Hobby Jobs: Why the Sports Card Industry Needs Career Infrastructure
what's going on everybody welcome back to your weekly special your weekly rendition of cool cards the cards that i spotted across instagram no these weren't the cards that were posted in stories talking about record selling prices or somebody taking their card and putting it next to the other card and jockeying for position no no no these are cards that i spotted that were just posted that have some context that caught my attention that served as my pattern interrupt for the week i've often said when the market is ripping the cards come out people are posting them i think it's a really good side effect of this insane sports card market we are currently experiencing i learned so much from these posts these cards why collectors sacrifice for these cards why it matters i think context is everything i am happy to be back in the saddle i am happy to be producing content for the stacking slabs patreon it has been a doozy of a weekend three kids man no sleep no rest for the weary weary is that weary we i don't know i can hardly talk i'm running on fumes i've got caffeine coursing through my veins it hasn't quite caught up yet but that is okay i'm ready to go are you ready to go i'm ready to enter the universe of cool cards are you ready to enter the universe of cool cards let's get it going i'm fired up we've got ten awesome cards we're gonna start here with the twenty fifteen national treasures material signatures nfl shield of the one the only the great jerry rice from darius darz cards thirty five k d for making a leaderboard on cool cards that have been featured by one collector darius might not be number one but he's up there he is certainly up there he's competing he's got in fact he has such a cool collection in my opinion that it seems like each and every week i have to decide which cards which card i select from the cards that he posted an amazing collection and i really loved his post about being a bay area kid growing up and how this card and acquiring this card served as a bit of a milestone and i thought that was phenomenal because i think about his cards in his collection and he's just got so many bangers but to have that sentimental connection with the card is special and he calls out the fact that there's only like three or four jerry rice game worn shields in existence this is one of them and i think that's special you know when we post our cards it is there's a lot that goes into that and we all have our different meanings and reasons but when i when i saw the card stop me in my tracks when i read the post i was like this this rules you know we see rice in this image and he is i wouldn't say maybe he's stray he's straining a little bit you can just see the determination like he's trying to go for the end zone and you've got that shield patch next to it game worm of course and just i don't know that's cool and a big bold blue autograph just an incredible card from national treasures we move over to twenty fourteen twenty fifteen prism black tim duncan in a bgs nine point five the big fundamental you know i have not shied away from talking about tim duncan and my admiration for tim duncan i think i in the football card podcast ironically i talked about tim duncan being my selection if i you know wasn't picking a jordan who i'd go with i just i think he's one of the if you're picking a starting five he's my power forward one of the greatest to ever do it he's a winner and he's captured here on my favorite year of prism twenty fourteen and i just think that's so cool you've got the black on black it's just special man you know tim duncan is one of those players that if i thought about well maybe i'll just pick up a pick up a pc of someone tim duncan would certainly be someone that i would consider i like winners i like leaders i like people who do it with grace and tim duncan has always checked all of those boxes for me it's so cool that we get to see cards like this just on instagram people posting them out of their collection but this is one certainly when it i saw it it stopped me in my tracks and i guess i should shout out base collector nineteen ninety two sorry if i butchered that incredible card we move over to another one oh my goodness joe low pop poppy twenty thirteen twenty fourteen prism gold lebron james ten copies the shiniest year of prism to date the red on red jersey this is prime time heel lebron where he was ripping people's heads off the the best version of lebron in my opinion and i think it's fun you get those cards right at the beginning of the prism run obviously we've seen the twenty twelve do record breaking sales obviously the twenty thirteen is just it's just an incredible card the design the aesthetics time and place i know joe certainly in reading his post had some sacrifice that went into this called out nick at the world sports cards for helping with the funding and consolidation process you know this is a great thing it is so great that when an opportunity like this card pops up we have services like funding to help us acquire these cards and us do the work at the back end there's so much that goes into that but such an amazing card it's beautiful and it is in an awesome collection so congratulations to you joe we move over to chris cdice cards we've got a little bit of a white framed kick going on here but these two cards maybe this was sunday i was sipping my coffee maybe before the kids got up and i saw this post you got the o six which is a gorgeous year you've got the white framed jamal lewis one of one refractor paired with the steve mcnair refractor one of one to to have two of these of your player or of guys on your team together i don't know if i've ever seen that you know and this year you've got the wide frame refractors x fractures and the super fractures so i always think about this with those six finest it is a product that contained three one of one parallels before the proliferation of one of ones in products so i find that interesting a signal for what's to come but how about these aesthetically you've got the white frame and then the selection here lewis and mcnair tops decided to put them in white jerseys so there's just i don't know they stand out to me because you just don't see cards that look like this they look certainly unique and they stand out it's that white that white framed pattern interrupt and these things are really cool cards we move over to matt mcdoyle's sports fabric of the game babe ruth legendary materials i looked at this card and i just thought about like this last stretch and it doesn't impact me that much as a collector because i'm not much of a you know patch swatch shield logo man i'm that's not really my lane but i can appreciate the history and we for so long we have gone with out game worn materials although at the end of the panini run you're starting to see more of them pop up in products like silhouette but we we went this whole stretch with player worn and unworn and it's like what are we doing and you go back here with this with leaf and and certified and not only were they putting in game worn materials but they were putting in babe ruth game worn materials and it even says it on the side here authentic game worn jersey i just like to me that is incredible it is incredible that you can take a piece of babe ruth's jersey and put it in a card in this era and it just shows you where the bar is like this to me is the bar like but no one's talking about this stuff which is incredible we get so caught up in the discover or what's already available in the flawless and the national treasures and all these things it's like what about these sets from the past where you can get a babe ruth game worn patch so i love collectors like matt who bring these and elevate these sets into the public eye into the conversation i think this is really important you have collectors driving the education through post we move over to deep south hobbyist my man with he calls out his first drew brees one of one and what a beautiful card the two thousand seven platinum hollow foil drew brees just absolute stunner i love the rainbow shine of this i love these these early playoff sets i think they're just so cool and they've got so many hidden gems breeze obviously early in his career as a a saint just a card i've never seen before a card i've never seen any other player one of one in these cards and that's what i like about it certainly captured beautifully great shine p larry ninety i mean this just isn't fair two thousand eleven i think is my favorite year of top scrum super fractures in football and to have the matthew stafford paired with the calvin johnson super fractures is just like next level of operating so like where else can you see these two cards together like this outside of them being in a collect a collector's collection and them posting them publicly so he posted the on slide one i think he just got the eleven matthew stafford and i was gonna post that and i was like scrolling through it and then i saw this pairing i was like that's the damnedest pairing i've seen and i mean how not fair like the calvin johnson is a bgs ten like that's just ridiculous so this was a great connection you know they might not have been prolific in terms of wins but they were prolific in terms of like touchdown passes and touchdown receptions just so cool we move over to north shore cards i just you gotta just spotlight it you got the twenty thirteen brady finite and then the twenty thirteen brady gold together just insanity so we highlighted the lebron twenty thirteen here's the brady thirteen and then the super or excuse me the finite on top of it just the twenty thirteen finite's again like so much shine you can see the rainbow bow glow of this i mean that brady card is i think you know you're you're talking like i don't know you're talking like the best cards of the prism era and you've gotta consider a card like this and that mix so just this speaks to me so much because this is how i love to collect especially in prism it's just you get these parallels that you love and you put them together and you take a photo and in this instance we're seeing the top of the mountain with tom brady some good pairings this week and we can't not have this conversation without showing some bam out of bio cards and eighty three points i got an opportunity to share my perspective in an article on front office sports about the collector surge after bam's performance and say what you want like eighty three points is eighty three points it's just insanity so i tended not to listen to all the back and forth discourse and i was just like let's celebrate this dude that's unbelievable so we got cardboard we love which i love him posting this card because i followed him for so long and such a big miami heat collector and fan you got the twenty twenty prism choice nebula one of one just so gorgeous and then we're gonna follow this card up with the final card from jimmy kentucky basketball cards obviously he's a kentucky legend or kentucky collector and we've got the twenty seventeen twenty eighteen donneros optic rated rookie signature gold final one of one on card autograph this is what's fun about eighty three points it's like oh no one's talking about bam on a bio let me just post one of his best cards and just look at that card i mean i love optic optic's so good and man this is one of bam's best cards so definitely an inspiring week on cool cards i've got some energy i'm feeling more fired up maybe the coffee has finally kicked in i don't know there's a ton coming from stacking slabs this week really appreciate you being a part of it tell a damn friend you know the drill we'll talk to you soon
