The Football Card Podcast #33: Drake Maye Win a Super Bowl and What This Really Means for Football Cards
Hello, and welcome to the football card podcast. This is it. You made it. It is Friday, and you are listening to the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered on football cards and most importantly football cards. I'm your host, John, aka, Pac Nicholson, and with me as always is Brett, mister stacking slabs himself.
Brett, how are you doing? I'm well. I am trying to figure out right now what the spread is. We talk about the game. We talk about the halftime show.
We talk about all of these things, prop bets, cards, of course, but I wanna talk about the spread. Like, what's the spread gonna be? And I'm not talking about the point spread. I'm talking about the food spread. How many calories can I consume on Super Bowl Sunday where I wake up the next day, maybe not feeling great, but you know what I say?
It's okay to do this because it's the Super Bowl. This is a no limit day. You just go. You keep it's like Thanksgiving in a way. You just football.
You just keep throwing them back, appetizers, main courses. I like the dips. Of course, I like the wings. I like the sliders, the chips, the dip. Maybe balance it out a little bit with some veggie with some high calorie ranch, veggie dip dressing.
All the things like that to me and, like, letting my hair down a little bit and just diving into the calories is almost as fun as watching the game. So I'm excited about the spread. We've got neighbors across the street that have they're insane like us. They've got three kids and even a in a closer time gap than our three kids, so they've invited us to come watch the games. We're gonna have six children just, like, tearing down the house.
At least it's not our house, but there's going to be a spread, and we're gonna contribute to that. So fired up about the food, man. Yeah. I was actually thinking about this before this episode because I know from listening to past stacking slabs episodes, yeah, you set ambitious calorie intake goals for Thanksgiving. And so I was wondering if the Super Bowl, has a similar trajectory, and it sounds like it does.
It does. I always say this every year during Thanksgiving, though. It starts with breakfast. You really need if you're trying to hit break records, you really need that high calorie breakfast, the casserole with the sausage and the bacon, and then even bacon on the side, tons of eggs and cheese like that. You need the base if you're gonna try to, like, compete for world records.
That's what I've learned over the years. But then with all those kids, what's the what's bedtime look like when with kickoff at 06:30? Is it just no rules? But the rules will be bent a little bit. Although, I will say this, and I know there's alternative programming, which is absolutely hilarious.
And I don't know if you've caught this, the alternative halftime programming, which is a story in and of itself. But I I will be focused in on Bad Bunny. Like, I wanna see Bad Bunny do his damn thing, the number one streaming artist in the universe. And, dude, this guy is like this guy is like the the guy the guy. He's, like, elevating Puerto Rico's economy.
Like, he's he's he's a WWE performer on the side. Like, my kind of guy. So I don't care when the bedtimes are. I'm not missing Bad Bunny, man. I wanna feel that energy.
You could miss the start of the third quarter, but, like, need the halftime show. That's right. So, yeah, man. I'm I'm excited a lot. I know we've got a ton to get into, but yeah.
What are you doing for the game? Honestly, it kinda I feel like snuck up on our household. This morning, my wife and I were like, wait. What are we doing? We'll probably have some friends over.
We have, a couple that lives nearby that they have a he's probably eight months old. We hang out with them all the time and then another couple that's nearby that are expecting. So that's kind of our squad. That's who those are the people who've been over for bears games. That's who I've allowed into my, safe space.
So probably something low key like that. But, yeah, gotta gotta figure out the spread. I I love, like, mini weenie dogs, like, in a crock pot with some jelly. You know, that whole thing. Sliders.
Buffalo chicken dip is a is a must. Yeah. I'm now I'm getting excited for the spread. Dude, I'm I'm I'm think I want some Asian fusion in there. Give me some dumplings and some egg rolls too.
Teriyaki all over everything. Yeah. This is we need to do a little stacking slabs cookbook recipe. Like, here's your Super Bowl guide through the from the football card podcast. Oh, I love it.
Hey. I wanna throw a card at you out of the gate. So we didn't talk about this in advance, but I was just thinking about it. And because I first of all, this will set this card up. Did you, by chance, catch any of the Pro Bowl?
Because we talked about it. Did you watch any of it? No. Some highlights on Twitter. I saw some clips, but, nothing that even made me want to stop scrolling and watch a whole clip.
Dude, there was there was so my default always in in this period of time, especially starting now, like, I lean really heavy into my wrestling consumption, and it's, like, nonstop all the time, and it's just it's fun. It helps me escape. But I try to, like, be mindful of my wife being around, especially if she's feeding babies. So I'm like, I'm not gonna, like, throw on wrestling until she goes upstairs to save her a little bit. So I was, like, scrolling, and the Pacers were just getting beat.
And so that was over, and I was like, what's on? I didn't wanna throw on the news. So I I was like, shit. The Pro Bowl's on. So I threw it on for, like, ten seconds and saw Sanders cutting a an interview on the sidelines, and I was like, what a spectacle this is.
But that leads me to this card, which by the time this goes live, it will have ended. But the 2025 Prism, Shadir Sanders, rookie gold prism, the first one, actually selling through a great stacking slabs partner, DC Sports Eighty Seven. This card has a 136 watchers, 30 bids. At the time of recording, it'll end tonight, but it's currently at $3,235. Where and I'm looking at this card from a rookie card perspective.
It it's a pretty good looking rookie card. I just it you're getting a great shot of Shidder. It looks like a I don't know. It's just I'm like, when I first saw it, I was like, I gotta hit watch and see where this ends. But this card, like, what are your thoughts?
Like, where do you think this card is going to end at? Oh, that's a good question. Maybe, like, 10 to 12. Oh my goodness. Isn't that kind of I feel like looking at the going rate of those other, like, $20.24 class, like, all those guys were, like, in the twenties, like, Caleb, Drake May, Jaden definitely was.
I know Shador didn't have, like, the dynamo rookie year that Jaden did, but I don't know. I feel like 10 isn't isn't crazy. But what are you thinking? You're probably right, dude. And I just hadn't got like, even thought about, like, what I thought, but you're probably right.
Dude, Chitter Sanders to me is a we everyone in cards always wants to talk about, like, performance and on the field, but, like, Chidor is, like, such has such cultural impact that I almost like, obviously, if he I was gonna say, if he became a Pro Bowl quarterback, but he's already a Pro Bowl. He's already done it. Yeah. Flag Pro Bowl quarterback. But, dude, even if this guy, let's just say, is, like, you know, resurrects the Browns and, you know, they're they're in the playoffs and he has a, you know, an a great year next year, like, obviously, that will help him, and his cards will probably go nuclear.
But I feel like at the current state, even if Shidder just stayed the way he is, whether it was, you know, starter, mediocre starter, or backup decent backup, like, I feel like his cards will always have demand because of his cultural impact on just society. Like, dude, he is very, very popular. Like, it's almost like one of those things where like, I think about this with, like, Caitlin Clark. It's like people get shitty when, like, people get excited about Clark and stuff. And, like, well, she's not as good as Asia Wilson.
It's like, well, that's not the point. Like, the point is, like, cultural impact. And I feel like Shooter Sanders is just like, dude, his audience, his following, like, he dude, he's like dude, they couldn't wait to promote the fact that Shooter Sanders was in the Super Bowl be or in the Pro Bowl because of just the engagement and just the conversation that he's gonna start. So I don't know, man. Like, he's a interesting guy, and I I think it'll be fun to kinda analyze this sale and just the rest of his cards to come because I feel like there'll be a story and there'll be a crew that 'll always analyze, like, well, they shouldn't be this much because he hasn't done much.
But I think that's almost secondary to the point of him and his impact on sports right now. Yeah. And I'd like to see him be successful. Like, I like these type of players, the polarizing players who can be flashy and all that, but I do think it's good for the sport. It makes storylines.
It is sports are wrestling. Everything is wrestling. It is. It is. Good to have characters.
But I'm curious to see how this stacks up. Like, how much does Cam Ward's gold prism sell for? And is Shador has he overtaken him? I kinda think he probably has even though I think Cam Ward is good. I think he's gonna be okay.
Like, I think he had he didn't have crazy numbers his rookie season, but he was it seems like second half of the season, Kay Moore was kinda starting to come around. And who knows? Maybe with all the new coaching in Tennessee, he's able to put it together. But I didn't know that this was up for auction, the Shador gold, so I'm now very interested in where it ends up. I I I I love the point that you made about K.
Mord, and I am very interested. I wanna see the Jackson Dart. I wanna see the K. Mord, and I wanna see the Shador Sanders first gold prisms, what they all sell for. And I don't know if you got a chance to see it, but the black finite Shadir Sanders actually got pulled by a breaker too.
So that's out there in the mix as well. Yeah. I think the the DART is too yeah. We I we can get into some Yes. I'm I'm I yes.
We'll we'll that'll be a teaser. I know you wanna talk more about Prism. But Yeah. We got we got the the three and out coming up. We've got some topics.
But before we get to any of that, we gotta talk numbers. But before we get to any of that, we gotta thank our sponsors, Card Ladder, the only ones. The only ones, Card Ladder. I like that slogan. We need to get some I know we were talking about apparel.
We need to get some Card Ladder, the only one T shirts. But, yeah, shout out Card Ladder. Would not be able to put together these episodes without our good friends at I feel very complete. I feel like my collection in CardLadder is active. I'm in an it's in my workflow.
When I get a new card, I put it in there, and it's fun, man. So I'm always thinking about new and exciting ways to use it, filtering all the things. But I will say this on the card ladder front. Dude, you know what's making my job a lot harder prepping for the football card podcast? One piece.
Oh. Dude, the one piece sales on the eBay machine are insane, dude. It's like, I need to start filtering out one piece because I feel like the one piece of it all is selling like hotcakes. And I saw a clip from Logan Paul flying out from the Royal Rumble, and he was with his vision teammates. And Paul Heyman was in there, and he decided, you know what?
I'm with my boys right now. I'm gonna I'm not a one piece guy. All you guy you guys and gals are mad at me because I'm talking about one piece, but I we're all here to have fun. And he just ripped, like, three boxes of whatever the first edition is probably of one piece. And I was like, that's only gonna add fuel to the fire.
So shout out all you one piece degens. Like, you're buying cards like a maniac, but you're also making it harder for me to put together the football card podcast. Yeah. It is on the rise significantly. I think it's one of the most graded things that PSA is doing right now.
Sales are insane, and I didn't know much about it. I've learned more. I didn't even know it was, like, the longest running anime show or one of the longest running shows. And yeah. I mean, it's amazing to see that that can like, a new new, in quotes, product can catch on like that that fast.
So I don't know. I I don't I don't hate it. I think it's, it's fascinating to see. But, yeah, from a data standpoint, it's I'm sure that that record month that, trading cards just experienced this last year or this last this recent month in January is a I bet one piece is a big, big part of that. How how soon do we get a football card a trading card game that's, like, officially licensed licensed in branding.
It feels like that's inevitable. If it already doesn't exist, then I Bo Jackson do something? I feel like I saw something at the national last year. Right? Like, guys are trying to do Bo Jackson battle cards or something.
Yeah. I think I actually have one from the national. I've got a BoJackson battle card. That's a good call out. The the BoJackson.
And what a great guy to just be leading the charge. I wanna I wanna battle BoJackson in some some TCG games. Yeah. I'm looking. Do I I might need to get some of these BoJack's.
Like, are there other players and signers in this checklist, or is it all Bo? Is every card Bo? That would be sick to put out a set of cards that's just you. Dude, yes. I I have to on this note, and I know, dude.
I'm we're we're I'm I'm I'm taking us off track to get this episode off the ground, but I I did this is very topical, but I did see this. And my man Tyler, Tyler Sports guy, he posted this football card that absolutely rolls. He's got a dual ink auto from, I think, the yeah. Rookies and Stars, Blue Autos of Bo Jackson and Brian Bosworth dual. He posted that, and I was like, I couldn't like this card fast enough, but one of the greater feuds in football history.
Yeah. That is awesome. The Boss, baby. I'm looking at Bo Jackson 2026 checklist, and, I mean, there's this I I'm gonna have to I'm gonna have to investigate this Bo Jackson battle set because there's some there's some cool stuff in here. It could be next, dude.
One piece. Never know. Invest now. Yes. Invest in bow.
Episode 33. We're getting up there. We're in the 33. Just think of where we started. One.
It's amazing how numbers work, and we are up here at 33. So hall of famers to wear number 33. Sammy Bah, Tony Dorsett, Ollie Matson, Mike Mikalski, and Ray Nitschke. Who who do you wanna start? Who jumped out to you for 33, Brett?
Dude, I I thought of Roger Craig. Instantly, I thought about I think he's one of those players that gets lost in the shuffle on those pro prolific 49ers teams. He he's a three time Super Bowl champ. He spent from '83 to '90, he was on the niners, and he had a one year stint as an LA Raider. And then he played with the Vikings for a couple years.
Offensive player of the year in 1988, and first team all pro in 1988. And I think he when I think of Roger Craig, dude, I always think about, like, the video games I played as a kid and Roger Craig being the running back. And, you know, it was like, you play Tech Mobile, and it's, like, easy to throw to Jerry Rice and, you know, get the stats up. But Roger Craig was pretty damn good player. So I I I did some digging because I literally I know so many 49ers collectors, and I'd never seen any Roger Craig cards.
And his 24 eminence is his highest selling card of all time, which it sold for $3,100. So, obviously, a post playing day card, but I feel like Roger Craig is one of those guys that falls into that, like, post playing day, category of if you're gonna buy his cards, those are the cards you're gonna probably end up gravitating to. So hell of a player. Shout out all you niners fans. I know you're probably big Roger Craig fans.
And we'll be talking a little bit about post playing day stuff later. But, yeah, shout out Roger Craig. Yeah. Two seasons over 2,000 yards from scrimmage. That's that's that's the benchmark.
That's a big number. Yeah. He had, has all the accolades not only from three times Super Bowl, but having the first team all pro and the big numbers. So get them in the hall. I mean, I'm looking at this resume.
This resume is hall worthy in my opinion. You what What do I know you're a running back stats guy. Is there anyone, like, just by, like, the glance, you're just looking at it now for the first time. Is there anybody in the hall that you would compare him to? I mean so he's got 13,000 scrimmage yards, 73 touchdowns.
Honestly, off the top of my head, I bet Edron James has similar stats career stats. Okay. Edron's 15,600. Sorry, Edge. Yeah.
That and 91 touchdowns. So an extra season or two short from Roger Craig. Yeah. I guess Craig is in that, like, Fred Taylor realm. I think Fred Taylor is at, like, 14,000, and he's not in the hall.
But just the the Super Bowl accolades, I do think helps, and I'm sure that I know Craig had some good playoff numbers too. So I don't know. I I don't know even if he's on on the shortlist or if he's making it down into the final 25 or not. But, yeah, shout out Roger Craig. Pro Bowl or sorry.
Hall of Fame related question to you because I know there's a lot of controversy right now with the Hall of Fame, but I wanna get your perspective here on hall of fame and tiebreakers. Dude, I'm of the mindset, and I know, like, you can look at and cut the hall of fame any way you want to. But to me, if a player was a part of a Super Bowl team, that should be that should be, like, used to their advantage to get them in in any tiebreaker scenario. I just, like I think about that niners team, those niners teams, and I think about Roger Craig. And if there's, like, a you're putting two guys together and you're thinking about moving, I'm like, dude, like, would this I asked the question.
Would this team have would have been able to do it without a player like Roger Craig? And I feel like, to me, that's always the, I feel like those are the types of players that probably should get in over over many others. I'm being selfish right now, and I this is how I think about Reggie Wayne. It's like it's if his career stats are crazy and if it's even close, like, he not only played in the Super Bowl, won a Super Bowl, but caught a touchdown in the Super Bowl. And I just think, like, this is the Super Bowl, man.
Like, we're about to see this Sunday. We're about to see, like, maybe hall of fame worthy moments or we get someone who might end up being in the hall of fame, and you can always go back to to that game. And I I just I hold it in such high regard. Yeah. Future hall of famer Sam Darnold.
This could be his could be his moment, though. You never know. It is wild. Fourteen and three the rest of his career every season. And they'll be like, wow.
Remember when Sam Darnold remember when eight time Super Bowl champion Sam Darnold was drafted by the Jets and didn't win? And saw ghosts? Yeah. Insaw ghosts and that whole thing. Oh, man.
33 on my end, Charles Tillman, peanut Tillman, legend. Put him in the hall. The athletic recently did a really cool story on Charles Tillman. I recommend reading it basically about how after football, Tillman joined the FBI, and then he recently stepped down because of all the, immigration raids and all that. But, yeah, Charles Tillman, just a beast.
Like, in this article, I'm talks about how for he he rode across Lake Michigan. He did a twenty five hour in a boat for, like, cancer research across Lake Michigan. He does all these, like, iron man things. Just, like, a way more accomplished human being than I'll ever be. It's like not only Man principle.
Some people look at some people look at Charles Tillman and just be like, the peanut punch, like, what a move. But it sounds like we we all need to, like, dig into the history of Peanut Tillman a little bit. Like That's amazing. Straight to the FBI after being a player. He was so in 2022, there was a active shooter at in Highland Park in North Of Chicago, fourth of July parade, and, like, seven people died, and Charles Tillman was the first people on the scene.
Like, he was, like, an active FBI dude. Like, not it wasn't like I feel like Shaq kinda moonlit as a cop. He did. Sheriff Shaq. Yeah.
Sheriff like, it was, like, a bit. It's, no. Charles Tillman was taking down drug kingpins and, running raids. So and 44 career force fumbles. He's, like, the most by a DB by 10, the most ever in a season.
He had 10 in 2012. The most ever in a game. He had four in a game. It's insane. And there's nothing better than a perfectly executed peanut punch No.
In a slow mo re the slow mo replay of a peanut punch is just the best thing. Dude, it was so influential. Like, my one of my favorite players, Shaq Leonard, dude, he was the he he would peanut punch and was so good at it. Guys running at him, and he learned he had to have learned that from from Charles Tillman, and that was such that's that move that play is so influential. You see it today.
We might see it in the Super Bowl, and he was really the first guy who started doing that. Yeah. And, yeah, the it's just always crazy at, like, full speed just looks like the ball. And the ball always explodes out when it gets punched. It's just a reminder that this is a rubber ball full of air that can be dislodged with force.
And I love this one line in the article. They said, those who played with and against Tillman followed him around the field like jackholes following a tiger knowing they would be fed. One of his teammates, Spice Adams, great, hilarious content creator now, but he played on the bears, but he just was talking about, like, I would love trailing Tillman because I knew there was a chance the ball was gonna shoot out, and I could get a fumble recovery. So it was Tillman was awesome. I hope one day he makes it into the hall.
He had a first team all pro. He's made some Pro Bowls. Calvin Johnson's in the article saying that he should be in the hall. So cool piece. Shout out Charles Peanut Tillman.
What is it what do you think Tillman's best card is? So I would say so the highest selling card, I don't I don't believe it's real. It because it's like a flawless card out of 10 that's sold for, like, $9. I saw that. That that card's nothing compared to this card.
This card card owned by that's now graded. That's Mark sweat 47, fellow Chicago bears fan friend. Shout out Mark. He owns that card. That went to auction right after the Cutler.
So I was I was tapped out on resources, but that, I wanted that card very badly with the All Pro Shield. He doesn't have that many cards. So he's got the ball he's got the ball in his hand. I mean, that like, what did he just do? And the dude, this card is Mark, hell of a card, my friend.
What a card. This card kicks ass. It's so good. I bet yeah. That that is an awesome card.
His I have his rookie o three tops chrome black refractor out of a 100, but o three, you know, there's not that much else. There's no super factors or much on a one of one front, his rookie year. And then, yeah, defensive players. Like, he's not in a lot of those early 2000 sets really until the late twenty ten. So shout out Charles Tillman.
One other player, Sammy Bah, I just like I know his nickname's Slinging Sammy Bah. So I'm like, how much was he actually slinging? Sammy Baugh was slinging a lot of picks. Let's let's just say that. Total career stats, a 187 touchdowns, 203 interceptions.
I love these guys. I love old quarterbacks just throwing picks. But Take chances, man. Uh-huh. But truly, I think, revolutionized the game.
Six time pro bowler, four team first team all pro, two time Super Bowl champ in the hall of famer. But, you know, I'm going down the Wikipedia pro football reference wormhole, and I knew this existed, but I hadn't fully read about it. But the college all star game do you know about this? That from 1934 to 1976, the defending NFL champion would play a team of college all star all stars in a exhibition game every year, which Oh my bring that back. Please.
Bring that back. But what a just the thought of that happening now is hilarious to me. But, yeah, there was some amazing, things that were happening there, but then players were getting hurt. NFL players were complaining. They didn't wanna have to play exhibition games.
But, yeah, just something about thinking about college all star. You know? Because there's always the debate. Like, could Alabama beat the Browns or whoever, like, the big NFL team is or the best college team? Would they beat the worst NFL team?
And sometimes I think you just gotta put on pads and settle it on the field. Can you can you imagine what, like I I as I'm thinking about the the construct of this, I'm just thinking about, like, corporate partnerships and sponsorships. Like, it'd be a feeding frenzy. Like, all the brands there trying to get in front of all the active NFL players and potentially could be NFL players. Like, that seems like a spectacle.
I'd rather watch that than the Pro Bowl. Yeah. Truly. Or, like, it doesn't even have to be the defending Super Bowl champs. Like, if right now, the Rams were playing Ohio State, I'd watch it.
Dude, yes. All day. Or I guess I IU. I don't know. That's that's How how about Mendoza?
How about the Indiana football Hoosiers have to play the Las Vegas Raiders, and Mendoza has to earn his number one draft pick spot and QB one spot. How fun would that I mean, how many people would watch IU versus the Raiders? Yeah. A lot. That would be that would get some ratings.
Come on, Amazon. Cut the check. You're spending billions on Melania, docs. Cut the check and give the people what they actually want. Oh, I I, I I heard that movie did well now.
Yeah. Sold out everywhere. Alright. Okay. 30 threes.
Good 30 threes. Let's get to three and out. Let's get on defense. Lace them up. Oh, I'm I'm make I'm excited.
First one's you. Right? Yeah. Just prism update. How are we feeling so far?
We're actual Prism's out. We are now beyond just first off the line. Regular hobby Prism is hitting the market, and save searches are starting to light up. I actually spent some time the other night just watching breaks on YouTube, and it was fascinating. Just to like, there was I just searched, like, twenty twenty five Prism on YouTube and then, like, went to live.
And so there was, like, five different breakers who happened to be live at that point ripping prism boxes. And seeing the, like, different ways that different breakers, you know, go about breaking was fascinating to me where, like, one channel was this guy who was clearly a newer or a fresher breaker. He's just, like, by himself. And, like, each pack, he's, like, really gingerly opening and going through and then sleeping cards himself. So I was, like, watching this guy, and he was kinda endearing.
I'm like, I like this guy. And then I go over to, like, one of the big ones, like, the Blezes or the Laytons where they just will open, like, six boxes at once and stack all stack all the cards. Yep. And then the way that they just, like, crank through these, it reminded me of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where on one end, you've got it's not Violet. Who's the girl who'd like the dad employs, like, the whole factory to just rip open as many Wonka bars as possible where they're not even eating the chocolate, but they're just looking for the ticket?
Yeah. I I I didn't get into the Roald Dahl, winter term class my, junior year of college, so I I I can't answer that. Saw Willy Wonka, like, the movie? I saw it, but I I don't I'm not, like Okay. A historian.
I couldn't just, like, give you the names. Is it Violet Baudelaire? I don't know. But there's so everyone's searching for the golden ticket. Right?
And there's this one girl who's, from a wealthy family, and her dad just, like, employs, like, buys thousands and thousands of cases of the Wonka bars and just has a factory set up with people ripping them open, like, no ticket. They throw the bar away. Okay. And then there's then you get Charlie who gets his one bar, and he, like, just opens it ever so slowly and, like, really appreciates it. And that's what I was watching when I was going back and forth between these two breakers because, like, the I understand it, but the disregard for base cards is just it's hilarious kinda to see where I'm like, they just are because they'll have a giant stack of cards because they'll open 10 packs, stack all the cards together, and then just go through a stack at a time.
And it's like, 10 base cards, throw them out. Okay. Here's a purple hit whatever. Blue. I don't know.
It was just funny because I was hoping. Was like, what if I'm watching one of these breaks and I see a card I want get hit? So that was fun. It was fun to watch. I ended up watching it longer than I should have, stayed up later than I should have watching these prism breaks.
But, yeah, the product is actively being ripped. Cards are hitting eBay. It's a it's a wonderful time right now. I I I much rather the burn and churn mentality than the slow burn. Like, dude, the slow burners when slow everyone's trying to slow play, like, you know Yeah.
Parallels out of one ninety nine because they see a rookie badge. I'm like, I don't have the patience for that. So give me the, like, quick hitting, if I am gonna do that because I've done that before where I just pick a couple breaks to watch. But you talking about this has me thinking. You here's a content idea.
Maybe we can spin this up. You ever a Mystery Science Theater 3,000 fan at all? No. Are you familiar with Mystery Science Theater? I know the name.
Okay. So it goes. So so Mystery Science Theater, there's two characters that are sitting watching a movie in some old movie, and they're commentating. The it's like the picture's being shown, but it's the the bit's all about, like, them commentating over the top of it. I'm thinking, man, there might be an opportunity to just, like, throw all the like, do a mixtape of just, like, breaking moments and just Mystery Science Theater 3,000 it where you're just, like, providing commentary off of what you're saying.
I think I think there'd be there might be some humor in that. Okay. Maybe we do that. Maybe we do a little stacking slab stream of a stream where we're yeah, let's get it going. Also, I think I've done a one eighty on the post playing days or the players on, like, odd teams was kinda critical of it in the last episode.
And and you were kinda saying you kinda liked it for being weird, and I was like, I could see myself loving it. A lot of you in the community reached out, and Jonathan Taylor cards DM me, and he said, we were talking about it. And he goes, last year of a legendary product and as in, as a farewell, they put the vets on their last actual teams. And I'm like, you know what? I like this.
Like, fuck it. Why not? It is fun. Tori Holt on the Jags. Like, let's go.
So, we'd just like to announce that officially on board with whatever team Prism wanted to do because, yes, last year, why not? Keyshawn on the Panthers. So I I actually found the rage against this to be hilarious in the community because most of the time, people just shit on post playing day cards, but all of a sudden, we care about what jerseys they're in. So I found that funny. Dude, this is I I I I like how Jonathan Taylor cards put it into context.
Last year, Prism. Last year, jerseys that they're wearing. And it's just unique. Like, this is different. And I don't know.
Like, I don't know who this appeases. Obviously, we've spent two or three episodes talking about it, so, like, there's something to this. But, yeah, it pops me, man. Every time I see one of these and I see, I'm like, oh, I haven't seen that yet. That is great.
There's a card that I'm gonna I'm gonna figure out. I just I actually put it on my watch list because I knew we were gonna be talking about it. Dude, I'm I'd be I'd be honest with you. I'm, like, the the terrible at trying to navigate eBay on the desktop because I'm so used to using on the phone. That's a question for you.
Like, do you use it on the your phone, or do you use it on your desktop? Phone more, but desktop, I get in there. Okay. So here's a post playing day card that dude, I just thought this was cool, man. I didn't even know.
Look at this. Oh, yeah. I saw this. Drew Brees on the chargers, twenty twenty five prism gold vinyl. That's sick.
Like It just looks cool. Like, the color scheme. Yeah. I just think that's a cool looking card. Yeah.
No. I've I'm I'm on board. Why not? Do whatever you want, like Prism. And Chris Chris Carter on the dolphins is still crazy to me, but there's someone out there who, like, who loves it.
So who who am I? Who am I to judge? Who am I to say what a set should be or shouldn't be? If it were up to me, it would've just been a bunch of bears players. So Exactly.
How do I know? I got I'll comment. My I'm I've been you know, no mistake. I was very passionate about how I felt about this set initially and said, you know what? I'll wait until I get one in hand because even though I'm like, I'm not gonna like this, it it goes against my philosophy on my collection to just ignore this set.
Mhmm. And I when I got the Alec Pearson hand, I was very impressed. And it kinda, like, made me feel really excited because I was like, you know what? Immediately, I got 2016 vibes, which I'm not a big 2016 guy. Although, I do like the 2016 Finites, but I think it's the black in the borders that, like, drew me to that.
But, dude, it was the shine, man. There's there's, like, a rainbow, like, shine to these cards that I was just, like, not expecting. And so I this is not my favorite Prism set of all time, but I it is one of those instances where my opinion shifted in a more positive light when I actually got the cards in my got a card in my possession. Yeah. That I knew that would be a determining factor.
It's like, once I get like, you can only judge so much based off, like, the spec images and all that. Like, in the spec images, you're really the emphasis is the design of the card. But, like, when it's in hand and the light's hitting it, that's that's the true test. Yeah. I'm do you like it?
Do you like 2024 better than 2025? 2024 is one of my favorite years of all time. Yeah. It's and I I can't believe I'm saying that one year removed, but they nailed it in on 2024 and kind of wish because it's so perfect in my mind that that woulda they woulda ended with that. But it's less controversial now that these cards aren't as bad as I thought they would be.
And, like, maybe it was Timmer's cards. I think it was Tim, gold vinyl advocate. He was like or maybe it was I can't remember. Somebody said this. Maybe you, Tim.
But someone was like, have you seen the gold vinyl yet? And I just showed the breeze. The gold vinyl on the the the twenty twenty fives look, it's like there's more space for the swirls. There's something going on there, but, yeah, they look they look good. Yeah.
And there's something about because Prism always does a nice job of, like, the ratio like, the size of the player is consistent across a set. So it's like in 2024, it's like close-up, waist up. In 2020, like, you see their feet, and you'd, like, see the whole player in every card. And now that and to me then, that always becomes more, like, pronounced when you see it in volume, when you see lots of different ones. So, like, when I'm looking at new 2020 fives that have hit eBay and I'm scrolling through and seeing just, like, the different players but the same, you know, kinda layout, it starts to, I feel like, grow on me a little more.
And, like, yes, the size of the player, the size of the the background leaving leading to more swirls. It's a it's a good looking set. Good good job, Prism. Yeah. Good first down.
Maybe we move on to second down, and I wanna bring this up because I will be sharing here's a teaser alert. I had I bought a post playing days card this week, and I'll talk about it at the end. But I wanted to know what are your rules, if any, on post playing day cards, and what do you think the football card community thinks about post playing day cards as a whole? Well, interesting because I too bought a post playing day card last night. You're kidding me.
No. And I wrote down rules are meant to be broken. Dude, I didn't even text you about mine because I was like, I'll just wait for the pod, and I don't wanna let any of the conversation be isolated between us. We could share them. But I mean, I feel like I early on, it was just, something that I used to give my collecting focus.
Right? And, like, I just wanted players from the days they were playing. But it also is something that I haven't experienced that much as being, like, a hurdle I'm having to encounter. Like, Priest Holmes doesn't really have post playing days cards, so I was just collecting him. Like, it it I run into it more with, like, bear stuff and, honestly, mainly Prism where you see, like, Gale Sayers is in 2014 Prism or Walter Payton makes it into 2015 Prism.
And, like, I just never went for those cards because I was like, nope. I just wanna go for the current active player. So it was a rule. I I don't even wanna say rule, though. It was just kind of a parameter that I had.
But the more I've been thinking about it lately, and this goes for all cards, is, like, each of these cards that we're buying, trying to picture it like, choose your fighter thing or, like, choose your skater in Tony Hawk where you have the different bars for different attributes, or it's like speed, power, agility, turn you know, like, all those different things. And it's like each card can kinda have that where it's like, something can rate low because it's post playing days. But if it's in the right set Yes. Or, like, the aesthetics are right or, like, the other it's like, it's got four of these bars that are all the way full, but, like, the playing days bar is low. It's like, I I can make up you know?
I could still ride with Bob Burnquist even though his whatever metric is low. Like so I don't know. I don't think it's a a hard and fast rule. I think it's nice to have some, like, parameters to try and collect. But, yeah, what what were you thinking?
I I've I've I you've just nailed, like what? So first of all, like, my first instinct is, like, when I see the card, how does it make me feel? And if I want it, like, I don't care what if it's post playing days or not. And, like, you brought up that 2015 Walter Payton, dude. Every time I see, like, that gold or, like, gold vinyl, especially because it's first year, I'm like, dude, this I was like, if I'm a bears fan, like, this this card is so sick.
So and I think about Peyton's catalog. It's like, well, his cards aren't the style and profile of cards that I collect. So this could be an exception to the rule. I think my if I'm, like, isolating it to Prism because Prism hosts a lot of post playing day cards, like, my my rule is as follows. Like, if a player appears in Prism starting in 2012 and, let's say, retires and then shows back up like the Breeze, like, I wouldn't be a buyer on that Breeze because he's already got playing date cards Right.
In Prism. But if you're a player that has is not playing or has never had Prism cards and you appear in Prism, then I'm I'm way more interested. A card that, like because I sent the set this, like, generic rule in the past of no post playing day cards, like, I think about a card like the twenty sixteen Marvin Harrison Prism. It's his only appearance in Prism, and he wasn't playing when Prism was active. So to me, like, there's an exception that could be made for a card like that based on the rules that I create for myself.
I think, like, the product really matters, like, too. It's like, I'm not gonna go off and venture off on post playing day cards of, like, sets that I'm not really into, but, like, I don't know. Like, we talk Prism a lot here because we both collect it. And so I just. It's a vast catalog.
I actually I actually dumped all of the checklist together and put it in my chat GPT, and I have a little bot now where I can just just search players through that. But, yeah, man. I think there it's it's however you wanna make it. I feel like there's, like, these vanilla rules that we all make or we hear. It's like, no post playing day cards.
Like, just do what do what you like and what resonates with you, I guess. Yeah. I think it's it's a factor of, like, any just it's an attribute of any of these cards. Like, is it numbered? Yes or no?
Is it shiny? Yes or no? Is it autographed? Yes or no? Is it sticker auto?
Yes or no? Is it jersey? You know, it's like there's all these different factors into every card, and how much weight you wanna put into that is totally up to you. Yeah. That we'll get into the maybe during pickups, what cards we got.
Cool. Third down. Third down. Let's go. Okay.
So we spent a lot of time last week talking about Sam Darnold. I feel like we were getting in all of our lack of Sam Darnold chat just for last week, and so I figured we might as well, even though we've talked about it more, talk a little Drake May on third down. So I did some data digging in CardLadder, the only one. Drake May has two six figure cards, and might as well show them $2.02 6 figure sales, which we've got oh, of course, I clicked out of it. No.
I didn't. Okay. Here we go. Here's the first one. So it says twenty twenty four national treasures, Drake May, NFL shield, one of one.
And this card sold for a $164,700 11/01/2025. I'm looking at this, and I I I meant to before this look at the set list configuration of National Treasures. You see this is an insert. It's got the DME as the, numbering. And I I wish I would have looked like, is is this the shield, or is there actually, like, a a a base set shield?
Because I was gonna dig in, but I'll do that at a later date. But this is a big sale. Then you have this card, which is, in my opinion, his best card, his 24 black finite. I mean okay. So we're talking about how much 24 kicks ass.
Dude, look at this card. Yeah. A $109,000, this card sold for in April 2026 in or 2025. What a what a buy by that person at that point to take the risk. So there's $2.06 figure sales.
Now Drake May has a 155 figure cards that have sold. A 150. What does his sales history look like if he wins a Super Bowl on Sunday in year two? What do you think happens with what these cards? Will they obviously, a lot of people will be selling Drake May cards.
Like, what's your if he wins, like, what is your perspective of what a Super Bowl win could do for a player like this? Based on my limited experience in the hobby, and now I've this is probably soup the sixth Super Bowl that I've seen as, like, a collector that kinda monitors this stuff. I feel like the prices never spike the way you think one might think they would. Even like, if Drake May wins, I bet the top of his top cards, yes, if they hit market, would sell for a lot. If that finite came to market right now, that would have to go for over 500,000, I would think, based on if made and sold for 500,000 and, which is looking like a great sale more and more by, Roth cards.
But I'm looking at and, again, I know this is a different range of cards, but his silver prism in a PSA 10, for example, over the past six months is up 209%. That has rocketed up. But over the last month, it's down 8%. Like, already, he kinda like, as he was ascending is I feel like where you see the shoot up in these prices, but then now that he's there, you seem there's more supply. Like, the the, you know, the supply increases.
And for these ultramodern players, there is so much supply. So I don't know. I would always just even if he wins, I'd be curious, I guess, to see what his his current Prism Silver PSA 10 is $1,600 right now. Pop 640. You know, that like, that's just a pretty liquid card that kinda shows this like, what a a fixed price is that, we we can watch, you know, transact several times a day and see the market moving.
I don't know if that would shoot up that much more. Like, maybe it goes up to, like, 4,500 even. But, yeah, I I don't know. I think yeah. I think it's hard to say.
I just do think there's so much supply out there for these new players where if he wins, the market will just get flooded with his stuff, which then makes it harder for the prices to go up. I think you nailed it. The the rare and scarce cards will continue to elevate in value. And then for the time being we saw this with Mahomes, Super Bowls, the liquid stuff goes down because there's an over there's a flood that hits the marketplace. So And yeah.
Even Mahomes, his charts are always interesting where, like, after the first Super Bowl, like, I feel like Mahomes didn't really establish himself as this, like, collector staple until he won even in maybe his third, the third one. Like, the second one, yes, for sure helped, obviously. But then, like, after he won three, it's like, okay. This guy's resume is already one of the best ever. Like, you saw more like, I feel like a a steady floor established with Mahomes.
But, like, if Drake May I don't know who's to say like, if the Patriots win the Super Bowl, but Drake May doesn't win Super Bowl MVP and plays bad, and then next year is death. You know? You think that is a scenario that's possible? Not against the seahawks, though. But I'm thinking of and this is all personal experience.
When I got back into the hobby, I bought a bunch of Matt Stafford cards because he was went to the Rams. I was like, they're they could win the Super Bowl, and I want Stafford cards. And they won the Super Bowl, and I lost a bunch of money on those cards. And, like, him not winning Super Bowl MVP, I think, hurt his case there. I think, like, that that was a factor that people it was still a knock on him.
Like, oh, you weren't the undeniable reason they won the Super Bowl. I think now people are looking and they talk about, like, the no look pass and all that. Like, he's now that it's been a few years. But at the time, it wasn't like we won because of Matthew Stafford. So I don't know.
I don't know what'll happen. This I can't wait for the Super Bowl, though. This is gonna be fun to watch, and then it is gonna be very fun to watch the ramifications throughout the hobby. Should should we do picks? Sure.
It's what people are here for. Where where where are you where are you at right now? What are you where are you what are you going with? Where are how are you feeling? I think the seahawks are gonna win.
I think they're just a really good team all the way around, and I think the patriots are, you know, younger, fresher. Seahawks are young and fresh too, but I don't know. I just it feels like the seahawks, and it's easy to say because they're the favorites, but I wouldn't be surprised either way. I would not be shocked if the patriots win. So I don't know.
I'm not a I'm a terrible sports gambler and a sports picker. So, like, whatever I pick, just fade me, and you you'll be fine. I just love the over. I just love an over. I'll bet the over, and we're gonna get a 13 to three game.
That's what's gonna happen. I I hope the over hits. This has been the one of the more harder ones for me to try to figure out what I'm gonna do. I'll say this. You stack up the rosters next to each other.
The seahawks roster, I think, is far superior. I think the seahawks at almost every phase of the game has more talent, has more depth. I feel like this year and maybe it was because my team with a old ass quarterback lost to them in their home by three last second field goal. I've always, like, discounted the seahawks. Although this playoffs oh my god, man.
The seahawks are really freaking good. But, dude, I think a star is born, man. I think we're hitting the patriots holding it up again as much as it pains me to say. I just think this is Drake May, man. You've got Josh Allen who can't get there.
You've got no Patrick Mahomes. I I just feel like a star is born. This is Drake May, and we are stuck with Vrabel and Drake May competing for or getting to the Super Bowl for the foreseeable future. It is unbelievable to me that they're there with the the roster that they have, and it's good. But it it's just it's like it it doesn't hit you over the face.
And I just think I don't know, man. Mike Vrabel's unbelievable. Drake May, I think, is going to figure I just feel like this is, like, on this stage. Not discounting anything from the seahawks. They're a wonderful team, and they're favored, and they probably should win, but just something inside of me is telling me to pick the patriots right now.
Yeah. The it it's like the I kinda talked about this on another episode of, like, envisioning it. Like, I can clearly see Drake May and Vrabel on the podium with a Super Bowl trophy. I can't see Sam Darnold and Mike Mcdon you know, it just, like, doesn't it's like when the seahawks played the steelers. It's like this legacy franchise, legendary head coach, and, like, versus this up like, this team that had I I know the seahawks have won a Super Bowl since then, but I don't know.
There's just I can clearly see the patriots winning it. The seahawks would be more of a stretch even though they're favored. I don't know. I don't know. It's crazy.
It's gonna be a good game. It is. I just want a good game. I want a good game. Don't give me a just blowout one way or the other.
Give me a good football game. This is the last one for months. This is It it feels it feels like if it is a blowout, then it's going to be seahawks. Right? I could see the seahawks blowing out the patriots.
I can't see the patriots blowing out the seahawks. I can see the patriots winning a nail biter. Yes. Like That's how I old like old patriot like, the start Brady's first Super Bowl, like, first three like, the field goal games. I could see one of those.
Should we get get into MarketWatch? Yeah. Let's do it. Alright. Shout out MarketWatch presented by CardLadder.
We have a 1965 Fred Belitnikov Wow. PSA eight. Little vintage football card talk here. This sold on eBay for $2,358. This is a pop 71.
There are three eight fives, and there is three nines. But, dude, I saw this card, and I was like, man, this is a great football card. And he's one of those players that I've heard a lot about, obviously, and just haven't done any digging. So we've got he's a Super Bowl champion, AFL champion, Super Bowl MVP, two time first team all pro. He is was the NFL reception leaders.
He was a consensus all American in 1964 and had his Seminoles jersey. He went to Florida State honored. He also had a a coaching stint after that where he coached in the USFL, coached in the Canadian League, had a stint coaching in the NFL. So just a a contributor to the game, and this card is awesome. Just green background, portrait shot, Oakland on top.
It's just a I mean, it's just a sick looking card. So I I saw this, and I was like, oh, we wanna talk about this. We haven't talked a little vintage in a while. So here is your Fred Belitnikov card. That's a great looking vintage football card.
Yeah. And anytime you have an award named after you, you must have done something right. So Good call out. Award is the to the best receiver in college football every year. So I was like, oh, he must have put up crazy stats in college.
Not really. But for the time, maybe. His best season was 1964 at Florida State, 988 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. But it was a different game back then, so not gonna hold that against old Freddie boy. But some winners of that award, there's a couple back to back winners.
There's only two players that have won the award back to back, and the the award started in 1994. Can you maybe guess who the two college receivers to win the award back to back were? That's a great question. Okay. I've they are they do they feel obvious or no?
That's one qualifying question. In hindsight, yes. Like, better college careers than procreers. I'll say that. That's what I need.
And it happened between 2000 and 2015. So in that window, both of these guys won back to back. Oh, wow. Peter Work? No.
No Work. So 2007, 2008, Michael Crabtree. Michael Crabtree. Okay. And then 2010 and 2011, Justin Blackman.
You're kidding. Wow. I forgot how good Justin Blackman was. He dominated. He was so good.
Another yeah. His second year, his sophomore year at, Oklahoma State, 1,700 yards, 20 touchdowns. And then have the do you have the list up right now? Yeah. Who who who are the last four winners?
Makai Lemmon from USC most recently, Travis Hunter before that, Marvin Harrison junior before that, and Jalen Hyatt before that. Wow. And to keep going, Jordan Addison, Davonta Smith, Ja'Mar Chase, Jerry Judy, James Washington, Didi Westbrook. I forgot about Didi Westbrook. What a name.
Corey Coleman, Amari Cooper, Brandon Cooks, Marquis Lee, Blackman, Golden Tate, your boy, in 2009. He dominated. Calvin Johnson, o six. I wanted to guess Calvin Johnson, but when Yeah. You said that, I was like, yeah.
But, I mean, always yeah. Randy Moss won it. Larry Fitzgerald won it. Charles Rogers. I thought Charles Rogers was gonna be so good.
Everybody did. The lions definitely did. Yeah. That was when they were drafting receivers top five, like, three years straight. Do you remember the do you remember the I don't know why this whenever I hear his name, I think about the draft day Madden commercials where they are Charles Rogers?
Yeah. You remember him, like Charles Rogers. Yeah. Catches a 13 touchdown. Yeah.
How is that stuck in our head after all of these years? That jingle alone is the reason I almost he his, like, o five finest gold extractor has been sitting on eBay. Dude, I know. Forever. Forever.
I think it's gone now. I sent it to every Lions collector I know. And I almost just because I was like, that would be fun to post it on Instagram and then have a reason to post that that clip. Wow. That those yeah.
And Ray Lewis is yelling at him. He's like, sing it, Rook. Because he's like, oh, alright. I'll clip that. I'm putting it in the the carousel.
Dude, who who who would have thought that a Bolitnikov 65 tops could take us all the way into Charles Rogers Madden jingle spot? I I love football, man. Oh, it's the best. Alright. We're moving on.
We leave a little vintage, and we head on over to the Kaboom Room. You ready to enter? I'm in it. I'm already there. You mentioned Roth cards earlier.
This guy had a big sale on eBay. 2025 kaboom vertical one of one, PSA eight, Josh Allen. $90,000 on eBay, dude. Wow. Okay.
So this sale obviously happened after Josh Allen lost in the playoffs again. So this is like dude, the kaboom takeover is unbelievable. But when you're selling the I don't know how many kabooms he has or how many one of one kabooms he has, but this thing sold for 90 k, dude. Outrageous. Insane, man.
Kabooms. Kabooms. Green kabooms are the card. I mean, based on even just recent, like, JSN, his finite sold, and we have that data point. And then his green kabooms are he has a vertical and a horizontal have both eclipsed what his black finite rookie sold for.
So the market is telling us that the green kaboom is, like, the number one premier rookie card, for these players. I mean, that these are insane. These, like, not even rookie green kabooms like the Shay 2024 green kaboom. I know that's basketball, sold for $432,000 a couple weeks ago. I mean, these are just massive, massive cards.
So, honestly, seeing Shay sell for 400,000, and that's post playing days. Josh Allen, 90 k. Could seem like a deal. Like, I don't know. Both MVPs.
It's just Josh Allen hasn't won yet, but, yeah, the and I love these ones. I do love the twenty twenty five. I think they look cool. I like how cartoony they are. I would love to own one of a player that I collect, but I just don't have the, resources to do that.
So and just, yeah, it's just a a different stratosphere, but I think these are cool cards, but I can't believe how much they're selling for. Investigative reporting here in the off season around the Kaboom, I think that might be worth it. And we're gonna move up. We're gonna stay in the Kaboom room. We've got a 25 absolute cartoony Kaboom gold of Drake Mana BGS nine five.
This bad boy sold for $31,000 via best offer on February 1. So timely, topical, Drake May kaboom. Here you have it, the golds, baby. So that's his second year, gold kaboom. He's on for 30.
His rookie gold prism is also, like, recently sold under 30. So people this is more valuable than his rookie gold prism. It's like, why? Why is that? I wonder.
Is it the just the name kaboom is more, you know, renowned in the hobby where, like I feel like everyone in the hobby knows what a kaboom is. Like, even, like, new entrants into the hobby right away know what kabooms and downtowns are before they know maybe what a gold prism is. Mhmm. These these are the these are the the props that are used to pull people in to the hobby on through digital marketing, through content. This is what you're seeing on YouTube.
This is what's transacted at the trade show. They these are the cards. And that's that's I I wanted, I wanted, like, explore how we got there with with this. And I'm not trying to disparage them. I I'm not I'm not into them.
Mostly, I'm not into them because I I collect, like, base set parallels. That's what I collect, and this is not that. So I don't have any interest in it. And that's almost like a hard and fast rule in my collection. Now there might be some exceptions.
But for the most part, like, I just based on the way I think about cards, I I could just never justify paying the prices that they command because they don't align with my philosophy on how I wanna build my collection. And, again, that's not disparaging these cards. It's just not for me. But I I think when you get into the territory of the golds where the the gold kaboom is outselling, you know, the gold prism, I think, to me, that's a moment where you just really need to take a step back and try to understand, like, how did we get here, and why is this selling, and start asking the questions. And I think it's undeniable.
Like, the there isn't again, and I'm not trying to disparage them. There is not a card in the Panini era that has more hype than these cards and more people talking about these cards. And I think a part of that is and I think as I'm trying to do this discovery myself in real time, you have access to more of these copies, not the golds, not the greens. But just in general, there's a supply of them. And that supply of them can you're you're seeing them.
They're more prevalent, so you can use them to kind of show people that they are more accessible and that accessibility is and the desire to be able to get a regular Kaboom, you know, it brings people into the Kaboom pipeline where then they eventually kinda mature and want a gold or a green, where as a gold prism, there's only 10 copies. So you there's less kind of maneuvering you can do in mess less marketing around those cards because some might appear via auction, others might just be stashed away in collections. So I don't know. It's an interesting, interesting exercise. I do think that they need to be talked about because they're monster sales and football cards.
And, dude, like, five years ago, we didn't have these types of sales anywhere, and now they're happen happening regularly. So it's it's it's interesting for sure. Yeah. We touched on this last episode with the twenty fourteen Prism Gold Brady sale. But the just the title, how did we get here that this card sold raw in 2016 for a $100?
A card that someone bought for $100, ten years later, sold for $100,000. Just like, how how did that happen? Like, let's peel back the layers and, like you know? Okay. What happened in 2016?
Then 2017. Like, that we'll get into that in the off season. Crazy. Crazy sales. But Let's move over to the nineties.
1999 Skybox Metal Universe, Peyton Manning, p precious metal gems out of 50 BGS eight. Always thought this was a good looking, Manning card. Sold for $10,685 via auction. One thing I noticed is that an eight five in July sold for 15 k. So I don't know what that means.
That was an auction too. But I think to me, it's like the demand for these types of cards. Like, the people who want these cards, a lot of people have these cards. But, you know, when these cards go up for auction, you know, it's you're not you're not getting, like, the next one's always gonna beat the other one even though the grade's a little different on this one. But I it's just my one of the observations I've been making on 90 stuff.
It's just like, I think it's very much around, like, who actually wants that card for in their collection in that moment, and I've been observing that with, like, PMGs and some Ruby stuff as I've been digging into the data. Yeah. That's a good call. That and that idea of, like, the one piece stuff, for example, or, like, the high high pop Pokemon stuff where there's, like, 2,000 PSA tens of some of these cards that are selling regularly for, like, $56,000. I'm like, how is the demand always there every single day that there's someone who, like there's not a day that everyone's, like, not on eBay or that the people who needed this missed it.
And it's like I don't know, man. Yeah. I think there's a lot of probably artificial propping of markets that happens. Maybe on that front, I would say, for more high pop cards, possibly. I'm not accusing anything.
But for, like, this card, yeah, I don't know if it's, because I'm looking a PSA eight sold in October for $20,000. I did not see that. That's a whole other story of the PSA premiums too with these cards, which I'll get if I'll if you only listen to one thing on stacking slabs every week and this type of thread interests you, I will have released an episode with Andy at Buy Buy Baby Cards that will already be in the feed. Go listen to it because this guy is one of my favorite collectors. He knows more about nineties cards than most people.
He actively buys and get get his he shares his observations on, like, what he's saying, and I just think he provides a lot of good context, especially if, like, you are actively buying in nineties or you were thinking about buying in nineties. I would I would listen to him because he he shares a lot from what he sees and how his collection's evolving in in real time in on this front. But a lot of this stuff is stuff I I hadn't even thought about. But Yeah. The premium of the PSA premium is is one specifically that triggered it in my mind.
Yeah. I'm excited to listen to that. What else we got? Yes. We got a couple more.
How about this? This is right up your alley. O two finest Randy Moss gold refractor PSA 10. This thing sold at auction for $9,900, a monster sale, which makes it the highest selling. I think it's the only PSA 10 that's ever sold publicly, but it's it's the highest selling.
The last, you have a PSA nine selling for 2,300 in August '24. You had a PSA nine in February '25 sell for 1,600, and this PSA 10 selling for 9 almost $10. There are five PSA tens. But, yeah, this card is amazing looking. Like, incredibly like, the way the gold is presented, and it matches his gold trim on his jersey, like, just one of the sharpest moss cards you're gonna see.
But, yeah, dude, this is kinda your lane. So what what do you think about this sale? Yeah. This this card rules. Does this make my David Boston worth?
What does this make my David Terrell worth? That's what everyone's asking. That's what everyone's asking. I can't I never thought I'd see these cards get to this to five figures. Like Brady, yeah, and maybe Manning, but Moss Moss has his own collector base.
And, I don't know. Awesome card. And then I saw because I monitor the 2002 just refractor, the 2002 finest refractor market really well because I'm, like, trying to collect all the veterans from that. And a a Randy Moss raw just sold last night for a $181 at, like, couple days then after this sale where that card before was I think I got one for $50, like, a couple months ago. You know?
Like, there Wow. There there's interest in this, set, and I think it's growing because of some of these huge sales. I mean, we saw the Mannings Manning Gold sold for, I think, 10 k recently. So yeah. I mean, it makes sense, though.
I get it. These cars are awesome. They are awesome. Last card, this is your pick. Oh, yeah.
A car a card you probably wanted in your collection is the 25 prism gold Coulson Loveland. This sold via best offer for $2,150. And, dude, what a, like, second half and playoff run for Loveland. Great player. I think I think it's finally time to put to bed bed the, like, Loveland Warren debate.
Like, can we just say they're both really exceptional tight ends who will likely be along with Brock Bauer, the tight ends that we're all talking about for the next ten years? Like I hope so. Great I I I've seen I think I've seen enough Yeah. For for both of them. I think Loveland, it's like, you know better than me, but it's like when they decide when, like, Caleb built that trust, they decided to, like, feature him more.
It's like he just kept stepping up to the plate and, obviously, he had a remarkable playoff game, but it's a monster sale. Will this card hold at that price? That's the question we're asking. But, like, what was going on in your head when you saw this one? Yeah.
Just I had to remind myself patience. Patience is a virtue. Because, yeah, $2,100 for the gold out of 10 feels crazy to me. Raw copy. Raw copy.
First one to sell. Like and, again, these are all things I'm telling myself to make myself feel better. If I had bought it, I'd be like, hell, this is I don't care. I want the card. But I love this card.
I like the picture. I like that it's, I want one, but I'm just having to remind myself that there are nine more copies out there and that, yeah, there more will become available as the months go on, and I'll have opportunities to maybe try and get one of these. I think back two years ago no. 24 Prism. I bought a Roma Dunze gold vinyl rookie very early on because I was like, I have to act now.
Like, I'm never gonna see these again. And there's two sitting on eBay right now. And I know Rome hasn't had this. There's more hype around Colston Loveland right now than Roma Dunze. But at the time, I felt like I had to buy that because I didn't know when I'd ever see one again.
And then even the ones that are available right now, I've seen other ones pop up. I've seen true goals pop up. Like, there are copies out there that will continue to show up. So this is definitely an interesting sale to look at and just I love this part of Prism, the this part of the Prism release where it's like we're slowly learning what the values are for other players based on other you know, it's like, alright. This is a new data point of reference for us as we're trying to determine what we wanna pay for other things.
Like, if Colson Loveland's 2,100, Warren is probably the same. Like or, like, you know, you start to it's like in Grand Theft Auto when the map starts to unblur a little bit, or it's like, alright. We're seeing we're getting a full scope of what values are in this release. And, currently, it's looking like it's pretty pricey. I think Prism has, and the buyer pool like, part of that is because the buyer pool.
Like, right now, I think a lot of people looking to make money are also interested in a Colson Loveland card. Like, I wouldn't be shocked if it's a bears collector who bought this, but I also wouldn't be shocked if it's someone who thinks that they can buy it, grade it, sell it for more, or just, like, buy it, hold it, and sell it to National in Chicago right before football season. You know, there's all sorts of strategies and thoughts and different players, who are in this market. So we'll see. I don't know what it what it means yet.
It's just a card I want that's selling for more than I wanna pay right now, but I'll get one one day. Patience is a virtue. Have to keep telling myself too as this Prism release drops. Shout out Card Ladder, Market Watch. Always fun to dig into the sales.
Yep. Alright. Collecting updates. What who are we buying? Who's what was your post playing days card?
I need to know. Why don't you why don't you go first? Because I'm trying to get get it ready here. Well, I dipped my toe in twenty twenty five Prism. Lance Briggs, 2025 Prism Gold smashed bin last night, $25.
Oh, that's that's a no brainer, man. That's what I'm talking about. Exactly. Briggs is in 2012 Prism, and then I think he's in '13. But, yeah, just I love Lance Briggs.
Was a great player. Not a lot of cards out there of him. So when I saw and I was just fiending to buy a gold prism from '25. You know, I'm checking save searches all the time. And when that $25, instant smash, I hope it gets shipped out.
Part of me was like, this guy, I bought it so fast. You know, sometimes it feels like if you buy something too fast, they might be like, wait. Did I have something? Did I mess up and sell this too cheap? So we'll see we'll see if it shows up.
But, yeah, that's my big post playing days card is, Lance Briggs '20 25 Prism Gold. Not in hand yet. So I'm gonna check her right now even if he printed the shipping label yet. Yeah. I don't know.
What about you? So mine is here it is. It's the 2015 Oh, Rod Rod Woodson Gold Prism. And I'm gonna talk to you about why I bought this card. So I was just going through my search searches on eBay.
This card presented itself. It was listed at one ninety nine ninety nine. And I just looked at it, and I was like, man, Rod Woodson. I'm I'm up forever Rod Woodson guy. He's Fort Wayne, Indiana guy Mhmm.
From the Hoosier State. We've talked about his career, how prolific it it was. And did the move the what got me to pull the trigger on this was the is this Rod Woodson's first appearance in Prism? That question. And when I discovered that that question was yes, I was like, to me, this seems like a great deal.
And so I love 2015, the most professional looking Prism set of all time. Rod Woodson, gold prism, steelers. Like, is this a card I'm gonna keep in my collection forever? I don't I don't know. But to me, it was like all the stars aligned around this card.
And to me, I just said 200 for this card, and it's just sitting out here. Like, sure. And so, yeah, I'm I'm excited for this. And I, you know, I don't veer too off off path on the cold stuff, but I'm a Prism simp. And sometimes you see cards that you want.
And, again, like, back to the the the peanut card where he had the ball in his hands. Like, Woodson's got the ball in his hands in his card. So he's making freaking plays. It's got the 75 he's they're in the unique like, I don't know what year the Steelers wore these jerseys, but you can see the seventy five year patch on his jersey too. It's just like it's awesome.
So, yeah, this was the card that I and it I wasn't playing on it. It just popped up, and I just did some research and started thinking about it. There's nothing better than when a card pops up and you're excited about it and wondering what is reasonable to pay for it. And you're searching and you find that that one piece of evidence that that, like, breaks the case wide open where you're like, oh, I can buy this. I can bid it.
Like, I'm allowed to bid it because of this piece of evidence that has made my whole case like, it's a con it's a flawless conviction right here. Like, not only would I because at first, you're on the fence. Like, is 200 too much? Like, I don't know. And then you build up the case, and then you're like, 200 is too cheap.
What am I doing? I I paid this is a $500 card. Well, I'm I'm certainly getting this card. I don't even this card is going to be graded by PSA. Like, I'm gonna get this card graded.
And, regardless of the grade, it's just like I I asked myself this question. Like, I want this card right now, and I'm not a Steelers fan. I'm a Prism fan, but I respect Woods. And it's like, all the different factors on, like, why we want cards. It's like, you you you can't tell me that, like, there's not other people who, if I need to down the road sell this card, aren't going to want this card.
Like and I don't know. I I love DB cards too. I think they're fun. There's not many of them throughout the history of Prism. I mean, there are them, but I would say lower percentage.
So it just hit on all these elements and just do a little research. It's like, yeah. I'm gonna smash Ben on this thing. That's awesome. One other collecting update.
So I was on eBay, and, again, I'm collecting 2,002 finest. I love that set. I'm trying to get refractors of all the all the veterans. And I have I was at 52 out of 62 is where I stand stood before yesterday. A Kurt Warner popped up.
I needed a Kurt Warner. I start offering with the guy. I think it was listed for 40 OBO. I offered 25. A PSA nine had just sold for 30.
So which that PSA nine for 30, I wish I would've bought that. Like, that I would rather had that. But, I gotta I gotta pull up the messages. But this popped up for, how do you find messages on eBay? There we go.
Some Always a challenge. Yeah. Yeah. It's buried by notifications. So I sent an offer of 25.
They countered with 31, and I just sent a message. I was like, PSA nine just sold for 30. 25 would be my highest for a rock copy. Thanks, John. And the guy responds, wait.
Are you the football card podcast guy? I was just listening while cleaning. And I was like, yep. That's me. Thanks for list you know?
We started talking. And yeah. So shout out Unicorn Markets. That's their eBay name, but, great to see the that people listen to this podcast. Like, that was just weird to me because some I feel like 15 people listen to this.
So to just some stranger on eBay listens to the football card pod is, pretty awesome in my estimation. There, in doing this for as long as I've doing done this, you think you know who's all listening, and you don't even know a percent like, shout out to all of you people out there who I've never interacted with, but you appreciate content on this show or broader Stacking Slabs network. I appreciate all of you, and especially if you're, recognizing, one of the hosts here on through an eBay deal. Amazing. So we we love all the listeners out there.
We appreciate you. Yeah. That blew my mind. And then one other purchase I had because I'm a sicko. Because, again, I like collecting early two thousands playing days because I also like just remembering when I was, like, in middle school, high school watching, you know, ESPN every morning or just playing fantasy, playing Madden.
So I just bought this fantasy sports magazine with priest homes on the cover. The high priest should be the number one pick. Or Ladanian Tomlinson, would you pick him number one? Just like a nice capture the moment in time when Priest Holmes was, like, the greatest running back in the NFL. So I have a bunch of old Becketts from, like, 2003 too because it's just I don't know.
I love going back and reading stuff like that. So, that's what I've been up to on a purchasing front. Awesome. This has been a fun episode, man. Yeah.
Very good. Card call out. Favorite plays from the season, we asked to see that last episode, some awesome awesome submissions, And some and this is a reminder. If you send a player who has the jersey number of the episode, I will always repost that as well. And there were a couple good 30 that people sent in.
So 30, send in your number 30. And then what do we wanna do for card call out? I had longest card in the collection as an option. We could do newest card in the collection, just latest pickup that people wanna share. We could do post plain days cards.
I feel like that would be That's been the theme of this episode, dude. Let's do that. Let's do it. Post plain day cards. Let's see them.
Forget whatever anyone in the hobby might say. We want to see post playing days cards. And if you already have a 2025 prism, like one of these Chris Carter on the dolphins or Corey Holt on the jags, bonus points, Take a picture. Post it to your story. Tag the football card pod on Instagram.
We will reshare it. Thank you all for listening. We'll see you next week.
