The Football Card Podcast #52: We Celebrate One Year of The Football Card Podcast
welcome back to the football card podcast here on the stacking slabs network hosted by my good friend john at pac nicholson and presented by card ladder the official data provider of the football card podcast and the broader stacking slabs network linebacker summer continues fifty two big one big because there's a lot of really good fifty twos and big because this means we have been doing the football card podcast for an entire calendar year we appreciate all of your support telling a damn friend following what we're doing here joining the patreon it means a ton we can feel the momentum we can feel the energy lot of you football card collectors get your fix here each and every week and we're here to bring that to you interesting episode at the year mark pac was in the elements in the mountains the wi fi signal wasn't great so we did not have video for the patreon subscribers because we tried to do it and it was just too laggy so getting the audio feed here on the stacking slabs network i promise you that the conversation still is full of energy i'm fully caffeinated as i recorded i know pac probably had a cup or two but appreciate it we just wanna say thanks a year for a podcast that started as a idea and we've come all the way here and a big reason is because of all of you so we're here we're excited football card podcast episode fifty two coming at you hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pac nicholson and with me as always is brett mister stacking slabs himself brett how you doing i'm well happy one year anniversary of the football card podcast i think we must get that out of the way and we also must must let everyone know that this is a little bit of an unorthodox type of recording on the year anniversary you're off-site in a remote location we've been trying to finagle the internet and so we are this is the first time we're doing it why not do it on the one year mark without videos to try to make sure we get the audio so sorry patreon group no visuals this week but if you listen to this on the main feed hopefully it goes interrupted so yeah man we're here yeah we're we're fighting through it out here in the mountains in colorado didn't really think about the wifi situation just assumed it would work and it's it's working it's just a a little little choppy here and there but we're we're making it through we we overcome adversity here on the football card pod that's what we try to do and i thought maybe a good place to start this conversation would be do a look back and i spent some time looking back on episode one of the football card podcast and just some of the things we talked about and i i wanted to ask you because i thought this would be fun out of the gates that we we all episode one we reported two pickups apiece and let's see if you still have those cards so the two the two cards a year ago were that you picked up were the two thousand and two finest eddie george refractor out of two fifty and the two thousand ten tops chrome matte forte gold refractor out of fifty now are you you still got those have those gone where where are they at well so the eddie george yes i still have that because i received it the twenty ten tops chrome matte forte gold i never got that card no shit yep up in the mail so and now that i'm thinking about it i need to i feel like i it was in the process of ebay where i'm like hey this never showed up and i don't know what if that ever got resolved so i think i'm out forty bucks there which i'm gonna think of it i need to try and battle to get that back well this is probably why this is probably why you're so reluctant at this point to talk about pickups before you have them in hand here on the football card podcast yeah this is one of three now that have gone missing because i shared them on football card pod too early kinda keep it close to the chest until those cards are in hand from now on what about what about you you've got yeah on here your two pickups were twenty fifteen prism andre johnson gold vinyl and twenty fourteen reggie wayne gold prism i forgot about that card yeah so i i still have both of them and it was interesting to look back so the andre johnson gold vinyl out of five psa nine was a bin smash on ebay i think i paid like three hundred bucks and what was interesting about that is i had never seen the card but then on the side randomly i was in a conversation with somebody v on facebook that i found who owned a copy and it wasn't that copy so it was like two copies came in my world at once i ended up buying the one that was on ebay and then the twenty fourteen reggie wayne gold that triggered a memory that i had of brooks lsu tiger collector sixty five sending me that via ebay and i think it was listed on ebay and he sent it to me on like a saturday and it was listed at like a hundred and twenty five bucks or like a hundred and fifty bucks and i remember going and seeing his his message and like my stomach dropping and i clicked it and it was gone and yes that that that way it was like devastating and then i don't remember if i like communicated out my devastation but somehow i ended up having somebody reach out to me maybe yeah i don't wanna mention names i think i might know who it was but i can't remember but anyways i ended up buying getting access to a different copy and i think i paid three times i paid a lot more maybe more than the price but that was a card that i really needed and i have completed since then the reggie wayne playing days gold prism run twenty twelve twenty thirteen and twenty fourteen so that was a that was a pivotal card and i am happy to report that i own both of them still and i mean in hindsight yeah maybe you paid three x that bin smash but i feel like pretty good purchase looking back yeah and it's one of those things and we get into this where it's like i would have paid a lot more you know when it's a card that's like in your pc and you need it because of what you're doing obviously there's limitations and you you don't wanna be pushed over the skis and maybe this is where my disdain for the one of one market is right now where the the owners of one of ones are so relentless at trying to get the top bill because they it's a one of one but i feel like with golds and gold vinyl like i like still like i can push up to the top of what i'd pay for those cards but it it's still not like devastating on my bank account if i get those so that's maybe that's why i'm i'm just really pissed off at like the the the one the way we're treating these one of ones these days and you know everyone's using the same song and dance for why they're priced the way they are but maybe we maybe i'm gonna reverse hex this because we've gotten so hot hot on one of ones recently and maybe i'm just gonna start talking about why they're all not important and maybe that'll help yeah they're all just gimmick cards no one likes a one zero one why would anyone ever wanna collect a one zero one you should just sell them yeah yeah let's let's yeah let's sell all of our one of ones and reset the market the other thing the biggest gripe what's the biggest gripe right now with one of one market is it strictly just the insane prices of top scrum super factors you know that's one of them but there is an unwillingness to negotiate i have found and and and i understand if you have one of ones from like the players that are in the most demand or all time greats i i get that but when it's just like a random guy on my team and you're trying to get me to pay over you know in anywhere between a thousand dollars and twenty five hundred dollars for that when i know i'm the only person that's going to even sniff that it's like let's have a conversation like let's be flexible but yeah people just wanna sit on dead inventory and i'm just seeing dead inventory everywhere i'm like who else is buying this shit than me so like just keep let it sit and whenever you get bored of it being dead and the the money just sitting there you you give me a call yeah yeah i think we just gotta wait them out eventually they'll find something else and have to sell those hopefully so we we don't really need the cards right now right there's a game of patience and we can just wait it out and i feel like we we all suck as collectors with the waiting game and waiting it out but sometimes it's just that's the poison to the the people who list cards very high they don't they don't want any anyone waiting it out so if we can be the poison to to their to their kind of and disrupt their you know fluid cards in cards out and kinda be a roadblock there then maybe eventually we'll get the card at the price we want may that may that's my utopian thinking of it i like that it'll all work out it will so i also noticed in the notes that i asked you how you were feeling about the bears and this is in june of twenty twenty five and you said you were feel you were giving it a seven of seven out of ten this point which to me like knowing what i know about the bears going into last season there may maybe it was jacked up a little bit because new coach inside but that that seems like a very high score and i'm just curious how you're feeling like on the ten scale right now how do you feel going into next season like if seven was your score last year yeah that i mean that was fully off the ben johnson kool aid that i must have been drinking going into because yes seven up at dead's pretty high all things considered where the bears had ended the season before that and then i i gotta go back and listen to where i was after week two after the bears lost like fifty two to ten to the lions and they're o and two and i think the colts were two and o and looked like super bowl favorites so things things fluctuated over the course of the football card pod i think right now oh that's tough because i don't wanna go higher than a seven because that just leads to devastation and heartbreak if i say i'm at a a nine then you know there's only you can really only go down so i'll say i'm an eight i'm an eight right now okay marginal improvement although i feel like you should maybe be closer to a nine but i get where you're coming from i i went into last season that and it was the first season that i had in a long time where i said i have zero expectations and my i think i adamantly talked about how daniel jones has to be the leader right now for the quarterback job because they were doing the whole like camp we'll figure it out and right i'm glad i had zero expectations and this is the interesting part because although i had zero expectations in the colts you know season fell off a cliff after daniel jones got hurt there look like as i'm prepping for this season and i'm looking back at last season like that start that they went on was like the most exciting time i've had as a colts fan since andrew luck was here so it's a weird look back because it was a tale of two seasons and the first part was was so much fun that i'm like what am i hopeful for like and it's just the testament to say like you never wanna get too excited because anything can happen at any time in the nfl yep as soon as you have those high expectations they will get crushed big time so what are you what are you feeling right now going into the cold season one to ten i i guess i didn't quite think of this myself i will say this i feel root like in the most optimistic viewpoint possible and that starts with a healthy daniel jones which all indications from otas suggest that he's looking great he's looking ahead of schedule he will be ready to play week one now we haven't seen the mobility which is such a key piece of the steichen offense along with the way daniel jones plays that'll be interesting to see but i wanna i wanna live in this world where the offensive efficiency that started the season exists at some level so i'm gonna say okay it might not be where it was but it'll be hovering around there and then i think that the secondary is going to be very very good and i am a full off season with sauce moody ward coming back he was contemplating retirement cam bynum and then we got mister gimi that as the other safety who's been everyone anyone's talked about during otas so our defense sucked last year because we our our linebacking core couldn't cover anybody and we would just get picked apart so i'm optimistic that the defense will be improved so i don't know man i'm just i'm just looking for ten wins and trying to trying to compete for an afc south championship because it's been so long but if you look at the south it's one of those divisions you just look at it's like anything can happen here so i don't know i'll i'll i'm gonna i'll be i'll take the seven i'm gonna be a seven going into this season this year seven's such a good number and so you gotta yeah keep it even keeled going and i think too just with the way that the bears season unfolded last year yeah i'm just i'm trying to do is talk myself into a ten but i'm trying to i'm trying to not it's better to it's better to set low expectations by the way did you i felt like this would be a topic it's not on our run sheet but have you been keeping up with the brendan sorsby situation of it all kind of but fill me in i know he was he was gambling on games his own games yeah so we've advanced to pass the gambling pass the like he might play for texas tech and then all of a sudden yesterday which you're remote so you probably didn't see this he plans to enter the supplemental draft which there has not been a supplemental draft since twenty twenty three and the dynamics of the supplemental draft are quite fascinating because i had to because there's been such a lag between the last one i had to really reeducate myself on how the supplemental draft works so do you do you have any insight or information or any knowledge around the supplemental draft and like the construct and how it works no and i'm very curious and like why now why is there one now okay so play basically the supplemental draft is in place based on eligibility changes with players and rare and unique circumstances like this soresby situation so soresby's looking at it and being like you know i can whatever the way this falls if i i can either like probably agree to some sort of suspension if i played with the ncaa whether it's four or eight games that might hurt my draft stock maybe i feel like this is unfair so i'm gonna take the ncaa to court and just be in a litigation battle that might hurt my draft stock too because of just this gray area but then there's the opportunity to be in the supplemental draft where you just say alright i'm not even doing college football anymore and i think i'm good enough that someone's going to take me in the supplemental draft which somebody is going to take brendan soresby in the supplemental draft because if you look at the quarter twenty twenty seven draft which is supposed to be a very strong draft better quarterbacks soresby was being talked about as a potential first round draft pick so you've got this guy with a little gambling problem who probably shouldn't be in the ncaa although he is seeking treatment right now he's in some like five week program or whatever but he is saying i wanna be drafted and so nfl teams can put in bids for brendan soresby and the bid needs to basically say like this is the round i would draft him in and so if you're the highest bid you get him and you lose that pick so i think the last there was a i think a player for the cardinals and it was like a fifth round pick they gave up but like this is a whole different situation like he could be a franchise quarterback so it's like what are teams going to do and there's always quarterback needy teams so there's the character thing too on top of it so it'll be very interesting to see how this all shakes out so you would put in your bid and then that's your twenty twenty seven draft pick wherever you decide yeah wherever you decide that which round you would take him in yeah i feel like someone would give up a first you've that's i think i don't know if we'll get there but i'm curious if we get there and if we do get there it's probably gonna be the cleveland browns but yeah i think yeah i think people are saying like no way anyone gives up anything higher than a three but i don't know man if this guy is like high on your board and you think he could be a franchise quarterback like winning matters more than anything else so this is like a fun little storyline going into the off season yeah this is good i will have to keep tabs on this yes i've been out of the loop the last few days i've been out here like four days five days now and kind of been unplugged which is nice but i don't know i feel like as mikhail bridges would say fuck them picks like whereas the rams would say like you know it's it's the whole scratch off ticket theory like if you are a team that is gonna you know hoping to be a playoff team where your first round pick in twenty twenty seven is gonna be in the high twenties you know why not take a flyer on getting your franchise quarterback i guess that's kinda what the rams did with taking ty simpson but instead of taking him in the actual draft you could've got soresby for the you know the next year's pick so i don't know i you're as i'm talking about it a first router does seem steep but i've seen crazier things i could see a team a super desperate team maybe maybe going for a second maybe a second is where it ends up going yeah the foot the i have yeah i feel like i have a little bit of reservations on the first round just based on when you look at all these trades and all the moves these guys and when picks are involved it feels like the the first rounders they're they're getting more protected now than ever before but you don't see much movement when it comes to the quarterback position so who knows but anyways i'll be paying attention i thought that was interesting the the other thing i wanted to report on from episode number one was we highlighted the nineteen ninety eight contenders peyton manning rookie ticket auto out of two hundred and a bgs nine and since then in august of twenty five the that card sold for thirty thousand so it it when we talked about it it was twenty five thousand so my question to you a card increasing in value of five k in a year is a lot but in hobby terms it doesn't seem like a lot like what what do you think that tells us about who we are as collectors because if you were to say like you bought an asset and you know for a a certain price and then you know a a few months later the card goes up five thousand like a lot of people wouldn't blanket that in the hobby but then in real life most people would be like holy shit how do i put all of my money into this operation like what do you what do you think that tells us about us as collectors well and even i'm seeing on here you said it sold in august for that price so that yes so five k increase in just a couple months if we recorded that in june twenty five and then sold again in august for thirty and who knows what has there been a more recent sale since then i don't think of the the the b g s nine with ten auto i don't think yeah i mean i feel like i bet if we look at all our sales from those first few episodes they've all probably gone up i mean and i saw this note that you had down here about just the football card market in general up forty one percent since we started the pot yeah how much credit should we give ourselves for the the the soaring football card market right now i mean we've got a place every week football card collectors can tune in to listen to two guys talk about football cards and football cards my thinking is this gets the listeners so excited that they just decide to put all of their money into football cards no more international basketball sales high end basketball sales no more vintage baseball sales we're pouring all of our money into football cards because we have the football card podcast to get us excited every week that's right a year straight shout out all the loyal listeners for sticking around for a year but i do wanna acknowledge the fact that because i've been thinking about this more of we have this platform right and we choose to broadcast our opinions which then like i don't know i feel sometimes weird about like talking about certain sets or certain players because i never want that to get taken as like you should be behind these sets or players so i just hope that the general takeaway from the football card pod and what we're doing is like the idea is behind collecting and not the specific collectible like i'd instead of like we're never saying collect the bears collect the colts we're just talking about team collecting or andrew luck or priest haltons we're not saying go buy those guys we're saying find that one player that connects with you so i don't know just wanted you know a year in to acknowledge that the the platform that we have and that that we're self aware of it cause you know as when you make yourself a voice in the hobby you can be open to criticism or critique or whatever and yeah i don't know just something i've been brewing on lately what do you think about that all that i think that's spot on i will say from doing this for six years every week or now basically every day that when you talk about cards publicly and share their opinion your opinion on cards naturally there are people that are going to take someone talking into a microphone publicly as a way to try to find an advantage or an opportunity and it's a weird world man it is a weird world when i and it doesn't happen so much it's not like a routine thing but there will be times ever so often where people will have mentioned hey i heard you talking about x parallel on the football card podcast and look at the card i bought and it's i'm always like i wanna be like cool card but i also like i'm just like oh i'd i mean i hope i i hope it like just opened a door for those collectors to then go explore themselves and come to the conclusion that this is the card for me and this is what i believe in but i will also say human beings in in general are are pretty pretty lazy people like i i try to i try to i love the research aspect of building out my collection and it's part of the hobby that i really enjoy i like learning i'm very curious as a person so like that uncovering and getting my hands dirty like i don't know what i would do without the self discovery but i understand like that does not motivate some people and some people just wanna hear from someone and say yep let me go do that so it's just that it's an odd dynamic but i always and i think we do a pretty fair job of this we we never suggest that people should go buy something because of a a period of time where we think something is too low or a set that people don't have attention on like i feel like we are pretty mindful of not doing that and just sharing our opinions about kind of what's in front of us and why that we like or don't like certain things yep with great power comes great responsibility it's what we're doing over here on the football card pod yeah it's crazy a year look at us and this a year in and this is the most shoddy recording that we're doing so far and you would think the progress would be there in a year but you know it's we're learning we are and i'm i'm excited and i just looked at the notes it's been all over the place i still have episode fifty one we're in episode fifty two so why why don't why don't we get into the numbers i i feel like we've got some guys here let's do it fifty twos hall of famers ray lewis patrick willis mike webster robert brazile and frank gatsky we are in linebacker summer we are in the thick of linebacker summer and fifty two is so good i mean those hall of famers need no introduction and i'm i gotta shout out my guy khalil mack just bears legend only three years in chicago and even as a you know die hard bears fan it seems like his time was longer for the bears but made such a big impact especially in his first year with the bears and then has gone on and you know been racking up the sacks with the chargers he's dipped to a hundred and thirteen career sacks which is i mean hall of fame trajectory for sure so gotta shout out my guy khalil mack when you think about okay three years but i think pretty impactful i think about a guy is in a similar light like a frank gore for me where you know he better known elsewhere but the years he had as a going to be hall of famer i would imagine and i would imagine cleel mac is going to be a hall of famer like these guys that are hall of fame in nature but might represent another team more if they go into canton like how do you think about khalil mack in terms of like your bears collecting like is he a guy you're like desiring to chase do you wait until certain cards pop up you're not really interested in this card it's like how do you consider him i have a couple gold prism cleomax in a bears uniform that's like if something pops up and the price is fair i'll go for it i'm not like dying to get a cleomac finite in a collection i mean i'd love one it's twenty twenty i feel like sold recently or i've seen that before but it's not one of my top ones like just because of the fact he's not you know so locked in with the bears like don't think cleo mack and bears right away i think jay cutler i think of the bears right away i think of matt forte think of the bears right away cleo mack's a bit bit different so i don't know yeah definitely a player i wouldn't buy cards of but not like one of my top top of the pyramid type guys that makes sense i you know and any other linebacker summer is just so challenging because there's so many guys that kick ass that have awesome cards and it's just really hard to decide and i i'm feeling a little bit guilty right now that the fact that we're not gonna be spotlighting patrick willis because i'm going with someone else but when i think about patrick willis playing and i'll just remark on this it feels like every time i watch this guy play he he have like you know fifteen twenty tackles they're an interesting element for patrick willis that i always associate with is a fantasy league that i was in for so long had a defensive side of the ball too mhmm and mhmm patrick patrick willis was by far and away the number one defensive player for so many years be based on how many his tackling history and so it was always fun to see like come like round four instead of taking like your second running back people would start drafting patrick willis so that's he was a transcended fantasy player and obviously a hall of famer and one of the all time greats for the forty niners so i just wanted to take a second to highlight patrick willis and he seems like one of those guys that he lives on because i always see incredible patrick willis cards get posted on instagram which is fun to see yeah shout out individual defensive player fantasy leagues one of my elites have two idp slots and yes patrick willis was always huge and luke kieckley and paul puzluzny from utah was a yeah a sleeper for whatever reason i remember he was just getting over a hundred tackles every year and those solo tackles being worth a point if you had a linebacker you know grabbing seven eight tackles a game that's huge sean lee was another random linebacker who was always drafted high because he had he was always above a hundred tackles that was another name that came to my mind but i wanna highlight and that darius leonard shout out darius leonard yeah i mean he was just a freaking nature with the fumbles and the picks and everything i i hope at some point people go back and just realize the greatness of of of leonard the maniac i mean he was on a hall of fame trajectory and just god man it's just the injuries one you know one little injury of nerve and then all of a sudden you can't bend over and you can't play football anymore so life comes at you fast but i wanted to highlight ray lewis i felt like we gotta talk ray lewis two time super bowl champ super bowl mvp two time nfl defensive player of the year seven time first team all pro three time second team all pro three time solo tackle leader three time combined tackles leader he had two thousand and fifty nine total tackles which is the nfl leader all time leader peyton manning once said ray lewis was the greatest player he ever played against ray lewis played from nineteen ninety six to two thousand and twelve as a raven the longevity is there and so my question that i wanna present back here is ray lewis the greatest defensive player of all time i mean it's he has a great case for it i think the longevity too is awesome and from a card perspective what a great era of sets to be in from ninety six all the way to twenty twelve first year of prism just like shout out chris see ice cards great ravens collector just the ravens runs just having those super bowls in like the late you know fleer topps era but then also the prism stuff just dudes all across the board in multiple eras but ray lewis far as best let's see i'm looking up his first team all pros so he's seven time first team all pro that's pretty crazy two time defensive player of the year got some mvp votes some years super bowl mvp did he get a super bowl mvp yeah yeah he did wow two super bowls i mean all time leader in tackle like yeah i mean is he the goat a couple couple murders got away with too i mean that's something allegedly yeah allegedly of course him and marvin allegedly yeah i mean i i wouldn't argue against it i feel like i do love the we love an aaron donald around here on the football card pod and lawrence taylor is up there but ray lewis has an argument with all those guys i sat i sat there and i ran through it i ran through the aaron donalds i ran through the lawrence taylors the deion sanders i just i i ran through it all the reggie whites and i can't put anybody ahead of ray lewis for me for me i just the the yeah the accolades everything and yeah i don't know he without ray lewis did the raven ravens ever really like get off the blocks as a franchise i don't think he's just like he is he'll always be that franchise's best player no matter what like nobody else is ever going to come along while we're alive and be a better player than ray lewis i don't think so i don't know all those things combined i'm just like i think ray lewis is the greatest defensive player of all time and i've never sat and tried to think through it but i think that's where i'm landing right now yeah i mean the more i'm looking at his pro football reference page and just in general so another thing i always like to do is that we've talked about is looking up the the av the approximate value is how they you know give a rating to these players and of everyone to wear fifty two ray lewis is number one with an av of two twenty four which rarely do i see anyone in the two hundreds and then the next closest is mike webster with one fifty also a hall of famer but just having that what seventy four point gap between ray lewis at number two who's also a hall of famer is pretty crazy ray lewis is what's pat what's patrick willis patrick willis one zero eight good lord i mean patrick willis only played eight years so he just didn't you know have his because part of that is a longevity stat just because every year you're adding to your overall av but ray lewis was just so consistent every year he's like right around twenty is which is crazy so yeah i think you got a good good point here i think he might be the goat i think the longevity side though should be rewarded and taken into consideration i am i grow older and become a football fan i just like i don't know when i was getting ready this morning we were talking about or i was thinking about like us recording this and i was thinking about longevity in the prism era we had like who is the prism king and we talked about like russell wilson who's now retired and matthew stafford being in every year of prism and i just i i consider that and i i started thinking about stafford i'm like man he has just had a hell of a career and obviously he's super bowl mvp all those things but the longevity is is something and we thought we talked about aaron rodgers last week longevity there you go to like positional players like we're here like locally there's a lot of chatter around another contract for jonathan taylor which would be his third contract on the colts which you just don't see like teams giving out three contracts to one player i think the last time it happened was frank gore in san francisco where he got three contracts with san francisco but it just doesn't happen because these guys come and go and people don't wanna pay them moneys the the money so i don't know like my position is is like if you could get three contracts for one team like that is a signal of longevity and that is something i think we should celebrate and we take all this all the way back to ray lewis but he didn't leave baltimore like he ninety six to twenty twelve just absolute domination so i think longevity is is underrated and i know we have talked about like these moments of time like chris johnson and what he did in this moment and know priest holmes in these moments which are the peaks are great but i don't know something about just being there and being consistent and being an all pro player for a very long time that stands out to me because it's just it's very very rare yeah i mean feel like longevity the only reason it gets a knock now is basketball lebron james i feel like before everyone always admired that kareem played twenty years and then in football like brady playing into his forties it was like woah this is amazing we've never seen anything like that but the narrative around longevity is like oh you're just stat padding or know you're just continuing to play to pile up stats but if you can still play and pile up stats why wouldn't you like i'm not mad at ray lewis for playing seventeen years it's like hell yeah especially football the way the body the the beatings these guys take like but you know imagining how i feel waking up every day as and there's players like ray lewis is older than me playing in the nfl that's insane yeah i i i i was getting like really nerdy into this and like jonathan taylor specifically and they were talking about his carries at wisconsin all the way through the colts i mean he's been the bell cow everywhere he's been and it's the volume of carries across like his collegiate days to now i wish i could remember the number but it's it's absolutely insane but still still going so maybe aside here because you triggered something on a little basketball card podcast here obviously like i've shared like on my platforms like the the knicks like big win as much as you know they they were the best team without question they deserve the the victory best team you know they dominated and so we'll just leave that at that congratulations new york knicks as nba champions but we're we you celebrate these championship moments for like three days and it's on to like the draft in the next season but you mentioned lebron james like we are on we are on lebron watch like that's what i'm paying attention to now because you've already had you know klutch come out and say you know he's we're we're we're listening to people talk to us now and so i don't know right now we're in june what do you what do you think's happening with lebron next year like if you had to bet where what's gonna what's gonna go down i bet he stays in los angeles i just can't see i mean i i love the idea of him going back to cleveland for a year i think that would be a fun final thing but i don't know anytime i think something like that'll happen it's doesn't like i i feel like he'll just stay with the lakers one more year do a final farewell thing that's what what i think i don't but he's out here already on instagram with a gray beard golfing all the time maybe he's just done i would that would i would think that's awesome too if he just called it ended it right now but but then i'd want him to to see i'd wanna watch like one more season knowing that like this is the the end but i don't know i haven't been keeping up on it enough i need to see what wendy's saying and what you know the what's polymarket saying where is he going that's where's kalshi saying he's going those those places are always right these days yeah i i don't know if he's gonna be stay in la i i don't know we'll see if you can find out dig into what polymarket is saying right now as i'm digging through this that would be helpful but i think you know he's definitely going to he's definitely going to come back because you've gotta give like the final lap tour and i would imagine maybe it is la but he's he's going to pick the place where he can win another championship and that that's yeah i feel like he's he's gotta try to win one more and find the best situation and you know i'll keep my optimism that him and hallie are boys they're doing a podcast together at fanatics fest they've been on record for really liking each other so how about lebron james here in indiana i can i can dream can't i yeah alright so polymarket has pacers as under one percent chance the lakers are a seven seventy one percent chance so they're leading okay the warriors at twenty percent are number two okay and then the cavs down there at twelve percent so wait i i guess i don't know how poly market works exactly because it's saying lakers seventy nine percent warriors twelve cleveland twelve well that's over a hundred percent so i guess that's not how they they do things on the market but yeah lakers are are i i don't wanna stymno the warriors that would no not be fun no i don't wanna see them stay in la i want i want i want something just different the final year so same i i would ideal to me is go to the cavs for one final year that would be cool but but did you see the cleveland cavaliers did you do you does does he really wanna walk into that situation no he does not wanna go play with james harden so maybe maybe we'd flush all of this down the toilet and lebron just goes and signs with jerry jones and plays for the cowboys for a year that would be actually that's number one is seeing lebron line up at tight end for one year i bet right now he would be a top five tight end in the league i think so i mean he's he's six nine like it's so crazy to think of basketball player heights compared to football player heights where like calvin johnson is huge randy moss is huge and they're both like six five like they'd be just guards on a basketball floor got wendy catching fates oh god i no he'd be broken in half you've got you've got mcbride you've got loveland you've got warren and you've got lebron james competing for the all pro spots i'm taking lebron hey here's the question and we can move on if lebron james got up and had a press conference and said the game of basketball has been a lovely game it's meant so much to me it's meant so much to my family and i appreciate all you as fans and all the contributions hopefully you can appreciate that i made to the game of basketball i will always love it but i am taking my talents to the national football league and there's only one place that i wanna play i wanna play tight end for the chicago bears are you are you are you saying hey loveland like like but love like if lebron james goes there loveland can't play this year like what how what what are you doing oh that's that's brutal because i love me some colston loveland but i'd i'd have to oh man i want the circus i want i want bronze i just want that twenty three well who's wearing twenty three now roshan johnson i don't know the the james bears jersey i might just have to get a custom james bears jersey and really just for for myself yeah i don't know that'd be that'd be tough because i do think colson loveland is an absolute baller yeah he's he's shown that before we move on this and i know we got a mailbag to get to i just wanted to highlight the highest selling ray lewis card of all time for nineteen thousand five hundred dollars is the absolute kaboom purple super bowl vertical psa ten so they i'm looking at these sales of ray lewis and if you collect ray lewis you're probably like hey shut up ray lewis seems like a guy people should be buying i mean maybe you can't find this stuff but his prices comparatively to me saying that and again i'm not getting people to try to buy stuff but in my opinion he's the greatest defensive player ever i feel like his his cards haven't quite caught up yet yeah and looking at this purple kaboom that's the only sale of that card like i know those aren't numbered and they're said to be super short print or whatever but that is pretty crazy that i mean is it a one of a kind card there's only been one sale yeah but the purp the purple i mean this isn't a card for me but purple with the ravens jersey that's that's a nice little combo yeah you get you get the color match which is kinda nice but yeah we got some quite by the way everyone we are we're the most we're recording this a day in advance we've got an away game for a pack we aren't as prepared as we normally are so we're we we got questions from you so i have not really looked at them so should we just let these rip let's let's do it yes this thank you all bearing with us through the adversity here but we've got a few questions for episode fifty two first up from van isle cards my fellow girl dads is it time for us to start training our daughters to be future flag football stars the sport really seems to be gaining momentum i could definitely see leaf putting out a flag football set if they haven't already is flag football gaining momentum that's news to me i'd i've heard some chatter i think there's some validity to this with females getting involved in football i think there's leagues that are supportive of females playing football like i i have not dug into it but i think there's some validity to this my response to this is i might be interested in pushing my daughters to flag football but first we're gonna have to to make sure that they don't wanna be the next aew or wwe champion so we got i'm i'm running the the the pc in my basement and trying to you know we're working on how to bump and we're working on say safety when it comes to wrestling they they get power bombed each night well the the youngest doesn't she's too little but i kinda call it a power bomb when i'm putting in her inner bed but yeah if they don't have interest in wanting to be a professional wrestling wrestler because that's my my dream is to retire from all of this and just go travel the world and watch my daughters just you know wrestle the entrances the fan bases i wanna be a part of that so i'm hoping at least one of them shows interest in that if none of them do maybe we'll look at flag football or just stick to dance i don't know we'll see well i love thinking of wrestling as part of the nighttime routine like did you brush your teeth did you take your chops you know you you gotta give fifteen chops before you go off to bed what do you think you'd be a flag football dad what what are you thinking no i don't think so i mean if if that's what she wants to do go for it but yeah i feel like there's other past times i'm gonna try and push first ahead of flag football but hey if the the gridiron's calling let's go and let let's go pro and then yes i would want cards maybe lebron needs to go to the flag football league maybe that's what will happen playing a bunch of playing with a bunch of yeah i feel like so isn't flag football gonna be an international sport like isn't it gonna be an olympic sport is that my imagination or side yes that is correct in a couple years like twenty twenty eight summer games as flag football i feel like you gotta have some nba guys right i know i i always wonder how they pick some of these teams like when you see those things where it's like here's the us men's basketball three on three team and it's three dudes i've never seen in my entire life yep i'm like how would you how are there not three pro guys who would wanna do this so i don't know i i would love to see if the olympic flag football team is all nfl players but then i wouldn't be shocked if it's you know people i've never heard of how about world cup card podcast did you watch the united states i did not but i had tabs on it i was checking in on that one but now i'm kinda been on this remote tip the last few days so i haven't done as much tv watching or catching up as normal but i mean the an impressive outing border won and looked really really good did you watch yeah i did it was perfect because i had almost forgotten about it and got done with the nighttime routine and i was like oh this is great and it was certainly entertainment definitely not trying to get over my skis well hopefully make it out of group play which it looks like they should but i was telling talking to my wife we've had world cup on every night and it's fun to to watch it and i was just saying you know these math these these matches are fine but it's really like the the knockout plays where like you get the the teams who can actually win and they're you know they're not trying to tie like they're just going for it all so i'm ready for that but i've been enjoying the world cup it's been fun yeah it is a great event i love watching it and yeah when we get in the knockout just the the atmosphere is awesome i've also loved on social media all the european fans experiencing american culture for the first time like going to a bass pro shop or going to arby's so i have i've seen that content i enjoy that content no doubt what's what's the next question here alright from our guy t k d tickets he said ever since tops now premiered in twenty sixteen i've been a fan i know when it debuted that many didn't like it since it was a pack issued but over the last few years i think collectors have come to appreciate it first year cards of aaron judge and shohei ohtani have really taken off and more recently the curry james durant and jack hughes cards have been huge hits how do you think the football card community will take to tops now i see the mendoza draft selection card did a hundred and twenty six thousand i think that means a hundred and twenty six thousand units or did he have a card sale for a hundred and twenty six thousand dollars i did i did not see that i read it as if he had a card sale we we can do a quick ole mendoza yeah and his it must be units must be units i fully expect yeah i think so because i think they released that number mhmm i fully expect topps to create game used relic cards with actual game used footballs the only downside is that it takes at least a month for cards to hit collectors' hands so i guess the question here is how do you think the football card community will take to tops now i think that i think that there will probably be some interest but i don't think it's going to be widespread i think we know that we like the moments as collectors we've talked about the the finest product and why we like finest growing up but i i think tops now is a great program i really do and i have bought some tops now cards in the past but whenever i have to sit there and make considerations about what stays and what what goes like i have got rid of those tops now cards because there is like something deep down where i it's a cash machine for tops one like literally like they're just printing money and it's these cards aren't in packs they're just getting printed on demand and of course you can they can they've got the parallels and you're hoping you get a parallel but i just have reservations a little bit just based on the distribution of them and the whole idea it's not a bad idea and i i'm glad it exists but i'm not sure it's for me yeah i i mean if the bears win a super bowl i'd probably buy everything just so i you know it would take the right moment for me to to get into this type of card like this isn't something that i would yeah be prospecting or like buying mendoza cards or even any rookie bears player like i'd want their actual pack issued card from a set but like as far as the moment capturing which is what the product is built on i mean like yeah i'm looking at the site right now and some of these knicks top style cards i'm like these are sick like this just very specifically captures you know this championship moment so yeah it would take the bears winning a super bowl for me to get into tops now but may maybe in a year i'll have a huge tops now collection who knows five hundred and eighteen thousand five hundred dollars is what the curry night night one of one psa ten sold for auto wow that's crazy and i think when those sales are gonna continue to drive yeah the triple auto too that never like surfaced still right and that's mhmm yeah and i mean it is it they're gonna be doing more and more of these like i mean they saw they're they're making like the og and anobi one of one with like the piece from the net from like that tip in it's like that card is gonna go crazy like the or they did the quad or quintuple out of all five of the starters signed one card like yeah they're gonna keep manufacturing these big buzzy moment cards so they'll get me eventually once once there's a moment they'll get me yep you just need to find your moment yep alright couple more from rusty miller how do you budget manage finances so you're prepared when a grail appears that's a big question think this i feel like yeah i think it's episode about yeah i think it is i think the way i think about this is how i think about if i see cool cards that i like that i feel like there's some value in i am a fan of buying those cards even if they're not adjacent to my pc because it's almost like a a savings fund for when these cards do come available it's so much easier for me to turn those around and say okay i'm going to send these to consignment to pay for said grill than it is to actually reserve cash because who the hell knows when this stuff is popping up so the buying is such an important element in cards and i think a lot about buying and you make your money when you buy the card and so i try to all like i don't say to myself like oh i'm on a a buying hiatus because if i do on a buying hiatus to me i'm i'm losing money so i'm i'm i try to always be buying stuff and even if it's stuff that is not going to be long term in my collection i'm buying it because i i think the cards are cool and i know that if a a grail does pop up it can help me fund the grail so that's like over the last couple years that's been a big revelation for me like it's cool you get mail days you feel good about it especially if you found value and you just stash it away until that card pops up we don't know when those cards are gonna pop up so it's good to be prepared and i would rather be prepared with cards than try to hold some money that i never know when the card's gonna pop up so that's been my mindset yeah i have a very similar approach because it's like when those cards appear it's not gonna just be cash anyways it's gonna be me selling cards to get it so it's yeah and it all depends on what what the card is it's all situational like there are cards i thought i would never sell and then that cut or finite showed up and it just changed everything so i and everyone has an example probably something like that where you know when an opportunity presents itself yeah you just gotta be ready alright from steve's pc not a question but a compliment love your dynamic feels like listening to a conversation with a couple of good friends thanks steve pc appreciate the support steve you're you're you're our friend thanks for listening yes and then finally from bolt card crew he just says check out tomlinson's index on card ladder spiky so i think this tomlinson had a pretty big sale recently his black tops chrome refractor his two thousand one rookie card it's numbered out of a hundred and a psa nine just sold for sixty three hundred in april just two months ago it sold for forty three hundred and in last november it sold for twenty seven hundred so a nice little hundred and thirty percent gain in just what seven months eight months and then because his index the thing about the indexes on card ladder is like they're based on specific cards and so his index is looks like it's only his two thousand one tops stuff is even in here so his index spiking is a result of this specific card spiking and the reason for it i don't know i feel like lt is just a legend and a memorable player for a lot of people where you're thinking about all time football players you think about tomlinson i know when i got back into collecting he was one of the first names i thought about and then i was just like wait this guy's too expensive i'm gonna buy priestholtens and sean alexander instead and kinda should've just been buying lt i guess yeah i whenever i see a young running back sell for like thousands of dollars which hell i've participated in that as a jonathan taylor guy i always just think about what's ladanian tomlinson doing because he's he's kind of like the central force and i think he's got collector we know collectors he's got collectors but i don't know i feel like still there's a lot of room for his cards to grow because everyone has nice things to say about tomlinson he everyone's connected to tomlinson through fantasy he's got the accolades ever i mean he just he was it so i still think tomlinson's cards have a lot of room to grow that's just my speculation yeah absolutely all this football stuff to me is i mean that's why we are collecting it or part of the reason it's just feels like an opportunity it still feels undiscovered because it it always brings me back to when you see like a keith van horn card sell for twenty thousand dollars and you're like wait a minute that's more than like tomlinson's highest sale ever is twenty thousand dollars so yeah just on a comparing the name basis it's like you could have like one of the best cards of this all time football legend or you can have one of the best cards of a role player in the nba and they're the same price i'd rather have the football legend yes keith van horn is always the example by the way he is always the example i wonder what what is keith van horn's highest selling card these days need to just make sure that my reference pmg green is my guess oh my god so in march of this year his red pmg a psa nine which is it's a pop one very high grade oh my wow forty one thousand four hundred dollars those those set collectors they're talk about an upgrade hey i'm i'm tired of my i'm tired of my eight i'm gonna pay forty one k for the for the pop one nine but there is no way in january of there's a seven yeah in january of this year his green sold for ten k i'd rather have the green yeah at ten k than the you know psa six point five wow and that card has sold three times recently but so we get speaking of i mean we're sitting here talking about you know ninety seven another year keith van horn you know pmgs let's get into some sales shout out card ladder we have not shouted you out yet we all love the cardladder platform here's one for you pack i saw the sale twenty twelve silver tom brady psa ten thirty three thousand dollars pop twenty four this thing sold on fanatics for thirty three k so this card last sold in february for twenty six thousand four hundred and then before that in january of twenty five for ten thousand eight hundred so in about a year and a half the card has gone from ten thousand eight hundred to thirty three thousand that is a meteoric rise that i mean yeah legendary card legendary set it just makes sense like you know getting your hands on a gold of this card is become is probably very difficult to do for most collectors the black finite i mean we've never even seen that so it's like if you wanna collect brady from this set high grade of his prism silver makes sense but man that's a lot of money for pop twenty four though i mean that that i guess that tracks as far as the value i mean that's a rare card only twenty four gems it it's a lot of my it's not what i would be buying but i i i can see how it makes sense i mean keith van horn a nine selling for forty one thousand dollars so and people want high grades i'm not sure i i i i think it makes sense based on the set and brady and everything else i think what's most alarming to me is the demand to pay that much more in a short time frame yeah that too but like there's only twenty four of them like i don't know yeah this card will always matter but it just tell like what is the golds what are the golds worth right now you know i would love to see one of those hit auction that would be a lot of fun alright next one we've got alright twenty we got the twenty five ameka buka black finite really good rookie receiver just wanted to highlight this psa ten has sold practice jersey sold for eight thousand for four hundred dollars so i'd say i just wanted to highlight that like if you're out there trying to get fine eyes to some rookie positional guys this is about where we're at so he's in store for a big sophomore campaign but not a bad sale yeah these i mean i i love skill guys and i love collecting them but it's just amazing how fast that revolving door goes where i think of remember when like brian thomas junior the jags guy was like the next thing and malik nabors even or land mcconkey like all those guys for a second were the best project garrett wilson and their second year just maybe they don't have that massive breakout year and then their their prices fall off a cliff like i feel like ameka like had a good year yeah but if he you know he didn't even break a thousand yards or if doesn't break a thousand yards again it'll just be old news and this will be on discount cool card though next one they keep popping up maybe people are tired of owning them the twenty fifteen top scrum super fracture drew brees four thousand four hundred and forty dollars that just seems like an underwhelming amount for a drew brees super fracture but we've talked about how we don't love twenty fifteen tops chrome what's your reaction to this yeah that's a it's not my favorite year at all we have publicly shamed this year in fact but yeah i mean if you want to get in on the super fractured market this is a i suppose a good entry point and cool picture i like the all blacks that that's how i remember breeze so i do like the photo on this one okay we're gonna close it out with two positional or running backs to two sales we've got the mccaffrey twenty seventeen donneros optics the rookies insert gold vinyl one of one and a p s a nine selling for three thousand four hundred and thirty eight dollars what do you think about this sale that's cool i would want that if i was a mccaffrey collector i'm not like a insert guy but i feel like the rookies has such a heritage and legacy yeah like so that was on cards you know way back in the day so and and this doesn't scream in my face like that it's an insert like it still looks like a cool base card just with a little the rookies emblem so i think this is a sick card feels like mccaffrey hasn't been with the panthers in like decades doesn't it at this point mhmm yeah yeah it's getting weirder seeing him in panthers now and you see it weirder seeing him in forty niners yep alright final card this one i thought was sick we've got the twenty sixteen rookies and stars derrick henry crusades black one of one in a psa ten this sold for three thousand two hundred and forty bucks but crusades such a lineage legacy the blacks i don't know if i've ever really seen a black this is a rookie card on top of it just a sick card yeah this is incredible i've seen i'm pretty sure jason shout of chicago bears cards has a jay cutler black crusade one zero one that is just awesome so yeah this is definitely feels like a slept on set slept on card and of henry i mean it's a rookie this card this card rules alright shout out card ladder that is the market update alright we'll just do some quick collecting updates card call out get out of here any collecting updates on your end brett yeah i i bought a carson wentz card how about that okay there we go i bought i bought the twenty one carson wentz prism gold vinyl psa ten popped up on ebay i can't remember if i smashed men or get i think i gave an offer and got it and then i was at the i was at the zoo with my daughters this was a zoo buy they were eating icee's they wanted a treat so i loaded them up with sugar and we were in the the planes looking at ostriches and i saw the josh downs twenty four gold vinyl and an s g c nine five and bought it at the zoo so i bought that card because i have the gold and the black finite and so i now i have the tri finite of downs who's going into a big contract year and here's a question for you so josh downs on the card he's wearing jersey number jersey number one and the card is one of five so it is a jersey number but now downs wears two because sauce gardner got one so is it still a jersey number card even though he doesn't wear it anymore it's a jersey number card if the number matches the jersey number on the photo of that card it does it does it in my mind that's that's how it works that like a kobe number to eight out of ten but he's wearing twenty four to me like that's not a jersey number card but i guess it kinda is it's like the it's a secondary jersey number card yeah but that's a great pickup you know nothing better than a zubai dude just a little strolling looking at the looking at the monkeys and then smashing ben yeah yeah and i'll tell you what man i i just i'm having this energy around the gold vinyl out of prism it's just those cards kick ass man there's only five copies i just i love those cards so much so that those were my pickups did you get any i know you've been traveling did you have you bought anything i've bought some stuff but i don't have anything in hand so i will wait to talk about it but i did get outbid yesterday on a two thousand two finest refractor rod smith just one of the random ones that i need for my refractor set and i put in a twenty five dollar bid and then i was like alright i'll come back to this later when the auction's ending and just make sure i'm mega bidding this so i don't lose it and i thought twenty five would should just get it done these are like four dollar cards and i i just missed the end of the auction and got outbid someone else paid twenty six dollars for this rod smith card so if you're listening and that was you i will and you wanna make money i will buy that card from you immediately but yeah i had some other purchases too just in the wake of the the knicks championship not any knicks cards but just seeing like shout out danny modest card collection and congratulations to to his new york knicks but just seeing how happy knicks fans were and like the people who have collected knicks all the way through like how good of a moment that must feel like i was like i think i need more bears cards i think i need to stock it dude so made a couple emotional bears purchases in the wake of the knicks winning the championship dude i love that there must have been something in the air because i'm i've just been very at it those two gold vinyl purchases it's like it's like me talking to myself in the mirror it's like don't move off the plan and i'm i'm having more energy than ever before on my side colts collecting stuff so there must be something in there maybe we can thank the knicks for something for for our team collecting getting energized yeah i mean i know you hate them but there is something about seeing just a fan base that hasn't won in a long time win like exactly why i would be happy to see the bills win the super bowl like how cool of a moment that would be just as a sports fan you know so shout out to knicks i've got an idea for call i've got an idea for card call out we haven't talked about this but i got an idea alright alright so my it's here it's i want i want people to post their cards and tag the football card podcast of guys that were on your team for one season and you've got the card but they just one one season appearance i've already got mine in my i've i've talked about one i don't think i'll be posting carson wentz but there's plenty of other ones but i think it'd be fun to just to see that to see a array of guys on a team for one season and you have the card and you wanna remember it so post those cards and tag the football card podcast is this does the card have to represent them on the team from that season i i would i would prefer that i think that would be cool i just wanted to be yeah you know what inspired this and i don't think i can't remember exactly how many but i watched a clip of joe montana and this i think it was maybe his final season this kinda come from behind drive the team drive the chiefs all the way down the field in mile high and it was so sick and i was like man it's so weird seeing montana and chiefs stuff and i'd be i was i just want everyone to pull those weird moments and i think it'd be fun to see yeah a lot of those twenty twenty five prism guys that we were talking about maybe here's the opportunity like chris carter on the dolphins yeah let's see them that's a good one let's do it cards of players one year with the team alright post up on instagram tag us the football card pod on the story we will repost and thanks for listening we'll see you guys next week it was weird talking to pac looking at a black box but you overcome the elements when you have to thank you so much for supporting the football card podcast shout out card ladder for sponsoring the damn show we'll be back with another one next week take care talk to you soon
