have you got had a chance to like examine the the week one slate yet yeah i got my picks in it's tough oh you've already so how about the fact that we've got you know we're not starting on thursday anymore no no no no no we're starting on wednesday so we've got the pats and seahawks on wednesday and we've got on thursday the forty niners rams with miles garrett and aaron donald prayers for brock purdy or is brock purdy going to be stoic and that dude that that that might be one of the most intriguing matchups of the week if brock purdy can go into la and win that game we've our we've got a i'm set we got a front runner for mp already because everyone's picking the rams to win the super bowl so that game will be fun but yeah man this i haven't really looked at it i'm looking at it now but i'm excited to dig in we won't spend the time maybe this episode talking about the slate but next week i think we should like get into the weeds a little bit on some of these games because there's some fun ones oh yeah i cannot wait for football week one is week one is like so special too the you know they celebrate opening day in baseball and that's a big thing week one in the nfl season is unlike anything else because you you you turn on your tv or you walk into that stadium with the highest optimism of the of the year so for so long the colts were on the road for week one in the last two years we've we have week one home game so there's nothing better than a week one home game going to the game there's just a special energy in the air the colt oh and the colts won last year because they started yeah we we broke that streak yeah that they weren't winning home or week one for a while but yeah that's i'm looking at the schedule i'm getting hyped yeah having a wednesday game and a thursday game give me football every single day every day every day my my i probably would my wife probably would we maybe never see we it's hard to see each other now as we're both parenting three small children and you know if she came down after she got done every night and i was watching football every night she'd be heading to the basement probably to watch a show on netflix we may never see each other so maybe that's good for the marriage that football is not every night yes that's true can't wait yeah we're recording this on wednesday one week from today we'll be watching football so that is awesome can't wait can i get an early maybe an early one one game an early pick for you oh and i and we're gonna do the game that's a week from today that we record that patriots that's the super bowl rematch the new england patriots heading into seattle to take on the defending reigning super bowl champs seattle seahawks i mean i think seahawks even though that's not the sexy pick that's just going kinda chalk at home they're better i think so i don't know yeah i'll just pick patriots then patriots are gonna go in there and shock them oh that's i love what you did there i i'll take the i'll take the chalk i'll take seattle but i think it's gonna be a a hell of a hell of a game but yeah we're we'll we'll get into this more i've got man i've got energy we're talking about real games this is fun i know and if only there was a way to like track these predictions in a you know some sort of league where we could compete against each other there is the football card pod pick them late get in there sign up today alright i have before we get into the numbers i have an opening topic and it kinda came from last week and when i put the opening topic the a little how the sausage is made john sends me a format and i kind of get in and think about like what do we wanna kick this episode off with this week and i sometimes think about last episode and there's a topic from last episode and i put it into the opening topic for this week and then i was getting into like mail back and saw that there's a question and the purse the question asker really was the person that maybe inspired this this topic so we're gonna get into it and maybe i'll just leave the the reveal until we get to the mailbag but the question is what decides a player's defining card i did not think this topic was is controversial as some of the reaction i got but the lt conversation we had last week really started to maybe i don't wouldn't say ruffle some feathers but garner some sort of reaction so i think this is an interesting topic and i think it's an interesting topic because it is so easy in some with some players to just look at a card and be like this is that player's like card you know i think with a player like brady you go to you know his his bowman or you go to his rookie ticket just because these cards have become popularized through a long sales history they are put everywhere you see them everywhere they're highly liquid but i don't think that's always like what causes the card to be defining so i just thought it might be a fun topic to to get this episode going and how do you think about this like who decides a player's defining card how do we decide a player's defining card yeah i i love thinking about this topic because to me it comes back to the the word best and how that gets just thrown around the hobby all the time like what is someone's best card and yeah it like it what does the best card mean is it always the most valuable is it always the most rare is it a combination of both and like best card could be different from most recognizable card like ken griffey junior for example baseball card podcast here for a second eighty nine upper deck is one of the most recognizable sports cards of all time ken griffey's rookie card but what's his best card is it from gem masters from a metal set you know like it's i think it just gets it's not as clear what his best card is but the most recognizable card that's pretty obvious and then it just got me thinking like if you were a card would you rather be the upper deck rookie or the like a ninety eight gem masters would you rather be this blockbuster hit or like this niche art house movie like you know like there's different appeals i think for like both of those types of cards and yeah just like interesting to like like and coming back to lt i think the conversation we were having is i don't think there's necessarily a clear answer for like what ladany and tomlinson's best card is the way that if you come to a more modern player and you say what is patrick mahomes best card and it's like okay it's probably his finite or his like shield auto like you you kinda right away get two contenders that are up there and for basketball similar things like okay logoman auto or this super rare chromium one of one but some players and then especially in the the pre one of one era the the quote unquote best card becomes harder to define so i don't know if i i don't really have necessarily a good answer there but just some thoughts of it's just always funny when and then i think what rubs people the wrong way is when people determine something or like say it's the best card with like too much conviction like it's oh yeah you know it's because it's all it's all personal still at the end of the day it all there is no like you know official best card for any of this it all is still opinion based at the end of the day usually for me when it is the card that is the most popular or seen or prolific it's the card i care about the least because i don't wanna hear about it because i've seen it too much because it's transacted so many times and it's i wrestle with this because i'm like is this card considered the best because there's multiple copies and there's multiple stakeholders who are going to advocate for this card because they own a copy of this card my default always is when i'm thinking about whatever's best it's based on my system and based on my system i rate the rarity and scarcity of an item very very high as opposed to maybe a lot of other elements that make up defining cards so that's something i think about back to your kinda art house what would i rather be would i rather be like the eighty nine griffey where like you know i have a bunch of buddies a bunch of relatable you know friends that we can you know chat about you know maybe i'd my psa ten and we're like yeah let's not even spend any time with these psa nines there's way too many of them and we're like an exclusive club although big can probably fill up a stadium we're an exclusive club here or a gym masters i'd rather be the gym masters because i have one owner who's protecting me taking care of me you know he's got me in a nice little place little cozy spot pulling pulling me out and spending that one on one time with me it's kinda like how i think about like toy story and you know the the the the woody of it all it's like andy was just it all about woody man that was his guy and so like i just think about those cards those one of ones they get those special treatment so i'd rather be less exposed but be great like a awesome art house indie flick i love that but then i'm thinking okay this griffey gem master is you know up on a shelf by itself just isolated just staring at the zion case opening and closing with this frenzy of activity every time the lid opens it's a party in there it's like oh hey i'm stuck up here i'm you know isolated i'm kept away from the streets from from all my friends and my peers i'm i'm growing up warped you know it's like a homeschooled kid their entire life like through college homeschool it's like what are you doing no three dog night did say that one is the loneliest number they they that is there's a whole entire song about that but i don't know like the psychology around collecting objects the more and more i do this the more and more i want stuff that nobody else can have and i know i'm speaking for myself i'm not speaking for the card but as a collector that's why i tend to try to value rarity and scarcity a little higher when it comes to who who defines this i think we all define it and i think there's conflict because our opinions aren't the same as other people this is a good operating system i take to the internet is that i i recognize my position in the way i believe things in the way i think about cards where i think about collecting is likely very different from everyone else and i try to appreciate everyone else's perspective and be open when you're not open that's where you'd see a bunch of in instagram stories back and forth of people bickering and fighting about cards and that sort of thing so that's kinda my operating system when it comes to stuff like this right and back to like it all is built still on like personal knowledge personal preference i was listening to chris hoge on hoops collector's podcast shout out max bottom cards great listen chris hoag chris hoag talking about cards by the way is just it's like watching an artist at work or listening to an artist at work the way he's able to articulate his points and talk about cards i feel dumber when i get on here talking about cards after listening to a master class that is chris hoag i was thinking like if if chris hoag talking about sports cards if he's like a monet i feel like i'm more of a the artist that made the illustrations on big dogs t shirts you know just kinda shout out big dogs shout out big dogs t shirts we may get some big dogs shirts up in the mix for the football card pod but yeah give it a listen it's awesome and but it got me thinking he talks a lot about art and how art like practices of like art appreciation with cards and like i me personally i look at art totally different than a museum curator would because the gap in our knowledge of that craft is like so vast you know like we could look at the exact same painting and we're seeing wildly different things because of the differences in knowledge and understanding of the subject of the subject matter of history of everything so back to like what card is the best it's like interesting to me to always think about if you took someone who knows nothing about cards and you laid out ten different griffey cards and like the upper decks in there and the gem masters is in there like what what would jump out to them as like the best card and like what that practice would show is just how the quote unquote best is really just so influenced by what you know about this history of these products and the all the different nuance that goes into these individual products so i don't know just something there with how yeah we perceive different things based on what we know your big dog reference had me immediately think about and this is a shout out to my brother at mcgrath cards because he he he was a prolific buyer of this apparel do you remember the no fear brand in the nineties yeah of course dude i need to buy some no fear gear and start rocking it on the football card podcast maybe hit some bugle boy jeans mhmm no fear and get some and one back in the mix with the face faceless silver silver surfer guy oh man mar dude and one had its moment the mixtape marbury all of the skip to my lou the mixtapes were like i mean that was like pre like proliferation of video content on the internet and getting your hands on some man one mixtapes was like you just cancel everything just sit in front of it and watch it for days you you were seeing things you never saw before oh my god hot sauce hot hot sauce should be in the league could still be in the league right now what about the what about the professor coming onto the scene man professor escalade was it escalade mark jackson's brother i don't know but i i think so i believe it that's awesome and yeah rafer alston skipped to my loo made it through the league hit something he did did he win a title or no maybe he was just on the magic team that went to the finals but and one basketball card podcast and one basketball card pod see this this could open up a whole lane of collecting right there it's just getting those and one guys yeah someone show me your and one cards we'll make an exception on the football card pod story this week if you have any and one player cards post them we we might re repost them yeah good good opening topic i don't know if we came away with a we didn't or anything we're gonna revisit it in the mailbag a little bit though that's true yeah it it comes back up last thing on the pick'em league i wrote this down and it's worth sharing pick'em league we need a hundred people imagine not being part of the first one hundred and the fact that there's thirty right now if you join now you are still part of the gold refractor club so you know first fifty gold refractors so you got we got twenty more gold refractors out there you don't wanna well now i don't wanna disparage you know what would like fifty one to a hundred be what's a parallel that goes up to a hundred or up to ninety nine like a green scope like a platinum medallion a platinum medallion there we go that's a good one yeah so if you're not a gold refractor you're a platinum medallion but the point is get in get in soon it's actually first one fifty could still be pmgs see that's right pmgs are so common they're just they're everywhere but but there's but there's but there's only so many in circulation that's always what is that that's always the defense yeah they're numbered to one fifty but there's not really a hundred and fifty copies there that's it that's the point right there i'm gonna start saying that just about any card about anything this is number to ten but there's not really ten copies yeah you look at the pop report there's only three there and i've been collecting this stuff forever and i've never seen another copy so there's actually only three copies but there really are only thirty people in the pick'em league and those are those are the rarest that we've seen so join the team get in the pick'em league episode sixty three shout out us sixty three weeks straight no days off lot of hall of famers i think sixty three is maybe the loaded most loaded big ugly autumn number we've got darmonte dawson willie lanier mike munchik leroy selman dick stanfill gene upshaw and you tittle there's a lot to unpack here a lot of those guys are all just like legendary all pro guards willie lanier chiefs linebacker defensive player of the year at one point i believe i wanted to talk about youtittle though can can i share something real quick because you mentioned mentioned a name i have not thought about in forever and that's jermaine dawson i had growing up a childhood wall every starting lineup known to mankind on my wall with thumbtacks and it just triggered i had to pull this up look at this nineteen ninety nine jermaine dawson starting lineup with in this in the snap pose man that is unreal it was good six time first team all pro ninety three to ninety eight seven time pro bowler all decades team hall of famer hundred and eighty one starts just kind of a beast of a football player hell yeah okay ya tittle y a tittle there's some some things to unpack here first off y a tittle what a name yelburton abraham tittle junior yelburton awesome name i don't know why you'd go by y a when you got gil gil burton sitting there in the chamber let that go don't don't don't shortcut yourself you he was a quarterback hall of fame quarterback for the baltimore colts san francisco forty niners and the new york giants mainly the niners from fifty one to sixty he won an mvp though for the giants in sixty three he was a three time first team all pro three time nfl passing touchdowns leader two time completion percentage leader in the hall of fame he has tied for the nfl record of seven touchdown passes in a game he where is it the one thing that jumped out to me though when reading through his wikipedia is well i guess there's two things one is when he was like drafted by the lions in the forty eight draft however he then signed with the browns of the all american football conference to back up otto graham which was supposed to be his last season but then the aafc commissioner in an effort to increase the balance took several players from the browns including tittle and from the new york yankees which was a football team at the time and sent them to the baltimore colts to begin just to kinda like make this team and i was just thinking of how far we've come with like players rights and like league rule like can you imagine if goodell was like alright we're just gonna take five players from each of these teams and make a team i mean i know we kinda did that i guess with the texans the expansion team but that wasn't like forcefully removing players from teams there was some decision making there but so wyatt teddle is having this great career but you gotta hear about this one incident that happened that if it happened anywhere else he would not like i don't think he'd be regarded as this hall of fame quarterback so in tittle's day he played offense and defense while during a loss to ole miss so this is in college tittle's belt buckle was torn off as he intercepted a pass from charles connerly and broke a tackle he ran down the sideline with one arm cradling the ball and the other holding up his pants at the ole miss twenty yard line as he attempted to stiff arm a defender tittle's pants fell and he tripped and fell onto his face and the fall kept him from scoring the game winning touchdown can you imagine if there's a view of that he would have never recovered tittle would have never recovered and gone on to have a pro football hall of fame career he would have been cooked done roasted chopped all the things if there was a video of him running down the field and his pants fall down and he tripped over his pants and fell on his face i never thought i could relate with you tittle until this moment where you tittle and his historic career was saved because there was no video evidence of this incident whereas the proliferation of the iphone had not really happened when i was being an idiot in college so i'm thankful that videos weren't being shot in reels and tiktoks everywhere i'm glad i'm not in college now to avoid that and i'm sure youtittle is grateful that video evidence wasn't there of his big fall yeah that's i mean like just look at mark sanchez but then it got me thinking like it's crazy that mark sanchez getting beat up by like an eighty year old guy and stabbed isn't the most embarrassing thing caught on video of mark sanchez's life because of the buff fumble that's how bad the buff fumble is but yeah for the buff fumble to you know that's what everyone thinks of when they think of mark sanchez youtittle's pants falling down and tripping onto his face is just i would have loved to see that shout out you tittle anything else you wanna add there before i move on to mine no just a lot of lot of great sixty threes there in the trenches that are hall of famers who do you who do you got i'm going serving some hometown cooking here and i wanna talk about the former interim head coach of the indianapolis colts and that's jeff saturday oh yeah still can't believe that happened but i don't wanna talk about saturday's coaching i wanna talk about saturday's career center connected directly at the hip with eighteen peyton manning super bowl champion two time first team all pro he is in the colts ring of honor a true jim ursay guy jim ursay loved them jeff saturday just a staple in institution i'll also say like i tried to like find a jeff saturday card to talk about but there weren't a lot of jeff saturday cards and most of the jeff saturday cards that exist are post playing day cards and they're like dual autos with peyton manning so not a prolific catalog if you're a jeff saturday collector but i gotta talk about the defining moment that most all of us have seen because we've seen the clip roll back over and over again when the colts were playing the rams and they're all the way down in the red zone getting ready to score and must have been tom moore at the time called three pass plays in a row and they didn't score and then they get to the sideline and saturday's bitching up a storm about why they didn't just run the ball and manning is like the most hot headed moment of manning's career and the quote of the century is just when he looks at saturday he says quit call of the place and just block and it's just like what a way to just put jeff saturday at his place and let him know you are jeff saturday you are good but i am peyton manning so just just shut the fuck shut the heck up it just blocked isn't that when who is it tariq glenn gets his he's the mediator he's like i'm cool peyton's like i'm cool i'm cool like they just suck him up exactly yeah that's all time peyton mic'd up moment up there with damn it donald damn it donald is yes there's some good peyton manning clips out there yeah shout out jeff saturday and there was that moment when he became head coach didn't did they get hot did they win at all or they were they they dude they they won their first game against the raiders but the they lost the rest of them and the the classic loss was just them being up by thirty something points in minnesota and oh okay letting in the second half the vikings just come back and win the game it was like if it was like pouring salt on the wounds of the season for sure yeah that's right that's right but yeah shout out jeff saturday all time moment to the pro bowl switching sides to give peyton the snap when saturday was on yes when saturday was on the packers that's right alright sixty three we got some questions let's get into it first up from drake's pc the nfl season begins next week what a great sense who wins each division and who takes the afc nfc and who wins the super bowl asking for next year yeah so i i'm gonna rewind the tape last year my i remember my super bowl prediction on the football card podcast was the packers and the bills so that that was that was definitely wrong and going through this exercise it was certainly challenging some easier than not but i'm not sure outside of maybe a couple that i had a like there's no way this team doesn't win the division so i'll read mine off real quick the east maybe the east was certainly my yeah i think it was still easier than most i i just i went with buffalo i just i mean i just i like i like the dj moore edition i i mean i like josh allen obviously just go with the bills so west was very very challenging it's always close i i ty goes to the runner and ty goes to the super bowl champ so i went with chiefs the north was impossible as well i just i had steelers and i think the bengals will be obviously back and good but i just don't trust their defense yet i had steelers but i i swapped it out for the ravens at the end the colts for the south i mean i know i'm i had just have to i mean i wouldn't be able to live my with myself the east i picked the cowboys and i know i'm going to regret it it was this was one i i had the eagles and i was like i got i'm gonna pick the cowboys but i'm gonna regret it the west the rams the north was very hard i because you're a cohost i i decided to go with the bears that you were the tie goes to the cohost on this one i it was hard but it was bears and packers like i just kept fighting back and forth but sided with bears the south was a coin flip i went with the buccaneers because i don't know i just want the buccaneers that one night was less defined and then super bowl champs i'm go i'm going back to the well i'm i'm i'm good i think i'm gonna keep going back to the well until it happens i'm picking the buffalo bills there we go yeah i kinda just flew through this i'm not one to do predictions and if i am it's gonna be weekly in the footballcard pod pick'em league i went i went with bills ravens sorry i went texans all good i think the texans are are good chiefs bears of course i'm going giants i think the a f the or that nfc east i feel like isn't it the the division winner is different every year it's always getting mixed up harbaugh let's see if he can do it rams and panthers defending champs of the division they'll run it back i mean rams over bills is like such the easy chalk very easy yeah projection but i think i'm gonna i'll i'll go with that for now until i see until the season starts unfolding but right now it's hard not to pick the rams we haven't even we haven't talked about aaron donald yet i don't know if we need to talk about it much but depending on how he looks coming back that just has the potential to be a very very scary team but it also does remind me of when we were talking about like the eagles dream team where it's like these teams that get all that hype and like add all these pieces together can we've seen many times it not work out so it'll be an interesting exercise to see here i'm a big sean mcvay guy so i think he can hold it all together and he's really good at probably setting those expectations i have no doubt aaron donald will be very good it's you just got you have a long season you have a reigning mvp who's getting older at quarterback can they can they go the distance that is the question yeah also i i don't know what the deal is everyone thinks matthew stafford regression like i had two fantasy drafts matthew stafford's like not getting drafted or he's fallen to like the tenth round i'm like this guy just won mvp with forty six touchdowns what are we doing here crazy i know he's old but the guy is getting you three touchdowns a game so i have matthew stafford in two leagues because he's sitting right there next up from mostly soccer cards can we get some full back love on the pod favorite fullbacks and full back cards other than the obvious mike allstadt all star tony richardson peyton hillis lorenzo neal la'ron mcclain i feel like we've given a lot of love to fullbacks on the football card pod we've i don't know if we've had many numbers that have lined up with fullbacks yet well all start we had lots of all start love and and lorenzo neal has had definitely a moment on this pod but how'd you take this brett i feel yeah maybe i the it's a it's a the position is going extinct you've got use check i feel like he's the one guy that you can think of who's like impact player nowadays mhmm i need his wife to make me a sick custom colts jacket i wonder what she commissions those for but i mean football card podcast mvp bronco nagurski he played fullback right yep yeah but the when i saw the list great callouts all start and those were great the one that i felt like was missing was larry centers like larry centers man he just he was that's a nineties football guy if i ever saw one so i went back and looked at larry center's career and it was great so shout out all you larry centers player collectors out there yeah i i took a chance to i was like who's a fullback i remember that isn't part of this list and corey schlesinger who he signed for the lions he was always i feel like a thing during broadcast where they would talk about how many face masks he had broken in his career because he was always just running straight into people face first breaking face masks just a vicious blocker kind of like a a young cam skatebo like maybe with just a relentless relentless drive and no fear of cte just willing to just bash your face in to get that extra yard so i think corey schlesinger walked so camp scadaboo could run or corey schlesinger blocked so camp could run we'll say that by the way did you i didn't quite do connect the dots until now but that giants division pick how much jackson dart are you holding over there yeah wow if i just had i've been buying all the dart just just for this year yeah i kinda forgot that that pick also depends on jackson dart i was i i just have faith in harbaugh like i just feel like he could come in and win ten games and in that division i think it can get that can win the division i don't know i don't know how much that's fair yeah but i guess yeah dart dart is a big factor in that unless dart gets hurt and it's jameis time baby just give me jameis and harbaugh i think they could make some magic they can win ten games i believe that alright next up from jay in houston it doesn't mean much but i'll give you a thought to agree or disagree with topps has and will be onboarding new collectors at rates the hobby has never seen tops is finding ways to reach existing and new collectors in ways other companies have never done and at the same time over the next three years panini will be making off brand unlicensed products what we think of panini today will change the collectors who started with panini products may be more sticky but more and more of the hobby will have been onboarded by tops so although cards like prism rookies and short prints will always be relevant i wonder about their case hits once tops figures out super short prints i think they could consume all the air that downtowns and uptowns and those cards have right now i thought this was really interesting we've kinda touched on this before too of just this this new era and like what how people will view panini moving forward but yeah what did what did you think of this i i think it's a really good thought exercise and it's very interesting to go down the different paths you can when you're thinking about cases and panini and the way i think about this is eventually when cards that have a high supply like eventually i think they will go out of style if there aren't enough collectors to support those cards or who actually want to keep those cards and i think we're gonna see that probably a lot with some of these panini k sets i will say i think probably the most protected would be the kaboom even like the base kaboom's that are higher population are likely probably okay because they have such a strong brand identity there there has not been any case hits really that i have seen and probably part of this is the serial numbering of the kabooms and the golds and then you know the one of ones that has really helped connect the liquidity and the flipper side with the collector side and i think there's an agreement there is a there is a connection point between flippers thinking about kabooms and collectors thinking about kabooms and there's like a bridge there and i think to me likely you're not gonna remember everything twenty years from now but i think the kaboom is probably going to hold up and now i don't know what that means from a value perspective but i think just from a demand perspective i think everyone will always want kabooms just because the splash was too big the brand was has been too strong and recognized and there are versions of those cards that are rare and scarce yeah that that's a very good call i think i i was more interested thinking about if we go ten years like from this point on ten years straight of panini pumping out unlicensed products does that start to hurt prime panini products does like panini or this like new wave of collectors start to take on this like leaf personality or something and like would that negatively affect previous products and i don't i don't think it necessarily would it's just to me interesting to think about but or like would it be better if panini just ceased to operate you know rather burn out or fade away type argument like it was funny to see the other day russell westbrook announces his retirement and then i feel like all i saw was everyone loving on russell westbrook that's right immediately and it was like man people hated on russ for the last forever six seven years of his career and there's just something about like once the career is finalized like the perception instantly changes to like looking at it in retrospect versus like looking at it in real time and like critiquing what they should or shouldn't be doing and not kind of thinking about that with a brand like panini if you know if they just are releasing cruddy products for the next ten years does that hurt them but then at the same time we've seen cycles like this happen a mill not a million times but many many times over over the last hundred years in this industry where there are brands that no longer exist or brands that lost licenses and then continued and just the cards that were made at a specific point in time that capture a specific era a specific player like those will always be collectible and will always be desired by collectors so to go back to the question where i guess he's just specifically talking more about case hits i i don't think like a new product in twenty twenty five is really gonna make some case hit from like twenty fifteen obsolete because i think there'll still be people who wanna collect cards of a player from like that era of twenty fifteen and like that they will still find that panini case hit so i i don't know if they're necessarily connected in that way but i don't know interesting interesting topic to think about if i if i were on the executive team at panini right now i probably i'd be dude i'd be sourcing so many ips i'd be like i'd be like let's put the sports thing on the back burner and let's just get creative like we've got these brands we've got prizm we've got these case hits like let's have some fun like i think that there's a that's what i would be pit every meeting they'd probably fire me every meeting i'd be like i'd start with like let's not talk about sports here let's talk about the simpsons let's talk about you know what i mean like that's cut that would be in that like let's go nostalgia let's go like yo mtv raps prism like let's let's do this that's what i'd be about yeah i mean they've got rolling stones prism i know didn't do didn't do very well but i don't think it was marketed right i don't think it was marketed right and i feel like there was like a hundred black finites of like different or at least my saved searches said so but yeah no a hundred percent aligned i think that they go for other ips that aren't just you don't no one wants the unlicensed basketball card of a player even though it's panini and then i think i saw somewhere though there was man this is terrible radio but they they made a kaboom of like some character there was some cartoon character that i saw a kaboom of i it could have been ai who knows never mind disregard all of this but i know i saw somewhere that like they were cranking out some new type of kaboom set so what do you what do you think about what do you think about the the cross promotion of and the of like the a movie like minions and putting the minions guys in cards and it's like strategic around the launch of the movie but then the the in the the market is saying oh these are the the these are sps so let's like say these are really valuable and sell them for high like do you think there's a play there where like topps is collaborating with entertainment companies to produce cards like this and put them in packs like are you for this or do you you against it or do you not really care do you know what i'm talking about yeah yeah i feel like that's hasn't like always happened but there's that's always going to exist within the marketplace i'm thinking of jay z when he was in all those top sets because he was like our owner of the nets and like was able to get in there that way and i'm sure there are other like inserts and other promotional cards that have been tied around other like pop culture ips that have happened yeah the minion thing i don't get it like the the price you need a kareem abdul jabbar minions card yes that's what my collection needs but it is i don't know it's crazy right now and with like disney in general it's crazy right now like those prices are absolutely insane so i'm sure the minion hype is kind of there's some connection there where people want disney cards they want a minions card they want these rare cards of other types of characters it's definitely and like that's always been there and that's always had moments but like i remember this in twenty twenty two i was buying jay z cards because i was like oh not like i've always had a interest in non sports collectibles too and yeah it just i don't know it'll it'll come and it'll go the it also makes me think of may nineteenth and kane like in every in every everything we have nothing is sacred in wrestling all of a sudden some storyline turns out to be a release of a movie a movie release date and in cards all of a sudden your new case hit insert is actually promotion for a new movie so you're all we're all you're always being fed an ad no matter what you're listening to you're listening to the football card pod right now and we're telling you to go join pick'em like everyone's trying to get you to do something all the time it's up to you to just do whatever you think is best and what you think is best should be joining the pro football card pick'em that's right on the the kane front and then we can move on yes it was promotional but we did get finger eleven slow chemical as his new theme song which turns out to be probably the best modified version of an original wrestling theme song turned into a new new theme song in pro wrestling history i don't know if i i i can't recognize that song or i can't think all all i can think of is the classic kane music intro that's it it's that but with like a crappy like new metal band like with lyrics backing it but it's actually like perfect for wrestling okay i'm a i'll listen to that right after this call okay next up from bolt card crew and this is kinda gonna take us back full circle he says how is it possible for a non rookie card to be a player's quote best card shout out bolt card crew for the inspiration behind the opening topic and we kinda greased the skids a little bit i think the answer to your question first of all let me back up a second the there's a the rookie card narrative is the deepest cut that we have in the hobby there somewhere someplace there was a decision by the powers that be that said rookie cards or bust rookie cards are the cards i remember getting back into the hobby and that was the push and then i started to learn about cards and i'm like why would i want this card when there's two thousand graded copies as opposed to like this second year card that has five copies and so as someone who appreciates rarity and scarcity i always kinda pushed against the grain a little bit to answer the question it's very possible for a rookie card to not be the best card when the catalog of the rookie cards are very stinky like there are stinky years where there's just not great rookie cards there's not rare and scarce rookie cards and so i think i don't wanna project because i think it's all personal taste but how you measure it is entirely up to you for me i value rarity i value scarcity and i think over a high population more recognizable card for what it's worth i will say this i will always side with the rookie card if the rarity and scarcity matches it so for instance there's no way i'm gonna say the super bowl year first super bowl year black finite of patrick mahomes is better than his rookie year black finite that's just i i would never say that i would lean towards the rookie year so that's kinda how i think about an individual player's best cards most important note it's personal taste mhmm and i i mean i think it's interesting again to kinda think about like why why rookie cards in the first place got got to this point and it was because that was a way to set themselves apart from every other card from someone else like again before serial numbers before inserts even it was just i wanna collect this player okay what's where's the direction to go it's like alright their first card like their rookie card like that was direction and even back in like the nineties it seems like if you had to ask a kid like what they wanted would you want the griffey upper deck rookie or griffey gem masters i bet they'd be like the upper deck rookie because they didn't know what the gem masters was and their friends don't know what it did like yeah it looks cool and oh it has a serial number on it but like everyone recognizes the upper deck and i want the one that everyone recognizes and so they're i understand why rookie cards are are what they are and why why they are desired but i don't think like to answer the question where he's saying how is it possible for a non rookie to be the best card like there's not one clear answer because like the hobby kinda dictates that personal preference dictates that with if two people are willing to spend a lot of money on a card that's what can determine you know what card is the most valuable or what card's quote unquote the best or most important so i don't know i've the the answer that kept floating in my mind is it just does from joe dirt how exactly is a rainbow made it just does joe dirt's a classic yeah i think this is this has been the topic of the episode so it's interesting there's no definitive answer but it's good to have conversation around it yep alright great questions everybody thank you very much as always should we keep it moving let's get into nfl check-in and then we'll get into some sales anything on your mind as the season rapidly approaches there sure is i'm trying to plan and prepare knowing i'll be going to a lot of games knowing i'll be at home watching a lot of games and the question i wanted to present back to you because you're in a position like me as a father the navigation of an nfl sunday when you have kids what is the sustainable strategy to survive an entire nfl season with children and responsibilities present nfl goes all day all i wanna do is sit and watch nfl all day but there's competing priorities so i wanted to pitch it to you to see how do you handle this like what's your strategy like i'm sure there's other dads out there who have thought about this and are trying to figure it out themselves so spend a little time here on this topic yes great topic it's it's gonna be a new season in the sense my daughter turns three like tomorrow so she'll be three by the time this is out different than last year where she wasn't she was moving around but like she was more ploppable it could be i could be watching the game and she could just be like kinda dawdling around doing whatever whereas now i feel like she could have strong opinions of like i don't wanna watch this game or like i wanna watch something else so i'll i'll cross that bridge when i get there but for the most part we watch the bears the bears games are watched in this household and then i'm watching prime time games but like i i don't think last year i was really ever like watching every sunday game you know it was it's hard to commit to that and also yeah with kids do that necessarily so there's a lot of like alright if the bears play at one we're watching that bears game and then we're like going out to do something for the late games or if the bears are playing the late game where you know whatever or if the bears are playing monday night football sunday i might not watch a lot of football on sunday it or friends are having people over you know i don't know there's always plans that could revolve around football but it's not the way it used to be in my twenties pre kids where i could wake up and watch the london game and watch the next game and the next game and watch sunday night and just be in pure football bliss for twelve hours straight but one one thing i did wanna pull you and then the loyal listeners of the football card podcast but i need a staple like game day snack i need a i need i'm thinking of something like in the crock pots and like mini weenies or my wife makes a mean buffalo chicken dip that's a staple that you know everyone's gotta have for football watching but curious if you have any staple staple snacks that you're whipping up in the stacking slabs household yeah i'm a big snack guy the buffalo chicken dip is definitely that's high up on the list there's trade offs though your monday it's not gonna be a lot of fun you gotta know that going into it because the the buffalo chicken dip has a lot of substance so recognize that we have a a traeger traeger customers so like the the best is when i wake up in the middle of the night get that thing going and do some pulled pork do some wings and just let that baby smoke and time it so that right before the colts game there's some smoked meats so that is something i like i'm very traditional i kinda just like if you got a bag of tostitos like i can find something to do with it like i i like i love a tostitos party size only don't bring the small bags don't bring the rounds don't give me the hint of this and the hint of that i want the traditional fresh party sized bag you open it up the first chip you take out the the top the saltiest it's always the best so shout out tostitos if you wanna sponsor the football card podcast we got some placement for you but yeah that's man i love i love the marriage of snacks and sports i could talk we could do a whole podcast on this topic yeah no i mean chips of course chips dips have that down i was thinking i need more of a i need a sign the meats i need a signature meat dish out here i need i might need the traeger i'm i'm it's you could do dude crock pot with you could get you could do your what were you hyping up what what what do you order at fat dan's italian beef yeah you can make your own italian beef yeah we got a well i'll figure something out but yeah this season i i like having a new signature dish every season so we'll figure fun fun aside or on this topic with pre kids i used to have friends over like for every game you know it would just be like you had nothing else going on and yet except to invite ten year buddies over for a party and to watch the game and there was a couple seasons where what my strategy was and this was fun so if if you have the time everyone and you don't have a bunch of kids or priorities i would highly recommend doing this and that is whoever your team is playing create the cuisine based on the opposition's region and that was amazing man i i we you know we do crab cakes when we're out and you know playing the ravens like that was a blast and so that was fun i i that just triggered as we were talking about this that i like that there's something there carolina week one carolina barbecue good good idea but yeah listeners if you have any game day snacks any game day recipes share maybe that's a card call out share a recipe alright so yeah the i don't know any other parenting tips for navigating game day how how are you thinking you nailed it man you nailed it i i i need to say no more and that is you're up against a lot a lot of adversity with pleasing spouses with taking care of kids the best you can do is focus on your team yeah focate put all your focus on your team doesn't matter what your fan who's playing in fantasy where your bets are the investments you've made in cards none of that matters just focus in on your team and i found when you do that everything else falls into place and then you get the kids down you got sunday night football monday night football where you can just enjoy it so don't stretch yourself too thin it's a long season yeah i mean even if i get the bears and then i get prime time that's still seven hours of football which is a that's a good that's a win that's a big win in this day and age it's not what it used to be my numbers are are lower than what it used to be but i'll take seven hours absolutely alright market watch market watch shout out card ladder this is a disclaimer on all these these are all monster sales because we had premier auction and there's just such big cards and i felt like obligated that we had to talk about them so we understand most of us probably don't play in these waters myself included so we're gonna talk about them though first card up we actually i think we talked about this card before it even existed so we it is we've gone full circle we have the twenty twenty five topps chrome patrick mahomes superfractor one of one not the variation the real deal in the pocket he's got the tongue out a little bit getting ready to unload this card sold for two hundred and forty thousand dollars it's in a psa nine yeah man this is this is a a a big old card patrick mahomes' first topps chrome super fracture that card is sick i love twenty twenty five topps chrome the design continues to grow on me with like the team color stripes and then the chiefs with a gold parallel it just always looks so good like this card was meant to be a super factor two hundred and forty thousand dollars is a lot of money a lot a lot of money but i mean it it kinda makes sense i think when you look at what a huge one of one of premier quarterbacks command like we're watching the i think it'll be ended by the time this airs but the brady twenty thirteen finite is on all currently sitting over a million dollars so not a rookie card not even a first year panini prizm but still a million dollar card for just a top tier one of one of tom brady top tier one of one of patrick mahomes going for two hundred and forty thousand kind of falls in line with that pricing in my mind but yeah awesome card i was just looking i'm trying to find it let's just use this as an example because it's a good cross comparison the last mahomes twenty seventeen prism gold or gold vinyl that sold was december six of twenty five and that was the gold vinyl and a b g s nine five that card sold for a hundred and ninety five thousand so you can and its card ladder value is two hundred and three thousand so you this is where you get into the rookie and the rarity and scarcity conversation where it's like the question is what would you rather have would you rather have patrick mahomes twenty seventeen gold vinyl rookie card for a hundred and ninety five thousand dollars or would you rather have patrick mahomes there's five copies of that or would you rather have patrick mahomes' first topps chrome super app factor which is a one of one for two hundred and forty thousand dollars that is the question that is the question damn i kinda like the super better i don't know i the the gold the rookie gold vinyl is awesome i think having the rookie gold vinyl plus forty k is or plus thirty five k that that's that yeah we do this a lot what would you rather have the gold vinyl plus thirty k or would you rather have the tops chrome one of one give me the rookie plus the cash the rookie this is maybe the toughest question of them all i'm a prism simp but then also i'm a rarity and scarcity simp so it's like there's five of these there's one of those man that's i think i'd probably side with you on this i think i'm going gold vinyl give me the forty k and let's let's let's be happy about it yeah i just i kinda want forty k that's all i'm thinking about right now maybe it can come from tostitos yeah shout out tostitos because yeah that yeah would you rather have the prism gold vinyl rookie and unlimited snacks and betting funds for the entire football season or the super factor that's what that thirty five k might turn into and maybe buy a couple cards here and there like some cards that you wouldn't even buy that are on your watch list like let me knock out like this three k card and this five k card that i've been staring at forever get some free snacks and then have some more money in the bank i'd love after talking through this gold vinyl all day gold vinyl all day but man i would i'm not knocking anyone who would pick the super fracture that card that card rules i like the picture on that better too i don't like i don't love the mahomes rookie i mean it's fine but he's just smaller like i like how clear you can see this image this this like looks like mahomes to me you know like captures the essence of patrick mahomes super bowl champion mvp all that good stuff well that's the other thing you have to deal with on rookie cards sometime the guys it's they look younger they don't look like themselves not fully formed yet so you're you're you're dealing with that as well but good good point yeah yeah i'm looking at yeah he's just a little like too small on the prism card maybe he doesn't he doesn't have on the topps chrome card he has you you got some authenticity as a whole in his sock or knee pad there so you can actually see a hole like this he has been playing this game he's got a hole in his apparel here yeah he just he looks like a veteran in that photo he does we're moving on we're moving on this is fun because we're gonna go full circle these are full circle moments going to caleb williams twenty twenty four prism black finite and a psa nine this card sold for two hundred and twenty two thousand dollars and i wanna contrast this with the jackson dart which at the last time of recording dart was leading the williams now the jackson dart from twenty twenty five his rookie black finite sold for two hundred and four thousand dollars so the caleb ends up winning out by twenty thousand dollars you i'm sure you were paying attention to this what do you make of all of this that there's a lot of hype on both quarterbacks i'm glad that justice was served and that that the caleb ended higher because for a while there it looked i was like is jackson dart really gonna sell for double caleb williams i just didn't i don't know it didn't make sense to me so this makes a little more sense just based off caleb williams has led a team to the playoffs has won a playoff game those extra little accomplishments over jackson dart i think are the reason that his card probably sold for more that he's already just accomplished a little more and people are excited about the potential upside of him and ben johnson becoming a dynasty which we all can feel is about to happen but yeah i mean that's just still so much money for a couple quarterbacks who in this grand scheme of things have not done anything yet really so awesome card i would love this card it this though is similar photo to the like mahomes prism we're just kinda like standing kind of flat footed and feels like a photo shoot image instead of an in game action shot so it's not my favorite photo of kayla but and the dart the dart's got a little more energy to it yeah a little more action to it but yeah both cool car i really like the twenty twenty five design yeah i was gonna ask you what do you like better twenty four or twenty five i kinda think twenty five i there's something about on twenty five that like and this goes in with my twenty twenty five topps chrome commentary like the team colors as part of the card design where if you go to the dart like you can see that blue line behind his name and like the red line accents at the bottom and the blue and the red accents just like throughout the card i think that looks cool whereas like the caleb card is just outside of the bears logo there's no other bears colors within the design of the card so that's just something that i think jumps out to me as making twenty i think i'd take it twenty twenty five over twenty twenty four very respectable i will say this and we can close here with these two the there was a lot of lot of stinky prism design going on between like twenty nineteen and mhmm twenty two you could even maybe throw twenty three in there mhmm but then they they closed out the run very very strong twenty four and twenty five i think are both very very strong finishes to the run absolutely yeah nineteen to twenty three are all twenty twenty i like i like i like twenty twenty two agree but then like twenty one twenty two and twenty three were all too similar and like too close to twenty like so it's easy to like lump that that stretch of five including twenty nineteen together twenty one and twenty two are definitely at the bottom of the barrel for me in terms of the higher entire run those fat borders and it's just yeah no thanks but we move on so we have the highest selling public sale of a randy mars moss card of all time and that's his ninety eight skybox e x two thousand one essential credentials out of six selling for a hundred and forty five thousand dollars who needs shoulder pads who needs a helmet all you need is randy being randy and a ball in his arm and you're selling for a whole lot of money shout out nineties cards big sale from us yeah this card absolutely rules and this like being in the practice gear doesn't even bother me really that much on this one because it's so it looks cohesive in the sense of he's got the jersey on this the long sleeves underneath the purple shorts like there's something about when they're in practice gear where it's like a it's not like the full jersey or you know it's like more of this doesn't look like practice jersey he's wearing his like game day jersey just he just doesn't have pads on so it's less of the like the pad pads aren't the factor as much as like what the the garments are so and seeing his face is cool like i don't know this card rules wearing number eighteen like i think he only wore that his rookie year and then he switched i don't remember when he switched to eighty four but i love this card six copies that's so cool and yeah this design just never really gets old seeing the credentials from this year especially the the red and the purple one that's my favorite we close out with maybe the biggest stunner of the week for me the twenty twelve prism red die cut tom brady psa ten with a population of two selling for sixty nine thousand dollars the last sale on this was september twenty first twenty twenty five for nineteen thousand eight hundred that was a year ago a year ago jesus that's a wild come up and before that september wait oh that's different copy by the way different cop one of the the other one sold and then that yeah the two copies sold eight pop pop two what would the finite do that's all this always makes me think about like you got his twenty thirteen finite sitting over a million this twenty twelve red die cut selling for seventy k i need that twenty twelve finites that come out of the woodwork and hit auction or gold when's the last time a brady twenty twelve gold sold that'd be fun to watch as well yeah it's crazy but yeah man people are recognizing the yeah it's i would never have imagined that this this card would reach these heights but here we are are you a fan of the die cuts of this die cut i'm just not a die cut guy really i mean i've had these before obviously not a brady but i feel like it's missing something like part of the card so yeah i'm just not a massive die cut guy so not really not for me same and like i've seen these before with bears guys but the the red i don't like i've talked about this many times a red border with a bears player never did for me this looks great with brady though like this color scheme works so this card definitely is is a cool card a seventy thousand dollar card too yes big old sale shout out card ladder for making it easy to present marketwatch absolutely card ladder the best best in the biz alright getting to collecting updates and a card call out get out of here collecting updates current collecting projects that you're focusing your resources on any any pickups i did get a psa notification got a order coming back and in that order was my twenty nineteen ty hilton black finite i got a psa nine on that we talked about twenty nineteen finite last week with the larry fitzgerald and then this card popped and i was like oh i can't wait to have this in hand again so yeah not not a pickup but just to getting a card back that is my third t y finite i've got his twenty twelve rookie twenty thirteen and the twenty nineteen so if you got any other ones i'm happy to buy them from you wow what a run you need wait so you have twelve thirteen nineteen yes yeah you need that fourteen that's i do i need to pair it with the luck for sure i need the fourteen yes big time that's awesome yeah i got a psa sub back recently with a bunch of bears one of ones that was awesome it's always great just to have them have them back and for them to officially make their stake of claim within the case and then my other pickup two thousand two finest football mini box so there's two of those in a box is that how would they so a box would have three mini boxes there's six packs in this mini box so like a full box would have eighteen packs but the interesting thing about this i'll just give a quick two thousand two finest history lesson because i was also doing some like forum deep dives and found some exciting information where okay on this box it says approximate odds of finding a hot mini box is one in six hundred and thirty five okay and so the hot mini box is where the x factors would come from it's not like the x factors were randomly inserted into every box there would just be a hot mini box that was based on one reading all xfractors like every card in the hot mini box was can you imagine open that thing up yeah because i read a forum post where a guy was talking about he had ripped the product or saw someone rip the product and that they pulled they opened a hot mini box and it was all xfractors and they all had the same serial number like they were all like it you could've got the box that's like two out of twenty and it's all of the all the cards would be numbered two out of twenty which tracks with yes the midwest monster like several years ago i bought like twenty x factors that were just like in like a value bin this guy like had a ton of them and so many of them had like the same serial number and so like that kinda tracks where it's like alright someone hit a hot mini box and they made their way down here so i don't know always always interested in this product there's not a lot of info out there so finding any clues i can is always fun it that that lines up with some of my research that i've done on them over the years where i have seen the whether it was in an ebay listing or through like post somewhere i had i had seen x factors associated with hotbox but i never understood the full context it would just be like the x factors and it would be like copy would be like hotbox and i'd just be like what does that what does that really mean so you're providing clarity for me that i never really knew about before so and it's just interesting because i had done a i bought a bunch of beckett magazines from around the release because i wanted to find like the product preview and i have that in one of my magazines and they don't mention the x fractors at all as a chase card like they advertise the gold refractors but they don't even mention x which isn't that's weird to me that in a product preview you don't mention the rarest card rarest chase card in the set so i don't know how it all unfolded and what the people at top's finest were doing in the early two thousands but if you're working there let me know we would love to have you on the pod and we'd love to get you in the pick em' lane yeah come join come join alright card call out let's get out of here last week we asked to see your favorite fantasy players lot of lt yeah a lot of
