couple years that have transitioned to be exclusive to one of ones because there are so many reasons for that and i heard from a lot of them mhmm yeah great observation good call out okay next up from t gate t k d tickets the limitless budget question missed one important outcome the football card pod museum limitless funds can purchase cards for all football card fans to see i can see it now there will be the kaboom room the one of one room and even the pat nicholson i need to get a vintage card of this old timer room what other rooms in the football card pod museum will you endow with limitless funds tkd tickets we'll we're getting your bust ready for the football card podcast hall of fame i i think we need a shining room because it gives us an opportunity to create branded football card podcast sunglasses that we can sell to all of you yeah that oh that's great call i was i love thinking about the football card pod the fcp football card museum the fcp fcm and like what the main exhibits would be what are some of the like rotating exhibits that'd be in there and then it got me thinking about the children's museum shout out the children's museum here in indianapolis great children's museum where they have the kinda like rotating exhibit rooms and like what would that take for us to get one of those rooms for a month or whatever the lease is for it to be like a history of football cards and we get you know we get some sponsors involved we get some things involved we're like we get some some vintage football like actually to curate a football card museum would be so much fun that is definitely part of what would happen if we had limitless funds would be just figuring out how to make a football card museum so we would need a lot of disinfectant to make sure that the football cards didn't give boogers all over them so people didn't get sick true yeah i don't know if the children's museum is that i'm visualizing it up there with like the tatiana exhibit exactly yeah it you there'd have to be some sort of interactive you know installments there it can't just be show and tell and learning they're like there's gotta be some sort of like here we go dude here we go this is this if i'm if i'm working at tops in fanatics and i'm listening to this what the the brand value and equity in creating an exhibit in a children's museum where you are not selling but you're educating the youth of america around why football cards rule i think the education enablement at a young age talking about stories with football cards giving a history maybe even streaming the football card podcast in the exhibit is the direction you should all be going let's educate let's enable let's inspire the next generation of football card collectors is it just imagining like competing with all the other exhibits in the children's museum where there's like amazing things fun things to do it's like you go into the football card pod room and kid puts on their headphones and pushes the button and it's ninety minutes of this but it's just it's like so boring they have no interest in it and visuals aren't even good it's just us saying that on the zoom speaking of tops though listening and taking ideas we never talked about this and i all like it came up then i forgot about it fanatics fest they did the disney draft they did a disney draft at fanatics fest did you see this do you remember did they steal our idea well we had been talking about doing a disney draft for months prior on on record and then yeah there was like a disney fan draft at fanatics fest a live event where nfl teams draft iconic disney pixar marvel and star wars characters to pair with all thirty two franchises goodell hosted it the raiders were first overall pick and they took darth vader solid pick i don't really consider him disney i get i know he is through acquisition yeah disney but yeah he doesn't feel yeah vader doesn't have a disney dude vader vader is literally destroying mickey mount vader's destroying everyone so i agree like it there's a fine line but if he's on the table i'm picking darth vader number one vader one one app dude who's stopping vader luke skywalker for starters come on come on yeah no vader is but luke actually doesn't even really stop vader i guess yeah vader kinda stops himself palpatine i guess kinda stops him but yeah i just speaking of so if someone's listening is what we're getting at at least get us involved in this next idea that you might be inspired by the football card pod and let us help curate that football is that all eight is that all we are are we just an i idea generation for mainstream hobby companies just ripping off our ideas and implementing them at the biggest shows in the world is that is that all we are at least at least throw us a bone give us yeah put us in the liner notes like let give us a shout sponsor the pod sponsor the pod the damn pod alright great questions everyone thank you for listening right nfl check-in we've got some and this is i guess a shout out to everyone who asked questions so during this season we're gonna start splitting it up we're like football card questions we just went through those and now during this quick nfl check-in if you have nfl specific questions we'll jump through some of them in this segment so from drake's bc react to nfl week one biggest surprises overreactions and then pairing with that is strong cars eighty eight said will we ever learn to not overreact so much to the opening week of the season so how are we feeling after week one brett few notes here and we'll burn through these but shout out all the giants and jacks and dart investors things might be looking up for you all shout out carson wentz getting some time making it happen three tuddies and you gotta shout out the cardinals i mean the cardinals just taking souls after everyone's just saying they're gonna be the worst team in the nfl so those are kinda three quick ones that are on my mind yeah the giants look good jackson dart looked good i was like okay this is cool but as far as overreacting it's so of course you have to you have nothing else to do like the results are the results so it's like you have week one to look at and if you like if a team plays good and you're like they're not really good you're just being a hater and if a team plays bad and you think they're still good you're a blind optimist and i think that's totally normal for fans to fall into either of those categories you yeah but you can't take it it's a long season and like week two is right around the corner we're listening to this on friday that we're already in the middle of week two and everything changes week to week so if your team laid an egg week one fear not you can always turn it around and if your team looked amazing week one it can all change i saw a great post that was like a carousel of here's what storylines were after week one of last year and like geno smith and the raiders beat the patriots jj and the vikings beat the bears there was just so many different things that ended up not even being you know a storyline throughout the season as it continued and things totally changed so even after i watched my team put up the greatest performance i've ever seen i'm still trying to maintain expectations and understand that just like seventeen and o's on the table one and sixteen is still on the table so just gotta take it a week at a time and then from cards cards cards they they just presented a take which we will read your takes if you have them just gotta submit them giants will make the playoffs with ten wins jets will be a surprise team with seven wins i'm taking a quote from angels in the outfield hey it could happen yeah i i feel like that's just a a a warm take not even a hot take like giants ten wins and make the playoffs that's the the hotter take jets winning seven i mean that they look good week one mhmm but again week one who knows the question i have for you before we move into cards is is it three or is it four weeks or is it something different when you know what you have with your team like after what week is it like this is what i'm dealing with from your perspective i think i think you've gotta be into the territory where you're seeing the in the hunt playoff picture graphics on on tv like even after four weeks things can change like what colts were what seven and o last year yeah but i'm but yeah i guess that's true yeah good point but but but if you're if you're o and four you're o it's over right o and four i think is over okay but o and four yeah o and four is you're looking up mock drafts sentence you're looking up mock drafts for next year and like alright let's think think number one pick generation number one about firing the coach in the gm yeah that's all you care about you're like mike tomlin's out there so maybe maybe maybe we're all maybe all of our stinkers were just we're just waiting for mike tomlin and that maybe that's where where you go yeah you're thinking about the future i've i've done that so many years oh yeah so many years of just okay next year who's now i'm watching tape now i care more about college football because now all of a sudden i i want maybe a prospect here prospect there dude the first thought as after i left lucas oil stadium and watched what i watched all i could think about was my my first thought wasn't like we're gonna turn this around next week it was you know mike tomlin wouldn't be that bad at coach now i'm thinking like what gm route should we go we certainly shouldn't bring in any like my my mind already went there after one week yeah oh yeah that's it i've i've been there and i'm so happy to not to finally not be there to like if the bears gave ben johnson a lifetime contract i'd be fine with it right now lifetime i would be happy to watch that man coach this team for the rest of my life i feel like it was i talked about it on this pod at some point where i'm like the concept of a coach scheming guys open is so foreign to me like i had never seen that in my entire life like every game watching the bears was like every play it felt like they were thinking alright i hope this works and now i watch this team and i'm like they know what the hell they're doing and like guys are just getting wide open and that's because ben johnson is a maniac and is like that's that's coaching like caleb i think is a great talent but there's so much that is like holy shit this offense just knows what to do and how to take advantage of mismatches and do all this fun stuff so i hope it continues i just wanna watch it all year so we'll see alright let's talk about some cards some sales yes card ladder shout out for being the official sponsor here on the football card podcast and presenting a market watch i did something along the lines of matching it with week one performances and that's how i curated the cards for today's collection of cards so first i chose and it the individual who had the most passing yards in week one and that was tyler shook me all night long with his twenty twenty five panini flawless rookie shield patch auto one of one went off the board after the performance what a good time to sell that card for thirty thousand dollars on fanatics how you doing wow i mean the houdat inscription the houdat inscription is awesome i assume this is not absolutely unworn for yeah but sweet looking card yes very good looking like cool autograph the number inscription the houdet inscription thirty k i don't even know i didn't realize he led the league in passing that's that's a lot of yards four ten they almost won yeah they took the lions to the end that's right i mean i like fully have ignored tyler shook i feel like last year it was just was like a name i'm like i don't know like nothing to get that hype about i feel like i didn't like wrote write him off or discredit him but i just didn't care and he got he had momentum at the end of the year like the fan base was like he might be the guy and then i mean i'm if i'm a say if i'm a saints fan i'm i'm feeling very optimistic about the future of tyler shook as my qb one yeah oh yeah and they they went for two in the win instead of yeah taking extra point which hell yeah you love it love to see that that is fun so shout out saints fans we got a lot of saints fans who listen to the pod and saints are a fun team so shout out tyler shook alright we move over to the player with the most passing touchdowns and that was trevor lawrence in his twenty twenty five four passing touchdowns twenty twenty five absolute kaboom horizontal gold psa tens sold for seven thousand five hundred and eighty two dollars on alt on september tenth that's these are fun cards i like the twenty twenty five kabooms we've talked about that before i like that they went back to the like cartoony style and horizontal not my favorite but sick looking card trevor lawrence good game i don't know what to i'd rather have a trevor lawrence card than justin herbert card i'll say if we're going back to our yeah i'm i think if i'm thinking about long term projections on who maybe has the best chance to win the big one and i'm not the biggest trevor lawrence fan but i think trevor lawrence is on one right now so i'm i think i'm with as much as it pains me i think i'm with you on that one yeah i think he's yeah looking a a little sharper and the jags you have jags they're good man it'd be good alright another kaboom from twenty two how about kenneth walker the third his twenty two absolute kaboom three thousand eight hundred and forty dollars this card sold on fanatics weekly which was one day before his monday night performance which might have changed the trajectory of this card but yeah i mean is was there an was there a more impressive performance in week one than kenneth walker the third like literally opening drive making a statement just handing the ball off to him every play yeah that was like kinda similar to the like mike evans move where like yeah the chiefs got a running back like whatever like i don't know for whatever reason i was never looking at kenneth walker as like a premier running back probably just because his stats aren't amazing and he's been in the league for years like not time good but yeah yeah he never had the the full shot but that week one was sick that long run that he broke for the touchdown like that pop again chiefs always playing an arrowhead for whatever reason was electric i was thinking this is awesome so shout out kenneth walker hundred and seventy three yards on the ground and seventy three yards i feel like he had yeah eighteen yards receiving so a hundred and ninety one total yards two touchdowns what a start to the season the chiefs look good that i mean they and the the broncos just look bad so not good it's one week though one week one week we move this is shout out all you loyal saints fans who listen and you're getting double saints on the market watch we got the twenty five flawless chris olave draft night jersey platinum one of one selling for nine hundred and fifty dollars on september fourteenth olave had the most receiving yards in the nfl a hundred and eighty two so tyler shook was chucking it up to chris olave so i mean you lose you go for it you lose but like you gotta love the momentum and you're like man we've got something with this pairing here so that's fun yeah another sweet card another probably not well draft night jersey i wonder if that's at least if that's from the jersey he's holding up in that picture on his draft night that's all be selling for more that is awesome nine hundred fifty bucks i would a a hundred percent try and buy that if i was a saints fan so even if yeah that's that's a cool looking card and i hope that's what it is i hope that concept is accurate but i don't know and then finally have to give defense a little love there were six players in the nfl tied at the sacks leader for two sacks and i just kinda had to pick the player with the biggest card the biggest a card that sold that like i thought would kinda pop and we could talk about it and that went i went with aidan hutchinson mhmm get two sacks in his twenty twenty two donner's optic gold vinyl downtown one of one sold for six k what is this so never mind i i totally botched that i didn't have my safe searches set up that guy was looking that thing sold in twenty four i'm like forgive me forgive me go to see our value on it has it sold again since at twelve thousand five hundred i thought that sale was a little light based on my very small knowledge of of gold vinyl queen but i'm like how did this car just sell for six k yeah as a rookie yeah with the that's a cool downtown they got that one like i like the lions the cars motor city r two d two in the back wait what looking behind the card in the image oh oh yeah i was like looking on the card yeah shout out star wars another opinion star wars card podcast star wars card podcast cool cards alright collecting updates what are the current collecting projects you're focusing your resources on any pickups i don't have a pickup but you know what i'm gonna share this with the audience right now because i have a bid in and this card will this card will be done by the time this goes live so i'm pulling up my i'm this will be i'm pulling up my watch list right now on ebay so i've got i want this card so bad because for so many reasons i'm a fan of this guy i see him regularly in real life and my father-in-law coached him to a state championship the twenty eighteen jack doyle black finite it's in a p s a ten so this card right now it's mc sports cards it's there's ten hours left on this card two hundred and fifty five dollars my bid on this card is what did i put in let's see here i love this how do i how do oh here we go i bid last night because i was this is with three kids i just did the bid in advance because i was like who knows what's gonna happen in my life if i forget about bidding if i'm like chasing kids i i've learned i can't just sit and snipe anymore i there's my life is too unpredictable so i put a lev one thousand one hundred and fifty seven dollar bid on this card there we go so if i is that a rookie it's his first it's his first prism card first prism card that's sick that's two things one here this is out for delivery only purchase i've had in the last week jordan howard twenty eighteen prism finite go hoosiers go hoosiers iu iu boy four hundred and thirty bucks for that dude i'm hoping give me that mojo on this jack doyle and this was one that i put in like i think i bid like eight hundred dollars on this what grade is it nine i'm worried about the psa ten on this i'm like some some jokers better not come in over you think i'm safe i think you're safe okay i like a hundred percent i think you're safe because when again i put in that bid and when it ended at four thirty i was like wait really like let's go that's awesome very pumped about congrats dude but the yeah not being able to snipe i cannot snipe any i don't have no i fall asleep on the couch dude i'm a bum i forget i straight up forget i'll be like sitting around like alright this auction's ending i get to like fourteen minute warning i'm sitting there waiting and it could have three minutes left and i can't just sit there for three minutes watching it i like open another tab or do something else and then i'll tracked it all of a sudden my heart drops i'm like what and i run back and it's sold like that happens more than i have to admit dude that's why i had to give up the sniping and i said to myself last night what would i be willing to pay for this card and the price i'm willing to pay for this card is one thousand one hundred and fifty seven dollars so if it got chilled up like there's this anxiety around the shilling but i'm like if someone's shilling up a jack doyle black finite card like there's a whole another problem here but yeah that's what i'm willing i'm willing to take the money out of my account and hand that to you for that card so that's just what i'm bidding because the thought of my kid waking up me falling asleep on the couch me having to go to the bat it's it's like the possibility of me not bidding on this card are higher than bidding on this card so last night i was like i better just bid on this now yeah and it helps to have the like honest conversation with yourself how much do i wanna spend on this card yeah it's the best dude and like okay yeah and then you work with yourself a bit like okay five hundred dollars it's like no i'd i'd go six hundred like you have that with yourself before it's in the heat of the moment on the battlefield bidding at the last second like if you have that battle with yourself preparation then you go out there and just put in that number and just be content with if you get it you get it and if not like hey it wasn't meant to be it was higher than what you wanted to pay based on your research and preparation so yeah i'm all for the some stuff i i like to snipe there's still some things but i don't know at at a certain point for a card like that just get your number in and go and what i'm hoping happens or not hoping but what is plausible is that one of my kids will wake up and i'll have to go try to calm them down get them to bed and i'll come down and i'll look at the notification back oh it's done did i win and like you get that moment of like did i win this it's the best great pickups couple eighteen finites that's funny mine's out for delivery so i don't like talking about it before they arrive anymore but i'm hoping that i just realized dude i just realized i could pair this with my with my andrew luck gosh and they're buddies too man like you get increased that max bid a little bit i hope i don't have to i hope this is the last time i think about this card until it ends yeah you've you'll be fine you're get like i don't think do you think the psa ten for finite really matters that like increases it that much i think it i think it definitely i think it does i think i'm i'm scared of the psa tens the psa tens have me frightened across all of my collecting because in in going through this process where i you know sold all these cards it's like if you have a psa ten there no matter if it's a gold gold vinyl like one of one like it always carries a premium always does so and you might be in luck where people know that you've sold you you're selling cold stuff they might think this is your card that you're selling i got a i got a message about that i got a couple messages saying hey i apologize if this is your card but i wanted to share it with you and i was like as a matter of fact like thank you thank you for sharing this with me because i had not seen it and i i i had just sold the twenty eighteen gold engel vinyl jack doyle and this is the card i want yeah it's like someone like saw those sales or whatever and they're like well i might as well sell this one it's like thank you because this is the card i want i want this one no i saw it it already had like ten or fifteen watchers so i didn't i was like i know brett's seen this either it's his or but then i remembered like the jack doyle connection i'm like no i bet i bet he wants this one i do i want it very bad now that yes so again like i wanna act like i'm not i wanna forget that this is even happening because i don't wanna get into the perspective where i'm like creating manufactured thoughts in my mind and i'm like having to increase the bid i feel like i got a number i'm gonna stick to it if i don't win it i just gotta move on yeah and knowing if you don't win that whoever wins it like you'll it'll end up with you eventually i think so you'll you'll win that wow okay next up alright not next up card call out's up or close it out j a c h t x had this nice little suggestion for card call out he said suggestion for callout maybe can be cards that aren't very expensive but collectors and listeners would not sell it for a thousand dollars everyone is posting their supers and that is cool but maybe leaves a lot of people out and what makes collecting cool is just finding cards you like not necessarily what a market thinks is valuable so i like this i like this idea of like what's a card you have that is not high market value that you wouldn't sell even for a thousand dollars so maybe a card that you like market val i have like kinda got to this earlier like i have a rex grossman card that i wouldn't sell for a thousand dollars that's probably worth a hundred bucks just because it's like that's that is my rex grossman card for the rex representation in my collection so yeah a card that you have lot of sentimental value not a high market value may maybe it doesn't should we keep that thousand dollar threshold in there like that's i guess it's kinda subjective but yeah they're well we'll we'll keep it yeah you wouldn't sell it for a thousand dollars so good call out suggestion thank you for that everyone else give us your call out suggestions that's a great thing we would love i would love to outsource the card call outs we're sixty five episodes in it's getting tough to think of them sometimes and also a reminder in the pick them lead get your picks in because those picks lock shoot thursday so actually if you're listening to this hope you got those picks in because there's it's locked we'll post something on our story to remind people to get your picks in because it's all about everyone has to get their picks in so it stays competitive you know it's it's never fun in a fantasy league when someone's not setting their lineup but if you don't bring it every week i guess that's your fault and you're gonna fall down to the bottom while others take take over extra last thing for me i'm still awaiting the foot listening to the football card podcast while pigging out watching football i need to see the spread all the the desserts the snacks like are you having a party
