The Football Card Podcast #47: The Million Dollar Drought and the Truth About “High-End” Football Cards
hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you are listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pac nicholson and with me as always is brett mister stacking slabs himself brett how are you doing i'm doing well excited to be here discussing football cards as always also been enjoying the rookie content of it all coming from my team so you know they make all of these guys larger than life when they're in their jerseys and their shorts with their helmets on so liking that content and then you know you're getting to know your guys a little bit more you're getting to understand what they like through if your team is promoting your players the right way so i've been enjoying that how how are you doing yeah it's every pick was a hit at this always at this beautiful moment in time where every draft pick was nailed in this most recent draft i'm good the weather's weather's nice here in central indiana lately spring has sprung the plants are growing big landscape guy lately i'm like year three in this house i feel like you know the system's finally in place like things that we planted a season ago two seasons ago are are settling in and yeah i'm just like washed dad now it's like fully what i've i've turned into i i love looking at birds on my bird feeder you know it's just like spring spring has sprung at the pack nicholson hq and and we're we're loving it the the lawn work is a little bit of a reprieve i was out there in the mix on mother's day my wife wanted to plant some flowers and i said well before you plant the flowers we gotta get the grass cut and do all those things it's a reprieve with when you got all the children you get a little break and it's my i i put on the sports card podcast i just throw it on and get caught up to speed on everything else so it was a return week we'll shout them out we had the the crossover back in the mix so shout out card ladder i even saw the precious metal gents pop back up on my feed so it was nice to get that content back at it so if sports card podcasts are seasonal i'll accept it give me all the content the football card podcast certainly isn't seasonal episode forty seven i believe we're on which is insane episode forty seven shout out to all the creators out there yeah shout out to creators on the same on the same schedule as the peonies you know blooming in the spring we got out of nowhere a crossover and zan back in the mix this is awesome it's funny i i mean long time stacking slabs listener obviously and it mowing soundtrack same with the crossover but there are like specific episodes or moments or stories that like all have flashbacks to like when i'm mowing my yard like i'm going around a tree and i'm like this is where i heard timmer's cards talk about getting a twenty thirteen select black you know like some grail like i can just randomly different people talking about card acquisitions will pop into my head as i'm mowing my lawn because it's just been the soundtrack for the last few years it's the best i know more about michael jordan cards than ever before because of chris mcgill i'll just do ninety minutes on a michael jordan one of one and i'll listen to all the ninety minutes and it's a thing it's like i i don't care what you're talking about if you have good content and it's about cards like i'm all for it so we're hoping to add to that ecosystem here with the football card podcast but i i actually before we dive into the numbers there was an interesting tweet that i feel like is on brand with what we like to talk about here and basketball guy oh adam gray the twenty seven guy on the twitter machine but the real twenty seven guy on the instagram machine big fan of adam he's got an awesome basketball card collection as a matter of fact adam when he was doing his podcast routinely when i got back into cards i i remember driving around trying to learn and absorb and i'd listen to a lot of adam's content on basketball cards but he put out a tweet two days ago as the time of this recording and he said update it has been a thousand sixty two days since the last time a football card sold for a million dollars or more since then sixty two cards have sold for a million including twenty eight baseball twenty five basketball five pokemon two magic two soccer how surprising is this to you so adam is great at storytelling pulling up this data and he put out this great post and as you can imagine there were some great replies but i know we've talked about this before but do you have any before we get into maybe some of the the the responses of this because i think it'll be entertaining any anything come to your brain right out of the gates when you see this question the two magic cards that's what i wanted to know what because i could think of the the ring card that post malone bought for like two million dollars mhmm one but i couldn't put my i couldn't think of what the other one would be and i looked it up and there was a private sale in april of twenty four for that the black lotus card which i'm i know what the black lotus card is or i know that that's a highly desired card in the magic community but that sold for three million dollars in a cgc ten wow so the those are your two magic million dollar sales the ring and the the lotus i mean yeah this continues i feel like we kinda did a good job covering this the last time you put this information out there like the the twenty eight baseball sales you know how many of them are vintage and then how many of them are shohei and judge i bet that's every i bet that's all and then basketball this same thing it's probably a ton of jordan kobe pmg you know football's just in that weird there's not a huge vintage football market and then the i feel like people got burned during the herbert burrow spending two million dollar era where quarterback prospects in football are no longer million dollar seen as million dollar cards we saw jaden top out at five hundred thousand during his like peak hype like that i don't even think other rookie black finites would go for five hundred k today so i'd i think football's just in a a weird spot compared to these other genres great observation there are some responses that i wanna call out one most notably is from the spinitron the spinitron machine look at of course he writes this book but i wanna i wanna just hit his points really quick and he calls out rob that's the old price and he said when he decides to retire in style which we know the kind of collection that he has and he's sitting on but here's spino's reasons he says the football catalog for brady peyton montana are not as vast as the basketball ones for kobe mj and curry for example only four brady pac pulled shield auto one of ones in the panini era only one brady shield auto in this decade football rookies outside of mahomes have not done too crazy lately and it's a and a couple of mahomes' biggest one of ones have changed hands for seven figures a few years ago and they're more locked down now brady kaboom green one of one would have made the list but benjamin got them locked down privately before the latest market run and probably in that seven hundred and fifty k range brady twenty thirteen prism black one of one sale was rumored at seven figure but private basketball being global sports and for the longest time also back in the early twenty tens basketball price is ten x versus football baseball for players of similar calibers more equalized no kobe six figure sale between january twenty twenty so it takes some time and then finally before i spent seven figures on ohtani there was no ohtani seven figure sales but even more market back then there were at least three cards of ohtani that are seven figures but the owners are not the sellers so i wanna get your reaction to what he put out there yet but this i wanna debunk this global thing because i'm so sick of hearing about it there is a leak of the international games this year twenty twenty six there's each year there's more international football games than ever before there is nine on the slate this year which minneapolis colts appear to be playing the commanders in week four in london so that'll be fun but the nfl is global game just because there's no global teams there are global collectors i get messages from them all of the time so that is one myth that i just i wanna stop because they're playing everywhere more than ever every year and there are global collectors out there so that's just one i wanted to call out but wanted to get your reaction john yeah i mean i think the the global of it all i'm just trying to picture is there anyone in the nfl that could walk around in china and get the reaction that like a kobe or lebron like no there's football doesn't have that same level of superstar that basketball does even nat like i bet anthony edwards gets more of a reaction in asia than like patrick mahomes would roman reigns gets more of a reaction if he was walking down the street in china than anybody playing football today and like why is the is the football because of because they're wearing helmets and they only play sixteen games and you're not seeing it like it might be it they're i don't think it's a like charisma thing necessarily i feel like there are players like that in the nfl but it it just doesn't i don't know i don't know but i don't think it's a problem i don't sit there and look at this and say like football i shouldn't be collecting football cards because none of them are selling for a million dollars agreed it's not a red flag to me it's i don't want it to be on that level if it gets that level then i can't buy any of the stuff that i want to it's kind of already getting there i'm getting priced out of things i don't like it so i don't know it is it is fascinating i wonder what the next million dollar card will be from football to finally end the drought but i don't know keep it going i'm fine with the drought are we do you think final one on this before we move into the actual episode do you think it is dependent on tom brady and a tom brady card to surface is it a maybe set thing and a card and a set thing to surface is it the potential of a player early doing unimaginable things throwing this out there raiders fans would love this but imagine fernando mendoza coming out of the gates being one of the best players in the league and taking the raiders to the super bowl and them winning this year like what would that do like which one of those thing three things or is it a combination of those three things for football cards to get into a level where there's not zero million dollar sales in a thousand but there's you know five to ten i mean we've seen manufacturers be able to create million dollar cards out of nowhere like we're living in it lebron triple logo man or the paul skeens debut patch auto like if topps came out with a topps super bowl set that had a one of one brady super bowl shield auto a manning one of like from a super bowl jersey like those are million dollar cards those would become million dollar cards even the i bet when the rookie debut patches like the mendoza one of one rookie debut patch card i don't know if it's gonna hit a million but i i believe that brand the brands will have the ability to manufacture some giant football cards in the near future so yeah i think that it is a combination of set and i mean yes if mendoza went on and won a super bowl his rookie year that would definitely go his cards would go crazy but before without that happening with like taking away on the field stuff i do think there's a way that a set could be or a card could be created that would break that seven figure threshold good observations i just yeah i i think that was i that caught my attention in my algorithm so shout out adam for helping us curate the first bit for episode forty seven but let's get into it episode forty seven would not be possible without our wonderful sponsors card ladder the only ones shout out card ladder shout out the crossover doing content so can't have enough card ladder in my universe always enjoy listening and spending time in the platform and there's no better feeling than when you get to add a new one to the collection so i like doing that yeah and shout out when you were talking about hoagcast and i'm always just blown away how he can talk for ninety minutes straight and it's very coherent and thought out and planned out i'm like wow this is an intelligent man he's thoughtful guy he's getting some card game on me because sometimes i'll be looking at the blank doc for football card pot i'm like what the hell am i gonna talk about why do people even listen to me ramble on here this is this makes no sense so shout out to football card listeners for sticking around for forty seven episodes no one in this hobby in my opinion does a better job of supporting what they buy and what they collect in a way that is informational and not just salesy and pushy i think chris mcgill does a really good job of educating the audience on why he's making the decisions he is is in this sports card hobby and why he believes in those decisions now he'll admit they might not be the best decisions down the road but he has evidence so i just i love that i love it when people share their process what they're thinking about we just need more we need more thoughtfulness in this this industry when we're talking about cards less debates less people complaining about other people and just like be thoughtful with why you're buying what you're buying and share it with all of us but people like that yep yeah he mentioned on you know i've just taken hoshcast content and repurposing it as football but when he talked about on one of his recent episodes of his collection just going through this massive transformation and he mentioned the i think it's the ship of thesis or thesus ship of thesus where it asked the question if you replace every part of a ship one by one until none of the original parts remain will it be the same ship and if not at what point does it become another ship and i was just on a walk with my dog listening to them i'm like oh my god this is just blowing my mind i'm thinking about my collection and how it's all the transformations it's gone through and i don't know it got gave me the urge do i sell everything and buy one random card do it you know is it time is it time to shake it up it's just always fun to you know we're all spend so much time thinking about our collection and what it is expressing and so then when you hear someone taking it to a a radical end or just just going through their own transformation it's it's always fascinating to hear how other people are navigating this hobby of ours shout out hos alright forty seven we've got three hall of famers we've got mel blount john lynch and duke slater who wore number forty seven you go first brett i feel like you got some notes about a player yeah i'm a i settled in on john lynch that was the first forty seven that came to my mind i'm sure and i'm sure and then i looked at your sheet and saw you had them listed i'm sure they're forty he's the first forty seven that comes to a lot of people's minds so he played from ninety three to two thousand on the bucks o four to o seven on the broncos and o eight on the pats which i totally forgot about the pats stint but i mean you could argue that john lynch the lynch pin was a key piece in the greatest defense of all time the championship bucks team you know what was crazy about that defense it was so good and it was so loaded and john lynch is one of the best better safeties of all times and it felt like he was almost like the guy that wasn't like recognized when you look at that slate of guys i also always find it interesting that you know dungy got fired and then gruden inherited the team and then won the super bowl but i don't know man i remember like talking to my buddies in in like school about that bucks defense and you know he played madden and be like oh you can't beat the bucks because of that defense and they were just so fun and lynch was a big piece of it he's a two time first team all pro two time second team all pro also what is fun about john lynch is that he is an executive now so he is just with he's just been in the kind of the hearts and minds of football fans forever with this unbelievable career into an executive position with the forty niners he won executive of the year in twenty nineteen and you know he's an interesting executive because the forty niners have had some swings and misses in the drafts lance for example but it always feels like the forty niners are a team that's ripe to win the super bowl every year and i would imagine john lynch and obviously he's got a great head coach and kyle shanahan are have got a great collaboration so i don't know i think about his ability to unite the the teams the defenses he played for together and i feel like he's probably taken that to the front office and he's just the mark of consistency so he also i think you know because of the position he played and area he played doesn't have a ton of great cards so i was just doing a scan of john lynch cards and i just landed on this one because this just reminded me of the super bowl so much just this is this is what he when i close my eyes this is what john lynch looks likes to me to me and this is his twenty twenty two prism finite it is just he's just running at the ball he's got the gloves on he was just such a badass this card sold in july eighteenth twenty twenty three for three hundred and five dollars so it's it's crazy like you go back and look three years ago it's like man this card was three hundred dollars then and this card maybe sat there because people are like i don't wanna collect post playing days cards but when you do the analysis on john lynch cards he doesn't have the inventory of peyton manning or tom brady there's not a lot of cards so i just think about that a lot and it's like am i sometimes when i pass on cards i'm like am i overthinking this so mhmm yeah john lynch hell of a player forty seven yeah i'm just looking at his highest selling cards of all time and not a ton of inventory like you said but he's got i mean it's all all the coolest cards are post playing dates he's got a two thousand star rubies that's pretty cool but some of these flawless patches of like the buccaneers having the sickest logo helps like a pirate ship and this like these patches just look so cool so shout out john lynch i did a little deep dive on mel blount he was number one on the av list for pro football on pro football reference of players to wear forty seven he is a hall of famer he is a former nfl defensive player of the year four time super bowl champion with the pittsburgh steelers at cornerback we love we love the secondary here on the football card podcast played fourteen years all with the steelers he had an interception in every single year that he played from age twenty two on until he was thirty six playing still getting picks so i love that and he's the reason for what's known as the mel blount rule which is having contact with the receiver within five yards before there was a time where he was just as i'm reading straight up harassing people at the line of scrimmage he was just so so much bigger stronger and faster than everyone that he pretty much would just blanket them immediately and eventually the nfl was like alright you gotta give him five yards so yeah shout out mel blount what a beast i love it i love it when individual players change rules yes there's a whole wikipedia page for specifically that and i was like alright let's go josh allen rule was on there i'm like what's the josh allen rule and that's what they're calling the the overtime change after yes lost to mahomes is there is there i feel like we've talked about this enough by the way let's just have the audience here well for those who are able to watch here the seventy five mel blount tops psa ten in september of last year it sold for thirty nine hundred dollars but he is doing what you're saying he's got his hands up uh-huh like thumb it off hands up he's like showing you he's like don't mess with me i am gonna push your ass back that's awesome what a what a card but josh allen yeah yeah that is a you remember where you were you couldn't believe it there were it just i felt that way and i'm sure you did with a lot of what we saw from the chicago bears in this run they had last year with just the uncanniness of so much of it but i have never well i don't know if i'll ever see anything like that chiefs in in bills game i still can't get over it i'm sure if you're a bills fan you can either yeah the thirteen seconds and let it just letting them kick a field goal is is brutal yeah and some some other rules the calvin johnson rule which is receiver must maintain possession of the football throughout the completion of the play that was a in a bears game and then that image is captured on his twenty eleven topps chrome card calvin johnson's yeah like atomic refractor year it's of the touchdown that wasn't a touchdown i think it was a great call i think the refs made the right call there there's the let's see bill belichick rule which i didn't realize so two defensive players one primary and one backup will have a radio device in their helmets allowing the head coach to communicate them with them through the radio headset identical to the radio device inside the helmet of the quarterback the proposal was defeated in previous years but was finally enacted in two thousand eight as a result of spygate so i'm like wait did belichick win spygate did he he got this rule pass that he he wanted after cheating like that's it that's interesting we're back to green we're having green dot conversations we're continuing the green dot thread yeah all about the green dots there's some some other interesting ones fran tarkenton rule a line judge was added as the sixth official to ensure that a back was indeed behind the line of scrimmage before throwing a forward pass enacted in nineteen sixty five as a response to tarkatan who frequently scrambled around in the backfield from one side or the other so it's just always funny to see you know what happens where then they have to adjust and make a rule we've got i believe i was scanning the mailbag i believe we have a rule change question we do that's a good little teaser oh emmett smith rule a player cannot remove his helmet while on the field of play except in the case of an obvious medical difficulty violation is treated as unsportsmanlike conduct enacted in ninety seven the dallas cowboy running back was the most high profile player who celebrated in this manner immediately after scoring a touchdown yeah he would take the helmet off right away yes that's this is great yes i would never have remembered that if you didn't just call that out yep and okay one more odell beckham junior rule any player who accumulates two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a game is automatically ejected the original draft of the proposed rule would have counted any two personal fouls towards ejection and drew its name from beckham who committed three personal fouls during a game in twenty fifteen i didn't know that that was never not a rule that's insane yeah okay one more ricky williams rule rule declared that hair could not be used to block part of the uniform from a tackler and therefore an opposing player could be tackled by his hair yeah enacted in two thousand three i remember that just like a fun fact as a kid where it's like that's part of the jersey hair's part of the jersey oh god yes we're taking a trip down memory lane by the way i feel like that should be an unwritten rule that you cannot tackle a guy by his hair that's just that's bush league yeah because like or it'd be a horse collar right like if you're grabbing in that area you can't can't do it one other forty seven i have to shout out because i don't like them chris conte bear safety just destroyer of worlds ruined ruined some had some bad bad bears moments i'm sure some of his cards don't you no oh yeah don't know okay i feel like is your mike vanderjak he's my vanderjak of just he's the one that blew the coverage on the aaron rodgers to randall cobb touchdown that like won the packers division last game of the season twenty thirteen he just i mean there's multiple people were at fault but he just was notorious for sometimes just getting burned he did pick off andrew luck though in luck's rookie year so he's got that going for him chris conti that son of a bitch son of a bitch alright should we get into some topics yeah let's go okay first question from drake's pc for each of you what is a set insert or parallel that you weren't all that interested in when you first discovered it but you came back around to later what changed to cause you to go back to it i remember resisting gold vinyl out of prism out of the gates because i just there was a disconnect where i was like man these aren't super fractures they look like super fractures but there's five copies but naturally over time i got pulled into them and they're some of my favorite cards and i think my appreciation for an aesthetic or a pattern to move from one manufacturer to another is something that i've just really taken note of i feel like that those are the things that are gonna withstand the test of time where they carry over and we've seen it from the nine different patterns and aesthetics from nineties all the way through today and i don't know i just think there's something there and i think that matters so i remember like being resistant at first but i think it just all it took for me to be like go for it and get one in the mail and when i got it i was like yeah i'm gonna start collecting these yeah that's a good one i put pmgs specifically reds and greens the ninety seven i just remember getting back into collecting searching like what is the most valuable michael jordan card and seeing the green pmg and i thought it was just the ugliest card i'd ever seen and like like seeing them like as like authentic altered or like they're low grade i'm just like what i don't i don't like these cards the green doesn't make sense like i don't think the green looks good with the bulls jersey or just any jersey really unless you're a green team but over the years have learned to i don't have any green or red pmgs but just you know have learned to appreciate them because of all the like you just learn the history of the card and the set and arena club and all the start to appreciate the condition and how they chip and all all the things that go into what make the green pmgs green and red pmgs so desired by collectors like i feel like i understand that more now than i did five six years ago if if stacking slabs the stacking slabs network were one of the biggest media companies in the universe and i was sitting at the helm and i had more money than god i would collect the green pmgs out of football i that would be like my focus because they radiate they're so different the checklist is awesome but you know you gotta pick and choose their spots but i like the reds but the the greens man they just hit you in the face every time i see one i'm just like goddamn that looks cool so but i get the resistance they're they're weird they are unconventional but i i think they're cool i love the etching i just mhmm love everything about those that set i think it's really neat right but yeah just that like at face value at that like if you don't know anything and you were looking at like a michael jordan green pmg versus like a michael jordan even just any michael jordan like auto card would have been like the autograph card is clearly the more like that's that looks better but yeah the the acquired knowledge of knowing why some of these sets and cards is that's the all the fun alright from next up from buy buy baby cards andy wants to know when i personally think of the term high end not every expensive card is truly high end some are simply low end cards with high market value when i think of high end i don't just think of the word expensive true high end to me means scarcity significance and price take the two thousand bowman paper tom brady that has a total graded population approaching sixteen thousand i've seen that card be called high end all the time there has to be a better term than just high end to describe cards like this what are some better examples to describe a card of this nature low end high value commodity grail luxury liquid blue chip common liquid icon some great names just shout out andy firing off some some names there but good question good good thought here i like this do you do you have a what's your response to andy's question here i said i mean i think it's all relative like what's high end for me isn't the same as what's high end for other people it's all relative based on budget like when you're when you're looking at it from a value standpoint but i think it kinda starts with what was high end like it does start with like what was high end upon the product's release like in twenty twelve wasn't like spectra the most like high end brand that panini put out or i think twenty thirteen thirteen yeah what is it twenty four yeah twenty thirteen thirteen but just in line of like the highest end product upon release you fast forward ten years is not is no longer the most valuable and so then high end becomes in regard to like the current cost and not the class of card it was upon production so that i don't know that i think there's just interesting dynamics going on there as far as terms too it just got me thinking of the term big card i've used it a lot people use it where they're like i'm getting a big card it's like what does a big card even mean like it just means it's expensive it means you bought an expensive card but i don't know maybe these are just big cards like maybe the brady bowman paper is just a big card it's not high end and it's not it's it's common but it's if it's if a card's ten thousand dollars that is like high end or like mhmm there is certain thresholds like what makes low end what i don't know it's all what do you what do you think mike i love this question so of course shout out andy very thoughtful with his questions this is something i think about a lot maybe maybe i'll say this first because as this is coming to me as we're talking through this i'll say this to you directly andy andy you have to consider this a majority of the people aren't nerds like us in our categories where we're spending so much an ungodly amount of time and i've seen the one of ones you've been picking up man no one knows these cards even exist but you're finding them so the level of maturity and sophistication when it comes to knowledge that you have of the nineties lane is unmatched and i think that needs to be recognized especially when you're thinking about your thoughts and opinions on you think about collecting with the masses the masses are always going to be very generic and mainstream so i think about it this way it's like like i'm like how is how are how is like imagine dragons like like selling out arenas and how are they like number one and have all these hits like they're again this opinion their music is terrible but it's the masses so you have to have these things where peep majority of people just buy into like story buy into narrative buy into whatever is pushed on your face or shoved in your face and it's easy when you have all of these cards like the brady which there's tons of copies and it's easy to storytell on this card it's easy to gain access to these cards so to me the it is it is silly i i i feel the same friction when people call certain cards high end but i feel to me they're more like institutional cards like these are the institutional cards that are easy to kind of build the framework for what is possible with sports cards but it is on us the nerdy collectors who are like not buying what the industry is selling as the high end card and we are willing to go like a hundred layers deeper because we really enjoy doing that work and forming our own opinion that's kinda how i absorb this the world needs fast food it's is this for a reason the masses need fed yeah that's that's that's a great observation and take there i think the yeah i'm just looking at andy's page now some of these one on ones are crazy that like to your point didn't know they exist but like i wanna i wanna just one thing about andy i just wanna say like andy i i wish more collectors give andy a little props i wish more collectors operated like andy andy is very thoughtful he is got one of the best nineties collections known to mankind he is very transparent he participates in shows and content like this he shares other people's cards like if you are asking yourselves questions on like am i doing this right just like go look at what andy's doing like there aren't a lot of people who have collections like andy's who are this out in the open and sharing and talking and forming their opinion so just give andy some kudos i wish more people in football cards and just cards in general operated like andy does yeah but like now that i'm thinking about it okay eighty six fleer jordan psa ten that's not a high end card because it's a common base card that came out of a five cent pack we could we could go we could we could be nuanced we could we could go down the we could spend the next two weeks going through this john i know i'm just i mean just seeing like he's saying that the scarcity significance and price are all factors which i agree but like yeah i don't know i don't know this is we need to go into the what was it not the kaboom room which we're gonna go in the kaboom room later we are but what was what did drake say drake said once he was like pondering or thinking or something and i was like oh i'd i'd like to just be at a cigar lounge like pondering with drake and get andy in there just we need a ponder room where we're just sitting christian ponder christian ponder wow what what a poll vikings legend who's a better quarterback christian ponder or jj mccarthy sorry vikings fans didn't christian ponder start for a couple years at least he did win big in the lottery with his wife i think they're still married oh yeah shout out sam ponder okay he started ten games in twenty eleven he started sixteen games in twenty twelve and the vikings went ten and six that's pretty good that's the vikings shout out vikings fans like the vikings are always good and then they just don't win in the playoffs or win the super bowl but like the vikings are always there and if you see the charts of like best winning percentages in the super bowl era and like how many super bowls they've won the vikings are always their their winning percentage is great they've always they're always like kinda contending if you think about it like through every era they've had the moss years they were good they were sick with the moss's rookie year and then culpepper was good like into adrian peterson they're always making noise but yeah shout out minnesota fans i wish you weren't in the nfc north then i'd maybe root for you i like kod i think he's a solid coach yeah alright next up from cars and cardio what has been your favorite rule change rule change made recently in the nfl this is i love thank you for bringing this question up it just aligns perfectly with the theme and i'm going to say my favorite is the dynamic kickoff and i'm gonna go against the grain here go against the president of the united states who calls the dynamic cook kickoff sissy football and come with some cold hard facts so predynamic football or kickoff twenty one point eight percent return rate which prompted the change it increased to thirty three percent in twenty twenty four and then twenty twenty five seventy percent so i don't know what's sissy about that because you get to see the guys return it and i actually enjoy it because we are getting to this mode where everyone was just kicking it out of the back of the end zone i will bring dave tops quote back up which was one of my favorite quotes ever said here on the football card podcast but he's the chief special teams coordinator he had a quote back to the president he has no idea what's going on he doesn't even know what he's looking at so take that for what it's worse worth and i hope he hears it so when you can get a rule change that transcends football and you have presidents arguing about it to me that's i like the excitement around the debate but yeah dynamic kickoff is certainly mine yeah that i mean i couldn't think of anything besides that as far as rule changes but us going down the rabbit hole earlier i think the josh allen rule of where overtime where everyone gets a possession in the playoffs i think that's great you need that i want that i don't want the the worst was and i can't believe we ever like watch football this way where you could win the coin toss and kick a field and win the game cake in the nuts dude cake in the nuts when that happened to you nothing was worse than losing a coin flip and then getting a field goal scored on you and it was over yeah the coin the a coin toss should never have that much weight in a in a football game and the coin toss the coin toss had way too much power for you you remember the era we talk about this era often when the passing stats were out of control a a time in this league where you had manning brady breeze rivers roethlisberger eli manning all of these guys dude they could get in field goal range in like two fucking plays like that's that's all if you had one of those guys and you went to overtime and you got the ball first the game was over yeah that especially now well now you can get into a field goal in literally a play you can get yes because you used to back in my day you started to drive at the twenty that's where you now they're start i feel like if you start at the thirty five that's not good oh so are we bringing the dynamic kickoff rule into overtime here and talking about the nuance is it okay though because you get a chance yeah it's i feel like in overtime they should lose dynamic kickoff so how are we how are we getting the ball there yeah no no no because if like alright in the day when a field goal could just win it in overtime on a first possession you should have to start really far back you can't have the dynamic rule where you're starting at your own four yard line and you get own five you gotta start dude well that that i feel like that get that that is one observation i've made over the last couple years if you start at like the five or under i feel like the defense has the same advantage that the offense had in that era where you could just throw the ball down the field and you know be in field goal range it just it it's almost impossible to get out of that zone offensively i don't care who you have on your team yeah yeah this is good this has me thinking of all sorts of different proposed rule changes and how about they always float this and it's probably gonna happen in our lifetime where instead of an onside kick you have to like convert a fourth and fifteen or something have you heard that where they no but i like i i i'm i'm i wanna hear more i don't know though like i i like the onside kick you gotta get the onside kick but the onside kick's so hard to get it that's the the onside kick is you're going as a football fan and your team has to onside kick it you're going into the play essentially it's like man it's like it's not a lotto ticket it's not that but you essentially it's gonna take a miracle essentially for that to land your way so i kinda like the four fourth and fifteen of it all that it'd be scary though if you had to defend that i know and i don't know to me it's like if you are the team that's winning and you've put yourself into like getting up two scores late in the fourth quarter i'd just be so pissed if it's like you give up a touchdown and then like they're feel like then they just get another fifteen yard completion they get the ball again it's like what and because also like could you just go for an onside kick anytime you want like if you score a touchdown in the first quarter it's like alright we're this defense can't stop us we're going for an onside kick right here i can get fifteen yards to colston loveland in my sleep let's go maybe i'm maybe i'm jaded by the onside kick based on what the saints did to oh my team in the super bowl i'm riding high off a successful bears onside kick against the packers so that's just get romeo gobbs back there he can't catch it this is why these owners get paid billions of dollars to make these sorts of decisions yeah i like thinking of the owners listening to the football card pod for their ideas which owner do you think you know maybe i'd like to think you know carly ursea gordon is maybe you know on her drive to the facility been like yeah i'll check out the football card pod and listen to us for a couple minutes yeah maybe we should we'll start tagging carly in post next year next year is the year when the draft combine let's get a billboard downtown it's like not listening to the football card podcast you're falling behind hey i i'm saving now for that moment yeah let's do it okay final question this was a late ad from timmer's cards in honor of episode forty seven worn by my gm john lynch who are some of your favorite gms in your team's history and their best picks and how about some of the worst mine's easy bill polian i mean i could just every colts player that is a legend he drafted manning marvin reggie the list goes on i mean it just goes on forever so bill pullian one of the i got into a great discussion about pauline being brought in and the rumor and innuendo about how it was league mandated that he got placed in the colds because jim ersays on thin ice was at a dinner discussion and we got into the weeds on all this but bill pauline just go look him up look up his track record it's insane worst easily ryan gregson just completely ruined the career of andrew luck by not giving him any protection he was absolute hot garbage so yeah i i don't have the vitriol towards chris ballard that i do towards ryan gregson ryan gregson was trash what about you yeah i've been around for like four gm king bears ryan poles is probably my favorite because of recency bias and i like this team now and he's got them cooking and before that they're you know we're random good teams but like shout out phil emery he was there for a while but as i was looking back through some different gms ryan pace i forgot how bad ryan pace was listen to this three peat that ryan pace put together hiring john fox drafting kevin white and then the next year trading up to draft trubisky it's just it it was that was a terrible terrible era as a as a bears fan to watch your team get john fox and then kevin white and then mitch trubisky as your as your nucleus for a team like these are the three people that going forward are gonna make my team a contender so you had to suffer through those times to get where you're at today yeah i just hope the good times last that's all just have another good season guys just win ten games again that would be awesome back to back good seasons that i haven't seen in since two thousand five that i have a topic that i think can transition us into the team talk for a for a a minute but shout out everyone in the mailbag this discussion got brought up about we're seeing the content on like strength of schedule the hardest you know strength of schedule and it's like what does that mean you know what what does that mean like does it even like your thought about the bears tonight you hoping they're good does that even matter the in the next year what their record was in the previous year because we see every year we see the league just flip upside down sure the good teams are the core good teams are always good but it seems like good teams are bad the next year and bad teams are good the next year so like jordan schultz put out a like strength of schedule based on i think he did vegas odds for this year which maybe gives a more accurate depiction of it but i don't know like people fans of teams parading around saying that like oh we've got the easiest schedule going into the year like i i just don't buy it because there's so much parody in this league yeah i put no weight into that because there's like random i mean and the whole oh now you have to play a first place schedule i also don't think that that's that big of a deal it's like three extra games a year or not three extra games three games a year where you're playing another division winner or whatever your standing was in the division but there are years where like last year the bears were playing like a last place schedule but like the forty niners had finished last year before because of injuries and so when the bears played the niners it's like the bears that's not a last place team that they're playing anymore it's just they had a down year and now they're play there's so much parity like you said it i don't put any weight into that it's just we need a talking point in this long off season so the i mean even just the schedule delay the announcement is killing me by the time this goes out yes finally just the slow drip of this game's announced and this game and what about what do we think are the bears gonna play in seattle week one like i don't know it's just just give me the schedule give me that game give me that game that's a game i wanna watch yeah bears in seattle opening night yes sign me up as a no dog in the race that is a game i will be excited to watch yeah we'll we'll see i yeah by the time this is out those questions will will be answered and you'll you gotta figure out where you're traveling don't the colts have a london game i saw that get announced do i i i'm not sure london is in the cards but i i would that would be fun i think i might need to be quick trip but we'll we'll see yeah alright great questions everybody thank you quick nfl check-in no real team talk but a couple updates on the one the fans the football card podcast pick'em i believe we have a strong commissioner candidate he banes cards forty one sent a dm with some ideas for how a pick'em league could run what he's done in the past as far as running pick'em leagues for his work and offering his services to run the pick'em league for us so i think we might have to go with baines cards and get this football card podcast pick them league set up for the season which i think would be a ton of fun but then we gotta get into are we wagering is it just for the love of the game do we get some cash involved do we get cards involved do you have to put up a card to enter into the pick them league and then the winner just gets a bounty of cards we got there's possibilities out here we we will decide that we we have not talked about any of this off air i will say i love the strategy of bang cards forty one who dm'd me too mhmm and this guy wants the job he wants the job let let's let's do this because before we we get i i love the experience if anybody else wants a crack at this you got one week one week one week to submit to submit your interest in in running this but there is a front runner right now i would love to see a little competition but that that let's spend on that and you and i can talk about we got time but but it'd be fun to crown yeah kind of the the commission early yeah and yeah just was putting this resume out there as a a signal to all others listening that there's someone in the ring who's got a strong profile for this and if you wanna compete now's your chance get your get your application in this week to be the football card podcast pick them commissioner one of the highest honors ever bestowed upon a football card pod listener same level as nfl man of the year it's kinda the same category agreed oh yeah another update so brandon i love this sports card struggles yes brandon rules with an a couple updates one come with me the godzilla soundtrack diddy slash jimmy page song has always been locked out of streaming services because of multiple licensing issues it wasn't just recently due to diddy that was my jam as well and the only way to hear the original is from the cd or youtube music video but there is a crackpot version on spotify so shout out the come with me update and then two gaston is too bulky to be able to throw a football he'd have to be a middle linebacker or a edge rusher and bonus thought can you imagine how exciting mulan would be as a kick returner gaston as a mike linebacker nailed that yeah he's gaston's not a qb gaston needs to be in the middle of a defense patrolling i like i spot on analysis and it's good because i'm currently very in the middle of i started a doc of my disney character bigboard where i'm just starting to you know put some names on put some possible positions and i'm really liking how this is shaping up but gaston yeah and at six foot foot you know gaston's not drew brees out here gaston is a a middle linebacker terrorizing the field i'm tickled inside by the mulan as a kick returner i'm also thinking about an edge a good edge rusher might be you need someone who's just insane and vicious i'm thinking i don't know i'm maybe sid from toy story or or scar would be a good edge rusher scar off the edge is don't turn your back on me caleb wow getting yeah getting the tackle turned around and then just spins off them i i got them thinking i'm like because disney you know disney can be broad where disney has star wars stuff now yep and like mandalorian because yep boba fett at free safety unstoppable the bounty hunter the bounty hunter how good of a nickname is that for someone in the secondary i mean somewhat whoever the best safety is this year in nfl we just gotta start calling him the bounty hunter greedo would probably be the worst safety greedo would yeah no who shot first greedo who who pushed off who passed interfered first we need a football card podcast cantina scene yes and a couple other just who are climbing the big board mister incredible obviously oh wow yeah triton father of ariel i mean have you seen the build on that guy like that guy can move some bodies around i don't know if him having you know a fin and flippers is gonna be a deterrent on this this field where they're playing but you know home games home games in the grotto i think triton is a force i can't get off jafar as a qb and like he's just too like he's jaden daniels type too think like tall slender he might be a little injury prone but i feel like jafar is a sub cerebral villain who would just carve up a defense and is he allowed to have the staff on the field i don't know because that gets into then i did some research and i was reading a ranker list of the fifty most powerful animated disney characters and the genie with his wishing capabilities was number one and i'm like yeah wow like the genie can become anything that giant dark jafar genie too like if you put them on the same team can you harness those powers so i think the staff is part i think like core core identity like that's a that's a piece of his core identity i think that that is included i think elsa with her powers you get the the frozen powers i think that she could be a sneaky you know mid round pick and where else who else do i have oh yeah the three good fairies is that one pick you get three little fairies with all of that they're a package deal package deal yeah dude i'm thinking about l set i'm thinking about l set running back can you imagine just her like freezing the field behind her she would be unstoppable unstoppable one one more one more that i just wanna i'm thinking about nose tackle like vince wolford type mhmm have you seen wrecking ralph no dude wreck and ralph you should check dude wreck and ralph is just a hidden gem great if you like video games they're bringing all the characters from video games in the movie it's great but he he would be a great nose tag yeah i mean i'm looking at the build he's he'd be great up there one other randall from monsters inc at either like cornerback like imagine you're you're throwing a receiver that look wide open and then he you know flashes open picked picked off he he's twitchy he could he could move but then you need someone on defense like if you if you've got randall on the opposing team you need like an ursula squirt an ink on him so that you can see when he's invisible that would have to be part of the game plan is getting getting stuff on randall so you could see him on the field oh this is this is awesome so we'll get to the draft eventually but just putting putting some ideas out there i'm glad the momentum continued around this topic momentum would continue oh and alex alex monig had a great call out on i think he left a comment on the video where he said the beast at edge would destroy beast from beating the beast would be he's he's a first rounder maybe top of the big board the beast james p sullivan is way up there of course oh yeah cardboard caleb said stitch is running back too in any disney themed nfl lineup stitch is the spell bag yeah and then oh northwoods card collector genie he's a plug and play kinda guy yep and then goats and gronk had a nice little list of prince charming at quarterback gaston at running back tarzan at receiver hercules at tight end holy a lot of bro there yeah a lot of bros a lot of a lot of chads up in that in that backfield prince charming handing off to gaston while hercules is blocking that's a that's a big t offense i don't know what the cheer the cheerleaders would be so distracted during the game yeah and then this defensive tackle solely edge beast quasimodo at linebacker i think quasimodo's a liability out there i don't think quasimodo's you can't cover dude i'm picking jafar is going right for kwazimoto every play he's just just shallow crossers in front of moto eating them alive dude dude the hunchback is just my that came out when my sister was like a little kid and i just remember being like i'm kinda scared by this what's she like yeah cool and like the weird like preacher guy in that movie bizarre movie weird movie yeah there's this the draft will come we'll figure out maybe it's the actually next week is gonna be the season four finale oh wow so but then episode fifty is right around the corner we've got we'll we'll do this before football season we'll have to do our just a quick the disney draft sales yeah sales let's do it alright let's jump into some sales we are entering the kaboom room right out of the gates with the twenty eighteen saquon barkley rookie gold kaboom and a b g s nine five sold on the ebay machine via best offer for fifteen thousand five hundred dollars this card is down five k from august twenty twenty four should we be concerned as members in the kaboom room nope kabooms are fine kabooms are fine nothing to worry about here nothing to see here this is a sick card kabooms are sick but yeah i think it just goes to show the quick highs and lows that come with skill players in this day and age like saquon was top of the world and now yeah it's just it's hard to main maintain that hype you have kind of a down year and people are so quick to forget but this is a sick card it is we move over bad scan sick card two thousand and two finest manning gold refractor out of twenty five bgs nine five sold via best offer for ten thousand dollars the last sale of this i think was eleven k which was the psa ten i it just felt like for so long we didn't see these and now we're starting to see them pop up so whenever it's just like whenever you start to see these sales repeatedly you wonder if a card out of twenty five can sustain that i don't know but this card is an awesome awesome manning card i love the blue face mask yeah on the card as well but yeah what do what do you think about this big sale because didn't his psa ten sell for like ten k i think it was eleven last year eleven k yeah so a nine five that's yeah it's this set's getting expensive i don't i don't like it it's it's because we probably keep talking about it out here we're not helping no o seven bowman chrome patrick willis super factor one of one rookie in a psa nine selling on ebay via psa via best offer for nine thousand five hundred dollars dude i i know ninety five hundred dollars isn't a small small small amount of money but when i saw this card and how absolutely stunning this is and then i looked at the subject was the best linebacker playing when he was playing could be argued ray lewis back and forth but he a hall of famer dude this card has everything to me it's like this if you're holding this card for a long time i think you're gonna be doing just fine that card is sick and i've fully done a one eighty on old psa labels feel like i used to just always want a new psa label but i'm starting to love and appreciate the old label a little bit more and just knowing like the serial this is what what the nine millionth card graded like in that range and to know like the certs are at like a hundred and sixty million now it's just that's a cool cool label cool piece of history shout out patrick willis hall of famer seven time pro bowler five time first team all pro in a eight year career this this career i'm looking at it it reminds me of daytona by pusha t seven song album all hits dude daytona ruled man daytona is so good and how long ago was daytona it feels like yesterday twenty eighteen probably good lord it was during the like because like kanye produced all those albums like yay and kids see ghosts and daytona and the nas album and tiana taylor album i like kids see ghosts kids see ghosts is sick there's yeah i think they're all seven songs too all those albums are just which i like that i like just short sweet concise no not eps albums of seven songs you know mhmm yes yeah i'm up on daytona right after this same i'm right i'm writing it down it's probably been a few years since i've listened to that alright we got your guy here i love the no tops chrome on this label the listing just says luther burton the third superfractor in lowercase one of one we're not even we don't even need to put tops chrome and it didn't matter because this thing sold via best offer for five thousand five hundred dollars it is a rookie card tops chrome super fractor rookie this is right up your alley what do you gotta say about it yeah awesome card i would love to own that card expensive card for a second round receiver who's like yeah he showed awesome flashes his first year but even seeing i think we had on a couple episodes ago that garrett wilson prism finite one zero one that was for three or four yeah something like that where he's a bonafide number one wilson is a stud number one receiver and so for his best card to go almost for half the price of burdens i think this is just the perfect combo of there is a lot of hype around this young bears offense combined with the topps chrome super factor hype of it all dj moore leaving people think burden's gonna step into this you know wide receiver two role and really emerge i hope so but yeah that's a lot of money for like not a number one stud type like i i think he could get there but like at this point that's just a lot of money for like a i hope this works out type of player as you age in the hobby it's it you learn when there's thousands of dollars involved it's not good to spend your money on i hope this it can have the i hope this works out along with the spending of thou thousands if you bought this card though reach out to me tell it to them for two thousand three thousand dollar less than you bought it for let's let's talk about it this is what i i love this this sick this fred taylor super factor out of twenty five top scrum auto one of one three thousand three hundred and fifty dollars i don't i'm not sure there's a player like fred taylor who's got a more passionate collector base for a player that's not in the hall of fame jack he's the jack he is the jaguars when i think of fred the jaguars i think of fred taylor and his collector base is just incredible so fixed price i would imagine this went to a fred taylor collector i hope so but just awesome card yeah tops chrome i'm loving tops chrome they like the nfl legends that they have in the sets are cool like the on card autos are cool and then i love the variation cards like the i haven't bought any they're not for me but i like that all the players have a variation where it's their helmets off and they're it's like more of a close-up shot like to me that's just so cool to have a distinct difference in the variation in the base instead of panini's like ball in left hand slightly slightly turned twelve degrees to the right towel up towel down catching ball running with ball like having just a full like the variations all have helmets off and look like this and i know like i think don russ had done that in the past or they had wow this was didn't don russ do like the covid masks in like twenty yeah in twenty twenty one like all the variations are like helmets off and they have masks on which is crazy that's a what a moment in time that'd be a fun set to for someone to collect it would i will say this i've not bought any of these twenty five tops chrome but my my mood might change if the design we are on twenty twenty six tops chrome wwe and it is one of my favorite wrestling products of all time the design the photography the geometric breakers delight configuration it is just got it going on so i'm hoping that football cards inherits that design because it is just it's perfect so oh i just did a quick it is phenomenal it's i can't this isn't a wrestling card podcast but i can't talk about how much i love it i'm dude i am i'm gonna tell everyone i got no updates buying on the football card front it's because i've just been sucked into the wwe tubs chrome universe and it's just awesome let's go alright we got how about this sale twenty one tampa tom brady gold prism psa eight is sold via auction for twenty eight thousand two hundred dollars and i i was like i gotta look at this so there's been two previous sales in november of twenty three a psa seven sold for twenty two thirty two hundred in twenty two a nine sold for seventy two hundred and now the third sale year years later twenty eight grand for this card that's crazy i mean that's just i guess what it is for a gold prism of i feel like mahomes is probably up there like his twenty one prism gold maybe not probably not that much super bowl year here super bowl year well year after because he's in twenty twenty on the bucks like that and that was his first year with the didn't he win in his first year with the bucks yeah he won the covid year i which yeah that's a whole other people give braun shit for the bubble ring but it's like these nfl players in the playoffs they're playing with like a thousand people in the stands remember it was like tiny sections of fans were allowed into these games but no one no one calls tom's bucks ring a a bubble ring mickey mouse ring twenty twenty one super bowl chiefs okay but that was his first like he is in twenty twenty prism on the bucks correct but that wasn't that his first year with the bucks yes yeah he won the super bowl in his second year with the bucks i think he won it in his first year didn't he are you are you looking at the stats oh no yeah he won it in his first year with the bucks the twenty twenty season the super happened god okay you're you're accurate so a lot of bucks chatter on here today a lot bucks like back of this card the back of this card i bet talks about the super bowl win you're right yes you're right so i'm i'm horrible at i with football it's something i have like a block in my brain where it's like the season and then the super bowl is always like the next year and it's so confusing for me yes that and the nba with every season being two years oh like ninety six ninety seven like and it's yeah i don't like it but you you gotta you gotta let's you got a finals pick who who you like thunder thunder is so good i think the thunder is so good they haven't lost yet yeah they're they're just so good they have everybody they're they're playing well together we don't bring up tom brady every week but we're gonna do a double dose because i know all the brady fiends are like why aren't these guys talking about the goat here's another one twenty twelve prism red die cut b g s nine five dude this is just outstanding this is a pop nine this card sold for thirteen thousand two hundred dollars which is double the price of the the previous high which was sixty six hundred dollars so we're seeing and i think this makes sense to me because twenty twelve the parallel structure is very very small not a lot of cards so i think we're beginning to see collectors realize that and pick up some of these seeds some of these cards yeah these i'm just not a die cut guy so these have never been one of my favorites but the red with the patriots this is a very this one is a very cool looking card alright final card we've talked about this card enough but i'm just sick of talking or talking about it because we see it all the time the john elway pmg red at a one fifty psa seven sold for sixty three hundred dollars and the reason why i brought this card up because i was like how many times is this card sold so the seven has sold since twenty one nineteen times this this card has sold wow yeah who's that's too many it's too many can't sell that much what is this the highest sale ever of it though what's this the highest sale ever no no the highest sale ever is nine thousand in september of twenty five yeah so this is a good learning tool i think for peep like when a card sells twenty times in a four year span i feel like that limits its ability to really take off or jump like if this card hadn't sold for a few years and then it pops up i think it would have gone higher than sixty three hundred dollars but i mean a sick looking card in the no doubt no doubt i i like it how the football is not shown on this card and you just got his hand flicking forward i think it's a very good looking card but way too many sales for me yeah i hate an nba sticker too we've talked about that but no thank you i don't need it don't need someone to grade my graded card alright let's see collecting updates what are current collecting projects that you're focusing your resources on any updates on your end brett i got nothing but the the the well has been dry for me i i've not been able to find anything so it was crazy it was like once chrome came out it was like all of the prism stuff just evaporated i'm like that's how it feels in my world i had a couple that i i first i wrote down nothing but then i won an auction overnight last night while i was sleeping congrats my bid did the work so i won a twenty twenty five panini mosaic black one of one deandre swift because i now have the swift the caleb and the dj moore twenty twenty five mosaic black one on ones very pumped to have three of those and then i won the two thousand ten tops chrome gold refractor map forte in a psa eight point five that is a card that i've been looking for for years i bought one raw i think at the start of the football card pod and it never showed up yes don't know where it went probably ended up with cards and then so when this eight point five popped up i've binned that and it arrived yesterday so yeah couple couple little pickups but yeah the deandre swift black one zero one i just put in because it ended at like three am eastern like what are you doing like not happening i just put in my bid and went to bed and woke up and i'd won i was like wow that that felt responsible and the way it should have gone so i as you as you as you get older putting the bid in in advance i feel like it becomes more and more okay because life is too hectic and we need our sleep you know yeah need the sleep alright let's do a quick card call out and we'll get out of here we asked to see linebackers last week saw some great linebackers and this week let's go nineties football cards oh let's open
