The Football Card Podcast #12: I couldn't care less about the team strug-ga-ling
Hello, and welcome to the Football Card Podcast.
This is the fastest growing podcast in the world that is centered on football cards and, most importantly, football cards. I'm your host, John, aka Pack Nicholson, and with me as always is Brett, mister Stacking Slides himself.
Brett, how are you? I'm well. I wanna just put a note out there as we kick this off. Football's back. Hooray, football. But I I'm gonna put a disclaimer out there. It's gonna be a lot of conversation about football and football cards.
My goal here is to not overreact on anything, because we have a minuscule sample size that we're going off of. It's okay to get excited. It's okay to get disappointed.
But it's only one week. So just wanna put that out there. I'm gonna probably say some stuff about your team out there that you might not like. Maybe I'll say something about your team that you're really a lot really like.
Whatever you do, let's just not overreact. We're gonna try to keep be excited, keep it even keel. Lot going on. I just felt compelled to share that upfront. That's that's a great message.
I was thinking, you know, it's episode 12. We made it the series finale, and that's the perfect timing because football is stupid. So you know what? I thought it's might as well just pack it up because what's the point?
We got you to football season. Football sucks. Onto the next thing. I should I should let our audience know that we will, in fact, be back, next season, which is next week, which is great.
And we do have, some partners and sponsors supporting, this great show. We've done enough to build interest from some pretty cool businesses that I respect and appreciate in the hobby and excited to share that next week.
So make sure you listen in, whether our teams won or lose week two, we don't know yet, but we will be back here next Friday. So thank you, audience of, the Football Card Podcast for, showing your support.
Yeah. In all seriousness, this has been so much fun and excited to keep it going through the season where however, wherever the season takes us through all the ups and downs of being a football fan and a football card collector.
But for now, we're in episode 12, and we gotta talk twelves. A quick quick Google search, a quick just close your eyes and think of the number 12 in football.
Is 12 the best number in football? Is 12 the goat number? That's pretty good. There's a there's a lot of good twelves. So let's start t b 12, Tom Brady.
I thought it was I thought it'd be a nice bit if we just didn't mention him. That would have been kind of fun. Yeah. I mean, that that's that's the layup. But I don't wanna we don't need to spend any time on that.
But going through this list, Jim Kelly, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Star Staubach, Joe Namath, which Joe Namath kinda trash. Right? Are we in agreement there? I I think he might be one of the most overrated players ever.
However, when we maybe this is a good time for a a little little vintage. Yeah. Well, vintage. That that Namath card when when when people talk about that air of cards, everyone always brings up the Namath.
So maybe he's a better, like, football card than he is a football quarterback. If that's That's I think that's a good example of when we had the discussion of moments versus career where Joe Namath had a moment.
He guaranteed a victory, and he took some badass pictures poolside with, like, people asking for his autographs and wore a mink coat.
But, I mean, 62 63 overall record, a 173 touchdowns, 220 interceptions. Like, this is again, back in the day where you drafted a quarterback and you just had him for ten years, and you just ride or die. Like, this is my guy.
He just he had some some rough years where he was still even the year he was first team all pro, 3,100 yards, 15 touchdowns, 17 interceptions. I mean, by that metric, Caleb Williams is tracking to be a first team all pro.
So Hey. You said you said what? You said he had a moment. He did have another moment, post career on the sideline with miss Susie Colbert. Yes. He did. He was feeling good at that that clip, man.
That'll live on, forever. So great great post career sideline interview, especially with a little vodka coursing through his veins and also great football card quarterback. I don't know. I have a graded ticket from that game.
When I got back into the like, I remember thinking of funny moments to get tickets for. Like, Darren Rovell definitely sparked that. He's always buying random shit, and he's whatever you think of Darren Rovell.
But I was like, that was a hilarious moment, that my friends and I quoted forever. I wanna kiss you. What was the game? It was, Jets Patriots Monday night football two thousand three. Okay. I couldn't remember the year.
O three. Wow. Yeah. And I set a saved search for it on eBay, and it was nothing for years. Like, I forgot about it. And then one day, I remember I was at an airport, and it just looking at saved searches, it popped up.
I was like, holy shit. It's, like, $50 for this ticket. Binned it, and then I sent it to PSA with, like, a request, like, can you put in the label?
Because, you know, you can do the moments on tickets. They didn't say drunk Joe Namath, but it says, like, Joe Namath to Susie Colbert, I wanna kiss you. And that was like, oh, hell yeah. I'm pumped.
But now I'm like, I'm not even a Jets fan. Why do I have this? But it's a funny it's a funny moment. That's amazing. So, yeah, Namath. Okay. Maybe didn't put up the numbers, but he he moved the needle for football in general.
Right? We can we can say that. He was a cultural icon. I think you have a number 12 that is near and dear to your heart. Yeah. I mean, Andrew Luck, come on. He's he's my number 12. He wore that number really well.
And my little game here in Indianapolis is when I spot a Colts jersey in the wild, I always, you know, you know, many years, many jerseys, I always try to name the player, from afar. And it's actually like driving, picking up my kids.
And there was a guy who may or may not have been homeless, may or may not. I don't know. I I I was driving, but I was trying to, like, observe this individual. But he was wearing a cold jersey, and I was like, I couldn't see anything.
I was like, oh, dude. This guy's gotta get up so I can see what number he's wearing. And then I dude, I see the 12, and then he get, like, turns slightly as I'm passing, and I just see luck on the back.
And I'm like, that's incredible. Like, the Andrew Luck jersey still lives on here in Indianapolis. So, yeah, luck is my my 12. That's for damn sure. Are people still wearing luck jerseys at games?
Do you see and Manning. Do you see Manning jerseys at games still? Oh, yeah. Manning jerseys, luck jerseys, a little bit, not so much. I will say, oddly enough, I saw recently a Carson Wentz jersey.
And I was like, who the hell is wearing a Carson Wentz jersey? And then I saw that they were being sold for on the shop, you could buy a Carson Wentz Colts jersey for, like, $22.
39. There we go. There's always a buyer for for jerseys. Always. Yeah. That's it for twelves. Unless you wanna talk about Aaron Rodgers, but he's a bad guy, so I don't care about it.
Not a bad not a bad start, though. I'll say I'll say that. Yeah. Oh, and Bob Griese, Ken Stabler. Yeah. There's some legends that are number 12. That's that's definitely up there for, good numbers.
And then I had to myself because I was like, I know there are some scrubs who wore 12 for the Bears and was scrolling through a list and some quarterback names like Matt Barkley, Josh McCown, Caleb Haney, Jonathan Quinn, Chris Chandler, and that's up up until 02/2003.
Like, all those guys have already been in the last twenty years. Eric Kramer, another 12. But, yeah, just a nice reminder that the Bears are consistent at not having a great quarterback.
So that's what I learned from this number 12. And this is not at all influenced by any other recent current events that may still be lingering in my mind and heart and body, but we got a show for you.
We got a great show for you. I'm ready for it, man. So to kick it off, questions from the loyal listeners of the Football Card Podcast. And we'll cover some football. We'll cover some football cards.
But to get into it, Eric Dibeen Card says, the week one curse for Indy is finally over. Brett, how do you feel after week one? Remember, not overreacting. I will say this. It's been it was since 2013 that we had won on in week one.
We have tied once since then. The week one win was twenty thirteen against Trail prior at home. So that'll date you back a little bit. I'll say this. I've been pretty steady about the team and my thoughts about the team, very deep.
One of the deeper teams I've seen in a while, obviously, question at the most important position, which is the quarterback. In my mind, I I thought we were going to win the game.
I I, like, felt confident going into that. I had no clue that the Colts would win at that level. It's just been so long. And even if you say the Dolphins are a mess, which they are, and they're a bad team, which they are.
If you're a good team, you should beat the shit out of really bad teams. And the Colts have not been able to do that for a very, very long time.
So from a fan perspective, going to the game and just, scoring on seven drives, which is has happened, having one of the most efficient offenses, most takeaways on the I mean, it's just literally everything you could want.
Rookie, tight end, Tyler Warren looking like an absolute beast.
You know, Daniel Jones, which everyone took him out out back old Yeller style, just waiting to put the bullet in the back of his head, getting saved and coming to Indianapolis, and playing like he did week one in Shane Steichen's system.
Well, there's a lot of Jalen Hurts, Steichen magic wizardry going on there. As excited as I could be after a week one, now I'm we I'm trying not to get over my skis because things change quickly.
And what I'm excited about this week could turn around next week. Certainly, Colts have a tough one against, the Broncos, although Bo Nix looked terrible. Broncos coming into Indy. So it's nice to get the back to back home wins.
But, yeah, I I feel very good. It's been a while, and I've been consuming all the content, all the podcasts, all the articles this week, and I'm hopeful. Yeah. I mean, when the team dominates, that's the best.
Like, that that was just a dominant win. I feel like the Colts and I could be wrong, but I feel like you like, they have a lot of close games where you can play a bad team and they play down.
Or if but they also can play a good team and always I feel like the Colts always play up where they are always competitive.
They're never, like, getting blown out. I could be wrong, but that's just a general feeling. So yeah. It like you said, the Dolphins are a mess, but it's not like the Colts got into a dumpster battle with them or anything.
They just straight up beat the shit out of them the way they should. So that's gotta feel good to start a season with a win like that. I'll tell you this, final note from me.
If they didn't do this, you have the Jim Ursay Ring of Honor honoring Jim Ursay the owner. It was all about Jim, and it was awesome. Like, great tributes. You've got the entire Ring of Honor, inducted, squad there.
Manning, you got Adrian James, you know, hitting the anvil. You've got Marvin Harrison, Dwight. I mean, it just goes on and on. It's like, if if you don't win that game, your season is going to suck.
So I like, walking into that, I knew the implications, and, there was never a doubt. So I'm glad they rose to the occasion, and it just did we'll see what happens this next week, but, off to a good start.
And the roof was open. Yes. Open. It was. Love that. Alright. Next question from Black Hat Cards. What happened on Monday night football? I fell asleep. Just gonna just gonna get into it.
So I guess this is a quote that always sticks to me. You know the song Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi? Do I know that song? Come on. Yeah. It's all when wet, man. Yeah. It's all the same. Only the names will change.
For for whatever reason, the the Bears' ability to put a consistent product out there, no matter who the coach is, who the quarterback is, who else is on the roster, for it to always feel so, so similar is just kinda impressive, kinda in awe in this, franchise's ability to continue to roll out the same product.
And I went back and I looked at a quote from this is what I wrote down verbatim in episode nine of this podcast, right after the Bears had won a preseason game 38, and I was riding high, but I wrote this quote down.
Watching the Bears has always been a combination of watching a defense or special teams make unreal plays to keep the team in the game and then hoping the offense can finally do something, and then watching an offense that doesn't know what they're doing.
That's I wrote that down four weeks ago. And if you watch the Monday night game, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
That was brutal. Not the way you wanna start the season. Again, you just gotta not overreact. Yeah. It's, my condolences. I I will say, you know, the the defense especially after that pick six, it was like, damn.
Like, this that opening drive, was nice, but it's just there's inconsistency a little bit, at the, quarterback position, and it's, you know, it's growing pains. But you never know, man.
You could be on the other side of it. We could this roles could be reversed. But, again, we can't overreact. We just gotta it is one game. I know. It's, like, going into Detroit, getting a win, like, totally different, outlook.
But I guess it was just so disappointing in the sense of, like, the excuses that are coming out of that game of, like, couldn't get the run game going, penalties.
It's like, I know the excuse archive for the bears. Like, I've I've been in that. I know all the folders. I can open it up. I can get into it.
I have defended my guys for years when I shouldn't. But right now, I'm just like, I'm tired, boss. Like, I don't I don't even, have it in me to try and, like, see the good in this one quite yet. That that could change in a couple days.
It's still early. But, yeah, I mean, Caleb doesn't didn't look good. Defense was sick. They're down a couple starters, a couple big starters. Defense looked great until they just couldn't do it anymore. Yeah. I don't know.
I I just one takeaway I have is that I wish I had lived it up a little more in the off season. Like, I just should have known. That's my time. I should have been popping more bottles and celebrating, because this was inevitable.
But dude, I'll say this. So, like, I watched every second of the game. And I the one, like, the JJ McCarthy of it all, I texted my friends and I just said, I I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback play this bad in my life.
Like, his performance, which won't be talked about because of the way it ended. Right? You know, the way, you know, he made it happen, which is, at the end of the day, really all that matters.
But the build up to get to that point where he won the game for him, it was just absolute putrid. So I'm left to where you've see there was, like, doctor Jekyll and mister Hyde on both sides.
It was like, I I don't know who to believe or who's good and who's not after that just because it was so topsy-turvy on both sides. Yeah. I just even when it looks good with Caleb, it always feels like it's chaotic.
It's like he makes some incredible play that no one else can make because he escaped the sack and, like, got out of the pocket and threw a missile, but then he, like, hasn't been able to make the plays that a lot of other quarterbacks can't make.
Like, it never feels calm.
Like, a nice little drop back. Never feels like a Danny Dimes. Never feel like I'm like, give me Kirk Cousins. Give me just like a I don't know. I'm not I'm not giving up yet, but it's just like it feels so similar.
And for it to feel so similar so many times is just another weird like, am I in some sort of sicko universe where, just, like, trapped on a hamster wheel in some office of a madman who's just like, look at this idiot.
He's just believing it again and again. What what we we I know you probably wanna move off this, and we can move off this as quick as possible.
But you you saying that there was a moment or moments in that game as a spectator where, that that sporadic inconsistency missing targets, dude, it, like I, like, closed my eyes and I was like, oh, this this is like what Anthony Richardson was doing.
That, like, it really it like, you'd see the amazing play, and then you'd see, like, just easy balls just, like, soaring overheads or throwing feet.
And I was like, god. Like, that reminds me so much of what I was watching with Richardson.
So I just had to to make matters worse, I had to drop that comment in. No. It's it is what it is too at this point. I'm like, yep. I've seen 18 games. It's not like giving up, but I'm not, like, defending.
I'm not Yeah. I don't have the time or effort right now to be like, well, let me I'm not watching the tape, and I'm not gonna find the, like, 12 throws that are amazing that, like, no one else can do.
It's like, nope. I can't I can't do it. I'm just gonna focus on bears of the past who were also this bad, but it's been I'm far enough removed that it's fun to collect their cards and think about them.
So, yeah, we'll we'll see. Could all change in a week, but, yeah, not a great way to start a season on a national stage. Next question. This is from, how would I say this? This is, like, Latin.
Which is, like, collecting is creating in Latin, but that's their name. Pretty, creative Instagram name. And I I probably butchered that, but the language is dead anyway, so you can't tell me if it was right or wrong.
Which other which teams, other than the Bears and Colts, are you most excited about this season? Through line through line is gonna continue. I'll just say the Bills because I was all Bills last episode.
And after the week one game, I have no reason to get off that. So if the Bills are on, I'm watching, because I'm watching Josh Allen. That game was so sick. And yeah. Same. Bills. I'll I'll I'll put the Ravens and Bengals up there too.
I just I wanna see someone new come out of the AFC, so I'm interested in watching what happens there. Next question from Philadelphia Special Cards. Ethics of buying up one of ones of a player you don't collect to later resell.
I don't think it's, like, I don't think there's any, like it's the hobby and I don't really unless you're, like it would be unethical if you're maybe, like, there are fraudulent things going on or about it.
But it sucks. But, yeah, it's it's part of it. Especially in markets like this, it's only gonna happen more and more.
And probably in segments that you really, really like. So it's wherever the attention is, there's always gonna be someone who's gonna try to make margins off of things. So yeah.
It's I I'm so used to it at this point that it's like, if I miss out some on a card I want to like, one of these types of personas, I, like, usually just, like, hope that a couple rounds in the flipper vortex later, it'll fall out the bottom and I'll get access to it.
But I have this, like, once it reaches that point, I just, like, I put the I start the clock and I'm, like, don't go running to that now because that's not a conversation I wanna be a part of. Yeah. Agreed.
I mean, I don't like it, but, like, what can you do? It's, like, part of this. Like, this was going on it got me thinking of just, like, social media in general. Like, if social media didn't exist, you wouldn't know this is happening.
Or you would assume it's happening. You, I guess, would know it's happening, but you wouldn't be able to identify like, oh, this is a person that's buying these one on ones.
So that's kinda part of it that, I don't know, just stands out to me. And as far as it's if it's ethical or not, it's like, who's the then you get in this argument of, like, who deserves a card more, which is all arbitrary.
And you can't like, if it was at auction and this person paid the most for it and they wanna resell it, like, they're entitled to that.
It can't be like, oh, so and so deserved it more because they had this, this, and this in their collection already, which, yes, of course, I would you want everyone to get the cards they want, but it doesn't work that way, especially with these one of a kind cards.
So I'll throw this out there real quick.
What's worse? What's worse? The flipper who's buying the card before you and reselling it for two x, or the entitled collector who thinks that card is theirs and they how dare the flipper come in? Like, what? We've seen both of these.
I've seen it. They're they're both of these sides are really present right now. Which which one is more annoying to you? Yeah. That's a good call. Because, honestly, the the one on one flipper, it's like, they're showing me cool cards.
I but I and I don't know. It's, like, hard to say, like, especially if it's a if someone opened up eBay and saw something cheap and bought it before me, it's like, fuck.
I missed it, but I don't know. It's hard to, yeah, it's hard to feel entitled to any sports card.
And, again, if it's if you are on that side, I think you just wait it out, and that card will become available eventually because the the one of one flipper doesn't care about the card as much as you.
So I think maybe use that to your advantage, and it'll end up with you eventually.
But Small piece of feed small piece of feedback too. It's I'm not trying to, like, say that we all need to be happy and super positive all the time. That's not what this comment is.
But I'll say this, like, if you wake up every day and you post something negative about what's happening on Instagram or in the hobby, and that's, like, your brand is just, like, bitching, like, take a step back.
Like like like, get rid of the people who are making you unhappy. You don't need to follow them.
It's like especially in this market where, like, prices are high and commentary is high, it's like, there are individuals that are just every day. And it's like, you like, I don't need then I'm on my my decisions.
You're getting muted because I don't I like I'm so tired of listening to you complain or watching you. And I think at times, we, like, forget that, yeah, this is like cards.
Like, we're supposed to enjoy this. And, again, like, I'm not trying to, like, preach or whatever, but I don't know. My mindset is never, like, if I hate something that much, I'm just, like, I cut it off.
I'm like, I can't do this. So, it's one of the observations I've made, especially in the last several months with this market. There's just a lot of unhappy people out there.
Yes. Mute, unfollow, just like curate like, I like to think in in life, you know, people tend to live in bubbles where they start curating their news feeds and all that based on, like, their beliefs and their opinions.
And so then they live in this bubble and then are shocked when Trump wins in 2016. Because they're like, how's this at? Like, I was living in New York when that happened, and everyone was like, how, like, how does this happen?
I was like, okay. I also am from Indiana in a semi flex country. Like, like, everyone's kinda just stuck in their own curated bubble.
And in real life, it's nice to follow other sources and check-in on other things to see other opinions and other perspectives in real life. But in this hobby, you don't have to do that. Like, you can do this.
Remove anything you don't like, follow the people you do like, look at the cards you like, and not deal with the bullshit because, yeah, right now, especially in this, like, bull market, there's so many people who are just and you've talked about it with Chris and Josh on, card letter confidential who are, like, jockeying for position of, like, I am the smartest card person alive and, like, look at the cards I'm buying and what I'm doing, and you should be doing this too.
And it's like, come on. Like, just they're cards. These are sports cards. Like, get a life. I don't know. Get a life and collect.
Yeah. Get it, get a life and start a podcast about football cards. Would you? All right. Ran over. Next up, we've got from Midwest Vintage Cards. No questions. Just love the pod. That I love. Love that positivity.
Thank you. Josh is the man. I will I wanna give a plug to nineties auctions. He's a great dude, great collector. He's running an awesome business. Go check out nineties auctions. I actually went through in their August auction.
They had a '97 Marvin, Harrison rubies that sold, which is a banger of a card. So, got a chance to, talk with Josh at the national a little bit. He, you know, makes some appearances on the hobby content circuit, knows a lot.
He's been in this for quite some time. So thanks, brother. Alright. And final question. This is from Drake's PC. Drake says, on this week's card letter confidential, shout out, CLC, the subject of collector identity was discussed.
In a group chat last week, I reflected on my collector identity over the past four and a half years as being only a Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, WWE, and Arkansas Razorback player collector.
Over the next four and a half years, I don't see my identity changing.
For each of you, has your identity changed over the last four and a half years? And why, looking ahead the next four and a half years, do you see it staying the same as it is today?
You wanna you wanna take a first crack at at that Yeah. With Drake's very thoughtful questions. And, Drake, thank you. We just needed to call you out to get you to, drop these, atomic bombs on us.
No. These are thoughtful questions. I love the four and a half years, specificity here where what am I thinking of my not my five year plan. No. That's that's too far. Four and a half.
So I said, I think I've stuck to my main identity over the years. And then I was thinking, you know, what makes a collector identity? And I called these pillars where it's like bears, early two thousands football, and running backs.
So let's say those are my pillars. But those are extremely broad categories, which within each of those pillars, there's, like, you know, infinite amount of and I call them lanes.
So under bears, I have, like, prism is a lane. Or early two thousands, under bears is also, like, a lane. Or under running backs, it's like Priest Holmes and now like Bijon Robinson.
Like, you know, under each of these pillars, there's different lanes. And then I do think that each of those lanes could eventually grow into being a pillar of your identity.
And once you have new pillars, your identity could change. So just for example, like, in Drake's, collection where he says his pillars are two of his pillars are WWE and Arkansas players.
Like, those are so vast. That's so broad. You could there's so many ways that you could collect within those pillars.
And just, like, what does who's to say that if some Arkansas player has a great career and goes pro in the next couple years and becomes like a goat, and Drake starts to have a desire to collect them, and it could start small.
And then eventually, he's really likes collecting this player.
And four and a half years from now, it's like, wow. This Manning card I've had for ten years, like, I really like, but I've had it for ten years, and I have passion for this new lane.
Let me sell it and get that. Like, I I could just see, like, where, yes, his identity would stay the same. He's still collecting Arkansas, but, like, it shifted where that's more of his identity.
So that's that's my little spiel on, identities, pillars, lanes, all all these these rambling thoughts of a madman. But what'd you what'd you think about this?
You know, I think, generally, my collector identity, when I got out of, like, buying stuff that I didn't like to try to make money off of it when I first got in the hobby, was has always been focused around the city, and the city I my sports teams are in.
That's my North Star. And I I don't I don't think that'll ever change. But I also, like, really value openness, and and I like change.
And, my interest shifts slightly. I try to be as adaptable as possible, and like, have a taste of something if it interests me. And sometimes that leads to me selling it, or me building it out.
So I I'll say this, like, I never thought, like, I would be getting into WNBA cards when I first started, but I am now, because it's an an interest of mine, and I'm having a lot of fun doing it. So, yeah.
I don't think, like, overall, generally, my collector identity will change, because I I feel like it's pretty cemented at this point. But I think within inside of that, like, I'm open to, buying something and seeing if I like it.
And sometimes, like, that experience, opens the door to not only new cards, new categories, but new people. And I think it's really refreshing to engage with new people who collect certain things that I'm learning about.
Like, that's really fun. Like, even in football cards, like, if one day I decided to say, you know what? Like, I am really I got all this I got I got somehow $50,000 dropped on my table, and it's like, okay.
You can spend this $50,000. Maybe I would take, like, 20 k of it and say, you know what? I've always wanted to really collect nineties football cards.
Like, let me engage in that community, and let me learn some things. And, like, that process I've always found to be very, very refreshing. Yes. I always think of it like I mean, collecting is an art in a way.
It's like we're trying to curate some sort of story, I think, or some sort of piece for that hypothetical time when someone, like, walks into my office and is like, do you do you know anything about collecting running backs?
And I can be like, well, let me show you what I've crafted over the past five years.
So, like and those types of collections come from different ideas, and I feel like I'm always seeing things that lead to new ideas for new things to collect.
And as a sports fan and a fan of cards, like, where I have fandoms that stretch beyond just football, like, basketball is something I'm just just scratching the surface on.
And I don't who's to say in five years, I'm not like, alright. I feel like I'm good with my Bears collection.
It's not, like, done, but I'm also, like, more interested in some sort of basketball art form that I want to curate where it's like, oh, I think it would be awesome to get, you know, these rare cards of these this group of players because if I put all of them together, it will be this expression that I'm trying to create.
So yeah. And I think over the years, new ideas could pop up that lead to new ways of collecting where right now, it seems like we're all pretty locked into our things, but I don't know.
People change and we like, it's like once you finish a collection, I know you can't really necessarily ever truly finish one in cards, but I don't know. It's like once you get to the mountain top, it's like, what's next?
Gotta find something else to do. I love it. Good question, Drake. Yep. Okay. Speaking of collecting collecting updates, what are some current collecting projects that you're focusing your resources on?
I have one pickup that I wanted to highlight. This was a 2005 Topps Chrome throwback throwback refractor, Priest Holmes, Jersey number 31 out of a 100. This popped up on eBay. It was like they had, like, a $150 OBO, which was crazy.
Like, if you look up other comps of players from this set, I over I overpaid for this pretty soon as card. But I liked it, and I was watching it. And over the last few weeks, like, I kept coming back to this card.
I was like, that's sick. I sent offers, and I kept getting auto declined. And I was sending, like, $50, $60 offer, auto declined. And, like, those are offers are so over what this card is worth.
This is starting to piss me off. But then they sent me an offer, which gave me the ability to counter. And foolishly, since my other offers of 50 and 60 got auto declined, I just started at 70, and he accepted, like, immediately.
I was like, damn it. I could've restarted that negotiation and came in at the reasonable price that he probably didn't even see because it was getting auto declined.
And now here I am paying up. But it's jersey numbered. It's one of one, baby. So, you know, you can't tell me it's not worth this.
I've I've never I've never seen these before. And I look at a lot of cards. I'd never knew this existed. So they did I need to research it more, but all different players have, like, all different years.
Okay. This is I don't know what year this is. But this is like a throwback design of some, like, eighties Topps card because I can see the Walter Payton version of it, I believe, in my head.
But, like, Brady's looks different. Like, Manning has one. Ed Reed I had an Ed Reed at one point. So they're all numbered out of a 100.
They're all refractors in this, like, throwback style. So it is a cool cool lane to go down. But, yeah, that's that's my pickup. Can you imagine if, like, there like, in the original set, there was a Walter Payton refractor version.
Can you imagine? And they didn't, like, tell anyone, and they were just, like, opening up the packs and, like, in all those dull cards and then, like, you've got, like, the it's like the introduction of the refractor technology.
Like, you people would be losing their minds seeing that in that era. Right? Oh, yeah. Refractors still blow my mind. I love looking at a refractor. Like, how they and that they're they're not consistent.
That's another beauty of collecting. Just like how prism gold is not equal. Like, I'm so curious about the variables of refractor refractor juice or however they however they make this.
Like and even then thinking about cards greening and how there's no reason for that. Like, we there's no scientific explanation for greening as far as anyone can find, which is kind of fascinating.
Yeah. It's like they they these scientists working on the formula couldn't figure it out, eventually figured it out, then they try and mass produce it, and it loses its luster. Fascinating stuff.
I wanna believe that the shiniest cards that capture our hearts and minds are produced in the best economic time. So, like, when the economy is up, the shine is the brightest, and when the economy is down, the shine is the dullest.
That's there's a chart there. Some like, there's gotta be a way to measure refractor shine. Like, if you'd lined up every prism gold release there and, like, angled them the right way.
You know? Someone do a science project for this. If if someone has kids at the age where they have to do a science fair project and but, like, but you're the one that's gonna do it, please do it on this.
And, find what the shiniest ones are and then correlate that with the global economy. We we we have a spot for you on this show. We'll give you an entire segment.
You can run through the entire experiment and share your findings, and we're happy to host you for that. Yes. What about you, Brett? Are you picking up? Yeah. Yeah. I do. So I I'm I'm a I'm a psychopath.
I I I did it. And this is so I naturally I asked Thursday night football was going on. I had prevented myself from looking at Daniel Jones cards and started looking and perusing and said, what if I would?
And I found the 2019 select Daniel Jones field level gold. Now this this card itself, not the Jones, but this the I think it's 17 through 19 field level golds with the checkerboard.
Mhmm. You know, x fracture patterns. The I've I've I'm a I'm a lover of these cards. I think they all look good. And something about, like, this year really reminds me of, like, getting back into the hobby.
I like Kyler Murray, same rookie class. But so, like, this card was on eBay. I think it was, like, maybe the the it was OBO. Maybe, like, $800 OBO.
And I remember, I, like, hit the star, and then I, like, I I'm, like, trying to be good. And I was, like, you know what? Like, if you feel the same way, like, make an offer the next morning. So I woke up and I made an offer.
And, like, the counters were just so marginal, and it reached the point where this was, like, going on until Saturday. And we had gone back and forth several times, and I was just, like, the the offer the counter that he sent expired.
And I, it was $5. 75 was the the counter, and I was like, I just can't do it. And then then what happened? I went to the game and riding high, feeling great.
And I was like, you know what? I was not expecting that, but Daniel freaking Jones just, like, was behind the scenes of one of my favorite victories that I have seen in person in a long time.
I want that damn card. So I I was like, this guy's gonna really put it to me. I'm gonna go back at the offer, which this is back to, like, the back end of eBay.
I'm like, can they connect the dots that, like, I am the same person who he, like, went through all this with? Does does that help me? Does that hurt me? Because I was the only one in the Daniel Jones business. There was no competition.
So I went back, and I got home, like, right after I put my kids to bed, sat there, put on football, and I just threw out the the offer. I was $5. 75. This is what you countered to me, and it got accepted right away.
So I was like, perfect. Then I'm like, this is probably the worst mistake, but it's not like it's not thousands of dollars. It's there's it's the but it's, like, got the qualities. The card is great.
Looks good. It's a BGS9 5. I did see that the sale of this brought out the p a PSA 10. There's a PSA 10 on eBay. So yeah, whatever happens happens, but, like, I felt like after the how I felt and this is part about collecting cards.
Sometimes it's about gut and feel, and and I felt really good and saw a lot of promise and wanted a card. And so I bought a card.
That's hey. That's fun. You know? This is supposed to be fun. Like, that's how I felt with Bijan Robinson, like, the only active player I collect that's not a bear. And I'm like, hey. He had over a 100 yards and a touchdown.
That makes me happy. Like Yeah. Let let me have a little thing here that, you know, just makes me happy. Is it the smartest purchase? I don't know. But we're having fun. I'll also plug, Nick at the War Sports Cards.
He he he's been doing some, like, behind the scenes ripping. Like, I'm kinda jealous, and he ripped the box of twenty fifteen prism, and he pulled the Andre Johnson gold prism, which I needed.
And he he just slid into my DM's. And I love this. And he was like, hey, do you need this? And I was like, you don't you don't know how bad I need this pal.
And he's like, I'm I'm not trying to make a ton of money. And I was just, like, gave him a number and he said deal. And it was, like, the next day or two days later, it was on my doorstep.
And that's just the best. That that happened with my Jack Doyle with Beau Roethlisberger Collector and Nick. So if if you're out there ripping and you're pulling Colts prism golds, come my way, baby.
Wow. Do we need to rip something on the football game podcast? I think so. We might have to rip a box. We should get Yeah. Some sort of Prism box or something, and that'd be fun. Do a little IG live or something.
Alright. NFL check-in. Let's run through this quick. We did a lot of football talk, but we talked about our teams. But what were three big takeaways around the rest of the league that you had from week one?
Let's do let's do rat like, you do one, I'll do one, and we'll just do them real quick. Okay. You kick us off. Number one, I put the Packers look incredible, and that makes me very sad. Yeah. Packers looked awesome.
They look like a juggernaut that is a surefire team to win the Super Bowl. So I don't know. It just just a reminder that some teams are better than others. But then I was really thinking about it, and I'm like, wait a minute.
I'm acting like the Packers win Super Bowls all the time, and they've only won, like, two Super Bowls in the past sixty years, which is, like, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did that.
So they're just kinda in that tier. So that made me feel better when I put it in that perspective.
My one of mine was Jim Harbaugh rules. And I think watching that game against the Chiefs Friday night, which dude, I get don't know how you like, you probably were ready for a break after Monday night.
Tuesday night, I was like, dude, I don't have any football to watch. I'm so pissed off right now.
But, like, that Friday night Friday night game getting locked in watching that, expecting just, like, the chargers to pound it and all this stuff. Like, Harbaugh is like, no, man. I am letting my quarterback rip it.
And I have never been I think Justin Herbert has a ton of talent, but also, like, there's some parts that I've just never really I thought he's been a little little overhyped a little bit, but dude, he looked phenomenal.
So Jim Harbaugh, I think, orchestrated that game plan where I think they were expecting him to run, and they were just like, nope. We're just gonna we're gonna let, Herbert Cook, and Herbert looked awesome.
So Jim Harbaugh rules. That's my first one. Herbert? Like, I just had to look because I knew his finite was over a million dollars. Yes. It sold for $1,100,000. Yes. But I didn't realize his NT Shield RPA one of one sold for $1,800,000.
Dude, he his market is the most overblown without ever doing, like, player to never do anything. But then he's also good too. Right. It's just like this weird he's like a whole case study of of of of itself.
Well, and the timing of it. Like, his rookie year like, 2020 draft class, his rookie year was great. I mean, he broke, like, every rookie record. Yes. It's like, passing yards and touchdowns and then yeah.
And then his second year, again, like, even he threw 5,000 yards in his second year. I didn't realize that necessarily. That's crazy. Yeah. But that's a that could be a whole case study, like you said. Just time time and place.
What else did I put down? I put down Derrick Henry is awesome, but that sucked. That the fumble sucked for him. I felt bad. But he's just so good. And when you just every year, I feel like it's like, oh, well, now he's old.
He's not gonna do it, and then he just runs over everybody. He's just so big and fast and can't be tackled. And the Ravens are awesome. I'm excited to keep watching them. Yeah. Yeah. Tough loss for the Ravens.
They're really good. That was an unfortunate fumble. He was playing great. My my second, observation takeaway is Bangles. Just an absolutely putrid win. They are perennial slow starters like the Colts and they won.
But dude, they had eleven first downs to the Browns 22. They had a 141 total yards and 95 passing yards, like and they got crushed on time of possession. And they won the game 17 to 16, I think the score was.
But, dude, it just putrid. Like, I know you win. You don't put a coach on a hot seat, but Jesus, come on. Like, you get, like and I know that Brown's defense is, like, respectable, but good lord.
Like, a 141 total yards? Come on. Yeah. That like, I have Joe Burrow in two fantasy leagues because I'm riding high on Burrow, my MVP pick, and he let me down week one.
Yeah. That was pathetic out there. Yeah. Come on, Bengals. Figure it out. My next I didn't finish this slot. I just put Chiefs question mark.
I guess I'm question mark. I'm interested to watch, like, how they kinda how their season goes with the roster they have, and I'm I'm sure they will figure out ways to win games and be in contention when it's all said and done.
But is this the downfall? Is Patrick Mahomes, a system quarterback, finally getting exposed?
I think I think, I'll put it on record here. Just somehow, someway, Tyreek Hill is gonna end up in Kansas City once again. They they they need him so bad, and he needs them.
I just can't wait to see how it's orchestrated. That's my prediction. That I like that. I bet there's rumblings of that. I mean, the Dolphins seem like they're ready to blow it up. So that Danny Dimes killed the Dolphins.
Well, this is, this is my third and final, and then we'll get into Market Watch. It's just the Giants. And I know we have some Giants listeners, and I'll just say this. Last year, you let Saquon Barkley walk in week one.
He had two touchdowns, a 100 and, I think, nine yards. Obviously, ended up with the accolades winning the Super Bowl. And then this Giants had the season they they did, which Danny Dimes obviously was a part of that.
They got rid of him. And then Danny Dimes you get rid of him, and Danny Dimes has the week one he does in Indianapolis. And the Giants just did not look like not not a good showing against the Commanders.
And I'm like, how how much how much more of this do we have to see before you get a clean slate? Because it's now it's like it's like on this track, if like, I'm like I'm like lighting a candle, and I'm like, okay.
If we if we can somehow get that Saquon magic going on that Philadelphia got and just putting it in Indianapolis and, like, thank the Giants, maybe we can have a deep run.
But, man, it just I mean, Jackson Dart are like, week one, Day Ball is already saying, like, Russell Wilson's our guy.
It's it's it's not it's not good right now. And it's only week one. I'm not trying to overreact, but it's just not good.
No. It's just bad organization, and I feel for him. Like, even watching Justin Fields with the Jets, I was like, he looks good. Hey. He did. He did. It's something about playing for these franchises that there's something in the water.
In Boulder Field, there's something about the shitty sod, like, something that and, like, the bears are just on this carousel of rookie quarterback for three years.
They don't figure it out. They let them go. And not I don't wanna go the Joe Namath route of give someone ten years to figure it out, but I don't know.
Whatever's happening is not working for both franchises, Giants, Bears, Jets too. Like, yeah. For to be a Jets fan and watch Rodgers come in and throw four TDs on you and beat you, like, that's gotta suck.
It's it's misery. It's just true misery being stuck in NFL mediocrity. I I've I I have been there, and I'm hoping I can get my head above water. But, again, we'll we'll see. We're we're only in week one.
We'll see. Yeah. It's it's early. Just one win. Just give me a win. Turn turn the ship around. It feels good, man. It feels I know. I could. I'm not You can write in the NFL, dude. You can write it for a week.
Like, you could write this whole week, dude. I've been in cult shit every day, walking around the street, just smiling. It feels great. But, like, you enjoy it, and you get a week to enjoy it, and then tables can turn.
But, like, that week after a win is fantastic. Yeah. It's it changes who I am as a person. Like and, so I had I had to fly to New York for work, and I had to fly Sunday night.
So I missed I missed the afternoon games, but I gotta watch the end of the Bills game. But then Monday night so I was and I used to live in New York, and there's a Bears bar that I knew about that's near my office.
And I was like, I'm gonna go to this Bears bar and watch this awesome game. And my good friend, Brooklyn Barry Bright, met me, and we sat at the bar. And, I was high five, embarrassed people when I was walking in.
Like, people were pumped. It was so fun. That first drive happens. It's a touchdown. I was like, this is amazing. And, then we both left at halftime because I wanted to get home to watch it in peace and watch it unravel.
I I feel like I knew it was gonna unravel, and it was time for me to go. But now I'm also like, shit. Should I have stayed if I would have stayed? Did did anything? But, yeah, I just wanna shout out, Brooklyn Berrybright.
That was a fun hang fun to hang out with, other card people IRL. You just you never get to talk cards like that. And so that was fun. Awesome. There's always a there's always a silver lining.
Yep. Alright. Market watch? Market watch time. I'm gonna do a victory lap here because, mister Pack and I were talking about this card, and it's the twenty twelve prism Clay Matthews finite prism one of one.
This bad boy went to auction and sold for $18,000. Yes. $18,000. And I think Ryan Webber cards I saw as the owner he posted about it.
But we were going back and forth on this this week, and I'm wrong most of the time. But I just threw out a, 18 k with buyer's premium when it was, like, at nine, and it landed on that.
And so right after the auction ended, I texted John and said, with, like, a bingo emoji. And I'm glad you said, yes. You did say this. But, anyways, not trying to pat myself on the back.
Maybe I am trying to pat myself on the back. But what I do wanna say is, goodness gracious. Like, Cutler, Matthews, Beloved, and their respective fan bases, what happens when we see one of these hall of fame guys hit the scene?
What are we gonna be doing? Like, this is getting crazy. Yeah. This yeah. Props to you because I asked. I was like, where do what do you think? And you said 18 k, buyer's premium, which is I don't know.
What'd you know? Well, you know, Brett. But, that that was a a big sale. I mean, I'm glad that these are coming out. I don't know if that hit auction just because of the cutler, but did you see the a Kirk Cousins rookie finite sold?
I think that was for 15 k. So there was a brief moment in time that Jay was the highest selling 2,012 Short way now. Prism, and then he's quickly been topped by Kirk and Clay.
But, yeah, this makes me want to see one of those big hall of famers even more. And I think this, like, kind of, like, adds that mystique to the set where when you see, like, a sale like this, and you're like, holy shit.
18,000 for, Clay Matthews. Like, what did the Brady sell for? It's like, oh, it's never been seen. What did the Manning sell for? Oh, it's never been seen. What about Spinitron has Manning.
Oh, Spinitron has Manning? Okay. Never mind. But but it won't be for sale unless you know? But I guess, like, conjures up conversations about wondering where these other huge names are and and what they would bring in auction.
And and then, yeah, I guess you find out that they're locked away in a spin he's got I know he has Breeze and Vic.
So he's got Manning, Brees, and Vick. That's that's insane. Spino, if you need Jay Cutler, hit me up. Kidding. That that would be the best. The four horsemen. Everyone knows those are the four horsemen of NFL.
Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Jay Cutler. We also saw, yeah, the Joe Flacco, Pac has that. I think he got it from Spino. Yes. I've heard rumblings of that. Yeah. So okay. The next one, twenty twelve prism.
It is the this card, it just rules so much. This is the Troy Polamalu, twenty twelve gold prism PSA 10 pop one. This thing was at auction selling for $8,100. And, I mean, this is about as cool as it gets for me.
I think Troy Polamalu rules. This is a pop one. I think there's 1952. But, yeah, if you're sitting on a any of these, Troy Palomalas, man, might be a good time to to try to sell them because I don't know.
This this thing, when I saw it, I knew it was going to be outrageous because there's a Steelers have a strong collector base, and I'm sure many Steelers collectors were just salivating for one of these to hit the market.
And so this was the ultimate, like, I'm just gonna heart this because I can't wait to see how what it end ends with and, obviously, very strong sale.
That's an unreal sale. That to me is crazier than Clay Matthews 18 k. I mean, I know Clay Matthews isn't a hall of famer and not the level of defender Paulo Mahler was, but 8,100 for a prism gold is wild.
I'm and yeah. I don't know. This blew me up. Like, what would his finite go for? A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. That card if that card hit, dude, that card that card would go a lot of money.
Because, dude, I'm I'm Troy Polamalu killed me as a Colts fan, but I respect the shit out of him and was like there's like he's a guy that I look at, and I'm like, man, I'd love to have one Troy Polamalu for my collection.
And I'm sure there's a lot of people that feel that way. Mhmm. But no. Seeing this, it's like, what would an Ed Reed an Ed Reed Black Finite?
I don't I don't think Chris has that. But yeah, there are some awesome cards out there from this set that I hope I hope these sales bring out more, because it's just it's fun to watch.
Death taxes, big sales bringing out other big cards. Yep. Last card here is the 97 Skybox Rubies, Jerry Rice BGS85. This thing went for best offer on eBay for 12,500.
We have talked about this card in terms of just, like, the although the scan is not good, this card is amazing and it's beautiful, and I think one of the coolest images, on a football card.
So anyways, like, I saw that $12. 05 and I was like, That's like a steal. Right? Dude, I I don't like there was a sale in '22 for 11 k.
This is $12. 05. But, yeah, it seems PSA seven sold in August sold two weeks ago for $45,000. Yeah, dude. So, yeah, steal of the century then. Yeah. This is Did someone just, like, put it up there and but it sold for best offer.
Someone would have smashed Ben on. I think sometimes card ladder shows the best offer when it's been a bin. Oh, if it's listed at best offer and someone bids it.
Offer. Yeah. Got it. Because, yeah, I've noticed some. Yeah. But that that's definitely a low yeah. That's $45,000 for a PSA seven on FedEx Premier, August 29. So if that went through, congratulations to the buyer. You just got a steal.
If it let's let's say it went through, it's just a reminder that in this crazy market, it's chaotic. And in chaos, there is opportunity, and always be watching. Like, I'm I'd feels like it was every month and year passes.
I'm more habitual about my checking of my saved searches. And I just that that's just my feedback is, like, this could be a card you really want that you could get for a steal.
This makes no sense of why this would have gone for this low. And if you're in the nineties football scene, you probably know exactly or have details, like, report back.
But, yeah, it seems absolutely wild. But I wanna think that this is just a that this is an opportunity for someone and someone capitalized. Yeah. For sure. Alright. Card callouts. Last week, we asked to see players you're excited about.
