The Football Card Podcast #36: Moments Matter More Than Stats The 26K Josh Rosen Sale and Why Football Cards Keep Climbing

hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you're listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly cards i'm your host john aka pac nicholson and with me as always is brett mister stacking slabs himself brett how are you doing well it is a special time here in indianapolis indiana where the football card podcast resides it is a moment in our city that happens every year and it is the nfl combine and i don't think indianapolis gets enough love or attention on the city's ability to host such a massive event a kickoff to the new nfl season i consume a lot of football content and there has been talk about cities bidding on the combine to move it out of the city and indianapolis just keeps getting it and renewing it and i think they got two more years contracted after this it changes so frequently but i don't know what's fun about living here is this week and just going downtown literally imagine every person in the nfl from a staff executive perspective agents players obviously there's guys running around in t shirts and shorts on the field so you got prospects but if you've never experienced it it's it's a lot of fun i one thing that i love and you know just to i rep the city hard here i love it here i'm born and bred here and the combine's always been here but what's really fun is there's always like feedback from on podcasts about media that are here and then like even you know members of the nfl community and everyone always says we don't want it to move from indianapolis which is awesome and it's because the infrastructure of the city you can just walk everywhere you can walk from lucas oil to wherever you're staying to the steakhouse and i love that and what's fun about that because no matter the weather which it's cold here but not terrible there you go downtown you just stand on washington street stand on penn and you are going to run into somebody you know i've run into andy reid i've run into john harbaugh there's just been so many moments and you're standing there watching these coaches talk like in the public and you there's a lot of business happening you know this when they talk about like where agents are working on contracts and stuff it's literally happening at coffee shops and and steak houses in the city so there is so much happening here and it's awesome and i don't i'm i'm going to the pacers game sunday so i'm hoping and it'll be the tail end of it but i'm hoping i can get a moment just to like walk downtown and see who i bump into yeah break some news maybe even bump into mark sanchez in an alley you guys well careful careful now yeah no everything's happening downtown we need to get down there we need to yes next year there'll be some sort of football card pod activation or or marketing scheme like even if we just had you know football card pod billboard downtown all these execs are like what's this do i need to get my player or agents or like do i need to get my player on the football card pod it says it's the fastest growing and soon i think we might have to switch to longest running because yes brett this is the season three finale three full seasons it's gone by fast man i feel like we just started this i know it's three thirty six thirty six weeks i remember week one yeah i was in a hotel in las vegas so we we have grown we've come a long way to make it this far and thank you all to the loyal listeners of the football card pod because you can't be the fastest growing without growth and that that comes from the audience so thank you for staying loyal to the football card pod we appreciate it we've got a good number too this week and i will say it is one of those being where we're at where a player just instantly came to my brain so excited to jump in thank you to the audience of the football card podcast we're here for you and we're here to talk football cards let's get into it episode thirty six but that's not possible none of this is possible without our wonderful sponsors card ladder the only one wouldn't be able to do this without cardladder there is so much time spent in card cardladder so many i've had fun uploading some new cards to my collection this past week we've talked about this but i've got this pipeline of raw cards right now that are eventually going to be sent for grading so i like i have my own process where it's like i'm not putting these raw cards in now because they're eventually going to be in a holder we've talked about exceptions i've made an exception with my reggie wayne finite you did with your cutler just to get them in the collection but mhmm i love the collection feature so much so shout out cardladder for helping me stay organized and all my football cards in a place with prices and just some organization shout out cardladder the only ones the only ones yeah i have a i'm due to send off an order i just haven't i feel like i've been waiting biding my time but i have about probably close to thirty raw cards that i consider like my collection cards that need to get slabbed up or what's your reggie wayne grading plan are you gonna do that at the national or are you gonna ship them away or what are you thinking there my so i've got about i don't know thirty or forty cards too that are like my collection cards and i'm thinking about that submission and i i was thinking well do i make this reggie a part of this or not and then i you start doing some dollars and cents of it all and it's like maybe i just hold tight and do that in person so i don't have a final decision but right now i'm thinking of just doing the national grading on-site experience i've never participated in it i know it's a favorite for so many collectors just getting through that and that turnaround so that's what i'm i'm thinking about right now although no firm decision has been made yet mhmm not gonna try and sneak it into a valuable submission and just hope for no upcharge you remember when people were like back when they did estimated values and like that through that process part of the reason why everything was getting people were just like jamming like you know luca cards that were like silvers that were worth like ten thousand dollars and like economy orders and it was just screwing everything up so no i don't believe that i i'm more worried about like i want the insurance like be to and i want it to be covered just in case anything happened and that is john my biggest nightmare it's never like when i send a box to consignment or whatever but it's always like grading because i feel like those cards in that moment like i bought them raw and they're cards i won and there's still so much value in them like that's that's my biggest nightmare it's just the box vanishing while they're off degrading yeah and with it being like you can't replace those literally you can't it would just be a the hunt would start all over again then it would become your life's mission to track down you know and the person who opens the box is like what do i do with this like these are all marked like it's like the paint already exploded all over the dollars the second you open a box of like one of one colts cards it's like there's a very these are very traceable did you did you ever investigate and get a rep a police report on your twenty twenty five lance briggs gold prism not yet two things like one through the e through ebay they're telling me it still could be delivered it's still or last i looked it was still in the window of like it just may be delayed and i'm like no it showed up empty it did that's not the thing problem here someone reached out on instagram and i'm waiting till it's possibly here but another one of those a lance briggs gold went on ebay he bought it and has and offered it to me so there is looks like a positive outcome on the other side that a version of the card will still make it over to me but as of yet i don't have it in hand so but yeah as far as the one that actually got stolen no i need to check into that we had the the flu hit the pac nicholson household pretty hard last week i was on that vacation two weeks ago my daughter of course comes down with the flu while we're on vacation i think she got it at day care right before we left carried it over and then when we got back home last week my wife and i thought we had made it out unscathed like our daughter had started to feel better but yeah last thursday i came down with a fever my wife came down with a fever was brutal all through the weekend feeling better now but kinda had have not been on top of my ebay game in the past week because of that so we'll we'll get we'll get all our ducks in a row over here and there will be justice for the lance briggs thief i love imagining that person though opening up the box and it's like what do i do with this it's a lance briggs gold prism worth twenty five dollars with a specific serial number on it the the next level thief would be like you eventually see the serial number and you see it's at psa and that's what they decided to do they're they went and stole it and they went to get it graded to flip it for like five bucks mhmm yeah i'll be i'll be hunting that and one day it'll show up that happened that happened once i did a private deal with someone where i sent them three cards and they got those got stolen in the mail and i still have saved searches for like those exact card parallel i'm like one day that will show up and i'll i will find bring the person to justice but by then it'll have been you know flipped through so many hands it probably won't be the actual person but we'll have a lead do you have a before we move off of this topic completely i'm glad to see you're full you're fully recovered from your flu like symptoms here do you have a when you are sick do you what what's your what's your game plan like what are you doing like are you just laying there like hoping for time to pass and you get better are you throwing a movie like drinking some stuff and up like what's your protocol well it was tough because like thursday let let's see what happened like i was still kinda working i didn't take off work because i thought i'd be able to truck through it my wife too like she was feeling crummy and we both work remote but i was in like one meeting and it was a brainstorm meeting and i'm like oh i cannot literally can't do it i had a hundred and three degree fever and i was like i i was like i'm done sorry no i was pretty much like in bed thursday and then through through most of friday just yeah i was just down bed our in laws and then my mom took turns taking our daughter and she just kinda had a grandparents weekend so that was great but no i was i feel like my eyes hurt i didn't wanna look at screens so like i wasn't watching a movie but i have gotten into a hole on social media of just i love game of thrones or i'd like you know watched all of game of thrones and i've been watching the new knight of the seven kingdoms and then i feel like my algorithm knows that so they're serving me old game of thrones clips so basically i've essentially watched rewatched all of game of thrones via sixty second clips on my instagram and twitter feeds they just know they're like hey you wanna watch battle of the bastards again here it is and i'm like yep i'll watch this oh that makes me wanna watch red wedding alright let me go find that clip so they got they have game of thrones cards out there they do i started looking i started looking into that there's a there's not i mean there's some sick autos and stuff but yeah we should here's a question on the autos because i see the harry potter ones too are they signed as the character or are they signed as the actor or actress like what's what's the what do you want like what on those types of photos that's now that's a good question so i'm looking and it looks like this jon snow is odd is like a kit harrington signature okay i want the period specific get me the quill get me the the ink dipped quill and give me give me john snow in a nice like thomas jefferson type scroll you know like the the old school signature no ballpoint pen i need the i need the quill but yeah it looks like they're signing the the actor name which isn't my favorite that's not what i want i wanna believe it what what about like on the disney stuff do you want like the daisy duck auto or do you want like well that i can't get behind those who's signing that who's signing that who's signing the daffy duck super fractor auto i don't want like because yeah i i don't care about the person's name but then when i see this this this is these are the good topics that people come to the football card pod expecting to get solved who signs the donald duck on us but yeah no no specific i don't get sick that much so i don't really have like a routine and i feel like once you have a kid like you're always kind of a little sick and you can't just take a full day off so it was kinda like just truck it on and really i was out of commission all of thursday some of friday and then by saturday it was like i gotta be a dad we gotta we gotta find activities i gotta get move get up i don't know if you've watched the new game of thrones but get up i i have not i i'm not much of a tv show guy but everyone everyone raves about it so maybe maybe someday you know i spend all my free time whenever i'm not chasing three kids it my my default is you know old wrestling so i'm i'm like yep i was watching and we we can get on with the show but this is probably worth sharing i i don't know where i put this but maybe it was just text with friends but i was with my oldest jolene and she like came downstairs and i was up early and i was watching on valentine's day i was watching saint valentine's day massacre in your house and the first match was gold dust versus blue dust and this is like vince russo height of attitude just like two minute matches absolute absurdity and my daughter came down and she's like what are you watching daddy i'm like attitude error stuff and she the the like she not only sat she was locked in and she had so many questions as a four year old would if they see saw gold dust in twenty twenty six on her screen and i was just like man this is this is what it's all about like just this is what goldust is and this is who blue dust is and then the booking was hilarious because then the next match was al snow versus hardcore holly in a hardcore match they were literally this was in memphis and they were like literally outside throwing each other in the lake it was just like what a time to be alive al snow al snow is a legend god that i need to go back and watch i do have my algorithm again algorithm my algorithm has been built brick by brick but there's a great just wrestling part of it just attitude era specifically me and a couple buddies like are just always sharing clips and there was a great clip of d'lo brown and his just walkout and god just electric just there were so many good characters in that era dude d lo yes great entrance and just the hidden baseball like catcher gear that was he used for the frog splash and it was like they the the commentators would be like oh my god he's got a foreign object and he would win win all the matches so got nothing but love for d'lo brown great character absolutely alright should we get into these numbers episode thirty six let's go thirty six yeah this was a tough one like instantly top of my head it always goes bears and i was like jonathan owens he's just like a current bears buyer but i'm like that he's not as exciting to talk about so i had to or not as popular as his wife exactly shout out simone biles but thirty six hall of famers jerome bettis leroy butler cal hubbard mike mikalski marion motley steve owen and oj simpson and i was like wait a minute oj simpson is a famous thirty two i don't know and then pro football reference didn't even have oj listed as thirty six but then i searched oj simpson thirty six he's on the cover of sports illustrated wearing a thirty six bills jersey so oj wore thirty six a little bit during his rookie year in buffalo so shout out oj he was a thirty six but what names or numbers jumped out to you brett mine was instantly jerome bettis fun fact when i was growing up playing sports my nickname i was nicknamed by the coaches the bus wow i was a i was a i was a little thick you know so i was you know the bus was i accepted that did you have a an x on your helmet could you run with the ball or did they dude i no the the actually the no i couldn't i was a striper for sure but i was the bus nickname ironically came via basketball i was i don't know if it was just my style or whatever but i i proudly accepted that but jerome bettis is just an awesome player i was infatuated with him and some of my earliest memories as a notre dame football fan were with jerome bettis just so nostalgic thinking about him in a gold helmet being at my you know grandpa's house watching him as a kid so there's a connection and i i actually still have it when he was a rookie i asked for christmas like logo seven athletic jer jersey rams jerome bettis jersey and i got it and i literally still have it in my basement wearing donning thirty six i was looking at some better stats specifically at notre dame so i i've you know i've debated like there's been a lot of debate on jeremiah love who talking combine talking draft like he's when when there's like daniel jeremiah's prospect board like jeremiah love is like one or two like everyone has him very high up which you always see this sometimes like with these like super athletic guys that are gonna translate but might not be in like a premium position i'm very interest like because i love watching him so much i'm very excited to see where jeremiah love lands i don't like that that's a whole another topic but anyone who decides to draft him i'm i'm barring injury i'm fully confident that he is going to be a top three back for a very long time but anyways i'm like this guy's sick jeremiah love he's this last year he had eighteen touchdowns rushing and and but he didn't didn't didn't break the record so jerome bettis holds the record at notre dame for most rushing touchdowns with twenty which is quite the feat and then i looked at his rookie year he had one thousand four hundred and twenty nine yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie year making him the offensive rookie of the year obviously super bowl champion and we remember that like swan song like it was in detroit it was like betis' like final rodeo comeback player of the year he's two time first team all pro one time second team all pro prolific player and so i'm like what i couldn't remember and it was almost like you snapped your fingers and he was on the steelers like growing up i'm like how did he get on the steelers like how why did the rams get rid of jerome bettis so the here's a trade and this happened this time in the draft like draft time so the bus was traded to the steelers with a third round pick in exchange for the steelers' second round and fourth round pick the rams decided to trade jerome bettis because of lawrence phillips they drafted lawrence phillips from nebraska who was supposed to be the best best running back of all time who obviously had a very complicated career and fall from grace but man talk about a terrible trade like just getting rid of jerome bettis who went on to be a hall of fame player but in this process i i was trying to look like what is jerome bettis' highest selling card and so i'm gonna put it up here and it is his this card absolutely kicks ass it's the ninety seven million universe jerome bettis pmg in an eight point five it's sold in september of twenty twenty three for nine thousand nine hundred dollars he's donning steelers gear so this is like right after it but just awesome great player great guy he does hits for notre dame you know during big games he's always on the field just suck that he played for the steelers and the steelers you know obviously is the nemesis for so many other teams in the afc but just an excellent player and as a colts fan i just all will always remember him fumbling the ball nick harper recovering it we've already talked about the rest of his history with that but yeah jerome bettis rules yeah i mean legendary running back but if nick harper stays to the outside bettis' career ends with like that heartbreak he he goes down as a leon let situation yeah bet is oh the bruising back yes make running backs big again give a like i think we talked about there's no more thunder in the league we're going too much lightning and i'm like yeah bring back the bruiser bring back the guy who can't catch i don't want my running back catching balls i want them just going up the gut for three and a half yards a clip march down the field i was looking bettess in his career two hundred catches i'm like christian mccaffrey has that in the last two seasons alone probably it's but he he didn't have to he wasn't there to do that he was there to go in between tackles and get you five yards dude they when it was fourth and short you it was before the tush push you knew that neil o'donnell was gonna hand the ball off to freaking jerome bettis and it worked every time yep a couple other thirty sixes that i needed to shout out so brian westbrook just ultimate i don't even i didn't wanna say gadget guy i think just like hybrid running back almost like ahead of his time with the ability to catch out of the backfield like he was i i guarantee he led the eagles in receiving a couple years because of just they never had a receiver until to and he had a couple years where in o six he had seventy seven catches for six hundred and ninety nine yards in two thousand seven he had ninety catches for seven hundred and seventy one yards that two thousand seven season he also ran for another thirteen hundred and thirty three yards giving him two thousand one hundred and four scrimmage yards twelve touchdowns first team all pro in o seven but seasons before that he still had you know monster yards from scrimmage seasons he had over fifteen hundred in o four he had over nineteen hundred in o six over twelve hundred in o five always loved watching brian westbrook and playing with him in video games just was a great player you have pulled up his o five finest superfractor die cut one of one that thing is sick what'd that sell for seven hundred and fifty dollars oh you're muted brett this thing sold for seven hundred and fifty dollars february six twenty twenty three what does this card go for now at auction oh man i mean like two grand i think i think so yep that's that the rex grossman of this card sold and i missed it i was watching it for a week like years ago and i'll regret that forever here you go here's a recent sale the two thousand seven bowman chrome red refractor psa ten of brian westbrook sold for nine hundred and ninety dollars wow three days ago wow was that part of the big red fanatics red auction it looks like must have been yep that's a sweet looking card thousand buck that's that's a big sale for i mean o seven is his like first team all pro year so there's kind of a cool little some significance there those reds are very cool those are sharp cards i can't put myself in the shoes of an eagles fan and collector but i'm going to try to for a minute and you know those players and those sick cards that come up that might not have the mass appeal but inside of our community and teams as fans we'd pay anything for those cards like i think about like a player like kenny moore or bob sanders like these guys like if they're like super fractor or black friday night came up i'd pay anything i feel like westbrook is one of those guys to eagles fans just so many he was a part of so many winning teams and was highly productive and you know he might not go to the hall of fame but to me he's like an eagles legend yeah he seems like one of those fan favorite type players again i'm not an eagles fan at all but it was still like i like watching this guy this guy is electric this guy is fun i would definitely want his cards if i was an eagles fan some other thirty sixes sean taylor his rookie year shout out rookie sean taylor and then marion motley i had to look up marion motley little vintage football talk fullback and linebacker who played for the cleveland browns he was the leading pass blocker and rusher in the forties and early fifties for the browns and he ended his career with the nfl the current nfl record of five point seven yards a carry for running back just seems like a bruiser who was jim brown before jim brown otto graham even said motley was better than jim brown a better back but like they just didn't run at the volume that they did with brown like motley was the most carries he ever had in a season was a hundred fifty seven and he ran for nine hundred and sixty four yards six point one yards a carry seems like he was just a beast he was also helped like break the color barrier in football him and his teammate bill willis were the first two black players in the nfl so that's pretty sick and at the time they weren't in the nfl they were in like the aafc but they won like a bunch of those league titles behind marion motley so shout and look at that card that looks cool dude he's wearing seventy six he looks like a offensive tackle when he played offensive linemen too that like i feel like he rotated between everything he's playing offensive linemen he's playing running back and then he played some linebacker too he was just i love these guys that were good at everything this card sold the nineteen fifty bowman marion motley psa nine rookie sold on ebay in twenty two for twenty five thousand dollars man that's that's that's and and it was via a fixed price too i just love that man who who else is talking about marion motley i know not nobody nobody else also love he grew he's in the hall of fame and he grew up in canton ohio so he made it back to the hall which is awesome and of course he served he he was often in world war two he was in training for the us navy and while he was there a service team coached by paul brown he started playing for that which i love the thought of that like these guys are all at war paul brown's out there and he's like well if we're we're all out here we're gonna play some football and got to play with or got to coach motley and then following the war he goes back to canton and paul brown is like hey come play for my team in this newly formed aafc pro football league and he just became a cornerstone of the browns so just these these vintage guys have the craziest stories what's disney doing what like disney should be listening to the football card podcast because this should be a a a feature film like make make the marion motley movie i'm i'm here to watch it yep we'll get a spec script going we'll start we'll start shopping it and then nope that was that was it for my thirty sixes that's a good little good little crop way better than i expected yep alright should we get into the three and out let's go alright first down on defense just had a question for you brett there's a couple hobby practices that i've seen over the years and i was just curious your take on these so how do we feel about these two hobby prock practices number one doing preannouncement announcements of cards where it's like i'm posting a crazy card at eight pm eastern and then two posting a looking for this card ebay listing now why these stuck out to me is because i'm fully of the belief do whatever you want in the hobby i really don't care i'm here for the cards but that's where these then come into my realm where they're preventing me from looking at cards like on the one hand i'm flipping through ig stories and i'm like oh here comes an account that is known for posting cool cards and they hit me with the teaser of it no it's not a card but i'm posting a card later i get you know marketing and all that but sometimes i'm like i wish i was looking at the card instead of just talking about the card show me the card same thing with the ebay listings sometimes the save search will pop and i get excited and i clicked in the save search hoping to see a card and i see someone looking for the card and again it took away from me took a an opportunity away to see the card so curious curious your thoughts on those two practices good topic i feel like we could build an entire podcast analyzing the things collectors in this space do and these are two fun ones to dig into i think one of them definitely negatively impacts my experience way more than the other we'll start with the momentum building positioning i've got a massive card coming come check it out i think i'm i you know like i will actually say i'm not gonna say like i love this but i actually don't mind it too much because even if i feel like i when i see the account again i always and i didn't get to see the reveal because i didn't watch the live or i just missed the story post or whatever i if i the next time i see the brand name i go back and look at like what was the card talking about what were they talking about because of the teasing nature of it you know i'm also of the mindset that like these are all of our instagram accounts and we are allowed to publish and produce content how we want to i understand you know we are perspective certainly like i would much rather just see the card but i think it it may be a little adds a little excitement to the mix so that one not doesn't really impact me too much now the the this this practice of posting classified ads to ebay just pisses me off to to not just i can't even it just and it it really drives me crazy the reason why is because and i i wish i could specifically remember the card it was a card that was like a perfect fit for my collection or a card that i would really love i like clicked in the safe search and saw the card and literally thought the card was available until i like actually read further and realized that it was a classified ad and i'm just like man this has gotta be against terms and conditions of ebay like you can't do this so stop doing that like i just the the there it's are trying to trying to take advantage of ebay's massive audience to their own advantage i i will tell you this if i saw a card that was on a classified ad and i saw it being promoted this way and i knew where the card was at and i had information the last thing i would do would contact that person and let them know i wouldn't do it because it drives me crazy so maybe a little harsh maybe a little you know maybe i'm being a little stern on this but let's stop doing that and i know by me saying let's stop that's only going to ignite it and more people are gonna do it but it's not what ebay is for like go build your audience and go get to work like say quit trying to hack the system okay okay couple counterpoints now that i'm thinking about it on the promotional side like the card tees because i the more i think about it i'm like no i kinda do like like the right it all comes down to the card and account and then also the frequency of it like if if you're doing it for every card yes starts to lose its luster okay agree need to instill a cap on that or it's like once a quarter you can tease a big card but if every day it's like i got a card coming and then you yes it better be like the sickest card ever if you're gonna tease it so just just something to keep in mind don't if you if every card is a nuke no cards are nukes you know if every you just gotta you know be mindful with it then on the ebay the classifieds front what would you say to someone who's like i'm exhausting all lanes to find these cards like i've tried i've i've scoured the forums and the message boards and instagram and that has led me nowhere ebay is a gigantic you know marketplace and avenue to finding sellers and buyers this is me being desperate to to finish this run or finish this chase like i i'm exhausting every everything i can to to find these cards if if i were the powers that be at ebay and i saw this stuff happening i would ban the account it's not what it's for like the call to action is like buy it now or bid on card like you post something and it's like my option as a reader is to like bid on card or buy it's not what it's for it's like it's a it's i have not spent time digging through the terms of service but it's gotta be a violation and if i were in charge i'd ban everybody i'm just gonna buy the next one i see hundred thousand dollars dude i've thought about it i've thought about that move i've smash and bend now now by me bending it if that card shows up i get it like that's how that works that's how it works yeah so you have to read yeah they then the new because you want it then the poster of the classified ad now has to actually go find the card and when they do find the card they have to give it up to you because you are the new owner exactly that there we go i think we found i think we solved it oh man alright good good first down yeah okay so i had a crazy dream and we've talked about this game and this is how sick i am sometimes i'm in this nostalgia phase by the way like i was listening to last night on my son was my wife had to like text me turn the music down but i had i had the voice to men the the second album going and i had never heard it on like dolby and did the the my it was hilarious because i always had the music at this level and like you know grunge all types of loud music you know post rock all this stuff and i never get any complaints and the complaint was voice to men and i like overanalyzed it and i was like it's gotta be the baritone it's like that's reverberating throughout the house while my wife's trying to put the kid to bed but what a what an what an album by the way so i'm like in this nostalgia phase just like anything i can see and i've just been in these rabbit holes and one of them is video games i'm getting served up like a lot of video game content like whether it's like this streamer who's like sitting in a his video game room and literally the chat is just like do you have this game and then the person just like goes and like pulls and has the game it that's like a fun p way of content and that's like getting me into like video game nostalgia or there's also like video game shop owner who like is filming all of the deals and stuff that are happening and it's all retro nostalgia stuff trade ins and i'm like this like sign me up to watch this content all day like dreamcast like all this stuff so it's like naturally i had a dream about a video game from my youth and i just remember my childhood home my brother had a super nintendo in his room i had a sega genesis and we would just buy all the sports games on each system and we would play them all night and i've talked about this game but nfl football ninety four starring joe montana for sega genesis like i dreamt of the back cover of this game and in my dream i like i couldn't remember exactly what my dream told me that the back cover looked like but i was like piecing it together and i was like i gotta go check this out so there's actually a copy available via buy it now and i just might buy this and just put it in my office it's six fifty nine get it but here's the back cover let me try to enlarge this here we go there we go so the back cover oh yeah the back cover of this game has let's see here six players you've got and it's such a snapshot of this era it's barry sanders thurman thomas emmett smith derek thomas reggie white and jerry rice and so this is obviously i wanted to like take this moment and put it into this podcast because i was like there's a fit here so i then looked at their i was like when my mind when i saw all this collection of these guys together i was like all of these guys have a pmg green like that's the first thing that came to my mind and this is this is commemorating the ninety three season so that's interesting but i then i decided to look further i was like okay what are their last sales of their pmg green or their first sale excuse me so i'm gonna save the most shocking for the last but so you've got jerry rice greenpmg in twenty two sold for a hundred and fifty k that's monstrous you've got thurman thomas in twenty four selling for one thousand five hundred and twenty six which is like such a great deal you got barry sanders in december of twenty selling for forty eight thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars i must have not pulled the reggie white sale or documented it so it doesn't matter but then the the derek thomas was the card letter pulled from may tenth two thousand eight you could have gotten a derek thomas green pmg for thirty one dollars and eight cents so with all of this information at your disposal like what's your reaction to these players green pmgs these prices so couple things i think i need to take melatonin because that's the only time i have vivid dreams beyond like on a regular night i'm don't dream i don't know if that's a signal of something wrong but i wanna be having dreams like this i wanna be dreaming do it was a sneak attack man i'm i'm i'm the same way typically so that's why it was a little surprising okay this is good i'm thinking a yes you need to buy that six dollars because this just came in the mail from our last episode an nba pencil pack oh god dude i got so many i got so many messages about that in the box still minted box oh it's the back is so good basketball is hot the incredible action the spectacular slam dunks the amazing turnarounds and if you love basketball we've got your pencil nba pencils by pen tech officially licensed so is there a vancouver grizzly pencil in there i'm just trying to place the error well no so this is just the eastern conference oh wow we got the pacers on the end okay and then we got the bulls in here so i feel like you know bulls knicks pacers they're in the nineties this is the this is the hot pack to get yeah i'll i'll track down the western conference eventually but i need it in box now since i have the eastern conference in box so i'm saying just buy it because having this in the office already is enhancing my day to day life and i have a sega genesis so if you buy this come over we can hook up and oh yes live live bin in it yeah what's shipping on that well we'll we'll about to find out oh five bucks shipping that's not bad we're we're doing it twelve bucks that's a that's a buy that you will not regret there we go dude i can't wait to get this game dude i played it so much man that back cover is awesome and but the what couple things got me thinking it would be sick to get red pmgs of them all kinda matches the box like i i could see a display where you have like the box in the center and then three reds flanking each side as far as the sale prices i mean yeah i i don't know what the takeaway there is i guess it's i would have thought we'd see more like the derek thomas selling for thirty one dollars where like you'd see back in the early two thousands some of these sales but maybe like i'm surprised they don't have earlier ones i'm surprised the earliest for these guys is in the early twenty twenties i guess it signals that like these cards just weren't transacting online like that there was the market wasn't there for it kinda like i was listening to your conversation with glen rice cards that where he's talking about nineties cards just weren't at shows until you know that's a more recent development so maybe something something to do with that or a similar situation going on there where you know these cards were getting ripped and just stashed away and your people weren't selling their green pmgs on ebay because they're getting thirty one dollars for them so it's like nope good stuff though here's a question on that and that you've got my brain swirling right now based on what mike talked about with like nineties cards and glenn rice and if you didn't listen to the episode go check that out but he was talking about how like you go to shows and for years you'd not see any nineties rare and scarce parallels and then over the last several years you know at the national you'd have showcase collectors i think of like grant always waldorf stories and just this showcase of just absolute bangers and it's not just him it's other people and so if you wanted to get a grail go to the national you can pick up a grail you couldn't get that before how do you think like this changes like now we're collecting in this era where there's infrastructure there is marketplaces everywhere you've got data from cardladder and i think about like that derek thomas and it's like one sold and then you know if that card were up for auction now i can't imagine what it goes for but there's like years of like no no sales data how do you think that impacts now that we have all this infrastructure there's more transparency like with this era of cards like twenty years from now like how do you think that this changes like is do we not have an opportunity to like go spend thirty one dollars on a card and then it'd be worth you know fifteen thousand dollars you know years later because of all the data do think that helps or hurts kind of our long term outlook on the values of our collection or perceived values of our collection that's interesting like now that everything's so tracked will there be able to be the insane jumps because there's always like a comp to point to mhmm kind of in the more recent term i don't know i think i think you the massive jumps will still be possible because i think there are cards that have had those jumps even with comps okay because it all comes that there are still cards that won't have frequent comps like even with all the technology and all that there's still cards that are numbered to ten numbered to five numbered to one that you know the last time it sold was gonna be ten years ago and there's nothing you can do about it but there'll be definitely more data points to pull from to kinda come to a conclusion of what the actual value is i don't know i go back and forth i love carladder for all the data and all that but yeah i do think the overwhelming amount of data i don't wanna say it's a negative but it's just it is going to affect you know how we value stuff obviously for the next you know for the future forever like they'll always be that so yeah it's it's it's a good segue into third down third down let's go third down according to card ladder's football index the football card category when i did this it was up thirty two percent over the last two years right now it jumped a percentage point so it's up thirty three percent over the last two years wow what do you think the biggest reason for the growth is besides the football card podcast obviously i was looking on this chart when did football card pod start i mean we and there's a claim to make that we're we're driving some of this growth i think there's a couple things i mean the nfl is the most popular sport in america i'd say handily if you look at top fifty broadcasts over the past year nfl games are like thirty to forty of them it's insane how much the nfl owns not only ratings but then just fantasy football sports betting every football is king so i think there's that because like that's nothing new over the past two years like that's not different than five years ago but i think there is a and maybe this is just a personal take i think there's a nba decline currently happening like i think the nba has a little bit of a problem of lack of new superstars like who's after steph katie lebron like yeah there's the ongoing like who's the next face of the nba is it anthony edwards is it tatum is it luca it still seems like no one has come in on the nba front that is like the guy or this new crop seems to lack an identity a little bit compared to the nfl it seems like new quarterbacks have ascended like mahomes allen lamar like that's twenty seventeen twenty eighteen class has mahomes won championships lamar and allen won mvps you know like they're faces of these teams and playing in these huge nfl games whereas in the nba there doesn't seem to be like even from like the twenty eighteen luca and like the tatum class like i guess tatum won a championship but they you see what i'm saying where it's like it doesn't seem like the nba stars the new nba stars are as solidified as the current new nfl stars like the the transition from brady and manning into the new crop feels like it happened and it happened with and there are real nfl players who are living up to that level of like we need the next crop of great quarterbacks to be here and then like on the basketball side is it because do you think it's hindered i i think if you look at the nba like undeniably and analytics support this jokic is the best player in the league one of the greatest players of all time however he's not the most marketable nor does he want to be he just goes out and does his job so i think there's that element to it but do you think the fact that like kd lebron and steph are still in the picture that hinders the ability for the new stars to completely reach their ceiling because if you look at the players you may you know brady was around but you know once brady retired it felt like the momentum for the nfl continued to climb and so i i wonder about that like the the passing of the the baton like that's like really needs to happen in order and and in football it feels very much like you know manning retired brady were all like the old guard kind of all went and brady was the last one but then it was the you have the twenty twenty draft class which was incredible and then you have like obviously mahomes and lamar and allen like there was just a lot of momentum so yeah i don't know that's kind of what what i think about and i think like seeing all these players and these new players obviously people gravitate to rookie cards and that's not the reason they're thirty three percent but i i also think there's just like value it's like people look at the their fan fans they're going to games or they're watching games fantasy all this stuff and then there's like why am i not buying football cards it just feels like the interest with the football card category in terms of not only collecting but just like opportunities for value outside of the insane prices for unproven quarterbacks like everyone stop smashing bin on riley leonard gold prisms for like thousands of dollars like just stop doing it so i can get one in my collection but that's neither here nor there just some thoughts yeah no great points yeah i think those got like the basketball part basketball card podcast talk right here yeah the old guard still being in the league probably does affect it because like i've always been a giant lebron fan i hate seeing what not what he's become but i don't like seeing old lebron like because it's it's evidence of the aging and the like we everyone loves athletes when they go out in their prime because they all it you don't have visuals of them being old and broken down compared to you know their young awesome selves and lebron's still like making plays and stuff but and and then like yeah harden i feel like kind of been harden and durant just being on like the journeyman run over the last few years always changing teams feel like has hurt their like legacies currently i think once everyone retires and the dust settles they'll be looked back at fondly like i remember this happening with iverson when he was like going to the pistons and then he's going to the grizzlies and i was like dude just hang it up like and like no one remembers that now it's all just like sixers iverson oh my god he was awesome like not he never won the big one it's he took he carried that team to the finals and he won game one over the lakers like there's this like oh my god iverson he changed the game all that like durant was like one of the best basketball players i've ever watched but right now it just seems like everyone is sick of durant or hates durant same thing with harden harden's one of the best scores we've ever seen but yeah i think it'll take that old guard fully being gone and then i don't know they're just in the nba the nba and nfl is better when there are like consistent contenders because then you get consistent rematches and storylines and like jordan battling the pistons and then getting through or the celtics lakers like all all of that like mahomes like being back there and like winning multiples even if we don't like it it creates like this identity of the league that like the chiefs are the team to beat in the league the nba has had the like most different champions it like this is the biggest stretch i think in league history where there hasn't been a back to back champion so i don't know i think there's something there too i think if the old guard's gone and one of these young guys like wins back to back then i think it's like okay there this is the league now like but yeah we'll see keep buying your football cards well i wanna see this graph continually continue to go go up but just stay out of my lane please yeah wow shout out to us boosting the market alright we stopped them they're punting they might oh it was a good punt they pinned us it was a coffin kick so oh coffin corner we got work to do oh now maybe that we're pinned next week we're on offense again and we're trying to you know we're working from the shadow of our own end zone and we gotta maybe some conservative play calls or maybe shot play who knows is there anything more intimidating than when your team gets cough and cornered and the team you're playing has an elite pass rusher no no it's the worst i like you'd rather be on defense yeah there's nothing more electric than just a great punt to pin inside the five down at the one when someone makes a great dive and like they go flying in the end zone but the ball doesn't and then they're looking to replay did he was his foot on the line nope it's clean it's great special teams shout out special teams third phase player special teams alright let's get to a little check-in any any nfl thoughts on your mind just the only thing i will say if you by chance are in indianapolis or planning to be in indianapolis and you want the lead make sure you're hanging out by prime forty seven on penn in maryland phenomenal steakhouse i'd highly if you're ever in town like a good one two punch is like hit prime and then go to the pacers game because it's literally like a stone's throw away so but like digging into the media digging into the articles this is where all the business gets done like at prime at the bar you've got this is where you've got coaches like jockeying for like a next coordinator job with someone out like it's a huge networking event so if you wanna see anyone in the nfl prime forty seven great place to eat some steaks there we go shout out prime forty seven sponsor the pod oh i don't know why i wrote this note under nfl check-in but tax season and we were just talking little taxes before we went live and what's what started this was yesterday we were texting talking taxes and got me thinking about just identity theft in general and sharing of information and then i was thinking just how disappointed someone would be stealing my identity where say they steal it and then they get in the weeds they're like alright what do we get you know rubbing their hands all excited and they open up the books it's like he spent how much money on a jay cutler card we're do what where's all the buddy it's all in cards what's going on i'm like i don't want this identity give it back it's like no buddy you signed up for this that that is great someone there's a lot of scams out there be careful i mean i can't even tell you how many voice mails i have on my machine i don't know if this is like small business owner my name on a list but dude the debt relief for irs and all this stuff i'm like what who's calling me like stop calling me let me talk about football cards yeah trust me you don't want this identity you're better off with that find someone else alright let's get into market watch let's talk about some sales i'm excited to talk about this one glad this was on your list i mean had to talk about this josh rosen twenty eighteen green kaboom selling for twenty six thousand four hundred dollars met with outrage i'd say by or i not outrage but i'd say the same skepticism that the cutler finite re received on a more public basis like this is getting this is making news outside of just sports for the ridiculous dollar amount paired with quarterback name that they one might not expect to receive like such a high valued card which i i don't wanna get in the here or there but cutler way better than josh rosen but this is just kind of another example of what called whatever you however you wanna see it but like all time set iconic set or just set that people deem to be as such commanding a crazy price even for a unproductive player because they're chasing the set i believe the buyer is going after all the twenty eighteen green kabooms which is just seems like an insane task when you think about it but if you know why not like if you're a collector and that's what you wanna do and you have the funds to do it go for it but what did you think of this sale so i think first of all i just loved reading the comments and commentary from individuals the most limited and by no means am i saying like this josh rosen should be worth twenty six thousand dollars but i think it's it amazes me how so many commenters don't consider the reason why outside of just the player and their performance like it's like how could a josh rosen card be worth this it's like the individual like it is so like elementary i think to look at sports cards just from the player performance lens like that's not how cards work so that's interesting i also think like and this aligns with like thoughts that i have and i put out an episode on this this week it's like it the hobby is not just one market it's micro markets and there are two axes you've got a financial tier on one and you've got persona type on the other if you think about this car and what we know we have information the information we have is that there's an individual that is trying to build out the twenty eighteen panini kaboom green set which is crazy ridiculous but in order for that individual to do this they're on the financial tier they they have to be all the way or close to the top they are ripe with cash enough to use disposable income to spend twenty six thousand dollars on a josh rosen card that twenty six k on a josh rosen to buy a card to fit into their collection could could mean pennies to this person it it's it's a lot of money to most people but we don't understand the financial situation of the individuals who acquire these cards you pair that with like persona type and it's like this individual is a collector and this is where it gets really deadly when you are a multimillionaire who is a collector you can go do stuff like this and if this were me and i was doing this and dude i would get a bag of popcorn every night and just look at the comments from everyone and just laugh my ass off and just that would be funny to me i just think we it's these sale might seem silly to many people or most people but to the individual who is spending the money like it is essential they need this card i also find it funny and we won't mention any names how many we're we're measuring some things because people love to say well he's not going to build out this kaboom set because i've got this green kaboom like you got that going on too which is like how like like this is what you're doing with your time it's like you wanna you you're so insecure that you need to let people know that you have a piece of this it's just it's been comedy for me i've been sitting on the sidelines just laughing at it and glad you could bring this up but congratulations to the owner of the card because they have twenty six k to spend on a josh rosen they have bought the card and it's going in their collection and i don't think any anything else matters and so i i thought i thought that this is a great card to kick this off with yeah and i also it made me go into the josh rosen rabbit hole which i have a couple interesting findings from the josh rosen rabbit hole first of all like i mean he got the shaft i kinda forgot of he gets drafted tenth overall he struggles his rookie year for sure like not a great rookie year by any means over thirteen games but then they draft kyler murray the next year the cardinals do and he gets shipped off to miami only plays in only starts three games in miami does not have a good three games and he's out of the league which is you know that's kinda crazy that he had sixteen starts in his career before he was like labeled you're done where we we talked about archie manning i've talked about archie manning before in his note like josh rosen got sixteen starts archie manning went thirty and a hundred and people love archie manning so i just think it's it's interesting what happened to josh rosen but i do think he he wasn't good and there was i was reading more i'm like why why did it go wrong and there were you know like effort effort was a red flag like he wasn't putting in the work it's like why wouldn't someone put in the work i didn't realize josh rosen's a nepo baby not just a nepo baby almost like industrial revolution oil magnate nepo baby where his great great great grandfather was joseph wharton who if you've ever heard of like the wharton's business school at penn is like the most prestigious business school in the country and joseph wharton was this industrial magnate he was like instrumental in the development of nickel and zinc at one point he owned like he's producing like seventeen percent of the world's nickel so so josh rosen's doing just fine right now josh rosen's doing just fine but joseph wharton is out here just basically like a rockefeller or a jpmorgan building this entire country has like tens of hundreds of thousands of acres across the country where he owns iron and copper mines and gold mines and then he started buying railroads like joseph wharton was doing some things and he's at like the world's fair in paris winning gold medals for his like findings like he's writing journals and all this shit and then i just love thinking that his great great great grandson is josh rosen who just one of the biggest busts in nfl history maybe so yeah shout out josh rosen and his borton ties and then of course josh rosen as of twenty twenty four is a student at the wharton school at the university of penn because he's just like a investment banker now just run gonna just be running a hedge fund josh rosen is gonna be just fine josh rosen probably has more money than any of these quarterbacks that have gotten these big contracts so did josh rosen bid up this card maybe who knows he he his family has the the means to do it we that is i just love how much time we spent on a josh rosen card that's amazing yep two other sales that caught my eye because one i was watching closely well one is the jackson dart psa ten gold prism twenty twenty five sold for forty eight thousand dollars and then in tandem kinda with that a caleb williams gold prism twenty twenty four bgs nine five so sold for forty eight thousand dollars so yeah i was watching this caleb i didn't i was not going to be able to purchase it but yeah just kinda seeing that those two guys are commanding like that's like mahomes money not quite national guys man these are the national guys and it it pains me because i want to buy caleb williams cards but then i see this and i'm like i don't know if i can buy caleb williams cards so i don't know what did you think about these sales of these young quarterbacks so i've never publicly said this but jackson dart maybe has the coolest name for a young quarterback in the nfl like absolutely that's it's pretty strong i you know it's so hard because you're like when you're like measuring these two obviously i think caleb has caleb is will forever be remembered regardless of what happens after this for bears fans just because of last season so like he's got that going for him where jackson dart has like exciting moments but he also has concussions and like the jury's still out a little bit so i think it's interesting that like the price point's like very similar but yeah i man i think about this sale of this caleb and i'm just like what is that like what what does that make us finite worth right now but then i also think about like these moments that we have as collectors where let's say caleb in his rookie year let let's say or even maybe this year there's like a couple weeks that maybe he struggles a little bit or they're he's not playing he his completion percentage is down because of the narrative and it's like maybe his cards are more affordable but as collectors there's like this element to us where even like those prices probably were still high and it's like we debate with ourselves it's like should should i should i buy this car now even though the price is lower even though it's still high but he's struggling so it's like dude i went through this with anthony richardson it was like like i just can't justify buying his gold prism right now because it's too much and too high and so i had to like find my spot to like get a card just to have in my collection and i just in this game in this era of like young unproven quarterbacks it's really hard to justify the price for me on certain cards but i think with this caleb card like fifty thousand dollars nearly is a ton of money but like if you are like i don't i would bet that this card is not my bet would be like it's probably not a bears fan who got this i hope it is but i don't know he caleb williams is gonna be really hot come national i think that like i don't know at least with caleb like there's you've got this last season to like hold your hat on to regardless of what happened so that's those dynamics i find fascinating yeah it's like he's at least already he took he led the bears to the playoffs they won a playoff game against the packers like it's already kinda solidified himself at least for bears fans but yeah yeah i think the some of those highlight plays and moments also endear him with other just football fans so i just wish it wasn't fifty thousand dollars or i wish i would have bought more caleb cards last year i bought a couple and i love those cards and i wanna buy more caleb cards but it's hard as a fan of football cards i look at this card dramatically different than i looked at the card before this stretch of caleb williams moments like i would probably have seen it and be like oh that's you know as a rookie gold person now to me like it's it's a it's it's like this what could be next mhmm element to this card that it has now i mean he's just he's he's going into year three you know and it's like it's what could be next and i think that mystique and prestige elevates this card in my mind and if i'm looking at a showcase and i'm walking by and i see this card i'm gonna stop i'm gonna recognize it i'm going to remember being on my couch for those wins and like after the like i said to my is this really happening again like and there's like that magic it's how i feel about like the pacers finals run it just kept happening and it's like this is unexplainable and i felt like the comp was the bears of this year to that because it was like how is this continuing to happen so with all of that when you get these feelings and emotions as a fan of football and you see a card like this i don't know it this card to me is more important than the jackson dart full stop based on what we've seen so right if dart in year two leads the giants to the playoffs and like a new york giants home football game and they win a home football game against like the eagles like that you know dart is a legend in new york forever forever and then it's maybe worth fifty thousand dollars but for just off of you know half of a rookie season is is crazy yeah i think too it what was interesting also for me to think about with like the way like caleb they made it they won one playoff game drake may went all the way to the super bowl but having like such a bad super bowl it feels like going into next year drake may is on the downtrend yes and caleb's on the uptrend yes it's like drake may made it farther drake may was second in mvp voting like drake may had the better year but just like the somehow even though the bears lost that game to the rams people still just remember that insane throw and like that like the magic and like the what if like what if he keeps doing this and takes the next step is the prevailing feeling from that game at least for me and seems like from others whereas drake may the prevailing feeling currently is like oh he stunk it up in the playoffs like they the patriots had the easiest schedule you know like all those narratives are still kinda there a little bit to close off on this they say this all the time in wrestling and it applies to sports and sports cards i think and it does not get talked about enough moments matter yep winning of course is always gonna prevail but moments matter the it's the and i attribute this to like my collecting of andrew luck people looked at me crazy when i was buying his stuff post retirement and now i talk andrew luck everyone talks about the comeback yep the chiefs or the comebacks his rookie year and just him slapping player telling guys good hit and all the the legend of luck like caleb williams forever has moments that matter and that are deeply ingrained in our psychology as football fans and collectors and that matters it matters forever and so i just think like we need to consider way more when we're talking about prices and players and should this be worth that and should be this not be worth that like the product matters the player matters but like the moments maybe matter more and caleb williams certainly delivered plenty of those for bears fans and just football fans in general this season yeah i i think about when we talk about like iverson versus duncan where it's like duncan has all the accolades duncan's one of the greatest power forwards of all time but like what's the biggest tim duncan highlight that you can think of off the backboard somewhere yeah like yeah iverson the crossovers crossing mike the step over like just like those moments you know lead to like so much fondness and collectability over the years so it's yeah it is everything's wrestling everything but everything is wrestling but you you hear that getting into the deep of the weeds at analytics and prices and it's like collecting is not about no the analytics of a player and that does not like sure there's signals and opportunity but like it's it's it's the fact that like our brains we're complicated people our brains are have so much going on and it's like when i think about the nfl season last year certainly one of the memories i have are are going to be those caleb william tosses because they were so outrageous so that drives to me that drives the value and the price of stuff like this god i can't wait for next season alright let's fly through these really quick i had to highlight this two thousand twenty five bowman chrome university football diego pavia first super factor one of one auto i'll say this diego pavia great season at vanderbilt obviously was on stage to be a heisman and then made an absolute ass out of himself he is projected probably sixth or seventh round this you know four k for this card it is what it is cool card like i think diego pavia will probably be remembered more as a vanderbilt commodore than whatever team drafts him but yeah i just think like you're starting to see i think some of these big bigger cards that people were holding on the bowman side and we're entering this combine draft season people are starting to put those out there but like i also was contextualizing diego pavia and his outrage not winning the heisman in comments and making a fool out of himself and i was just like you know what diego pavia you're a good player but you're just a poor man's johnny manziel so that that's that's where i'm putting it yeah but i also think this could also if i'm a diehard vanderbilt commodore like yes i can see myself wanting this card because it's like don't care if he flames out in the nfl like vanderbilt has been the doormat of sec forever so like he led them to a winning season and was a finalist in the high you know like and i think it shows how cool these bowman u cards are like if you are a college collector like these are sick cards totally agree we move over to this card's sick we have the two thousand six tops chrome which is one of those tops chrome sets i just never see enough of this is a rookie super fracture one of one of vernon davis such a sick card i love seeing stuff like this that i'd never seen before and talk about like ultimate fantasy tight end plug them in vernon davis get your touchdown from the tight end spot but yeah man vernon davis just a a fun pro very productive awesome to see rookie cards like this one of ones from this era yeah and this year this o six stops chrome the red border they all have that red border and this is built to be a 49ers card yes with the super factor pattern the gold the red this looks awesome this sold for two thousand six hundred and thirty five dollars on ebay the last one we have here is the two thousand eight upper deck exquisite collection eli jersey gold platinum auto one of one selling for two thousand two hundred and thirty two dollars i saw this card saw the gold paint pen just sick presentation game worn patches but yeah man we just we don't talk enough about the upper deck stuff and i think upper deck is a fine manufacturer it's just it's amazing it's not kinda in embedded in the hearts and minds of football collectors but i see ultimate collection stuff i see stuff like this and i'm like you know what there's some cool stuff from this era that card is so sick there's so many cool damn cards out there in the world that i don't know exist and then i'm like wait this is o six does priest holmes have one of these probably not i'm looking at the checklist it's a small checklist for this specific insert but yeah this card this card rules that gold signature is awesome i would want this if i was a giants collector eli collector twenty three hundred dollars too doesn't seem like insane so congrats on that purchase very reasonable fun group of cards to talk about this week yep alright let's get in any collecting updates and we'll get out of here any pickups for you over the past week brett a lot of that and i don't wanna spend a ton of time but i've just been very busy on the prism front shout out to everyone who's sending me leads getting a lot of deals done direct story sales i'm i'm ahead of the game more ahead of the game in terms of my build than i ever have mail's delaying some cards that i've been waiting i did get my alec pierce gold vinyl took a little instagram picture of those yesterday for my story with the gold and the gold vinyl it's been said and i will confirm the gold vinyl from twenty twenty five just hits a little different just very nice with the design you got the swirls just smothering the card it's very sick so i am in the business of buying the the twenty twenty five colts prisms would would really like any leads on finite site that has been an area that i i've struck out i would love to land the alec pierce finite obviously the jonathan taylor but yeah get at me i'm having that's been what i've been doing i've just been been been just sourcing sourcing people sourcing information trying to look at safe searches in ebay but that's what i've been busy with i got one incident that happened we had i didn't even text you about this i wanted to talk about it on the pod but i balked at a card that you'd think i would have smashed ben on but for some reason i just wasn't feeling the call to it even though it quote unquote checks all checks all the boxes so the twenty twelve prism gold alshon jeffrey rookie popped up on ebay six hundred dollars obo fair ask raw raw i offered three hundred they countered three seventy five and i just was like i don't know if i wanna spend four hundred dollars on a alshon jeffery prism gold and like like it wasn't like when i saw the counter i was kinda like hoping they'd decline it and that would be that and when they countered it is the same thing i was just like okay cool it's up to me i don't have to buy this and i'm like why why don't i want this card i should want this card the all i and i was processing it and like an hour later it sold for four hundred i was just trying to unpack why and it came down to two things one i just wanna buy this current bears team right now i knew it i knew that's what it was all my resources in the caleb cards and to me i'm like alright now i have an extra four hundred dollars for caleb cards is how my brain's working right now and two i think like it i had never encountered it because this is the first like twenty twelve rookie goal that i've come across the fact that the rookie layout is different than the veteran base set bugs me like it just it just if it were the same design as like the twenty twelve veteran base card with the rookie badge i'd been that i'd paid more for that but just like the the difference in layout for whatever reason makes it feel like insert or like i'm like this doesn't go with my other cards i don't have any of these other rookies and so i don't know i just it was interesting to me that i had conflicting feelings for something that it's like twenty twelve prism gold rookie bears that should be an instant of a player that i like and collect but instead i just let it go away and i also think it's part of i'm in this collecting thing for a long time i have less thoughts of like i have to get this card now especially something that there's there's ten of like i who knows one might not pop up for years but kinda felt at peace just letting that one go to someone else and maybe one day i'll get one but for now yeah i think i just wanna buy caleb williams cards dude our priority collecting is so seasonal and it's like your season right now is that high you just got off of and that's what you care about like there is i have pit my pin saved searches in ebay and i just go to the search bar and i know like three there's three words that i plug into the box that filters like my right now in this moment the cards that i wanna buy i'll do three searches and if i don't find anything there then i just kinda like maybe if i get some time i'll look at everything later with this those are the priorities and i think our priorities shift a lot the i've heard the rookie twenty twelve feedback from a few people i understand that it to me it doesn't kind of it doesn't impact me that dramatically i would prefer them to look like the vets in just like a rookie badge but yeah maybe that's one the panini team wishes they could take back yeah and i i mean when i see like your whole team set it looks awesome like in completion it looks cool and it's like i don't know it's just that was something that like i was sitting there asking myself i'm like why is this not giving me the feelings why am i not smashing this so we'll see i i also wanna say just to close the loop on this because i got a lot of dms about this it shout out the football card podcast listener who understood my tyler warren situation last week and went and looked at the result and then messaged me like did you get it yes i did get it so i felt very supported from the community after that and i can't wait to get that card in my possession yeah i saw your your rookie soon to be second year tight end was sitting courtside at i think the bowl's game he he was stuffing his face or something i'm like these guys are like they they're already like in in ingrained in like our team's communities and i think that's fun we both will have these awesome tight ends on our squad but yeah it's fun thank you everyone shout out tyler warren i'm glad to own one of your cards yes alright card call out time and yeah congrats on the warren that's such a sick card i would buy the loveland of that same price same so if you got it out there let me know let's make it happen or twenty twenty five prism gold caleb i'm i'm a buyer just putting it out there alright last week we asked to see offensive players of the year and like i said i'm gonna do a better job at shouting out some so i'm looking and some awesome cards that i saw first off andy bye bye baby's cards posted a roundup with just some of the most insane offensive player of the year cards that you'll ever see with like a dan marino rubies jerry rice gem masters barry sanders rubies favre gem masters peyton twenty four carat cmc gold vinyl one of one great great crop there brooklyn berry bright shared his o six finest gold extractor ladanian tomlinson just an unreal card rv sports cards posted as barry sanders grand finale and then i had a couple people message me about grand finales are awesome and i shouldn't disparage them and i to i say to that i say like yeah let me see them in hand i'd i believe it i'm just saying personally they hadn't hit for me yet but even rv sports cards picture of the grand finale had some great shine on it where i was like okay i didn't realize the cards could could glow like that so those cards look great shout out old highway cards posted a derrick henry card on top of some football pencils that's the type of combo we're looking for here at the football card pod shout out old highway cards someone else posted some pencils dev dev collector shared just a big old plastic bin of sports pencils that you share and this week brett i love this suggestion this is the one i've been holding in my holster for a while i wanna see your combine photo cards cards that they often get ripped apart but let's see them all in one fell swoop the you post the card they gotta be guys doing drills at the combine no rookie photoshoot the combine okay i was gonna ask do we wanna open it up to like practice gear or like but combine it's gotta be specifically combine it's gotta be combine and those are those are kinda rare because like that's a its own category within like not wearing full uniform you've got practice jersey red jersey sweatpants but combine you gotta have feel like you they become more prolific in the later years of panini i feel like there's a there's i'm i think we get more than we expect that's my prediction combine photos only instant hundred points for any combine photo and then as always every week any player with thirty six if you share a player a card with thirty six i will repost those and share them and also i had people dming that i couldn't i hadn't reshared to their story their posts and it was because their accounts were private so just saying i try and repost everything but if your account's private and you're tagging the football card pod in your instagram story i can't see it i don't get the the ability to share it so go public like you know let let the world see the cards i don't know but thank you all for listening to the football card pod thank you for sharing your cards to the football card pod on instagram follow us on instagram and we'll see
