The Football Card Podcast #58: What Changes for Collectors When Football Returns?
hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is mister stacking slabs himself brett how you doing getting this one in before the national craziness you're there once i get done recording this i'm closing everything down hitting the streets and getting to getting up to lovely rosemont illinois been seeing all of the instagram action so far excited to be there it is going to be awesome there's been a lot going on for me just with my collection and everything else there's been a ton of movement so i feel like the national's coming at a really good time i'm ready to rip it man yeah i'm very excited i got up here today's wednesday i got up here yesterday tuesday i got to go out on the shore the floor a little bit can't wait man the energy nothing beats it just seeing all the all the activations coming together all the dealers setting up there's just no better place than when everyone here is a card sicko and everyone you talk to has the same passion the same sickness yeah it's just a lot of fun it is linebacker summer and we don't just take breaks because we've got the biggest event in sports cards we we do the content because you're all traveling you're traveling in and some of you are at home and we're not gonna interrupt the routine so we're here we're dedicated to you the loyal listener and the football card collector and i say we i know we both have tight schedules so let's just get into it what do you say let's do it i do have one quick so i saw josh johnson yesterday and he requested that i give the the coffee update like how is the coffee situation in the hotel room because that's how i get become a recurring part of the football card podcast in our no days off you know dedication there have been many road games and i'm gonna say i skipped the room coffee because there's a starbucks yes lobby of the lowe's and the room coffee this is the pod just this unlicensed medium dark roast pod i didn't like the way it looked because i wanted to give the coffee maker a try but i can't go unlicensed i can't start off national week with an unlicensed coffee i had to go down and rip a pack of bucks so here we are there we go yes so lowe's hotel is where i've stayed every year that's where i'm headed that sounds like that's where you're at and i have already budgeted the amount of money i will spend this week at the starbucks it it is i can't get out of there without spending like twelve bucks and i'm just like how how is this twelve dollars you just like poured me a cup of coffee but so it goes i they don't even pour it you have to pump it yourself that's right you do have they're very nice though i remember the workers being very very nice but yeah uh-huh let's see the breakfast sandwich and a grande just black coffee ran me thirteen o eight see yeah welcome to the national well it sounds like there's some inflation there i was used to twelve something we're up to thirteen this year i where where's all my card money gonna go it sounds like coffee the market's gone up they know i know everyone maybe has a little extra yeah so i figured like opening topic i don't know about you but you know i've been consumed by my team's content you know dudes reporting in we're we're there it's i feel alive you've got all of the content the check ins everyone's doing it and i'm just like man these guys are hitting the field we're getting ready to go and so this had me thinking and i guess the thinking that i have because not everyone collects active players but i think there's an increased momentum when the football season is playing and a lot of people do collect active players so i wanna start with this core question and i've got a a few little questions to dig into but the broader question is what changes for your collecting when the season is back is there anything that you think is different now that these guys are yeah we're in training camp now but soon will be preseason and then the big show will resume is anything changed for you i think it will respark my i mean i'm always collecting bears cards i'm always watching but in the season and especially if the season's a successful one i i just can't help myself like i just get too wrapped up in this team is good i wanna collect this team that's really what happened last year i feel like it didn't pivot a lot of my collection but i went from going for olders bears teams to finally being like oh okay i have players on this team that i wanna collect so and over this offseason i feel like you know that's weighing a little bit maybe or just i'm ready i'm ready for the new season i'm ready to see it unfold i am also mentally then prepared for the letdown that that could inevitably happen i was talking to i think ryan green and we were like you know the bears haven't had back to back like good seasons since two thousand five so just just wanna see it just wanna go win ten games and i'll be happy and i'll keep collecting these guys but yeah i think yeah season's coming back lots of lots of pros and cons to collecting active players it can be the highest high like there's nothing better than your guy having a monster game and you have an awesome card of them and then there could be low lows when they don't perform well or they get hurt and like the the week to week of it all like you know just remembering oh bad week one is just feels like the end of the world and then you have seven days to sit there and dwell on it and look at your cards of the players who let you down and you're like god why do i have why why am i collecting these people but it can all turn around at any time so i'm ready for the roller coaster let's go what about you i i alluded to the fact that my collection is going through quite the transformation there's been some massive pruning off of my collection specifically my colts prism collection and i found myself as i was going through these cycles that you know what there's like no there's like no way i can get rid of my psa ten gold prism rookie of alec pierce or my gold prism and gold vinyl of tyler warren because i need a little something to to get me excited about having cards of guys that i'm going to be watching on the field and i think that's fun and we're i think a video came up and i was talking about colts reporting and i was you know mumbling to myself and i looked at my wife and i said i don't have i don't have high expectations but i do have one expectation what is that expectation and my wife just looked at me and goes that the colts make the playoffs because i've been saying this for just five years and it's been miserable but yeah i i wanted to just like hit a couple of these really quick the fact i'm gonna i'll just run through them i think season's starting you've got cards the cards feel like they're connected to something again the market is more active prices begin moving from from conviction to the forming and then you've gotta deal with injuries like you're gonna buy cards injuries suck they're inevitable and it's like how do we get through those things so those are like the top things that i was thinking about which all of those have good and bad things associated with them but like what what are your thoughts like did any of those resonate with you oh yeah the i mean all of it it just starts to everything starts to move more like we're saying like up and down good or bad it's just a whole different whole different beast when the games are on but that's why we do it that's why we do it do you expect what is your expectation okay so topps chrome football came out obviously during the off season we've seen the prices there's a lot of momentum i can't i can only imagine what tops and fanatics are gonna do once the season starts to push this license do what do you expect like from a a market perspective i feel like oftentimes the narrative is like sell now like sell at the national i i have not been there yet but i would imagine there's a lot of guys that have a lot of preseason hype that dealers are trying to get rid of do you think prices are gonna be going down during the season because everyone's trying to sell high now is it change because this is the first season that topps holds the license does it not matter at all like what are your expectations that's an interesting call out i and i don't know if i'm biased or what disclaimer we're just two dudes talking we don't really know that much but it feels like the cycle of like selling all your football at the national has kind of like not not been as effective over the last couple years i feel like three or four years ago that was like the pattern i i don't know it just feels like there's more stability or just there there seems to just be more interest in football in general which then like i think leads to more people looking to buy and looking to collect than just like the main flippers who are just doing that football playbook of like buying the off season you know sell before the national so but and then yeah with the tops of it all like i'm sure with tops now and new releases like i don't know it just feels like there's a more like always on presence of football cards and it's not gonna drop off because like i can't see if drake may has another baller season like his price is dropping off because everyone's selling at the national like i think i think on the field performance is still gonna like dictate a lot of this more than necessarily like the the calendar but and i'm sure i haven't like looked at a calendar i'm sure there's all sorts of tops releases that are coming out during the season and who knows how fast they can get out like when like the new rookies like are they ever gonna be able to get to the point where like the next tops chrome is coming out you know in season that would be cool that that i think would add more momentum to also to the whole thing but what do you think yeah i think i have an expectation that there might be more price stability based on the marketing push from tops that and like you mentioned i haven't looked at that calendar yet but in all likelihood i would imagine there will be some big releases throughout the season which certainly will help and that's not something that maybe has been as prevalent i'm very interested in i think performance probably matters like more now than ever before and i just think about like your guy caleb williams he had a lot of hype and then that hype waned a little bit then he had a spectacular season with many moments and now he he's probably one of the most expensive guys to buy so i would imagine like that price sensitivity being a thing more than ever before tied to performance and i think personally like every year at this point i go into the national being like is this the year i like buy a josh allen card because i really really like josh allen and every time he doesn't make it or win the super bowl i'm always just like hey remember that note make sure you go back and consider that so i don't know like josh allen has been on my mind he's my favorite player to watch and my thinking is like i would really enjoy having a card or two of his that is really nice and i would like to have one obviously before he gets a super bowl because if he if that's the case it's gonna be cheaper than i'll try to buy it after the fact so that's kinda what's on my mind but yeah i think the ship might have sailed for me with josh allen cards unfortunately but i will be looking yeah i i don't know if the ship has sailed but he is one of those guys that like i could see a world the bills rattle off two super bowl wins in a row and it's like all of a sudden josh allen is certified like greatest player ever it's like why wasn't i buying him kind of the like mahomes like mahomes won the first one and then they didn't win and there was kind of this wall and it was still clear mahomes is the best quarterback in the nfl at that point or one of the best and then they run off two more super bowls and just becomes like why wasn't i buying mahomes after the he had he had already won a super bowl and an mvp and that wasn't enough for me to think he's a good buy but there's also the how fast everything changes we've talked about it with skill players but i saw a post the psa vault social account just did like a chart of rookie silver prism psa tens and their price and like off season change caleb williams is at the time of this post was over twelve hundred dollars for silver prism psa ten that's seventy percent increase in the offseason drake may is eleven hundred dollars down twenty percent in the offseason drake may went to a super bowl so like sometimes it doesn't always make sense based on performance and then i look and see cj stroud is three hundred dollars for his psa ten so caleb williams is four x that and i remember when cj stroud was five x caleb williams you know like it just fluctuates so fast and silver prisms are their own you know that's just a more liquid card that's like moving but i do think the fact that it transact so much does kinda give an accurate representation or just depiction of the market of that player so yeah it's i don't like the caleb hype now i'm getting all like nervous like some of my caleb cards i'm like god these are like i like that they're up in value i guess but at the same time i i have seen many many quarterbacks that even drake may drake may goes to a super bowl and he's down twenty percent like it doesn't matter caleb williams could go to a super bowl and lose in horrific fashion and then he drops fifty percent even though he like made it further but it's the hobby the hobby's gonna hobby it's just gonna whatever's gonna happen you know yeah and we don't have time to get into this and we need you to move forward but i think maybe it'd be fun as this the season rolls and we see these prices that silver date is definitely interesting to see maybe the fluctuation of those numbers and then compare and contrast with rare and scarce cards and see if there's alignment i think to me the opportunity especially with attention with on all of these like very popular hyped up quarterbacks typically the opportunity lies somewhere in the the the product that is off the radar but is really cool and is a a rare and scarce card like a a one of one out of that where if you look at it and it's like four thousand dollars and you compare and contrast that with like you know twelve hundred dollar card it starts to make sense so those will be discussions i think we can have as we move forward but linebacker summers here i don't wanna impede that let's what do we got what no we're on fifty eight what a number episode fifty eight linebacker summer marching on number one on the well let's see first hall of famers only a few we've got jack lambert max speedy derrick thomas first i'll just shout out jack lambert middle linebacker for the pittsburgh steelers the steel curtain nine time pro bowler six time first team all pro hall of famer four time super bowl champ just a ferocious middle linebacker one of his nicknames dracula in cleats i didn't know he was called dracula in cleats that that alone makes me want a jack lambert card that's badass so shout out jack lambert who'd you put down for fifty eight derek thomas it was an easy one for me based on just childhood nostalgia when i when i was you sent over the sheet and i was selected thomas i instantly got up from my chair and went back and i should have grabbed it but by ninety four sega nfl football with montana on the cover i was like i'm pretty sure derek thomas is one of the like the six guys on the back of this game and i flipped it over and yeah he sure was so i always i remember like that i don't think that was my that wasn't my first exposure to derek thomas because i had like a bunch of his starting lineups growing up as a kid but that made him feel like such a big star at the time having a defensive player get promoted like that so i think derrick thomas easy one if you're a chiefs fan he's beloved he's defensive rookie of the year in nineteen nineteen eighty nine nfl man of the year in ninety three two time first team all pro three time second team all pro nfl sacks leader in nineteen ninety a great story about derrick thomas on veterans day in nineteen ninety against the seattle seahawks tomix exploded for an nfl single game record of seven sacks after reading in a local peg paper that he was on a sack slump so how about that motivation just have you know you know whatever like i'm gonna go out there and just get seven sacks which is that is just such a feat so you know unfortunately derrick thomas's life ended early he was the only he's the only player in nfl history to die during their career that was later inducted into the nfl hall of fame i see a ton of derrick thomas cards and chiefs fans collecting him and so yeah the highest selling card of derek thomas he falls in definitely into the the kaboom category where his twenty twenty gold kaboom sold for ten thousand three hundred eighty dollars in october of twenty twenty five probably one of those guys who doesn't have the most robust catalog we all know the kaboom story but he also has we'll throw this up because this card this card rules and i'm looking right at it for five thousand five hundred and twenty dollars in april of twenty six he's got a twenty four karat gold that sold in a psaa pop too so shout out derek thomas one of the all time greats that card that twenty four karat gold is sick gold i don't know if i've ever seen it before dude gold with the chiefs like some of my priest homes cards i they just are meant to have you know when it works it works he has a red and green pmg right under there too i was just looking up his sales as well that green pmg is nasty sold for forty three hundred dollars back in august of twenty twenty three for a psa seven seventy five hundred dollar cl value right now i think this is a ten k card if it if it goes up for auction today yeah that red it looked like sold for five k recently so if a red's going for five defensive players man this rule players i was looking up yeah i we talked about derrick thomas i think fifty five his his college number for alabama when he had i forget the exact number i think it was like twenty seven sacks in one of those seasons but yeah his second year in the nfl he had a twenty sack season in eleven years his career which yes was tragically cut short he was only thirty two he had a hundred and twenty six and a half sacks through eleven seasons so averaging over ten sacks a year for his entire career is pretty awesome and like was still clearly of an effective player he had had twelve sacks in ninety eight seven in ninety nine and that was his last season but yeah just a beast i i in reading about him and his life the car accident that he got into i didn't realize he was heading to the airport to attend the nfc championship game he was getting on a plane to go watch football so to me i was just like man this dude was just all ball all the time spending his time away from the game at the game so that was a a nugget that i wanted to shout out yeah wow also have to shout out a couple more von miller mhmm fifty eight eight time pro bowler three time first team all pro two time super bowl champion a super bowl mvp super bowl fifty for the denver broncos and then also won another super bowl with the rams in twenty twenty one but von miller just a absolute stud still playing still doing it and then who else on the top av so jack lambert is number one on av but if you look down i saw some good oh pene sewell is up there shout out the lineman out there matt milano carlos dansby peter boulware these are peter boulware he was kinda scary man yeah ray malaga yeah there's some there's some names roquan smith for a few years with the bears was fifty eight before changing to zero on the ravens and how about this shout out gary brackett yeah i i thought about i didn't wanna go to homer but that was he was on my mind but yes gary brackett definitely the linebacker for a lot of winning teams overachiever from rutgers so shout out gary brackett yeah he kinda came in i feel like out of not out of nowhere but i just remember him being like a story a feel good story like yeah he was like a late round pick right maybe yep shout out gary brackett super bowl champion or was gary brackett undrafted that's what or maybe so much time has passed that we're looking it up right now gary brackett owned a bunch of restaurants in indy as well you look up his drafty i'm looking up a highest selling gary brackett card does gary brackett i would love to see that okay this is cool a two thousand five topps total robert mathis gary brackett dual card in a psa ten sold for a hundred and sixty dollars let's go last april this is so in o three bracket signed with the colts as an undrafted free agent and he was not selected in the two thousand and three nfl draft that's what i thought there we go undrafted quick von miller before we move on i will always love von miller obviously great player but von miller was responsible for i believe it still sits at the record of my highest converting gamble of all time i put super bowl i put a hundred bucks on a parlay to have the broncos cover or the broncos win which i believe they were underdogs and i said if the broncos are gonna win unfortunately it's not gonna be because of peyton manning it's gonna be because of their defense and the narrative i was saying was von miller was their best player so i'll parlay this into a prop of super bowl mvp which von miller won that and it was a it was a crazy payout so after that i was like pumped for manning to be able to you know walk off into the sunset but then i was just like von miller i will forever love you because of this payday you gave me on this super bowl yeah i'd be pcing von miller after that his highest selling card ten thousand eight hundred dollars for purple super bowl kaboom twenty twenty five purple kaboom and then let's see his top five sales all kabooms and then let's see six through eleven are downtowns and then twelve thirteen fourteen fifty i'm just trying to get to alright november twenty twenty four twenty nine hundred dollars for his twenty thirteen black finite one of one this card looks badass twenty nine hundred bucks that's a bin what year was that it's twenty thirteen no what year was the the sale the sale was twenty twenty four so two years ago november that that was that would be one that i would be like this is probably three times that now yeah cl says fifty seven hundred but i i yeah i think so in january one of his twenty fourteen gold prism sold for twenty one hundred twenty two hundred so dude dude you know a fun funny what year was that with the gold twenty fourteen gold what year though was that sale oh january of this year okay when i when i got my twenty fourteen manning gold on a gold prism on ebay it was a bin smash it's like i don't know twelve hundred dollars this was like several years ago i no longer own this card but the there was like a i remember vividly being like it was a lot a lot of money for me definitely at that time to like hit bin smash but i was like this is like you won't ever see this but there was also a von miller gold and it was like it was so cheap too and i was like should i get the von miller too i'm like i'm not a broncos guy so i shouldn't do this but i remember that being listed alongside the manning that yeah alright good fifty eight linebacker summer march is on then fifty nine and then sixties what sixties is probably lineman right that's gotta be yeah because we're gonna get in the big ugly big ugly fall i like the i like the branding we gotta shout out card ladder by the way the official sponsor of the football card podcast i can't wait to spend some time with card ladder i'll be there that's where i'm i'm getting in dropping my bags and i'm doing some content over there when i get in i'll be there for a lot of the week so would love to connect with you loyal listener at the card letter booth at some point yeah i was able to swing by there yesterday it's still very much under construction but yeah that's gonna be the spot that is like that's the plymouth rock of the you just gotta go just get your bearings straight just head to the card ladder booth set up shop look around you'll find who you need to find maybe we can get josh to get the espresso machine going next year like we can have a josh could be the barista and you know talk super fractures talk finites and maybe serve us a little cortado while we're talking cards that's a good call there's not enough coffee offerings on the national floor i don't think there's i wonder if that fudge stand will be back i i always see the fudge fudge booth and i'm like who's buying the fudge at nashville how many monster energy drinks though will be crushed in that that crowd oh dozens too many alright should we get into some questions yes let's do it okay episode fifty eight so first up we touched on last week the reporting of sales or not reporting of sales and kinda gave our takes there and a listener who wants to remain anonymous just sent a lot of messages about this and i'll paraphrase some of this he goes hey guys i have a rather nuanced comment here it'll be a little long but i do think it's important your topic was around reporting which is a great topic sounds like it was on your minds i have a career's worth of experience on this topic i'm now retired but was a commodity trader for virtually all of my career at a large global company with large legal and compliance army behind me all of that to say here's his summary he goes when it comes to reporting private deals i think it's important for everyone to decide for themselves if they will always price report or never price report it is very important to be one extreme or the other otherwise if you leave room to be a sometime price reporter then you by definition leave room for consideration along the lines of well does it benefit me to report at a minimum that is a conflict of interest and quite realistically it is price manipulation some might say that they are not the type to manipulate a market but if you leave yourself the gray area to decide on a case by case basis to price report it is hard not to have a layer of motivation in some cases but not others simply based on if reporting is a benefit to you or not i think you referred to this exactly but yeah because i'm not personally looking for a shout out glad you appreciate the comments just wanted to give it attention glad that you guys are talking about this topic so i just thought it was a good perspective to think about it made me think about yesterday i may have sat at a blackjack table for a little bit and it's like either always hit on sixteen or you never hit on sixteen you just gotta commit one way or the other and just stay true to that so i i do think that's probably some sound advice of on the reporting like either do it or you don't dude i've been having so many private conversations with people on this topic and that is the easily the best piece of advice that i have received so far and it is this is such a real like timely feedback because i was sending cards to auction and i was trying to figure out what i value this batch at auction and there was a card that i purchased privately that was a part of it and i looked up on card ladder the card i was like i wonder when this sold last and it was my sale and it was a private sale and i had totally forgotten that i had reported this card to card ladder so it sounds like i'm on the hook because i have already done this that i need to always do this when i can so yeah this has me thinking about things a little bit differently but great feedback yes alright got a few more next up from tkd tickets shout out tkd tickets question asker of the year so far last week you shared the two thousand three madden psa graded pickup i think that those kinds of companion pieces really round out a collection they evoke nostalgia make great display pieces and generate conversation i've added a couple graded sports illustrateds to my collection i have the phil simms and eli manning super bowl covers are there any sports illustrated or magazines in general that trigger that nostalgia hit for you mine was easy immediately and i every time i go to my parents' house there's this up in the bedroom where i sleep if i stay the night over there if i like my family stay in there there's like an old magazine rack and every time i like go pick up the magazine to look at it so it was like burned vividly in my brain but it's the cult heroes with peyton manning on the front it was after apologies the super bowl forty one win but that like sports illustrated i dude i've looked through it so many times and the image is just like when i was reading the question burned into my brain so i've never thought about grading video games i've never thought about grading magazines but all this talk track on here and all the constant conversations and the items you're showing like it's got me thinking maybe i wanna do this get some get some graded stuff and just put it up on the back shelf it keep that memory alive yeah that's that is a great cover i'll i'm very cover curious right now or or just alternate like i do love the madden graded game and just like like he's saying like tkd saying it is like a cool display piece and kind of just add some variance to my bookshelf with all my collectibles in there covers for me that's funny one that jumped into my mind was the bears after they won the nfc championship that year it's urlacher on the cover and he's like exhaling and you can see his breath because it's cold and a little snowy in the nfc championship game after they beat the saints and the headline is waiting for peyton which is pretty sick yeah that was a great game but that nfc championship was awesome oh they just crushed them yeah that was awesome the the them winning the super bowl i had that cover as a kid i remembered i i mean i'm sure it wasn't in good condition but it just was like the bears mall the patriots but then what really i was thinking about when i first read this question because i've been looking into magazines i go more of like nonsports like slam well slam first off there's a lot of slams that come to mind specifically the one with like i think it's darius miles lamar oden and quinn richardson and they're all wearing like each other's jerseys backwards it's just like the sickest cover ever there is a signed raw copy on ebay that i keep looking at i'm like try all of them it says it is but then i'm like like it's not graded or authenticated yet and i'm like do i really wanna spend i think it's like two hundred dollars on this if it's like not real autographs so i have a hesitation there but then on the non sports side xxl the eminem fifty cent doctor dre money power respect cover was just like an all time nostalgic moment like that was just such a sick cover and ego trip and i don't know there's a bunch of other just like older hip hop covers that come to mind that to me i wanna maybe track down get cool copies graded but yeah it's definitely if you're just a collector of stuff like i feel like it's natural to start looking at other things too and why not like even looking at behind you right now on that shelf it's like you got vinyl you've got a belt you know like it's just having like the variance of sizes and things it's it's what we do did the magazines bring me back to playing football in high school and like hopping in my boy's car and like i just like i mean i just cut like talking about this i hear like just three six mafia just like project pat like banging with the subs in the back and like just looking at the back seat and there's just like source magazines like dude i would just pull the source and i'd be like looking through it i'll be like this is awesome so that just hit me pretty hard thinking about that the oh i had two alpine twelve inch figures in the back you had to three six most known unknowns it's a time and place and era yeah shout out shout out magazine the one thing though is every time i see the magazine i wanna read it or i wanna then read the article mhmm yeah creating removed so it's like you need the display one but then you need the like one the raw copy the one that you can open and and look at so like what is it with sneakers the one to rock one to stock you buy two pairs and stash one wear the other but this is what we're gonna do you and i are gonna just buy a bunch of old nostalgic magazines for cheap and we're gonna start like a arena club for magazines and make a ton of money and so people are just like ripping packs of magazines that's that's that's what that's where we're gonna become millionaires so we're gonna start pumping magazines here on the football card podcast wow just imagining the logistics of like twelve graded magazines wrapped in a pack and it's like the first eleven are just base magazine you're just chucking these slabs yeah that's the other thing like graded vinyl i like the idea but you as a vinyl collector it's like i wanna be able to opening of vinyl and seeing all the inserts is like one of the best parts of it and to remove that is just a a mental hurdle i like i'd i'd rather have a copy that i can look through than like a pristine copy that is just like locked into place but one one especially if you're spending the money on the deluxe with the double with the gate fold and all the inserts and all the stickers and the liner notes all that stuff yeah you that's gotta that's kinda hand you gotta be hands on with that yeah alright next up from bolt car crew who's actually giving tkd tickets around for his money bolt car crews for question asker of the year high motor on bolt high motor here here is the list of top ten retired players by number of card sales last week on card ladder and he told me that he double checked this that there's no ai errors after the urlacher patriots debacle if you were to invest in three of them which would you choose and why the order is brady one manning two barry sanders three emmett smith four jerry rice five joe montana six dan marino seven brett favre eight randy moss nine john elway ten so by the way as we're recording this i just look over i'm like what is that pounding they're literally my next door neighbors there's like guys just ripping their fence down so it's there's like a massacre i was like what is that banging so apologies listeners hopefully hear it okay perfect good then i can certainly hear it but you know we like to talk about collecting we like to talk about psychology we like to talk about meaning but you know what let's put on our investor hat you know some podcasts just won't tackle this but i'm gonna answer this from the perspective actually i'm just gonna share it all i'm gonna answer this from players that resonate with me based on this list and what cards i would buy if i could because i thought these cards were good buys right now so i'll start first and this is the obvious one nineteen ninety eight metal universe championship peyton manning pmg it is his rookie there's the one of one that is the gym masters is up for auction which sweat forty seven made me my favorite pop of the week i laughed so hard because he was talking shit about the gym masters basically saying it was an ugly card and i was like you know what he's kinda right like this this this card's kinda stinky looking like if the if the if the bay if the pmg was the one of one then it would be like an almighty card because of the scopes and everything but if you look at the one of one it's it's like dark and it smells like i feel like if i pulled that card out of the slab it would smell like cigarettes like it just it has michelob michelob bottle like it looks like a michelob bottle like that's good so but anyways that one's up for auction at heritage so i i mean i'd just go buy the pmg right now because that card's gonna sell for god knows what so there's one shout out peyton you rule i also what else did i put here i put any gold prism with tom brady i just i feel very good about that i know they're expensive right now but low grade like whatever if i can get like a psa seven of like a i don't know a random year like i would go for that because i just feel like there's only so many that's a good one and it's not a one of one so you might be able to afford it and then i montana so i went quarterback route like safe montana i i forever think is an undervalued guy again like josh allen montana's another guy which i'm i'm in a new era of my collecting and i i feel like there will be a joe montana card in my collection at some point soon but i love his ultimate collection stuff i just think it kicks ass and i think the fact that it might be post playing days deters it a little bit but it has all of the elements so i would probably pull something from the ultimate collection there's some great montana stuff in there yeah i'm looking at the manning on heritage right now currently with buyer's premium at a hundred and sixty four thousand with twenty four days left what's that gonna get to what's your what's your prediction it it it it estimates the estimate i think they put on is half a million and i thought that was still like i thought that was kinda low like when you consider everything but i don't know what do you think yeah i i don't know it's so hard because i feel like this is just gonna draw attention from all different types of crowds not just like manning collectors not just sports collectors but investment types like mister mister wonderful is he coming for the peyton are we gonna see the peyton gym masters around the neck but i agree the design of that year is just not my favorite the it's poopy and it it looks it's poopy it looks a little cigarette smoke beer it looks like a beer bottle from the nineteen eighties yeah and now in hand maybe it's awesome so who knows i don't wanna downplay this card for whoever ends up buying it but the yeah just not not my favorite one of one finish i'll say that yeah alright for me i don't know i think peyton is a good buy randy moss and jerry rice that's my there's my top three because i think brady is already like yeah brady's brady so i'm looking lower at the list john elway at ten is kinda surprising to me like i don't know john elway josh allen comp there's your you know mhmm like if josh allen were to like i referred to earlier win two super bowls yeah i mean it could happen because it happened with elway later in his career granted his it did help that he had trell davis so yeah i don't know it it'll be i think josh allen's story arc is one of the more interesting ones we've seen in football in a while yeah and he's just again i think i'd point like if you've ever had josh allen in fantasy you've had a good year he always puts up numbers he just never lets you down so i feel like so many people are fans of josh allen because if you ever had him you're like holy shit this guy's giving me forty points a game like hell yeah josh allen the the guaranteed rushing touchdown may be two plus the passing what is the here let me look it up real quick just for an update all time rushing touchdown leaders josh allen's twenty third all time in rushing touchdowns with seventy nine ahead of running backs like tony dorsett earl campbell deshawn mccoy steven jackson like that's insane eddie george josh allen has seventy nine rushing touchdowns he's gonna break a hundred twenty like he can get twenty one rushing touchdowns in the next two years and he'll be past marshall faulk and be in the top ten which is just wild alright last question kind of maybe piggybacks into the peyton manning discussion but from pack to the future podcast give me your best all time starting defense that would stand a chance against the unstoppable force that is drake's pc and his quest to obtain every single peyton manning card that i could ever wish to own i'll hand up i'll hang up and listen thanks i i thought you know i think it's probably some combination of blitz stunts from the likes of mister wonderful shine josh luber and spinitron like those are the that's those guys if they're blitzing those those mega bids against drake drake's toast man those guys are they're gonna be bringing it hard so drake you got some competition man you you those guys are gonna get you oh i was just thinking tracy porter just put tracy porter in there don't do that to me i actually put in a text this week that is one game i've never been able to bring myself to watching not even the first half i i just i i want nothing to do with it never never need to you burn that tape or or tie law or tie law tracy porter and tie law back there ugh drake's throwing his bids right to him alright good questions everyone there were more that came in but admittedly i was traveling all tuesday i'd asked the question monday i didn't get every not as prepped for this episode as normal but we are fighting through but we'll get to some of the questions that we may have missed this week next weekend as always keep asking your awesome questions we appreciate it yeah we're here for you this is just a little abbreviated there's a lot going on so appreciate you being here we wanted to make sure we had this piece of content out and yeah it's just a little less prepared than normal but hopefully you're still enjoying mhmm we'll do it live do it live alright market watch let's do it market watch brought to you by our good friends ed card ladder a guy that just seems like he is out of the conversation when he was so much a part of the conversation by the way i just got back and saw the video it's been a while but like the roth card sale of the black friday yeah in the setting he's like two million dollars like how about how about half a million okay but he which is a monster sale so congratulations rothcars i'm sure you're still enjoying that one and all the clips that follow but his nebula choice one of one just went off the board in the psa nine for the second time this sold in the premier for eleven or eleven hundred dollars eleven hundred eleven hundred thousand dollars a hundred eleven thousand sorry the the coffee the coffee hasn't hit yet but what is interesting about this sale which this card looks amazing his this is the second public sale and this card sold in august for a hundred ninety two k so definitely a fall from grace but we know this this is what happens when you sell a card like this less than a year apart like you're it's gonna get a haircut and that is i mean that's a pretty substantial haircut yeah and again the back to the caleb williams of it all and the remember after their rookie years jaden daniels went to the nfc championship game he was like the next one he was the most electric young quarterback he the finite sale happened for half a million dollars there's all that momentum and then just a not great sophomore year throw in some injuries and like what this card after his rookie year would have sold for especially with the finite comp of five hundred thousand i would imagine is in the in that range you know maybe a little bit over even if you say two fifty you know like half of that that's you know yeah easily a three hundred thousand dollar card after his rookie year but yeah and that yeah that's just the nature of the active qbs but we'll see what happens next alright we've got three pmg sales and i just wanna shout out which i love it when listeners kinda open my eyes a little bit to to some of this stuff but so we have some quarterbacks we've got john elway and ninety seven metal universe pmg reds selling for and a psa eight selling for fifteen k we've got a dan marino and a psa eight selling for nineteen point two k we've got a steve young and a psa seven selling for six point sixteen point two k and i think we have i'm gonna pull this up we have talked a lot about these cards and there being so many but i think the story here is the desire of the market of collectors to want the highest grading graded copy the on july fifth a psa seven elway sold for eight thousand four hundred and so this sale is a eight selling for fifteen thousand so it's almost like one grade higher doubles it the merino in july or the sale was nineteen point two k and a psa eight his psa seven sold in july for eleven thousand and then the steve young you have sixteen point two k on the steve young and then in june of this year a p that's a psa seven and a p a psa six sold for seven thousand seven hundred and twenty two dollars so that's people want who are collecting this stuff want the highest grade possible and that's gonna drive up the price for sure i'll say the thing that jumped out to me because but after hearing your point about the grade that all makes sense the steve young is a seven where the marino and elway both eights the the marino was an eight and the elway was an eight yep the highest selling of the three dan marino zero super bowls zero super bowls that is that is so such an interesting point i think that would be i here's a question for you elway marino young who's who when you just without looking at stats knowing what you know who who in your opinion was the best quarterback between those three or how would you rank them i think it's marino like marina what i said marino was unbelievable he just never won the super bowl the numbers are ridiculous like that my whole childhood growing up it was like the marino touchdown record four hundred and twenty like will it ever be broken and then like it's been shattered like five times over but yeah i mean he just and and that that's just interesting that like the memorable player who was the most skilled of the three because like steve young i feel like he's always in joe montana's shadow even though steve young had an mvp and won a super bowl it was still great stats great stats but yeah there's something about yeah marino pop culture crossover too i mean you have ace ventura that's right when i was growing up great the colts couldn't beat them they were in the same division and like when marino was coming to town it was like the biggest deal and he was just so good not saying elway wasn't elway was and so was steve young but i think for my money dan marino was the best player of the bunch yes agreed i'm also let's see real quick i wanted to look up because i know elway as far as completion percentage chatter goes that always is hanging over caleb williams because his career is sixty percent completion elway's career completion percentage is fifty six point nine and marino's career completion percentage is fifty nine point four and steve young's is sixty four point five steve young's analytics are pretty nice but early on steve young was his first seasons granted these aren't always full seasons fifty two fifty three fifty three fifty three sixty nine sixty one sixty four all just completion percentage people need to shut up that was never a thing until the last couple years it seems like as like far as a benchmark for quarterback like young quarterbacks i had a moment i think i presented it here when we were doing the football card podcast in season and looking at all the tweets and everything all the you know criticisms and this and that and i just remember being like we've we've jumped the shark this year on on on the coverage of each individual player and i can't imagine what it's going to be like this year it's like every pass is it is all scrutinized and it's like this is not a world i wanna be a part of at all no it's it's quite annoying every interview it comes up every like talking head does the same thing and i'm just ready for the games now because not like everyone's just all they can do is do the same talking points over and over and over until they have new material so i need new material alright we move over to another quarterback here which here's a here's a question for you pal marino elway young or drew brees wow brees right yeah brees number one for sure dude he beat my team in the super bowl his his seasons were nuclear he had that stretch of seasons that were just like nuclear like he go play in the superdome and he just toss it up and they score a touchdown every play yeah it it's almost like it became so normal that it wasn't impressive exactly but like then when you look back like some of these passing yard seasons let's start from two thousand eight to two thousand sixteen he went for five thousand then forty three hundred forty six hundred fifty four hundred fifty one hundred fifty one hundred forty nine hundred forty eight hundred fifty two hundred like he has eighty thousand career passing yards like let's see most passing yards in a season nfl like i know manning's number one but brees has to just be all over the top ten so manning's one brees is two brady's three mahomes is four brady brees brees brees roethlisberger jameis winston tenth most passing yards in the season fifty one zero nine shout out but yeah brees is all was that the season where he had like thirty touchdowns and thirty interceptions i think so what an iconic season the thirty thirty thirty three touchdowns thirty picks so sick so so drew brees like this guy talk about like being over time being lost in the shadow i think us manning fans feel that about the brady factor and how it's like brady is so overwhelmingly the like most recognizable and popular player because of his super bowls and us manning fans are like did she like it's always like the angles are like well did you watch peyton manning play but like i can't imagine like the breeze apologist because breeze is even further down the list based on like mhmm the recognition over time and brees beat manning in a super bowl i can't believe i'm saying that out loud but it's true i just think like i don't know i look at all the players like a player like drew brees to me like it feels like from a collectability perspective will age like a fine wine just based on not only winning a super bowl but the stats are just insane so the card is the twenty fourteen finest super fracture in a psa ten and this card sold in twenty two two times first time for one thousand two hundred and thirty two dollars the second sale in twenty two was for two thousand three hundred and ten dollars and then this card just sells in the weekly for ten thousand eight hundred dollars wow sick card very sick card sick card alright we're closing it out with you gotta talk about mark sanchez especially because he's got a pending criminal trial here in indianapolis i was just on jury duty recently i actually got elected to the bench and was in a criminal trial as a juror which was quite the experience but when i got called in i was like dude if it's the mark sanchez trial like i'm gonna lose my mind i'm pretty sure i'd be disqualified because they would be like aren't you the guy on the football card podcast and i was like yeah and they're like you can't be here so but sanchez time and place actually like you know he gets a lot of shit bud fumble hot dog on the sideline but did this guy like the the colts played him in the afc championship i mean like he they they they they had a run like that was a team that was like the last time the jets were like really good and so his two thousand nine topps chrome superfractor rookie auto one of one went off the board mc sports cards for three thousand five hundred and fifty seven dollars so quite the sale for mark sanchez wow it's the sanchez yeah the back to back afc championship runs as a rookie in a second year insane how much like one play a butt fumble can like change your career yep he was he was decent for you know three and a half years in the league but that that defense helped quite a bit a hundred percent and wow i wish i wish you were on the san sanjay's court the trial can you imagine that would have been amazing just given the football card pod updates live tweeting from the as a juror i'm pretty sure i'd be arrested i don't think you can do that but wow but what a card that's a that's a sticker auto though right yeah it sucks but the card itself is like the the action shot at the rookie photo shoot like it's it's so good i love i love the card even though it's like a sticker auto it's well it and it's hard to tell it's a sticker auto which if you're gonna have a sticker auto at least make it very difficult for me to know or it's funny that i almost even prefer the like older contenders where the autograph yeah thing is like the silver block like which is even more clearly a sticker auto than a clear one but for some reason it just kinda aesthetically looks a little better like if you're gonna give me a sticker put some put some weight on it make it like silvery or not just clear plastic whatever saran wrap but those are the sales thank you card ladder for the data alright any pickups i got i got nothing gonna see no i'm i'm i'm i am in sale i'm in i'm in sales mode right now yeah it's been rough but it's i i'm in i'm feeling invigorated it's cutting down the collection building up the collection i'm i'm i've been i haven't had one of these in like three years and i'm going through one right now so no pickups to report on oh actually i have one that pissed me off so deandre swift twenty twenty five prism gold popped up in london or in the uk and it like i'm so i'm offering like you know it's doing the conversion on there and i get it for twenty us dollars like he accepts my offer for twenty us dollars i was like oh sick shipping's twenty five dollars us i did i just didn't notice or pay attention and i'd because then like i saw like i sent the offer and then like it hit my card and i got the notification that it was like fifty dollars i'm like the fuck what was that a fifty dollar card and then i look and got me on shipping so damn tariffs i know i don't even have the card yet but that pissed me off what what's the card that you shipping pay attention to shipping everyone it was a gold prism twenty twenty five prism gold deandre swift so i still feel like you you made out pretty well on that fifty bucks all in yeah like not mad at that it was more the thinking i had landed it for twenty twenty five and got blindsided by the the pounds they hit me with the the pounds alright card call out national pickups come on national pickups so like if you're not there past national pickups yes and any card you've ever acquired at the national send them tag the
