The Football Card Podcast #14: Injuries, Icons, and Collecting Lessons
Hello, and welcome to the Football Card Podcast. This is it. This is the fastest growing podcast in the entire world that's centered around football cards and, most importantly, football cards.
I'm your host, John, aka Pat Nicholson. And with me as always is Brett, mister stacking slabs himself. Brett, how are you doing? I have zero complaints because I love collecting football cards and buying them and doing all the things.
And then I also love watching football. And football's exceptional when your team hasn't lost yet. So I'm I'm going to keep repeating that until, the team loses.
But at this point, I'm I'm I'm way over my skis in terms of joy, and I'm very happy. Although, the Colts have a really tough test this week. LA Rams in LA, not for the faint of heart.
So we're three and o for now, and I'm I'm just gonna drink it in, man. Enjoy it. That sounds so three and o. Are you kidding me? Three and o. And I know we'll get into this more, but congratulations on getting off the snide.
I know you Chicago Bears fans were wanting something to get excited about, and I don't know if there's a win with the way Caleb played and the way the Bears won that game that could have got you any more excited than you are right now.
So you there's there's hope in Chicago right now. Yeah. That what we'll talk later about it more. But, yeah, the the difference between just a win and a win that gives you highlights to watch all week, that's that's what it's all about.
Like, if they had just gotten into a slog, you know, and won 17 to 14 and, like, the offense didn't look good, I still wouldn't feel great. But when your when your offense plays well, I don't care if it's a bad defense.
When your offense plays well, it's fun to watch, and then it's fun to watch over and over again all week. So, yeah, feeling feeling better over here, but, we got a lot to get to this episode before we get to football.
Yeah. But first, let's give a shout to the sponsors of the football card podcast. We will, dig in. They sponsor specific segments.
If you are tuning in for the first time this season, but wanna shout out Card Ladder, the official data provider of the Football Card Podcast and Stacking Slabs Network, We wouldn't be able to do these episodes without card ladder data, and also, Haystack.

So go check out Haystack, and make sure you're using Card Ladder. Yeah. I mean, we've given Card Ladder their shine. Everyone loves Card Ladder. But really thinking about it, like, I don't know what I'd do without card ladder.
And this isn't this is not scripted or anything, but card ladder is the source of most of my card hobby entertainment right up there with Instagram. Like, I'll sit there.
I heard you talking about this, I think, with Chris, but I'll be in my living room at night, like, watching TV on my computer with my collection pulled up on card ladder, just looking looking at my cards that are in a box in another room.
But Yes. The collection feature, I just it's, I don't know. I love it. And, It's even more fun when you're in a bull market and your your numbers are green right when you sign on the app.
It's nice when things are going up. Oh, yeah. I literally think my first year and a half on card ladder, it was negative every single day.
It was from 2022 to 2023 or '21 to '23. So, no. Getting a little notification that oh, nope. Today, I lost $18. 59. So never mind. I'm down on card ladder right now. But, yeah, collection feature, looking up sales.
The shop feature, I don't know if everyone knows this, but if you just type in, like, Andrew Luck in the shop, it'll pull from all the auction houses, like, what Andrew Luck cards are out there.
So that's a great source. Instead of checking each auction house individually, you can kinda just scrape the shop.
Yeah. Card ladder. Awesome. Card ladder for life. Episode 14. This is season two, episode two, but the real ones know this is episode 14. So we gotta talk fourteens. And I think there's some interesting, layers to peel back in 14.
Mainly, there hasn't been a great 14 in a long time. So I think I think we're due. I looking at hall of famers, there are names you might recognize, like Dan Fouts, Autogram, Don Hudson.
But after that, it kind of, we're in this land of no no other great hall of famers. What jumped to your mind when looking up fourteens, Brett?
Honestly, it was I will I'm not gonna steal your thunder, but it's weird because I looked at the show notes, and the the name you have in your section was the exact name that that came into mind first, and then mine was second.
But since I had that thought and you obviously had that thought, and it's kind of funny that we both did.
Maybe it's an Eris thing. But why don't you kick it off, and who's your number 14? Well, first off, I wanna do shout out Dan Fouts because Dan Fouts put up numbers.
Yeah. He did. Relative to his time, Dan Fouts was slinging it. So no shade here to Dan Fouts. Like, I've I've gone on record saying Joe Namath is trash and Archie Manning is trash, but I can't say the same for Fouts.
I mean, he was putting up 4,700 yards in 1980. Mhmm. 4,800 yards in 81, couple first team all pros, you know, and then NEA MVP.
What's NEA MVP? I don't know. But Fouts, shout out Fouts. But the 14 I wrote down, Bears legend, Andy Dalton. He I mean, I just Andy Dalton was around for, I feel like, so long from because I remember the TCU days.
That was, like, the BCS days where TCU is starting to get involved, and Andy Dalton was on some pretty good team. Yeah. His senior year, they went 13 and o.
And then at the Bengals, had a solid strong career there with, what, three Pro Bowls, some solid numbers. But, yeah, Andy Dalton is definitely one of the top fourteens that I can think of in recent memory.
So, again, kind of illustrates the point, though, that there hasn't been a great 14 because I will not say Andy Dalton is great, but we're we haven't had a great 14 in a while. Still playing too.
The red rifle. The red rifle. Yeah. I heard I heard I heard yeah. He's on these Bryce Young's backup, which which, I saw. This is an a a quick aside is somebody was talking about him on Instagram and referred to him as the red rocket.
And then somebody, like, copied that and said, that's not what you wanna be calling Andy Dalton. That's not his nickname. That refers to something else. And it just made me laugh because I have a a a child like mind at at times.
But I was hoping with Dalton, I'm rooting for Bryce Young obviously won this past week and just one of the most, the the the Falcon should be ashamed of themselves. But that win, I was like, okay.
There's more confidence around Bryce Young because what I want a fantasy book is I want a fantasy book the Bengals to continue to go down the trouble train with their quarterback situation and be forced to trade for Andy Dalton and bring Andy Dalton back into the fold at QB one in Cincinnati.
And Andy Dalton can get that ball to those guys. You know he can.
I mean, it would be like it's just like he steps out, and he's just got the Bengals jersey on. And all of a sudden, the Bengals are making some noise, and it's like pure nostalgia because Andy Dalton is leading that ship.
That's what I'm hoping from fantasy booking then. Wow. Hey. I'd take it. I'd rather see Jameis go to the Cincinnati Bengals.
I would just see Jameis playing, period. Yeah. He needs I'll take Jameis too. Give me Jameis over Jackson Dart. Oh, that that would be the the move of the century by, Dave Ball and Joe Shane.
It was like, you know what, guys? We're benching Russ, but we got something for you. And it's Jameis Winston. I would love I would have loved that to be at the move, but more on the Giants at a bit.
I can't believe we keep talking about the Giants, but I do wanna talk about the Giants. But I wanna get to my number 14, and my number 14 is Sam Darnold.
Mhmm. Yeah. And and and that four the green 14 jerseys burned into my brain from all the Sam Darnold rookie cards that were being, pumped when he was before he saw ghosts.
And then when he saw ghosts, all those cards plummeted in value. And then we had the redemption tour last year, which my quarterback, mister, you know, Danny Dimes, Indiana Jones, Dan Daniel Jones, whatever you wanna call him.
We're we're seeing what he Sam Darnold paved the way for this. And so now Sam Darnold's got you know, signed the deal.
He's playing well in Seattle too. And a quick aside is and I promise I'm not gonna make this a Daniel Jones podcast, but you'll appreciate this as a, fellow resident of Indianapolis. Rumors rumor suggests I got sources on the inside.
Apparently, Danny Dimes likes to go to, Fat Dan's at 50 Fourth in college, and he does it late. And Danny Dimes, I think, after the Tennessee win, you know, got back to Indian late night before the place closed on Sunday night.
I'd imagine, like, some some individuals that were at the bar there all day. I imagine Sunday Night Football being on, and then maybe showing highlights of the Colts at halftime.
But Danny Danny Dimes walking in as a common man picking up his, wings and brisket and, fries and taking that home. I I can't I've got some good sources, but that's I'm I'm hearing rumor and innuendo that that that's happening.
I am I live very close to Fat Dan's, and I why I brought it up. I frequently I haven't been lately, but last year, last season, I hit up a couple of games there.
So even more reason to start frequenting fat can you imagine me and Danny Dimes becoming best friends? We'll get him on the podcast. I can show I can show him some cards I'm buying at him. Yeah.
It won't be weird. Hey. Nice to meet you. Do you wanna see some football cards? You're actually on them. Thanks for winning. That's why I'm buying them. Yeah. Here. Here's a really cool rare one of one. Can you sign it with a paint pen?
Ruin it? Yeah. If it ever reaches to that point, just what the show's being canceled. Yeah. Darnold? Yeah. I like I'm rooting for Sam Darnold. Yeah. The Even though he's a USC guy, I'm not a USC guy, but whatever.
Yeah. The best was the best Jets Donald moment, though, was when he had mono, and he was him doing, like, the pointing at the screen, all serious, mono nucleos this out indefinitely, all time moment.
But, yeah, 35 touchdowns last year with the Vikings.
That yeah. We'll see if JJ pans out. But, can you just not is it is it impossible to play quarterback in New York? Is it just impot like, unless you're, like, Eli Mann, is it impossible?
It seems like it's I mean, even Eli didn't have, like, a great career outside of the Super Bowls. Like, he had some tumultuous seasons. Knicks can't win. Yankees can't win. It's it's tough in the Big Apple.
We gotta take we gotta be we gotta I I know there's plenty of fodder, but the New York market is a massive market for the Football Card podcast, so we don't wanna we don't wanna throw our New York listeners under the bus.
You you guys live in the the the the the Big Apple. It's great. It's got everything, except for quarterbacks. I've hey. I lived there for almost eight years, and I just wanted to see one team be good while I live there.
Just it's exciting when you live in a city and the teams are thriving. I was living in Chicago when the Blackhawks won in '13 and '15, and I was the biggest hockey fan you'd ever meet during those years.
It's, it was awesome. I was watching everything. Podcast? Should we spend money? I'm thinking about it. I just need the Blackhawks to be good. I'm fully an admitted fair weather fan of hockey. But, yeah, New York. I hope they win.
It's fun when they're winning. It's fun when the the Knicks are good. That Knicks Pacer series, that was great. That's good entertainment. Always is because we always win. Wow. Wow. I love it. Cutting promos on the football card pod.
Let's get to new releases. What do you think about that? Yeah. Yeah. That's good on 14. Okay. What's what's coming out? Tell me about new cards. Yeah. So shout out new releases brought to you by Haystack.
Check out that link in the show notes to, visit Haystack, but wanna thank them because it's fun to get into this and talk about some new releases. So we're gonna talk about a release that will be being broke, I guess.
Is that breaking now? Is that how you say it? But yeah. It'll be everywhere on probably every platform that breaks, and we'll see it on Instagram, and the hits will be on eBay. But Panini Black drops on October 8.
And when I learned of Panini Black, I was very familiar with Panini Black, but I was unfamiliar with the fact that this is the seventh year in a row that Panini Black has been released, which was stunning to me.
And I think we talk a lot about just, like, hidden gems of the Panini era. And I don't know. There's the having a product that has been around this long, I think, is a good start.
Hobbybox, five card, three hits, 242 checklist. What I noticed, which I don't think, Panini was doing a a good job of this in their promo, but I'm seeing on card autographs.
And to me at this point, if you're delivering on card autographs, that should be something you should hang your, hat on.
So I know there'll be a a lot of breakers using Haystack that are ripping Panini black, and definitely, go sign up for Haystack. But, yeah, Panini black. Are you have you ever had a Panini black card in your collection?
Are you familiar with Panini black? Like, what's your level of insight and knowledge? I might have one or two in, I have a Bears box. I might have an Andy Dalton. It might be a Obsidian though.
But in my quest, I have a, like, Bears jersey, quarter card of every quarterback that's started for the Bears that I've watched is a minor chase I'm under, has led me to some interesting sets because I also go for cost effective cards.
And, but Panini Black's cool. I feel like it aesthetics are there.
It's not something I'm super familiar with, but kind of what we talked about last week where I feel like there are so many sets in the Panini era that are worthy of exploring and collecting and, like, something like this.
Like, if you're interested in getting into certain players or certain, teams or sets, like, finding a set like black and going down that rabbit hole could be a lot of fun.
It's all about zagging. So for me, black panini black would be a zag, but zags are good.
So what do you think? Do you have any panini black? I don't. But I was looking at the the promo sheet, and I there it there was there was more that I liked that I that I didn't buy through my observations.
But, you know, when we talk about these new products, it leads me to some questions that are related or unrelated.
And I wanna ask you, this is what came to my mind. Who is the greatest football player of all time to wear black? Does anyone come to your mind? Oh, I mean, is that only the Raiders?
Is there someone I'm not thinking of? You got the Steelers. Okay. Yeah. You got you got versions of the Baltimore Ravens jersey. That's true. I guess the then the Colts have those midnight black jerseys at one point.
They did. They did. But I I I could hardly count them. But that's true, I guess. I guess. I mean, Lamar Jackson in a black jersey. I don't know if there's been a better football player ever than I was gonna I was gonna say Ray Lewis.
Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No disagreement from here. Ed Reed, if we wanna go that route. Ed Reed We're going heavy on the Raiders or the Ravens.
Yeah. Because alright. Raiders' best player is what? Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, Rich Gannon, MVP. Mhmm. MVP. Okay. Jerry Rice Jerry Rice on the Raiders. Jerry Rice on the Raiders.
Is Jerry Raiders Jerry Rice the the the goat, like or or do you separate the the the different like, 40 niners, Jerry Rice is the goat, and then everything else is just, like, the encore? Like, how do you how do you think about Rice?
No. I think that is part of his, like, reason for the goatness is that he was still productive in Oakland as a 40 year old man. Like, when he was 40 on the Raiders, he had 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns. Yeah. It's nuts.
That's crazy. And, yeah, it's like he had better statistical seasons, but fact, he was doing that at 40. I think, like a LeBron is like a level to the greatness where the longevity is becomes part of the argument for that person.
Also, we missed some I bet people are yelling at us for missing, Eagles black jerseys Mhmm. That they wear often and the Saints black jerseys. Mhmm. Jacksonville Jacksonville Lions. There's a lot.
I just searched NFL black jersey, and, like, everyone has a variation, but, seeing some players pop up, like Troy Polamalu is definitely another one. But I still think Ray Lewis, Ed Reed would be, like, the top of the list.
Drew Brees, if you wanna get into a Saints black jersey. I'm glad you called out those. I always hate, hearing back all the misses, and there are definitely misses.
But, good good good real time acknowledgment of Mhmm. Of who we missed. And, yeah, I think we'll we'll move on, haystack. tech. Check them out. Link in the show notes.
What do do we do we have some listeners, share some comments and questions this week? We did. Thank you all for following the Football Card Pod on Instagram. Go follow if you don't already. Tell a friend to follow the Football Card Pod.
Maybe they're, you know, not a football card collector, but they like football. They might wanna listen to this, and maybe they're a little football card curious, and, this could be the entry point.
So, yeah, Football Card Pod for all your, Football Card Podcast needs, including the callouts for questions, which we had some great ones this week.
I'm excited about this little batch. But, the first one from Vards Cards. How do NFL injuries impact your collecting?
So, yeah, do you wanna go first? You jump in. I feel like you're hungry for this one. Well, it was interesting because there's one of my most collected players, Priest Holmes, suffered a abrupt career ending injury.
So I feel like I don't know if, it his injury doesn't impact my collecting, but I collect a player that had a kinda tragic injury that ended their career.
So but I started really collecting him when that was all in the past. Like, I'm collecting him for the good seasons. But I don't know.
It's weird to think about, or now getting into collecting, like as I collect more current Bears players, I'm now experiencing for the first time, like, collecting someone who suffers an injury in real time and having their cards and how it affects it.
A recent example is Jalen Johnson, Bears cornerback. I have his 2024 Prism Black Finite, and I was really looking forward to watching him this season while holding the card. That's the whole point.
And him being hurt and out likely for the whole season is a tough pill to swallow, but at the same time, that's a piece of, like, a larger collection, and he's already done good things for the bears where it's like, I'm not like, oh, regretting that I have the card or overpaid for it.
It's more of just I'm bummed I don't get to see him on the field, but, it doesn't really impact my collecting where I'm like, oh, I gotta sell my Jaylen Johnson cards right now or anything like that.
But it is definitely a different element when you're collecting current players and see them suffer an injury. What do you think? Yeah. I I tend to I don't let injuries get in the way of, like, projects that I'm working on.
In a lot of cases, it makes the cards a little more affordable. Injuries do suck, especially on the player front current player front for what you reference.
It's like, I've got a lot of Jonathan Taylor cards. Really nice ones. And it's really nice that Jonathan Taylor is playing like the best running back in the week to AFC offensive player of the week awards in a row, which is cool.
But it's much better if Jonathan Taylor, God forbid, got hurt and was out for an extended period.
I it would not change anything in my collection. And I didn't even think about this, but, like, my most collected player is Andrew Luck, and he ended his career early because of injuries.
So I have said this, but, like, my luck collecting, I've used it more as, like, a coping mechanism, and it's made me not necessarily think about the retirement and all the injuries, but it reminds me of all the amazing moments that he has.
So in a weird turn of events for me as a collector, like, without the injuries that luck got that ended his career early, I'm not sure I'd have the collection that I love today.
And so, yeah, injuries, man. They can they can make you have the best collection that ever.
I've never thought about it like that, but that's kind of the instance for me and my luck PC build. Yeah. I was curious on the injury train, how did it has it affected your Halliburton collecting at all?
Or did, like, his injury timed with the end of basketball season just line up where it's like, I'm not even thinking about Pacers right now.
Like, more. It's it's caught I have bought more Halliburton cards. And I'll tell you this, his his prices haven't gone down, but I bought more because of how heroic Mhmm.
This this run was so heroic. And it's like he fell on his sword by playing when it could happen. And, I mean, he's he's I I I can confidently say this. After that run, Tyrese Halliburton is my favorite Indiana Pacer of all time.
No question. Nothing nothing else asked. And because of that and that'll never change, unless some miracle performer comes back on the basketball court and does what Tyrese did but better, which I don't ever anticipate.
But that is what's cool about collecting because the mainstream would say, oh, don't buy Halliburton because he's hurting.
He's not playing this year. When I'm just like, no. Like, look what this guy did for me. Like, he brought me all this joy and excitement.
And so it's it's it's made me collect more. And so I've never connected the dots in my mind on my luck in Halliburton and the injuries, but it's it's caused me to wanna pursue them even deeper, which is which is fun. Yeah.
I think same thing with me collecting Priest Holmes where the injury kinda adds to the reason I like like, Preece Holmes was on a torrid pace when he got hurt, so I get to always think the what if game. Same with, like, Derrick Rose.
Like, what if Derrick Rose never got hurt? Like Mhmm. They were, like, at the height of their powers when they got hurt. Same with Haliburton. Same luck retiring. It's the the injuries, yes, led to the him retiring.
But, yeah. Something about, like, would you rather your player have the tragic injury that abruptly stops them in their prime or just, like, fizzles out over the next The fizzling out is no good.
You can't fizzle. You can't fizzle. It stinks to remember players sucking that were so good for so long.
And I I hate people leaving because of an injury or because of it, but from a collectibility perspective, like I mean, there's a lot of players. Like, people spend a shit ton of money on Grand Hill cards.
People spend a shit ton of money on Anthony Hardaway cards because everybody wants to remember those moments of magic and the hope that they had. And it there's football it just goes on and on, but that's a whole another dynamic.
But, yeah, don't don't fizzle out because it makes makes you look like a fool. And we don't we don't wanna while you're leaving, we don't wanna spend money on cards when you're looking like a shell shell of yourself.
You know? With with Manning, it was like, he looked like a shell of himself, but his deep the defense was so good that they won the Super Bowl.
So it was like, that didn't matter. And Brady just it's like tuck everlasting. He just he could he could he could put him in today, and he'd he'd be great. But, yeah, it's they're the exception to the rule in that situation.
I wish more people just stopped before we thought less of them. Rather burn out than fade away. Yes. Alright. Thank you, Vards Cards, for the question. Next up, from Juicy Rarities. What a name.
Juicy Rarities. That's I'm a start calling my my cards my Juicy Rarities. Says in person autos should be respected more. This is a statement. In person autos should be respected more. My my, I think my question is, who says they're not?
And it feel like, one of my observations is is I'm, like, digging into autos a little bit more than I have is it feels like in person, especially on vintage, is, like, one of those categories that's, like, soaring and has a ton of attention, and a lot of people appreciate it.
So unless there's something I'm missing, I I am not seeing that. I'm seeing more appreciation for it. Yeah. I I haven't seen any disrespect.
I have seen, like, kinda I mentioned earlier, the paint pen autos. I think there are some autos that aren't my favorite, especially autos on top of, like, numbered parallels, things like that where that's not the point of an auto.
It the can have the cool card, and you can have a regular card that you make cool by getting an auto.
But putting an auto on an already cool card, like, hurts it. Doesn't make it. It's, there's some sort of formula there. But, no, I love autos. It's not something I've, like, collect right now.
But growing up, like, I was just as into memorabilia and autographs as I was, like, cards. Like, I I collected cards, but then I'd be at the collector's den or wherever, and there'd be, like, an autographed eight by 10 of some player.
And it's like, yes. This would be cool to get. Or I used to send out, autograph requests to team facilities all the time and got autographs back as a kid and waiting after Bears preseason games to get autographs from the team.
I did that, and that was awesome. And Brian Erlacher told me no to an autograph, which I never forgot.
So, you know, you get all those, memories when you're hunting autographs. So, yeah, I think in person autos are respected as they should be. I don't think they're disrespected at all. I will say this.
If you have the audacity to list a one of one of the likes of a Superfractor or Black Finite that is signed via a paint pen, and you list that for sale on a major market platform like eBay, and it's not being sold through a consignor, but it's being sold through you, I I I'm gonna start a petition.
My petition is we should block these monsters from trying to who are ruining cards for everyone to sell them.
We're gonna block them. So that that's the platform I'm gonna run on in 2020, '6 when I'm running for, some leadership position here in the industry is you're ruining cards.
Get get out of here. Yeah. I feel strongly about that. Yeah. It's like boring basic card plus auto equals cool card. Yes. Existing cool card plus auto equals bad card.
Like, you are not it does not, you know, multiply it, add the multiply effect to make this card even cooler. No. You're you're ruining it. Dude, I Yeah. The the paint pen on the black finites makes me wanna throw up.
Like, it I've seen some people doing this, and it is just, if if if a if a Colts player that I collected showed up like that, I would I would be on a rampage. I that that's the straw that break breaks the camel's back.
Yeah. Give me a ballpoint pen engraving the card. That's how it should like, I I'd respect that more. You know? Like, you see sometimes, like, a something out of 10 with the paint pen.
But if that was a ballpoint pen with it shitty auto carved in there, could you imagine, like, a black finite rookie with signed by with a ballpoint pen? It'd be terrible. Isn't that isn't that what Panini honors does?
Yes. I guess I get yes. Yeah. That that puts a little, like, one of one handwritten on the bottom. Alright. Great question. Next up, from Charm City Tim, Jerry Rice seems to be the undisputed goat wide receiver.
Is there any other position that clear? Charm City Tim, shout out. He's a football historian. He loves football. And the the I played this, like, when I read the question, I just had an immediate reaction, and then I did some digging.
And so my answer was Aaron Donald at the defensive tackle position. And when I said it, I immediately, you know, you could say, like, mean Joe Green.
But I I also like, the comp I I measured him against was John Randall, who I would consider a a very, very elite, could be argued maybe the best. But from a stats perspective, you had, I think, thirteen seasons with Randall.
He had a 137 a half sacks, a thousand tackles. He had seven Pro Bowl appearances. He was six time All Pro. Really, really good player. Aaron Donald Aaron Donald's sack efficiency is better because he only played in ten seasons.
But he had a 111 sacks. He had 24 forced fumbles. And he was eight time all pro, and three time defensive player of the year, and Super Bowl champion.
So, like, those acolyte like, the all pro plus the defensive player of the year plus the Super Bowl champion in that short time frame, like, I don't know.
Like, I I I to me, he's the blueprint for the defensive tackle position, and he will always be measured a bit against everyone else.
And I think it's so early because he just recently recently retired that we can't even recognize this yet.
But I watched the guy play. I watched his whole career, and there were very few players in my lifetime as a football fan that have amazed me more.
And I know defensive tackle isn't like the sexiest position. But for me, Aaron Donald is the goat defensive tackle, and I'll have to dig through the stats a little further.
But I'm not even sure I need to just based on what puts him over the top for me are those individual awards, and then the Super Bowl champion that championship that he had the signature moment of all signature moments to to ice it.
So he's my pick. Do you have one? This is I like thinking about GOATs for their position Mhmm. And then, like, difference, like, standings of those GOATs and, like, who's furthest away.
So receivers yeah. Jerry Rice and and I tried to find an argument for it not to be Jerry Rice just because I'm a troll and I like to see it. I was like, can I make an argument for Moss or someone else to really be number one?
And I Jerry because Jerry has a combination of the individual personal accolades. Like, he has all the first team all pros, ton 10 of them, tons of them.
He has the longevity stats, like, because players can have a bunch of great stats without having that those first team all pros. And then he also has the postseason success. So it's like all like, there's no knock in any of those.
We're like and I'd I'd say postseason success is third on that list in football as a skilled player. You're just not as like, I don't think people blame Barry Sanders for never winning a Super Bowl.
Right. But, yeah, I think Jerry's up there. I do think Moss is close, but I think Moss is further away from Jerry is than, like I don't think Barry Sanders is far and away number one.
I think there's a claim that Walter Payton is number one. Emmitt Smith is number one. You know? Like, I think it's way closer in the running back group.
Even in the quarterback group, I don't think Brady is that far ahead of Manning of like, I again, like, yes, he has the rings, but he was like, Manning has the MVPs and the, I think, more first team all pros.
I don't know. I think Jerry's probably, though, the furthest. Yes. Like, there's no one like, with quarterbacks and running backs, you can have discussion and multiple people could have multiple players that has a case for number one.
But receiver, I do think it's hard to argue against Rice. Couldn't agree.
The the the the largest separation in individual position, goatness, Jerry Rice owns that. In in Randy Moss and I mean, there you can make an argument for some other guys, but, like, in let's just say it's Randy Moss as a second.
But, like, Randy Moss was unbelievable, but Jerry Rice is still so far ahead of Randy Moss, so you can't even argue it.
Yeah. It's, Moss's, 23 touchdowns, though. It's pretty crazy, but Jerry did 22 in, like, 12 games, I think, which is that's sick. Yeah. Good question. I like that.
Like thinking about the positional goats. Next up from Hooties Wax. 2008 Topps Chrome is one of the best sets to release football and basketball. I disagree, because those sets are very different from football and basketball.
I loved o eight basket the basketball set, but 2008 top scrum football has always, left some to be desired where the golds being out of January and being kinda mustardy compared to, like, the golds in basketball being very shiny out of 50 has always felt like a miss.
Like, if football just had those golds out of 50, it would have been such a good set, but, among with some other kind of checklist discrepancies.
But what do you think? I'm glad this got brought up because I'm not sure there's ever been a product that is so beloved in one category and then not loved at all in another.
And I think everyone gravitates to the basketball o eight. You've got the chalk toss. LeBron, I think, is in that one.
And then you've got the Kobe LeBron. Yep. So there's just a lot going on from a basketball perspective. And then football, I mean, you you wanna talk about the dullest of the dull when it comes to the shine.
It's just putrid. It's, ugh, yuck. You on top of that, you've got, different like, there's a a few different Mannings in that set. You got, like, a Pro Bowl. You got a normal Yeah. There's Records. Yeah. Like season leaders.
It's confusing. And then the the most egregious decision is you've got a really solid rookie you got Flacco. You got Matt Ryan. But if you want their super fracture, anybody can have them because there's not one rookie super fracture.
There's 10. And that decision in and of itself to say super fracture and to make 10 of them, and it's still called the super fracture, is super dumb to me.
So o eight, Chrome, get out of here. Love it. Yeah. The it's like they, at the factory, they had the same amount of gold juice in the vats.
And instead of hitting 50, the guy hit one ninety nine, and so it just diluted the gold across all of them. And then, yeah, fat thumb turned the super factor into 10.
Can't be can't be doing that. What are you doing, Topps? Take some accountability for o eight football. I'm glad we had someone who wanted to talk about it so we could bring it up and air our grievances.
If you're gonna make a super fright this is a note to the Fanatics, leadership team. If you produce super we all know you're doing the very eight, like, w w Chrome.
You're putting 13 Charlotte Flair super fractures out there. That's that's bad. No good. Quit that. We just won one. Who cares about the hits? Everybody put it out there and getting all the clips.
Just one. Quit. We don't if you if you make rookie super fractures and you have more than one, we're gonna be talking about how much we hate it. So just feel passionate about that. We gotta protect collectors at some level, John.
The hey. Topps Chrome pioneered that with, I don't know. It wasn't o eight. But the year that Ladanyam Tomlinson has 32 super factors because he has, like, the I think it's o seven, actually.
But it's, yeah, it's the year after he won MVP with 31 touchdowns, and so they did a variation for each touchdown. So it'll be but the image is the exact same on all of them.
It's not like they used a different image that represents each touchdown. It's the same card just with, like, TD one, TD two in the top corner. 31 of them. So there's 31 super factors plus then the regular base super factor.
Now if you have 31 super factors, you have no super factors. That's exactly right. Yeah. If you have two quarterbacks, you don't have one. If you have more than one super factor, you got nothing. Good question.
Top's chrome. Oh, wait. Next up from cards and cardio. This is a little vintage football talk. We have entered the segment. Little vintage football talk. So relax, put on some loafers, you know, light a stogie, little vintage football.
Of a pipe. Mhmm. Pipe. Yeah. Get a robe on. Just become Hugh Hefner is what we're describing. What a lie. When you both think of iconic vintage football cards, who and what sets come to mind?
Mine was immediate. 58 tops Jim Brown. That card, it's just I think that when I think of that category, that card is what is burned into my brain. And, you dude, you wanna you wanna you wanna I'm 40 years old.
And you know what's a fun evening for me? A fun evening for me is, like, having a great day with my family. Kids are down, and I just, like, pop on TV, and it's a football life, Jim Brown.
And I can just watch Jim Brown running all over just like these plumbers trying to tackle. I'm like, sign me up for that all day. And then while I'm watching that, I can look at his 58 tops.
That's fun. Jim Brown, I think we've said it before, but he has, like, the perfect pro football reference page Yes. Where it's nine years, eight of them are first team all pros, three MVPs, just bold numbers everywhere.
Pro football reference, you're always looking for bold numbers, the league leaders, and he just covers the page, truly ahead of his time.
I put 1966 Philadelphia. It's the Gale Sayers rookie year and also Dick Butkus. I don't know if that's the first that comes to mind.
Probably Walter Payton's 76 tops. Those are just always on my mind. Iconic cards. I want like I said, one day, I'll get those, those cards. But, yeah, the '66 Philadelphia set is really cool.
And I don't know what else. 48 Leaf, I think, is up there with, like, Sid Luckman. And and that, like, is the same design across sports. So I feel like that one is kind of iconic as well.
But, yeah, that's it. Little vintage football talk. Next up from Tyler sports guy. Kabir Baja Biamala and Adewale Agunladi. Adewale Agunladi. Both underrated. That is all. Sorry. I can't read.
I know these players. Adewale, especially, Bears legend, Indiana University legend. Mhmm. Had a strong career with the Dolphins, and then the Bears traded for him. They traded Marty Booker and a third round pick Marty Booker.
Wow. For Otawali. And, yeah, low Marty Booker, when I became, like, a fan of the Bears, he was, like, number one receiver. Well, Marcus Robinson and then Booker. But, Agunier was awesome.
He, held down the Bears' defensive line for several years, once he came there. So, yeah, great player. What about, KGB? Yeah. I've, both shout out, Tyler. Both great, mentions. I hadn't thought about Adewale Agumli in a decade.
And that seeing that name just that I popped big for that. I was like, oh my god. But, with KGB, I was like, he I just remember him being, like, very good for a period, and so I did the old pro football reference page.
Did he have double digit sacks four years in a row, which is not easy to do? And so he was a he was a he was really good, for a period of time. Yep. Love love that. Just give us random players to talk about it.
And that's what the Football Card Pod is all about. Thank you all for your questions this week. Again, football card pod on Instagram. Anytime. Just DM a name, and you might hear it mentioned on the football card pod.
But let's move into collecting updates. What are the current collecting projects that you're focusing your resources on? I can start. I'll just be open and honest here. I got my ass kicked by a calm sea seller over the past week.
Psychological warfare, and they won. Because what happened is a card I've wanted for a while that has I've known existed, but I've always felt the asking price was way too high, is on eBay.
$2,300 for this card is what they were asking on eBay. But on com c, they were asking 2,000, and you can make an offer. To me, this card is, like, $1,200, and that's, like, a strong offer is what or strong valuation is what I was at.
But there I just had no way of offering that unless I made the offer on com c. But to make the offer on com c, you have to, like, buy the credits credits. Yeah. And pay tax on it to even make an offer. Oh, I didn't know that.
Okay. So I'm like, if I I have to spend all this money just to make an offer? Like because then if I take it out of COM c, I have to pay a fee for, like, withdrawing. So so I had never done it because of because of those reasons.
But, I just kept finding myself, like, I haven't bought a card since, like, the Cutler Finite really, and those auctions did well. I had some some funds. I'm like, this is the card.
I need this card. I need this card. And so, eventually, I put I caved. And on Comm c, I put in a $1,500 offer because that was their minimum offer. And, again, I thought this card is worth $1,200. Two days of silence, just nothing.
Just nothing. Ready to load up on a whole buy some empty binders. Yeah. I'm just, like, refreshing comc every hour. Like, what am I gonna do with this money if they and two days of silence, and then it gets declined.
And I'm like, what are we doing here? Like, this is a great offer. Why are you declining this? What am I like, I don't wanna take this money out. I gotta pay a fee. And so then I'm like, alright. It's like I was at a slot machine.
I'm like, let's put more money in. So I put in another 500 because I offered them $17. 50. And I'm like, please, just get this done. And I think I lasted, like, just a few hours of silence before I crumbled, and I'm like, nope.
Cancel offer. Buy it now. I was like, nope. I'm not letting you because I've had experiences in the past where I've made, like, aggressive offers and the person ups their asking price.
Yep. Yep. Yep. And so then that started going through my mind where I'm like, this is a rare card.
This is a rare set. Like, I really, really want this. This is an important piece. Like, now I'm just waiting over 250. What if he doesn't accept it and ups the asking price to 3,000?
I'm gonna be mad that I just didn't buy it for 2 k. Mhmm. So, yeah, I crumbled. I mean, a stronger, smarter, more patient collector could have waited it out and got a better deal, but, that is not me.
I crumbled, bought the card. Wow. Dude, I love that moment you came to that realization after the $17. 50 offer and being like, nope. I'm just gonna smash Ben.
I've done the exact same thing at that level of price too. And when I did it, and it's about the if if smashing Ben and you landing that card gets you excited, whatever. Like, few $100 here and there, it all works itself out.
So I'm I'm assuming we're we're just teasing the card, and we're gonna unveil when it lands. Is that what's happening? It's a basketball card. So I I didn't know if I was able to talk about it on the Football Card podcast.
But, yeah, basketball card, I'm collecting the twenty thirteen Select Gold, players from that set. I have the LeBron and several other players and, yeah, a player from that set.
I'll say that much. But, We'll tee we'll let you tease it for the the inevitable Instagram post that'll come. Yeah. Maybe. Yeah. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe I'll just keep that one locked away.
I don't know. I don't know. But, yeah, that was my my COMC experience. But I did love that instantly, like, it was in my account. Like, there wasn't a chance I've been to it, and then the person was like, oh, no.
I can't ship it out or anything. Like, I instantly obtained control of the card, which felt nice. And then, yeah, gotta ship it here, so whenever that happens. But, yeah, what about you? Any collecting updates?
I talked about this on one of my other shows this week, but shout out, Paul Colt's eight zero eight stable. He, made available his '21 and '23 to Forrest Buckner black finites. And I knew he had those, and I have always wanted those.
And, it was one of those instances where Paul said, hey. I'm I'm in the middle of something. I'm trying to work on something, and I'm, you know, trying to raise. And these I figured you might want these.
Let me make them available for you. Here's the price. And I just said, done. I was stunned that stunned in a good way that I had the opportunity for them. You've got a player that is been so important to this era.
He's a side of the building guy. Black Finite's my primary lane, and it was a gap in my back Black Friday. I had no Buckner. So to land two in one fell swoop, one being his first Colts appearance card, it was very, very special.
I love being friendly, being friends, sharing in the passion with other collectors who collect almost exactly what I collect, and there's no one who collects as close to me as what Paul does.
And it's we've we've we've made several deals. I've had doubles of stuff that I've sent his way, and it's just nice to have that, that line, directly and to get a deal done that efficiently.
So thank you, Paul. Those cards are stashed away in the PC, and I'm I'm really pumped to have them.
That's awesome. Congrats. Those are some big pickups. How many so how many Buckner finance do you have? I have two now. Yep. Two now. I had I had none before, and now I have two. Yeah. Did you have you have other Buckner cards, though.
Right? I do. I've got gold, gold vinyl. Yeah. But I Buckner's an interesting one too because, you know, he had his rookie in the forty niners gear, and then he had a follow-up, I think, in forty niners.
And then he had several years out of Prism. And then he was reintroduced in Prism in '21 in the Colts, which is the card I have.
But what's also interesting is that in '24, there's no DeForest Buckner in the '24 release, and they decided to not put Buckner in the set, but they put Taekwon Lewis in the set who's a backup defensive, and who it's just he's made a couple appearances in prison, and taekwondo actually had two sacks this last week, which is great.
But these decisions on how they decide who's in and it's like, Buckner should be a guy.
He's been one of our best players forever who should always be in prison, but he was not in '24. It's just wild. Yeah. I feel like the defensive player decisions are always kinda Questionable.
Yeah. Alright. Let's move on. NFL check-in. Team talk. Should we just jump into it real quick? Let's go. Hey. Talk you you have yet to be able to be excited talking about your team on this podcast, so the floor is yours, my friend.
Yeah. Wanna know at home. That's what I'll say. I told you I was traveling those first two weeks of games. I didn't get to just fully watch at my house the way I wanted to. This was the first game I kinda got to do that.
So my wife's birthday was the Saturday, before that NFL Sunday. And, of course, Saturday, my wife's like, hey. My parents wanna come over tomorrow for dinner and, like, on Sunday for dinner to see our daughter and happy birthday.
I'm like, the Bears are at 04:25. Like, I knew this was gonna happen. And I, like, I enjoy hanging out with my in laws. They're fun.
They love football. Like, I knew it'd be fine, but it's more of I'm just used to not wanting to watch Bears games with anyone because in my experience, Bears games make me mad. And it's like, I don't wanna just be upset around people.
So that's the reason to not want to watch, with others. So I I communicate that. I made it very clear that I may have to be in the basement by myself for some of this interaction, and everyone was aligned, and respected that.
But, Yeah. They won, so spirits were good because I needed that so bad. Like, my family needed that so bad for my everyone's well-being. Just life is better when I'm happy, and the bears win, makes me happy.
So, yeah, it was a it was a good win. Like I said, provided highlights to watch all week. It was a meaningful win, not just like when they beat the Packers last year to, like, end the season five and twelve.
It it's like this means something for potential Bears playoff hopes. We're still in playoff contention, technically. Fifteen and two is still on the table. I don't care if the Cowboys defense is maybe the worst in the league.
Doesn't matter. I'm gonna be watching that flee flicker for the rest of my life. That's one of the best throws I've ever seen. Like, that is my Anthony Richardson bomb that you had that and I looked it up. AR's was 65 yards in the air.
Caleb's was 62 yards in the air. Like, just absolute bombs. That's just a play I have not seen ever, for when watching the Bears. Like, there are blips here and there of cool passes, but Caleb was just throwing dots downfield all day.
So it was just nice to see it, feel like him and Ben Johnson were on the same page, and the team looked much better than when they got their ass kicked in week two and collapsed in week one. I mean, it it's Ben Johnson's third game.
Like, it's Caleb's still young. Like, it wasn't gonna happen instantly for it felt like progress was made, and the team is coming together. And even if it's a bad team, they beat the shit out of a bad team at home.
That's what you're supposed to do. So, yeah, it was a good Sunday. How did it make you feel, with that offensive performance on the old defensive coordinator in Dallas. Oh, that made it even better too.
He had quotes about, like, I know Caleb in the offense and, like, to just get gutted like that was awesome. And, like, I know CeeDee Lamb got hurt, but the defense played really well too. I mean, the Cowboys only had, like, 14 points.
So hey. Needed it. Needed that win. And, like, NFC offensive player of the week, and I believe your boy, JT, just got AFC offensive player of the week. So Football Car Pod, home of the offensive players of the week.
We love to see that as well. Now the true test is to for Caleb to do I'm assuming it was Caleb. I hadn't seen it yet. Was it Caleb? Yeah. And it okay. He's gonna have to do it back to back weeks because that was Jonathan Taylor.
He's done it back to back weeks. So, congratulations. It's nice to get off the snide. Quick just update for me. Obviously, I'm very excited. I continue to say good teams beat bad teams bad, and the Colts kick the Titans' ass.
I've been just so impressed by the offense. It's been a breath of fresh air. Danny Dimes or Indiana Jones, whatever you wanna call him, he has a new lease on life.
There's a mind meld with Shane Steichen. I mean, the plays he's making, the balls he's throwing, it is just so special. And I'll close this out with don't wanna make this too long, but just, wanna tell everybody.
Everyone, you know, looking at your fantasy leagues and I don't play fantasy football, but I know people are excited about it. You're all seeing Jonathan Taylor, what he's doing. You're seeing the highlights.
And I just wanna remind everyone, the players in the NFL decided this year after Jonathan Taylor had 1,400 yards and 11 touchdowns last year to not make him a part of the top 100 players in the NFL. He was not on this year's list.
I could go and name damn near every running back on that list that was put on it instead of Jonathan Taylor. But the disrespect, it's it's adding fuel to the fire, and he is off to a very, very special start.
He's been our best player ever since he put on the horseshoe. He is an unbelievable football player, and we are seeing it play out. And Jones has been the story.
People are excited. The offensive line has been great. The weapons have been great. But none of this none of this happens without Jonathan Taylor. He is something special. The Colts are looking like a wagon.
I'll I'll be honest. They're looking it's Danny Dimes is, like, the perfect fit where it's like, it's not about him. He just has to, like, make the right play, get JT the ball, but he's still making, like, awesome plays.
That like, I had that game on. That was fun to watch. Yeah. Being in like, again, being in a city when a team is is winning is fun. So I'm I'm a closeted Colts fan maybe this year.
There we I'm Colts curious. Well, we'll take it. And, it's a long season, and it's not gonna be like this the entire time. But it is right now, so I'm gonna be present in the moment and celebrate it.
It's it's been a lot of fun. Hey. You should. And I was looking up because my guy, Bijan, they got smoked by the Panthers, but he quietly had a 111 yards. Oh, did he?
Scrimmage. He's like, he's just a monster. And I was looking it up, like, JT, scrimmage yard leader at 431 and Bijan at four zero three. So I just love watching them pile up numbers week after week. That JT touchdown run that's awesome.
That's on the hall of fame tape. I I wanted just one more JT nugget for everyone who doubted him. Colts put out a graphic today. Jonathan Taylor is fifth all time in NFL career rushing yards per game at 90.
7. He's 1% one percentage point away from Eric Dickerson at four who's got 90. 8. He's gonna blow past Eric Dickerson this year. He's gonna just waste them, and he's going to be behind, Charles Davis, Barry Sanders, and Jim Brown.
So if you wanna keep doubting Jonathan Taylor, go ahead. He's just gonna continue to run for 90 plus yards a game and score a ton of touchdowns.
Yeah. He's awesome. I have him in two fantasy leagues, so I'm loving it. Yeah. Good stuff. Let's do some rapid fire NFL thoughts. And my first one is the lions are still a wagon.
I think the the Packers loss maybe thought and people there were rumblings, maybe myself included, that Ben Johnson leaving was the magic for that offense, but they quickly throttled the Bears the week after that and then kinda beat down the Ravens.
Mhmm. Offensively impressive and defensively, they kinda had Lamar in hell, so they looked really good. Jared Goff, walked so Daniel Jones can run. I mean, he was kicked to the curb, and he he's a guy who's really started this.
It's, like, just he is so fun to watch, and he doesn't get an he he got the most love he's ever gotten last year, but then, obviously, like, he was kinda kicked back down because they blew it in the playoffs to to Washington.
But Goff is the man. He is an unbelievable quarterback. He gets the ball where he needs to be.
He knows to not overextend himself. I just think he's he's one of the better quarterbacks in the league that doesn't get enough credit. I'm a big Jared Goff. And every time I watch this guy play football, he's awesome. Yeah. He's fun.
And he's, like, he's good. He's really good. He's accurate. He makes the right decision, and the Lions just have dudes everywhere. I love David Montgomery. I miss David Montgomery. He runs with authority. He's just beast in people.
Gibbs is cool. Amon Ra is awesome. Like, dudes everywhere. So Good team. And they got Hutchinson back this year, and he's a freaking monster. So the lions are just fine. Yep. They unfortunately, because NFC North is tough.
I was gonna start with Jackson Dart. You're up, pal. Like, everyone wants you. You looked really good in the preseason. New York is tough, but, you know, after Russ is stinker, I think it's time, and they gotta make the move.
So there's a lot of momentum and hype around Jackson Dart. I hope the best for Jackson Dart. I'd love to watch a young quarterback like him rip it in New York. So that is a fun storyline to follow, right decision to play him.
What is I think he's got San Diego this week. Is that or not San Diego. They don't play anymore. I I think he's got the LA chargers in his debut, which isn't gonna be an easy one. But you gotta start off, tough.
You know? Yeah. Yeah. I'm I'm excited to see that. Do you think Russ like, it's not all on the quarterback what's going on in New York, but that series of him in the red zone just throwing balls into the problem.
Yeah. I wrote Russ is going out bad. But and this kinda touches on earlier where you're saying don't fizzle out, don't fade away. Like, how long does that affect the collectability?
Because a guy like Antonio Brown had a terrible fizzle out where the Raiders experiment and then the New England shit and then Tampa and taking his shirt off and jump like, Antonio Brown was, like, more disgraced, I would say, than, like, Russ is right now in terms of, like, jumping around teams and, like, not having success that he used to have.
But I feel like no one thinks about that with AB anymore. Everyone's thinking about when he was the most dominant wide receiver in the league for a couple years, and we saw his Prism Gold sell for $5,000 the other day.
Like, it there's still a huge market for Antonio Brown, but I don't think so it's like, did it is it four years for to forget, like, the four bad stops?
You know, there's gotta be some sort of ratio of alright. So you had a good stretch with one good team for, like, ten years, and then you went to four different teams. So that means it's gonna take four years after you retire Mhmm.
To forget the four bad You should create a formula. I think, there's something there. But that's I feel like we're watching Russ right now, fizzle, which is sad to see because Russ was a was a baller there for a bit.
But, yeah. I am gonna I just wanna shout out. And I mentioned him, I think, one of the first pods. But shout out Kyle Shanahan. You wanna talk about a coach dealing with adversity and, winning ball games.
They haven't been pretty, but the forty niners are undefeated, and they've only don't have receiver, tight end, quarterback, lost their defensive end for the year.
So Kyle Shanahan rules, great coach. But my comment on this is, I think that Mac Jones should have to pay Kyle Shanahan for this spot and that because it's going to obviously catapult him to a contract somewhere else.
That's going to be bigger than anything he could have imagined in his wildest dreams. And this would only have happened if it was under the tutelage of Kyle Shanahan.
So this period that Mac Jones is having right now, winning ball games, is going to cause some GM who needs a quarterback to be like, you know what? Maybe we should back up the Brink's truck for Mac Jones.
And so for that, Jack Mac Jones should should just give up his paycheck this year and just send it to Kyle Shanahan because his return on the other side is gonna be much bigger. Yeah. No. That's that's true.
Invest in Mac Jones? Oh, baby. Let's let's see that black finite. I would I just am thinking about I had to do some research before I get to my third point, which is Daniel Jones is an MVP candidate, like, legitimately.
He's, according to Vegas, still plus 6,000. I think there might be some value on old Danny Dimes, little Danny Dimes future. That's that's kinda crazy. I guess Josh Allen's number one. Lamar's two.
Herbert, three. Jordan Love, four. What? This is a terrible list. The the Vegas doesn't have the inside insider track that, the, smoked wings from Fat Dan's is fueling the experience that they're seeing on the field right now.
So that's that's a competitive edge for all you Footballcard podcast listeners. He's got brisket and and wings coursing through his veins on Sunday.
I need to know what his Fat Dan's order is. Just bringing it out on the paper, dropping it right in front of him, letting him go to town. If any of you listeners out there in Indianapolis, you gotta hit up Fat Dan.
There's two locations. One downtown, one fifty fourth in college. I when I leave there, I'm always feeling like a child. I'm like, oh, that was the best because it's just the best. It's great.
And, also, like, the owner's a, from Chicago, so it's like a big Cubs bar. Mhmm. So, yeah, it's a great spot, man. I love that place. Daniel Jones, number one in the NFL QBR right now. That's a MVP indicator. Playing good football.
Playing good football. What's your last last take? Mine is just that Miles Garrett is the best defensive player in the NFL, and it's not even close. And you don't even need to look at his stats. It's just the impact and what he can do.
There was clips of him trying to be, blocked by the Packers. And obviously, the Browns beat the Packers, which I'm surprised you're not gloating about at this point, especially coming off of a Bears win.
But, I mean, he does he doesn't even he looks like a superhero on the field. Every time you see him, it's just like that guy looks different. And I've seen it firsthand going to games, watching him play. He's just he is unbelievable.
So I just want to shout out Miles Garrett, just great, great football player. Yeah. Yeah. That was another element that made it a perfect Sunday, was watching the Packers absolutely blow a game against the Browns.
I love the clip of I don't know if you saw it. Like, Miles Garrett easily sheds his block, and the offensive lineman screams Jordan run.
Yeah. And he's talking about it on the sideline. Yeah. I love that so much. Like, Yeah. Packers looks my take of them going 20 o and winning the Super Bowl doesn't look great.
It's almost as if that was a jinx that worked. But, yeah, I hope I hope they continue to lose. I'll be honest. Let's, let's keep that keep that up, fellas. Man. Yeah. We'll see. You know, there's every good team puts up a stinker.
It's all about what happens next week. So Yeah. We'll we'll see about that. That is true. Alright. Should we just talk about a couple sales real quick? Yeah. Let's talk about a couple sales, and we'll get out of here.
I want to, first, say shout out to card ladder for the market watch segment. This is where John and I spend our entire lives when we're not recording the Football Card Podcast in the data in Card Ladder.
So shout out to the Card Ladder team for supporting the Football Card Podcast. First card and I will put a disclaimer on this.
I own a copy of this card, but this card, I was I was like, we gotta talk about it because we love to talk about the 2,000 to 2,010 category, and I believe this sale is a big sale for that category.
It is the o two finest Peyton Manning x fracture out of 20. This card, I would imagine, was a subject in many group chats out there.
I had so many chats about this card and what people thought it was gonna go for. It was on eBay, and it closed raw at $10,107, which, John, I definitely wanna get your comments because you're an o two, finest aficionado.
But this card is the longest tenured card in my collection. So I had a vested interest, obviously, in watching it go. Rumor and innuendo suggest that after this sale went down, another copy sold for even higher than this one.
Not gonna disclose those details because I don't know if I'm, able to, and we'll let those people talk about it publicly themselves. But just a a a monster sale of a card from the 2000 to 2010 era.
Final one for me is, like, we've seen the Brady cards be categories and categories above everything else for so long. And with this Manning sale, we're starting to see, like, that next player crop up, into kind of this rarefied air.
So what were your thoughts when you saw the sale? Yeah. This is a crazy sale. I was not expecting it to go nearly this high. I mean, I get it. I feel like we've talked about this set a ton.
I'm a big fan of this set, and it's cool to see it getting that level of recognition. It also makes me a little sad of, like, damn it. There's probably some guys I might never be able to get from this set.
But, yeah, awesome card. And for it to be raw and to sell for that much is kinda wild. And then right after this, I don't know if you saw the gold that was sitting on Fanatics Weekly sold for 11,000.
I did not see that. Yeah. There's a PSA 10 and o two gold, sold for 11, and then a Randy Moss x factor, I believe PSA nine went for 7,500 that was also. So and this sale definitely triggered some other purchases, it seems.
Yeah. Awesome card. Yeah. That's all I got. Alright. We've got a Lamar Jackson 2018 Gold Prism BGS 9. 5. Got BIN smash on eBay for 35 k. My comment on this was there has been seven public sales of this card since December 2024.
Why are we hot potatoing Lamar Jackson? That's crazy. Seven. Of that exact card or of golds? No. Yeah. Of goal of golds. Not this exact copy, but, yeah, seven since December 2024. That's wild because yeah.
I don't know. What not not what I would be doing. Like, flipping it. It's like Lamar's already established as may like, I think the best quarterback in NFL right now. Like, I know Josh Allen's up there, but Can't argue against it.
He's, another player I have in a fantasy team, so I'm extra invested in Lamar this year. And he's so good. It's just like, oh, I'm getting 30 plus points a game. Easy. Like, he's just and not from rushing. Like, he's a great passer.
The Detroit game, he I mean, he got sacked a ton. It's not all on him, but, I don't know. I I like Lamar. I'm rooting for Lamar. It's crazy to see how fast these are selling. But, I mean, it's one of those cards.
It's a gold rookie of a top quarterback. I feel like those don't end up in collections until for a while. I think it they're trading hands with dealers and flippers, because they are just big ticket cards that everyone recognizes.
So, you know, for a collector to go get this card, that's a big investment, big risk even. Like, I dabble at looking at Caleb Williams' gold prices, and it's like, should I? And it's like, no. I can't. I I just can't. Like, I Stay away.
Literally can't. I it would it's not the move for me. So I I've just from my experience, I feel like the people buying and selling this card aren't Raven's collectors. It's Right. A different segment. Alright. We're gonna do one more.
I'll let you pick. You wanna do Reggie White or the Brady? Oh, let's do the Brady. Okay. So I'm curious about the his I know this card used to sell super high, and now it's o two Topps Chrome, Tom Brady, black refractor out of $5.
99. PSA nine sold for 4. Okay. So this was a nine selling for 4,000. Yes. So it's a pop 68, and this is a card. This is Brady's let's see here.
First, let's see here. Numbered refractor, I think, in Chrome. I yeah. He's not in 2001 Topps Chrome. That's right. And so this is his first, like, Topps Chrome appearance and then his first numbered Topps Chrome.
Because he's in those two finest numbered, but this is Topps Chrome. Yeah. So the there's 599 copies. And this is the nine has sold where it says pop 68 has sold, 42 times according to card ladder.
And I was looking through the data. This is the this four k sale is the highest sale in a nine since October '22. So there's been a lot of sales since then. But it was 2,000, 2,800, 3,200, and now we're at four k.
This card, it was a pandemic card that I remember following and seeing, especially in a PSA 10, what happened. And this is just a good measuring stick, and I I glad you said we should talk about this one.
It's a follow this card. There's 599 copies, and people, I think, do some crazy things, when you're not necessarily digging into a population report and grade and everything else.
But this is one I'd keep on your radar, because inevitably, another one's gonna come up, and we'll see what happens.
Yeah. And just I know it's like first Topps Chrome for Brady and it's numbered, but, like, if you collect other guys, look at this set. Like, 2002 Topps Chrome, Black Refractors are cool cards.
And if Tom Brady nine is selling for 4,000, maybe there's value there for other players. Yeah. I I mean, it's a cool card that that Great looking card. Great looking card. Blows me away. $4 for a PSA nine that there's 68 copies of.
It's the Brady market is, is doing things right now. It's The icon the the iconic nature of this card too in this jersey with the Pats logo up at the top, and you can see they're playing the Colts in the back.
It's just it's a it's it's a it's a really good looking football card, but it's there's 599 of them. So I wish it was that any cons I'm a make it out of a 100. Oh, I know. The rookies this year are out of a 100.
Yeah. Topps Chrome. We got some we got some notes for Topps Chrome this episode. Lot of ground covered as always. Yes. Shout out card ladder. Shout out Haystack. Thanks so much. Thank you our sponsors. Thank you our listeners.
It's card call out time, though. We asked to see raw cards last week. Saw some awesome cards. Loved seeing everyone's submissions. Thank you for that. This week, let's get a little creative. Let's see trios. I wanna see three cards.
So what however they relate to one another, whatever you think, same player, different cards, same player, different parallels, different players, same team, you know, whatever it may be. Three cards from the same set. Get creative.
Let's see, those trios. Take a picture. Put it on your Instagram story. Tag the football card pod in the story post. That way, I can reshare it. A lot of times, people will not do that and then ask why I haven't reposted their card.
It's because they didn't tag me, so I don't have the option to. So tag the Football Card Pod in your story post. Follow the Football Card Pod, and we'll see you next week. Thanks, everybody.
