The Football Card Podcast #34: Ricky Williams, Super Bowl MVPs, and the $70K Bryce Young Sale
hello and welcome to the football card podcast this is it you made it it's friday and you are listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards i'm your host john aka pat nicholson and with me as always is brett mister stacking slabs himself brett how are you doing i'm well i'm still i think nursing the super bowl hangover from a food perspective mhmm trying to get it all right after i just threw you know little pizza slices wings the dips all those things so i i feel like we're recording this on wednesday so i'm feeling a little bit back to normal but i wish i was in your spot i mean you're you're recording the football card podcast in a new location and i just wanna let the listeners know like there is a lot of dedication that comes to delivering these episode episodes on a weekly basis to all of you because john is supposed to be on vacation but instead he's he's sitting in bed and talking football cards with me so everybody if you get a chance make sure you're following him at pac nicholson but shoot him a dm and just say thanks for the dedication people don't see you know what goes into this the the ten thousand hours behind the the football card pod the you know the podding from a bed in beautiful fort myers florida it's it's tough out here i appreciate all the all the support you don't need the sun all day so you can spend a little bit inside and talk cards is there when you're on vacation like is there anything special you do like do you go when you go to the grocery store when you're loading up do you get something different do you have change in your routine a little bit like what what stands out to you when you're on vacation that you don't maybe normally do when you're back in the real world that's that's tough i can't this this trip's a little different it's my wife our daughter and then a couple our friends who they are expecting so we have four adults one child which is a nice it's nice of them to invite us with our child to join in an adult vacation i don't know i'm still yesterday was just a travel day of waking up early driving to the airport picking our friends up flying with a toddler having to maneuver a seat change i wasn't able to get three seats next to each other on southwest so i had to get i got like a window in a middle for my wife and daughter and because that aisle seat was taken but then i got an aisle seat two rows back because i'm like alright if i'm gonna try and offer a trade to someone for a seat i need to i gotta give them a comp i gotta give them an aisle seat i can't just buy a middle seat and be like hey can you give this up and go switch to a middle it's like no i have to so i had to yeah this guy who was like sitting down i had to go up to him and hey here's the whole thing but as soon as he saw it was also an aisle seat and just two rows back he agreed so a successful trade on this trip already and then yeah i don't honestly my wife and the other lady here they preordered groceries so we picked up a rental car we scooped groceries i don't know i just like to try and be offline i mean i love reporting the football card pod but then it's getting the phone off man just being away from the phone is always a goal but then it's hard because then my daughter does something cute i wanna take a picture or then i wanna check a safe search so you know you can never fully escape it but no real special vacation routines do you have any you know it feels like it's been forever since i've been on vacation at this point but maybe you know when i'm i we we have moved to the order groceries ahead so basically when we pull up they're there try to time that right my strategy there is always like try to get some sort of chips or dessert that i wouldn't normally consume while i'm at home so that's typically it but yeah man i'm glad you're here with us talking football cards i i we we've gone almost five minutes without saying anything so i feel obligated but i just wanna congratulate the seattle seahawks for their second super bowl what a playoff run it was about the defense the whole time and then in that super bowl matchup it was the defense and i don't we're gonna talk about it more in the episode relating with cards kenneth kenneth walker third don't wanna take anything away from him but i really wish they would have just given the mvp to the entire defense i know they probably can't do that but it's been a while that since i've seen such a dominant performance by one unit and seattle's a passionate city they love their seahawks i think about the maneuvering from a gm perspective new coach the quarterback decisions the free agency the hitting and draft and it's just like a case study of like everything that you need to have happen to win a super bowl in this era and not having the elite level quarterback nothing saying taking away from sam darnold very very good quarterback and a whole another storyline and i'm very happy for him but man well run organization they were the best team and that defense was so sick yeah that what are some other recent defenses that have won championships the eagle i think about the eagles and what they did to mahomes and it was like agree yeah it's almost even that's like close but like jalen hurts and sam darnold you can probably put them around on the same level but it the the story of that game too was kinda defense but i feel like we had a fall off after that so we've had some recent ones yeah i was thinking of broncos with manning's last ride like that was like and like legion of boom right before that when they beat manning like those were dominant dominant defenses i guess and like defenses that were known as being like the best defense like all season because i think of them the patriots when they beat the rams like thirteen to three that was a great super bowl defensive performance but i can't remember if all year it was the patriots defenses you know number one across the board no that way that game stunk though it was terrible it was so boring not great for squares either there's lots of weird weird numbers happening but or betting or betting in general in general yeah except and this is so i opened up my draftkings sportsbook app to the like touchdown score thing and i let my two year old daughter i was just like just click the screen like i'm throwing five on anything and she as a gambler is now one and o she picked aj barner first touchdown you're kidding me it was like five bucks to win like seventy it was awesome when and and it didn't hit till the third quarter it like the first touchdown it would because it was like nine zero it was forever going on i was like this barner bet's still alive let's go and then it hit it was amazing so daughter a gambling prodigy at two and a half i don't know i don't know if i just incriminate myself if that's any sort of illegal they're starting to integrate the fanduel and draftkings commercials in episodes of bluey now yeah we're not far from that anyways yeah uh-huh that's great alright should we get into it episode thirty four but thirty four is not possible without our wonderful sponsors there's nobody else they're the only ones they are the ones and i was looking at my window before we hit record and it's just hundreds of cardladder tabs so driving the experience so many cardladder tabs and i dude i was thinking about this before and they're so we talk about cardladder all the time but the can you remember before cardladder when you were like going on ebay and like oh going to sold yeah double filled sold listings ended and just like see that was such a pain in the ass and i don't know like one of the use case one of the million use cases is just like the content we've talked about this just like it's a repository of pictures of amazing cards that have sold and we're gonna talk about them so shout out cardladder shout out cardladder alright episode thirty four we've had some great numbers lately and we talked about what thirty two was maybe a goat number goat running back number but thirty four is right here hall of famers walter payton earl campbell thurman thomas joe perry i saw frank o'harris on here but frank o'harris is kind of the this is the last year prism thirty four he was only thirty four for one year the very end of his career okay it was yeah beyond that he was wait what was he last episode that we talked about old franco yeah no he was thirty two his entire career with pittsburgh and then he was thirty four for one year on seattle he played six games on seattle so that would a hundred percent be his prism card this year if he would if he were to have one can you imagine opening a pack and seeing a frank o'hara seahawks card in there oh well so i have one more on that last year prism front that popped up into a safe search and then i had to look up archie manning on the oilers is in prism that's amazing i was like when was he on the oilers and sure enough he played eight games on the houston oilers o and eight just of course go with o and eight and then archie manning's record in his career how bad thirty five wins one hundred and one losses and three ties i even googled i chat gpt i was like why did the saints continue to start archie banning like what why weren't they like this isn't working and apparently he was still just considered an electric quarterback and athlete who was held back by a poor supporting cast and team but i'm like can you use that excuse for ten years i don't know archie's stats are are rough but yeah shout out archie manning legendary houston oiler yeah love love that for sure and i mean you mentioned earl campbell so it kinda it's on the oiler wavelength yeah what well i'll i'll run through a couple little tidbits about these players i was just coming up with earl campbell unreal three year run to start his career but then kind of fell off in his overall stats like there's some other players who like priest holmes has better career stats than earl campbell fred taylor better career stats than earl campbell makes me wonder why earl got in and i don't know if it's because started his career with three straight first team all pros three straight offensive players of the year and an mvp in there like the most stacked probably three year start to a career you could have and i said one mvp but then the other two years he finished second in mvp so just kind of clearly the most dominant running back to ever start a career we're looking at his rookie card his seventy nine tops this sold during the pandemic for nineteen k february sixth twenty twenty one which is the highest selling card it's a pop thirty and just under that is for eighteen k you've got his twenty twenty five absolute kaboom vertical grain selling for eighteen thousand dollars via best offer so how about that classic rookie card but chasing that classic rookie card at on the leaderboard is the vertical green kaboom and i'll say this john i'm not trying to but these vertical green kabooms like these one of ones these have to be the most available publicized one of ones of all times because at this point twenty twenty five i feel like i've seen all of them yeah how big is this checklist even i feel like i keep seeing them and then there's horizontal ones too right doesn't everyone right i don't know if everyone has one and then there's the purples that are also sell for tens of thousands of dollars so they're at least rare enough to garner that type of price like i i do think they're low pop players only have at least one or two graded so far on the purple front but yeah kabooms are crazy earl campbell i also wanna say i have to apologize thurman thomas i wasn't familiar with your game i mean i knew he was a hall of fame running back but he put together like he had a four year stretch where he led the league in scrimmage yards from eighty nine to ninety two and he had nineteen hundred scrimmage yards eighteen two thousand twenty one hundred all with double digit touchdowns won an mvp couple time first team all pro i just didn't realize he his four year stretch was that dominant and i love when a running back puts together a stretch like that so shout out thurman what thirty fours jumped out to you brett yeah i wanna say something about thirty thurman thomas real quick so i think thurman thomas is the product of being a phenomenal running back but just in a era of a lot of phenomenal running backs and when you think about the nineties you think about emmett smith and barry sanders and you don't think about thurman thomas but thurman thomas as you alluded to output is pretty strong but what's crazy is i'm looking at this january fifth twenty twenty five was the highest selling thurman thomas card of all time which is his metal universe ninety seven pmg green for nine thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars and dude that just seems like a very low number for a green pmg and i know there's fifteen copies but someone like thurman thomas so i'd that that buy seems like a pretty pretty strong buy for whoever got this copy about a year ago yeah that's sick those uniforms are so cool the red helmet with the charging bill also thirty four i mean i know i mentioned him but i just wanna make sure he gets his love sweetness walter payton growing up my dad just always talked about the eighty five bears walter payton like just a legend ended his career as the all time rushing leader later broken by emmett smith but five time first team all pro an mvp super bowl champ just i mean arguably one of the greatest running backs of all time so shout out sweetness i you know for as great of a player all time great as walter payton was i am all my i have a piece of my heart always goes out to the guys who are football players who crossover in professional wrestling and we see walter payton hanging out with razor ramon rip both razor aka scott hall and walter payton i hopefully they're they're planning out a match in heaven but i just love that like how cool is that walter payton one of the best players of all time and he's like you know what i'm gonna get involved in this wrestling a little bit i love that wow yeah they cut promos together i'll get one of those in the instagram carousel for for episode awesome we you know for all these great all time greats when this was presented the first player that came to my mind was ricky williams and maybe it was a product of me bringing up ricky williams when we were talking about edger and james same draft class but just such a phenomenon i i think about the hype he had going into that ninety nine draft and just what i love about ricky williams is not necessarily his sick runs but just he was a one of a kind didn't didn't care what anyone else think he loved smoking dope he loved astrology he built a brand for himself so i did a little research on the timeline so he tested positive for marijuana in december of two thousand three and faced a six hundred and fifty k fine or a four game suspension and a four game suspension he was rumored to have failed this be his third test which is crazy like in two thousand three it's like oh i don't even think they test for marijuana in the nfl anymore and so he decided to retire and he went to go study aruvida which is an ancient indian system of holistic medicine at some university and in that year that he retired the dolphins then finished four and twelve and he then made his return to the dolphins in two thousand five so he goes ninety nine to o one saints which in my mind it seemed like he had a longer stretch with new orleans he didn't ninety nine to o one o two o three dolphins and then took a year off goes o five back to the dolphins then he goes and plays for the toronto argonauts in the cfl in two thousand six back to the dolphins two thousand seven to two thousand ten caps it off with a ravens appearance in eleven first team all pro in o two just such a six season nfl rushing seed leader in o two heisman trophy winner ricky freaking williams and here is his highest selling card of all time the twenty twenty one flawless ricky williams pat shield patch auto platinum one of one auto ten and you can see a full equipment shield patch on this thing it's sold for two thousand four hundred and fifty nine dollars in may of twenty four ricky williams how you doing that card is sick that card's so sick yes that's a deal too i think in yeah it's twenty isn't this dude isn't this this is like the basketball logoman out of you know a premier product like to me the presentation of this great image equipment shield great autograph elegance and flawless in that design this card man kicks ass i saw this and i was like this this kicks ass and also man it seems very affordable based on what shields go for today and what's happening in other categories yeah i love the equipment shields too those are far and away my favorite the most nostalgic i assume that's game worn based on the has to be book of it the era of it that's awesome good goodbye whoever got that for what was it like twenty twenty five hundred yeah twenty five hundred ago yeah that card rules ricky williams too that trade like a couple things you mentioned it a couple episodes ago on thirty two the colts taking edger in over ricky and i kinda forgot about that because in my mind the saints traded all their draft picks to get ricky williams that's a move you make for the best running back or like for a first overall pick and i was like oh wait no they did all that just for the fifth overall pick to draft like the second running back off the board it's crazy and yeah the the saints traded away every pick in the entire ninety nine draft plus a couple other picks your first round and second and third round pick in the two thousand draft to get ricky williams and then mike ditka the coach at the time on the cover of espn magazine in the wedding dress that's another when ricky's in the wedding dress all time just childhood i just remember seeing that image like you know because then when it wasn't working out they would like show that image i feel like constantly on sportscenter it was a definitely a talking point but yeah what a crazy crazy trade crazy career but always seemed like the coolest guy ricky williams and that run ricky run year was one of the most electric running back seasons ever especially like the second half of the season he like caught fire his game log from that second half of the year is insane he was just going off awesome awesome player the ditka of it all you said wedding dress i think about that press conference shot where he's wear ditka's wearing the dreadlocks of course that's why it only lasted one year oh my god alright that there's another one i gotta get in the carousel yeah so it's so perfect i before as we close it out on ricky williams and i've never heard anyone talk about it but me digging into ricky williams and understanding him a little bit more and through the research of this episode ricky williams walked so a player like aaron foster could run you know it's just like aaron foster was a unique guy like one of a kind great player but i feel like ricky was like i'm just gonna be myself and players like aaron foster in later years were like did you see ricky williams like that o two year like dude was just smoking some weed studying astrology and just breaking you know the the winning the rushing title it's like i can do that too so i i there's a connection there i think in terms of the the road that ricky williams paved for players like foster for sure and as a marijuana advocate too he paved some roads there too like he sure did i mean he got it was like such a taboo thing at the time you know like he was he had to retire then dude it's nuts it's crazy looking back on it now we're smoking a little weed and and i do love that he kinda had his renaissance in when he was in miami in o five like the wildcat years or maybe it was no two thousand nine he had thirteen hundred yards and thirteen touchdowns for the dolphins in two thousand nine so kinda had his like went through all this stuff and like i'm pretty sure he was on that team he had like the wildcat team when they beat the patriots they like blew them out and everyone was like oh my god this is the future of nfl with like ronnie brown ricky was on that team and a productive member of that team so ricky williams in his career twelve thousand six hundred and fifteen scrimmage yards seventy four touchdowns twelve thousand that's insane i was just saying who was it earl campbell's career stats were a little underwhelming earl campbell's total career scrimmage yards ten thousand two hundred look at that seventy four touchdowns so ricky and earl exact same amount of total touchdowns but ricky with two thousand four hundred extra yards in less games played like but ricky they'll they'll never let ricky in the hall because he was smoking some blunts they don't they don't like that roger doesn't like that i i talked about all of those years you go back to ninety nine and then the last year eleven with the ravens and everything in between how in the hell is it possible and i dude we could spend the rest of this time talking about ricky williams that's how interested i am on him how is his highest selling card of all time only twenty five hundred dollars how does that make any sense that's great especially ninety nine like he's got a gem masters out there you would think that would have surfaced and sold at some point for a lot of money i mean it is he just meant like ninety nine's a tough year like he doesn't have a ton of you know there's not great two thousand like the year two thousand for sports cards that's another episode like outside of bowman and like brady there's just not they're doing some weight finding two thousand two thousand one yeah i don't know that's i'm glad you brought up that sale because and his second highest is also just a flawless horizontal patch auto so i'm trying to even find okay his he had a pmg a ninety nine pmg that sold for two thousand longhorns uniform in the longhorns uniform sold for two grand in july of last year so that gem masters would be a very big card he has a ninety nine credentials psa ten that sold for two thousand april of last year i bet if some of those cards surface again maybe just based on the market they would go for higher i don't know if like ricky williams' sentiment is up there oh and then we got a twenty twenty five optic downtown black pandora out of twenty five selling for seventeen fifty i don't get the black pandora's out of twenty five i they're the so much stupidest sales of all time it is a repack filler stupid cards i'm don't wanna be blunt but they make zero sense in every way you cut it stupid they look cool but twenty like no i don't know but this card doesn't even look that cool it's like in black and white so is that like a variation dude i hate seeing them at the top of these players' lists nothing about them makes sense they i just wanna kick them back down it's like just because some repacker bought this card we have to talk about it now that's not fair just because some repacker set a comp at seventeen fifty does not mean it's now a two thousand dollar chase card for your repack shout out ricky williams there's a lot way his sentiment is going up after this everybody out there is being like looking at the ricky williams cards this is what we do here we help guys out like ricky williams be like alright let's look at these guys you know yeah i have one and his dolphin stuff is also very hard to find i have his o two finest gold refractor it's one of my favorite cards in the dolphins uni but then like once the weed stuff happened they just left him out of sets like he wasn't in o four o five o six finest because he's like in and out of the league i think he's i feel like he has like a bowman chrome in like o nine like that's he has like a super but he yeah he just wasn't also in a ton of sets in his dolphins uniform so that's just another wrinkle in there but shout out to williams to me a great way to increase your collectability in twenty twenty six is if you are seen in a photo in cancun on vacation smoking a blunt that's gonna draw people be like oh he's kinda like me like i know he plays football but he kinda does what i do recreationally so it's interesting how much times have changed yeah it's like wait he can smoke weed and still be a productive nfl back that there's still a chance for me maybe one i could still go pro one day oh baby good good ricky williams chat shout out ricky run ricky run alright three and out let's get into some topics yes so i saw this card in going through the sales and it is the twenty twenty two absolute we're entering the kaboom room which is a rookie kenneth walker the third kaboom vertical green one of one psa nine this card sold for eighteen thousand six hundred dollars the night of the super bowl so imagine having this card running and the guy ends up winning the super bowl mvp they say you can't time the market but this looks like the perfect timing of the market my question to you and i'm imagining i have no idea who owned this card but to to run a card like this ending on the super bowl there's gotta be some some some gambling blood in that individuals what what what is your i guess what are your thoughts on just like the sale and all the stars aligning on this and then what do you think the proceeds from from the sale of this card what do you think this this seller is gonna do with that money oh buy some black pandora downtowns ten of them i mean this card is cool i again i like i like these cards eighteen k is crazy i think i feel like i saw something comparing this with like his finite and his finite also sell okay his finite sold in january but that's like a black like again a variation one for twenty eight hundred dollars or twenty seven sixty where is it okay his rookie black finite no way okay that's chronicles sorry i know this is great radio me just reacting to what i'm seeing on card letter but there's a twenty twenty two chronicles black finite kenneth walker with an ip auto on it what this is with like a lime green ip auto on the card and now i know people don't like chronicles but just any finite getting a ip auto on it is tough to see especially a rookie card for a super bowl mvp yeah as far as this auction running and the timing of it though yeah that's insane that they had an end in the super bowl he wins mvp and not only that timing but the green kaboom timing like everything that's happening with those definitely the highest sale you could have for this card i would say until if he has a no this will this will be the highest even if he because he's a free agent now if he goes to another team i still think like winning super bowl mvp the card being your rookie card in the jersey of the team you're winning the mvp for that takes that's number one so congrats to the seller i mean that's crazy yeah the the so i was thinking about this and these auctions end at ten pm eastern so that that decision was that that was that solidified at that before the auction ended to that he was the super bowl mvp wait you said it ended when i those this was in the weekly so it ended before extended it ended at ten ten i just i'm curious if the final bids knew that he was the super bowl mvp or not well i think by halftime he was like a heavy favorite he was i remember looking it up live at some point early on and he was like minus one sixty or minus two hundred so i would say i would i would wager that whoever was bidding kind of it it seemed that he was gonna win the super bowl mvp by ten o'clock i'd say so i bet that was on their mind i'm i'm a big fan of the super bowl mvps that don't go to quarterbacks when that happens and the this was one of those games where the more it went on the more you just knew it was not going to a quarterback and there was some intrigue there you know there's some arguments made i mentioned the defense which they're not gonna give it to everyone but you know there there's an argument that could have been made for jason myers and his performance and what he did but yeah i i they they they always just seem like little outliers when they're not quarterbacks and i appreciate that yes so of the super bowl mvps thirty four have been quarterbacks eight have been wide receivers eight have been running backs four linebackers two defensive ends two safeties one cornerback one defensive tackle and one kick returner punt returner that had was desmond howard larry drew the cornerback cowboys no i don't have i just have a chart that shows so cornerback yeah ninety six that would have been cowboy show there's something we could do here with this list that we should at some point this yeah that would be fun this is fun yeah shout out super bowl mvps non quarterback super bowl mvp i but to your point like yeah when the team defense is so dominant you wish that the whole defense could get awarded a super bowl mvp somehow this is a perfect segue into the second down and so if you're a seahawks fan we're just basking in your glory with more seahawks card content but they say defense wins championships and after their two two thousand thirteen super bowl win panini followed up in twenty fourteen prism with the only faction in the set and it's the legion of boom conglomerate that was a part of twenty fourteen prism i've got the card up on the screen it is it i see this card and see all of the dudes in this time and it makes me be like man i wish prism would have done more of this so they've got the legion of boom in twenty fourteen prism obviously the the dark side this this group has created their own identity and before i do that look at these legion of boom the gold sales here there's it's sold in fourteen and seventeen for a hundred and ten dollars and a hundred and seven dollars can you imagine what the legion of boom gold or black finite would do today if that went to market that would be awesome i would love to watch that what a name legion of boom i like the dark side too dude yeah the dark side is sick legion of boom though just i mean it's like everyone knows what it is you know what i mean like to have them be that dominant for that long to have for your defense to have a sick nickname and to own up live up to the like those expectations and that hype win a super bowl with it that's awesome how about seattle though their two super bowl wins were defined by these two defenses is seattle is seattle the defensive town is it the town where defense wins championships is it the definition it must be it's insane that they won the super bowl again like with i don't know i just i remember when the bears lost the colts i was like okay the bears will be back though i'll see an i will see a bears super bowl in my lifetime and now i'm like time's running out it's been twenty years and they haven't even been back seattle in that same time has built up two separate teams that have gone on to win the super bowl among other teams and dynasties happening in that time frame but it is i always ever since i asked the question of like would you trade take one super bowl from your team over you know know the next thirty years or whatever that was and you were like yes absolutely i don't know when i'll ever get back more and more i'm like i just need one i need to see one in my lifetime so badly so i'm very jealous of any team that has not only figured out how to win one but then how to retool and do it again with sam darnold so gino smith was their quarterback last year yeah like they weren't supposed to do this this year and they did you know what's my saving grace is obviously you've got the sam darnold of it all in the reincarnation and there's something similar going on with hopefully a healthy daniel jones in indianapolis but i keep hearing like seattle wins their second super bowl and i'm as every time i hear that i'm like you know like it would be great if one year when i'm alive they i got that statement indianapolis wins their second super bowl so like that was like my holding on to hope it's like if if i can just get one more in my lifetime so it makes you hungry as a fan after you see a team that maybe shouldn't be expected to have won it when it i think it's fun and i remember listening to like mina kimes at the beginning of the season she's a seahawks fan and she was like sneaky like she'd be on doing spots everywhere she'd she'd she'd say like i know i'm a homer here but look out for the seahawks like i've been talking to everyone like looking at their team and i remember being like really the seahawks and here they are super bowl champions yeah and i know darnold didn't have maybe like he i feel like played a solid super bowl but more and more i think that nfc championship game will just be looked back as a all time classic and like darnold played an incredible game stafford played an incredible game but like feels like it might have been the super bowl in a in a sense of yes that game was awesome that game had everything and the super bowl yeah the patriots just did not look yeah does drake may stink i don't know yeah there's a lot there and i don't wanna jump to any conclusions but i i saw a stat worst i it was his worst some some quarterback stat like the worst run ever i wish i could think about it or think of what it was but yeah it wasn't a great playoff run for drake may and we can talk more about that but let's i never got to the question so here it feels like darkseid needs some representation a la legion of boom twenty fourteen prism is there anything like what can tops do to make up for this because panini is done and this won't be a thing can they do something to represent this ferocious group of defenders on a football card that would be cool to see yeah like i mean i guess just copy panini do a do a group shot card but i would like to see that for other teams you know like even i guess they kinda do that with downtowns or like the dual things but i i guess i'm thinking specifically of having nicknames on there like prism card that says legion of boom on there is cool like i was thinking lyons like sonic and knuckles montgomery and gibbs like a cool dual card of them that says sonic and knuckles in some cool text font or something and maybe some other notable nicknames that escape me right now but no doing some sort of card about the defense i think would be very cool i mean topps used to do that back in the day like i know there's like a bears defense team card out there from some early topps release and yeah bring back more more team focused cards or group focused cards third down third down it's the off season we're here who is the twenty twenty six face of quarterback liquidity comes the national who is going to be shoved in our face because of all the upside potential i've got a couple players on my mind i'd love to hear what you have to say i don't know if it's biased but i feel like caleb williams is going to have a lot of hype next season just seems like he had a good sophomore campaign and put a lot of people on notice that there is potential there and like alright now you're in your second year of this new head coach in offense like things are a little more familiar you have something to build on i do think he has a lot of momentum i think drake may just went to a super bowl he will also have a lot of momentum i mean there won't probably be cards for him yet but fernando mendoza is going to have a ton of hype when he when those cards hit the market i don't know like is darnold i don't think darnold's really gonna have it's so crazy that that you can go out and win fourteen games year after year and win a super bowl and it just feels like that whatever that we define hype as he's isn't there he's stuck forever because the reason they won the super bowl in the super bowl is because of the defense so yeah that'll but it's i i hear that but then i think of like jalen hurts when they won the super bowl the other year and yes their defense was dominant but he had like he had a really good numbers in that super bowl win over the chiefs including like the dagger throw like he had an all time touchdown in the super bowl moment and it still felt like he didn't shake the like you know whatever people not fully wanting to believe in jalen hurts when you when you give collectors a reason to consider if i just replace the quarterback with someone else could they still do what they're doing or do it better whenever there's that mystery of doubt i that's a limitation i the as as i as i look at it i think what's also interesting is you mentioned a bunch of players and i think caleb is a great one i would say out of everyone you said i will align with there's gonna especially in chicago there's gonna be caleb williams cards galore and they're gonna be selling for a lot based on what he did two players that came to my mind and i again i'm drafting off of this potential i think number one we'll we'll go back to the bo knicks well again and mostly because he wasn't there in the afc championship yeah since he was absent i think that will get people more interested in investing in boone knicks again and then the other one i think is jackson dart and i think it's jackson dart because first of all got your boy matt nagy as a offensive coordinator but when he wasn't concussed he was exciting and so excitement leads to collectability but then also like he was exciting the whole year without malik nabors and malik nabors coming back like investors are going to have this like picture of like what they think is possible with dart and neighbors and the new regime in new york so i think we're gonna be i think we'll be all the players we talked about i think we're gonna be seeing a lot of their cards sell and they'll be in a ton of showcases at the national yeah dart dart is probably number one i feel like even like new york and just yeah neighbors coming back all those reasons yeah that wait harbaugh too right do we yeah jim harbaugh we didn't even mention him yeah like the giants are gonna have a ton of hype shador i don't know but he would be another that i'm sure we'll see a lot of at the national i i left him off the list like intentionally because i feel like it's just understood you know yes i don't know anyone else i i feel like stafford continue like this year even though he didn't win winning an mvp kinda solidifies him as a safe like forever type quarterback prospect to buy you know like i feel like he raised his floor by winning an mvp yes and that will he made his announcement that he's going to be back when he accepted the mvp which i think is cool and it's good for him it's like look at the team you are almost just there again and they're loaded they're bringing everyone back so i'm i'm a fan of watching stafford play ball so i'm glad he's coming back yeah i like watching the old veteran quarterback who again like you when you've been in the league for fifteen years like you have something that no one else can have like you have fifteen years of experience of diagnosing defenses and when like when a player like that is just cooking and you can see that they can see every play before it happens it's so fun to watch and we were spoiled for a long time being able to see brady and payton do that so when you there's someone like stafford it's definitely worth watching and like to his credit he's the only one who could score points on seattle all year like both all the games against the seahawks they you know he could do it so yeah shout out mvp matt stafford i think we we stopped them great merck i also like wanna add this because i got some comments on this we did if you are looking to get into the pro football hall of fame get at us before we record because we are very good at willing players into the hall of fame as we did roger craig we gave him the platform featured him and then a couple nights later what do you know roger craig is in the hall of fame so we can do that for your guy next season this time you can email us in advance we'll talk about what that arrangement will look like but just wanna congratulate roger craig great career but you know the football card podcast might have helped get you over the hump wow or should we start doing content where we kinda we go knocking on doors of players before not to let them know that they're in the hall but to let them know that we're gonna talk about them on the football we're like hey who are you guys we just wanna congratulate you we're about to do a whole feature next episode maybe maybe the stars maybe the stars will align and this time next year when we're on episode eighty seven i can go find reggie wayne's condo here in india you and i can do a bit with him i'm sure he'd love that yeah we're just in his house when he walks in just be terrified i'll bring the finite yeah look your finite oh alright anything i was gonna ask you i know team talk it's the off season there's a lot going on but we wanted to ask you did you get your credentials yet for the football card podcast at the combine have you have you wow wanted the table and get get those so we can do a live recording i'll look into that let's apply see if we can get some press passes i know some people in the office let's see what we can make happen we should go one day at least just i've never been i've still never been and it's here every year i'd watch some some forties i'd watch some something i took my i took my family last year and we went on saturday for the early session and we parked in like a gravel pit be behind lucas oil and you would have thought it it was like people walking into the indy five hundred it droves people to watch guys run around everyone's in a jersey of a different team like every team represented and i was just like i had like the snapshot in my mind looking out and seeing like a hundred jerseys all from different teams and it was the signal to me that was man look at how powerful the nfl is you've got on a saturday people from all over the country here to watch guys run around in a shirt and shorts on the field it's amazing that's how sick we are as fans because like that just the combine it's nothing but it offers me a chance to see the chicago bears in a professional setting like making decisions or making evaluations and it's like alright we're progressing we are making our way towards next season so yeah i gotta go i gotta get get in there one day alright marketwatch marketwatch brought to you by our good friends at cardladder am assuming these are your sales i saw some notes for you that you wanted to talk about the first one is a pop one ben roethlisberger twenty eleven psa ten mosaic refractor out of ten selling with mc sports cards on ebay for seven hundred and forty eight dollars and eighty eight cents what do you think of the sale i had dropped this one in there and then a larry fitzgerald two thousand ten finest i was just surprised i guess that larry outsold big ben larry in a nine big ben in a psa ten is it just because ben rothenberg kind of a bad human being do you think that's that's what's holding him back because the guy won two super bowls and had some you know big numbers but yeah i don't know i was just it was interesting to me to see larry in a lower grade outsell a big ben psa ten i didn't know if you had any observations or thoughts my first observation was i was surprised and granted i don't look at this stuff every day i was surprised that these cards both sold for under a thousand dollars mhmm that was an observation to me which was a signal of man like to me as a collector this would if a guy another guy i was interested in or a guy i like i just wanted to buy a card to hold for a minute cards are beautiful that it these it might be a good time to buy these cards so again like i think you'd see this larry fitzgerald sold in a story sale and the list price would be two twenty five hundred dollars and then at auction here it sells for nine hundred and sixty dollars mhmm i just think that's interesting like if if i saw someone selling this fits for twenty five hundred obo i'd be like that seems about right and then it's sold for much under that so i don't know like i think maybe the two year of it all people still aren't warmed up to these but these are very very cool cards obviously there's only ten copies twenty total across two years larry fitzgerald verse hall of fame inductee larry fitzgerald verse ben roethlisberger obviously roethlisberger has the hardware but i think if you ask just like this era of twenty two thousand to two thousand ten if you like just ask like who is a better player between roethlisberger and fitzgerald i think just like resoundingly people would say fitzgerald he's more collectible he's one of the best receivers of this era a great i'm not there's a lot that we can say and dog on ben roethlisberger for his previous actions and i don't wanna do that but what i will do is focus in on fitzgerald great human just the epitome of go to work dominate and just do all the right things so he's he has a high likability mhmm and a lot of good memories and moments too so that's why i probably say even though it's in a nine and the roethlisberger's in a ten wyatt outsells it but dude my biggest thing when you sent these over or put it in the notes and i looked it up in card later i was expecting like fifteen hundred to two thousand dollar sales and was stunned that both of them were under one k granted i don't look at this stuff every day but that was what stuck out to me yeah and then since because these ended probably like ten days ago at the time of episode release but an adrian peterson recently sold two days ago a twenty a twenty ten mosaic adrian peterson and a psa ten for twenty two twenty five so two okay twenty five which that's a very strong sale for ap that same card sold raw the exact same copy but the same card was selling raw in twenty twenty three for a hun for ninety and a hundred and fifty dollars two cents so a little fifteen to twenty x return do you have a preference eleven and ten which one you like better i think i like eleven better same i think eleven looks i don't i used to own ten and eleven jay cutlers i sold both during the cutler finite consolidation i've since gotten the twenty ten back i think i have twenty ten but twenty eleven i think looks better i'm with you there next sale back to the prism post playing day stuff twenty twenty five prism sean taylor gold vinyl out of five thirty one hundred dollars this sean taylor stuff you know sells well people go nuts for this this was one and this card is just absolutely disgusting post playing days or not this card rules it it it it says wash it it's got the old logo it says yes the team he was on that jersey that uniform he looks like he's hunting someone down very collectible player thirty one hundred dollars is very very strong like what's this make the finite although i did see grand slam collectibles post on his instagram he's got both black finite pat tillman cards and i think he was asking a hundred k apiece for those so i mean yeah post plague day stuff like maybe we should do a whole podcast on post plague day prism stuff we there's enough to talk about but what what's your reaction to a sale like this the sean taylor stuff sells very strong so i'm not at all i guess i'm not surprised that this sold for thirty one that's so much prism is selling very high very strong it seems like so far i i didn't notice i love that this has washington redskins and the logo on there that would have felt weird to put commanders on a a team name that he never played for so shout out them for for getting redskins on there that card's sick these the gold vinyl look awesome from this year i would love i hope to one day own one of a player that i collect so this is a very cool very cool card we move over to the biggest jaw dropper of the week the twenty twenty three donris optic bryce young rookie downtown gold vinyl one of one psa ten private sale seventy thousand dollars what i did not see this coming that's insane right some would say here we go we've got notes from cardladder verified by the seller card legends with a screenshot from the seller's bank app showing completed payments and text from buyer jose angel quintanilla at and that's a that's a instagram handle as well so that's right shout out shout out carlotta for doing those kinds of notes i didn't know that they did that for private sales yeah it's part of their whole methodology the notes have to be it has to be verified so this is like it's private but it is legit this is a legitimate sale here that is the highest selling bryce young card of all time not surprised surpassing his rookie finite that sold raw in january of twenty twenty four for fifty thousand dollars also in a private sale but the notes are saying we have not verified the sale it was reported publicly by a third party broker santiago sports the broker provided the social account of two buyers the broker does say that the card sold for cash i remember seeing a video from santiago when that that was happening i he that was like there's some documentation of that yeah yeah that's they're alluding to this it seems like maybe they just weren't able to get a statement from the buyers that took it by it but and then his variation rookie black flyknight sold for thirty five k in march of twenty four so yeah this is a huge huge sale for it to not just be his optic gold vinyl but for it to be a downtown selling for that much money i don't know that's it's not for me it's not for me but that's a it is a cool i don't know i've seen cooler downtowns like i don't need two panthers on the background like give me something else that is related to carolina or the team because i like when there's like lots of little references or easter eggs that's right i'm i'm gonna put i'm i'm gonna put my i'm gonna put on a hat i never put on and the hat is downtown enthusiast and commentator and i'm gonna provide some feedback on this car agreed the two panthers don't need them give me one a very mean panther i can't like they look like they look a little shy i don't want a shy panther i want a ferocious panther yes and also what i would love what would make this a seventy thousand dollar card for me is if it said in the background like keep pounding the the oh yeah there was the drunk like that would be that would be sick and i'm missing that so give me instead of two sad pan panthers give me one ferocious panther these are timid panthers these are yeah disney movie panthers where like the panther is the protagonist like it's not a mean panther these are main hero shy panthers that are like learning that they have teeth that like they don't even know yet spot on it's like a baby faced panther plopped into jungle book with blue globally like that's yes this could be a side character and it's like we're trying to win football games here not remind us of bryce young's rookie season although it is a rookie like let's grow up let's mature a little bit let's have some like blood dripping from the mouth and let it say keep pounding in the back that's what i want give me the panther that murdered tarzan's family that's that's the type of energy i need on this card or left i guess it was a leopard in tarzan but wow wow wow is right alright we move over to the we're gonna contrast these two which is gonna be unbelievable o nine tops platinum stafford super factor one of one shout out tops platinum just such an o nine set psa ten rookie card thirty one thousand seven hundred and twenty dollars so you could get a stafford superfractor rookie and a psa ten for less than more than half the cost of a bryce young downtown gold vinyl how how are you doing that card looks awesome the super fractor is super fracting in this particular scan picture it's just him dude it's they hit the it's it it adjacent to why i like like a twenty fourteen prism where it's literally just the background and then the player is up front which is amazing that has been a reason like i've liked my i talked about i picked up the twenty twenty five mosaic black one zero one dj moore and i have a caleb williams but i'm like that's why i like those so much is the entire black background is like the black finite black mosaic pattern with like some lines in there but the focus is the player there's no like border encroaching on it or anything like that it's just the pattern and this is doing that same thing this makes me wanna look into o nine tops platinum you better you better do that before this goes live because i had the exact same feeling awesome card we've got one more to share and that is the twenty sixteen select prism rookie of derrick henry black prism one of one psa ten beautiful card wonderful card this card sold for at auction for twelve thousand six hundred dollars so i contrasted that with the black finite sale of his rookie card which is in the collection of lingua sports cards brian has talked about it on his podcast and like why he what he did and why he wanted to acquire it but here's what i wanna ask you like the the this select sold for a little more than a little less than i guess half of the finite do you think like is that about right well how do you see kind of those sales in comparison no i think because that finite purchase was what a couple of years ago and i would imagine if it went up for auction today it would sell for much higher i think so that's what yeah i think that finite would sell for over fifty k now yeah and i feel like saquon sold recently in the forty ish range coming off that legendary saquon season but henry's career overall like he's still going he's in top tens of everything he he's gonna continue to climb the ladder i bet that finite would sell for a lot more and maybe like the finite's four x this select instead of two x this card's the select is awesome though i mean how awesome is the action shot man yeah cool photo the black looks good it's a ten to boot so that that is an awesome card but yeah that that sale makes the finite sale i feel like look even better instead of necessarily being like oh select is half of prism i think it to me it says the finite's worth a lot lot more one hundred percent shout out card ladder from marketwatch a lot of awesome football cards being sold yes sold and purchased have you purchased any football cards over the past week brett i wanna shout out my community of followers on instagram this year more than ever before the support you all are giving me on this twenty twenty five prism release first of all i can think about ten ten guys who are bigger degens than me on the safe search front because it's always like this crew and they're just like sending me listings and i'm just i'm in that moment and i'm do i wait for this to go to auction like the quiddipay for example i i gotta which quiddipay's terrible this year like shittiest season ever like he's probably not gonna be a cult anymore but unfortunately i've i've married myself to this project and people like people are asking me about like well like you like one of ones like what about the gold ten it's like i view this project as a one of one like mhmm the like this like i'm trying to do something no one else has done so with inside that project there's like out of ten but quinipay was terrible this year he pissed me off more than any other player on the team and i here i am overpaying for his you know third gold prism card or whatever but dude this is how sick i am and i i talked about i was trying to like talk about not doing this like weeks ago but here i am there was literally a quiddy pay up for auction and then a one hit buy it now and i knew i was i could win the one at auction but i was still like in any doubt of uncertainty and it was like you know what i'm gonna pay the tax of not having to worry about it and so i just bought the card but like that was sent to me by somebody and then last night shout out paul colts eight zero eight stable sent me the zaire franklin which again another player that just pissed me off a lot this year zaire frank on the colts but here i am buying smashing ben on his twenty twenty five second year second appearance in prism and i had spent all this time talking about the checklist and how it was retread and then these guys i don't even like care for i'm sitting here buying it but at the end of the day collecting is interesting collecting makes you do things you probably shouldn't and i'm so married to this collection that i'm building it's like i just wanna i just wanna keep it going so those are my pickups i also will say and i'm gonna probably do an episode on this because i'm finding myself being like why did i do this but i'm happy i did this i spent a lot of money upgrading copies from my existing prism gold collection because they were available at auction and they were of tier one guys in my prism collection and i went through and checked what i had for grades for these cards and all of the replacements i got aside from one was an upgrade for one card was an upgrade from a seven to a nine and then all the other ones were nine to tens so i just got jim mint copies of some ty hiltons to improve my grade into jonathan taylor was another one that i now i have all of them except in latest twenty twenty five taylor and psa ten but i'm like i would never have done that before but i found myself when these cards were available too i wanted the best copy of those and i wouldn't do this for every player but like t y buckner and taylor like these are my favorite players in the prison run so i've i i ended up spending like a thousand bucks upgrading copies and i just wouldn't have done that before but i don't know man when cards present themselves you kinda do weird things in the moment and found myself doing some weird things this week but it all aligns with my north star yes that's awesome i saw i hadn't talked to you about this but then did you recently then sell a bunch sell a bunch of the lower copies i feel like i saw that there were tons of prism gold colts available on fanatics recently none of none of them were mine got it got it got it got it but that's that's awesome that you're able to upgrade that many there's a i think i don't wanna speak on whose copy it was but there's a matt forte prism gold psa ten twenty fourteen currently up for auction that i think is ryan green's i have a psa nine and i'm like do i try and upgrade it to the ten you want your you want your if you could get your favorite guys in a ten you wanna get this is what i've learned you wanna give a shot at it it doesn't have to be all the guys but your if forte is one of your favorite guys you gotta give it a give it the good college try yeah we'll see what happens there because sometimes i'm like there's only ten copies i'm okay with like nines and i'm okay just having a copy but then again once you see that there's a a ten out there it's hard to not want it what's the pop on it that that also is a deciding factor i think if it's the only one then it makes it extra special you know this is true i also do wanna say yes same thing people keep sending me listings it's awesome i try and say thank you to everybody or at least like like i see you i see you thank you for the listings because sometimes it's like i get the same listing from ten different people i'll just be like all the time like i still appreciate it it is awesome that people are out there checking yeah there's do you tell people do you tell people thank you but i'm not spending three grand on a luther burton card i'll just say thanks for sending like like because yeah i used to i feel like try or sometimes i'll explain my current thought process on the card but sometimes it's a thanks for sending like there is a twenty twenty five prism gold vinyl caleb williams that ends today's wednesday to ends tonight at auction that dozens of people sent me which thank you very much i'm watching it i don't know i'm gonna give it the college try but it's already at eleven hundred bucks and it's the first one to hit so we'll see but as far as pickups on my end i the only card i bought in the last week is a two thousand three ultimate collection priest holmes game jersey patch gold out of twenty five very good yeah i've never been a patch guy but i have a bunch of priest homes patches just because i've been able to get them for like twenty bucks thirty bucks for like big three color chunky game use patches of priest homes they're awesome and this gold i'd never seen a gold before i have some of the other ones that's numbered out at i think one ninety nine or one seventy five so for eighty bucks i got it at auction it was a thrilling win and then the other update last week i talked about i got a twenty twenty five prism gold lance briggs for twenty five bucks package showed up empty to my house you're kidding me the other day like fully like box cutter cut open like empty bubble mailer and like i saw the mail person come and it wasn't my normal lady it was this guy who i've never seen before deliver the mail i'm not accusing but it was just like i know my lady we love our lady very well like i give her christmas cards like she's delivering tons of cards to my house i feel like she would have noticed that this is a ripped open bubble like was ravaged like i pull it out of my mailbox i'm like what what the hell is this so i gotta figure out what i can do there like i can't report on ebay yet of like it didn't arrive and then i don't know that whole process always takes forever but yeah it sucks i just want the card i don't even care about the getting thirty bucks back i want the lance briggs gold prism that i got for a steal dude you you someone stole my steal ugh you spoke that into existence in a way because you were like worried about the seller canceling on it because it was a steal and then it ends up getting stolen yeah that's horrible for a lance briggs come on yeah i like i wonder that i i need to write note down the cert i gotta hunt for that card now i will find that the original my original now now i'm making it a mission over the rest of my hobby journey ten years from now i'm gonna see one in a booth in a case someone will be by then in ten years someone's gonna be asking ten thousand dollars for it let's put let's put let's put let's put a ten dollar bounty on it yep i'm putting a big bounty ten bucks alright good episode card call out time let's do it we asked to see post playing days cards those were awesome i didn't write anything for this so far what do we wanna see brett what should we see what was the theme from this episode i have an idea i have an idea for next week so i don't wanna speak that out because it's the perfect theme okay for for next week maybe i don't think we've done this yet but a theme i think this would be fun to see is show us your super bowl mvp cards oh yeah so if you have cards of a guy who won the super bowl mvp share them and we'll repost them on the football card pod simple super bowl mvps if the player won a super bowl mvp share the card let's look at it let's talk about it tag the football card pod on instagram we will reshare thank you all for listening we'll see you next week
