importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking stipes himself brett how you doing i'm well except for the the boogers i've i've caught the whatever's happening in the infant room over at my youngest daughter's daycare it's got the congestion going the boogers but you know what like we just we don't stop we just keep going and we keep going especially when you're in a big ugly autumn where toughness is key it is the strategy and also i can see the end of the road and at the end of the road is the bright lights and the start of actual football so by no means will i sit out my job is to show up and show out each and every week and stay consistent and it is the mission of the football card podcast to continue to produce and share these episodes with our loyal listeners and we appreciate you loyal listeners of the football card podcast we're almost there we are almost in the time where actual football is being played and we can talk about cards so although i have an ailment i'm i'm fighting through man that's what the big ugly autumn tells me to do can you imagine if you called off sick to the football card pod i saw a text that you're like hey i can't do it today i'm a little under the weather i the show would be over yeah would it be i guess would it be would it be more of an injustice if i called off sick or if i had a had someone come in and and replace me you're just calling in sick i mean if you had if you had put in some preparation and had a replacement lined up and you know that that could happen maybe that happens in the future but if you just straight up said your tummy hurt and you're not feeling well and you missed the football card pod i would then i would start looking for new cohosts i would have to start looking for a replacement with was there any this is this is bringing me back to a time where i'm not sure there was anything better than this in your twenties kicking ass in your career you're very reliable you've maybe moved up a position or two the boss depends on you you've built that trust you're there every week you're on time maybe the last one late and you realize you're like i got a few credits to be cashed in on so maybe one of those sunday nights maybe that your team's playing on sunday night football and you decide to keep it rolling because your team won and it's like two thirty in the morning you're like i'm in no condition to work tomorrow i work my ass off and you just like set your alarm to fire off that email like not feeling well and you just stay in bed all day that was the best that's a very specific reference and maybe you watch the colts beat the texans on monday night thirty four to seventeen in a nail biter and yeah no that needs to that can happen especially yeah like your to your point if you're you know doing well already on your own and you're a reliable you know career person versus can't make that a habit out there but yeah football's almost back like we're we're gonna have to have to start dealing with that soon got a lot of prime time games coming up gotta figure out you know what my what my move's gonna be need some need some alibis big big market plus previous season success means multiple late night games all the makings of a letdown season anytime i've had my hopes up they always get stomped out eventually but this season's different ben johnson saved my life he he did and and this wasn't on the sheet but i feel like we need to comment on it a little bit what was a more hilarious first of all i feel like and i i'm this is like for me i need to get this is a recognition of making sure that the algorithm doesn't drive my intake of sports news because it's not great it's not a great place to be however it was unavoidable this week with the jed york of it all on top of the deshaun watts of it of it all it's like you know what we've got some time in between until real things happen in the league let's just get as much schmud and as controversy as possible integrated in this nfl media and let the social media run wild so that there was the memes there was all the things but all i can say is a hundred and forty dollars man that's that's that's what you're going for the deshaun watson my goodness gracious when it when can it end so it's it's this is just it it feels like it's never gonna end but it's like when can this end yeah that shout out jed york just out here sloaming out here just you know like you know what he's he's had enough fancy dinners and high end high class escorts he's sick of that he needs sometimes you gotta go you know dumpster diving a little bit and get out there i was just looking because i still owe the black hat card's family some sort of ellen card and i'm like is there a judge york card out there but all i'm finding already is an insane amount of jed york graphic t shirts already just flooding the market all kinds of clever little things but wow shout out how fast you know people work people work hard but graphic t printers work harder so they they sure do so i thought that was interesting and yeah man it the nfl media machine never stops but dude i'm excited to be here we got episode sixty two a lot to cover shout out everyone listening to the football card podcast make sure you follow us at the football card pod but i'm ready to roll man let's do it episode sixty two sixty two weeks straight just a what a run i forgot to acknowledge when we blew past lou gehrig i mean we blew past fifty six so which is more impressive you know fifty six in a row or sixty two in a row i kinda think sixty two is a bigger number so i'm gonna lean sixty two yeah the my only let me let's document this now because we're talking numbers when we hit sixty four we need to have like a nintendo sixty four section and we can cross reference that with football games i feel like that would be good just to to cement episode fifth sixty four sixty couple fact checks here stat corrections episode sixty two it was joe dimaggio fifty six game hit streak i think i said lou gehrig good for you we're we're a football card podcast we're not the baseball we are over here so yeah sixty two better than fifty six that's the bottom line because stone cold said so yes alright sixty two i think we got an interesting opening topic here that you've got brewing what do you think about that for me you know i think the i don't know what i was doing but this just hit me and the i like to bring up existing narratives and i like to look at them and compare and contrast with data sometimes shout out card ladder the official data provider of the football card podcast but when i got back into collecting in twenty twenty i remember and it this is such an easy thing to do it's like you see what everyone else is buying and where money's moving and you just like go to try to play in those circles as opposed to like thinking for yourself and collecting what you like you eventually get there and i would imagine most listeners of the football card podcast operate like that but i remember when i got back in twenty twenty the message regarding football cards was very very clear there was this narrative and it said only by quarterbacks and you'd hear we'd ask i'm a very curious person i'd ask why and they'd be like you know running backs don't last long receivers depend on quarterbacks don't buy defensive players and i kinda like took that especially as i graduated into buying what i loved and like i started saying don't buy running backs on every card i posted but i looked and i looked at the date in card ladder and did a index from january twenty january one twenty twenty to today and football cards are up three hundred and eighty point nine nine percent which is a big jump and it feels like that i remember i could buy whatever i wanted for like next to nothing back in twenty twenty it make i'm like take me back to that era like in a way but i think obviously i'm not saying all this to say quarterbacks don't matter i think they're still the straw that stirs the drink but it also feels like and there's some sales to support this from this week but it feels like there's been some recognition regarding other players and collectors are spending more money on other players and this can be because they love the player it could be they're building out a set they like a specific parallel but i wanted to start with that and then there's some topics within that that i wanna get into but i don't know like do you have any opening remarks just based on i feel like we got kinda back in it about the same time so i don't know like those are some numbers there there's some growth but like what is your what are your thoughts on just like this existing only by quarterbacks to kinda where we've ended up with now yeah i think fascinating topic i do think it's like i don't think it's bad advice i don't think the only by quarterbacks is that all like a bad direction to go in especially if your goal is like to profit from sports cards like that is a i think it's a fine rule of thumb i don't think it's you have to do it at you don't have to listen to anything but just if you are entering the hobby and your goal is to like buy and sell sports cards and maintain a living or not even a living but just like have this side hustle thing i don't think buying quarterbacks is a bad route to choose and like yeah so that that's my opening thought is like of all the just like advice that people throw out there or things like that there's far worse things than just like only buying quarterbacks i mean i think i think you bring up a very important topic and this is a very important topic in distinction when we hear all of the conversations and narratives across all the platforms where you've got individuals that are providing advice regarding like collecting like i like this year of this set because these parallels are shiny and then you've got other people that are saying like they're providing collective collect collecting advice but it's really kind of investment thesis or theory and the there's a lot of rub i think online because someone will say something like only by quarterbacks and then like the collector of reggie bush or ladanian tomlinson will be like that's not true because i'm having a blast buying these cards and this is great so i don't know man it feels like there's kind of like those two worlds get mixed and mushed altogether sometimes between like people just sharing like their thoughts on collecting versus people sharing advice that is all based on kinda the financial side of things yeah yes and i mean all of this boils down to like this person who we're advising like what do you want out of this or like what you know what's the goal and like that would whatever the answer to that question is would be the reason for whatever advice we give but i i just remember when i first like and like i love the way that i collect and i've always leaned towards skilled players and i've haven't been like buying quarterbacks or anything but when i set up at a show for the first time and i had my table of like early two thousands finest football and like skilled guys and just no modern quarterbacks and i just didn't sell one card the whole time and like i still had fun and i was like this is cool that i did it i mean i talked to a lot of people and show the cards but it's true when you go to these shows people only want not and again like i'm not i don't wanna speak in absolutes but for the most part people are there to buy quarterbacks or like these big name players that are liquid and that they can move very easily even at the national this year i had a couple of random bears cards that i wanted to sell like a dj moore gold vinyl and a rokon smith gold vinyl and so i could not sell those to anybody like i went to multiple tables you do you wanna buy this and people would be like sick cards but no like those cards have one specific buyer out there and they're not walking up to my table like they want their table to be full of quarterbacks and the players that people are are asking for so they're like to me the don't buy quarterback or only buy quarterbacks is like the advice for someone who is again trying to become a full time dealer flipper in this hobby which again like that's not how i do it but i admire those people like if i were a young kid and there was an opportunity to like do this full time like buy and sell cards full time i would a hundred percent have been trying to go that route and if even if part of that is just me buying and selling cards all the time and not like putting as much into like my collection collection at that point because you know you're trying to get this thing off the ground so all that to say is i admire anyone out there who's like hustling to make a living off cards like going to all those shows like that is hard work like that is not i don't know i just never see like these young kids well some some can be annoying and some content can be annoying but for the most part it's like hey if you're young and you have no kids and all the time to just go show to show and like buy and sell sports cards go for it and if you're doing that i bet you're probably buying quarterbacks what year did you set up at the card show where you had like the running backs probably twenty twenty three okay okay if you set up let's just use a local example let's say you set up at the midwest monster and you had that same case of cards this fall you you did i would imagine the the results and interest would be very very different yeah i think i'd probably do better i think you would do a lot better it's i i just i look at signals i just feel like there's more confidence and conviction people have finally been like i had this guy on my fantasy team this card is sick like i don't like it's you know one tenth the cost of you know brady or whatever wait like when did this change like because i felt like it was just like all of a sudden like the mhmm football card side felt more validated to put big money into non quarterback players like maybe it's always been happened but it felt like there was a moment when it started and like really proliferated do you do you have any clue on like when that happened and why i don't think there's like one moment but i think it's just natural with time passing more and more people keep coming into the hobby more and more people keep trickling down the funnel and like finding this lane and seeing the opportunities that we've seen or just seeing how modern current player is worth x and i can get another player whose career is already done and who i like have all these awesome memories for for like one tenth of the price and i think that always made sense to us right away and a lot of people we know and yeah i don't think there's one necessarily watershed moment but just and as like more and more people make content and there's more and more exposure of hey this player's highest selling card is this much like those things where i'll be like drew brees has one sale over six figures and jaden daniels has fifty sales over six figures like the more you see graphics like that to me anyways it makes me want to go back to those older players so i just think as more and more people keep coming into the hobby it's it's natural that a percentage of them are going to filter into this world of fantasy players or just team collecting set collecting all that good stuff when i think about the twenty twenty era and i think about content maybe specifically on like instagram it was all like player driven it was all like charts here's this player and there's very little like going a a few layers deep like talking about product sets parallels that those sorts of things but that has certainly changed like we have grown up as a category where more individual people are creating more people are educating around sets talking about like rarity scarcity like the aesthetics of certain cards which is the content i wanna consume and it's fun and i feel like that shines a light on builds awareness for products and gets people to maybe buy a card that they didn't know about of a skill position player do i guess like the what what's the contrast of that like that action and activity and content going on versus like this narrative of like you know we'll just buy the quarterback like i don't know it just feels like that more like leaders in the space sharing has led to more people feeling comfortable with buying positions that aren't quarterback yeah i think that's gotta be part of it or or just like we you've we found more of a network and there are more people vocal about it i mean we're on the footballcard podcast sixty two weeks straight of talking about this type of thing so like yeah having representation i guess out there because in twenty twenty one twenty twenty two when i was buying running backs and stuff it was like oh no one else is doing this except for a group of ten people that i found on instagram even though i know it's way more than that but it just took time to like kind of uncover everybody and you know a lot of these people who so many instagram is like one percent of yeah the collecting world too so yeah i don't know i i but yes i think the there's more confidence in people to talk about it or people are just more willing to talk about it and as you see examples i do think that influences people and yeah i don't know i just think i i don't know if it's my own warped you know social media ecosystem social media bubble but i definitely feel like i see a lot of football card content but i also understand that my algorithm is very football card coded so that is gonna happen but even beyond that i do think there's more football card coverage the maybe the final thought that just like came to me as we're thinking about this maybe talking about subjects specifically is we we talked about this i think on one of the episodes you made a comment and i had never really thought about it but just like looking at barry sanders and looking at jerry rice and then those are like the leaders of that like those those two players and their collectability have really like pushed this like skill position thing maybe to more to the forefront because everything's always attached to dollars and those those guys have been you know we we ran through the data of what they what their like how many five figure cards they've had over the last two years and then like behind them it's like you got randy moss and then calvin johnson like so like these players like from different eras are continuing to kinda push this forward but like i don't know man this is like super nerdy and i'm not quite sure how to like get into this but like you you look at the nineties and you you we've talked about marino and how he was like kind of a celebrity but like there wasn't really like that you had a great group of quarterbacks you know aikman stevia marino jim kelly like all these guys elway but like none of them were like i would say were so accomplished that they should rise above like the what jerry rice and barry sanders did to like the imagination of football fans and collectors so like that that like elevates those skill positions and that players in the era but then like you know you get into like the two thousands and you've got brady and then you've got manning so it's just like they're like dominance almost like has overshadowed all of the other surrounding players in the in that era and maybe made it a little more difficult for the skill position players who are all time grades like ladany and tomlinson to maybe reach the heights that barry sanders has reached in his cards and collecting and it's it's a long game like we still have time like these things will all play out but i don't know man i i try to i think about that it's like in the eras and what else was happening like what was competing for dollars and i think that's like an interesting exercise to dig through to try to understand like why your favorite skill position player who you love maybe hasn't reached the heights in terms of collectability and desirability that maybe some of these quarterbacks have that might be less popular in the grand scheme of things yeah that's there's something really interesting there like who is the best quarterback of the nineties like there's not really a clear cut answer like there there's cases for a lot of different guys like brett favre had three straight mvps that's pretty sick he won a super bowl steve young won a super bowl mvp elway two super bowls marino all the stats kelly went to a bunch of suit like there's these different guys who all have pretty strong aikman aikman's garbage though but eight eight eighties it's very apparent joe montana joe montana yes but nineties nineties it's very unclear which then it but then if you ask who's the best receiver of the nineties jerry rice and it's like the best running back of the nineties barry sanders like yeah the fact that those guys are kinda clear cut number one in their position i think there there's something there versus when you ask the quarterback question and there's all these different opinions or takes or arguments to be made so but then when you get into the two thousands it's brady it's like who is the most accomplished quarterback brady who's the best quarterback there's arguments to be made there for the is it manning is it even rogers in the twenty tens like you know there's different all of a sudden there's other things but and then the skill position thing isn't as clear in the two thousands like if you say who's the best receiver of the two thousands that answer isn't as clear or the best running back of the two thousands same thing so that i don't know there's something interesting there about how there are and again everyone has their opinions but there are some kinda clear cut answers for some of these questions and like those players tend to be the ones that kind of lead the pack on the collecting front so when yes great observations and points when when i ask you in the two thousands who is the best receiver who would you say randy moss yeah so kind of nineties but yeah two that yeah so what about running back l t yeah so we're we're we're we're in agreement there but that i feel like that hasn't quite broke broke broke like i would love maybe we'll pull the audience like what do you think but i just i feel like that is is bubbling like that is bubbling and that like if you and i can both come to an agreement not saying everyone will come to that agreement but i feel like the the momentum around that category is is not quite where it it can be especially like looking at some of the skill guys for sure well and then there's the like the card like the card landscape during this time because bryce and sanders have the green pmgs and the rubies and like they're in all the iconic ninety sets that basketball collectors and baseball collectors know baseball doesn't have colored pmgs baseball card podcast but the when you get into like the lt like okay what's jerry rice's best card if you ask people that i feel like people would gravitate towards the pmgs and the gym masters gym masters yep but if you ask like the best ladanian tomlinson card mhmm i i think it's just like people don't know the early two thousands as well because the early two thousands is a weird landscape on foot on the football front yes when lt is a rookie in two thousand one rookie year too in that product and what we're talking about and then like you don't from two thousand one you don't get one of ones until like two thousand five yes so like there's this weird gap which is a gap that i'm fond of that we're all fond of a lot of football card collectors are with like i i do like the weird topps chrome was different every year during that era and finest was doing weird things but yeah there's there's something there too like even i guess randy moss is a rookie in ninety eight so that's an easier answer but for anyone who's like a rookie from two thousand on like what is their best card it becomes harder to figure out until you kinda get into one of one land you know what's interesting about this and especially with lt specifically and thinking i'm like my wheels are spinning as you're talking about this i i don't the i think there's an issue here because i don't even know what it i don't even know what it would be but i would say with with as a part of that conversation i think you would have to say like whatever ladanian tomlinson is first game use shield on card autograph but isn't it like i can't like just tell you what that is because i i don't know but that that to me i feel like is a somewhat of an issue i mean you could say like also say like ladany and tomlinson's first super fracture like that would probably be in the conversation but they're not dependent on his rookie year which a lot of people stick to rookies because of the product selection of that era so that that is an we could get nerdy and probably spend hours digging into those concepts but i think that's very interesting and it's way less defined it's uncharted territory when it comes to like the two thousands to twenty tens yeah and i mean the barry and jerry those biggest cards aren't years like right cards i mean yes they're those cards sucked they're they're psa tens command a high value but yeah i i don't know it's it's fascinating there's so many sets that like have good moments but yeah there aren't the clear cut kinda heavyweights in the early two thousands into the two thousand tens even that like basketball or just ninety sets seem to have and yeah it's a it's still the wild west and that's why i like it yes and i to to bring this all home i think what we what we just illustrated there and like the digging and the back and forth and the questioning shows why a take like only by quarterbacks or you know don't buy running backs like you can't like you can't just take all that stuff at face value because like players staffs collecting manufacturers eras you have to take all of that stuff into consideration because all that stuff matters so i say all this to say like these blanket statements piss me off and i'm glad at least we two collectors could talk through some of this to help validate that fact that yeah just go do some research like there is got to be gold out there in terms of like someone who's ahead of the curve who's understanding like what people want in uncharted territories especially in that like decade of football cards like if i had all the time in the world i would just study all of that and i would go find the cards that no one's talking about because like you'd be i think you'd be validated and i think you'd be able to buy some of that stuff for a percentage of what a lot of the new stuff is going for yeah and like one more like the only by quarterbacks thing i think there's also like a difference between and like i don't know i would i would still always and this is what i did i'd rather buy old retired skill players over modern quarterbacks like the there's like modern quarterbacks retired quarterbacks modern skill guys retired skill guys like there's i don't know there's so much nuance that goes into what you wanna do this so this is a pro joe burrow podcast we both really like joe burrow i you like joe burrow right yeah great player like he is unbelievable but to your point the what joe burrow cards are going for and what he has accomplished in comparison to a player like ladanian tomlinson and what he accomplished like it's kinda night and day mhmm yeah but you're gonna have to pay a lot to be in the joe burrow game right now well and just you're gonna look in ten years and joe burrow is gonna be maybe like maybe jim kelly or like marino like like i i mean marino's even i don't know it's just hard there are so many quarterbacks all the time too like every year we're getting four new quarterbacks who get the chance like the amount just the modern current game is just so fast and like the the actual gameplay itself but also the card collecting side of it the card like even buying caleb williams cards i'm like why am i do like this is because you're you're bitten you got the bug man you're excited i'm sick but like part of me is like i know i'm spending the like the highest that these cards are probably ever gonna be worth is like what self awareness paying right now which like should i be doing this should i just keep like i don't know but i i love it because i'm excited for the season to start but i don't know there's yeah this is good there's good topics in just all of this i i wanna just ask you one more question that's unrelated and related because we were talking about burrow and this is gonna this is this whatever your your i'm excited to hear your response does does joe burrow play for the cincinnati bengals three years from now no i could see him leaving he seems like just would i don't know i just don't know if we're gonna ever see a lot of quarterbacks stay with the same team their entire career the players in general tend are probably going to move around more and more as it goes on and so three years from now he'll be in the league have been like ten years maybe but if they win a super bowl in the next three years maybe he stays but if they keep having kinda like these disappointing seasons i could see even after this year i don't know what his contract's looking like but i don't know like time is short these guy play he knows his career is short he's one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league yep like look at matt stafford stafford laid the blueprint of like hey i gave you my best shot detroit and couldn't get your shit together i'm gonna go to la and so who's to say that after herbert flames out that the chargers don't come calling joe burrow or that would be something miami joe burrow in miami are you kidding me joe cool down there joe shiesty in the yeah i don't know i think there's the saints burrow goes back to louisiana i think there's a lot of story lines where joe burrow i three years from now joe burrow is not a bengal oh guaranteed wow yeah i mean you've got brady manning brees rodgers all these guys all time greats for their respective teams but they all weren't on one team it's it it that is an interesting thing to monitor these quarterbacks who feel like are a part of your institution forever it it's almost like you need to do some like preparation and mentally say like they're eventually gonna reach a point where this guy isn't here anymore so it's like better win those super bowls now yeah there will be a time where we see joe burrow in just like a weird jersey burrow in a jags jersey it's gonna be like wait what how did this happen joe montana two teams joe montana every great quarterback has played for multiple teams here's the here's the marino marino you're right good call out on marino and and well elway's a son of a bitch because he got drafted to the colts that's true that's legend john elway final final final final and we can move on to the numbers who has a higher likelihood of staying with one team for the rest of their career is it patrick mahomes is it josh allen oh mahomes i feel like mahomes is because he's already like he's won so much like he seems more locked in versus tom brady won a lot yeah but i think two more like disappointing bill seasons and like if he's had it yeah i think the fans might be over it too you know especially if there's i'd i've just seen how fast it can chain like remember vanderjag missing that kick vanderjag went from being the most don't break up vanderjag when we're talking mahomes and josh allen come on but just like he was the most accurate kicker in nfl history all like all this and then he shanks a bad kick and it's like get this guy out of here if you if josh allen if they make the playoffs and he throws three picks and they lose to the chiefs like bills fans are gonna be like no i or he has some shitty fumble and fumbles away in afc championship like i i don't know i think he's he he could have two bad games in the playoffs that people are get really fed up whereas mahomes i think has more grace because he's won before and i don't think he could get run out of town the way that josh allen could we the i can't i can't i can't imagine josh allen getting run out of town i feel like he's the most beloved quarterback to a city that we've seen in a while but maybe you're right the bills bills bills bills have always lost i know but who are you gonna replace josh allen with they replaced manning they got manning out of there like they're if the stars align if josh allen gets hurt and he's out for a year and then like if josh allen has a neck surgery and then there's some prodigy sure sitting there at sure yep if who is it marshall manning marshall manning of the bills i'm waiting for him to come to indy come on i don't know i could it just all changes so fast in the nfl week to week and if the bills have a bad year like i think the narrative chain it it goes from like lovable josh allen we're all rooting for you to kinda like damn maybe he just can't do it he can't win the big one he can't do it here he he'll he'll turn from bill's mafia yeah the josh allen heel turn i'd i'd be here for that so would i i think this was the longest opening segment in the history of the football card podcast that was numbers in episode sixty two which is probably a good thing because we don't have a lot to talk about for sixty two big ugly autumn is getting ugly already episode sixty two shout out card ladder couldn't do it without card ladder one hall of famer has ever worn sixty two jim langer he was the center for the miami dolphins during their super bowl runs during their undefeated nineteen seventy two season he's a two time super bowl champion three time first team all pro six time pro bowler just kind of a a stud big ugly down there in the middle of the line for the dolphins but what so he's the only hall of famer then i have to shout out my guy joe tooney guard for the bears tooney four time super bowl champion three time first team all pro three consecutive first team all pros won two super bowls with the patriots and brady won two super bowls with mahomes and the chiefs he's about to win two super bowls with caleb williams and the bears we love joe toony on this side and joe tooney was in twenty twenty five topps chrome which is awesome gotta post that card shout out shout out topps getting it right with the checklist getting old joe tooney up there what about you who'd you have for sixty two joe tooney is a good player i had i would imagine the next hall of famer that were sixty two and that is the brother-in-law of taylor swift creating a lot of blank space when he's mowing guys down and got a lot of holes for running backs to run through and that is jason kelsey what a career he had eagle center from twenty eleven to twenty twenty three super bowl champion six time first team all pro i didn't even know this was called this but he was the built ford tough offensive lineman of the year in twenty seventeen he played a hundred and ninety three games and started all one hundred and ninety three games he was an undersized linebacker who walked onto cincinnati never got recruited transitioned to offensive line and the rest is history jason kelsey was an incredible football player and i feel like because travis is a megastar and has you know the the beautiful pop star wife that the career on the field career of jason kelsey never gets the credit that i think it it deserves but he is a hell of a player so shout out jason kelsey you probably don't need shout outs from anywhere else anyone else but we're gonna shout you out here in his biggest sale of all time what do you know entering the kaboom room twenty five gold kaboom out of ten psa ten sold in december for seven thousand one hundred and fifty six dollars card ladder value on that is ten k but i popped for this because i was like man i'm not sure how many offensive linemen gold kabooms i've seen so this is a big ugly autumn this is a big ugly card and i had to had to talk about it yeah what as far as center pictures go that card is sick i mean just the holding the ball pointing out the mic like what a what a pose on that that's a sick card like shout out kabooms for this one they got that one right and yeah shout out kelsey six first team all pros in his last seven seasons so after turning thirty he kind of like they won that's the super bowl in seventeen and then it feels like he gave that incredible speech at the super bowl parade kinda like got more on people's radar and from then just kinda became a perennial all pro guy and yes having travis kelce as a brother is that the best football brother duo in nfl history i got the barbers tts up there the mannings that's i i you got it's the mannings it's the mannings yeah the dude the there's there's four yeah there's there's four super bowls there kelsey and the kelseys have four okay you're right the kelseys have four yeah i i no that as far as they're they're up they're they're they're they're might be number two in my in my book okay kelsey's mannys barber's i'm sure there's others i'm not thinking about yeah shout out shout out brothers in in the league shout out brothers we need triplets next i need to see some triplets in the league i'm sure there have been some by the way big ugly autumn just some recognition here i think the real reason why the eagles had the success they did in the the had the you know holding up the trophy you've got jason kelsey anchoring the line and then you've got another hall of famer lane johnson who i think is in his final year this year it's like that's pretty good when you when you could go like decades at a time with like two soon to be hall of famers on your offensive line you're probably gonna win a lot of games absolutely okay i'm sure people listening are are yelling at their radios or wherever they listen to the football card who'd we miss couple brothers tj and jj watt of course shannon and sterling sharp hall of famers oh wow and then the bosas joey and nick bosa i'd say are up there as trayvon and stefon diggs too so there's tj would that be to like you and your brother in nfl i think both are that good the the one of my favorites you're inducted into the hall of fame's i've seen is is is shannon and sterling sharp that that one is so good because it he's sterling is so not expecting it and he was just in the basement and shannon has the jacket on it's so good like that is a great piece of content i'm like i'm like in tears watching i'm like this is bring me more of this but in terms of the those you just brought up jj and tj watt man that is a hell of a combo jj watt is almost mythical at this point he was so dominant he was so good he looked like a professional wrestler out there a a a men amongst boys playing in i he he it wasn't it wasn't long ago that he was playing but it feels like forever ago at this point save it for episode ninety nine i will i will get ahead of ourselves yeah it might be it will be the jj watt episode he's he's worth it yeah yes no the the watts and the kelseys that those two are kinda neck and neck i think manning's number one both the manning's number one for sure but then yeah i think the watts give the kelseys a run for their money and then the sharps yeah sharps are up there i have to be up there too but two hall of famers yeah and shannon sharpe during his induction where he was like i'm in the hall of fame and i'm not even the best football player in my family he says something like that which is what a line and then to for his brother to get in eventually is awesome so shout out the brothers alright episode sixty two should we get into some topics some questions let's let's do it okay first up from brooklyn barry bright he wants to know he says looking to switch up my coffee any suggestions like a strong and flavorful cup so so i a personal favorite here at stacking slabs hq i always like to like highlight and promote local stuff and there's plenty of it but i'm not gonna do that here i'm gonna go out to the pacific northwest stumptown man stumptown coffee will hit you right where you need to it'll get you fired up that coffee is unbelievable i'm pretty sure you could buy it online maybe even on amazon but the beans are so nice it is flavorful and i'm convinced it has the most caffeine there is when it comes to anything you can buy i love it we both love we love it here we try to keep as much of it in the house as as possible we're out right now so i'm like i think i got starbucks in my cup which doesn't hold a candle to this but shout out stumptown yeah we're we're mainly a nespresso house over here but i get the i get the beans in rotation cut i got i got a bean water going this week and normally just buying from a local place shout out tinker coffee shop right down the street but yeah i'm not like i drink a lot of coffee but i'm not a coffee i don't really have my brands that i'm dedicated to probably because i'm just throwing in pods or just buying whatever beans are on the shelf so actually i i'm open for recommendations too stumptown stumptown's good i'm like check it out grab some stumptown and yeah any other coffee recommendations out there let us know at the football card pod we are a pro coffee podcast over on the football card pod especially during these we're we're potty training pod too and we're not sleeping we're having rough sleeps lately so i'm tired brain's a little foggy this morning and we're pounding coffee i think maybe we should get sponsored by pull ups does pull ups wanna sponsor us that okay we need to get the pull up sponsorship the coffee sponsorship pro football reference sponsorship maybe spidey slash patrick stump maybe if we got p stumped to write a jingle for the football card pod can you imagine off to new heights yeah we've got a we've got a list of outstanding sponsorships that we need to wrangle in alright good question ben thought that was fun oh yeah we're always open for non football related questions we can take those on the football card pod if you have coffee questions or or other if you have parenting questions we could maybe get into our parenting bag before the season starts we got another week to to exhaust these non football topics before we get to the season next up from chargers pc sports cards as the regular season quickly approaches and the ghosts of seasons past are ready to come out at any moment what are some game day superstitions that you will carry with you into the new season i've listed a few nfl nfl player and fan superstitions for comparisons patrick mahomes wears the same red underwear his wife bought him on game days greg hardy's kraken persona the defensive end used to transform into an alter ego named the kraken wearing red contact lenses and black face paint during warm ups until the nfl banned the paint the buffalo bills table smash members of the bills mafia famously celebrate pregame tailgates by slamming each other through plastic folding tables so we got some good pregame pregame superstitions and rituals going here brett you got any in your household on colts game days yeah so i wanna a previous one that was almost an end of an era is that and i i attribute the closing of this place to be the last time the colts were successful there used to be a bar a stone's throw from lucas oil it's called basie's it was a real shithole but they had it popping on game day there was like a brother in there with an acoustic playing like hurt so good and like ever long and stuff like that and then like you know they're bringing the jaeger trays out you got just people ripping heaters inside like inside but it's really outside it was like one of those things shout out basis that used to be my spot i loved it so much many years ago it's taken me back but i kind i kind of i i definitely maintain same attire definitely during winning stretches i try to keep it consistent i'm like big on that also if i'm going to the games a requirement is my daughter's saying go colts before we leave and me dapping them up like that's important and then going when i go to games i i still have the same routine or my new same routine is i used to be able to walk to the games in my old house and that was just like the ultimate and i wanted to maintain that when i moved so me and my buddy who i go to all the games with we park our our car on mccarty go to chili water have a bite to eat shout out chili water great great spot have a bite to eat then walk from chili water they opened up finally pre went to the preseason game we can talk about that more but like they opened up the lily pass that were under construction for like the last three seasons so now we can walk through lily and walk into the stadium and it is awesome so yeah i try i there are a small a few things that i try to maintain for my sanity i like i i'm a creature of habit and i like a good route routine yeah that i haven't we i don't have one specific superstition or routine mainly because the bears have been dog shit for the past decade plus until last year was was a glimmer of hope but last year something that moved into rotation that will be a staple this year is we go to fat dance sunday morning so we went a handful of times last year it became kind of a routine towards the end of the season but getting there around like eleven kind of before the crowds are there like with with our daughter there's a lot of kids in the mix at the time but everyone just good spirits ready for the game fat dance is such good food so yeah fat dan's sunday morning will is definitely part of the part of the rotation and then yeah i have yeah a bunch of sweat like i never am like oh they won while i was wearing this so i'll wear it again i don't keep track of it like that but like when a game's on i am notorious in i'll move rooms like if we have people over i'll walk away i will go downstairs and walk watch by myself in isolation i can i have no problem telling people to get the fuck out of my house if the bears are losing and i'm mad so yeah but shout out fat dan's yeah fat so i'm assuming based on your proximity you're probably hitting the college the og yes at the college yeah yeah that great look we've got the one downtown off of mass ave which is closer to us but fat dan's if you are ever in indianapolis and you're looking for something like really unhealthy but like really easy dude it is the type of spot they they they bring out the the white like paper with the food all the food is on one massive thing of white paper they just plop it down their wings kick ass their burgers roll just you're a large fry and man i hope you like fries but the sad thing is is the fries are always gone by the time it's over for me because they're so damn good but wednesday nights we usually go out for a bite or order in with the kids i i'm thinking we might i might have to pull the fat dan's card i'm already salivating thinking about it hit the fat dan's card it's the you can get the fries tots combo which is that's that's a big hitter for us where it's like they just drop it on the middle of the table and yeah just a massive pile of fries and tots because we gotta get the tots in the rotation and then yeah no the italian beef though get that okay sweet and spicy dipped it's so good so it's also like part of the reason you probably like it too it's it is the owner's very big chicago fan so big cubs bar obviously they support the bear so you're it's a little little little taste of chicago here in indianapolis but shout out fat dan's love that place and with the when they have like the garage doors out front open and you get a breeze blowing inside it's truly heaven on earth when there's a bearsgate bay i cannot wait they opened up the downtown location in twenty sixteen like but right before the cubs world series and i'll never forget walking around the hood and i was like it was like a concert i was like what is going on and it was just everybody on mass ave watching the cubs game at the cubs world series at fat dan's which is the biggest pro chicago cubs place you can go in indianapolis and it was just so cool like people going nuts so man fat dance maybe they should be a sponsor or at least give us some some free food that'd be nice yeah come on free fries for the boys alright next up from tkd tickets it seems inevitable that there will be some kind of baseball work stoppage next year long time dealers have told me that previous baseball strikes have had a downward impact on hobby interest and prices but it has been a while since the last strike if a strike does happen do you think that the football card segment of the hobby is strong enough to keep trucking along or do you think that impacts of a baseball strike will spread across to football cards i yeah go ahead i don't think that like that i don't think a baseball strike would impact football cards at all is my takeaway i think that a baseball strike would impact baseball cards and maybe drive more interest to the past like the nineties seem to be having a moment like there's huge griffey and bond sales in early two thousands the like those kind of guys seem to be gaining momentum but yeah i just think like if there's not a active modern game happening it's just natural for people to kind of maybe dive back a little bit versus like wanting to you don't have new games and new players and new stats and stuff to watch and collect like you're i would think people would drift backwards but yeah i don't i don't think it would affect football what do you think yeah i don't think it would affect football i would say like nineteen ninety five was a long time ago the hobby has changed a million times over since then so i'm not sure we can expect the same things as a matter of fact like i think because these players aren't playing which leads to potential there might be more interest in baseball cards because of that just the way things work so yeah i don't know i think i don't i'm not a huge baseball guy but it sounds like the strike is inevitable so we'll probably get to see this thing play out yeah baseball card podcast shout out shout out lou gehrig's fifty six game history and joe dimaggio's disease alright next up from pack to the future podcast think of your favorite top four football cards what is card one and cards two through four if you could only keep one of those for the rest of your life either one or the group of two through four which are you keeping and why yeah i think i i i like my brain hurt when i was trying to like rank my four and then i finally just like came to the determination that like i probably wouldn't sell my twenty fourteen luck finite like i just i would pay whatever the other three are i would i would pick the the luck over that maybe even and i was like well is it could i put the other luck finite so i'd be like i'd probably just stick to that one just because i have such affection for it so i i'm sticking with the one card i think so i was thinking of this like i was like can i argue two through four for the sake of it because i love groupings but i'm thinking like if you were going to be stranded on an island mhmm and you could only either have your one favorite card or like your two through four i think i'd do two through four i want quantity i like having a little some groupings in there and again stranded on an island need things to look at three cards is better than one so that's that's an interesting way to look at it i think i would wanna be a minimalist being on an island and i wouldn't wanna carry around a lot of stuff have yourself imagine a little imagine a little like like like little little sack with like some like some like some like grubs that i can eat for protein and like a little water and then like my luck finite just one yeah okay that's my entertainment it's like what are you doing tonight oh i'm just gonna sit on some rocks and look at my my luck finite for a bit oh cool man i'll i'll see you using that to kinda try and track a plane like with one's reflection just flashing it also too then i started wondering like okay let's say you're gonna be stranded on an island and you get ten items right like you would be going survival based items but at what item number are cards on that list like how far would you have to get down because eventually if you're picking items to survive on a stranded island deserted island there's gonna be a moment where you need to pick items for entertainment and so then it's like where where do sports cards fit into the mix can i have my phone no phone no technology analog island yeah that's i feel like it would be i'm not sure where it would fit but i would i would need to have at least a card i think the the better question is would you rather have a like your favorite card in your collection to give you comfort or a picture of you you and your family is the picture of my family a one of one it it's a it's a one of one is it numbered oh it's it's just a base copy of my family it's it's nonparallel but it it's it's you know it's it is like a kodak version like you go into cvs and like hit the machine and like pops out like the photos yeah whatever happened to those by the way like we grew up in an era where like you you go to your your your mom or your dad would like open up these canister or these big tens of a hundred kodak pictures like where are those pictures it's like that was such a time like photo books and stuff it's like none of these things exist anymore yeah wow just getting down at the desert island and opening my bag and seeing i have an unlicensed picture of my family it's just throw this out get this trash out of here where's my where's my color finite alright last question from b sanders twenty collector this is a great question how many one of ones did wild card create this year dude dude dude by the i i just keep getting around i i keep getting to this moment where i'm like alright i need to like set up these like boolean search terms in my saved searches to get these the fuck out of here and i just never do it but it it's like make giving leaf a run for its money like every card in leaf is like a one of one by the way there is the most obscure shit of all time in the manufacturing side with some of these guys right now like do do i real do i really need like a dinosaur like peyton manning and like a political figure like do i don't need that card like who is this i'm like who is this for but i feel like every safe search is like like a dinosaur peyton manning and a political figure i'm like get this the fuck out of here please wow like a peyton velociraptor dual claw shield yeah it could be kinda tight alright or like what would a good one be like a sheriff crossover so like manning and like i don't know some who's some famous sheriff i can't even think right now john wayne john yeah yeah something like that john wayne game worn badge and then or movie worn badge and then a peyton game worn shield that could be kinda tight yeah but yeah i i don't know who the who the demos there but wild cards so many damn cards that i've seen and i like i just gloss over them i probably missed good stuff too because yeah i have not spent the time to really dial in my saved searches to filter out all of that i end up just like clicking on bears one of one or something and i'm just like oh fifty cards that i feel like i've seen before but i don't care about dude if if there's a a legitimate one of one in my colts one of one search i almost like throw a party and celebrate at this point it's just all that kind of stuff all the time it's a decent strategy because it's got us to there's there's a someone who asked a question about it and we're sitting here giving the free promo but yeah i'm right it here's a service idea if you wanna come clean up all of my safe searches to get all of that stuff out of it so i can just look at the cards that i wanna look at i might have a might have a summer job for you here's here's the question or a thought exercise you can only check like you haven't checked ebay in a week and you can only check five of your saved searches what saved searches do you click on or if you're ever in a crunch because there are times where i'm like alright i got five minutes i can look at saved searches there are certain ones that yep you know i'm targeting first yeah but yeah what what are some of your top if you wanna reveal you don't have to yeah i'll reveal you know i'm looking at colts one of one i'm looking at peyton manning one of one i'm looking at roman reigns and john cena one of one i'm looking at one more i like i like the black finite prism black finite one of one like i just i even if i'm not buying anything that's what i like looking at the most so those those would probably be my like top five yeah that finite's up there prism black finite i have a lot of like chicago bears gold prism i'd probably i always like to check-in on that what else is on here caleb williams one zero one yeah two thousand two hundred refractor no i don't pin anything you got a pin dude you got the pinning is the pinning has changed my life that's is there a limit of pinning maybe a hundred or so okay well yeah that's some good curation that i should probably be doing i need to yeah i need to do some safe search optimization on this end and then also being able to do some like card ladder search optimization i feel like i'm not like sometimes i'll listen to card ladder confidential shout out card ladder confidential or other or crossover and hear them talk about some of the like modifications they put in when they're like doing a search and i'm like what is this wizardry like i'm just not i'm not there with like tape removing certain words and like doing certain filters so i need maybe i need a card letter workshop this is what i would tell i would say everyone should spend some time doing this at some point imagine yourself inheriting a big windfall of money let's say you got enough money that you can go make some card purchases and not even consider what i would recommend because i've been doing this recently i go back and just clean up my watch list and you will like land on like three or four cards and be like if i ever sold something or had a bunch of cards like i need to make a move on these cards but sometimes those cards that like we that are just sitting there are the cards we want most but it's almost like we forget about them at times just because they've been there for so long yep a hundred percent there's you gotta just buy those cards we were talking about this a couple weeks ago like if there's something that you keep coming back to it's sitting on your watch list and it has fifty watchers and is in three carts it's like just buy the card buy it you're gonna you're gonna want it because the feeling of when a card like that disappears is just gut wrenching like i had the chance and i just wasn't why didn't i do it why didn't i do it alright good questions everyone thank you very much let's move into the last couple things we'll get out of here nfl check-in any any thoughts as we're approaching ready for pre right ready i was in the stadium it was just oh i was all excited walked in i was like i can't believe we're back and then watched just like stinky like three third stringers trying to make the team play and i was like the colts got the the colts starters like won the practice against the falcons both days and then they literally look like they couldn't even i was like what is going on so like i'm ready for preseason to be over with it was nice to be back in lucas oil but i did i closed the loop on the the jersey purchase i did did make a decision and i just you know i just felt compelled i was like i gotta gotta go with my guy and i i i grabbed the daniel jones blue seventeen that's that's what i'll be i'll be rocking which probably means that he'll be hurt within the first three games but i justified it by being like dude i've got a carson wentz jersey a matt ryan jersey like daniel jones is by far and away the best quarterback we've had since andrew luck so it's time to buy his jersey so got a got a daniel jones jersey but never in a million years when he was on the giants would i imagine myself owning a daniel jones jersey but here we are if five years ago someone said to you no way five years you're gonna be buying a daniel jones jersey you'd be so excited about it you should've got the like because he's number seventeen but instead of jones get dimes on the back get a little custom i see dine of seventeen could have been cool but no daniel jones the classic but you may have sealed the fate though he's getting hurt week four well at least my guy's not on the front of madden this year that's true there's person purses galore on the football card pod yeah preseason just get me get me to the real thing i'm so ready for it like after the bears they blew out the browns in week one of the preseason and in my mind i'm like hell yeah this is like indicative of who this team is this team is on all levels like everyone on this roster is good this team is ready to to roll like preseason is a great indicator of success and then the bears got blown out in week two by the bengals and i was just like preseason doesn't mean anything these guys aren't really trying this is we're not showing our full hand like this this means nothing so yeah already kind of on the mini roller coaster on the on the kitty beast when when the when the colts won the super bowl they were o and four in the preseason the colts won't always lose in every preseason game and then intentionally and then start in thirteen and o that was like a decade straight the colts win preseason games and then they i i you know i it is a time john that i definitely took for granted that's for damn sure yep alright let's talk about some sales alright we got some big ones this week a card we've talked about finally sold and that is the ninety eight skybox metal universe peyton manning gym master rookie one of one in a psa eight five sold on heritage for four hundred and fourteen thousand eight hundred dollars how are you doing what's your reaction to that lower than i thought i think coming into it initially the the estimate was like five hundred k and i feel like that felt right but then after those big josh allen sales kind of talked myself into this going north of five hundred k and could even go higher like this is arguably the best one of one of peyton manning his most important rookie card and most significant rookie card however you wanna call it so yeah i don't know i know four hundred and fourteen thousand dollars is a large sum of money but feels like a deal i think yeah i thought it i thought it was gonna hit half a million i think the one thing you have to consider is based on single card manning sales this card doubles the previous high which is a pretty big pretty big leap so that stands out you know i i think there i've seen a lot of people like saying shout out college cards like the college jersey but for me i think that's the the limiting factor of this card i think and this is no disrespect to the university of tennessee this is no disrespect to college collecting i love college collecting i'm pro college sports and cards but i i feel like you put manning in an eighteen colts jersey this card is is is surpassing half a million yeah and maybe throwing instead of scrambling per perhaps perhaps or just yeah cool notorious runner peyton manning running seen pictured scrambling on this card and yeah i agree though if this were a colts jersey i think it's far and away goes goes beyond four hundred and fourteen but so do we need the nba silver sticker have to so you gotta you gotta know i'm a one of one i'll never understand it on a one on one i it's also the bottom percent yeah i just i that is one area i just cannot dive into the stickers but i think this is you know this it's a it's a monster sale in football cards and it's it's you know i think people had certain expectations but is a is a big big big card so excited to see it finally off the board we move over to a card we know and know well but this sale is certainly outstanding it is the highest sale in this cop in in this grade we've got the thirty five national chico bronco nagurski psa seven sold for four hundred and two thousand six hundred the previous high in a seven was a hundred and five thousand dollars in august of twenty two so invest in bronco nagurski yep wow what a win for football guys when a bronco card almost outsells the manny yeah man it's crazy yeah what a massive sale for this for a seven there's an eight five out there that sold for like that card ladder had valued or close to a million so seeing bronco nogarski become a million dollar man would be would be awesome and a huge win for football fans i wish this so bad just was bears branded versus minnesota another college one yeah another college card back to back college cards college football card podcast what are we doing here good call out i didn't as i was putting these together i didn't even see that but yeah that is wild like what if he was in on the bears would it change things i think that's an interesting thing to think about we go over to a seventy six topps walter payton rookie autograph it is a authentic auto and a psa six it's a big old sale it sold for a hundred and twenty two thousand dollars but how cool is this item how you've got a car that's a classic that everyone knows well and then you just see the auto on top of it it's like this is the type of stuff i'm like ip auto all the way yeah this is sick i can't that is such a high sale i didn't realize he probably doesn't have many autographed rookies if this six auto authentic grade is selling for a hundred and twenty two thousand dollars that's a wild sale i do wish my one note i wish this was like a blue ballpoint pen versus the black sharpie i don't know i think that something about the ballpoint pen looks good on a more vintage card like this versus the sharpie but regardless awesome card don't collect running backs alright we move over to twenty nineteen prism larry fitzgerald black finite one of one and a psa nine selling for nineteen thousand eight hundred dollars very strong sale for a larry fitzgerald black finite yeah this card twenty nineteen not my favorite year of prism but the finites are sick and this card looks like it's made for a black finite of larry fitzgerald like the colors on this like the design of the card looks like the cardinal's jerseys kind of with like the shoulder red shoulder pads the lines in there i don't know this just what a sick card i like to look at the eyes of the individuals on cards and there's something about a guy who's looking out into the open field but it looks like he's staring off into space off the card and just you can see the gold captain's patch on fitzgerald's jersey the way he's getting ready to tuck the ball and we all know how fitzgerald runs in the open field like this this card screams action and just really real not twenty nineteen not my favorite year but agree the finites hit a little different we close it out with the two thousand nine playoff absolute memorabilia matthew stafford rookie premium materials auto nfl shield one of one eighteen thousand six hundred dollars to me this would be a almost perfect card if it wasn't a sticker auto but just it's got all the elements yeah equipment shield sick shield window correct size also sick the we talked about this before but the early nfl shield cards always had the craziest backgrounds i'm doing way too much with the just graphics back there like if this were just nice clean white you know national treasures type presentation i think i'd like it even more than having all the different lines and colors and kinda distractions in the background but and if it were on card even more this would become undoubtedly one of his best cards but all of that aside this is still pretty sick i do like the fact that you get kinda like the full body shot of stafford which is not something you typically see on a full equipment shield so i think that element's cool but yeah there's there's a there's a lot going on in the background but big sale nonetheless shout out card ladder for providing the sales data for marketwatch shout out card ladder alright collecting updates card call out we'll get out of here collecting updates any current projects you're focusing resources on brett nothing new to report how about you nothing new no pickups selling cards to buying cards is appearance on the football card pod sounds kinda too good to be true so we'll we'll see how many people we can get in here and then then there's nothing better than some good old natural trolling and ribbing as we watch the leaderboard unfold as the season progresses i can't wait i can't wait to be eliminated after a week i hope i'm i'm looking to survive week one that's what that's all i'm saying luckily you're just picking so not even the spread is nice like everyone even though it's that's harder to do you're picking winners yeah you're just picking winners and just stacking so it's like you to come out on top and i have to shout out lane commissioner lane for setting all this up he reached out in the dms has set up pickums before and he got this going for us where any any complaints you
