The Football Card Podcast #61: Paper Football Cards Are Back

hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stack and slab himself brett how you doing long as i remember the rain been coming down cloud of a mystery pouring confusion on the ground wanted to quote creedence clearwater revival nineteen seventy who will stop the rain because the rain is stopped now here in indianapolis but it has been going and going and going and the floods are happening and all the things i can never remember it raining so much in this city but yeah that song has been ringing in my head i'm well outside of the rain i actually had to pay someone to cut my grass because my lawnmower died trying to cut wet grass it was just a mess so the guy was cutting our neighbor's lawn and we're just like how much do you want to the guy could have said like dude it's three hundred dollars i'd have been like yeah three hundred dollars i just needed that cut so glad we're dry right now as we record i will be attending a football game although a preseason football game this saturday here in indianapolis so excited to walk into lucas oil stadium i'm excited to go to the store where every year they when they tell me the total my mind is just blown i'm like man i could have bought a sick card with all that i i i do this every year i just go in and i you know buy a new jersey i'm a jersey guy i still buy jerseys i buy jerseys shirts stuff for the kids so yeah man i'm excited to be back glad even if the rain continues that we have the retractable roof so it'll be closed up and i can stay dry while i'm watching some second and third stringers and some guys trying to fight for their lives to try to make the team yeah wow i was thinking little if it keeps on raining the levee's gonna break that's where where my head was going because it was looking dire there for a second i'm right over by rocky ripple you know little south of broad ripple and the canal is right up the street from me and the river right beyond that and i don't know i don't know if it was i just wasn't ever like that worried i was seeing like panic going on around and like getting alerts and all that but i was like it it'll be fine and then what was it saturday morning woke up and some neighbors from up the street had texted my wife and i in like this group chat they were like do you we we have our bags packed are you guys ready in case i was like in case of what like what is happening like so then i'm trying to catch up on i was like is is this imminent is there really like what do you mean your bags are packed but it was fine there's you know different levels of concern from different people totally understandable but it it that the footage is crazy from some of the the overflow and what's going on in hamilton county that that quarry filling with water now that's content right there i mean how many how many family group chats got sent that video i think i think every family group chat in the central indiana area someone sent that video for sure here's a nine billion gallon quarry that's empty you wanna watch it get filled with water yep sure do put a little time lapse on there i'll watch this whole thing oh boy you know it's you you see all this rain and it tied into the the football card podcast and football cards and football i it always blows my mind and we we've referenced this a lot because both our teams are in this game but super bowl forty one and just the fact that it was raining during that game and you had prince playing purple rain at halftime which was just so poetic in in a way but i just i just i i don't know how the guys do it especially the quarterbacks like how do you throw the ball down the field when it's pouring rain outside and you've gotta grip the ball i'll never understand that every year there's like the one game where it's raining so hard that you can't even see and i'm just like how do they even do this yeah i mean the bears are the answer there i think they had six turnovers and that game could not hold on to the ball yes that yeah no the the elements are incredible that football players play through but and this truly is a good kickoff to big ugly autumn yes it's it's wet it's ugly it's not pretty it's get down there and get back to the basics run the damn ball record the damn pod that's what we're doing here at the football card pod episode sixty one sixty one weeks straight no days off no days off the the the essential elements of football really get directed back to these big uglies holding the line holding their position regardless of elements and then the ball getting handed off to an individual to get as many yards as possible like i'm very pro run game i'm glad the running backs are getting paid shout out jonathan taylor for getting more money shout out all the running backs the market that i never understood that era when it was like we're not gonna pay these guys it's like these guys are these guys do so much they they block they they they you hand the ball off to him twenty times a game they're some of our favorite players to talk about so this this will be known for the audience and i hope you stand by this i know you're a running back guy you'll stand by this but we are pro running backs getting paid and getting paid lots of money here we're we're running back supporters even though it's big big ugly autumn the running backs are tied to the hip with these big ugly so shout out all the running backs getting paid yes absolutely get the bag there was yeah that moment where running back by committee was becoming more of a thing and like there was like the death of the the argument work it felt like and that no no no not so fast you need you need the running backs and the running backs need the everyone the run sets up everything the run sets up play action the run milks the clock the run everything you know so we're here big ugly autumn episode sixty one i think we got some opening topics to discuss i think a new release is on top of mind yeah so i was just pouring through the tops new release section and realized because i was like what's happening with football cards right now you know it's it's simmered off after the chrome release and i'm like we've got football guys hitting the field what what what kind of releases we got going on and realized that let's see here the day this goes live the twenty twenty six topps flagship football releases august twenty one it marks the return of fully licensed topps flagship nfl set after more than a decade and i think that is cool shout out paper football cards mhmm i i think there is maybe more excitement around paper cards than there has been so i wanted to get into that but what i really wanted to talk about is you're going to be seeing non like tops now cards but out of packs the first rookie cards of guys like fernando mendoza jeremiah love carnell tate and i don't know like i guess to kick it off like what do you think about this i guess these like paper flagship sets haven't even really been on my radar in a while but i know there was a big appetite for them with on the basketball side before chrome came out because people were jacked up that topps was backed with a fully licensed basketball product but i don't know what do you think that means for us football card collectors yeah i'm i'm pro paper based set honestly sometimes i think a paper base looks better than a chrome base like if i take it back to two thousand bowman football like brady rookie year i prefer like the paper bowman base card to the chrome base card because like a chrome base card i'm like you should just be a refractor but like a paper base card it's it just looks more clear the like registration on it is clearer than if it's like a chrome card without a refractor so i'm pro paper based and it also got me thinking about what was like the tops equivalent just regular tops equivalent during the panini era was that donerous like yes i would say donerous okay but but don no one cared about donerous paper no but if prism had a panini set i guess if there was like a panini paper set on card auto on cardano that wasn't like panini now or anything i i bet that would have been well received people would have liked that you know you bring up that bowman example and especially the brady it's a good one to point to you just look at that set and i'm not here to speculate that this will then happen with topps but you never topps paper flagship you never know but like that bowman set i i got a chance shout out my good friend paul at mortal kombat great human great person i gotta meet him in person for the first time at the national and every time i see him he always or or we talk we're always talking cards and i really associate him with the bowman brady rookie golds yeah which i still think this is maybe one of the most slept on cards in all of football cards but he he at one point had three of them so he he he questioned he's like why are people spending all this money on the the refractor or even like a psa ten when you could get out i think there's ninety nine copies you get ninety nine and he's like he was at a point where he was just like trying to buy him up but i don't know it's like what if fernando fernando mendoza is a national treasure by the way like he gave an interview about how his practice went and did i just love listening to this guy talk but it's like what if mendoza is like goes on this run and what if there's a parallel out of this flagship that is like the one of one or whatever or it could be out of ten or whatever but it is his first card that's out of a pack like does that that to me i think that carries some sort of historical way so i don't know i say all this to say like flagship's a very important element of baseball like tops and flagship baseball so we're in this new era where we've never really had a football flagship set so i'm very eager to see not how this starts because we all know there'll be people breaking it everyone's gonna be jacked up everyone's gonna be spending buttloads of money but like the sustainability around this product i think will be important to watch absolutely it also there was it the tops watching the tops marketing machine is fascinating like with these new releases rolling out and then it i'm really noticing the and curious and there's no answer except only time will tell just the super short print case hit of it all where i feel like we're constantly shifting through new products new case hits and there's like even over the like right now alter egos in basketball is this thing like the alter egos people are after the alter egos but it just feels like kaiju was the hot thing you know just two months ago and before that it was like on football like the techmos and then there's like i don't know it's just every product it seems like there's this new case hit that is i i don't wanna say pumped it's just like promoted as like the new chase card and how fast the news cycle kinda turns over as these new products come out like i'm it just makes me curious as twenty twenty six topps football comes out what is going to be you know the the big chase from this product because it seems like the big chase from every product is really getting marketed and pushed and it'll just be interesting to see like when the dust settles in a couple years what collectors gravitate towards and what has longevity so i'm i'm always excited for a new release because i like seeing product get open i like seeing new types of cards get hit and people get excited but yeah just has me curious what'll stay there is a fun i think if i were which i i think it's very apparent that i'm not a case head guy but i think because of the repackers this cycle of case hits will always hold some level of liquidity mhmm but it is inter good interesting observation i've never really thought about like who's talking about kaijus now that's how people were talking about months ago but i think when the i i'm having a complete brain fart right now i just lost my i lost my train of thought this is the second time i i've i feel i feel like i'm getting something from my daughter and it's messing with my the itchy throat this morning it's a bad sign yeah it is the big ugly autumn it is the the yeah like who's talking about kaijus anymore and i start i was trying to do some digging i'm like are they like dipping it all or same thing with tecmo's and the prices seem to be holding but they're just and maybe it's just my algorithm it just seems like right now it's like alter egos everything alter egos or i'm just seeing tons and tons of that and i just know once this product drops it's just gonna switch to there's gonna be a new new hot focus which totally makes sense i understand that's how a new cycle works my my my brain worked again and i remember what i was gonna bring up and wanna get your feedback on this and that is regardless of if you like paper or not there's something special around a new product dropping and seeing a guy on your team who is new in new jersey yes in that set that is when i saw sauce gardener and colt stuff in the last chrome release dude it was like it lit me up inside i was like oh this is sick i i gotta get something so i think that's the fun part if you're you know a team collector you're you're always gonna get something new that's gonna you know tickle tickles your your fancy a little bit oh yeah no there's because like some photos got released and there's like a variation luther burden card that i'm like oh this looks awesome like he's got is that where he's smiling yeah he's smiling he's got grills in this is sick i need this card it looks like edron james with the gold teeth back in the day i just love luther burton so yes there it's excited for football season excited for new releases that and like how cool that there's a product coming out with fernando mendoza rookies leading perfectly into the season like where you can chase a mendoza rookie in real time i feel like the last couple years of panini there wasn't i guess maybe don russ was out but it it felt like everything was there was that trickle down delay for years after covid where we weren't getting a football product with like that rookie class in real time as the season was kicking off so the timing for this feels great no doubt excited to see those rips and some hits shared big ugly autumn we are here excited to get into it let's get into it episode sixty one big ugly autumn two hall of famers have worn sixty one curly culp and bill george bill george i'll just shout out bill george real quick former chicago bear a linebacker played for the bears from nineteen fifty two to nineteen sixty five eight time first team all pro at middle linebacker part of the nineteen sixty three nfl championship team it's just kinda like the first real legendary bears middle linebacker followed then not immediately but butkus singletary and urlacher four different middle linebackers are all in the hall of fame but bill george was kind of the first of them just kinda legendary where i like this on wikipedia it says he is among numerous legendary football players born in football rich western pennsylvania and that i got me thinking i'm like yeah there's a lot of lot of pennsylvania guys that have probably come up during that came up during linebacker summer and will come up during big ugly autumn and i don't know i think i would sit down and watch a full documentary about football rich western pennsylvania you kidding me that sounds awesome so i don't remember i i feel like there was an a decade or two ago where the narrative was the only good football players high school football and high school football players came from ohio pennsylvania and texas and then like florida was emerging there that seems like forever ago now like kids are sick everywhere basically but i remember where it was like these are the hotbeds these are where the guys are coming from they can practice year round outside but alright i just was searching western pennsylvania football players i didn't realize the cradle of quarterbacks is like kind of a nickname because joe montana is from there dan marino namath jim kelly johnny unitas and george blanda all played high school football in western pennsylvania that's crazy yep montana marino namath even though namath i think we've gone over overrated not that great that's that's just with that as that's cemented in football card podcast lore but then aaron donald also from penn hills high school curtis martin ty law jason taylor daryl rivas yeah aaron donald aaron donald coming back to the rams i don't like that that just we need to not do that we need that needs to not happen i'm less impacted by it but yeah i i so we'll get to the rams but i think one thing i would say if you go through and look at the history of pit football on the rosters like they have so many great like they're like a sneaky school with so many great nfl pros that have come through there i did that recently and it was like it blew my mind the the the rams thing is starting to feel a lot a lot like the the philadelphia seventy sixers thing to me where it's like there is so much hype so much attention so much like these are the best these are and i just i just i don't know man when it just never seems when there's that much like hype on a team before the season it just it's hard for it to end well so the rams are loaded they're a great team they probably should've you know been you know last year like i don't know it just i i'd be i'd be a little nervous i hate being in that position as a fan i hate it no the the expectations the reminds me of the eagles when the eagles yes exactly got everybody or like they got was it jovan curse and nabi assamore yes and like there was that sports illustrated cover it stunk yeah they're like dream team i think it was like a dream team sports illustrated cover with that team and at the time thinking this is gonna be amazing or the lakers when the lakers got dwight howard and steve bannon pull yes karl malone it should be fun yeah so the i don't know that on the bears front i'm worried i love ben johnson to death but him putting out on wax how he's like i want blowouts i want shootouts i wanna be the highest scoring offense like showing that they're striving for greatness i've just seen the quote card that says i want blowouts i want shutouts and i just know the bears are gonna get shut out and blown out one game and like that quote card is gonna be used against us so dreading dreading when that inevitably happens but yeah expectations are are high across across camps across you know everywhere the whole board everyone's ready for football season i cannot wait it's actually it's actually here it's all it's august twenty first right now friday august twenty first and guess what everyone football is right around the corner i wanna remind our loyal listeners that it is okay to be excited it is a to be overzealous this is the period to do it we only have a couple more weeks where you can be on cloud nine on top of the world spending hundreds of dollars at your team's pro shop because you're really excited before it all comes crashing down so enjoy this time where you're undefeated right now you are super bowl is in sight everyone has the same chance right now what team jersey are you buying this year it's a great question i am i am i'm a little on the so i'm on the fence i'm i'm there's there's four candidates my four candidates are alec pierce tyler warren daniel jones sauce gardner it's gonna be one of those guys i just gotta i gotta figure it out one of those guys do i i dude i i i love daniel jones i love everything he represents i'm so excited he's my quarterback he is just such a guy's guy the only problem why i'm not going nuts and buying his cards is because gotta worry about like this injury history of him and so it's like that's the scary thing about like there was a twenty nineteen rookie concourse select daniel jones that was up for auction last night i never looked what it ended but you know it got into the eleven hundreds territory and i was like i wanted to buy it so bad but i was like don't do it brett don't do it so trying to show restraint so i don't know i'll report back if i do buy a jersey what i come home with but it'll probably be one of those guys i feel like getting a nice brand new throwback like gary brackett kato june get a get a throwback football card pod guy or you probably have their jerseys in the store dude i have i've probably got thirty guys from that all that era hanging on i've got the i've got i went from i have the most random colts of all time because i really appreciated just getting weird with the jersey and getting guys that no one else have maybe we'll do an inventory check at some point on the pod but yeah people would be like who in the fuck is that guy and he's like it's okay that's the best i i love going to a game and just looking for the legendary polls like who's who did someone bust out that you know yeah dude i was i was i was peeing next to a guy in lucas oil during a game last season and i was washing my hands i look over because he was like you you know you're when you're at a game and you're pissing in a urinal and some guy starts talking to you about the game like it's completely appropriate territory to have a conversation with someone because you're at the game and they're talking about i'm like that was actually a friendly interaction i noticed he had like a colts jersey on so i'm gonna wash my hands i look in the mirror and he's got a taiwan haggler jersey on which is like the the biggest like pool he's like backup linebacker special teams guy and i like sat there and like washed my hands like a little longer so he we could continue the conversation i was like taiwan hagler and yeah it was great so yeah i'm i'm very pro random guy jerseys for sure got to there's a guy at a bears game last year who had a musid mohammed bears jersey on where on the back though in the last name mohammed letters were scratched out except for the letters u and mad at the end and i was like oh as as a troll and a bears fan who appreciates a deep cut like that's just the perfect jersey so that's amazing probably need to get one of those myself this season that's amazing i wanted to talk about a guy sixty one a bruising bard juan a lot nate newton and with the fun part about nate newton just dallas cowboy great i always thought this guy was a cowboy and so i dug into his history drafted to the redskins in eighty three then he got cut because he got hurt and it's like i can't imagine a world where nate newton got gets cut he gets cut he goes to the usfl and plays for the tampa bay bandits from nineteen eighty four to nineteen eighty five then the usfl collapsed so the cowboys are like let's get this guy he ends up playing from nineteen eighty six to nineteen ninety eight for the dallas cowboys has a swan song in ninety nine with the carolina panthers three time super bowl champion two time first team all pro nickname the kitchen inspired by william the refrigerator perry and on top of it he received a presidential pardon that was facilitated by jerry jones after he retired because he got caught up in a large scale marijuana trafficking case okay the kitchen nate newton i didn't know any of this i'm reading about him too first off when he got cut from the redskins he was on august twenty ninth anniversary coming up eighty three he was waived and was injured in a serious car accident on the same night he was cut so to bounce back from that pretty badass to then go on to still make it to the cowboys get signed win a bunch of super bowls but dang he also at one point owned fourteen pit bulls which actually probably isn't a great thing now that i'm thinking about the reasons for owning fourteen pit bulls it's probably not because he was necessarily a dog lover and but yeah he was he was also running some some kingpin shit out here and got a pardon shout out nate newton i he doesn't have many cars but check out this ninety one tops nate newton i just looked at this car i was like that this ninety one tops just brings me right back to being a kid and that design i hadn't seen in forever and he's just mean mugging the camera on the bench and i just was like man this is a hell of an eight newton yeah listed at six three three thirty five that's just a different type of human being that is that is a true big ugly autumn type guy right there definition definition alright should we get into some questions let's do it okay first up from leather helmet cards if you could go back to twenty eighteen with a thousand dollars and one mission buy the football cards you know will be worth a fortune today what are you buying and what ridiculous story are you telling the card shop owner to explain why you suddenly want fifty copies of the same rookie so i just glanced at what you selected and that's a great find i did a ancillary look at your subject and i just got kinda frustrated with my perusing through card liner and decided to go a different direction but i decided man it'd be fun to like check out in twenty eighteen uh-huh what what's some twenty twelve prism finites we're going for so this is what i would do i would have bought the jarrell rivas which i just saw on instagram recently someone has it it's sold for fifteen dollars and fifty cents and then the dez bryant sold for fifteen dollars and fifty one cents so a grand total of thirty one dollars and one cent and then i would i would take those cards and stash them away and then i would take the rest of the money and just be like the husband of the year be like hey i got a babysitter for the weekend we're going on a big weekend trip to chicago and staying at the nicest hotel for a night that's what i would do wow that twenty twelve riva sale the listing twenty twelve panini prizm darryl riva superfractor black one of one jets selling for fifteen dollars that's incredible this i had to like limit myself on this exercise because i was gonna find myself spending too long doing it like sorting on card ladder shout out card ladder sales during the year of twenty eighteen and then putting a max at a thousand dollars and then i was just typing in different names and mhmm combinations and one i found was a manning ninety eight pmg selling for nine hundred and eighteen dollars dang that's a nice card right now i i saw a leveon bell twenty thirteen prism finite that one sold for five hundred and thirty nine dollars that's a insane card one i'd love to own just incredible card for five hundred bucks to have just like a finite of a guy like that would be awesome and then i didn't write it down but there were a couple there was a a like brady twenty seventeen prism gold vinyl that was like three hundred dollars there's a lot of there was some mahomes stuff in that era but there's a lot you could do with a thousand dollars in twenty eighteen with this knowledge i wouldn't be going to a card shop buying fifty rookies like leather hammitt hart said though i'd be going for i i didn't even look i bet there's a i bet some green pmgs were selling easily under a grand in that era so going for something like that would would be where i'd end up and then whether how much cards had a second question a little double trouble this week if you could resurrect one football card product and bring it back exactly as it was what are you choosing i would i would choose i haven't decided the year yet exactly how it was makes me think that i needed to decide a year but i i i would love to see like licensed metal universe like now yeah that would be awesome i this was a football set i it's more thought of with basketball but exquisite if there was a brand new exquisite football set that just was dropping in a couple weeks that would be so awesome with like you know on card autos patch autos the whole thing thick cards give me that you think that might get the old stuff going yeah oh yeah i don't think the old stuff needs well exquisite football is an interesting case study and that's what that's that's what my point if if that feels like the the we've talked about it here and there but we don't talk about it all the time but it just it feels like a a sleeping giant in a way just based on i don't know what it is it's like there's this i don't wanna say disdain because that's a a a strong word but across the board in the football community it there just doesn't be the same appetite for upper deck football as obviously there is for upper deck basketball yeah and i feel like think we've kinda touched on it and i'm doing like a quick glance but they just didn't do a great job with like their shield stuff and their pet like i feel like it's a lot of combos like doubles and triples which basketball did but even like the second highest selling brady exquisite card of all time is a triple shield with him peyton and tony romo yeah you can't you can't miss on the tony romo if that was just a dual brady peyton that would be an insane card well when i think of upper deck football in that era like the first thing that comes to my mind is like peyton manning tom brady chad pennington and yeah brandon weeden quad auto like that that like that type of card yes they were doing so many quads and ox ox gotcha front and back where they were like oh how many autographs can we put on these bad boys that's what people want and i mean it's awesome on the basketball side when you have jordan kobe lebron like mhmm three that hit but but you even have like kobe jordan lebron and then you have like a unbelievable player like tracy mcgrady or vince car carter and you're like ah they shouldn't be on here you know what i mean yes a hundred percent there's there's a bunch of like lebron and then drew gooden like dual logo mats like damn it just make a make a lebron logo man here but exquisite football i would i would buy some of that up next up from steeler nation sports cards let's talk about the black parallels in twenty twenty five topps chrome rank them based on eye appeal and give us an opinion on what will be the long term chase true black sapphire geometric or wave in my opinion i think it's going to be the only low numbered parallel where the true isn't the most sought after this this just unlocks so many conversations you and i have had privately for so long so shout out this question for me it is unequivocally the black geometric i think number one the easy thing just line the cards up which one looks the coolest you nobody with a straight face can tell me that the black looks better than the black geometric it does not the black geometric is just is is got the aesthetic that i think motivates us as football card collectors the other thing i wanna say is that we're in a new different world like you can't have it both ways where say like oh well we gotta keep tradition alive even though we're in this new world i think there are people that say well because the black is the flagship and legacy it has to be the black it's like the configuration game is different i think the breakers delight configuration if i'm if i'm buying into a break i'm not going to be buying into the hobbybox break i'm going to be buying into the black or into the breakers delight because they produce the geometrics and those cards are far superior in my opinion than anything else they look like the finites they just hit different so i have shared a lot there but i that's my opinion i they're out of ten which is not too many either anyways and it's just i don't know i think they're the best cards in topps chrome twenty twenty five best looking cards yeah i agree i they're i'm drawn to them same reasons like oh this looks like the finite it's still out of ten like a prism gold so it has like those two features that i enjoyed collecting in the panini era the they they look really good i think the sapphires look cool too i think the true black just feels a little flat i don't know it just doesn't i i want a little something on it i've never liked the wave pattern with any color really it just doesn't do it for me so i'd kinda i'd probably if i'm ranking them i'd go like geometric sapphire true and then wave would probably if if if it's going to be just like black to me it feels like and it doesn't have a one of one associated with it it just it feels like something is missing yes next up from cards and cardio favorite experiences visiting an opposing stadium and watching your team i would say that this one was easy for me twenty thirteen i went to tennessee for my bachelor party we did did did nashville and the reason we were there is because the colts were playing the titans on thursday night football and you know you have twenty dudes who are just completely inebriated cheering for the boys we took over man we just people hated us and we won and it was just a wonderful night and you take that experience leaving a stadium on the road where we're gonna be there for a few days and you leave that stadium and you hit you know all the honky honky tonk bars in nashville i mean mhmm what a what a time so i i've i had a stretch where i went to road games every year but that one definitely stands out to me as being the most memorable that's awesome what a time i actually have not been to a bears road game i act i take that back i went to the bears colts preseason game the first ever game in lucas oil it was like that preseason game but one that jumped out to mind when i was a freshman at college at ball state university the football team had started out twelve and o which was electric and when they were ten and o i believe they played at central michigan and we went up to that game to watch them play central michigan they won ball state won it was sick and looking back though a young antonio brown was on that central michigan team he had eight catches for sixty one yards so that's interesting to see that legendary nfl player legendary football card pod guy antonio brown was on the field that day but no i need to get to some more road games i need to go to lambeau i have to go up there maybe it's this year probably not this year but one of these days bears packers at lambeau is definitely on the bucket list the notre dame fighting irish are starting their season off at lambeau against the wisconsin badgers and if i didn't have three children i'd be there awesome next up from bang cards forty one who wins a no holds barred match between concrete charlie and mankind it's a pretty good go ahead what a question i i was thinking like i'm very high on concrete charlie right now like coming off last episode i'm very high on concrete chuck but mankind would hold his own like mankind isn't going down without a fight so that would be a pretty pretty great matchup that i would watch i'd pay i'd pay for that pay per view and i'd be happy probably either way you know when i first read this question it said concrete charlie versus mankin and i didn't i there was no d on man yeah and so i was just like who who's mankin i was like concrete charlie for sure but now that i know it's mankind this has got me thinking no holds barred is kind of mankind's specialty if if you said boiler room bra i would say mankind for sure i would say mankind is going to take concrete charlie to the limits pertaining to the limits but concrete charlie that this this this match is made to get mankind to take the the massive bump in that massive bump whatever it may be tossed off of the cage through a table you know cinder block to the head tacks whatever it is mankind's going down concrete he's gonna be staring up at the lights all bloodied and concrete charlie i just see this like him in the middle of the ring over mankind's body just like blood dripping from his hands maybe blood dripping from his face and it's just like man this this concrete charlie so just he's he's one of a kind that's that's how i see it happening wow mankin mankin mankin because i made a typo that's great yeah it would not be an easy match it would be a marathon like they'd both be bloodied but then chuck hitting mankind with the concrete mixer finishing move and then great finisher one two three blood everywhere yeah what a what a match i'd watch that and then the the second part of the question is what about i here's another typo i had what about trent dilfer versus gold dust and i had written trend dilfer trent told us gold dust gold dust all day gold was the androgynous one that's how vince mcmahon would when he the character was forming he's like he's androgynous by the way great wrestlemania match with goldust and rowdy piper that that match is incredible hollywood brawl trent dilfer's just stinks i'm i'm going goldust he's gonna give him the shattered dreams it's over it's over speaking of trent dilfer i have results from the football card pod poll in which a follow-up to our clip last week where we asked the audience dan marino's career or trent dilfer's career and dan marino took down trent dilfer in the polls sixty four percent or ninety four percent to six percent wow for dilfer including it's funny you can look at who voted for what and i'm like who voted for are you exposing them yeah i'm i'm gonna expose him i was about to post this to the story because trent dilfer one of the votes is from marino collector that's i love that sounds about right i love i love that and then marino also took down joe facco eighty percent to twenty percent so a little more people getting behind cool joe but still marino with that very convincing win so marino was a star he was like a football star and flacco was not a star marino for sure was a star he was in ace ventura yeah exactly isotoners yeah you're weird guys what a great movie so good i need to i need to show that to my daughter she's about to turn three i think she's of age to see some yeah her pet detective alright but just final note on that is just the fact that you can position what a run tone loc was having during that era oh like like funky cold medina like let's just run over and be an ace ventura so good blank check wasn't he in blank check yeah yeah he's got that raspy boys oh he's in heat too god yeah tone loke was on a unstoppable run what's up tone loke the deion sanders of entertainment oh could do it all alright there are tomote cards out there hi tomote card is a pop century signature super fracture sold in april of twenty twenty three for two hundred and twenty five dollars leaf pop century signatures and then oh ninety one pro set the o m t v raps tone loc psa ten pop one sold for a hundred dollars three weeks ago that's it yeah i would we missed our chance man pop one psa ten fresh cert that's that's pretty cool i might have to go on a deep dive of umtb rap's psa tens because there's some great great cards out there there is yo umtb raps was an institution man absolutely alright last question from bolt card crew who is the greatest tight end of all time i like this i like just a classic who's the best something that we can spitball i took it in a direction of i was like who's the best tight end i've ever seen play like or felt like they're unstoppable and i kept coming back to like twenty eleven jimmy graham i just remember watching jimmy graham in twenty eleven twenty thirteen i was like this guy's on stop like what you can't do anything and breeze is just throwing dots to him nonstop i was watching highlight reels last night and bree also just bring made me remember how good drew brees was again we talked about this the other day but he's just throwing for five thousand yards every year but twenty eleven jimmy graham not talking about whole career just at a peak i i think twenty eleven jimmy graham has a case as greatest tight end of all time yeah just from a pass catching perspective i had him on fantasy that year actually and it was just not fair it was he was scoring so many touchdowns but i i did the pro football reference a v i i first said it's gotta be tony gonzalez and then i i went and did the pro football reference thing and dude his tony gonzalez's stats are just absolutely outrageous he he had one thousand three hundred and twenty five yards fifteen thousand one hundred and twenty seven receptions a hundred and eleven touchdowns his hall of fame meter is a hundred and ninety five point four three the next closest is travis kelce with a hundred and forty yeah so i'm gonna tony gonzalez man i just he was he was impossible to defend he just seems like the from a statistical perspective he seems like the clear cut runaway greatest tight end of all time yeah that is hard to argue fifteen thousand yards a hundred and eleven times tight end dude that's crazy crazy and then is that one two three four five five first team all pro six first team all pros that's what an impressive run for the chief and you got your plan there with the all pro you got gates and whitten and shannon sharp and like a little gronk in that time zone so like that's like the air like we're not there anymore we were in an era of the tight end where like the best of the best tight ends were playing like you can even throw like jimmy graham's like peaks during that those times like yeah man that that was a special time to be a tight end that was i'm looking up highest selling tony gonzalez card of all time is so are there two tony gonzales' or is this oh he's just wearing well there's a nineteen sixty nine tony gonzalez baseball card ninety seven tony gonzalez rookie pmg green sold for sixty seven hundred dollars in october of twenty twenty seems like his highest card should be higher yeah and he's wearing what is that yeah california jersey so he's wearing a college uniform in that photo his highest let's see chiefs card is his ninety seven rubies sold for six grand in september of twenty twenty four psa six if his prism black if his if his finite came out from twenty twelve right now that would do well he's in falcons gear but still i think he had an a nice little run with atlanta yeah oh yeah yeah let's see that card i feel like i it's i've seen that on instagram yeah has that bit yeah i'm with i've seen it for sure too so can't remember who has it but awesome card awesome career shout out tony g alright thank you everyone for questions another good batch there there were more coming in everyone's asking good questions lately and we're getting more and more so appreciate you all question ask for the year is still up in the air but it's gonna come down to the wire next up nfl check-in any nfl news you're eager to talk about i just wanna say it's there was this long speculation of based on shane steichen and keenan allen's relationship that keenan allen would end up in indianapolis and i was like i hope this happens we we we need another receiver we need another receiver with experience and it happened so one year deal eight milli you got alec pierce josh downs tyler warren keenan allen and jonathan taylor like that's daniel jones behind center like i'm i'm i'm i'm pretty okay with that rolling that out at the beginning of the year i'm like that that squad can score some points so i've always really appreciated keenan allen i think you know if you need if you need a a third down like having a guy like that on top of like a tyler warren and a josh downs i can really help you convert third downs you know he's just he's obviously father time he's an older guy he's not gonna blow the roof off the defenses but i we just need someone steady and reliable and who knows the system and it just felt like it's like we were like i was like screaming with friends i was like why aren't we signing keenan allen and then i woke up one morning and there it was so keenan allen former chicago bear mhmm so yeah i'm i'm excited to have him on the squad perez legend he i love keenan allen i mean always had been a fan and then watching him that one season in chicago like him running routes you're gonna love just watching keenan allen routing dudes up high highlight clips even like even where he doesn't get catches like there's times where he just jukes people so bad it's so pretty to watch only gets first downs like they'll be third and five going to keenan allen is gonna be awesome and tyler warren right there behind like i don't know that the colts that core i like that core you got your rising star tight end you got the aging slot guy you got the burner on the outside you got a good running back danny dobbs make it happen how about this so keenan allen is seven receptions away from passing andre johnson at the number twelve spot he is fifty or sixteen receptions away from passing his wide receiver coach reggie wade wow that's pretty amazing yeah so he's had a hell of a career man yeah okay so just was trying to look up because i'm like he and allen last year had eighty one catches forty nine of them went for first downs and then i'm looking for his career he has one thousand fifty five catches six hundred and forty nine went for first downs i don't know at all if that's a good ratio or like what another ratio is so i looked up julio jones who in his career only had nine hundred fourteen catches so keenan surpassed him for thirteen thousand yards six hundred and forty six first downs so my hypothesis was wrong i was thinking keenan was at a higher rate getting first downs but i guess for a receiver a lot of the times if you're catching a ball it's for a first down and you're getting at least ten yards or sure but no keenan allen in like third in shorts he can just get open it's so awesome so he'll he'll be fun to watch what about you anything on your mind i watched the bears put up a shit ton of points in the preseason game yeah i like that and drop it thirty four on on the browns no i'm excited can't wait the the ben johnson quotes and all that was like the top of i feel like bears combo of him just saying he wants super bowls in the highest scoring offense which as a fan is what i want him to hear talk that shit but like it just makes me worried again i'm just i haven't watched two successful bear seasons in a row in twenty years so i just wanna just wanna see it play out on the field before i get too excited i know now is the time to get excited but i feel like last year was playing with like house money a little bit there was no expectations they started o and two and i was just like whatever i'm just gonna enjoy this ride and so now that there's expectations it's a little less worry free and i just they can't be starting o and three the people are gonna be panicking so i just want the team to come out start strong and silence the haters the haters and doubters of which there are many should we talk a little market watch yeah we got some market watch brought to you by our good friends at card ladder we are starting off in the year nineteen seventy eight with the topps tony dorsett rookie psa ten pop thirteen selling on golden for thirty five thousand five hundred and fifty four dollars interestingly enough it is the highest sale of all time for this card and there was one that sold in may may fifteenth of this year for twenty four k so there's eleven k come up in a short time frame are people excited about these low population hall of famers or what that just seems like a big come up but tony dorsett legendary cowboys running back cool card how you doing psa ten tony dorsett for thirty five k pop thirteen psa ten tone loc up one for a hundred all i'm thinking about is tone loc right now this tony dorsett sale is paving the way from from seventy eight to ninety one that card's awesome i think we've been talking about it yes for sixty episodes about it i try to plug them in when i find them and card ladder posted this as a graphic i caught it last night and i was like i gotta integrate this into the the episode it's never done until we hit record yeah low pop vintage there's something there and tony dorsett was an absolute beast i mean we love running backs but yeah just had a great career believe no he was never mvp but awesome career for tony dorsett hall of famer cool card we we move over to the twenty sixteen panini select patrick mahomes the second twenty seventeen the xrc gold out of select psa ten this is a population one i love this card man i think this card is so sick his card sold a golden for a hundred and seventy thousand eight hundred dollars which isn't the highest selling sale of all time in twenty twenty it sold for a hundred ninety two k but yeah man this card rocks man a pop one in it too it's just sick yeah that card that just looks awesome the the photo the close-up that year of select i mean that gold looks like it's golden so that really really awesome card there what's your position on xrcs are you a fan i do like xrcs i feel like i haven't loved the designs lately they did the like the corners of this last year aren't gold corners are like silver i just give me gold give me more gold so like i do not at all like dislike it as a concept i think it's a cool concept i don't have many of them but no cool card and when they look like this like this card looks awesome i think there was they're just recently they haven't the gold batch was getting diluted i mean i feel like that across all of panini's stuff there towards the end but this i mean this photo right here this scam looks awesome that's a great card and so now that is mahomes a good buy right now mahomes might be a good buy right now we're not financial advisers here at the football card pod but i feel like no one's talking about mahomes because he got injured and you know the chiefs are kind of have mild expectations but he's still i'd say the the best quarterback in the nfl like he's patrick mahomes so i don't know yeah it's interesting how the conversation has shifted a little bit to josh allen being the best player in the nfl because mahomes got hurt last year this always seems to happen mhmm regardless of what you think mahomes has the credentials the credentials were mostly because of him so if you're thinking about like good places to store value mahomes has gotta be the the active nfl players mahomes has to be the front runner by a mile yeah like this is it's always he'll his career will always be compared to brady but this is always like the shades of brady and the patriots where there'd be one kind of down year yes they never really had a down year but there'd just be like the cincinnati game type stuff where it's like oh is this the end of the patriots dynasty and then they somehow come back make the playoffs win a super bowl and you're like of course like this is how it goes and that's what it feels like with the chiefs right now is oh is mahomes over is andy reid over is like this the end of the chiefs and it's like patrick mahomes is thirty years old that'd be fine yeah yeah he's gonna be fine he's gonna have so much time here's a question for you yeah let's say mahomes plays until he's forty ten seasons left how many super bowls does he tack onto the resume if he had a gun to your head two yeah i think two is it's gotta be over under like two and a half yeah i just i've seen this before or i've just remember the brady era so well of like brady era so well where you're thinking it betting against brady and then he just comes and they win because it's like the best teams win and i think andy reid is a great coach i think mahomes is a great quarterback i think they'll get the right pieces around him and they'll be good and they'll be contenders they'll be contenders as long as like that duo is there in kansas city i feel like it it's it's a well run organization and he got those super bowls so early in his career i think yeah i i think and then we're gonna get to like the mahomes like vintage mahomes era like cerebral assassin era like what matt stafford is right now where like watching matt stafford last year where you're like i know this guy is gonna just carve him up and throw for three touchdowns every single game and mahomes is gonna have one of those seasons where he'll be thirty five and we'll be like holy shit mahomes can just see everything and still has an arm and can still just tear up every defense so yeah he's got so much left in the tank twenty twelve twenty fourteen manning era where he was like he just he was so much smarter than everybody else on the field even though like his maybe his like skills his like physical stature was like slightly deteriorating it didn't matter just because he knew how to get everybody open and get the ball there yeah that's watching those jimmy graham highlights last night like the saints offense with brees where when a quarterback can just do whatever they want it's so fun to watch the head fakes dude you remember the breeze like you you would like he would like fake the the announcers off and then like jimmy graham would be wide open in the corner of the end zone it was unreal and jimmy graham was just going up he was just throwing up shots and then there were so many plays where like in an open field defender makes contact with jimmy graham at like the six yard line and graham still scores just you weren't taking this guy down he's so big alright we move over to a quarterback you're familiar with twenty twenty four prism prism gold caleb williams b g s nine sold on alt for fifty two thousand five hundred dollars it is confirmed and it is confirmed to be the highest selling williams gold prism in a bgs slab the last one was a nine five in february that sold for forty eight k how about this this same card sold in october of twenty five for seventeen thousand dollars wow what was i doing should've been buying that caleb williams no i mean huge sale huge sale for a young unproven quarterback still for a gold prism rookie i mean awesome card not my favorite photo no it's just kinda it's the empty stands in the background and the flat footed he's he's a guy on the go yeah the flat footing yeah but not as much as like the reminder that this is just an empty stadium and yeah you could see the siege yeah you can literally see that it's not a game i think is what bugs me more but what i'm also interested in is currently at auction is his finite at oh wow is on fanatics premier right now it currently in a psa nine currently sits at a price of eighty five thousand dollars yeah jackson darts rookie finite is also at fanatics right now in the same auction a psa ten and that is sitting at a hundred and sixty thousand dollars are you kidding me so darts finite right now is pretty much is double caleb williams at auction it'll be interesting to see if that caleb closes the gap or how that shakes out but just to i i mean i am well aware there's a lot of hype around caleb williams but seeing those two finite side by side and that darts twice caleb is another reminder that darts market is out of this world that's i thought you i thought you were gonna say yeah it's like five or ten k above the cable hundred and sixty plus premium so that's oh my god pushing like we do yeah what are we doing right now speaking of finance at auction brady twenty thirteen yeah finance the yeah i i didn't bring that up because card ladder confidential will have been out and we like opened up the episode by talking about that card but yeah it's almost at a million dollars with how many days left yeah it'll couple weeks left and it's at nine hundred and fifty k right now so that that'll be a a fun one to watch at the end of last week i was we were talking about million dollar football cards and i said we haven't seen a brady finite in a while and then later that day i saw that this was up so that's a that's a football card pod popcorn type card it's been it's been that's been in the it's that card has been in the vortex yeah which is crazy it's like that card the status of that card the the fact that that's been vortexing it's it's kind of wild moving yeah alright we moved over to the nineteen ninety eight tops gold label class one black one of one rookie of peyton manning and a bgs eight five this is interesting because i was listening to chris mcgill's latest host cast where he was talking about the acquisition of his gold label manning and he's got the class three red one of one and in the podcast he mentioned this one's sitting on ebay right now and it it in some it it's sold so i'm wondering i feel like i'm going to know whoever bought this card whether it was chris himself or another character but seventeen thousand five hundred yeah pretty good one of one manning rookie card it's that i that to me seems like a pretty nice buy yeah i do not hate that buy at all i love talking a hundred and what for a jackson dart rookie yeah for jackson dart one zero one we're two hundred grand right now it's insane i think gold label's awesome i opened one pack as a kid and like the card stock was just so much superior to anything else i had ever opened so like all those cards were like i had a chad pennington marshall faulk dante culpepper like they're burned in my brain you remember it it was like a pack of like four cards and they just felt so much more premium than anything the way the the names are kinda like embossed on the front they're just awesome cards so i i understand the like nine one of ones of it all like i think hurts each of the one on ones a little bit but it's still i don't it does i don't it i don't think it hurts them or like i understand why then this is only seventeen only seventeen thousand dollars is because there's eight other one of ones versus the jackson dart is two hundred because there's not sure nine nine finites but this awesome card and i love the two pictures just really cool two thousand and eight national treasures calvin johnson prime material nfl logo shield one of one psa ten auto ten calvin johnson fourteen thousand thirty dollars i was like why is this card so cheap and then i was like oh it does have a sticker auto on it so maybe that has something to do with it but the card itself looks pretty damn cool yes that does the yeah sticker auto i think probably knocks it and we've talked about the patch windows for shields not always matching up but that at least fits most of the shield into the window and little snug little snug had to put a little more room to breathe on there in my opinion but that's a sick card ten ten too yeah ten ten's nice we close it out with the nineteen ninety nine ultra bruce smith masterpiece one of one selling a golden for ten thousand six hundred and fourteen dollars that just seemed cheap to me i mean we we've talked about how much stat sachs bruce smith has stacked up over his career he's in the iconic bills uniform he's literally doing a swim move about ready to eat a quarterback's soul ten grand i there i've seen there are crazier things i've seen people spend ten grand on this seemed to me like pretty affordable yeah this is such a sick card i love these masterpieces from ninety nine specifically the and it has me thinking if we remove the mahomes gold xrc mhmm the question becomes would you rather have all the cards we just talked about or the jackson dart finite they brought i bet it'd be all the cards we're talking about plus cash dude that's that's insane to consider yeah so this this card rules though shout out bruce smith legend bruce smith's gonna have his day where more people i feel like wake up to him and just all you have to do is go to pro football reference and yeah see that he has two hundred sacks and that that's the most all time shout out card ladder great group there making the sales marketwatch sales reporting easy for us so shout out shout out card ladder alright we'll get into collecting updates card call out get out of here any collecting updates on your end none for me how about you none for me as well currently in like selling cards to buy cards mode had some auctions go off but then this it got me thinking i have one point i wanted to bring up with just because this has come up before we've been asked before where like when you sell a card do you remove it from your instagram grid or like what is what is protocol there if you have posted the card and i've always liked that topic because i think it's just so funny it's like such a dumb thing to think about that it's like what are you thinking about oh i'm wondering if the football card that i posted on my football card alias account now that i sold it if i shouldn't take down the the lengthy instagram caption that i wrote about the football card it's just such a interesting thing that we do that we do all of this it's so funny to me but i kinda did like my own self analysis because the last time we talked about this i feel like there's some cards i keep up some cards i take down like and why is there any rhyme or reason behind that and i realized that it's a high percentage if i've graded the card myself mhmm i tend to leave it up because i feel like there's some there's a different level of attachment there like i'm part of that card story in a way that there's like who pulled it who graded it who owns it currently are kind of like pieces of that card's dna if you will so that i just thinking about that that the the grading process yourself creates a a next level attachment and then with selling cards i always appreciate if you do keep the card up even though you sold it when there is a caption update that says like sold or something like that i think that's a nice nice thing to do you don't have to i'm not trying to lay down any rules but just as i'm selling a few things it it is a topic that was on my mind that's a good topic i don't think there's a right or wrong way to do it i i think i default towards archiving the post mhmm but i also can't keep up and manage it so i'll do it in batches and there's some cards that exist that i've sold always like i can i'll never have it perfect just because i don't really care i don't care at all like i i like don't care i don't care what the yeah i i try to clean it up but there's a million other things that i have to worry about so i'm mhmm yeah as long as you're not like trying to deceive someone by like keeping a card up there that you don't have and i think like whatever way you wanna do it because i see the argument for like you wanna remember like the the the legacy you've had along the way and the cards you've acquired i get that and i also get like just wanting to out of sight out of mind getting rid of it so yeah i don't think there's a definitive way people do it they all have everyone has their own reasons for sure no and i was only thinking about it in the sense of because i use instagram to search for cards still and there'll be times where like i'm searching for a card i see someone has a card or it's on their instagram then i message and then find out they don't have it anymore which is fine but it's like if you would've just added sold to that caption i would've would've saved us a dm here and a lead but no yeah there's it's there's no right or wrong way and it's not even that big of a deal but ig search for cards has gotten better yes and like i i don't know i like it as a tool or even a set like because i love looking at cards like that's just my favorite thing to do and so even just like searching a player name or a set name and then scrolling through and that's how i find so many accounts too because i'll be like alright this person's post collects this player too hell yeah let me follow them i also like the new feature that instagram has implemented on the the feed or the main feed when you're scrolling and you'll see a sick card from someone and they will have like in the right corner it'll say follow back so not only do you see the sick card but then you it it signals to you that the person's already following you and dude i'm just like smashing follow on all those people i can't i am blown away every day by how many awesome like card accounts are out there that i just don't follow yet or don't so many where like all of a sudden i'll just stumble on a page and it's all these amazing cards that i would love like i'm happy to see and i can't wait to look through everything it's like how did i not and and we have two hundred mutual followers i'm like how did i miss this person so love seeing cards love talking about cards here on the football card podcast alright card call out last week six packs saw some good six packs this week do do we get into the fantasy favorites we're about to be in that season do we do fantasy studs of past like you know the any or i think we i think we do i think we maybe i've got an idea based on this talk track we just did and this could be good for everybody we wanna help everybody what if i wanna do fantasy guys and maybe this is next week mhmm but i what if we everybody playing the game goes and goes to a person that they follow who has a card that they love and then they share that card from that person so the game is you're you're elevating the role of other collectors that we can all follow give exposure to new people so we're all gonna start following each other because of this but it's also cool because you get to see the cards that other people appreciate yes like so share a favorite card in someone else's collection yes and by proxy you're sharing that collector you're chasing that collector that that's a great one that's that's why they pay you the big bucks alright so card call out share a favorite card from someone else's collection giving that collector some shine yes they put them on a pedestal we'll we'll share it on the football card pod maybe this is a week two the football card pod instagram i'll get on there and just follow i'll give people all the follows they want love it so we'll just follow back on the football card pod because need that feed full of awesome football cards and yeah thank you all for listening episode sixty one we did it we'll be back next week yeah thanks for listening
