The Football Card Podcast #19: Bowman U, Black Finites, and the NFL’s Big What-Ifs
Hello, and welcome to the Football Card Podcast, the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered around football cards and, most importantly, football cards.
You made it. It's Friday. We're here. Happy Halloween. I'm your host, John, AKA Pat Nicholson.
With me, as always, is Brett, mister stacking slabs himself, and a very special guest, Josh, AKA Cardboard Chronicles is joining us today. Brett, Josh, how you guys doing? I can't complain. I'm happy to have a three man booth here.
It's just a football card, podcast. First, and why not do it on Halloween. I've been trying to get my wife to dress up like, Carly or say Gordon, for Halloween based on all of the outfits and what she's been doing on the sidelines.
But I'm getting the Heisman to the face, denial. I'm guessing it probably has something to do with her being seven months pregnant. So she doesn't wanna have anything to do with my fun and games, but that's why we're here.
So, Josh, welcome, man. Glad to have you on this app. Absolutely honored to be the first guest in the show. And you guys run a great two man show here, so please do not let me get in the way.
I'm terrified of ruining the show, so don't let me. We're we'll see when we get to the dynamic kickoff how you are in, you know, special teams as a I'm really good at I'm really good at shutting up, so you'll see.
Just block. Episode 19 season two episode seven, the 19 episode. So we got some nineteens to talk about. But before that, none of this none of this is possible without our wonderful sponsors.
So, Brett, who should we thank? Of course, we're gonna thank, Josh and team at Card Ladder for being the official data provider of the Football Card Podcast.
We would not be able to do these episodes without Card Ladder. It's a huge part of what we do. Also, big shout out to our good friends at Haystack. Haystack has an awesome free product, Breakers Connect product.
It's free. Users who participate in breaks with Haystack's partners receive receive same day images of their hits and ability to list, grade, or share cards immediately after the breaks.
And I'll say this. I don't do this often, but I've already been messaging some, of my contacts who own stores who will be breaking a specific product, this weekend.
And I was like, are you doing pick your own team's brakes? And they're like, yep. And I was like, alright. Let me know the prices. So I'm like a once a year buying a brakes guy.
So, we'll talk a little bit more of about that. But, yeah, shout out sponsors. Let's go. We're breaking something. We're gonna break something. Every week. It's happening. Nineteens. Not a lot of great nineteens out there.
I'm just gonna cut to the chase, but, the number one hall of famer list has to be Johnny Unitas, legendary Baltimore colt from the Baltimore franchise before they were stolen in the middle of the night.
Lance Allworth, another 19 who I've chosen Lance as our new segment, say something nice about an old guy.
Lance Allworth was kind of a beast. Six straight first team all pros. That's legit. Granted, it was in the AFL where there are only, like, 10 teams at the time.
But, from 63 through 68, first team all pro at receiver, best season, 1,602 yards, 14 touchdowns, but just solid numbers and a great pro football reference page.
Lot of bold numbers, lot of great seasons in a row, so that is definitely a player I've gotta give tip my hat to. And then I looked up his highest selling card of all time, $7,015 in August for his 1963 FLIR and a PSA nine.
I have a Brett, can you pull up that card? Or I guess it doesn't matter. But, the something that stood out to me on the card is his position is flanker back. Yes. And just what happened to the flanker back? Bring back the flanker back.
I was yeah. I wanna say this because, this I was just, like, as you were talking, I was doing a quick search in card ladder, and you mentioned his name. And I appreciate everybody who always, like, comes to me with Johnny Unitas cards.
Certainly an all time great. I don't associate with Unitas, though, based on his Baltimore nature. It's just I know it's the same logo, but I'm not a United's collector. I know there's a lot of United's collectors out there.
And so maybe because when I think of a a little vintage, little vintage football talk, I United's is one of those first guys that comes to my mind always, and since it's '19 and since I would say he's probably the most prolific number 19.
Dude, I was looking in card ladder. Dude. Okay. So this is a card everyone thinks about when they see United, and this is 57 tops.
You got that just crew cut, and then just the or the flat top and just the cock back getting ready to throw it. Dude, this card, it's a pop nine. It this is a PSA nine.
It's sold for a $167,000. This wasn't during the pandemic in 2016. So that it was a heritage auction listing, but I just think that's phenomenal. It's like, who knew in 2016 people were buying 57 Unitas PSA nines for a 167 k.
That's insane. What does that sell for now? Like, has one sold since then? That's a good let's let's just do, I guess, a look. Yeah. '57 tops. 2019. 2019. That's the last time it sold?
Yeah. Click the view sales of card and do same grade on the right. Mhmm. Click that one. Oh, yeah. Same same grade, and then sort by date instead of price. Very good. It's like he works at card ladder or something. Wow.
Wow. Okay. That's over $82,000. That's What would the what was the United United's bubble in 2016, 2017? Some sort of spike. There are there are some United's experts out there, and maybe they can help us understand that at some point.
But, yeah, that's remarkable. I wanted to mention in terms of number 19 when I saw this, Unitas was first to my mind, but not too far after that was, I'm gonna share my screen again, was, Joe Montana on the Chiefs.
And it's because of this game. I had this I have it up on the screen. I had a Sega in my room, and this is the Joe Montana football. It's, the the Sega version, and it's from 1994.
And Montana's on the front and his Chiefs gear rocking the '19. But I I I should have looked gotten a back, turnaround photo of this, but, like, I can visually remember, like, the boxes of players on the back of it.
But I played this game so much, and, like, '94 was, like, formative years for me. And I was, like, really young, but remembered, Montana on the forty niners, and of course, forty niners legend, one of the greatest players ever.
But for whatever reason, like, I although it was not, like, the the the best stint ever, I recall him because of this game on the Chiefs.
So this is, I think, a first and maybe, Randy Moss when we hit the eighty fourth episode, we'll get an eighteen and eighty four. But this is the first time a player has shown up, with two different numbers.
And I feel like Joe Montana is a good first player to show up in the sixteenth episode, and then again in the nineteenth. I don't know. We had Kurt Warner. Episode ten and thirteen.
We we it's we it's like we need a, professional producer for the football card podcast. Need a stats guy. Need a fact checker. Josh, are you interested in coming on full time? That sounds like a Chris job for stats.
Josh, any nineteens come to mind when you think of that that lovely number? I wrote down three, and you guys know I'm gonna bring the fantasy focus to the show. That's that's how I that's how I center my football life.
So I wrote down Adam Thielen who had, like, that crazy two to three year run where nobody was drafting him in fantasy, but he had these monster seasons where he was winning leagues.
Mhmm. I have Deebo Samuel. He's since changed his number, but some formative years of the Niners, number 19. And my favorite, Amari Cooper. Same rookie year as Todd Gurley 2015.
I love all his rookie cards, and he had some great years in, Oakland and Dallas with 19. Yeah. I feel like 19 is full of those, like, mid middling receivers kinda what what was the was it, like, 14 that has, like, Darnold and Cousin?
Like, there was a tier a number that had, like, a tier of quarterbacks that I'm like, oh, they they match up with the 19 receiver class very well.
Yeah. The first one that came to my mind was Eddie Royal for the Bears just because I don't know.
He played one year and wore 19. But, He's got a 2012 Prizm, I think. He does on the Chargers, I believe. Yes. I wanna shout I I wanna shout out, by the way, I wanna shout out since his name was brought up.
Josh, you mentioned Amari Cooper. Shout out Amari Cooper 19 p c on Instagram. Like, I love player collectors, and this dude is just, like, fanatical about Amari Cooper, and his collection is unreal.
So I always love pointing people to, like, really strong player collector pages because it allows you to see pro like, product history over the course of a player like Cooper, who was a rookie in '20 what was it?
'14 or fifth '15? '60? '15, I think. '15.
His name is Gurley, Josh said. Yeah. Oh, that's right. So you get you get ten years of Cooper. So go go give, Amari Cooper 19 PC a follow. And, two more. Keyshawn Johnson, Super Bowl champion. Keyshawn Johnson, three time pro bowler.
And Ted Ginn, Ted Ginn junior, just had me thinking of like, last week was Jeremy Macklin. Ted Ginn was kind of the next iteration of that, just electric college gadget guy that like Tavon Austin.
Those guys never seem to, like, fully work out, but one day they will. One day someone will come and fully be that gadget player in the NFL. My brother-in-law was an IU football player.
When IU sucked really bad, he was on defense, and he they mentioned when they played Ohio State, he was just like, I've I've never been in the same, like, space or seen anyone in my life as fast as Ted again.
He, like, talked about, like, a kickoff return, and he was, I think, playing special teams or something. But he was just like I I was like, I couldn't even see him.
That's how fast he was flying. There's literally a sentence on his Wikipedia that says one of the most memorable moments in his freshman season was in a 37 win 30 to seven win over Indiana.
A path at the beginning of the first quarter was tipped by a diving Buster Larkins.
Is that your brother-in-law? Hey. Do you know what's crazy about that? Buster Larkins is a cathedral grad where I went to high school, and he played football with my brother.
So this is all coming full circle. There we go. Tipped by a diving Buster Larkins only to be grabbed by Ginn. He then broke four tackles on his way to a 59 yard touchdown.
Yeah. He's pretty good. Yeah. And then he him same year as the Bears Colts Super Bowl. He returned that national championship kickoff, the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Florida, and then they got smoked.
And Hester had his return as well. So if there was, like, a Mount Rushmore of special teams, obviously, you think about, like, some of the the Venetary Super Bowl kicks, but I would that like, o six, man.
You're getting national championship return. You're getting Super Bowl return. That's probably sitting in a George Washington spot. That's, yeah, a a Mount Rushmore of special team years. Yes. Exactly. Someone make that graphic for us.
Alright. Nineteens. Solid. Actually, we dug a little deeper than I thought. For a second, I was like, why even talk about any of these guys? But they're all worthy on the here on the Football Card podcast.
New releases? What's coming out? Yeah. Shout out Haystack, for sponsoring the new release, section. We're actually going Collegiate, which is the first time we've done this.
And we're doing this because this is one of my favorite products that drops all year. I try not to talk too much about it, but I'm going to because it's release day.
But I this is a product I love, and I I can't wait to bring you all into it to talk about it and ask you some questions. But we have the release of 2025, Bowman University football. I am a big Notre Dame fan.
This allows me to collect Notre Dame players. Also, what I love about this, this is retailing a hobby box at a $159. 95. So that's just like, you can go out and buy a HobbyBox, rip it, and not feel terrible about yourself.
I I know people are into the autographs. I'm like a no sticker autograph guy, so I I mostly just like the non autograph stuff, super fractures, and out of five.
Also been listening to Ryan Card Collector two and Gabey Card Stacks. They have a whole segment about college football collecting on Ryan's content, and they've been sharing a lot of really good information.
But I learned that out of the first so there's a 200 player checklist. And out of the first, there's a 179 of the players are first, which is awesome.
And that is a great direction, because so often, like, these players get repeated. And sometimes they're in, like, three years of Bowman Chrome, and I don't know. I just to me, it's a first product.
So you've got this year, you've got a Fernando Mendoza, who's I use quarterback, who it's just so weird. I, like, showed it to my wife. Topps promoted the product on their Instagram page, and, like, Mendoza was the example.
So it's just I'm it's still kinda weird to have an an an IU being as good as they are. And then also, having, you know, the quarterback being one of the featured guys in the set.
Our house is divided over here. We've got half IU and, half Notre Dame. So when they played each other last year, I was there. I had to get out of the house because I couldn't deal with it, at all.
But you've got Bryce Underwood from Michigan, and, you know, just a lot of other players. What I wanted to talk about is bring this to you guys and have a little discussion. And the discussion really is around this product in NIL.
This product has this I think this is the fifth season. Twenty twenty one, twenty twenty two was the first season of Bowman University. And I'll read a little excerpt from the debut set as it was promoted.
It said, debuted in 2122 season, Bowman University Football is giving youth centric brand a fresh start on the gridiron with recent developments surrounding NIL and collegiate athletes.
Topps is now able to create cards of players potentially years before their professional debuts. Collectors will find a lot of familiar Bowman elements in the product. Among them are autographs.
A pair of Bowman Chrome U autographs are featured in every hobby box. So I just wanna, like, bring this to the table, and I'm never gonna say that, like, Bowman First will replace rookie cards, but they're the first.
They're the first appearance of players. And I look at baseball, and I think about how baseball card collecting operates where there's this big debate on, like, yeah, that card might be a rookie card, but we don't care about that.
What we care about is the Bowman first. And so, like, Bowman the Bowman draft picks and prospects is huge.
There's constantly people chasing it. An element of that is right there typically in their MLB jerseys in that. And there's some difference, right here. You've got college, versus pro.
But I wanted to, like, bring this up with you guys, and try to get your perspective of, do you think there's any substance there in terms of, like, you can buy these cards for, you know, a box for a $160 right now.
Yeah. They're not their rookie cards, but there's a lot of fans of college sports and things in this era. Although, I don't think we have realized them from a collecting perspective in this NIL era.
Things look and feel a lot different, and a lot of that is centered around, like, promotional players. So, like, I'm wondering, does that map to, at some level, like, some long term collectability with the first in this product?
I'll just, like, throw that out there and try to get a reaction from either one of you. Like, what are your thoughts when thinking about that? I don't think it'll ever replace, like, a pro rookie card.
If you're a fan of college sports the way that some people are like, if I were a diehard Ohio State Buckeyes fan, like, I know a lot of my friends are, like, they care about the Buckeyes more than an NFL team, this would be the product for me if I was like that.
But me personally, I'd like, I'm never gonna, I think, chase one of, like, these firsts over a pro like, I don't care about Caleb Williams' USC cards at all.
But if I was a USC fan, I might because it's like, oh, you want a Heisman. Like, let's collect them. But I don't know. That's just my take on it.
Any thoughts, Josh? Yeah. I traditionally don't collect college, cards as well, but I am a season ticket holder for Arizona State. I'm an alumni, and they've had a resurgence in the last couple of years with, coach Dillingham.
So our our program is actually fairly exciting. We almost beat Texas last year. And and then I clicked the the link you posted in this spread, and I saw Sam Levitt is on the cover.
Let's go. So I might, have to buy the Sam Levitt super fracture non auto. I would totally buy the Scatter Boo as well, by the way. If I saw I've seen the Scatter Boo. What's that pink one?
You know? I I'm not gonna buy that. I've seen that one of one. No chance in line with it. Time I try to say pop, I always butcher it. I'm not even gonna No chance. I would buy this I would buy the Superfractor, though.
And they're and Jordan Tyson's in it. He's gonna be, like, a top 10 pick this year at receiver. He's he's probably the top receiver pick. So I'd be interested in that one as well. Yeah.
I think I think for the in the time being, it's just, like, if you have an allegiance with the team, like, you can getting into these cards, it is, like, a percentage of what I'm used to paying for, like, equivalent players in, like, Colts in Prism.
So I think part of that makes it fun. One more trivia question, and don't pull up your card ladders, but there is there hasn't been a ton.
I just did a search across, like, all Bowman, and there's been let's see here. 1,570 total sales across all Bowman University sports that are a thousand dollars or above, which seems pretty low.
What what what do you think the most expensive in this five year stretch, football card from this product has been and guesses on maybe how much it went for?
It's gotta be Arch. Right? Arch hasn't been in it. Oh, he hasn't. But that that's another dynamic. Some players aren't because they got deals with Panini. That's where Oh.
Oh. Oh. Oh. I have no idea. It's gotta be Caleb then. Right? It's actually let me pull it up for you here. Oh, shoot. I did I mess this up? I had it. It's it's it's the it's the Travis Hunter refractor auto, and it sold for $7,500.
So that to me, like, as someone who buys and collects this stuff, to know that, like, the highest selling card in this product in its history so far is only $7,500.
Stuff like that makes me really excited and just makes me wanna collect it more.
So I know there'll be a lot of people out there buying the brakes, ripping this stuff, but we don't talk too much about collegiate cards and just felt like a good opportunity to do it this week.
So shout out Haystack for sponsoring, new releases. Alright. It's time. Everyone's in their seat. The phones are out. The dynamic kickoff. You guys ready? Okay. Actually, I do wanna say the questions this week, little weak.
We've had stronger crops before, so this is a direct, calling out and a challenge to the Football Card Podcast loyal listeners. Step it up. You know? We're trying to have you make our run of show and make it easy for us.
When you provide weak questions, it makes it harder for us. So, yeah, love you all, but just just saying, you know, step it up. I see what the the crossover gets. The crossover questions, they get the cream of the crop.
But Football Car Podcast, I think, might have gotten the scraps this week. Are you throwing a flag? There's no flag. This is the predynamic kickoff, like, huddle to get everyone hyped up, to go out there and crack some skulls.
So, like, we can even take bad questions and return them for a touchdown. Like, we are capable, but, the kickoff itself is from the the loyal listeners.
So first question from m n sports cards 12. How do you feel about collecting duplicates of a card? When would and when wouldn't you? Josh, you wanna kick us off?
Yeah. I'll start. I said it's a no for me. I mean, mostly because I collect one of ones for football, so it's impossible to have dupes. But I prefer the utopian world where, like, all the collectors have the cards they're looking for.
And if you have dupes, it's just one less potential collector to own that card, especially, like, the gold prisms and the stuff out of five. You know? It makes it tough.
But I can see the side for, like, trade bait and things like that. I am not a big dupes guy. However, I found myself in my Andrew Luck, collecting journey, especially with the gold prisms, that I was so adamant on completing that run.
And I was so invested in into it that, one when, a luck prism gold popped up either in my DMs or on eBay, during that time and I already had it, I never said no to it because it was like, the cost of it was so low compared to how much I valued it, and what I was going through.
But the benefit of that is, I I don't have any more luck gold prism dupes. And what has been fun about those is I know they they are all in collections where they should be of Colts collectors and fans.
And I either sold them directly or use them as trade bait. So I don't seek out dupes, but in special scenarios, sometimes they are cards that I can use in place in the right collections.
And then maybe also get something in return from those collections that I wouldn't have been able to without the dupe.
Yeah. Similar. It's not a frequent thing for me, but if something pops up at the right price, I'm like, oh, I'll grab this. Specifically, 2,002 finest refractors. Like, I just bought a Fred Taylor for $7. I'm like, yes.
I'll I probably have two of those already, but can't pass up a deal. And then overall, I was thinking I do love when someone has, like, eight out of the 10 gold prisms of a player from, like, the same year, and they're going for all 10.
That's where but that that gets to the next level beyond dupes and and trips and quads even.
That gets to a whole whole different level that I think is also a cool lane of collecting. Like, if you got all 10 gold prisms of a player from the same year, that's pretty sick.
I wanna shout out, just every time I see this, he adds another one and it blows my mind. But listener of the pod and also a fan of college sports, and he's actually a fan of a team who, fired their coach, this week.
We won't talk about him, but you'll probably be able to tell by his handle. Shout out Brooks, LSU Tiger collector 65. This guy has six Patrick Peterson $20.
12 gold price, which is just and on top of that, he's got four rookie Tyrone Matthew gold prisms and the black finite. So my man Brooks has no problems with multiples, and it's just sick to see that.
I know it's like some people are, like, oh, he's hoarding this and that, but, like, to see six twenty twelve gold Patrick Peterson prisms in one collection is just it's that's just insanity.
That's what I'm saying. Once you get beyond dupes, it becomes, like, more admirable.
Like, sometimes dupes, it's like, yeah. Why are you why do you have two of those? Let one of those go so another collector can get it. But once you have six, it's like, okay. Now I'm I want you to get to 10. Yes.
Alright. Next up, should defensive players get more love from CDG sports cards? I said, yes. Brevity, man. You're into it. This, that's not not a bad straight into the point. I my thing I love defensive players. I love collecting them.
I said always, but my my remark is it feels like this has been a break year breakthrough year for the defensive player in terms of value and collectability. I just think about that Clay Matthews black finite sale.
It's like Clay Matthews isn't going to be a hall of famer. However, that there for that to drive up to the price it did, it shows, like, there are a lot of collectors who covet Clay Matthews cards or might be Packers collectors.
And then I know that there's a couple Aaron Donald cards that sold this year that were 5 figures.
So like that a few years ago, like, that stuff just didn't happen at all. And people a lot of people outside of, like, hardcore collectors just, like, disregarded, defensive players.
So it feels like there's more attention and collectors are feeling more comfortable spending big money on the other side of the ball.
Yes. I obviously agree. I have Aaron Donald, black finite rookie, and I also have Patrick Peterson, 2017 black finite. I'd love to get more.
The one that I really struggled to get is TJ Watt. Like the Steelers collectors just keep that stuff secret. I I haven't even seen, like, a gold prism rookie sell, and I don't even know where any of them are, let alone the black finite.
But in 2017, the great Dick Butkus had a sale for 37,000. So that's a pretty big Wow. Defensive player sale from pre pre pandemic.
I don't even know what that card would sell for today. It's a pop nine. What card is it? It's the 1966 Philadelphia. I don't know what that is, but it's a pop nine, and the PSA 10 is a pop one, which has never sold, obviously.
That's awesome. It's from the same set. Gail Sayers, rookie year too. They're rookies in the same class, if you can picture that one. Yeah. TJ Watts stuff, I've noticed that too. There was some gold prism.
Yeah. I guess this was almost a a year ago. Last September, his twenty eighteen gold prism, so not even a rookie. $1,100 raw on eBay. Just Wow. Steelers fans. I mean, we've seen the Antonio Brown sales are crazy.
Levian stuff has gotten harder to get. Yeah. I don't know. They're they're crazy out there. Next question. Is there one single card that you would trade your entire collection for? This is from Van Isle cards.
I I don't think so. I think for me, if it enters that category and the first card that I, like, thought about was the twenty twelve Andrew Luck Black Finite Prism, which is probably, like, my number one card on my list.
I would have a hard time getting rid of everything because part of the reason why that card is number one on my list is because it, like, connects back to everything else I've been doing.
So I'd I'd have to, like, give up everything that I'm already working on to get a card, and it would feel like I have to start over again.
I know a lot of people would make this decision and give up everything for one card, but I'm not sure that's me. Josh? No chance. I have, like, my favorite card of a lot of my favorite players.
So it it's just like, I'd have to give up so many cards of players I love just to get one player's best card. You know? No way. See now I took it as I'm trading it for that dual logo man that's in the Wondershine index for 13 mil.
I'm selling that. I'm buying it for 13 mil, pal. Actually, I'm according to the Wondershine's index and their own current valuation of This is a this is a car ladder sponsored podcast.
It's up to 16,000,000 in the current value. Just take the take the PSA 10 mantle. That price sell for more. I mean I was that was gonna be my question, though. If this Duo logo man hit auction, it sells for under 10, I think.
Yeah. Yeah. Totally. But I just thought it was funny that they have on the site, the current valuation is 16,380,000, two months after they purchased it, it's gone up almost 4,000,000 in value according to the Wondershine index.
So, I know this is a football card podcast, but did you guys ever see your top brought up the mantle.
Did you ever see when the PSA 10 was, like, featured at, like, the all star game and they, like, they, like, rolled it in with, like, armory trucks and everything?
I was just like, that's incredible. There's just, like, security and trucks and all this detail just for a sports card.
That's something special. But still, even if it's not that card going for the mantle or something, flipping it for, like, 10 mil, you could get your cards back.
You could get them all back and then be set. Dude, that mantle is, like, 30,000,000. That's crazy. Yeah. Like, kinda easily. Alright. Next question. Brett sent me this NFL realignment map.
Like, when the Panthers came into the league, they were talking about, hypothetical division alignments. One of them included the Colts possibly being in the NFC Central, which I thought was amusing to think about.
The Colts' dome team, they couldn't handle, you know, playing in Green Bay in Chicago. And so but it just got me thinking of what are some of the biggest what ifs in NFL history?
I can start mine was Russell Wilson's pick at the goal line in the Super Bowl. You go from Seahawks potentially winning their second Super Bowl in a row, beating Brady.
Brady would still be at three rings. Like, he hadn't won in, like, ten years to that point. Just a major sliding door moment when, Russ threw that pick instead of handing the ball to Marshawn. Just a crazy, crazy moment.
But, yeah, what any thoughts on on the map or other what if moments? Brett's muted, so I'll jump in. I am a big fan of the structure of the NFL. It is, like, so perfect with the 32, the four in each division. They play each other twice.
They ruined it by adding the seventeenth game because it was like Mhmm. We had we had square roots across the board. It was beautiful, but it's still very good. I would never touch any of the never move any of those teams, please.
I have two, though. They're both personal. I didn't I didn't think big picture like you. Your example is better, John. I have two. What if Todd Gurley had two knees? That'd be great. You know?
He was, like, on his way to be in one of the goats. And then this one is, like, very specific. But in the two thousand eight Super Bowl, Cardinals were going in to take the lead with, like, twenty seconds left in the first half.
They're in, like, the two yard line, and Kurt throws an interception. James Harrison, like, stumbles his way down the field, and he's just, like, breaking tackles.
And Larry Fitzgerald is chasing him down the sidelines, and he bumps into on trail roll on the sidelines and then tackles him, like, at the goal line.
So if he hadn't bumped into roll, I think he would have made the tackle at the two, clock would have ran out. We would have won that game.
Oh, bad. We're bringing up some Super Bowl wounds in this one. That was, yeah, the biggest swing ever, though. This I want this map. We're sharing it for the Patreon. It's was released when the Panthers were announced.
And you want football in the style, they're like, we'll try to get this posted on Instagram so you can check it out. I have two. The one I can't one, I don't think gets talked about enough, but should.
And that's why I'm using my space to talk about it. But and I'll I remember this vividly when the Dolphins decided to go with Dante Culpepper instead of Drew Brees.
And the the it was like, Culpepper was had the year Manning threw for 49 touchdowns. Culpepper threw had a ridiculous season.
He had a ton. But, like, Culpepper was just, like, literally airing it out to Randy Moss every play. And so the Dolphins were, I think, scared of the breeze injury, and they decided to go with Culpeper.
And the the you don't talk about forgettable. Dante Culpeper on the Dolphins was about as forgettable as it gets. It was just not a good run.
And then Drew Brees obviously goes on to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. And, again, you we've all shared Super Bowl wounds. We talked about the o six and the the kickoff, which the Bears lost.
We just talked about the, the the Cardinals losing to the Steelers. And in 2009, the Colts lost to the Saints. And if this the Saints, I the Saints would never have been in that game without Drew Brees in all likelihood.
But I wanna thank which I haven't done this publicly, but I wanna thank the the Miami Dolphins for their stupidity there, because, caused the suit the Colts to lose the Super Bowl.
So there's that. And then I just also, like, Andrew Luck, just in general. It's like, what he was doing with everything and how he was playing.
It's fun though, because I just I have this strong connection to him, obviously, by what I collect. But it's it's fun to see, like, people now starting to remember and share clips. Like, he was a really special player. And I don't know.
If he was still, like, playing now, it's really hard for me to think that, like, he wouldn't have won at least one Super Bowl. So that's the one that's gonna stick with me forever. What if Nick Harper's wife hadn't stabbed him?
Oh, yeah. The old Nick Harper chasing Ben Roethlisberger. Gosh. Or right him Yeah. Running for the touchdown. Roethlisberger tackling him after the fumble. That is fumbling at the one yard line.
That's It's this is still the most painful even that game over the Super Bowl loss is probably more painful just based on the o five Colts team, which was the the Colts team before the Super Bowl, the year before.
It's the Super Bowl team, but with Edron James was the greatest Colts team of all time, and they lost to these dealers because of, Nick Harper getting stabbed in the leg by a domestic dispute and didn't have the full strength to run that son of a bitch back.
And then, also, god, we talk about them too much on here, but Mike Vanderjag, that piece of shit missing the field goal, monk liquored up kicker.
Gotcha. Let's let's move on. I'm getting fired up. Wait. One more note, though. Dante Culpepper was so sick.
Minnesota, 2,004, 4,717 passing yards, 39 touchdowns. Yeah. Yes. Monster season. Manning threw for 10 Manning threw for 10 more than that that same year, but that that year always gets overshadowed for Culpepper.
Like, any other year, that would be, like, the greatest quarterback here, but Manning was just so prolific that year.
But, yeah, it was insane. I have a zag on the breeze dolphins. I love a zag. I think he would have been not even close to as good as he was, that he turned out to be with the Saints. Dome of the Saints.
Mhmm. Sean Payton, obviously, is his, as his, coach. And the Dolphins are always a mess. Like, there's a reason their quarterbacks always suck. Yep. I think that's fair. Yeah. That that was the perfect situation for Drew Brees for sure.
Next up, final question. This was from Drake's PC. What is an example of a card that didn't interest you much until it became valuable? Similar similarly, what is a card that you were interested in before it became valuable?
I said, I don't know if I've ever, like, bought anything just because it's valuable, but the only thing that I could really think of was, like, 2002 or 2010, 2011 Finest Mosaic refractors.
Like, I remember those being a thing, and I was, like, not into them. I was just very stuck in early two thousands, but then I kept seeing them go up in number.
So it just made me watch them more. I don't necessarily collect them, but I guess that was my only example of seeing something gaining in value that was made me go, It's like, must be something there.
But it's never really influenced like, I never am like, oh, that's expensive.
I should go buy it. I just don't really have the funds to operate that way. But, what do you guys think? Yeah. I usually I don't have a good example. I usually run-in the other direction when stuff is getting too heated up.
But my example on the other side was 2012 Prizm, which wasn't necessarily, like, affordable or cheap. But when I started collecting the Colts team set, the cards were, you know, a percentage of what they are now across the board.
And I'm really glad I did then because quite frankly, based on the current prices and the way things shake out, I'm not sure I would have been able to complete that team set if I just started now.
So I think I don't know. My feedback is, like, even if if you really believe in something and stuff seems a little pricey, but you really love it.
Like, sometimes you just go just go do it because, like, if it works out the way you think, like, those that stuff's just gonna get even more expensive.
So that's my example. What about you, Josh? We've fielded this exact question on the crossover, so I'll save us some time and say, go watch the last episode of crossover. Drake, get more creative, bud. Reusing questions?
Come on. Copy paste questions. See, that's what I'm saying. These questions this week. I mean Drake's the man. Yeah. Love you, Drake. Drake keeps the lights on over here and at the crossover with his consistent questions.
Yes. He does. And Van Isle cards. I gotta shout out Van Isle cards. Yes. They have been a consistent contributor on questions weekly. I see you plus 10 points for the consistency.
Moving into collecting updates, What are the current collecting projects that you're focusing resources on? I had a work trip last week. I was in Las Vegas from Thursday to Monday. Four nights in Vegas, Too long in Vegas.
No one should ever have to be there for four nights. But I was on good behavior. I didn't gamble the first couple nights. Didn't really drink the first couple nights. But Friday night, I went out with some friends.
We had dinner and stuff and saw a card that popped up on eBay, threw an offer, not totally under the influence, but Vegas had influenced me. You know, there's dollar signs everywhere. I'm like, oh, yeah.
That's it's a cool card. I can get it. Throw in the offer Friday night. Honestly, forgot about it until Sunday morning. I opened up eBay, and I just was looking through notifications, and it's like, update on your order.
And I was like, what? And I'd they had accepted my offer. So, it was the twenty twenty four Panini Contenders, Bijan Robinson Super Bowl ticket one zero one. $500.
Pretty sick card. Could I have got it cheaper? Maybe. I don't know. A Saquon had sold for 900, so I was like, Bijon 500? Like, why not? And then I looked through the history more and, like, a Jonathan Taylor sold for, like, $80 earlier.
So who knows? Might have got got a little bit there. But, again, I don't care. It's a cool Bijon one zero one that I'm just gonna stash away. Be does because that happened in Vegas, does that card have to, like, stay in Vegas?
I think so, actually. I wonder if I can, you know, challenge contest it on eBay and say, like, instead of sorry my son bought this, say, sorry I was in Las Vegas.
But can you refund it? Can can I what is your, you've been on this Bijon kick, and what's your what's your plan?
Like, are you just, like, accumulating, like, the coolest Bijon cards you can find? Do you have, like, a a goal with your Bijon collecting? I mean, it's kind of a way to just get new cards from sets that I don't already collect.
Like, Bears Prism is, like, a big focus and other, like, Bears stuff, but, like, I'm never really buying contender stuff, but I have, like, a Bijan auto that's different.
I don't know. It's just a way to, like, kinda follow new sets that have been coming out.
And, yeah, like, I haven't really I don't know. It's fun. It's just like a a fun current active player to to buy. And, like, when this card comes, like, maybe I get it, and I'm like, oh, this is actually awesome.
Like, the foil is really shiny. It does all the things. This is one that I'm gonna keep, or I get it, and it just reminds me of spending $500 in Las Vegas.
And I'm like, I could put this somewhere else. So, like, I don't know. It's just, I don't know. There's no clear definitive goal with him. It's more of if cool car shows up, I buy, and that's it.
It's a good plan of attack. I will mention one card. I will say that I have oddly enough this week, the last couple nights, I have been, like, trying not to fall asleep and bid on cards for auction.
And it's, like, the type of, like, mega bidding on cards that I know no one's going to even pay close because mostly they're associated to my cold gold prism or gold vinyl collections that pops up.
So I had a few of those, and maybe I'll mention them next week.
But also, like, I'll shout out even though they don't directly sponsor this podcast, they are a big partner of stacking slabs. I gotta just shout out a feature on eBay that I noticed for people like me, this has helpful.
Is that when eBay will now on the app, like, if you're if you're in if you've, like, placed a bid in the lock screen, eBay, like, when you lock your phone and you have it down, like, it is showing you the date it is showing you that auction countdown as your phone is locked.
And that for I am I fall asleep in the evenings. I've got two kids and another on the way. Like, I can't tell you how many times I've been pissed off to wake up, and, like, the anxiety of, like, missing an auction.
So that was a, that's a cool update in a feature, so shout out there. But the card I wanna talk about is, I got a black finite, another one to the pile. It's the twenty twenty four Taekwon Lewis black finite one of one.
Now, Taekwon Lewis, you might not even know who Taekwon Lewis is, but, like, this is why I love Prism in a way. Taekwon Lewis is a a rotational, defensive lineman for the Colts.
He went to Ohio State. He's been around since 2016. He's just like, he will make, like, he will make a play. Like, if he's playing, he'll make, like, a play game. And it's just like, man, Taekwon Lewis, like, glad we have him.
He's like one of those guys. He's like, not super prolific, doesn't play every snap, but, like, he just makes plays. But, like, this thing that there's, like, so many of these nuances, and I get nerdy on the checklist and stuff.
So he had a 2016 was his rookie. He had a Prism card. And then in 2024, just out of nowhere, they just decided to put Taekwon Lewis in the checklist.
And they put Taekwon Lewis at the checklist, and DeForest Buckner is not in the twenty twenty four checklist. So it's like stuff like that. It's like, who's making these decisions?
But that doesn't prevent me from buying the card. And I don't know. I think I spent $500. You know, like, $500 on a Ticwon Lewis card? That's probably the all time sale for Ticwon Lewis cards, but I needed it.
I wanted it, and it's in my collection. And then I also, like, realized after I bought this, out of 2024 Prism, I have the the black finite, the gold, and the gold vinyl of three players now.
Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman, and now Taekwon Lewis. So I can't wait to get all of those cards together and just do the symmetry and the consistency and the cohesiveness behind all of those, and just get it in one photo.
And that's like that kind of stuff is, like, why I'm going to be a maniac and spend more than anyone else on a guy like Taekwon Lewis, because he fits in my collection.
And I can say, you know, I did this. So that was a big dub for me. This week, it was a PSA eight. You know, it's gonna do the old authentication program, and I'll probably get it after Christmas.
But, it's okay. I'm excited to get that one in my collection. Sick card. I was watching that. I figured it might be one that you were going for. Cool card. And it's all yeah. You're right.
It's all about the end picture. Like, the point of a lot of this is, like, oh, so I can group it all together and eventually I have this this collection that, like, they all link together somehow. And, This needs to make sense.
Mhmm. Josh, any any big scoops lately? Yes. Let me start by saying, though, I'm very happy to hear that the stewards of the official Fantasy Football card or the Football Card podcast are from two collectors.
Because this show could have been taken up by investors and flippers, and it's just great to hear this perspective. And you guys are, like, after your projects and you're sharing, it's just I love it so much.
It's, I'm very happy to hear the success you guys have had with the show and just, like, doing it from the collecting perspective, I think is so key.
So my for people in your audience that don't know, I'm collecting one of ones, of all of my favorite football players that are not quarterbacks. So it's mostly fantasy football, receiver, running backs, also some defensive players.
This last week, I picked up the twenty twelve Topps Chrome Superfractor, Julio Jones. Mhmm. And I think, like, all posted the sale, like, oh, most spent ever on Julio. And people are like, who's this idiot? It was me.
I did purchase another one a couple days ago. I'm not ready to share it yet. Brett knows what it is. Not ready for that one yet. And then I also wanted to jump in on the Bijan discussion about just, I don't want to call it random.
It seems like you, you may have said it's random, but like, I love the, contenders Super Bowl ticket cards. Big fan of those. I have, like, four girlies and two Antonio Browns. I think they're wildly underpriced.
Contenders is like a super old established football brand, and it's just like, when you think of football cards, you almost automatically think of the Brady contenders rookie, the Manning contenders rookie.
I don't understand why that lineage hasn't translated forward, I guess, because it's not a kaboom, but whatever. I think those cards are awesome.
So big fan of those. And I think it's important to, like, go out and expand out into other brands for specific players that you really have an affinity for, like Bijan. I do the same for Antonio Brown and Todd Gurley.
I'll call basically by, like, any one on ones of those guys. I don't do it for everybody because that would be insane, and I would have no money, but it's fun to pick it for a couple of guys.
So I do have this pickup as well on that same topic. This is the 2014 TOPS chrome thousand yard club insert super factor Antonio Brown.
So it's, like, outside of what I normally do, it's an insert, but it's still a one on one. It's a super factor. It's Antonio Brown. So that's kind of what I was thinking relative to the Bichon discussion.
I love it. Yeah. The the contender stuff, I'm not a massive autograph guy, but if I'm if I ever want a autograph of a football player, I'm going to contenders. Those they have the it's the best autograph to me.
It's like the first rookie autographs come out of Contenders. So, I think Contenders has been solid almost every year, but I think it's like feel like it's like the Justin Fields rookie year that contenders product is just not good.
I don't remember. It's just the design just being puked. Like Zach Wills.
I remember seeing, like, Zach Wilson rookie tickets. I was like, oh, this card is trash. But outside of that, like, it's a pretty consistent brand. Yeah. That I mean, these thank you for validating my purchase because I was like, yeah.
Super contenders, legacy brand, one of one, Super Bowl ticket. The one of ones on the front of the card. He's making, like, a sick juke move. I was like, this is cool.
Like, what? Like, let me buy this. But you guys you guys quietly have this, like, JT versus Bijan run this year. Like, who's gonna be the best running back? And I'll bring it up because you guys are, like, dancing around it.
But Bijan, I think, is a is on pace to win in scrimmage yards. JT is obviously way ahead of pace on touchdowns and rushing yards. I we're gonna see we're gonna see him head to head in Berlin in a couple weeks.
Or wake up early with some eggs, and you get to see probably the best running back head to head matchup all week happening in Berlin, Germany. Let's go. Bijan has had a couple stinkers though that have Yeah.
Knocked his in a row, that have knocked his pace set. J JT is number one running back in the NFL. Like, can't argue it. And just the way the offense is built around him, like, the Falcons are still just kind of a I don't know.
The Falcons aren't a well oiled machine the way But now if Bijan was on the Colts, actually, I believe If I was on the Colts right now, are you seeing the holes that are happening?
You know? Daniel Jones is, like, quietly having an MVP season. I don't know why he's not in discussion.
He's having a better season than Drake May and some of these other guys, in my opinion. He should be up there. He's slightly behind JT in odds, but this is when What are his odds at now? I I haven't looked it's I can't remember.
You can go check them out real quick. But as I'm sharing this but, like, when I saw, like, the odds recently and I saw, like, JT or Jones was right behind JT, I was just like, this is when you know you're having a good year.
When you got tenth. He's tenth. And what's John's deal right now? Sixth. He's way behind. He's behind Daniel Jones is behind Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hertz, Jared Goff, Matt Stafford.
Get out of here. Yes. Regardless, having two guys in the top 10 MVP discussion is, like, a pretty good indicator that you're having a pretty good year.
So I'm I'm gonna take it. I'll have to check tape, but I think at one point, I said Daniel Jones. I looked up his odds on the Footballcard pod when he was, like, plus 6,500.
And I was like, that's looking good. It was, like, week one or week two. Of course, I didn't bet on it. That would that would mean I'd make a smart, financial decision on that front, which I never do.
So but he's looking good. I'll since we're talking about this, maybe as we segue into NFL check-in, I'll just talk my team, pass it to you, and we can get through it.
But the one thing that I wanted to comment on was this week, obviously, in being at the game, it was a great I I went with my wife. She comes to about one of these games with me a week or a year, so it was a fun game.
But the thing that stuck out to me in this game, obviously, Jonathan Taylor, and just that that that the 80 yard run, like, I I literally felt like my my whole body was gonna explode.
Like, watching that unfold, I was just I was like because he was already doing his thing, and it was like, alright.
Let's just do this now. And so the moment, like, it was like pure pandemonium and hysteria. Like, when you can't hear anything that's just so loud, and it's like, 70,000 people just screaming their heads off.
And then, dude, I just, like, heard in the it was like I heard it in the distance. You just start hearing the MVP. And then collectively, the whole stadium starts chanting MVP. And, like, that moment, I was like, damn.
Like, I don't it it how long I was, like, asking myself. I was, like, how long has it been since I've been a fan being in a stadium where everyone's just chanting MVP for a player? And it's, like, it's, like, legitimate.
I know, like, there's been a lot of discussion this week on, like, is Taylor really, like, can it be a running back this and that? But that to me, it was like, that's the up that's all I wanna talk about this week.
It's like, there are few things better than when your team is absolutely kicking the living shit out of a divisional opponent at home, beating them in all phases.
And then on top of it, you're watching this guy just play out of his mind and the whole stadium chanting MVP.
And I felt like after that, I got on, like, Twitter and Instagram and all the talking heads, and then, like, everyone was talking about, like, Taylor for MVP.
And I was like, did we did we do that as like, did we help do that as fans? So that was a cool moment for me for this week.
Yeah. That was awesome. As a I'm in three fantasy leagues. I own Jonathan Taylor in two. So we are riding high on JT this year. Well, so I don't do the I'm not I told you I don't I don't play fantasy.
I'm I'm on a hiatus. Like, what what how what kinda, like, point what's, like, the normal point total for JT per game this year? Like, what's it looking like? Oh, he's breaking 30 all the time.
30? Yeah. He's Every week. Easily in the twenties. I think he had maybe one sub 20 game. Yeah. We We've looked up the I'll look up the rankings for fantasy real quick. Let you So his week by week scores, I I'll kinda round up.
Thirteen, thirty, 33, fifteen, thirty two, 24, 34, 37. Just a stud. The the final thing I wanna say and then we can move over to you guys is I put this on my Instagram, but just I'll say it any time I can.
This year, the players vote top 100 players in the NFL, and Jonathan Taylor was was not on that list this year.
Really? Top 100 players. Not not not in it. Yeah. Somebody keep saying it because yeah. It's it's it's egregious, everybody. When I saw that, I was like, it's any he had 1,400 yards and 10 touchdowns last year.
It's like, what are we doing? But, anyways, enough about Taylor. I could talk about because this could be the Jonathan Taylor podcast. I've got I've got some more Jonathan Taylor notes in a minute.
I'll talk bears real quick. So like I said, I was in Las Vegas. The bears are now o and three when I'm not at my home, on the season. They are four and o when I'm watching the game at my house.
So them losing is totally on me. Kinda simple as that. But, just kinda thinking how it's Groundhog Day a little bit where, like I mentioned earlier, I have the the file cabinet over here of excuses and cope that I'm very familiar with.
Like, when you have a rookie quarterback who has an up and down rookie year and the team stinks, that's fine because they're a rookie.
They're figuring it out, and you can always use the Manning stat, which is Manning through 28 picks his rookie year. So any bad rookie year, you can always throw that out there.
Then when they struggle in year two, you can now use the Josh Allen stat, which is like, oh, look at Josh Allen's first two years. He couldn't figure it out until year three. That's where we're at currently with Caleb Williams.
I'm seeing all sorts of side by sides of Josh Allen's first two years, Caleb's first two years, or Goff's first year under Ben Johnson. That said, Caleb wasn't terrible. Like, he threw a really bad pick, but I'm not dooming and gloomy.
I just can't when you see Daniel Jones doing what he's doing and Baker and Darnold all having that success later in their career, it's hard to be like, oh, Caleb's done after 22 games.
Like, he can't figure it out. Like, I do think he has the tools to figure things out. They just need to score touchdowns in the red zone and stop getting 10 penalties a game.
So it sucks. Losing sucks. And, but if before the season, I had looked at the schedule, and if he told me they would be four and three right now with a winnable game against the Bengals, I'd be pretty happy.
I didn't think they were gonna beat the Ravens before the season. I thought Lamar would play though. But, yeah, getting beat by Tyler Huntley is pretty brutal.
So I'm kinda happy I I didn't have to watch the game. But I did watch I watched tape afterwards. And, yeah, Caleb, he's throwing darts during the game, and then he makes dumb decisions. He's just I don't know.
He's young. It'll be fine. That's kind of my thought. Just I'm at home this Sunday, four and o at home, win at home. Oh, and one final thing. My daughter, who's over two now, is talking, saying phrases all the time.
She has a great go bears, down. And at night, when I'm, like, leaving her room or one of us is leaving the room so someone else can read her books, she always is just throwing out random phrases.
Like, she'll be like, good night, mommy. Have a good weekend, and it'll be a Tuesday or something.
And yesterday, she threw out go bears out of nowhere. I was like, let's go. She's thinking about it. So, yeah, we're back home. Beat the Bengals, and you'll be five and three, and I'll be happy.
It'll feel totally different. That's my best. I have one comment and then a question for you about Caleb Williams. I would say, like, look out for that Josh Allen comparison year two.
There's a lot of that with Anthony Richardson, and I don't think that bode well for him. So just, maybe, like, if you see somebody putting that out that out there, just be, like, tone it down a little bit.
Okay. Caleb Williams is better than Anthony Richardson. A lot of people are better than Anthony Richardson. Yeah. I I hear that. But, like, he still threw for Caleb threw for, like, two eighty.
He still looked I don't know. This is my question. I I and I I'm not watching Caleb Williams like you, but my question is based on what I have seen and then also, like, the people that I actually think no ball and I follow.
The is the what I gather from, like, the commentary is it feels like there's, like, Ben Johnson wants Caleb Williams to play within the confines and context of the system offensive system that he's building.
But Caleb, like, will play within that system, but then veers outside of it.
And it's like when he veers outside of it, whether that's, like, doing the off platform stuff that Caleb Williams has done and made him successful, that's when things go south.
I have not watched at the level you have, but I wanna is is there any validity to that, or is that completely off base?
I think so. I think the, like, the go to sound bite about Caleb Williams is, like, oh, he always tries to do the superhero stuff.
He needs to just settle down. It's like he doesn't do that as much as he it's painted. There are definitely moments during the game where, like, things break down.
He tries to scramble out of the pocket and, like, do some crazy throw on the run. But that's kinda just, like, part of his game, but it's not every single play.
Like, there were times watching Justin Fields where I was, like, every single play this guy is holding the ball too long. He's getting killed. Caleb is still making good plays, but the bigger issue with him is just general accuracy.
He's, like, missing some what you would hope would be easier throws. And then a lot of it might be, like, again, when you watch these tape breakdowns, it's like the Ben Johnson offense is kinda complicated.
It's a lot of timing stuff, and it's, like, wasn't quite on the same page with Rome there or DJ there.
And it's, like, I don't know. To me, part of it is growing pains. I'm not at all on the, like, jump ship from Caleb yet. It's just still so early.
And I, like, I know what's out there. Like, we get rid of Caleb and then you get another rookie, and then it's running the playbook back where I have to go through a shitty rookie season. And then I'm growing pains in season two.
It's like, let's just stick with this guy and, like, continue to build and see what happens. And, like, Jaden Daniels is hurt and not even playing, and no one's like, oh, Jaden's a bust or anything like that.
Penix is playing worse than Caleb. Like, I don't know. Caleb, I feel like, has a target on his back just because of his personality and how big of a star he was at USC and all the things, but, I don't know.
I'm just like, he's he's doing fine for a second year quarterback, I think. He's they're four and three. He'll be fine. So some NFL takes to go off of JT.
Let let's hear I want Josh. I wanna hear what you think about the cardinals. Be quick. Cardinals are trash. I'm done with Kyler Murray. I've been done with him for, like, two years. He's too small, terrible in the clutch.
He can't see he literally cannot receive receivers running wide open across the field. He's terrible. He takes horrible sex. He's fried. But this is my one time to give Trey McBride some love. Nobody talks about Trey McBride.
He's the best head in the NFL. I don't wanna hear this, Brock Bowers, Tyler Warren stuff. Trey McBride leads the NFL in fantasy points per game for tight ends. Trey McBride is the best head in the league.
He's doing well with Kyler Murray throwing him the football. So that's how you know he's good. Cardinals are trash. Yeah. No argument there. 1,100 yards last year, and he's balling again this year.
And finally, he scored touchdowns. Didn't he, like, not score a touchdown? He had one, like, at the very end because they were, like, trying to get him one. But this year, he already has four.
Hell, yeah. On my JT note, I was saying Jonathan Taylor is now officially on the Danie and Tomlinson watch, which is fun to see. And in that, Priest Holmes is starting to get a lot of mentions, which I'm loving.
Priest Holmes is finally people are their graphics on, ESPN, I'm seeing on Twitter all the time. It's like Taylor's on pace to do this or he's the first person since Priest Holmes to do this. So I'm loving that.
Touchdowns. Did you see that? The Kelsey, like, tied him for Chiefs touchdown, so he kept being brought up. Yeah. So I had that, they both scored Travis Kelce scored his eighty third touchdown, tying Priest Holmes 83 total touchdowns.
Travis Kelce did it in let me make sure I get this right. I thought when I saw that he was tug I thought that he was going to tie it. Like, I I thought that the player was Tony Gonzalez on the other side, but it was Priest Holmes.
That's something. Travis Kelce has played 183 games, and he scored his eighty third touchdown. Priest Holmes scored 83 touchdowns in 65 games. Oh my gosh. Travis Kelce had an extra 118 games to tie the record.
That's insane. That's insane. And so I'm very familiar with Priest Holmes game log and stats and career, but one nugget that because people are always like, oh, he had, like, a good season or two.
And it's like he had three straight first team all pros in 2001, 2002, 2003, and set all the, like, touchdown records in o two and o three.
But his o four season so coming off those three straight unreal seasons, he only played eight games.
Jonathan Taylor has only played eight games this season. Jonathan Taylor, in his eight games this season, has what is it? 1,000, where'd it go? I have too many pro football reference tabs open from all this. One one thousand fifty six.
1,056, 14 touchdowns. Right? Yep. Priest Holmes had one thousand seventy nine fifteen touchdowns in those eight games. So just three unreal seasons and then eight games on pace to have maybe a 30 touchdown season.
Got hurt, never really came back and bounced back. But, yeah, it's nice seeing him getting the love for the the scrimmage yard record that he has in 2002, where he averaged a 164 scrimmage yards a game for the whole season, 14 games.
So yeah. No. I just love my guy, Priest, always have, and seeing him kinda get some be part of the discourse on the national stage is nice.
I will I wanted to this is I I know Pinnix wasn't playing, but I also, like, I'm not sure Pinnix is that guy, like, yet. I I don't know that.
And when I'm at the game when I, like, I I'm at the game, I'm looking at the scores, and I see that the the dysfunctional Dolphins, the team that's a absolute circus, just circus, when they beat the Falcons 24 points at home, I'm like, the Falcons, man.
Like, what are we doing? Like, what what are you doing? And so I don't know. I'm after that, it's like, I it's it's really hard for me and watch it happen in Berlin.
They come out, and they look like the greatest freaking offense of all time. But it's just like, man, how do you let that happen? And so, like, that is something I just wanted to bring up.
It's like mid Falcons. That's tough. They lost to the Panthers 31. That's right. Like, they just have these games. I feel like I don't know. It's because I've been watching them closely.
And it's they like I said, they remind me of the Clippers with Darius Miles and all those guys where it's like, some games, it all clicks and you're like, holy shit. Drake London's awesome. Kyle Pitts is awesome. Bijan's amazing.
And then some games, I don't know if it's just they get behind and it fully changes how they can play football, but, yeah, get ahead and feed Bijan. That's it. Simple. Kirk Cousins is, like, completely washed, though, to be fair.
He's toast. Yes. Made a lot of money. Made a lot of money. My other point was the Chiefs are back, and the priest and Kelsey stats, but then that Colts Chiefs game is going to be awesome.
I'm already pumped for that. I'm thinking about going. It's in KC. Right? I got the approval while I was sitting in the stadium with my wife, and I gotta look at all the logistics.
But, I mean, this is when as a fan, you're experiencing a season like this, and it's like, that game's going to be so huge. It's like, should I get in the car and just go to Arrowhead?
And I I have a big list of stadiums that I've crossed off, and Arrowhead is not one of them. So I'm not I still need to do some work and research and stuff, but it's a possibility. What a what a great time to ask the question.
Probably right after the JT run, vibes are high. She was no way she's gonna say no to something like that in that moment. And in in a week, you'll be like, oh, yeah. By the way, I'm gonna go to Kansas City.
Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see. What hey, Josh. What is your, Football take? Yeah. On Well, my main take is, I don't know what kind of deal you made with the devil to get the Pacers to make this miraculous finals run game seven.
I know it didn't end the way you want, but every team would would have taken that. And now you have the best team in football with Daniel Jones at quarterback.
I don't understand it, but you should be enjoying every second of it coming from a cardinal sun span, just dealing with the worst two teams in both leagues. The Colts are actually the best team in the league.
They're plus one sixteen, and the Chiefs are second best at plus 83, and the Chiefs are third in the division, ironically enough. I'm not hearing people say the Colts are the best team.
I don't know how you can argue it. They're beating the crap out of every team. Plus one sixteen through eight weeks is insane. And I wrote cousins is washed. Mahomes and chiefs are back. Same as John. Chiefs are fun to watch again.
Not that those are back. They're, like, fun to watch. That was the thing is they were winning games, but they were boring. Mhmm. I think they're plus they're plus minus is already higher than last year, and they were fifteen and two.
Jeez. Yeah. It's, I'm just trying to enjoy it, man. It's I didn't expect this, but, yeah, it's like you never know how quickly these things are gonna come and go. So trying to trying to enjoy it.
The the other one that I wanna I think what's interesting and then just, for all of our AFC East supporters, like, I think this Patriots and Bills, like, who's gonna win the division is maybe the one of the most interesting.
The Patriots have already beat the Bills.
They play again. But, you know, Drake May is playing out of his mind. He's he's he's playing really well. Obviously, they got a good coach and the offensive coordinator. It's like the offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels.
He's just be, like, be the Patriots OC forever because it just seems to always work. But then I was looking, and I'm not the guy who's, like because people are doing this with the Colts. They were, like, oh, I haven't played anybody.
And it's, like, okay. And it's like, how what are they supposed to do? And it's like, you beat the chargers on the road. They haven't played any it's like, no matter what, you continue to hear that.
But I was looking at the patriots, because I was like, how good is this team? And I'm not saying that they're not good, but just the people that they put the teams they played against, it's a combined record of twenty one and forty.
So that's what they've played against. They've I've I made mention that they beat the Bills, who I think are a good team.
So I I'm very curious. Like, the Bills seem to be kind of a second half team typically, and I'm interested to see how that shakes out. I wanna ask you guys.
Do you is it do you guys have the Bills or the Patriots winning that division? Bills. The Patriots also have the easiest remaining schedule. Not only is their schedule been trashed to start, it's the easiest remaining.
But the Bills are gonna still win the division. Yeah. I mean, they're playing that lovely last play schedule. And I, yeah, I just can't bet against Josh Allen and the experience of that team once it comes down to it.
But, yeah, patriots look good, but, like, yeah, they're just beating bad teams. But, yeah, the Drake May having all this success after Jaden last year and as Caleb still just lags behind is just brutal. But, Yeah. They're they're good.
I I can't knock them. Like, Drake May's stats are sick. He's, like, number one in quarterback rating and I think top five QBR. Yeah. He's having a doozy. I wanted to say because I've spent a lot of time throwing him under the bus.
I I wanna my final point here is just congratulate Justin Fields on his first win. He talked about, like, when your owner comes out, what a dick, Like, throwing you under the bus and stuff.
And then Justin Fields, which I earned a lot of respect for and just being vulnerable and sharing how hard of a week this was and everything that he's he said.
And then to win the game by one point, it was like there was a piece of me being like, good for you, Justin Fields.
Like, you needed that. So it was it's I never like to see winless teams. And I feel like the jets, although they're not good, like, they should have already won at least one game.
So it's good to see the the win on the board. I know Bengals fans were just devastated because they were on the upward trajectory of we just won Thursday night against the Steelers.
And if these things happen, then Burrow comes back, and we're gonna make this playoff run. And it's just, like, one loss like that just kicks you right back down to reality.
I know I've lived it all too well as a Colts fan. Yep. I'm always rooting for Justin Fields. He's had a rough just landing place after landing place, so good to see him get a w.
And my last point, Ravens are gonna win that division. I think, like, the Steelers favorite right now. Are they favored to win? Yes. Yeah. It's gonna happen.
Even after them beating the Bears, which devastating that instead of one and six, they climb up to two are they two and five? Or yeah. But and the Steelers are down to four and three. Lamar is coming back. They're gonna go on a run.
The Bengals stink. The Browns stink. Just don't be surprised when the Ravens win that division. Okay. Market Watch. Let's talk about a couple of sales and then get out of here. Alright. What football cards are moving the market?
Shout out Market Watch, brought to you by our good friends at Card Ladder. How about a card that sold on eBay today as we record this? The 98 Flare Brilliance 24 karat gold PSA nine sold via best offer on eBay on October 29 for $40,000.
Who says big cards don't sell on eBay? This is a big sale. I was just pouring through the sales and card ladder. And this one, I was like, when did this sell on eBay? And I was like, oh, this sold moments ago.
So, big sale. You know, I shared it with some nineties gurus, and we're I was basically, do you see the sale? And a couple responses were, which this is they're infamous in the 24 karat golds is, some people called out the print line.
There's a print line on this card, and you look at the label PSA graded this thing probably in 1998. This is a relic here.
But I think that's interesting. Right? Like, you've got nineties collectors with and this thing is a 24 karat gold, which is certainly a a prestigious card of this era and, noticing some small details or imperfections on this.
So I'm guessing this card and I don't wanna downgrade this card because it's certainly a wonderful card, but I wonder what this card would grade if it was put back through the PSA machine in 2025.
But awesome sale nonetheless. Yeah. Those are awesome. The 24 carats are awesome cards.
Is there a 10, did you say, if there's a pop higher? I don't think I think there's three yeah. Three nines. Three nines. Yeah. That's crazy. Wake up Wednesday morning, have a cup of coffee, and then a $40 Barry Sanders.
It's a cool card, though. Josh, what do you think of the I know you're focusing in on the one of ones and kind of the this era, but, like, what are your thoughts on the 24 carats?
I'm amazed that the prices of these Barry Sanders cards number to 20 and above relative to the modern one on ones.
But, you know, nobody collects football. So what do I know? You know, I know something something you do know, and that's, you know you know Larry Fitzgerald, and you know Larry Fitzgerald, collecting in cards.
And so this is the first public sale which that I could find, was the 2012 Larry Fitzgerald Gold Prism PSA nine, which this card is so sick.
Like, god, in the black jersey with the gold frame, like, white helmets, like, this card, every time I see it, I'm like, damn.
This is cool. This thing sold on eBay too this week, October 24 for $7,000. Yeah. It Josh, I wanna pass it to you. Larry Fitzgerald, he's your he's your he's your guy. Like, what do you think of this sale?
I think I bought one of those privately for Larry to have in his collection for, like, a thousand bucks two years ago. And then I don't know if you know, but we we did buy the, Black Friday night as well with this card.
So he owns the Black Friday night of that. I I don't know if I I knew what, was was that a private deal? Yeah. Wow. That how about that? That's pretty cool to know that Larry Fitzgerald himself owns the black finite.
That was gonna be my next question. It was like, has anyone ever seen the finite before? Yeah. I think it was, like, sitting in the alt vault for a while. The person you think you might know that owned it owned it. Mhmm.
Did when was that set? When did that that wasn't this year, was it? That was, like, a year ago. Oh, god. What a time to buy a card. It was so pretty expensive. I can't imagine what that card would go do on the open market today, though.
Right? But I think those black finite twenty twelves were, like, quietly selling for a lot of money privately. And then we saw the Clay Matthews and a couple other ones, and then it was like, oh, and it's color.
Sorry. And then I was like, oh, wow. These are selling for a lot. But I I actually have seen a few of them sell privately for pretty big money, like, a a year ago.
So I don't think it's, like I that's why when I told John, like, I wasn't at all surprised about the price. I think I even, like, nailed the prediction to be so I wasn't surprised.
Yeah. I mean, that was part of spending that money was, like, just hearing what some of those were fetching or be even the asking prices. Yeah. That people hold that in high regard.
Yeah. We all this trio, we are all now owners of twenty twelve Finites. Yes, sir. It's a good place to good place to be. We've got one more card, and it is the 2014 Bowman Chrome Aaron Rodgers Superfractor BGS 9.
5, selling for $13,800 on Fanatics Weekly on October 26. And this is an interesting year because this is Panini. This is like the bridge here where you've got some tops and you got some Panini stuff.
And I've always felt like some of those top sets and Bowman sets aren't the best. But the market is speaking right now, and this is the highest selling Aaron Rodgers super fracture of all time that just went off the board.
So cool photo. But yeah. And when I saw the sale in comparison to everything else, it made it made me wonder, like, does this mean from now on on any of this stuff, like the chrome, the finest, the bowman stuff, super factors?
Like, is it all just going up from here?
So that's kind of what's on my mind when it comes to this sale. What do you guys think? I would much rather have this than the Barry Sanders, especially at a quarter of the cost. And Rogers is, like, four time MVP.
He's only got so many super factor. He has less super factors, and Barry Sanders has 24 karat golds. That's that's what I was thinking when the 24 karat came up that Josh's response was gonna be 23 too many. Exactly, dude.
This card rules, man. Freaking Bowman Chrome Superfractor for $13. Yeah. Coming from a basketball world, which is my background, like, this stuff, I you know, like, it's relatively very cheap compared to the basketball players.
You guys already know that. Mhmm. So to see, like, Aaron Rodgers, four time MVP, top five quarterback of all time, sell for a one of one from, like, his heyday, sell for $14 is, like, kind of jarring to me.
Pac, do you have anything nice to say about Aaron Rodgers? I'll say that that, like, I don't love 2014 Bowman Chrome. Like, the golds are underwhelming, and, like, I don't love the design, but the Superfractor looks awesome.
And, yeah, I mean, all things considered, I just feel like Rodgers' people are not the it's not the same as LeBron, but, like, late in the career on this team that like, no one's, like, really rooting for Rodgers right now.
You know what I mean? And I think once he retires, he will start to people will look back and be like, oh, shit. He won so many MVPs. He should have won so many Super Bowls.
He was, like, the best quarterback in the league for a long, long time. I think history will be kind to Aaron Rodgers, and maybe they'll forget that he's, like, a terrible person and alienates his family and no one likes him.
But, yeah, I think he'll be he'll be collectible as as the years go. I'm I'm glad that it's not ending with what happened in New York, and there's like, he's he's fun to watch on Yeah.
He he moments. You don't he's not, like, the same, like, you know, four time MVP level, but he still can make a lot of good plays. And it just seemed like it was so tainted in New York that it he's got, like, a new on life a little bit.
And you always wanna see these all time greats kinda end end in a good spot. And I feel like we're we're probably gonna get that, you know, barring some injury from Aaron Rodgers, which is good to see.
Yeah. No. It's I he he's not on the Packers anymore, so I can't hate him. Alright. Episode 19. We did it. Card call out. Last week, we asked to see pairs of cards from the same set, same year, same parallel. Great turnout for that.
Continuing with the same theme, let's see trios. Let's see and but removing the qualifications of same set, parallel everything. Just like a cool grouping of three cards. But they need a bonus points for how well they link together.
If it is same set, same parallel, everything, bonus points. But or if you have a good story about why these three link together, share that. Post it on your story tag, the football card pod on Instagram.
We will reshare them. Try and reshare I try and reshare every single one that gets tagged, but I noticed I missed a few when I was in Las Vegas over the weekend, because I had, like, story notifications that had expired.
So I'm sorry for that hand up. That's on me. I gotta get better. But, please keep at it this week. We will reshare every single one. And, yeah, thank you for listening to the Football Card Podcast. We'll see you next week.
