over that is sad we are onto our next voyage here with episode sixty i'm assuming we'll be talking about some big uglies smashing people to the ground pancakes all those things it's very ominous in indianapolis right now as we record this it's been rainy and dreary but my spirits are high because we're back on the saddle talking about football cards and most importantly football cards how are you i'm good and yeah the the weather does kinda reflect the turn from linebacker summer playing around on the beach you know running in the sand to now it's dreary and cold and muddy and you're in the trenches like let's get down the you know frontline fall was a a recommendation or front five fall i think there was fat guy fall was in there don't wanna body shame i don't think body shame big ugly autumn not mad at this big ugly autumn that one's pretty good yeah we'll we'll noodle on it but and then i was doing some forecasting like are we gonna have wide receiver winner in the eight i think we might it might be kinda in like i guess i could probably do a math look at a calendar but probably maybe closer to february march is when we might hit the eighties wide receiver winter but we'll we'll see we'll see there's some maybe seventies wide receivers in the seventies i don't know i don't think i ever want it to end i just wanna i yeah i just i just wanna keep doing the numbers maybe we'll figure out a way to be creative and continue to do this but we still have a we got we got forty episodes to go forty episodes then i was thinking we could do super bowls and just do a nice little recap on that or i mean by the time we hit one again and actually we didn't do the numbers until around episode i think it was like eight or nine i'll have we'll have to look back is that right yeah that it's kinda started i think it was nine i think it started around nine but yeah so we have we need to do one through because we didn't do some big quarterback numbers early on like we didn't do eight i don't think so and four we didn't do like four you you probably did that strategically so we didn't have to talk about farf no need to talk about that pervert he gets enough airtime on here oh boy i i will tell you one thing that is something that i'm avoiding and i'm glad it's early but just the these this you've got these joint practices going on and you've got everyone on the internet making a big deal about like every little recorded play that is made and i'm just like i i don't need any of this i i don't need these losers in the comments talking about specific plays or players in a joint practice it's like this is this is not where i wanna be i wanna be here in the saddle on the football card podcast talking about football cards and football in a way that is meant for the loyal listener here so we we will respect the long game when it comes to commentary on on these guys and these teams i feel like that's what we owe this to our audience we this is not your doom scroll twitter machine here so i'm excited we're back i'm not excited for all the the so called analysts online who carve up literally every player and every play all the time yeah i mean we we know too much we see too much now there's things are some things are better left unseen i don't need to be watching zoomed in camera phone footage of caleb williams doing a bag drill where he's throwing balls in and like having people break it down and talk about his arm speed and things like that but i am it's all over the it's all over the algorithm we shouldn't have that though just give me give me one column that's giving me a report that's all i need that's right one column that's giving us a report and i've got a report that i felt like this story happened and it wasn't much of a story and i felt like it should be more of a story and we've got a platform that talks about football cards so we're gonna make it a part of the story here to kick off episode sixty so we're not starting with the big ugly we're starting with the high profile one of the highest profile players in the league but we will start here first of all before i share the news and the audience is probably like what the hell are they talking about do you do you agree that this this maybe didn't get the legs that a lot of these types of cards and sales get do you do you feel that way yeah i feel like it made some rounds in in our you know ecosystem but i didn't see it gain that much more traction so we are talking about the most expensive josh allen card ever sold which is his twenty eighteen national treasures platinum auto nfl shield one of one rookie and a psa eight point five it was a record breaking private sale at all for one point seven milli and so big card when i saw this actually i'm gonna read the card letter notes first card this is this is in card letter card letter says the private sale has has not been this is this is also important the card letter sale has not been verified by card ladder's research team from alt's instagram account alt just sold the one of one josh allen rookie card for one point seven million this twenty eighteen national treasures nfl seal one of one officially becomes the most expensive josh allen card of all time so i think that's important to note and i know that card ladder has a special relationship with all of its platforms and the way they report and confirm and validate or they're all a certain way and so that's just i think that's important to note mhmm but i also before we get into the card itself i think it's important to note where this card sits in terms of all time football card sales so we have the twenty seventeen nt platinum shield one of one rookie rpa of of patrick mahomes which sold i believe it was at the national right before the national in twenty twenty one it sold for four point three million dollars card ladder value on that is four point eight eight million you have the infamous justin herbert platinum nfl shield from nt and selling for one point eight million the card ladder value on that is not as attractive for five five hundred and sixty four thousand dollars and then tied with the allensale is the same car it's the same card again but joe burrow one of one rookie shield for one point seven million and the card ladder value on this is nine hundred and fifty thousand dollars so this allen card is the third highest tied with this borough football card ever reported or ever yeah reported on card ladder so it should be more of a story i think it should be more more recognized and that's what we're trying to do here but before we get in any further comments commentary what are you thinking yeah couple thoughts from this my first takeaway was this makes me much more interested in the peyton manning gem master auction that is going on at heritage right now where like if josh allen's biggest card is one point seven million dollars what is arguably peyton manning's biggest rookie card going to sell for i just seeing a sale like this while that manning is at auction is just interesting to me and like now i'm gonna watch that manning a little closer which i did see a video that yes had some shine had some good shine i liked it can we get technical because i think this is a good comparison here yes so i think it is important to note that and this is what i wanna get into is just the how much does a card's value go up when you have in comparison to other cards mhmm like when you have the memorabilia and the on card auto in a product like n t versus a different era a era that less i would imagine if you carved out the hobby pie of people who are participating spending big money in this hobby i would say i don't know what percentage it would be but a smaller percentage probably knows about metal universe yes enough to like put money into it as opposed to a more ultra modern product like national treasures which is widely recognized so like i i think the discussion for me is not like who's who which player's card should be valued more it's like i mean if if josh allen can sniff manning's career by the end of his career then man that that is something to be celebrated like manning's obviously an all time great but i think that the conversation's more around the cards themselves and what makes them up because they're both one of wands right and yes i think there there is something very like at the core if you look at those two cards side by side it's easier to understand why the nt shield auto is worth a lot of money compared to the gem master like if you know nothing about cards and you're looking at those two a lot of the manning gem masters value is tied up into things you can't see like it's the knowledge of metal it's the knowledge of gem masters and the knowledge of when they started and all that but like when you're looking at the josh allen it's like oh this has he signed it like people love autographs autographs signal something to people who maybe aren't even that deep into the hobby same thing with like a game worn patch i think that's kinda like at face value like those are two components that are easy to understand this player wore this thing this player signed this thing that's why it's so valuable so i think there's something there like and especially then when you're talking about the biggest sales of all time they're all that type of card they're not the shiny one of ones those tend to just not get as much love as these like nts and i bet if you look at and i know we have some sales coming up but even like his gold prism sold recently for a fraction of this and like what would the josh allen finite sell for right now i doubt it would sell for one point seven million i bet it would be less so yeah there is something that the like the hobby investors the mister shines of the world can look at a shield auto and understand why they should spend big money on that more easily than looking at like a shiny card where they have to like do a little more research and understanding to figure that out there's a there's a level of sophistication when it comes to the buyer and the people that are willing to spend this kind of money on a card like this and i it's what i like to do i like to study collector behavior i like to study the commentary and it's there at some point there will be some sort of graph and curve that is created to or graph that i would like or a visualization to show like hobby maturity at scale and i think if you go down to the lowest end of like hobby maturity because if all you have to do is just like read the comment section of this post by all the the the the the thought process is always around like this player in championships it's like everyone's like the majority of the the comments are trashing the sale because josh allen doesn't have what he doesn't have championships and so i think it's it's interesting for me to observe the commentary from the common hobby participant versus the individual that has the capital to put into a card like this and feels okay with i would imagine you'd have to feel okay with josh allen never winning a championship but the thought that he still has a long career left god willing and has a as good as probably anyone else's shot of winning a super bowl is probably what excites that buyer to a a certain level enough to to put money on it i mean it's it's happening right before the season starts so it's like we talked about like when to get on or the ship has sailed versus i missed the boat we we've we've talked about this and josh allen is like the perfect subject to talk about in this context so think like the timing of the sail is very very interesting and i just think like there is more to collecting there's more to investing there's more to collectibles than just like player has won championships or player stats aren't as good as another player stats like in collectibles like you can like that stuff matters but there's a bunch of intangible stuff and a lot of that stuff involves the people in the seat who have the capital willing to spend money on these types of cards and we just talked about the most expensive cards in football ever reported by card ladder and all of them are the exact same profile yep yeah and there's the josh allen i saw that you had added question about like what championship like would do for josh allen's yep market and to he seems like such a already collected player and already like people are rooting for josh allen who aren't bills fans absolutely like i like josh allen there's like he has all those things so a super bowl win does seem like that would fully solidify himself as a very collectible player forever like he if he brings a super bowl to the bills it seems like it would be hard to then like crash after that or to not be beloved but then at the same time i was like who knows he wins a super bowl then he has a couple he has a bad playoff loss and then he does a cringey subway commercial and does some eye kicks down the middle of the airplane all of a sudden he's no one likes him anymore so it can change very fast shout out russell wilson where like at that one point russell wilson was a god in football when he had had a great rookie year and then wins the super bowl and then goes back to another super bowl and seemed like this guy's already untouchable to then come crashing back down to earth so there is this element though that i think is important to talk about when we're talking about a player and a card value this much and this is i was actually like this is i'm gonna like a quick step outside of football because i was in a dm conversation today with an individual and we're talking about like the comment to me was about kelsey mitchell in on the indiana fever and she's she's got like eighteen games in a row with twenty or more points she's just a killer score but they were like she should be in the mvp conversation and like my feedback was like she's phenomenal but like it's really hard when you've got boston who's having an unbelievable season clark who's having an unbelievable season and mitchell having an unbelievable season they're doing it as a collective a collective union and it's really hard to like single one of the players out and be like they should be the link in in vp and i share that example to say like putting that into this conversation with football it's like russell wilson had one of the greatest defenses of this era in for like he was one of the best players during that time or best quarterbacks but like every everybody and their mama was like this team would never have gotten to where what was without the defense but then you flip it and you look at josh allen that that their coaching changed like the roster changed the all the stuff over his entire career and he's like the one constant where he like literally feels like he is the buffalo bills like he puts everything on his back the way he plays the way he runs the way he throws it all on the field like he is the epitome of like mvp type player and so like that allure about josh allen i think makes collecting him very attractive because collectors in this kind of collectors just love to buy into a guy who feels like they're they're larger than the team in a way yeah there's like a we get questions all the time about like why isn't this player more collected or like when will this player get their due and normally it's like a skill player or a quarterback who maybe wasn't like the guy like the one that like crunch time the ball is in their hands and i think that you see that in basketball where like shaq isn't as collected as a kobe or a jordan because there's something about if the shot clocks if like if you mentally picture shot clock at ten seconds and there's gonna be a buzzer beater you want it with like the guy who's gonna make the move and get the jumper and shoot it not the guy who needs to like get into post position and then someone else passes them the ball it's like you want the guy who's got the rock in their hand and is making the play and like that's why quarterbacks are so collected people want the guy that is leading the team down the field for the game winning drive and like you want the guy taking the buzzer beater so there yeah and russ never felt fully like that guy he felt like part of a team unit but josh allen it's like it's josh allen or or nobody almost and yeah that's that's a good call out on your end yeah and i think this goes back and we can we can move on but it it goes back to the the dan marino conversation and it's like i can remember mark clayton was his number one receiver because he is from indianapolis and went to my high school but i don't know if many like people if they think of that that era of the dolphins they could remember nearly anyone people just remember marino and allen could be a marino to never win one but regardless i think allen his numbers are gonna be absurd we were talking about his rushing touchdowns like but by the end of this he he's going to be remembered and so i think the advantage or the i don't know if it's not the advantage but the mindset i would imagine if you're buying a card like this would be like i'm good like he's awesome i'm good but like he wins a super bowl like i'm great before we move off this i just wanted to bring up the gold shield gold shield like we've had two million dollar josh allen cards sell over the last few months the gold shield sold for one point three five in may do you think this sale happens without that sale no i think yeah i think that gold shield like again like this to me i don't know if it it's hard to always say like does this affect football market or other players' markets but it does like set a barometer or it's like this is a new public comp that is out there and is a reference point for people selling cards of this level for other players like that is what it becomes so the fact that there's this goal like mvp shield that sells for one point three it's like well what's his rookie shield gonna do instantly becomes a question and so like that a hundred percent had to have been a reference point for this number and this sale and it does have me thinking about how like big modern football stuff hasn't really been selling publicly like i was looking it up mahomes has no sales over five hundred k since twenty twenty two like when are we gonna see a big mahomes card hit the market and it it won't because football collectors keep their cards i think that's back to and like we have we haven't seen a brady finite you know there are like there for a while there was that narrative like no football cards can sell for a million and two josh allen cards come out and sell for over a million like what where are the mahomes versions of these or the brady versions or the manning versions like that's why i'm excited to watch this gem masters even more like i feel like a a week ago i thought like yeah that's like a five hundred k card but now i'm like is this gonna break a million dollars like this is a huge card the more you know you really think about it and peel back the layers dude it's such a good comment i'm sitting there watching the hall of fame and i'm just it was on the perfect time kids were down i needed to just it was exhausting i was just watching it and i was just watching the whole drew brees package mhmm and i was just like god how many drew breezes am i gonna be able to see in my lifetime like this guy was everything you could want for in a football player a leader just great guy just defied the odds just electric on the field like i was just watching i was like one of the all time greats i'm just sitting there and like thinking about how like even though this dude beat my team in the super bowl like how this is making me feel and i just think about that and then i look at his cards and i'm like man like there's there's there should be more people on drew brees and then i got me on this rabbit hole i'm like whether you like him or not like aaron rodgers is a living legend like still actively playing football right now and he's another guy it's like look at aaron rodgers' numbers and i just think the time is coming where these players who have crazy stats have won you know they've got a ton of great cards and i think over time those are the types of players that'll see some elevation and this josh allen sale certainly helps by knocking on the door and saying hey everyone like football cards are kinda just getting started so that that that's my thoughts as we kinda close this out yes and great call out and i have one more so we clipped out a couple weeks ago on an episode where we were talking about the marino steve young pmg sales elway sales and how marino had no super bowls but was selling for the most and seattle chronicles commented on that and said i've always wondered if not winning a super bowl actually helped keep marino at the forefront of collector's minds the greatest quarterback to never win one narrative has kept people talking about him for decades that constant attention may be one reason his cards remain so sought after mhmm i think that's very i love that call out there is something there about being like the best would you rather be the best to never win or like the worst to win one like would you rather be dan would you rather have dan marino's career or trent dilfer's career that's marino dude would you rather have marino's career or joe flacco's career this is that's an interesting one i mean flacco's still playing that one's tougher flacco was pretty damn good and the story isn't written for flacco yet he's yeah there you go i don't want a bunch of dms by seed ice cards anyways i'm gonna i'm gonna defer that but like back to this like point it's when when i was buying luck because i love luck in buying his some of his best cards and putting the money in people thought i was crazy but i was like this is like i have a connection here but always like in the back of my mind from a financial perspective the what i was always considering or telling myself was like look at what people spend on penny hardway like look at that like he was like the guy people are all and then he just stopped like he went off into faded in the mist and like there's some penny hardaway in andrew luck and there's something about like the what could have been that i think drives collectibility over a long period of time at the end of the day like ten years from now like we're not gonna remember like specific game stats it's just like how do you remember these players in your heart and in your mind and that drives prices so yeah that's that's kinda how i think about collecting in a nutshell yes absolutely like if you spent any time rooting for someone like there's like a certain level of attachment it's like not i'm all i can think of is like harry potter like horcruxes like you can put part of your your rooting soul into someone like there's attachment there and like andrew luck like he was such a likable player that it was easy for people to root for him derrick rose penny it was easy to like root for these guys they were so electric and derrick rose is a perfect one yeah and they it's just people remember that they remember if they invested any like emotional fandom into a player that's not even from one of their teams but just was a big time player playing on prime time games where it's like you're sitting down and i'm watching andrew luck versus the patriots it's like alright i'm all root for andrew luck here so i spent i was probably rooting for the patriots honestly in those days i was a cool fan but but like too it's like with like think about chris johnson it's like it's so awesome that there's awareness around als and just the campaigns around recognizing him and his position and speaking out and talking about it like i think this is very special and it's very special because like we get the opportunity earlier than we thought to recognize a player like chris johnson and you go back and watch the highlight tape in the film and just he was lightning in a freaking bottle and he has the stats to prove it he never won anything but he has the stats to prove it but at the end of the day like what matters for him is like people remember it because they were on his fantasy team they remember the crazy seasons in the stats and i just think like that like bubbling up like although it sucks because it's because of this terrible disease but bubbling this up it's like we get to talk about chris johnson and then what is that what happens like it drives people to want chris johnson cards because he was awesome on the field so i just we say all this to say it's not as simple as some people make it out to be with like oh this guy's stats are better than that guy's stats or that guy has more super bowls than this guy it's like collecting's different and it just it i'm glad we have some space to talk about it because i feel like this type of thing doesn't get aired out enough yeah there will never be a formula that is like because of like that you can input these numbers and stats into and it's gonna tell you what the value should be or like forecast any value like there is just at the core of it all it's people buying pieces of cardboard with pictures of men and women on it and for no rhyme or reason like because they're all of this is built on the idea that there are like end collectors like that these cards will end up somewhere with the people who want them and like some peep like if you want andrew luck cards you can't and you are the probably the one of the biggest andrew luck collectors you still like know what those are worth or what they like i don't know there's not someone's not gonna be able to hold you hostage for a card where you're gonna be like oh i'll pay whatever it's like you know that you're a fan of him at the core and the person trying to make money off of you for that fandom like you can wait them out you will win that war of attrition like there's so of course yeah that was yeah we we did almost thirty on that card to open things up hell of a way to kick off i like the big ugly episode sixty of the football card podcast goodbye linebacker summer let's get into big ugly autumn sixty two hall of famers dick stanfill and chuck bednaric now concrete charlie concrete charlie i know the name i knew the name i knew concrete charlie and after you know one wikipedia run and one like nfl players of all time video that i watched last night i'm convinced that he's the greatest player of all time this week so chuck benarek was born in nineteen twenty five he was a football linebacker and center so he played both ways he was like a two way player one of the last guys to do that he went and played college football for penn well and actually i gotta back up because before he played college football at penn he joined the air force in world war two he flew on thirty combat missions over nazi germany there was one mission where his flack riddled plane crashed during a landing and after skidding off the runway he had to kick out a window and jump twenty feet to the ground following world war two he enrolled at the university of penn at twenty years old i just can't imagine like being a freshman in college and it's like what'd you do last summer it's like oh i was in world war two you kidding me just just a quick w w two before going off to college that's insane just at the wharton school just like get academics right tell telling war stories aspiring to be a football player what a what a dude yeah it's like oh where did you vacation last summer it's like oh yeah i was up in martha's vineyard what about you i was flying combat missions over nazi germany so he's a sixty minute man at the university of penn he plays center and linebacker so he's just like the brains of both the offense and defense two time all american one of the greatest football college football players of all time he plays third in heisman trophy voting which for a center linebacker very impressive he's then the first player drafted overall in nineteen forty nine by the eagles and with the eagles he starts at center and linebacker for the eagles placed fourteen years they win an nfl championship in nineteen forty nine they win again in nineteen sixty in nineteen sixty that's like his twelfth year like you know he's the oldest player on the field he makes the last tackle like tackles green bay packers jim taylor short of the end zone and then just like pinned him down as the final seconds went off the clock and then once once the clock ran out once the clock ran out but nurick said you can get up now jim this game is over the controversy surrounding this play led to the nfl putting in a rule penalizing defensive players for not allowing an offensive player to get up so what a way to just establish that rule to win a championship just pinning a guy down he also had a legendary hit against giants running back frank gifford where he knocked him unconscious and it's known as the hit and just a a beast of a man and extremely durable even playing both ways he played a hundred and sixty nine of a possible hundred and seventy two games in his career so one and there's more there's all these stories of him fighting people and just doing things that this this beast concrete charlie you would expect them to do oh and concrete charlie he was selling concrete while he was playing in the nfl because at the time nfl salaries weren't you know what they are today like people still had part time jobs so he's a concrete salesman while he was one of the best players in the nfl so after reading all this and then i was looking at some cards i i'm close to having to start a concrete charlie pc or at least get a card i mean how can you not so eagles fans out there i want i wanna see some concrete charlie cards this week when we at some point maybe at the end of this year do the football card podcast hall of fame it is going to be damn hard to not make concrete charlie a first ballot he's shown up here unannounced a couple times and man this is what i'm talking about what a guy what a story amazing so good what about sixties on your end yeah so i'm gonna bring up just a little bit of nostalgia and i brought up this guy because he was just a a mammoth of a man and colts had some battles with him in the playoffs during some pivotal years of the organization and so we're bringing up number sixty debrickishaw ferguson of the new york jets who was a new york jet from two thousand and six to the end of his career in twenty fifteen fourth pick overall in two thousand and six yet mario williams reggie bush vince young and then debrickishaw ferguson he is a member of the jets' ring of honor here is the best thing that i uncovered about debrickishaw ferguson the man only missed one snap in his professional career and i saw this and i was like oh what happened did he get hurt but this is the best over ten thousand seven hundred and eight snaps his lone absence happened during a bizarre desperate trick play lateral sequence against the dolphins in two thousand eight the jets took ferguson off the field and shockingly put in jarrell rivas at left tackle for a gadget play spoiling what would have been a historic unblemished ironman record so leave it to the jets to screw that up but what like what a what a what a move but can you this guy played left tackle it just was on the same team just on the field forever how crazy is that yeah that's incredible i didn't realize he was that sturdy and durable for his career yeah hundred and sixty games played every single one only missing that one snap that's like when the giants benched eli with like late this season like all it did was just like break this starts record it wasn't like they weren't saving their season or anything but wow the brickishaw ferguson what a name too hall of fame name dude i'll never forget when he was drafted and it was just like the this guy like for a left tackle maybe the perfect name yes he's yes hall of fame first ballot perfect name for position so you got the the brickishaw ferguson at left tackle i still think colt mccoy at quarterback texas quarterback colt mccoy is the greatest combination name of all time we've had a couple others on here i gotta think but yeah well maybe we'll put together the the depth chart of the all name team so the sale happened so long ago there's no photo but the highest selling to brookishall ferguson card of all time is this two thousand and six nt auto one of one and it sold august twenty third of two thousand and seven for two hundred and twenty eight dollars card ladder value on that card right now is five thousand one hundred and thirty four dollars there i obviously couldn't oh i just clicked out of it i think yeah i accidentally did but i was the card is actually pretty i i i can't see a photo of the one of one but the card itself was was pretty cool but yeah man this is what we're gonna turn into during this there is going to be not a lot of cards of these guys that we talk about they're gonna be very select which gets me to think about like man is there there's an opportunity in buying the best cards of these all time big uglies because there's just there's just not a lot of them so i feel like after these sixty episodes get done the the there's gonna be all time hype around offensive linemen because one they rule two they don't have many cards three they all have rookie cards so if you everyone don't hype it up too much now don't don't go scooping up all the guys because i wanna find these cards and i wanna talk about them here but by the end of it you can go all off and make your investments on offensive linemen but for now we get to talk about debricka shaw ferguson and a two hundred and twenty eight dollar card now being valued via cl value at fifty one hundred twenty years later and it's just a nice reminder you gotta go out there and get some protection for your collection you know like you need to fortify the line you well you just got a bunch of i got a bunch of skill guys running around willy nilly and some quarterbacks like no i need to get some gotta get some front five fall going we gotta get the the big ugly autumn going we gotta fortify the trenches jonathan taylor probably takes him out to plenty steak dinners because jonathan taylor's probably not quite jonathan taylor without quentin nelson but just pulling guard smashing people pancakes he's just been consistently good his entire career so i gotta shout out quentin nelson in that question yeah those like mic'd up clips of him just burying people will slip forever those those even those enter my algorithm and i'll watch them but when a guard pulls and just smacks someone it is one of the more set like to break break off a run like or like open a lane for the running back it's one of the most satisfying things steve hutchinson steve hutchinson was really the first guy that i was like into to who was doing this for sean alexander and to have that ability on your team is it's very yep we wanna see other people do it and sometimes it takes us to make the first move and there's no worse feeling when that card gets sniped and there's been times where i have been the buyer and i'll get messages from people and they'll say did you buy this card and i say yes i did and they're like damn it it was on my watch list and i'd be like well you should have bought it nope but then it has the reverse is true where like you'd sit on a card and then it's someone pulls the trigger and you're like damn it i was thinking about like what is a recent moment of this and probably for me and i was wavering a little bit on it it just wasn't a good time but probably that topps chrome jonathan taylor superfractor that went off the board i think it sold for forty five hundred dollars just which is a lot of money but i was i was so caught up in like staying away from the topps chrome hype mhmm that i like didn't really give it great consideration but when it did go off the board it was like kinda like a knife to the chest it was like fuck like i maybe i should maybe i shoulda got that and now like what's gonna happen is like that card will be presented back like double the cost and i'll just be like no thanks so yeah that's one that but cards get away man you just gotta be good with it that's my mindset for sure it happens all the time i can't even think of one because it's happened so so much and it's like a dangerous game to play but necessary sometimes where if you have a card that's like sitting on your watch list that you want but maybe it's just like a little overpriced but it's got like fifty watchers on it so you know there's like interest in it and just playing the mental game of how would i react if this got binned right now mhmm and if you ask yourself that a lot of times my response is like i'd pay more for it right now so that will result in me purchasing a lot of cards but there's just some sort of like validate yes like you said there's validation in seeing that someone else out there like values that card more than you like if it gets binned while you were watching it that means someone else valued it higher than you honestly if you weren't willing to pay that and then someone else out there did so there's some you know natural thing within all of us that you know is seeking that or like see someone else with something we want it i have a toddler i watch that all the time where if you watch toddlers play with toys together like there's something in there where it's like wait they're playing with that i want that and the second like they get a chance to play with that toy they're like doing their thing but they're watching the other toddler to see what they're now playing with because now all of a sudden that thing looks more interesting and like i'm watching that develop in a tiny brain from a young age so that's that's still within all of us to some degree i great point on the toddler i will also say i love the fact that you brought up the fifty watchers like i watch the watchers all the time and my methodology is if it has ten or less watchers i'm good even if it wants even if it's a card that like i those are ones that i'll sit on ice and maybe potentially go back to but i'm not threatened by someone coming along when you start to get up to twenty to thirty to fifty like those those cards are gonna be gone in a in a week at max like so think watching the watchers is always a very important tactic yes and just like understanding like okay this card hasn't sold in a while and maybe that's what's like holding back the comp or like not giving peep like and it's listed for twelve hundred and you're hoping to get it for nine hundred and and just buy it just buy it just i remember the one of my favorite cards in my collection is two thousand two finest gold ricky williams psa ten like he doesn't have dolphin stuff i was trying to get a dolphins ricky card for my like rushing later collection at the time and that was sitting on ebay forever at three hundred dollars and i was like that's too like i can't spend that much money on ricky william i was like i want that for like two hundred dollars i shouldn't be spending three on it this is worth two and eventually i just bend it i was like you know what whatever and it's the only copy that's ever sold publicly like i'm so happy i got that card but that was one that sat there forever and it had a ton of watchers on it once you bought it it was like okay that feels good so just buy the card that's always the moral of the story just buy the card if final note for me if you're debating like a couple hundred dollars like could you you're wasting your time that money that you're like those you're splitting here it all it just all comes back around just just just buy the car if you're thinking about it too much if you wake up the next day and you're thinking about it just buy the card because the regret is so painful when you see it on the ended side and it's not yours that is that'll leave you with nightmares and you don't want that yeah and it feels so good to just convince when once your brain switches from like should i buy this card to like oh yeah i'm buying this card and once you you've been it and your brain releases the good chemicals that's just the best best feeling in the world alright next up from bolt card crew why is the two thousand two topps chrome third year tom brady going up so much i've not looked at the sales but my react this card has done this a lot of times and i think it's there's always story and narrative around this card first super bowl year first year that he was in topps chrome first refractor and stop topps chrome with the black refractor so i feel like that gear is always a year that like goes through these cycles because it has a it's has a lot of narrative behind it yeah same i looked it up the black refractor out of five ninety nine and a psa nine is up over a little over two hundred percent in two years which to me is not shocking compared to other go cards over the past two years like a lot of stuff is up two hundred percent or more so it didn't seem to be like far and away ahead like some sort of outlier i just think brady stuff is super hot right now jordan stuff kobe lebron like manning stuff we're seeing you know everyone across the board is kind of josh allen just sold for one point seven million dollars so yeah things are up from kc sports card collector when will randy moss and jerry rice go up like the basketball goats moss is crazy cheap so so i dug into some card ladder data on this one shout out card ladder the official data provider of the football card podcast here here are some nuggets so moss has had twenty seven sales in twenty twenty six that are ten thousand dollars or more jerry rice has had twenty one sales that are ten thousand dollars or more in all of twenty twenty five moss had seventeen sales so he has ten more sales this year ten k or more jerry rice had thirty two in twenty twenty five ten k or more so i think these guys i mean i we've talked about jerry rice and randy moss every damn episode i think they're a card they're cards and it's just not the ten k of stuff i just that's like the hot higher end stuff i wanted to call out as an example but i just feels like there's been momentum and energy around the mosses the calvin johnsons the jerry ricees ever like more since we've started this podcast it's it's continues to there continues to be momentum so i don't know if they'll ever reach like the high end basketball guys probably not but i do think there has been a lot of growth with skill position players like when i got back into cards like everyone was just talking about quarterbacks and that's not the case anymore yeah and the i don't think that they'll ever reach basketball goats like moss and rice like there's just been and we're seeing it there's like different sports dominated certain eras and like vintage baseball is always gonna dominate that era of vintage like i don't think football is ever like i don't think fifties football cards are ever gonna surpass mantle because football is more popular now as just like a general sport in america or in the world whatever and like nineties basketball like jordan like jordan is just different like there's not gonna be a world where it's like oh rice should be more than jordan because he did x y and z it's just is what it is so if moss is crazy cheap right now go buy a bunch of randy moss that's all i gotta say next up from a j m graded football player in july with twelve thousand two hundred and twenty five cards which was up thirty three percent from his june number i know that his top sales have been mentioned on the pod before but with this volume of graded cards entering the hobby he's pretty much become the twenty twenty six face of the hobby going into the season it is pretty safe to say that the giants won't be going to the super bowl so how do you think this i think his market looks in january i would say that i'd probably say that josh allen has been the well but i understand the jackson art of it all what i and instantly like great question instantly i thought of mac jones and so mac jones entering the twenty twenty two two season so first round quarterback lot of product cycle attention on him strong rookie season lots of cards so i compared and contrasted mac jones' rookie stats with jackson darts so mac jones went ten and seven we're gonna talk completion percentage because it's your favorite topic sixty seven point six completion percentage three thousand eight hundred and one passing yards for mac jones in his rookie year twenty two touchdowns thirteen interceptions ninety two point five passer rating he made it to the pro bowl i remember that in his rookie year jackson dart twelve starts four and eight sixty three point seven completion percentage two thousand two hundred and seventy two passing yards fifteen touchdowns five interceptions ninety one point seven passer rating so maybe the the win loss record wouldn't be the same if he started a full season but i think jackson darts maybe stats would be very similar to rookie year mac jones we all know mac jones' sophomore campaign wasn't great he definitely had a fall off now mac jones is like the number one backup quarterback in the league and probably will get a chance to start based on the daniel jones and sam darnall of it all but yeah i wanted to compare and contrast mac jones to jackson dart because when i hear when i think about them from a hobby perspective it felt very similar yeah great call out so i thought about it sit like but i do think there's a big difference in terms of like the situation they're walking into like mac jones walking into brady's empty mhmm fleets good point and franchise that had been riddled with success where the giants are very very hungry for any sort of success the bar is so low for the giants right now they have thirteen total wins in the past three seasons combined so like if they're competitive if they go like eight and nine even i feel like the city's buzzing i feel like dart hype is up they have the new head coach like there's all the same reasons that the caleb williams thing happened last year was like bears fans were starved for any sort of semblance of a good quarterback or on field success and like people are like why is caleb williams getting so much hype it's like because this fan base has been running a place for twenty years so like the fact that there's finally like a double digit win season with some like exciting quarterback play like yes i'm gonna be all in on that and want all these cards so honestly i think come january even if the giants missed the playoffs but if they're like eight and nine and dart look decent like i still think like i don't think he's gonna come crashing down i think sure people are people are they're starving and new york coming off the the knicks win like wanting they'll be wanting the giants to to be good so i don't know playing and yeah playing the last play schedule i know that's only like a couple games but i could see the giants making some noise being competitive and therefore dart continues to be hyped up and then like next year will be like maybe the big prove it year for dart but it all depends on what happens you know certain we've seen how like quickly the tides can turn based on one play like if dart has a butt fumble and the giants start o and seven he might just be done and they're bringing in someone else so who knows lot of excitement with dart which leads to a lot of excitement with his cards i think i i have the same thing with my quarterback where i'm very excited but it you just need him to stay on the field so the injury component of it all is always lingering with some of these guys and to me like that makes it really challenging to want to be confident to to be honest with you it's like sophomore campaign anthony richardson i was just like you know these prices are still kinda high and i'm still not sure like he can stay on the field he looked good his rookie year but and like thank god i did thank thank god i did which i did sell my it still fetched over one k i keep eleven hundred or something i sold my nebula richardson and it was just like man somebody somebody still believing in this that's awesome and yeah one more thing on the completion percentage police because i'm looking at stats and it's like yeah mac jones had sixty seven that year but like check down merchants like tua had that year where he had seventy two percent completion with like two thousand some yards like lot of screens lot of screens lot of check downs and when you really like think about completion percentage like caleb williams sixty percent career peyton manning sixty five percent career what is what is the difference between sixty and sixty five five schefter and everyone else where chris ballard is just like he didn't get another injection it's like where is this coming from and it's and then i'm like is this just like these free agent quarterback agents that are like trying to like pump that market it's it's crazy it's like it's all nonsense like all the time it's like and what blows my mind is like people spend all this time on their phone on their like for you page listening like believing this nonsense and people are bickering back and forth about all this insignificant shit and i'm just like you know what like i think my life is better as a human being to just like not pay attention to any of that crap because none of it matters most of the time it's not real and it never enhances my experience as a fan ever never it wanting and just like what is the i'm not like a ratio guy but okay nineteen times the difference between this and the shield that sold for one point seven million dollars and this is bgs nine five with like a nine subgrade on one of them but i don't know this that doesn't seem i mean that's a lot of money it's not a card i would buy i'm not a bills fan or a josh allen fan like that but i don't know eighty eight eighty eight k compared to one point seven for the one of one shield auto like i love and we i just love gold prisms so it it's it's gonna sound crazy but in the fervor of cards and what josh allen's cards are doing in this moment before the season where you've mentioned this a lot of people like josh howe a lot of people are rooting for him i think to be honest with you the i this right now in this moment i would expect this to maybe be like a lower six figure sale just based on the way things are at so eighty eight k it's like a shit out of money i would never be able to or less i can't remember exact print runs but he told me the price of them and i was like that seems like a pretty good price which triggered this like thought process of like it very much feels that the exquisite football stuff is certainly less discovered there's a lot less attention and i hate to be like oh because it's in basketball and lebron and like all these things but just feels like that arena is untapped a little bit it just we never we never spend the time to talk about it we don't report on these sales much so when i saw this it it kinda triggered a bunch of thoughts in my mind and said that's there's some cool cards in that that zone and i i'm always a fan of the on card i'm a i'm a fan of the game used and that stuff you just don't can't expect to get regularly these days yeah
