The Football Card Podcast #38: Free Agency Frenzy, Prizm Year Rankings, and the Million-Dollar Football Card Debate
hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it it's the fastest growing the longest running football card podcast in the world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pac nicholson and with me as always is brett mister stacking slaps himself brett how are doing i'm well it looks like gotham city here in indianapolis right now with the rainfall it's completely dark at the time of recording here also i just will say man and i would know we're gonna get to it we're gonna talk about this a lot but man this like free agency week here opening it up it's just a reminder for how much i truly love the nfl it is like glued to your phone all the signings all the deals all the maneuvering like this is the most entertaining league in sports it everything is such a big deal we gotta just say this because right bev right out of the gates like we were chopping it up before we hit record and we were like debriefing on the max crosby of it all and which is probably an entire episode in and of itself and i made mention to you dude if trey hendrickson goes to the ravens someone needs to investigate this and like literally right after i stopped saying that you looked down at your phone and you go hey breaking news from shafter for hendrickson the ravens so yeah it's wild man i'm sure you've been following along happy free agency to you but yeah what do you make all this nfl rules football's awesome i mean like we're here in march and it feels like the season is in full swing the crosby hendrickson stuff yeah it's this literally happened three minutes ago so by the time this airs friday maybe crosby has his new team maybe hendrickson backs out of the ravens deal by friday who knows love the old news but no yeah it's exciting it's fun it's the constant like going back and forth of you want your team to make the big splash but when they don't make the big splash then you're just you have to quickly pivot into the coke cabinet of like nope this is the right move it's better to add depth and build in the draft and and then your team gets someone you're like yes hell yeah so it's fun i don't know what it all means because it's same thing as the draft i feel like in the coming months every signing is gonna look and feel awesome every draft pick feels awesome like every fifth rounder you're like that they i can't believe they got this guy in the fifth round what and then the season unfolds these guys don't pan out or they don't play or they get hurt so that's why you just gotta enjoy it in the off season while you can but your guy alec pierce he's coming back yes alec pierce is coming back i can record this episode brother is getting paid and i am just so thrilled about it i don't wanna get into the details and the criticism or the people that were are in love with this it's you know it's across the board emotions and feelings but what i do say what i do wanna say is that after this got done alec pierce went on mcafee and he just said i love indianapolis i wanna play ball here and dude i mean when you're when a when your guy says they love your city and they wanna be here you know reports came out that four other teams offered more money than the colts and pierce still came back that's that's when you like i loved alex pierce now i just like it like the the emotion is so strong and i just it's so exciting i was i i couldn't live with the scenario of watching a player each year progress and lead the league in yards per catch two years in a row and then get the opportunity this year being like the solidified number one and him walking away like i would have been absolutely devastated but i'm so pumped about that and i'll say this this is why free agency rules i think the main reason why free agency rules because if you are a fan of any other team other than the seattle seahawks you've been miserable since the since the season has been over with what could have been what should have been if this went that way if this injury didn't happen all these things but then like it's once this free agency starts going man the optimism is high mhmm you're just feeling it again it gets you sucked right back into it you're starting to figure out your team the draft's around the corner and man nfl could just it has a way based on its calendar structure to pick you up off the ground and get you pumped patch you on the butt and say let's do this and ultimately all of this just makes me wanna collect more football cards and that's what this is all about absolutely yeah seeing between alec the alec pierce signing and then pittman just knowing that pierce is gonna get this shot as like the true number one is cool and has to be exciting as a collector of his cards where it's like oh yeah like this is why you have been collecting his cards is for a moment like this so hope to see him break through i mean looking at the last three years five hundred yards to eight hundred yards to a thousand yards there's a clear trajectory going on i mean a nice twelve thirteen fourteen hundred yard season that would be awesome when you're the belle of the ball of free agency when you're the number one receiver regardless of what people think you're worth it's supply and demand you know like the people wanted this and my nightmare was i was gonna wake up or look at a push notification he was gonna there was gonna be a graphic of him in a patriots jersey and i was just like i'm gonna throw up all over the place if this happens and i know those pats tried really hard to give their their qb a deep threat like alec pearson that's a win in and of itself it's like you know we might not have been better than the patriots this season but at least we won this free agency battle here yep yep alright we'll get into a little more free agency talk and some of these questions from the listeners in a little bit but this is episode thirty eight number thirty eight and it wouldn't be possible without our wonderful friends over at cardladder shout out cardladder providing data insights to the entire hobby i've been talking a lot about this hobby the growth the record sales four hundred and eighty one million in february it's an infrastructure thing i think when you look at the infrastructure marketplaces that are forming those help support liquidity the exchange of cards but then another layer of that is data and insights and cardladder is bringing that so while cardladder is reporting on the four hundred and eighty one million in february online sales i believe cardladder is responsible for helping support that by giving buyers and sellers visibility into what is happening in real time so these are the types of people we wanna partner with here on the football card podcast industry leaders who are helping support the growth of not only the broader hobby but most specifically the football card market shout out cardlighter the only ones alright episode thirty eight there are only two nfl football hall of famers to ever wear thirty eight those two players arnie herber and cal hubbard now the second i saw those names i'm like oh yeah these are some vintage guys these i'm sure they served i'm sure that they have these incredible disney like career stories was not disappointed i'm a start with arnie herber arnie herber arnie arnold charles quote flash herber of course he's got the nickname flash these these old guys always have the good nicknames played in the nfl quarterback for thirteen seasons primarily with the packers from nineteen thirty to nineteen forty long story short he was a great passer led the league in passing yards and touchdowns three times becoming the first player to ever lead each category three times won four nfl championship games so herbert is this kind of packers legend inducted in the hall of fame in sixty six but the little nugget that i liked out of his story is and what makes again what makes these old guys have these movie script type stories so he's born in green bay first off oh man that's and there you there you go born in green bay packers fan from a young age starred at local green bay west high school in football and basketball so he's just the hometown kid goes and plays at wisconsin and then he leaves and goes to another school regis university but then they drop football after the nineteen twenty nine season so he's kinda in flux right so he goes back to green bay and he gets a job at the packers clubhouse as a handyman and then while he's working as a handyman coach charlie lambo gave him a tryout no way he makes the team the packers were at that point already like dominant in the nfl and they had a undefeated twelve o and one record and won the nfl title the year before he joins the roster so they're already awesome but he still makes the team and then he goes on to help and lead them to four more championships in that era so like come on the hometown green bay kid gets a job like he's on the rise then he's down on his luck he goes back home he gets a job at at lambo or i guess it wasn't lambo field yet because clearly lambo was there but what a what a story for old arnie herbert what a tale i looked up his highest selling card and it's the two thousand seven playoff national treasures cut auto you look at this card and the auto is just on a cutout of like old loose leaf paper which is awesome this card rules it has thirty eight on one side which is obviously our episode number and the position it says green bay packers football club and this card sold for fifty one hundred and thirty dollars in september of twenty twenty three but just it's just awesome i love this that's great they don't make paper like that anymore no the nice blue lines like do you think this paper smells like cigarettes oh there's a there's a musk to that paper there's no question another cap so cal hubbard he's the other thirty eight in the hall of fame and let's see he the the main thing i wanna call out with old cal he played in the nfl from twenty seven to thirty six kinda jumped around to a bunch of different teams bulk of his career with the packers kind of like a revolutionary linebacker but then after his football career he went on to become an umpire in the mlb which resulted hubbard is the only person to be enshrined in both the pro football hall of fame and the baseball hall of fame he's also in the college football hall of fame so cal hubbard in three hall of fames that's pretty sick you know it it feels like he he should be recognized as cal hall of fame hubbard right i mean yes he is the hall of fame he's the hall of famer's favorite hall of famer yep well and then oh yeah there was this one other nugget these stories from these old guys it's also like i don't know how much to ever believe because there's like the legendary story with bronco nagurski where he like breaks they used to play at wrigley field the bears bronco nagurski was this huge ukrainian fullback and he like scores a touchdown and then runs into the brick wall at wrigley and afterwards he comes to the sideline and says like that last like that last guy hit me real good or something like that like joke is he can run through a brick wall and whatever who knows if that's true but i say that because this is a story about cal hubbard where they say once while playing the chicago bears who had fullback bronco nagurski the bears prepared to punt hubbard went to halfback red grange and said i promise not to try to block the kick red but get out of my way so i can get a shot at nagurski grange glad to not block hubbard for once obliged cal tore through the line slammed into nagurski and bounced off rising slowly he turned to grange and said hey red don't do me any more favors which i'm like who knows if that'll happen who's who's making this up but shout out these older you know hall of fame legends i love reading into stories like this and thinking about the nfl when it was just like plumbers and electricians playing the game versus the the spectacle it is now not that i don't love the spectacle now but it's fun to look back and that's what we do here on the football card pod it is i was you know thirty eight there thirty eight is in not a very worn number there's not too many famous thirty eights in the modern era that come to mind feels very much like a special teams number which is my selection which maybe the end of the story is not great but when i saw thirty eight i instantly saw the blue colts thirty eight and thought of sergio brown now sergio brown was he follows this the the quentin nelson school and the riley leonard school of being on my favorite teams notre dame guys who become colts players sergio brown notre dame player become a colts player very safety but special team focused lot of plays getting the crowd fired up type of a guy i think maybe if you're trying to think of who is sergio brown there was a clip that went viral during the era that he played where after wins he would be in the locker room and he'd say give me two claps and a ric flair and he'd he'd he'd woo and that's just how the colts broke it down now i'm not gonna get into it because it is the football card podcast and it's not a crime and mystery podcast although if it was we tied crime and mystery to football and football cards i would listen to it because i love i can get in a rabbit hole of just sitting there and watching like interrogations in a police room like that's kinda my guilty pleasure but yeah sergio not so good story and there's you can go look it up it's some crime involving his mother and he might be waiting to be on trial just a nasty end of this but i i'm hopefully remember sergio in that two collabs in a ric flair but yeah not a good end of the story but dude i couldn't think of anyone else so sergio brown that is my selection maybe we do a collab with crime junkie there and then that's their new based podcast crime podcast maybe there's you know a football card crossover there and we investigate this yeah thirty eight was danielle manning was the only like the bear that came to my mind when i thought of thirty eight but looking up the highest av of any player to wear a thirty eight is actually a colt eugene daniel oh my gosh i cannot believe i didn't even think of eugene daniels this is like me listening to the colts on the radio because when i was growing up they were blacked out on television because they couldn't sell out the hoosier dome yeah no i didn't he's thirty eight you couldn't see him it's been yeah he played for the colts from eighty four to ninety six and i was just looking it up and the colts moved to indian at the end eighty three so he was like a inaugural indianapolis colt like on that og eighty four team played all the way till ninety six started a hundred and eighty six games thirty five interceptions for the colts played one year in baltimore at the end of his career but yeah shout out eugene daniel that was a i maybe we'll cut to sergio brown and it'll just be a clip of me saying eugene daniel yeah alright we have questions we have a drive ahead of us brett because if you remember last week we were we started on our own two we fought for ten yards now we're at the twelve first and ten whole field's in front of us did another question call out hunting for explosives i'm taking a page out of the ben johnson book that's what we're doing here we're hunting for explosive questions only we can't dink and dunk our way down the field this whole time you know so first down crowd's rocking and this first down again defense is throwing a lot at us because the topic is just gonna be free agency and then we have several questions related to that the first of which from college uni cards what is the most impactful free agent movement from the hobby perspective so i'm assuming he's kinda talking about current transactions and reminder to listeners this is being recorded wednesday morning so things might have changed by then but brett to this point what's the kind of impactful free agent moves that you're seeing from a hobby perspective yeah i had to really think about this because a lot of these guys that are signing on teams are good players but you know aren't widespread the most like collectible guys they're very niche and the player that i just thought of or when i saw this question was travis kelce just travis kelce returning to the kansas city chiefs obviously there's interest in demand for kelce we're getting another travis kelce taylor swift year here maybe his last year but the chiefs are doing whatever they can to to load up and make another run after a disappointing campaign last year and i haven't looked at kel kelsey's market in a long time but i just remember that zone where it felt like there's like a six month period where like all of his best cards were coming out and they were selling for a lot of money so one of the best tight ends of all time is returning for another season highly collectible mainstream popularity i'm going with travis kelce what about you yeah that's a great one i was thinking about it from the hobby perspective quote unquote to me means quarterbacks so i'm like what any quarterback news that's going on i guess i think malik willis to miami is a interesting one where you got you got a new starting quarterback on a big franchise so i think and malik willis looked good in his appearances in green bay he kinda had a rough start in tennessee but here's a redemption chance with the dolphins so i think he's someone that probably like come national you know i don't think he'll be a tier one level buzz type of guy but i'm sure you'll see some malik willis cards out and about and in that same vein tua to atlanta i mean i don't know something there tua you know there's a lot of big tua cards out there that people have probably spent a lot of money on and him going to atlanta potentially competing for the starting job i don't know just the the quarterback movement is to me i think what's most impactful to the hobby perspective the i will say this about the two two atlanta news i'm not sure i've ever laughed at more memes about tua that or anytime but it was like the meme machine was all in on tua and dude i was literally in tears laughing and there wasn't just one there was like ten of them and i i wish tua the best it's interesting with pennix tua two left handers in atlanta that's kinda funny mhmm but yeah dude people have spent so much money on tua's cards i i feel like malik willis might be a little less tapped that market i feel like it was less juiced up because he never really got off the ground in tennessee and then it was a backup in green bay so your pick on willis is pretty good actually because the last we've seen of him is really good in green bay and that's exactly what these prospectors want they want the potential he's gonna get the starting job in miami so yep there's gonna be several cards at the national with malik willis on it that are thousands of dollars which will be entertaining to watch yes tua's highest sale ever only fifty thousand dollars i mean i know that's a ton of i know that's a ton of money but i guess like just with when he was drafted in twenty twenty and the boom and i mean he had a pro bowl year in was decent in miami for a couple years so i i'm just surprised he didn't you know break a justin herbert was selling for one point yeah whatever million for two same draft class having success to only be fifty thousand dollars to me was a little surprising i thought there'd be maybe a six figure sale his green pmg or pmg his his green kaboom must have never sold publicly yeah that's i'm not seeing it i don't know if it's finite ever sold it's a bunch of n t rpas n t like you remember the stars and stripes oh r p out out of twenty he had one sell for forty eight thousand dollars good lord the card ladder oh my god the card ladder value on that right now is five hundred and forty four dollars you're kidding me which i assume like normally when it's that specific means there's been one that like sold oh my god for that for that price oh yeah that card is selling for yeah hundreds of dollars now that's insane godspeed tua but hey tua seventy percent completion that's what's all that's all that matters right like you know caleb williams can't what are you doing you should be like tua complete seventy percent of your passes you can't throw a downfield you can't do anything else but hey you can be a check down merchant and get some completion percent this is what they should do in atlanta give me turn on the camera let's just get tua get penix get him in a room get matty ice in that room and let's just watch matty ice walk through what he does and his thinking in that interaction i think that would be a very entertaining watch of personalities between penix tua and matt ryan now that he's back in the building that's something i would definitely wanna watch yeah but matt ryan not making any decisions apparently this the bears were supposed to get comp picks because the falcons hired the bears' assistant gm ian cunningham is now the falcon's gm but they're saying that he even though he's the gm is not making the decisions because matt ryan is above him they hired matt ryan as the president which is just a loophole nfl figure it role yep yeah like come on alright not like second down of the first down is so this is like the ball's been snapped we've we've hit our drop the back of the drop what's gonna happen best free agent signing your favorite team has ever made from sweetfeet cards i had to think for a second on this a lot of like the signings that were going on in my head were trades and so i was like i gotta get something specific you know i landed on twenty twenty philip rivers time and place it was one of those moments you know we were healing post andrew luck we knew jacoby brissett couldn't wasn't the guy to to be the guy so we needed we had a just drafted a pittman junior we just drafted jonathan taylor they bring in phil after a down year in i think he had one year in la right or did he just exclusively play for san diego i think he was in la for a couple okay he was in la for one year maybe let's see that last year was forgettable for phil so he still wanted to play so we brought him in and it was awesome like it was so much fun even though it was covid year man it's forever ago it was the last time the colts were in the playoffs but it's just a fun season man he was slanging it around getting the rookies going and so that really i went from not liking philip rivers because he he was competition to like loving philip rivers so it has to be rivers yeah he actually three years in la was it that long yeah they moved for the twenty seventeen season and then he was there seventeen eighteen nineteen colts in twenty twenty wow i love this then on his pro football reference four straight years of did not play retired saint michael catholic high school head coach in parentheses yeah this was tougher i kept thinking of players that they were trades same thing i remember being so hyped for cordell stewart signing to the bears after i had just really become a bears fan in like two thousand one and then watching like the rotation of jim miller and shane matthews and chris chandler and just like these boring old white pocket quarterbacks to go to that like weight working cordell stewart slash are you kidding me of course it didn't work out so one that did work out that i think is a favorite sign the the best thomas jones thomas jones was a great running back he was great man on the super bowl team so there have been definitely other players who've been signed who are have made impacts julius peppers but i like thomas jones thomas jones was awesome love running backs and then in the same vein from timmer's cards free agent signing you hated at first but worked out or vice versa this was the easiest one for me like instantly came to my mind eric ebron he was supposed to be this big tight end receiver lions it never really worked out i'm like really we're bringing in ebon and luck just got him fourteen touchdowns i think it was in twenty eighteen he was just like a touchdown machine with luck so he's also got some pris he's got some colts prism stuff i love that so i went from like not being excited to like being fired up about him one guy that i did not like or was pumped about that didn't work out rip arthur jones he was on that daunting ravens defense the cold signed him and he could never stay healthy he just he just never got going and it was a moment where we had never spent in free agency and it was like one of the first like big free agent signings and it just was an absolute disaster yeah yeah looking doing some research for this question reminded me of like oh yeah this free agent signings don't always work out they actually the time they don't they have a very low hit rate and yeah all i saw when i was reading this question was free agent signing you hated at first and i never stopped hating this when the bears signed mike glennon gave him forty five million dollars for three years and then drafted mitch trubisky like a month later and it just it reminded me of like see how far we've come like the it used to be free agency was a time where i'm sitting there screaming like what are you doing and like the decisions make no sense and now it's just i'm like i trust this this organization and it's nice it's nice to feel that way and seeing seeing mike glennon i do have a mike glennon twenty seventeen gold prism that again you just gotta you gotta get those pieces even if you you didn't like how it worked out or it ended soon yeah and oh orlando pace i remember they signed orlando pace the same year that they traded for cutler and i was like oh my god the bears got the quarterback they got the left tackle and i think pace played like five games so was he hurt he played yeah he played a few games got hurt and then retired okay so signed a three year contract but didn't even play all those three years only play only played nine games and then yeah alright oh no yeah sorry i'm confused with so many questions on so you guys has us confused here what do you do this is from chargers pc sports cards what do you do with your pc team player cards if the player leaves or is traded this is one of the most fascinate this is the my favorite question yes because this is was on my mind as i'm watching free agency unfold and then look looking at the for signal on instagram and seeing what's happening looking for signal on ebay and one of the most fascinating things that i think about and this is like something i've never thought about but there's a set true a a clear separation here there are collectors in this space that will only keep cards of guys if they are on their team like right now and that doesn't resonate with me at all like i dude i could not imagine selling my michael pittman nebula black finites my gold prisms my gold vinyl those cards i love and will always love them because of the memories and moments that michael pittman gave me as a colts fan he was so awesome and i just knew with him with alec pierce signing it was we couldn't keep him like he had a down year he was o twenty nine million so we needed to relieve some of that cap and he went to the steelers which i think is a even though their quarterback situation is up in the air if you're a steelers fan you're gonna absolutely love michael pittman junior he rules tough ass player old school in a way but it makes me want the cards even more to attach to the memories but i i've i'm seeing collectors just sell everything because the player leaves the team and i think that's fascinating it's just like dynamic in in the hobby where there are collectors like i mentioned that just want to hold cards of players who are actively playing for their team so that that couldn't be any more different than the way i think about my collecting and collection collection but and there's no wrong way to do it i just find that ultra fascinating yep yeah it's going through it with the the dj moore news out of chicago where god things happen so fast it feels like they the bears just got dj moore and i like a month ago that he left yeah that too but after his first year in chicago he had thirteen hundred yards and i was like wow he has a chance to be the all time bears leading receiver because the record is just five thousand and fifty nine yards from johnny morris in the fifties and sixties so i've just always want like i've been fascinated by that i'm like will i ever watch someone get more than five thousand yards for the bears alshon jeffrey made it to forty five hundred yards brandon marshall made it to thirty five hundred yards dj moore ends his bears career with three thousand and twelve yards yeah it's a it's a bummer but it makes sense like right now it just football is business he he has a big contract kind of a trade that felt like good for both parties like dj moore gets to go be josh allen's number one and luther burton and roma dunze and colston loveland get to be the young guys with caleb williams so and the bears freed up a bunch of cap space so it's a bummer how similar are these situations with receiver in indianapolis and in chicago they let their number ones go to let the younger guys we got alec pierce josh downs and tyler warren yep yeah and it's like it's like almost like a replica yeah that's a that's a great call and yeah it's as far as dj more cards i kind of even like that i'm like alright now i know what my three year window is of dj moore bears cards it doesn't make me want them any less maybe they're not like my priority to go out and get at this point because i feel like i'll have my chances but no it dj moore had two of the greatest moments as a bears fan this year so like he'll always have a place in the pc so what do i do when that happens to me it's just like if it tells a story and the store the story is still the same dj moore had two walk off touchdowns against the packers like that's the story that i wanna tell so he'll always be in the pc i feel like i i need to share this in real time just because it i just saw this come across but ian rapaport reported that trey hendrickson was going to sign with the colts before the ravens failed max crosby's physical and pivoted him so you wanna talk about the ripple effect there there you go the the the other thing about free agency that's just hilarious is all the like reports of like this team's interested in this or this is what like the almost are hilarious like the the bears also offered two first rounders for max crosby but their picks weren't as high so that's why they went with the i'm like i don't know if any of this is real but yeah here's the it the market's gonna be so different by the time this goes live so thank you football card listeners for bearing with us first down they got a sack because i've they threw four plays at us bobbled that fourth one it's now second and fifteen so we're goodness we're behind the sticks alright from five zero four person with prism in its last year how would you rank every year from twenty twelve to twenty twenty five this actually is probably this is like right in my wheelhouse and i felt like i've talked about this i've done content about this but i've never done it at its end and i wanted to be a little creative and do it tournament style and this is how i've done it i wanna classify i'm just classifying how these eras are in my mind as a prism collector so the first era is twenty twelve through twenty fourteen then we've got twenty fifteen to twenty eighteen then we've got twenty nineteen to twenty twenty two then twenty three to twenty five so i'm taking all five four of those eras we look at era one definitely the toughest these are the most beloved these three mhmm years they all have qualities on top of qualities first year shine unique imagery all the things i went with twenty fourteen i know not debut year okay twenty fourteen's black finites are the best cards in the prism era full stop that's why i had to choose them they are something special so i'm picking twenty fourteen in the twenty fifteen twenty eighteen bucket i am picking twenty fifteen even though there are no finites i think it is the most professional looking year of prism ever you've got the debut of gold vinyl and white sparkle you've got low in parallels that look great one and done like the violet mosaic twenty fifteen's coming out on top the next bucket twenty twenty is winning that one in a landslide the shine those cards roll the last bucket twenty four the photography rolls so then i'm taking these two twenty fourteen verse twenty fifteen they're going head to head and twenty twenty and twenty twenty four are going head to head i'm picking twenty fourteen because of its uniqueness in the finite versus twenty four so the finals is ten years apart fourteen through twenty four in this tournament style and the winner is twenty fourteen prism my favorite year of prism of all time wow march madness bracket i love it i love that that's how you did it i just went i was like alright let me just list these off and see if i can do it and taking into consideration because i feel like there's a couple ways you can go you can go just like design right or can go the legacy part of it which i chose to include i was just thinking like if i had a player who was in every year which card would i want most and then like proceeding through the years so here's my order i'm just gonna run through it chalk for the first four i went twenty twelve twenty thirteen twenty fourteen twenty fifteen in that order then twenty twenty four is my fifth twenty twenty is my sixth so i have love for those two as well to to get up there then twenty eighteen twenty seventeen twenty twenty five twenty twenty two twenty twenty three twenty sixteen twenty twenty one twenty nineteen my least favorite did that in thirty seconds if i if i spent more time on it it there there might be some shuffling in the back end but yeah i think overall twenty nineteen twenty twenty one those are my kinda least favorite years can i ask you a question yeah so this is what i i'm just curious on this so my least favorite year is twenty twenty two like i can't stand the fat borders like it just obviously you don't hate it as much as i hate it you you put twenty nineteen what nice things do you have to say about twenty twenty two so i think it the shine's good and i do like the big borders on the because it's a lot of gold i want gold i don't know i think that because let me see who did i have lower than twenty twenty two twenty twenty three the shine isn't good i don't like the yellow yeah it's very yellow i had the bijan gold rookie and it it just never did it for me twenty sixteen i don't like the nonsolid borders twenty twenty one i feel like is always like off centered and just looks weird and maybe reminds me of justin fields' year and then twenty nineteen like the twenty nineteen finite's awesome but the rest of it yeah not for me so i don't know again i could be persuaded the the bottom five are all pretty interchangeable yeah dude we're we're aligned there like my yeah in terms of the the stink fest it's we got sim i might have a little more love for twenty nineteen because of the nostalgia of getting back into the hobby right but but i feel like my thoughts are similar to yours in in the bottom tier yeah having twenty one twenty two and twenty three in the bottom third i think is twenty twenty is awesome we're aligned on that twenty twenty is awesome but then i feel like that three year run until twenty twenty four they were just kinda they all a lot of them felt the same too it was like the hourglass border like in twenty twenty twenty one twenty three so i don't know and yeah if i think about it more i'm like oh that's too chalk to just put twenty twelve at the top but i just love a twenty twelve prism so hard to argue against it dude yep part two of that question from hall of fame cigs a super factor from tops chrome or finite from prism which is the superior one of one when i pick up the black finite it sends chills down my spine so i got love for the superfractor but i am not a topps guy i'm a i'm a black finite guy at a panini prism yeah i love i love them both i think superfractors are awesome just they're the og and the the swirl there's like that is an incredible looking pattern but i love like a rainbow refractor shine that the finite provides like a superfractor doesn't give that sit the superfractor has the gold feel it feels totally different so yeah i've got i think personally the finite but i totally respect the super factor alright second down we i think incomplete it's third and long it's third and long see we're we're explosive play hunting brett we're spreading them out and they're stopping us right now but third and long from drake's pc shout out drake another question what is an insert or parallel that you wish your pc player had but don't for example i know many brady collectors wish he had a flir brilliance twenty four carat card so i guess for this there's two thoughts i had one is being era accurate like brady wasn't even in ninety eight right so to me that's like we're just making shit up there like that's like i would want to find like what is a player that was like in a year but they're not in a certain set or parallel and if if i'm going that direction priest holmes was on the ravens in ninety seven i think if priest holmes had a ninety seven green pmg that would be an awesome card it's like he was in the league during the year of this release he could have been on the checklist even though he was like a four string running back priest holmes green pmg but if i'm not being like era accurate if you wanna call it that i mean a priest homes finite would be awesome a priest homes twenty four karat would be awesome i guess that's an accurate one but or ninety eight credentials too him having one of the credentials from ninety eight would be awesome so yeah priestholms and then mike brown superfractor just a mike a superfractor of any year of bear safety mike brown would be high on my list what were you thinking for this one brett so my struggle bob sanders is one of my favorite players of all time but he doesn't have many great cards so i just went post playing day right like i said my favorite defensive of player with my favorite parallel and i'll even add another layer because i'm twenty fourteen hype man right now twenty fourteen bob sanders black finite i would clear the bank account for that card i i would love that card we talk about like post playing days do we like it or not i think guys who were never around when prism started like having them have a prism card like one year just doing it once yep and having an opportunity for a gold or a black finite is fun and bob sanders is an easy selection for me yeah i fully come around onto that side of it where i'm like mike brown like their offering wasn't that big while they were playing so if they come out if at this point if they came out with new cards i would be interested alright that was third down we came up short it's fourth down brett do we go for it let's go for it dude alright fourth and five we're going for it and this is a question from buy buy baby cards andy and alright i'm gonna read one part he andy did his research for this shout out andy so the question is based on the recent there was a post i think adam gray twenty seven card guy did something about there hasn't been a million dollar football sale since the brady contenders championship ticket in june of twenty twenty three and so andy asks why does the fact that no football card has sold for over a million since that brady championship ticket in june of twenty three suddenly get framed as nobody collects football cards then andy goes on and this is some great context he says the stat that circulated this week lacks context and ends up being pretty misleading why is one million the benchmark we're using to measure the health of an entire sports collecting base baseball dominates the threshold largely because of vintage firepower babe ruth mickey mantle hannes wagner and roberto clemente account for twenty one of the twenty five million dollar baseball sales add in the joe doyle error and that becomes twenty two once you remove vintage icons the modern list gets very thin essentially shohei ohtani and the paul skeens dick's sporting goods purchase basketball's multimillion dollar market is similarly concentrated just in a different way it's overwhelmingly driven by one gravitational force michael jordan the one million dollar category is largely built around jordan kobe and lebron there's a very small cluster of athletes carrying an entire tier of the market so basically he's you know breaking down and i like seeing it that way where it's like eight of those million dollar sales are babe ruth seven are mickey mantle you know like they're a lot of it are these vintage guys and oh and andy finished it by saying and importantly modern stars across sports rarely break the million dollar barrier anyway wemby the most hyped rookie in years hasn't crossed it shohei ohtani who many end up who may end up one of the greatest baseball players ever and benefits from massive international demand has only two one million dollar sales so framing football collecting around the absence of a recent million dollar sale ignores how that tier actually functions the million dollar market isn't a broad measure of hobby health it's a very narrow intersection of generational athletes historically iconic cards and timing of when those prices surface publicly and by that standard football simply hasn't had its biggest grails hit the market lately so a lot there a lot to unpack in this just topic i guess this this very crucial fourth down topic of do people collect football cards no nothing selling for a million dollars what's your take on this whole situation brett great question andy i'd expect nothing less love the background context i'll start that here because my memory jogs me back to a couple episode where we're talking about brady yeah and i love the context about the vintage baseball guys and michael jordan and kobe and lebron tom brady is at the top of the football mountain not everybody loves tom brady actually a lot of people do not like tom brady his passionate base is very passionate patriots fans they're they're into brady they're wanting stuff they're willing to spend a lot i would never consider or think of doing that ever because brady was my rival there are people that just don't like tom brady so like football has that working against it i'm willing to admit tom brady's card should be the most expensive but he's he's i think he's more polarizing of a top tier category athlete than maybe anybody else so there's that i also think that i i think this bit around no one ever collect no one collects football cards is a bit i think it's just a joke to have people get angry and spun up if it's not a bit and we're comparing collecting to a million dollar sales then the argument is i mean we can rip it apart and tear it to shreds because it makes absolutely no sense like what how many what category or tier of people can actually afford a million dollar cards are they collectors or are they buying it from an investment perspective so i think there's a lot there but yeah man that's that's kinda where my head's at right now what about you yeah i mean i think this whole thing prove what this proves is no one collects baseball or basketball cards they keep coming up for sale all the rarest football cards are locked down like i haven't seen a brady superfractor sell in you know years and years i haven't seen a brady finite sell in years and years if like one of those cards comes to market those are million dollar cards but they're all locked away in collections because football card collectors actually collect the card basketball and baseball they're just flippers they're always they're flooding the market with the cards that's why there's so many million dollar sales like i can't look at this data and say no one collects football cards now oh shine and mister wonderful now there's a real basketball collector right there like that's basketball players in the world collectors in the world yeah they're the best basketball card collectors in the world exactly so i don't know like the no one collects football cards thing is a bit in in my mind that's not real but i i do think there's something there of like a if a brady suit i guess a brady finest superfractor did recently come to market the finest o five sold for seven hundred thousand dollars an authentic copy it's pretty beat up i don't know if that played a factor in it or not but i think if a brady you know tops chrome super factor hit the market today it would go over a million dollars for you know one of his like a twenty ten twenty eleven twenty twelve that era of super factor is awesome i bet if his o six bohman chrome super factor hit the market brady's that would be a million dollar card and this kind of just brought me back to a couple episodes when we were talking about if every football card went up for auction what would win and it similar thought process of like what cards would cross a million like does the josh allen twenty eighteen finite cross a million on the prospecting front i don't know i was thinking maybe but then i looked and lamar jackson's just sold for ninety thousand dollars last year which seems i mean two guys who haven't won anything i don't know i think there's only a handful of cards from football that would break a million a lot of them brady cards and i don't know bronco nugurski he's got crazy vintage numbers like maybe if his top grade hits the market like but it it's all back to football doesn't have that level of vintage base that baseball does like seeing that twenty five baseball cards sold for over a million dollars and no football cards did does not mean more people collect baseball cards it means like the mickey mantle and babe ruth cards that people are like the type of people who are spending million dollars on cards are buying those because they're so ingrained in our society as these valuable cards like that mickey mouse card's been on the cover of every sports card almanac for the past seventy years like it is just like a thing and it doesn't mean more people collect baseball it just means like there are cards that are baseball cards that happen to have seventy years of providence that people want to put their millions of dollars into for sure i think football cards has never had its michael jordan and i don't want brady collectors to get upset about that in comparing accolades and championships that's not what this is about this is about the popularity the imagination the capturing hearts and minds and jordan is that and more for for basketball honestly dude i know we're hitting like all categories the we are early even though the prices are very high but the buy the vibes i'm getting from shohei ohtani are are they're they're they're way closer to the michael jordan than tom brady ever was from the popularity capturing the hearts and minds and the imagination like dude shohei ohtani gets up to plate you're flipping through the channels this year what are you doing you're stopping and you're watching him at at bat like he is he is like we're we've got one of these guys like active which i think is fun so yeah man there's a lot of different factors in this but i i i i i do think people collect football cards that's what i'll say i'm one of them yeah yeah shohei's shohei's baseball reference shout out baseball baseball card pod so much bold four mvps in the last five years three straight mvps two straight world series championships like unbelievable hitter unbelievable pitcher is like yes at that transcendent level i feel like mahomes was when mahomes went back to back and like got that mvp like last two years for mahomes have been i don't wanna say rocky but like he and i know pro bowls don't count but he hasn't made a pro bowl in the last two years the stars are are absent from his page it's just like in the now is so it's so much harder where it's like babe ruth is babe ruth like he's stab you know like jordan it's jordan's been out of the league for twenty five plus years like you know like that stuff's all solidified like twenty years from now brady will i think be viewed differently i think even for sure like the same way brady's polarizing i feel like lebron's similar in basketball a lot of people hate it a lot of people fucking hate lebron and correct i think history will be kind to those players where it's like once they're out of the daily news cycle and every move that they're doing is like under a mice microscope it's like oh just look at once everyone all they can do is watch highlights and look at their pro football or pro basketball pages history will treat them kindly so i don't know interesting topic though it is crazy that when you see like those numbers that there's forty five cards that sell for a million and none are football it's like what what's going on but i like peeling back the layers and seeing that you know there there's reasons for everything shout out to the community man shout out and shout out to so that was fourth and five which alright hold on let me do some math here because that means we were out to the seventeen and thanks to that was an explosive question andy and that was an explosive play for thirty yards oh good goodness we are up to the forty seven first and ten from the forty seven we're near midfield next see that's that's the ben johnson offense we're explosive play hunting you might take two incompletions in a row but then you know what you hit a thirty yard chunk gain first and ten from the forty seven we'll be back next week with as the drive continues alright nfl check-in we kinda touched on free agency a little bit anything else that standing out that just glued glued to my phone yeah i it as we're recording this it feels like after i get done with this episode i just wanna read all the content because i've been trying to look at it but it it feels like it's nonstop i'm still waiting for the as we record this the daniel jones deal which sounds like it should be should be done today but we'll see but yeah this i'll i'll actually i do wanna touch on this real quick there's an argument out there that why would you pay daniel jones all this money when you can get kyler murray at the vet minimum price that is insane to me and it's insane to me because first of all like i find it interesting that everyone like treats these decisions like it's their money it's like this isn't your money like this is the organization's money do you wanna win or do you wanna lose what where are you where's your head at i think this kyler and daniel jones narrative that i have to i'm hearing colts fans talk about is insanity to me it's like people forget that before daniel jones got hurt that the colts were eight and two had one of the most prolific offenses in nfl history like peyton manning level they didn't punt and all they did was score touchdowns and the behind the scenes stuff we have struggled to have someone who is a leader who is first in the building who the whole locker room likes that stuff really matters in the nfl like having a guy people rally around that matters more than anything and so i know we've got that with jones and yes there's risk with injury but i'll take the risk with injury over kyler murray who is i feel like been a very polarizing player for a lot of reasons so i'm i'll be glad when that's put to bed and i'll be interested knock on wood hopefully when a healthy daniel jones comes out and steps on the field and starts back where he left off i'll be interested to hear where all the kyler murray to colts complainers are at so that's i had to get that one off my chest pal talk to him yeah bring back danny like the colts were so good jones looked so good injuries suck but yeah it's like having that continuity like bringing jones back with everything going on versus like bringing in a new quarterback even even not kyler even if it was someone else comparable to daniel jones i'd rather have the guy that's already been in the offense for a year and knows the locker room likes him and want like has all that those connections and that rapport built already versus getting a new guy caught up to speed and like really feels like once jones is healthy the colts will be building on the success they were having early last season and not like starting fresh or anything so yeah what about you what's what's been on your mind i don't know i'm just in enjoying an off season i mean i know still have twinges of like the bears were close last year like the the caleb williams to playoff touchdown is always in my feed once a day someone's like reposting it or something because i follow so many bears accounts and i'll be like how'd they lose that game and i and i'll get sad for a second but i'm like nope that's behind us focused on the future i like what this team is doing i trust polls i trust ben johnson i'm excited for the draft like let's go and and maybe they get max crosby i don't know i don't think they'll get max crosby i don't honestly i don't want them to mortgage a lot of their future on they're already paying montez sweatt they're already paying grady jerry they're already they have so much money that they've taken swings on for the defensive line that just like paying another guy a bunch of money doesn't make sense to me so i don't know but kobe bryant and devin bush seem sick like i'm watching highlights and i'm like okay these guys are awesome this is perfect i wanna ask you about a player you're probably not expecting me to ask you about but khalif rayman i think oh yeah i think when you this is what i love to see and the colts were obviously trying to do this with lou anarumo and trey hendrickson and that uniting from the old team into the new team but you love to see that because the coach has vetted the player he knows he's good he knows where he can fit him in when you saw that you gotta be like that's a good sign right yeah because he had a couple of games where he kinda like torched the bears and the bears returner devin duvernay had some big plays this year but i don't know i you love an exciting return guy and just maybe a gadget on offense exactly ben johnson knows him he had his most productive years when ben johnson was there as offensive coordinator in detroit so no a a good piece i like all the moves the bears are making like add depth it's not about always the splashy player like to me that's kinda where you can get burnt sometimes if you look at the seahawks who won last year and the eagles the year before that they both had like seven defensive linemen that they're just rotating in neither of them had like a last year the eagles sack leader had seven sacks or the the seahawks sack leader had seven sacks you know so it's like yeah you don't need the guy getting twenty sacks yes it's awesome to have the game wrecker but it's also cool to just have like seven capable good pass rushers that you can rotate in and always have a fresh body out there and just like good coaching and good scheme and it's so much more than just spending thirty million dollars on the one guy and trading two first rounders like look at the packers they mortgaged everything for micah parsons who is sick but then he gets hurt and then what do you do like you know you're putting all your eggs in a basket some might say so i will say that off our teams the one one free agent signing that when i saw it i loved it and it made so much sense was kenneth kenneth walker the third to the the chiefs yeah super bowl mvp to a team wanting to come up after a rough year who is always in the super bowl it was like and they need a running back and they realized probably jeremiah love's not gonna last in for us and so that one that to me right now as we're recording this is like the one piece that probably made the most sense to me and i think he'll have an immediate impact i think he's a great player continuity with mahomes is gonna be easy i i think that one has a really good shot to be a really good signing yeah i think so i was kinda bummed to see mike evans leave the bucks because love when a player we love one jersey players here in collecting world but i will say going to the 49ers maybe it's just because like the colors are kinda similar but that it feels like a good transition i thought that too mike mike evans to the ravens would never work like mike evans in purple no but mike evans in red and gold this time instead of red and black it's like okay yeah i can it still looks alright to me it's still it's it's not as much of a knock on the mike evans like lore as if he would have went to yeah like the chargers and he's playing in like powder blues or it's like no mike evans doesn't wear it mike evans wears red and he scores red zone touchdowns so that and he's i still think he's got some in the tank i like the idea of kittle and evans being right next to each other like good luck stopping that yeah alright good questions we got a oh that was the check-in see we're we're a little discombobulated this morning the the the amount of questions got us thank you for all the questions so a lot we we might keep it going we might ask for some questions to finish out this drive but let's move into marketwatch let's talk about some sales real quick okay this sale was insane and i saw your notes on this and i didn't even realize it had the sticker on it i didn't even realize it we're talking about the nineteen ninety eight bowman's best randy moss atomic refractor selling for twenty two thousand and two hundred dollars p s eight ten this card is a population twenty one the last sale of this card was six thousand nine hundred in february and this was a bgs ten and so a psa ten you know more than three times that because it's a psa ten and it's got a sticker on it what do you say about this that's insane because normally i feel like a bgs ten sells pretty comparable to a psa ten like i feel like a black label will sell more than a psa ten but a psa ten and a pristine bgs ten yeah i'd give the edge to psa but not a three x edge like i don't know this is crazy and yes this card has an nba sticker on it which i said i hate an nba sticker dumbest thing in the hobby like yeah let's have some guy grade an already graded card like where there's a case around like that makes no sense to me that no when a card is already encased someone feels that they're able to then give an another grade to a card that they can't even fully see like i don't know stickers are so dumb especially i've seen stickers on one on ones it makes no sense literally makes no sense but twenty two thousand dollars for this card also i don't wanna say it doesn't make sense but it's just a a big sale for a card numbered out of a hundred yes i this is reminding me of covid territory we're new player new new new face but same story this is what was happening during the covid boom is that you'd have psa tens with you know twenty to fifty copies selling for you know tens of thousands of dollars and this is what this reminds me i will say this about this card because we haven't said anything nice about this card this scan is incredible aesthetically this card is it's a rookie card it is an amazing randy moss card it rules we're just talking about the surrounding environment of it basically but this card is awesome yes card itself so sick but it it kinda reminds me of of what you're talking about we're in the covid territory and also i was about to say like being first to market is good and bring up the recent reggie miller greenpmg saga i don't know if you saw any of that i didn't where reggie's greenpmg sold in february of last year a psa five for a hundred and twenty six thousand dollars and then it just sold again a psa six for fifty seven thousand dollars so a grade higher seventy thousand dollars less a year later and kind of the takeaway is what a year ago when that hit the market it hadn't sold in years and years and it goes for a crazy price another one surfaces takes a haircut we saw that with the dan marino credentials as well mhmm similar thing happened but i wanted to say that's what maybe happened for this moss but one sold three months ago or like not a p s a ten but a b g s ten so it's not like no one had seen this card in five years and it surfaced and had this insane bidding war it i don't i don't know what to make of this one that's just a big sale there's so many different like markets inside different markets and players i will say this the hundred copy cards like this that look awesome i don't think the future of them is favorable as we as collectors are living in this era of the one of one and of like the game use material like fanatics and topps is doing with that game like having something unique that only you can own is the trend that we're moving towards so i don't like i don't wanna disparage anything like this but it just feels like we're we're in this moment in this hobby where like what happened in one era starts not to make sense because of what is happening in the current era and i think a lot of that has to do with like the price discrepancies and the case for certain cards i think i'm glad we have card ladder so we can analyze this in real time but i just think like what's happening on the front end today is like going to influence some of these prices that's i say all that to say if randy moss is my favorite player and i needed this card really bad i hope i'd have the like mindset to be like i i can't possibly put twenty two thousand dollars in but then again we don't know who like bought this card twenty two thousand dollars could be absolutely nothing to them they just could've wanted the card so that's why i think the hobby is so interesting and why these like one direction takes we hear of like black and white it's it's it's complicated man the hobby is very complicated but even if it's if twenty two thousand dollars is nothing to that person i feel like it's you could still get it you could get it cheaper or like you could like it it's not i don't know i don't know it's so hard to i can't sit up here and be like it's not worth that or this is an overpay because maybe another one pops up and it sells for thirty thousand and this looks brilliant but i this makes me excited there's a the randy moss twenty twelve finite is currently at auction ending when this goes live it ends it ends saturday this weekend what's it at right now on golden let's see it's currently at thirteen thousand four hundred with buyer's premium so if that ends under twenty two thousand dollars i would rather have the moss finite than this bowman's best i think it would go higher than twenty two but he's he's in a 49ers gear and i know this is a rookie so i don't know but i'm just very interested to see that finite sale we move over into twenty twenty four prism caleb williams your guy cherry blossom choice psa ten which is a pop one gen z quarterback with the gen z parallel this thing sold for thirty three thousand dollars dude thirty three k good luck getting your gold prism after a sale like this god and are these these are numbered right i'm searching numbers i hope so yeah think they're okay they're numbered out of fifteen it looks like okay but yeah i was dying when i read your note about the gen z parallel and then i'm like this card this card is is this card looks maxine and the parallel is this yeah this parallel yeah this parallel mog the gold prism dude are we are we do we have some clav content going right now so i mean what's going on here that's a that's a hell by the way that's a hell of a influencer where we can talk i'm forty years old and we can talk about your looks maxing on the football card podcast because of a cherry blossom choice parallel but what a life man i i follow that guy all along man he's a such a such a dork but god it's entertainment great entertainment do you know adam friedland the adam friedland show i don't he like crossed into my he's hilarious he's like a comedian he does like a okay late night interview show and he had clavicular on there and i was like fat i was just fascinated by the whole thing and i was cracking up but yeah this card looks maxing parallel mog in the gold god if i i hope there's a segment of the there's definitely a lot of the audience being like what the hell are these guys talking about but for you for you gen zers who are like on like one of those electronic bicycles listening to this hopefully you enjoyed that we move over into the nineteen ninety seven pinnacle totally certified platinum gold barry sanders out of thirty p s a ten selling for thirteen thousand eight hundred dollars this is a football card man this card looks awesome i love the full shot of barry getting ready to make a cut i love like the you're looking at him from the side which not enough barry sanders cards really show like this stocky man who just like knew how to run you over or juke you but the way this design is laid out it feels like barry is running and it's like the wind is behind him this card has it going on man yeah and i i don't know much about these and at first was like platinum gold you can't be both like just stick to one color that's like the panini black gold prism but this works like it just looks awesome the way that the two colors blend together and then my favorite little detail on these i don't know i don't think you can get to a back picture but these have like these are numbered out of thirty but it's the four digit serial numbers so it's zero zero one seven slash zero zero thirty and that's just sick give me the extra extra numbers in there that it's not like it's numbered out of a four digit number you just they just threw those extra two zeros on just for the hell of it so shout out platinum golds this one just popped me big time when i found it it the listing just says twenty four twenty fourteen panini select prism rob gronkowski one of one and it is a raw copy of a rob gronkowski black prism out of select twenty fourteen sold for eight k via best offer dude this is one of those cards that i feel like hit ebay and hit someone's safe search and they were just like you gotta be kidding me and i don't know what it was listed for but someone just threw in a probably a best offer i can't imagine this card lasted very long honestly the fact that it was best offer i'd have to know the list price but this to me has been smashed written all over it i looked at this card i was like man i've never seen this card before this is incredible and i've seen some cool gronk cards so this is one of my favorite listings for the week and eight k for the second year select gronk i don't think it's too bad yeah that card is awesome i love the gronk he's got like the barry bonds arm armor on like where his whole like the the end not the end of gronk but his like final years in new england where he had like so much gear on but he's still making insane catches and just running across the field so this card rules alright we move over to the two thousand and four certified materials anquan bolden black mirror one of one patch full equipment shield fifteen hundred dollars on march eighth it's sold for on ebay saw this card we don't talk about game worn patches a lot there is such a community around those within our audience so i wanted to give it some love but yeah if this is your thing i would imagine this is a card that gets you very excited the full equipment shields that's what collectors want so antquan bolden was so sick yeah this card is awesome i want i don't know if i need to look at a checklist priest holmes if he's in this i want it send it to me hit me up awesome card this got me thinking because this recently happened well two things one in two thousand two when the bears when soldier field was under construction the bears played a year at in champaign illinois where university of illinois and i went to a preseason game bears jaguars at the end of the game i like went down behind the jaguars bench fred taylor was like sitting on the bench and i was like mister taylor can i have your glove threw me his glove it was awesome like i had fred taylor's glove it like was my coolest piece of memorabilia ever as a kid thought it got lost to time but then over the weekend my mom brought a oh my god a box of like random stuff that she had while cleaning out her house and the glove was returned to me with the equipment shield on it i'm have a little fred taylor equipment shield in my possession and just i i thought that glove was gone forever i was very hype when it came and yeah just tie it back to equipment shields rule they should they should bring that back that's i was not expecting you to pull out a fred taylor glove but that's where we're at here we got the final card here twenty thirteen select damn reno gold prism everybody likes these cards it seems like this is a psa ten this is just like a we talk about these regularly so wanted to share pop two selling for three k via auction so again marino wasn't playing during any of these but like this to me is cool so yeah strong sale yeah and what jumps out to me is i was looking this sold raw for a hundred and fifty dollars in twenty twenty two and then for a psa ten to now be three thousand dollars in twenty twenty five or twenty twenty six i don't know what to make of it is it like the set and football cards are finally getting their due or is it this is a arena bubble is it spike is it ever gonna come back down to earth or then are there just cards now that have this potential like what's the hundred and fifty dollar rock card i could get now that is worth three thousand dollars in three years do those exist or not i don't know it's wild times right now in the the card football card hobby the card hobby in general so absolutely let's go through a couple collecting updates get out of here current what are current collecting projects that you're focusing your resources on i'll do a couple real quick one shout out to gb gold ten this was the listener and friend who sent me a lance briggs prism gold that he was able to snag on ebay after my lance briggs gold got stolen in the mail and i'm just trying to pull up he sent a nice note about it basically that hey packers fans and bears fans can get along because he is in has an awesome packers collection and he said i'll get it out tomorrow morning don't want anything for it just let people know a packer fan united with a bears fan to help out with a missing prism gold what a dude so shout out g b gold ten go give him a follow awesome packers collection and then on another collecting update fell down a rabbit hole i was with my buddy who we both went to ball state and he's not a card guy but we were talking about when we were freshmen at ball state two thousand eight the football team started twelve and o and was like ninth in the bcs it was sick ball state football does not have success like that ever nate davis was the quarterback and he's like does what's nate davis' cards like or like does nate davis have cards and i was like that's a great question so i start searching i'm like no way he was like a late round pick but i'm like well he's a quarterback so drafted in two thousand nine fifth round quarterback nate davis has a lot of cards and i went on a spree just buying a five to fifteen dollar nate davis cards like i got his n t true rpa for fourteen dollars i got a three color exquisite patch like for ten dollar i was like oh this is awesome i just get to buy all these like sick cards that i don't have of other players of this guy his o nine bowman chrome gold just like awesome cards out there and i love finding like a ten dollar obo card and still sending a five dollar offer still trying to you know get them down a little bit because then everyone's charging five dollars for shipping you don't need to charge five dollars for shipping when it just shows up in a tiny little flimsy envelope so yeah been bought probably five or six nate davis cards i'll i'll fill a binder page of the former muncie legend what about you brad pair that'll pair nicely with your bonzi wells collection i know i gotta get the pages next to each other i will i'll share a bad and then a good so i need a gb because i posted this on instagram my two thousand twenty five jonathan taylor gold vinyl prism got stolen in the mail first time it's ever happened to me so i need a savior made a deal on instagram this package was like in god oklahoma forever and then it moved to texas and i got excited and then when it finally came it was just i got the the evidence here just torn open nothing inside yeah it sucks because like it i'm like why couldn't this be like a quiddy pay gold person somebody who i don't like but of course it has to be my favorite player and there's only five freaking copies of the that this card so i'm feels like there's no winning this i'm in the conversation with the seller they asked me like what do i wanna do in terms of like a refund and managing that it's just a bad situation i'll probably do a whole episode on it because i'm trying to just move on because there's nothing i can do about it so look out for that maybe next week i'll do go into detail because this is a trend now i'm impacted i've seen obviously you john and several others sucks so i i would i know the card is probably a little more expensive than the lance briggs gold but if if you can find me a copy i will reward you for it so that sucks but i will say what doesn't suck is the fact that i got oh yeah of ninety four nfl football joe montana in the mail and when i got it it just like literally came like this it's in a pretty good condition yeah before i opened it up i was like i hope the instruction booklet's in here instruction booklet it's in how good does that feel oh dude i've i've sat there and read through it all dude i've read the back so many times and this is what caught me just so off guard all the stars of the nfl pa are here aikman cunningham young elway irvin seow swilling and many more and i was like did they really just call out pat swilling on the back of the card on the back of the cover so i like went in this deep dive because like i hadn't thought about pat swilling forever but he's certainly i remember him being good to talk about career here he was two time first team all pro two time second team all pro a hundred and seven and a half career sacks nfl sack leader nfl defensive player of the year in ninety one i'm like dude this guy is way better than i remember him to be he played on the saints lions and raiders and then of course i went to card ladder to look up what his highest selling card is dude they talk about nostalgia a hundred and sixty four dollars eighty nine starting lineup autograph hat swelling card and so this instantly transported me to my starting lineup collectors collection and i go i think i have the eighty nine pat swelling so i pulled it up this is not my card itself but let me put it here just for the here's the oh yeah there it is number fifty when we get to fifty six there's gonna be a lot of pat swelling content coming your way i'm ready for the taped up taped up hands like come on that's perfect yes this made me feel better after the jonathan taylor of it all yeah speaking of the jonathan taylor of it all i do quickly i think we can unpack just like that's a situation i found myself in i think on both ends in my career of ship like doing a deal off ebay you ship the card it gets stolen so i've had it happen where i didn't insure it when i shipped and it just like when that happens what a should collectors always insure their cards when they ship on off ebay deals i think yes but then like b if you haven't because i know sometime like i i didn't always do it especially early on i i just didn't think about it i trusted the mail system and other people like in that situation who's at fault who eats the cost like how do you navigate that situation like however much you wanna reveal or it's like in your situation of how that's going down but just trying to think is there a way to that we can give advice to collectors out there who are might go through something similar yeah it's not fun there's no great answer i'll start here and ebay is a partner of stacking slabs and people complain about the authentication program the authentication program provides infrastructure in this hobby to transact and that's how i think about it and with that i don't have to deal with this stuff that's why i i'm willing to pay the fees on a platform like ebay because i know the card's going to end up where it needs to be so yeah there's that but it's i think it's case by case i don't wanna like disclose too much about the interaction i will say i think the individual i was working with maybe was a little newer to the hobby and i look back on the situation and i probably wish i would have suggested a few things which i would be i would have eaten the cost on my end to avoid this sort of situation i'll say this like if you're making deals and the card is you know above a certain threshold in this instance this card was two seventy five which i would've you know i i thought was a pretty strong deal i i like you gotta like don't use the lowest level of shipping like don't do that like make sure that you are doing whatever you can as the seller to make sure that the chance of that card hitting the doorstep is as high as possible and so when i am sending cards out which usually happens in two instances whether they're grading or whether it's consignment because i don't do a ton of direct deals i just don't when i'm doing that i will i don't care the cost i will always do overnight always because it minimizes these sorts of risks and so yeah i i would i thinking about it now i would have paid two hundred dollars more than i i would have paid four seventy five to get the card overnight and to be in my collection and avoid this headache so yeah don't skimp out on and i'm not suggesting that this is what happened with the seller i just think i should have done a better job through my discovery of us talking to educate that hey i'm willing to pay the for you to overnight this and it would have probably avoided this headache yeah during for me because yes early on i didn't always insure stuff or like expect it to like don't know it's just not something you think about until something like this happens and then you're like oh well that sucks but if i'm selling a card i always offer like like when i counter with a number if they're like i i'll do it or like i want it for two fifty i'll be like three hundred shipped insured like in the mail tomorrow like that's just part of the deal as like a a value add i'm like i'm gonna ship it it's gonna be insured and you're gonna get it in two days so like i'm expecting you to pay an extra twenty dollar you know just to help like that's just part of the package deal here so i think that's just something i would consider to all you listeners as you're negotiating just like be open and clear about like whoever's selling include insured shipping in the value of that card because then because when shit like this happens then it sucks because it's like i didn't get the card i'm out of the money who's like do we split the difference do and then you have to enter a whole different it's a mess too negotiation and like it sucks for it sucks for everyone involved so just like get ahead of it and include that extra fee in the value of the transaction alright good good education yeah we're just that's what we do on the football card we're here to help alright card call out do you have any specific thoughts for the next i'm i'm so bad at this i should have this all pulled up beforehand but because last week we did odd jerseys and it was sick i love seeing these and specifically god alright i might have to find it for next week's episode and bring it back but there was someone who messaged the account and they were like oh i this is what i do this is my pc like check out my story highlights and i go to their profile and they had like they have like players in odd jerseys highlight one and it was just like forty pictures of different cards of i was like oh my god this is so awesome i have to shout them out on the football card pod and then of course i didn't write it down but i will find a person's account and give them their due next week because it was very cool to see someone collecting in that manner but did you have any thoughts for a card call out this week brett you know based on the opening of this and this is i'm gonna dedicate this one specifically to my man black hat cards one of the coolest pages ever but we talked about the sergio brown of it all where there's you know questionable things that have happened with players what i wanna hear or i wanna see is i if you anyone who served time or who has been questionable a villain in a way like if you have their cards we're going a little dark with this one but i i want i kinda wanna see like you know it could be anything like i mean and it they don't maybe they don't necessarily need to serve time but like someone who would be considered like a bad boy of football let's see some bad boys villains criminals maybe someone who caused scenes on the field like anything like that like yeah and don't give me like joe horn pulling out the phone like that's more cute than it is like cute not bad yeah we want bad boys yeah yeah give me some bad boys okay card call out for episode thirty eight bad boys villains criminals crooks we want them all i'm thinking of who was it for the bears i don't have any of his cards but i need them sam heard he's like oh dude sam heard loved drugs he loved dude his operation was insane yeah he was for those that don't know sam heard was like a third or fourth receiver for the bears and he got caught by an undercover like sting basically he was in process of attempting to buy the most drugs ever like he was just gonna trying to buy so much freaking drugs and like the whole time he's like brokering this deal with an undercover agent they're like what the hell is this guy doing he was just trying to become a kingpin of chicago and went to oh in twenty thirteen got sentenced to fifteen years in prison so sam's getting out soon oh no he got out in twenty twenty three shout out sam heard gotta i gotta find a card but yeah bad boys can't wait to see him thank you all for listening to the football card podcast the number one football card podcast in the world we'll see you next week
