The Football Card Podcast #16: There's Few Nicknames Better Than Concrete Charlie
Hello, and welcome. This is the Football Card Podcast, the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that is centered on football, cards, and most importantly, football cards.
I'm your host, John, aka Pack Nicholson. And with me, as always, is Brett, mister Stackings Labs himself.
Brett, how are you doing? I think I'm still tired from the week before. I was thinking about this. This whole week, I've been dragging. The coffee is not working, and I just it started back on Thursday night football.
You had the a really good game that I stayed up all night between the Rams and forty niners. And then you have Sunday night football, Patriots Bills, another good game.
And then Monday night football, you have Jaguars Chiefs, another good game. So I literally watched all of those games end to end, and it's I'm, I'm deprived of my normal sleep, but that's what the NFL does to you.
Yeah. I I watched all of them. And even last night, I stayed up, watched the whole Yankees game. I've pushed my bedtime as closer to midnight these days.
I don't know. And that's that's it's early relative to what it used to be, but nowadays, you know, midnight, I gotta cut it off at midnight. My wife always says she asked me, how do you do it? And I'm just like, it's sports.
Like, how do you not do it? Like, consuming the information the next day, especially when they're really good games, is nowhere near as fun as sitting there and watching the drama unfold. Yeah. And, like, what else am I doing?
I'm gonna go lay in bed, and then I'm just gonna wonder what's going on in that game. And I'm gonna look at my phone, and then the screen is getting in front of me somehow. The info needs to get to me somehow.
Do you want it to be downstairs in my own peaceful, situation on a couch or laying in bed with a blue glow glowing next to you? So I I I get in these conversations with friends or maybe not into them.
I'm on the outside of them, but these will be out to dinner or will be, you know, texting and group chats, and people will be talking about these shows on these streaming services.
And I'll just be like, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Don't you guys watch sports too? Because the way I watch sports, it dominates the landscape. There are no time for any of these shows, these, dramas, and these streaming services that people consume all their time with.
And they yeah. I feel like an idiot. We will not be starting a a podcast on number one shows to watch on your streaming service because it would last probably for a minute or two because I don't have much to say about that.
But sports, on the other hand, and football, I can I can go for days?
I I do love having a weekly show. I love a HBO show. Not during football season. I mean, I it's always brutal when they conflict. But, and have you ever watched Survivor?
Maybe, like, maybe, like, the the first Survivor, but I have not I can't it's a good gimmick, but I I just my I've I think I have, like yeah. I just don't I just never invest. I I'm scared of investing.
Yeah. No. I I hear you. During I'd never watched Survivor, but during COVID, I was like, I get I gotta see what the hype's about. And I, like, Googled, like, best Survivor seasons ever, and we crushed a couple.
And I'm like, okay. I get it. There's a beautiful science to the show. Jeff Probst is the man. And we start, like, this season because it's every Wednesday.
It's like, alright. We can we can get a show. Wednesday, there's no football. And it kind of fits in a nice, slot right there. So watching this current season of Survivor, it's only a couple episodes in.
But, yeah, I like having a show. Nothing wrong with a little show. Did you ever watch the Joe Schmo Show? Yeah. That I was thinking of Joe millionaire, but Joe Schmo Show, I don't know.
Yeah. So they, like, staged this reality show, and it was this I think the show was called the lap of luxury. And I can't remember the logistics, but it it was kinda like survivor style and the the winner won like a million dollars.
But the the the the the bit was everyone was in on it, but the one guy. And so that real reality, man, reality TV back in the day used to be so cool. That one was captivating because I'm not sure it's ever been done.
But the at the end, you're just waiting for the big reveal where he just realizes it's all, you know, he was living in a land of, fake news and gimmicks, and it's one of the best reactions on in in the history of television.
I like that. I like reality TV, though, you're right. There was the peak, and I guess this is just probably my opinion on most things. Early two thousands was the peak. But A 100%. Because social media ruined everything.
Where now, like, you can get on these reality shows and you can tell the people on there are angling to try and get famous via socials or go viral or have these moments and because the all the contestants do end up getting, you know, notoriety and follows and all that.
But, yeah, something about early seasons of Survivor.
There are some great ones out there where it's pure. Like, these people are in it for the love of the game and not thinking about, like, trying to get fame out of it, but just trying to to win.
So I don't know. If, any survivor fans out there, hit me up. We'll talk talk a little survivor. Maybe we should, maybe the Football Card podcast should start our own reality show and, pitch it to Netflix.
You think anyone here would watch? I don't know. What do you wanna watch me for three hours scrolling on eBay and card lighter? From eight to eleven? That exciting. We try to make it exciting, but it's not. Yeah.
You're probably right. Alright. Speaking of card ladder Yes. Yeah. Shout out to our our our sponsors, the official data provider of the football card podcast. Our good friends at card ladder, wouldn't know what to do without that tool.
And I I I'm not like a when it comes to my cards, I'm a physical guy, but, we've talked about this. I've been digging more and more into the collection feature and making it a habit to once I get a new card, put it in there.
And, I'm really enjoying that workflow. And, our good friends at Haystack, we're having fun working with them. Breakers Connect product.
Definitely go to haystack. tech. Free for users who participate in breaks with Haystack Partners. They receive same day images of their hits and ability to list, grade, and share those cards immediately after the break.
So thank you everyone for listening and supporting the Football Card Podcast, and, also, very special thank you to Card Ladder and Haystack.
Question about your card ladder collection. Do you put raw cards into that? I do not. Nope. It has to be graded to make it in.
Because my I I will say this. A lot of the cards I buy, maybe it it ebbs and flows. More recently, I've been doing direct deals, which typically involve slabbed cards. But a lot of the eBay purchases I make are raw cards.
And so my workflow is typically, like, buy 30 raw cards, which might span over, I don't know, six months. And once I get to this point in my case where there's a bunch of raw cards, then I do a PSA sub.
And then when I get the PSA subs back, then they go into card buyer. That's kinda my that's kinda how how the sausage is made at Stacking Slabs HQ. What about you? Same except I put the color finite into my collection.
I had to. I was like Had to. I wanna be able to see that as part of the collection. So that's that's the only rock art. It does stick out a little bit, but, yeah, it's gonna be like that for a little bit.
So needed it. You yeah. Well, you know, when you have a you gotta see the the the value of the collection go up. There's a dopamine element to that. So if I would have done what you did, I probably would have done the same move.
Well, that was a factor too where I'm like, oh, my value on the collection just took a big hit because I got rid of all these cards. But, like, they don't know that I turned it into a different card.
I need my portfolio to reflect that. I wish card ladder, they're not gonna do this, but what if card ladder, like, had a, AI bot and whenever you got rid of sales or whenever you added new sales, like, it was like like a commentator.
They, like, commented their opinion about what you're doing with your collection. Would you would you think that was annoying?
Would you have fun with it? Like, what would you do? I know we're in a world of AI, so I've gotta incorporate it here somewhere. Oh, I don't know. Because I feel like it would just tell me what I wanna hear.
Sure. Right? Like, I don't know. I bet you could do that with chat g p t. Just put in your collection and be like, what do you think of this? In a positive tone Or roast roast my collection.
It'll it'll do that. That's our next segment is, AI generated, roast of our pickups, and we'll share with everyone who's tuning in to the Football Card Podcast. Yes. Alright. Football Card Podcast episode 16, the Joe Montana episode.
So I'll run through a couple sixteens, and then I think we picked something to talk about. But like I said, Montana hall of famers that stand out. Joe Montana, George Blanda, Frank Gifford, Ken Stabler, who Ken Stabler is a badass.
Just in unreal where was it? I think he just looks badass. MVP, Super Bowl champ, all the things. Some other notable sixteens, some contemporaries, Trevor Lawrence and Jared Goff.
Those are two current sixteens that stand out. And more recently, Joe Flacco on the Bengals is wearing number 16. And then Jake Plummer, Arch Manning. Those are a couple more sixteens to round it out for you.
Is there any way at the end of this season, Joe Flacco plays well enough and Aaron Rodgers retires that the Steelers have to sign Joe Flacco. So then Joe Flacco can say he played for every AFC North team.
He has to complete that has to, right? Yeah. Within the same season would be cool. Maybe maybe the Ravens come calling again. I mean, Lamar, the Lamar's hurt. Team's in disarray. Maybe the Magic is, sitting there in Cincinnati now.
You know, what's a a weird one that maybe others don't recognize? There's another player who I believe we've talked about on this podcast before, hall of fame talent, who in the AFC South didn't it did not quite, complete the quad pack.
But you have Andre Johnson, obviously a Texan, spent time with the Colts, a year with the Colts, and then spent a year with Tennessee. No Jacksonville, but he's just short of completing that, AFC South, quad pack.
Wow. I didn't realize you went to the Titans. Mhmm. I didn't realize Forgettable. Yeah. Wow. So did Randy Moss. So did Julio Jones. That's kinda like the last stop for legendary receivers.
All roads city. All roads leave to Nashville. Fun city. Good food. Oh, yeah. Hey. Not a bad place to ride off into the sunset. That's right. Shout out Jake Plummer. A great 16. Jake Plummer, I believe I shoulda had this pulled up.
But statistically ended his career, Yeah. 161 touchdowns, 161 picks. And I think his last throw was a pick to get him even. He told a story about it. I think I'm pardon my take. But, yeah, nice little one sixty one, one sixty one.
And then one that I had to shout out, my guy Craig Krenzel. Yeah. He, Ohio State national champion, goes to the Bears in a o four draft and ended up starting in 02/2004. He started '3 and o. He came in and, they won three games.
I thought it's Craig Krenzel the future, and then I mean, he absolutely wasn't. But for a brief moment, Craig Krenzel in 2004 had the Bears on a roll. So shout gotta shout him out. I remember that. Back to Jake Plummer.
Jake Plummer, man, I remember and this is, like, on the verge of me, like, I was still involved in cards and collectibles, but in, like, September, I just remember Jake Plummer being on so many hobby boxes and, like, being marketed to us as, like, the net the next big thing.
And, like, I was big into starting lineups back then, and he was he had, like, a figure that was a part of, like, the extended set.
And I remember, like, chasing it. And it was, like, there was just so much hype around Jake Plummer. And he ended his career, like you mentioned, just as many touchdowns as interceptions.
And that's just so symbolic for the the marketability of some of these players over the course of time. But when you say Jake Plummer, like everyone listening, kinda can remember Jake Plummer and that career trajectory and path.
So shout out all you Jake Plummer fans and collectors and anyone who got sucked into the manufacturer hype when he was a rookie because he was on every hobby box under the sun.
Yeah. Just electric college career too, which I feel like led to that, hobby love.
I feel like yeah. The snake, baby. I had to I had to I had to just say Joe mine was so chalk. I was Joe Montana was my selection. One of the greatest football players of all time.
Notre Dame fighting Irish. Obviously, legend there. Four time Super Bowl champion. He's on my short list for greatest football players ever. And I just feel like he doesn't get still to this day enough credit hobby credit.
And I think it's one of those elements of his era in the cards. And so a lot of the there's great Montana collectors out there, and a lot of them have to collect, you know, post playing day stuff, which is really cool.
And and to me, always, Joe Montana is the exception to the rule. Like, you say, well, I'm not collecting post playing day stuff. But I think, you know, even if you have that rule, Montana is the exception.
So great player. I love I love I was so I was young when he was, like, in his element. And so I've gone back, and I love looking at old Montana games and clips on YouTube, just as a reminder for how great he is.
Because it just like, in this era of the media and clips and videos, it seems like his era, like, just isn't recognized as much as, some of the next era.
So shout out Joe Montana. Also, shout out to Kyle McGrath, my brother McGrath cards.
He in high school at Cathedral, he was the quarterback, and he wore 16. And he was a two time state champion. Should have been three time state champion. He's gonna be pissed off when he hears that.
But he had a drive, in one of his roads to, the state championship playing East Central, and there was a column where they can't they didn't do shit all game, and then they had a comeback drive.
And Kyle led that in. The columnist referred to Kyle as Montana like drive.
And so Kyle is always I believe his fraternity name was Joe Cool after Montana. So my brother, I'm letting it all out here. But whenever I think of Montana, I think of my brother and just the connection there. So shout out, Kyle.
Wow. I hope he that clipping has to sort of be somewhere. He's got it he's got it he's got it framed. Yeah. For sure. I would let everyone know about that for the rest of my life. Yeah. Hell, yeah. Cool. Episode 16. Let's get into it.
I think we have a new release to talk about. Yes. We have a new release. And this is the release date on this, and, obviously, this is all, subject to change and shout out Haystack for sponsoring the new release section.
We are going to be talking about twenty twenty five impeccable football with the release date of October 15.
Eight cards per pack, one pack per box, three boxes per case. You get either five to six autos per pack and two to three parallels. So I think, you know, if you're an auto big auto collector, Impeccable is a good product for you.
What was just incredible to me in just researching 2025 Impeccable is the fact that this is the tenth year in a row that impeccable football has dropped.
And to me, that was astounding. I had they have never collected impeccable. However, I know there are segments of the hobby and football card collectors who like impeccable.
And what I think is interesting about impeccable, but it also, like, causes me to wonder, like, why impeccable football hasn't gotten the traction it has is that it is a product where the inserts and the insert sets and the autographs, it's, like, all centered around, like, capturing moments.
When I saw, like, this was the product that was coming up, I instantly thought of, like, my Manning group chat.
And some of the collectors in there owning, like, one of one impeccables of Manning, and they're, like, from Super Bowl forty one capturing that, and just capturing specific moments.
And we always hear collectors talk about wanting a better connection on cards with moments. And so I think Impeccable offers that, which I think is super cool.
And, obviously, this will be the last Impeccable set. So I guess my question to you, Pac, is if Impeccable is all about the moments, and I think from, like, an artistic perspective and the the design, they're definitely unique cards.
Why don't you think Impeccable has ever been able to really get established as one of the, top tier sets amongst football card collectors or in the regular dialogue of football card collectors?
Because it's just not one of those products after ten years that I seem to hear about outside of on release day when boxes are being ripped.
I don't know. That's a good question. I think maybe because it blends in so much with, like, a flawless n t like, it's a premium product, but, like, they'll on the bottom end of the premium products, maybe. I don't know.
Like, on on the sliding scale, maybe that hurts it. I'm looking up highest selling impeccable cards of all time. Number one is Cristiano Ronaldo. Oh. And it's a sick looking card. A 112,000 for his 2021 impeccable Premier League.
112? 112,000. Number seven out of seven. The highest Football card podcast. Yeah. The highest football American football card is a 2017 impeccable elegance rookie dual NFL logo autograph Patrick Mahomes.
Pretty sick card for 72,000 in July 2022 though, which seems like a I don't know if that's a good deal now, but it seems like a one of one shield of rookie Mahomes auto would go for more than $72,000 right now.
But what do I know? But, yeah, I I don't know. It looking through it, it's cool.
And I think part of it is through this segment, which I like, is, like, going on these deep dives through sets. And I think it takes doing that to, like, gain the appreciation to the and then want to collect it.
Like, if I'm just scrolling my phone on a normal day, I'm probably never coming across a post that's, like, here's why impeccable is awesome. But I feel like all the time I'm seeing, here's why these certain cards are cool or not.
So, yeah, maybe a lack of content, but I don't know. I think everything might have its time or people will eventually discover stuff, especially, I think, as we change into the tops fanatics era.
I do think there will be panini sets that people start looking back on, and they start realizing, like, oh, flawless is really expensive, but impeccable is relatively cheap.
And maybe I should try and and there's ten years of in a row of it. Let's try and put together some runs.
I don't know. You said something there that I just I couldn't agree with more. I think we need more content focused around specific products, because I think that's it's severely lacking in this space right now.
And I hope you come to the Football Card Podcast to, hear some of that. I am, thinking more and more, and I dropped This Will Go Live.
I did something I don't normally do. I released an episode yesterday, which, this is weird because it hasn't been released as we're recording it. But, hey, podcasting on just Prism and this, the hand off to tops.
We wanna look forward always and talk about tops, but I kinda just hit pause and spent, I don't know, forty five minutes talking about Prism. So, looking to maybe do more of that in the future, but that's that's just sidebar.
Neither here nor there. I think it's something needed. But, yeah. I'm excited to see just, this impeccable product release. And if you are, interested in it, definitely check out haystack dot tech and their breaking partners.
Appreciate them and their sponsorship. Yep. Alright. Into our unnamed question segment, which I gotta I think I'm gonna just start pitching names for this and see see what you think.
So Okay. In the in the initial peek behind the curtain here at the football card podcast, in the initial doc, I just had labeled this as kickoff. But, I mean, maybe we're selling ourselves short, just calling it the kickoff.
Maybe this is now the dynamic kickoff is what this segment's called. And do we still do they still call it the dynamic kickoff or have we settled that it is now the kickoff?
That's a great question. I I I just hear the kickoff. I've I think they've dropped the dynamic. So maybe the Football Card Podcast, since the the the shield dropped it, we can pick it up and place it on this segment.
Yeah. It's like when, the, like, trademarks expired for, like, Winnie the Pooh, and, like, someone swooped in and got it and could make a movie out of it.
Like, the NFL dropped the ball and dynamic kickoff, and it's ours now. That's, exactly right. And it's the other one I remember is, Sierra Mist. Everyone's like, what happened to Sierra Mist?
Well, Sierra Mist, I think they had a PepsiCo. They didn't necessarily do their, they weren't paying attention on the the renewal of the trademark, and some TikToker ripped it off, and then they had to create Starry instead.
But people are like, what's Starry? It's it's freaking Sierra Mist. It's just new new can, new name. That's incredible. All the people are wondering what happened to Sierra Mist.
Yeah. Sorry, everybody. They're sponsoring all all the NBA stuff. Alright. Maybe they can sponsor us. They should. They should. Shout out our existing sponsors, though. We love them.
But, hey, plenty of room on the show. I'd I'd I'd chug 12 stories as we do this. Come on. Wow. Wow. Football card podcast, I've we just gotta become like a NASCAR where the the podcast cover art is just sponsors everywhere.
You just see our eyes. Yeah. Alright. Shout out our sponsors. Alright. Questions from the loyal listeners. This is from Chargers PC sports cards.
What's the longest you've held off from purchasing or buying a new card? Weeks? Months? I can What'd you say? I said, I've gone over a month before, within this new window of my collecting life the past several years.
I think it kinda comes in waves. A lot of times, it'll be on the heels of a big purchase where I'm just like, alright. I can't buy a card for a month. And that makes it easier to me just like putting those guardrails in place.
Like, not buying anything for a month. So, I don't check see save searches every day. I'm less of a eBay degenerate during that time. I don't always know if I last the full month. Probably around three weeks, I'm like, hey.
I've been pretty good. I couple paychecks have come in since that purchase. That's all in the past now. I can I can start buying things again? But then there are, like, moments where I'm buying stuff all the time.
And, yeah, it just kinda comes and goes. I I have to do a little self regulation, but I'd say the longest span has definitely been over a month. I don't know if I've made it to two months, but I'd say a month is the longest.
Yeah. I'm, approximately at a month or so. I have learned that I tend to binge buy. And I don't know why, but I was like when I saw this question, I was going back and looking back at my history.
And it seems to me that whenever I buy a big card, it's like I get this bug and just kinda buy for a stretch, and then I'll stop. And, yeah. I I have never really thought about that.
And this always happens, dude. I'll buy win an auction, and I'll have just bought another card before that. And then I'll get, like, the DM from somebody that's saying, hey, you know this card you've been waiting for?
Like, it's I'll make it available to you. And so it's just like, all of a sudden, I am going from having all of these fun discretionary funds to having zero.
And then I'm like, alright. Let's just, like, not try to pay attention. But inevitably, I pay attention to save searches and just get in the spiral.
But it's nice sometimes when it's quiet. I think I I've learned too that I don't necessarily need to buy to stay engaged with how much many things that are going on in my hobby experience right now. But buying is fun.
The the more I've matured, the less buying I have to do, and I think that's a pretty good realization. Yeah. Just understanding, like, hey. I'm gonna miss cards. Like, and if it just wasn't meant to be at at that time.
Like, yeah. I probably missed out on cards during, like, month hiatus when I'm paying off a different purchase, but it's like it was for, like, not getting that card is the reason I have this card.
So I you can't can't beat yourself up about having to get every single thing the second it drops.
But, yeah, just ride the waves. Next question from seven forty Smith cards. Justin says, can we take a look back and celebrate the oversized shoulder pads and massive neck rolls from time gone by?
Who needs sleek aerodynamic uniforms when smashing someone with a blind side block in oversized pads made us all jump off the couch and cheer?
When I saw this, immediately, I thought of Brian Cox, which he spent some time in Chicago, didn't he? I I mean, I think of him I think more as a a dolphin, but I just think about that that cowboy collar.
He used to just rock people, and he was kinda scary. But that era is sorely missed because there's something about the cowboy collar in the nineties, early two thousands that just that hits different.
Yeah. It looks like Bears '96, '97. Mike Allstock came to mind for me. I mean, A Train, the ultimate low man wins, big shoulder pads.
But then I started thinking about Brian Bosworth, the boss, and just how ahead of the time was the boss ahead of his time was the boss. I mean, if he he walked so Johnny Football could run.
That's right. It was about, he knew how to create a character. And I would have to imagine Boz was watch and some, like, Hogan and Macho Man and Ultimate Warrior during that era because he was that for football.
And, dude, how about the how about, like, the the you know, he's talking all the smack about him and Bo Jackson and blah blah blah.
And, like, Bo Jackson just absolutely destroy exposes the bars. Like, that's a good football story line. But, yeah, man.
Boz was he wasn't as good as he made himself to be, but it it was all smoke and mirrors, which is kinda fun. Yeah. But he would thrive in today's environment of TikTok and NIL. Can you imagine the NIL deals that guy would be getting?
It's it's kinda like that baby Gronk. I was just thinking. I was like, you yeah. Baby Gronk is gonna get the deal of the century, and he's gonna line up for, like, I don't know, Alabama or Georgia and just be terrible.
Like, that's what I'm anticipating. No way. No way. He's already too far gone. Poor kid. Yeah. Boz the Boz, though, cracking me up, I didn't he was before my time.
I mean, I know of him. I've seen the documentaries. But I forgot that during a game when he was fighting the NCAA because he wanted, them to be able to make more money and which, again, fighting the good fight early on.
In '87, though, he pulled off his jersey and had a t shirt that said NCAA, national communist against Athletes. What a troll. Well, that's that's This isn't good. That's a great shirt.
Oh, boy. Wonder if that's on eBay. Yeah. I'm sure there's one out there. Yeah. Rod Goodell would've hated him. He wouldn't have let him disrespect the shield like that. Can't do it. Alright. Next up, from board card collector.
Just a statement. College cards don't get enough hobby love. You know, you know, I don't hear any of the mainstream hobby influencers talking about college cards. However, I really enjoy collegiate collector pages.
I'm gonna shout out a few here. Nerds cards, shout out big Louisville collector, RockChalk cards, big, Kansas collector. He hasn't posted in a while, but Domar cards, big Notre Dame fan, great collection.
Wolverine's collector, eighties, a, Michigan fan. I I love it when I come across a highly curated, college football page. Like, there's some cool cards, and I've seen a lot of Notre Dame collectors over the years.
And I've always been like, maybe I should start one of those. And I'm always just like, well, all these cool cards are in these collections. What am I gonna collect? But, yeah, I don't know.
I've people will say, like, they're the collector's collector because, you know, these cards aren't necessarily, blowing the roof off on prices. Although, I do know there's demand and there are collegiate football collecting circles.
I just think it's kinda like an untapped territory that we don't often talk about because these cards aren't going nuclear in kind of the weekly auction format.
Yeah. It, to me, is an awesome lane of collecting. If I were a passionate college football fan, I would a 100% be collecting in that area.
Like, I have a lot of my friends went to Ohio State and are diehard Buckeye. Like, they care more about Saturday than Sunday. And, you know, I think there's many people like that in the world.
So I don't know. I could definitely see college cards continuing to catch on. It's just yeah. It there's something so pleasant about, like, what you're saying, a page that is just full of these, like the way they all flow together.
I mean, I know NFL teams have the same but even same same way if I just go onto a page that collects just one NFL team.
It's always very pleasing to see the cohesion. But this question also got me thinking about hobby love. And what does getting hobby love mean? Like, is that just content that's being created around cards?
Is it high sales, highly transacted, visible cards? I guess, curious, Brett, what you think. What is hobby love? I think it's all the things. I think it's content. I think it's regular discourse on platforms like Instagram and stories.
I think it's auction and auction coverage. These things that we expect to have happen when we feel like maybe something is topical, like, kaboom or something like that. In my time back in the cards, I've, you know, here we go.
This is actually good. For the first time, we're starting to see this, I think, with college football cards. And I don't know if anybody or if anybody's been paying attention or if anybody follows it.
Ryan card collector too on his show cards and content, he's doing a weekly segment with Gabey Card Stacks, and they're just talking about college football cards, like, during the season.
So with someone with a platform that big who's that passionate, maybe it becomes more topical because you have, someone who's, very known in this space like Ryan, elevating a category that's often underserved.
So I just said that as kind of like a example to help validate. That hasn't happened up until now, so maybe there'll be some more coverage around these cards.
I personally think this is, like, a really cool lane. If you in this NIL era, if you want to think about, like, collegiate cards from, like, an investing and sell before or, like, a draft or something like that.
And I think a lot of their conversations are kind of about that. So there's fun there's fun ways to approach college football cards that haven't been really organized or consistent in the past.
But, yeah, I just think all like, to answer the question, it's just kinda all the things that take place that can be wrapped around, like, marketing, new products, or products in general.
Yep. And I will say I have a small collection of because I collect Bonzi Wells as a fellow Ball State University alumni, and I like having his cards when he has a Ball State jersey on.
I mean, they're all, like, press pass or there are some rookies that he's still in that jersey.
But, yeah, again, I I can totally see how as college sports continues to be a huge market and there are diehard fans of these universities, that's a segment that will grow.
I will say this. One final note. I was at Notre Dame Stadium this weekend, which, I was very thankful. It was really hot, and I was in the shade. Notre Dame played Boise State after the game.
I jumped into the bookstore and bought a CJ Carr jersey. And on my way home, I was thinking about, man, it'd be fun when CJ Carr is in Bowman Chrome, you to get his first, like, super fracture.
And I was like, that car is gonna be in high demand. So, like, it's beginning to enter my brain, more than it has in the past, which I think is cool.
Yeah. No. And especially when they're in the jerseys, get a sick patch. There's or a super factor. Yeah. There's it's a whole untapped lane. Alright. Next question. From Pigskin Pancake Sports Cards.
Will the new Prism release be more hyped than usual due to it being the last year of it? I don't know if it'll be more hyped than usual. I think it will be hyped, and I think there is nothing, and I repeat, nothing like a Prism drop.
It does something to this hobby that no other product does. It unites a lot of different personas, collectors, investors, flippers, everybody. It's breakers. It is it's awesome, and I'm going to miss it.
I'm going to enjoy the shit out of this last one. I'm going nuts, baby. This is the last time right now that I'll be able to just get be obsessive compulsive on my safe searches, try to pick up cards in real time.
So I think you're going to have collectors be like, yeah. It's the last year, like, positioning. Oh, that you gotta go out and, you know, pick up your guys, and they're gonna be worth more. Like, those narratives will be created.
But I also think, like, you're you're you're pairing the final setup with, like, a really fun and exciting rookie class of guys that a lot of people will be chasing, and it's different. Last year, you had the quarterbacks.
This year, it's more skilled guys. So I think that's fun. The design, I don't know. There is a I just I'm not craze I'm not crazy, but I I you warm up you warm up to it. It's no 2024. That's for damn sure.
But, I'm excited. I'm sad, and I'm also kind of happy in a way. It's like the mixed emotions on Prism being over with. But I'm going I'll be I'm gonna grab the megaphone and stand at the top of the mountain and yell, go, Prism.
Go. Yeah. I was thinking to myself, do last year's carry any sort of premium, or do people care? And I don't think they do in the long run.
Like, the only thing I could really think of as a comparison is Topps Chrome basketball and, like, the LeBron James gold refractor run from o three to o nine. O nine is not more collectible just because it's the last year of that run.
I think it still comes down to, like, designs that will stay memorable or not. Like, o nine is a very cool card. It's like the horizontal. He's going up for a windmill dunk, but people prefer the chalk toss.
People prefer his o six that's out of 25. You know, there's just other years that stand out more. I had not looked up the 2025 design at all, and, yeah, that's for Prism.
It's not my favorite. It's reminds me of 2016 where it had like, call me a simpleton, but I like my gold to be just full and, like, I don't need the black interrupting gold borders where it's, like, kind of the black machine looking.
It has, like, some of those features to it. But I need to see it in action. Like, I need to see a gold refract or gold prism, you know, shining in the light to fully cement where it stacks up.
But, yeah, right now off these first images, not looking like my favorite. An unnamed source, referred to the look and feel as similar to, like, the, Panini like, it's like a Panini national card. You know?
Mhmm. Which that kind But yeah. The yeah. The name of the player in that Yes. It looks like the Panini. That's a good call. Final note on me. On this. Sorry. Panini, you wanna rock the boat. You want this to be a unforgettable set.
This is what you do. You strip it all the way down. All you give us, black finites, golds, and then you can throw in the greens and the reds like you did. Same parallel structure as 2012. That's how you do it. That that would be fun.
But instead, I bet they roll out for new pear blossoms. We're gonna I want all I want the fruit rainbow. Are we gonna get Nebula organ, or are they gonna do collector as a service and just make it a one year thing?
No. They'll do it again. Damn it. They'll do Nebula black stars. They'll do nebula they'll mix them all together. They're gonna they're because they're emptying the vat. Yeah. They're emptying the vats.
Yeah. The Nebula vat. They have so much Nebula juice saved up that they're gonna have to sprinkle it on every everything. But they've been putting nebula on every new prod nebula is a I I figure, how do they have nebula juice left?
It's been on every new product has nebula. Like, how do they have any left? They hit a well. They hit a deep Nebula well, somewhere out there. Somewhere in South America, wherever you mine for Nebula.
I thought it was outer space. Yeah. Actually, yeah. I that's, what's the crater where, somewhere in, like, the Yucatan Peninsula is Yes. There we go. That's where the nebula is. Because it came from outer space, hit Earth.
You know, there's a whole backstory to the the Nebula juice. Yeah. And one other thing I was thinking about is just with Fanatics taking over. Like, Fanatics doesn't want Prism to be a hype thing.
Like, like, they will do what they can to make other products get more attention and hobby love. And I always found it interesting when, the whole Jaden Daniels finite sale happened Yes. With, like, Roth cards to the Yes.
Owner. Like, they did not want that to be a Panini card. No. You could tell that they were when, like, I thought Roth had, like, a good point where he's like, the Skeens, you know, debut patch was over a million.
This should be more. And they're like, well, that's a Topps debut patch. So, like, this is a Panini card, and I don't know.
It's just the the powers that be don't want, Prism to be, like, just known as the best product out there when they are now entering the space. I I will say this, and I've thought about what you just talked about a lot.
I will say this. I know Topps Chrome came out before Prism. Topps Chrome never had the launch days and the reaction like Prism. The the brand in the hearts and minds of collectors in this era has been dominated by Prism.
I am saying this, and it's a challenge. It is a challenge to try to create what has been created by Panini through the Prism product. It is it is it is special, and we're letting go of that.
And I fear and that we're seeing this on the final days of Panini and Prism with DECA and black and all this stuff. I'm glad that didn't exist throughout the whole run because it would've watered it all down.
But, you know, tops, you've got the flagship, the chrome, the saff, all these these different flavors and variations, I feel like it loses its luster a little bit.
So, yeah, I if I'm I'm interested to see how it all unfolds, and it'll be interesting fast forward ten years from now, like, how we're thinking about TOPSCHOM.
I can't predict the future, but I can say that this era of prism has been very special for a lot of reasons. Yeah. And it because it took thirteen years to get here.
Like, Prism releases were not hyped seven years ago, eight years ago. I've been doing, like, a lot of digging into, like, early panini sets, and there's a school set I found from, like, 2016 that I'm picking up cards from.
And I I like going on YouTube and seeing people rip it. Like, I'm trying to, like, just learn more about the product. And all these comments from, like, these videos from 2016 of the product being opened are like, Panini sucks.
Bring back TOPS CHROME. It was just like, people were still mad about Panini, you know, in 2016, six years after they had come in, four years, six years, whatever you wanna say, but it it just takes a while.
It's gonna take a long time for, I think, tops to even, like, build up to have that height of a release. I don't know. They may make it happen faster the way that they're able to leverage all the stars and celebrities.
But that that's what I'm saying is, like, they don't want Tom Brady Tom Brady's not gonna rip a box of prism, but whenever they release whatever their flagship football thing is, Topscrone football, like, you better believe you'll probably see him opening that.
Alright. Next question. From Drake's PC. It's easy in a bull market selling cards out of 50 or similar non rare stuff.
But how do you know when you sell the one of ones or really rare scarce stuff? It's often said if you aren't selling at current market price, then you are effectively buying them at that price.
We can call them coffin cards, but I envision selling cards sometime before I croak. I just don't know what signals that now is the right time. I look at my collection a lot, but my cards spend 99% of time in the safe.
Please discuss. Disclaimer, you aren't considering selling as part of consolidation or fundraising towards a new card, or you aren't selling to fund a non hobby purchase? Drake, this question.
This is a it's a brain buster right here. Yeah. I kinda forget what you go with it. Like, yeah. It seems that he's maybe struggling with seeing what stuff he's selling for, knowing he has rare valuable cards and contemplating it.
Should I be selling these or not? I guess I boil it down to they are just sports cards. And if you look at the card and it gets you hype and you wanna own it, keep it.
But if you look at it and you're like, I'd rather have the cash equivalent for whatever reason that's going on, sell it. Like, there's never gonna be that clear signal of, like, now.
Like, no one's gonna that's out of my pay pay grade. That's for the professional hobby portfolio analysts. You know? Like, you gotta go to one of them, get us set up a consultation.
Or maybe that's what we're doing. Maybe we need to start invoicing for this. But, yeah, I don't know. I still think it's it's never there's never gonna be a clear signal besides, like, what you personally wanna do.
If you're if the cards are, like, sitting there and you're not enjoying them the way you used to and the value's gotten out of control, sell them.
I don't know. I I think it would be silly for us to say if there are cards in your collection that don't make you feel a certain way, like the way you felt when you bought them and got them and maybe have lost some of its luster.
And you look at the market and see a similar or adjacent sale selling for three to four x or maybe even more what you bought it for. I think it would be silly not to sell it.
I think right now, it's very smart to especially cards that aren't forever card free. If you can take money off the table and you can go fund something else or, you know, take care of something else, like, it's quite alright to sell.
I think you I think we as collectors, like, fear selling sometimes because, like, we there's uncertainty and an unknown on if we're selling at the right time or if it might go for more later on.
I tend to, like, operate if it enters my mind that I might sell, then it's already gone.
That's kinda I, you know, I I here's an example. So I have I have the 2012 Prism Black Finite, T Y Hilton Rookie, PSA 10. I bought that card for a percentage of what it is valued now according to card ladder.
Now during the run up on all these $20. 12 black finites and seeing all these high prices, I have not even flinched. Like, I have not I have not said, oh, I should sell this card now.
Am I saying I'll never sell it? I'm not saying that, but, like, right now. And part of it is because, like, I really love the card. And it connects back to a broader collection I have with my Prism collection and my Black Finite lane.
And so all the hype of momentum makes me just wanna keep that card more. Now, I the same can't be said with other cards in my collection.
I have sold other cards in my collection that I have maybe thought might fall victim of consolidation, but I've seen prices that have caused me to to move them. So I don't know. It's case by case.
But my rule of thumb is if I can do well on a card and I'm already thinking about selling it because the thought of the return is greater than it in my collection, then I have no problem putting it in a box and sending it away.
Yeah. Gotta gotta do what's right for you, what's right for your collecting.
And, like, doesn't make you less of a collector if you sell something. Like, it's it happens. Some of your mannings. Yeah. I mean, I are there any that you know he has that you're angling for?
We can start disparaging that set in that card to get him to unload. Yeah. We'll we'll do some recon next week, and we'll start that, that, operation. Alright. And final question. This is from taste Tasty Card Sandwich.
With Fanatics and Topps revealing the first basketball design to be the same as baseball, to be the same as the baseball design, meaning going forward, they'll likely repeat the same design across sports.
How are you feeling about that? Personally, I was hoping each sport would have its own specific, ownable design each year, but I get why they are not doing that money.
But how do you feel about it? Okay. With the same design, or would you prefer football gets its own unique design?
Also, I know repeating designs across sports is nothing new. Panini does it with Prism. Topps has done it in the past, but these days, Topps reuses the main design across so much just in baseball, flagship, chrome, holiday, logo factor.
Probably one to three more I'm forgetting. When you multiply this across three sports, we're gonna be seeing a lot of the same design each year. That's why I think it would be cool if it were different.
Sorry. Long question explanation. I said I like consistency across sports. I do like when there's, like, that one flagship set, that one flagship, like, look and feel that becomes recognizable and marks a year.
Like, I think that is what helps a lot of these sets that we like. You think of 2012 prism and you can see the basketball version. You can see the football version. You can see hockey.
Like, there's a consistent, look to that and same with I think that's what helps PMGs and Ruby's, like, baseball, basketball, football has the same I mean, slight variations, between basketball rubies and football rubies.
And but for the most part, it's the same look.
And I do think that helps because I sometimes think to my personal favorite set, 2,002 finest football, how it is not the same in basketball and baseball, I think hurts it for its overall hobby appeal.
Like, I think if 2,002 finest basketball had x factors out of 20, if MJ, like in a plain years, Wizards had a o two x factor out of 20, like, that would be a highly desirable card, which would have led to more interest in footballs, the football set and same thing, but they're all completely different.
So and which could be cool. It's cool that there's three different, looks and feels for the three different sports, but I don't know.
I like the the cohesion. It's and especially just for, like, one flagship set. Then when you get into other sets, do whatever. But I do like when there's one, standard look kind of for a set.
I agree with with what you're saying. And I think it's like one of those rare instances where what's good for the collector is also good for the brand where I and maybe this is, like, for me as the collector, I should say.
I prefer that consistency across products, especially when I'm like me as a, someone who's creating a lot of content, it's easy for me to reference and refer.
And then also just, like, I like the consistency across sports in my own collection. I also like from a brand perspective, especially as tops and tops chrome and trying to get it off the ground again.
I think they're trying to build that brand equity, and, it's confusing if they have a 2026 Topps Chrome product that looks different to new people getting into collecting across sports.
I think it's just a lot easier to build brand value and equity when the design elements are the same.
So I think that's good for tops. And, you know, for me as a collector, that's good. So, yeah, I I don't mind it. Yeah. Alright. Thank you all for the questions within the dynamic kickoff of this episode.
Let's get into, collecting updates. What are the current collecting projects that you're focusing your resources on? Let's see. I've had a couple random pickups. Nothing too crazy.
One of them is what year was this? 2024? 2024 optic football, the gold out of 10 of Bijan Robinson. $70. I thought, why not? I love Bijan. It was a clean looking card. I hadn't picked up anything of him in a little bit.
And, yeah, just a cool optic gold. I love optic. Optic is a good set. And to be able to get a major star from that set, a gold under a $100 seems fun. Okay. So this isn't this wasn't his rookie? Not his rookie.
So it's 70 I was gonna say, I was like, $70 for a truck. Yeah. Dude, that's the best. That is the best when you can get, like, a gold off of an awesome product like Optic for under a $100, like, in the second or the third year.
I love that play. It's so much fun. Yeah. And, like, okay. Yeah. I will look out for a rookie. Maybe I don't get one, but, yeah, just having cool golds of players I like is fun.
That and what else did I pick up? Oh, yeah. Jordan Howard 2018 prism gold popped up, $25 OBO, and I I just smashed. Didn't didn't even mess with offering.
I have the Mitch Trubisky 2018. And so now to have the Jordan Howard, to have those two from the last Bears, memorable playoff season, was was a no brainer to me to pick up. That was a a you said a prism gold?
Prism gold. Yeah. 28. For how much? $25. Dude, that that is that I feel like you should have a celebration. To get a prism gold of anyone for $25 in this day and age is that's a that's a, man, that's a great win.
It felt like a like a good smash, but then I was, like, watching who was it? I think Joey Bosa. His 2018 Prism Gold ended at auction for, like, $40. And I was like, yeah.
That's yeah. $41 for Joey Bosa. 2018 Prism Gold, I saw it end, which I don't know. I'm not chargers guy, but if I was a Bosa guy, I would have been all over that card. I'm with you on that. Anything else you pick up?
I'm looking at my I did get one card. I don't wanna share yet. It's from that set. I was I'm messing around trying to find a set to go in on, and I think I found one, but I have I haven't even got it in hand yet.
So I don't even like, that's the test. I'm like, this looks cool. This this has all the fundamentals, but is it gonna give me the feels when I open up the package?
So I'm I'm waiting on that. And then if I really like it, I don't know if I wanna talk about it because I kinda wanna be on my own and just, maybe collect on that.
I always say that, but then I get bored one day, and I'm like, I wanna post and talk about these cards with with people.
So but right now, I'm just, yeah, kinda doing some recon. And, yeah, I got a few cards on the way of yeah. Just, like, random like, I want I love having a set, like, o two finest refractors that I just get for, like, $10, $15.
Like, when they pop up at the right frequency, I can just pick them up, start filling binder pages. So I'm kinda looking for something like that in the early Panini era to collect.
So I'll report back once I have more info. Will you? No. Alright. I picked up I posted this already, the 1998 Bowman Chrome Peyton Manning golden anniversary out of fifty b g s nine five.
I have been having fun going back in Demanning's early catalog rookies and giving it time and finding opportunities.
And, to me, this was an opportunity. It was a card I've always wanted, and I'll explain why. I I consider the golden anniversary refractor from '98, Bowman Chrome, out of five, to be Manning's my favorite Manning card of all time.
That card limited to five. The way the market is going, I likely will never, own a copy. So, this is the alternative. But I I think about it, and it's like, I spent a lot of money on this card.
Okay? So there's but there's there's only 50 copies, and it's the iconic Bowman Chrome image, but a variation of 50 copies. So, like, to me, it has, like, that image that I love.
And I had sold my Bowman Chrome Refractor, not too long ago. I had a PSA nine. And I had I was like, god, I wanna get that card back. And I was like, exploring, like, what it would cost me to get a 10.
And then I looked at the golden anniversary, and I was like, I'm just gonna go for the golden anniversary. So got that and really pumped to own it. The best part about it is is it was listed for a high price on eBay.
And I made an offer, waited almost twenty four hours to counter, and it was still not within the distance I wanted. So I made another offer, and we've talked about it actually on the podcast last week.
I was like, I've got this offer out on this card. Like, it's got, like, three hours left. Well, when we got done with the podcast, I got a message on eBay that it was declined.
And it was like, hey. If you wanna talk to, if you if you wanna check out or have a conversation further, like, this is what I'm trying to get out of the card. Like, here's my IG.
It was like one of those. And I was like, okay. So I Here we go. I plug in the IG. And when I plug in the IG, lo and behold, the owner of the card in the account that I was landed on is former NFL quarterback, Matt Flynn.
The Matt Flynn game. Let's go. Yes. Six touchdowns, one game. And I was just like, this is amazing.
And I will say I had I was I was I knew a little bit that Matt Flynn was involved in the hobby from another collector friend who had a run-in with him. Little did I know I would have a run-in with him, and it was great.
I reckon, like, out of the gates, I like I made, like, not I wasn't, like, didn't try to be rude or anything, but I I made, like, a comment, like, to let him know I knew who he was.
And but he was a great, great dude. We, you know, negotiated. It was easy. He had UPS come pick it up, and it hit my doorstep, really good, safely packaged, had a sign for it.
But, yeah, it was, like, really cool. He's doing media for the LSU Tigers. And so, yeah, he's got us, you know, kids who are involved in the hobby, and he's interested in it.
And he's been getting involved. But, like, to me, it was like the definition. It was like, man, this hobby is so interesting. It's like all of a sudden you're doing high dollar deals with a former NFL quarterback.
So that was that's my story for the week. That's incredible. And AJM cards 94 had asked this question. When will Matt Flynn be on the pod? So that is that's gotta be in the works.
We'll get He'll have something to say because he he talks in microphones all day. So we'll we'll work to get, Matt Flynn on the pod to talk cards. Absolutely. I think does he still have, Packers record for passing yards in a game?
That's a good question. I think that rod okay. Rodgers tied it, but four eighty. Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn. Tied it on the nose? Tied it on the nose. Four eighty. Yeah. Wow. But Matt Flynn had six touchdowns in that game.
Rodgers only had four. Wow. That what a what a ride for Matt Flynn, though. Has that game, gets the contract, goes to Seattle, but then Russell Wilson's there. Yeah. What a ride. That's awesome.
That's a cool card too. That's a classic Manning Post being out of 50. Have the ones out of five, has one of those sold recently? Or The last one, I think there's a maybe a sale in card ladder for, like, 28 k is and I don't know.
I haven't looked it up recently. I think that's around it. But Grant at Waldorf Stories owned one. I don't know if he sold it, but that's the last copy that I've seen is one in his possession.
Okay. One sold in January, a PSA nine for 28,000. Dude, that that to me, that card is every that is a card that I would consider just giving up everything to get. That's how highly I think of it is. That is my 52 mantle.
Is that card right there? It rules, man. I love that card. Yeah. Out of five too. That's it. I've got these, dude. That's the great and no one when people talk about, like, Manning's best cards, that card is never in the conversation.
To me, that is his best card, full stop. Nothing is even close. That's just one man's opinion, but that's my opinion, and I feel very strong and adamant about it.
Let's go. We'll get it for you. We'll find it. Alright. Let's make it happen. Alright. Little NFL check-in. Let's talk some team talk and some takeaways from the rest of the league.
I, my team was on a buy this last week, so I'm just waiting all day for Monday night. Just that's it. You're waiting you've got the whole you have to sit through the slate again. You know? How about that?
That that's weird when that happens. Yeah. And, honestly, after seeing the Colts just beat the shit out of the Raiders, it made me feel less confident in the Bears and less good about the Bears barely beating the Raiders.
So I have, level set, and I I've taken myself down a notch where I'm going into the Monday night game against the commanders just thinking, like, just don't embarrass yourselves.
I've seen this story many times before where I go in thinking, like, this is our time to make a statement, and they just look absolutely terrible and, like, they don't know what they're doing.
As a football team, I've seen that too many times. So I'm expecting I'm not expecting the worst, but I'm I will be yeah.
I'm going in. Just please don't be embarrassing. Look like a competent team that is competitive. I hope Caleb looks better. They've they're bringing back some healthy people, so I hope, that all helps.
But, yeah, man. After seeing how your Colts treated the Raiders, it Colts are a wagon, dude. Dude, I wish first of all, revenge game for the Bears. So you got that to look to.
You're in a a good position there. So I think that's something that's helpful. But, yeah, I wish every game I went to was 40 to six. That was fun. Just, not stressed in the stadium. And, yeah, I was thinking about this too.
It's like, saw Notre Dame destroy Boise State, Ashton Genti, then saw Ashton Genti get destroyed. So it's like it was a for for Boise State and Ashton Genti fans, it was a tough weekend, and my teams were responsible for, that downfall.
So that was that was good. But yeah, man. I have I've, you know, given enough credit to everyone. It this offense is sick.
It's just we're just moving the ball and doing what we do. And every Drew Brees said it about this offense. Every pass play looks like an extension of the run, and he compared the Colts offense. This is Drew Brees.
We all know how good is he he is, but it reminded him of his Saints offense offenses and how they operated. So, you know, I'm I'm not getting over my skis, but damn, this offense is fun. And I just wanna give credit to Quentin Nelson.
I mean, he is just just crushing everybody and leaving the biggest holes open for Jonathan Taylor to just do whatever he wants. So, yeah, I'm I'm excited. We've got the cards. So after their downfall, we're catching them.
So it's been a favorable stretch for the Colts. Final note, Shaquille Leonard got honored at halftime, retired as a Colt. So he's one of my favorite Colts of all time. So it was a fun Sunday.
We went out to ZOOBOO at the zoo afterwards. I walked from Lucas Oil to the zoo. I'll just giddy, and it's like, you could tell me to do anything right now, and it will sound great. So I was like, a bunch of yes. Sure, honey.
What do you need? I'll do it. And I'm just like, I'm kinda in that spirit this week. It's great. Yeah. Colts, I mean, and went down to the wire with the Rams who are even though they just lost, but I think are still They're good.
A very, very good team. So Colts are legit. And like I expressed, I am Colt curious. I am rooting for the Colts.
I'm in the city, but I do have to say it's one of my three takeaways. Hell, yeah, Jags. Duval, baby. I'm I love it. That that win was awesome. Liam Cone, like, I like him now. It's just that was that was a great, win.
I'm happy for Jacksonville fans. That had to be satisfying to beat the Chiefs like that. Dude, I give them so much credit. I watched the whole game, and, of course, I'm cheering for the Chiefs because I, you know, did the divisionals.
But it's we like, the Jaguars, it's interesting that they're playing incredible football, but it's in spite of their quarterback.
They're it's like he is not the reason why they're winning games. It's they're they have a great run game in a awesome defense who's getting turnovers.
And I think, like, Trevor Lawrence is, like, nineteenth in QBR, and it's just he's he he he made the play where he tripped. He got step on and ran in. But, like, it's just not like a elite quarterback level play.
But, you know, if you can win this way, it's better than losing. So, yeah, I give them a lot of credit. Who would have thought that the Colts versus the Jaguars, they get they still have two matchups together, so it'll be fun.
We and we can't win there. We we haven't been able to win there in forever, so, hopefully, we can break that this year. Yeah. Lawrence, that last play was hilarious. But Dude. He did make some big time throws, towards the end.
But, yeah, gotta see gotta see him put it together a little more. But for at least, you know, that one week, good for them. Also Yeah. I think if the season ended right now, Colts are getting a buy.
Colts are, like, number one seed, I think. Can't even, like, look at that. I'm like, I see that, like, those early projections. I'm like, that's nice. But Five weeks in is a solid sample size.
It is. It is. It it I feel a lot better than I do after, like, two or three weeks. This is a good one. And if if it continues to go this way after, you know, the Cardinals week, I'll I'll I'll I'll feel very comfortable.
But, yeah, that's it's very weird. It's weird to see. I'm, like, trying to stay away from all the power rankings and everything.
Yeah. I mean, Colts have a yeah. Just keep stacking wins. Just gotta keep winning. I my my going into the others. I'm saying Baker Mayfield MVP. Mhmm. Love me some Baker Mayfield. He has just been like the fourth quarter king.
The Buccaneers are legit. He is just such a fun player. I'm a big Baker Mayfield fan, and I'm just pumped for him. And if you're a Bucks fan, it's a good time to be a Bucks fan because that is a very, very serious team.
They are solid all the way around. So and Baker is making every throw. He's been excellent this year. Yeah. That Bucks team is awesome.
Baker so much fun. Darnold and the Seahawks are sick too though. Yep. And we talked about Darnold on this podcast, and I was just thinking about it more. I can't believe the Vikings let him go. When you And Daniel Jones.
The Vikings had Daniel Jones? They dude, they had JJ, Daniel Jones. They when the Giants cut, do they let well because Daniel Jones ended up signing with the Colts for a million dollars less than what the Vikings offered him.
So they had Donald and Jones in the building. And now number one in QBR right now is Daniel Jones. Number two is Sam Darnold, and they're starting Carson wins. That's wild.
I mean, just seeing, like, Darnold in his one full season in Minnesota, fourteen and three, 4,300 yards, 35 touchdowns, 12 interceptions. And it's like He's really good, man. Yeah. It's like, do we wanna do we wanna keep doing that?
No. Let's go let's get a rookie, like, instead of I don't know. It's just crazy, like, how the expectations are just so so high for quarterbacks. And if you're not delivering Super Bowls, you're like, you can go, which is crazy to me.
Like, team he cannot win to invest. Well, it was like the lie the Lions game and then the He had two bad games in a row. Yeah. The end of the season was rough. Yeah.
But but it was like coming off the heels of, like, there's like this. They had a big win. I can't remember who it was, but I just remember, like, the locker room KOC, everyone going nuts and, like, embracing him as, like, their guy.
And there was, like, a big celebration. And then, like, the next scene was he was a Seattle Seahawk. And it's like, man, this league just stuff just moves so quickly. Yeah. Yeah. I mean Good signing by the Seahawks, though.
I'll tell you that. They freaking went out there and they got him. He's good, man. He is he's he looks he looked good in Minnesota this last year. He is making all the throws so much confidence.
Like, his tape is great. Like, I get nerdy on this stuff, and he looks awesome. Yeah. My second point, Keenan Allen, fastest player to a thousand catches ever. Yeah. Former Chicago bear. Former Chicago bear took him a 159 games.
I I can't believe like, he beat Marvin Harrison, to that. I granted, I bet, because I feel like he's missed a good amount of games from injury. So, like, he's probably because, yeah, he's 33. So he's older as a receiver.
So it's not like he's super young, breaking that record, but impressive nonetheless. A 159 games, you put up a thousand catches. That's that's pretty sick. Yeah. He is he's a very it's it's he's a very reliable target.
He's had a really good career. Shout out, Keenan Allen. I am going to say and I know it's just one loss, and I don't wanna overreact. But my comment here is Eagles can't afford to lose their groove.
They had 38 passing attempts, Jalen hurts, which is just not the formula. And I wonder, like, is it because they're getting pressure from Smith and Brown to get them more involved?
You look at, Saquon. Saquon was averaging 96. 4 rushing yards a game last year. He's averaging 53. 4. Now I know the line isn't as good as it was last year, and I know Saquon was on the cover of Madden.
So maybe a little Madden curse, but it's just something even though they're they've only lost one game, just something feels a little off in Philly with the offense and how they're they're managing it.
That that if Jalen Hurts is throwing the ball 40 times a game, that's that's not sustainable.
So they gotta figure it out. They gotta figure out how to make everyone happy, and they surely gotta figure out how to get Saquon Barkley more involved.
Yeah. I had for my final one, Drake May and Diggs. That was fun just to see. Drake May looks good for the patriots. I've always liked Stefon Diggs. He's just a fun receiver.
And, yeah, they put together a really good game, and I don't know. There's something fun about games where a quarterback and receiver are locked in and, you know, he's looking for the receiver and the receiver still gets open.
It's just the when they're in the zone like that. So that was definitely a fun game to watch.
Jake Browning, eight picks in three games. He just got Flaccoed disaster and since he this is what happens when you lose your everything. So I'm hoping for a Flacco rejuvenation, spray the ball around.
We'll see. But, yeah, that Jake Browning, man, that was really putrid quarterback play. Yeah. It is so hard to have even a decent quarterback in the NFL, which makes it even crazier that, like, the Vikings letting go of Sand Arnold.
It's like Yes. I know we went fourteen and three and had a quarterback throw for 35 touchdowns, but what if we get a quarterback that goes 17 and o and throws 60 touchdowns? It's like, yeah.
Just be happy with it's it's coming from someone who's never watched a 4,000 yard passing season or 30 touchdown season. So I I see stats like that. I'm like, that would have been the greatest quarterback it bears history.
Why would you ever let him walk away when letting them walk away opens you to the potential of quarterback hell, of just a rotating door of young kids who can't figure out the NFL or aging veterans.
But shout out Joe Flacco. Get your money. Get your hey. If the team's willing to start you, why not? But good luck behind that offensive line.
I hope he can you can hold up. That's a a good the offensive line, that's a good point. We're running over to MarketWatch presented by our good friends at Card Ladder. Yeah. We we didn't even you ready for a little little vintage?
Let's go. A little vintage football talk. Alright. A little vintage football talk. I've got up on the screen the nineteen forty eight leaf Chuck Bederick yellow background, PSA six.
This card sold for $15,750 on eBay, making it the highest selling nineteen forty eight leaf yellow background card according to card ladder. Now that's why I wanted to talk about it.
But I want I Dougie, digging into, Chuck Badera. First of all, I got a couple photos to share here. Oh, I thank God. I was like because I Googled him, and I'm like, oh, this first thing was amazing.
Yep. He got concrete Charlie, which in the images, he's got his fist in the air looking all just like I just had a football game with a cigar and a cigarette in his mouth.
His nickname, Concrete Charlie, came because after he was wasting guys on the grid iron, he went to his day job as a concrete salesman. So hence the nickname, Concrete Charlie.
So selling selling it and then just laying people out. And the second photo I have is the hit. Now I would highly recommend anyone YouTube this, but it's Bedeiric laying out Frank he hit Frank Gifford so hard.
He knocked them out cold. And the image is him standing concrete Charlie himself over a lifeless Frank Gifford, and it's just in a 1960 game.
So this guy, ten ten time all pro, two time Super Bowl champion, he was on the team that gave Vince Lombardi's Packers its only playoff loss in forever.
So I think that's fun, and that's what cards can do. I saw this sale just I was digging in the depths of card ladder my myself.
This wasn't promoted anywhere. I was just, like, digging it. I found this. I was like, that card rules. I was like, I've heard of I've I've heard him, and I know he's, like, one of the league's greatest ever.
So I just, like, did some digging and investigating, and I'm just like, man, sports football cards rule. That's got me hyped for vintage football.
I'm I'm I'm ready. It's time to get into my vintage. Because, like, Bronco Nagurski for the Bears has similar stories, and he has some super expensive cards, but just, like, yeah, being a back when men were men.
Dude, Sid Luckman this is the Sid Luckman's index. I used to I used to own that.
Not that grade, but, I think I had a two. Yeah. Nineteen forty eight Leaf, baby. Yeah. And, again, I like that it's this design for baseball too. Yes. If you can picture the Jackie Robinson card. I like the consistency there.
That's awesome. Those those cards are super cool. I I used to at one point, I had three different Bears players. I was trying to get all the the Bears team set, but it fell victim to consolidation at some point.
But, no, that card is awesome. Dude, how cool would a, Bederick with a ballpoint bin that was inscribed concrete Charlie. Oh, wow. That card be?
Yeah. Yes. Okay. We are gonna move on to a couple sales. We've got a couple gold x fracture sales, both of Eli Manning. We've got the 2,005 sale, which sold for the PSA 9, 2,600 and or $2,760. Then you've got the, o six I lost it.
The o five, the sorry. The o six sale, which is in a PSA 10, selling for $3,800, both in the same auction. But, yeah, I mean, the PSA 10 premium. But, like, what do you think? You're seeing these sales right now.
You're seeing the the the o five and o six back to back. What what's your reaction to these prices? There were a ton of Eli cards that sold on eBay and Fanatics. I thought this was the the the 2,006, was that a 10? Yeah.
The the 2,006 is a 10 and the and the, o o five is a nine. Yeah. I mean, I love these cards. I've always been a big fan of these. I mean, those seem like big sales for for old Eli. He definitely has a collector base out there, I think.
Yeah. His it's one of his, like, prism gold sold recently really high too. He's people I mean, two time Super Bowl champ. Yeah. What can you say? Yeah. I don't know. What was your takeaway?
I same thing. It was just like there's Eli has a strong collector base, and I don't think a lot of people talk about it. And I think, obviously, New York is a huge market, and New York football football giants haven't been exciting.
And so there's if there's, you know, people cling on to the moments where there was excitement, and Eli was the guy as, kind of leading that ship.
So, obviously, we've talked enough about these gold x fractures, and we love them. So it's kinda cool to see them get the recognition here.
Mhmm. Final sale to talk about is this Demarcus Ware 2012 Black Finance selling for $8,400 at auction. And they're obviously cool card, hall of famer. Wanted to bring it up because it is not as much as the Clay Matthews.
And we were seeing, like, these prices continue, but I think we're starting to see, like, not every one of these is going to go to the moon and higher than the last sale.
What's your reaction to that? Yeah. I thought based on the that it would I didn't know if it would go higher than the Clay Matthews. The Clay Matthews seemed insane.
Mhmm. I fully admitted that the Cutler was insane. This, though, I mean, six time first team all pro or four time first team all pro, Super Bowl champ, nine time pro bowler, nine time pro bowler, hall of famer.
Yeah. He has better accolades than Clay Matthews. So it's like, why did Clay sell higher? And is it, does it come down to Packers?
Does it come down to the timing of, like, the Matthews and what other sales were going on where it was just a frenzy at that point? I don't know. But I kinda like seeing this that shows, you know, things aren't going super insane.
So maybe if a Matt Forte or someone was to pop up, I could have reason to try and get it for not, you know, 5 digits, but who knows? Maybe it's a matter of defensive players not being as collected. I don't know. I don't know.
What do you what do you think? I just think it's like, you know, I'll I don't know. Like, in comparison with the clay, like, where might some peep a cowboy, Bronco, I don't know. Clay is, like, very identifiable with Packers.
Packers have good collector base. I don't know. But, yeah, maybe we're just I just like to see some balance in some of these prices, and it's good to know that not every card is gonna continue to top the next one.
I think I this makes more sense to me, so I like seeing it. And, Anthony Fasano sold for, like, $1,100. I saw that. Yeah. I mean, he's never done really anything. But, you know, for Dolphin's team collector, I woulda snatched that up.
Plug and play Fantasy Titan when you needed him. Yeah. He was on a Fantasy Squad for sure at some point. Alright. We gotta get out of here. Last thing, the card call out. Last week, we asked to see red cards.
That was awesome. I wasn't fully knowing what to expect. Me neither. There were some great red cards. There were creative submissions. I appreciated that. So, you know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Let's see blue cards. Let's go blue. So, you know, blue teams, blue parallels, blue whatever. If your if your card has blue in it, I wanna see it. So post it. Tag the football card pod on Instagram to your story.
We will reshare it. Thank you all for listening. Thank you all for your messages about listening to the podcast. It's awesome to hear. And, yeah, we'll see you next week. Thanks, everybody.
